Nautitech 44 Open review: space and performance?

Yachting World

  • July 26, 2022

Offering space and a comfortable interior while keeping a cat light enough to perform is a tough brief. Does the Nautitech 44 Open deliver, asks François Tregouet?

Product Overview

Price as reviewed:.

It’s been more than six years since the Nautitech yard in Rochefort launched an entirely new design, but this Nautitech 44 Open marks the company’s return to the forefront of the multihull scene.

It shares the Open layout of Nautitech’s past models, but embodies the brand’s new strategy to address owner-operators rather than the charter market. We were able to judge the concept during an early sea trial on the Bay of Biscay.

The Nautitech 44 Open was developed in just 14 months during the middle of the pandemic and owes a great deal to the dozen owners and dealers consulted to define their ‘ideal’ catamaran. The feedback from this working party convinced the yard to focus on cruising owners and to go for a more performance-oriented design than the market average.

Marc Lombard’s design team has succeeded in expressing this externally by using fine bows, a narrow waterline and controlled volumes. The line of hull windows is more tapered than in the past, and the nacelle is less pronounced and voluminous than typical production cruising cats.

Nautitech’s Open concept, which was initiated nearly 10 years ago on the Nautitech 40 Open, allows the length to be contained by merging the interior and exterior into a single volume. So the true saloon is located outside, protected by a long, rigid bimini and coachroof windows that extend beyond the sliding bay window. Not splitting the saloon/cockpit function saves space – and weight, which is crucial on a multihull, especially at this size.

Transformative

The chart table and L-shaped bench seat on the port side, and the galley to starboard, are thus able to benefit from the entire interior space. Facing forward, the chart table is a proper indoor navstation, while the bench seat can be transformed into a watch-keeper’s berth. Strategically positioned between control screens and cockpit winches, it will be ideal for night passages.

The galley benefits from a large 144lt fridge and optional 75lt freezer, anticipating the demands of owners wishing to sail with complete self-sufficiency wherever possible. Designer Christophe Chedal-Anglay, known for his work on the Gunboat 68, has incorporated a clever bar unit in the centre of this living space, which works very well to distribute guests, and naturally becomes a focal point for discussions.

Aft helms remain key elements of the Open concept. Photo: MULTImedia

In the three-cabin version we sailed, reflecting the emphasis on owner-sailors rather than the charter market, the port hull is dedicated to the owner’s cabin with aft double berth, separate heads and large washbasin and shower room forward.

On the starboard side double cabins forward and aft are separated by heads and washroom spaces – the yard preferring to offer more volume to a heads and shower/washbasin area on one side instead of duplicating identical bathrooms.

A ‘SmartRoom’ concept allows for a forward cabin to be fitted out to suit a choice of uses: office, dressing room, technical room, workshop or stowage.

On deck, Nautitech remains faithful to its double aft helm stations which are protected from the sun by two small biminis. They remain exposed to the apparent wind and spray, but the view of the sails is excellent and the view forward is better than you might think. The blind spots forward are very small – apart from when the removable cockpit enclosures are in place, which will likely only be in port or at anchor – and a step to the side immediately remedies this.

When manoeuvring in marinas, a camera mounted under the radar antenna and pointing towards the bows, gives the helmsman an accurate and useful picture of the distances available.

Nautitech continues to improve the comfort, design and ergonomics around the aft helm set up. The winches are within easy reach, and well separated from the lounging area, and the moulded dash binnacle elegantly accommodates all the necessary elements (engine controls, plotter, repeaters, etc.).

Access to the deck to go forward, to take care of the anchor or lower the gennaker, is a formality thanks to the two teak steps and the handrails integrated into the coachroof and around the deck.

Handy performance

The sporty first impression that the fine bow sections give is confirmed once at sea, where they are also noticeably dry. Nautitech has managed to keep the Open 44 to the designed light displacement of 10.9 tonnes. However, the standard configuration with a self-tacking jib giving 110m² sail area proved to be a minimum in the 10 to 12 knots of cold wind we encountered.

catamaran nautitech 42

Narrower hulls than many of today’s cruising cats, but still plenty of comfort. Photo: MULTImedia

I’d have liked to have tried the overlapping genoa, which increases the sail area to 133m². Once the Code 0 was unfurled, however, the boat came to life. We reached 8.4 knots at 55° to the apparent wind in only 12.8 knots of breeze. Of course, if you bear away a little, the pace becomes even faster, and we regularly exceeded 10 knots at 110° to the wind.

The extensive design resources used for the first time, with three digital models tested in virtual reality, have clearly had an effect. The helm is direct and offers just the right amount of feedback to steer accurately but without too much effort. The new hexagonal shape of the Goïot steering wheels quickly overcame our conservatism, as their shape allows an easy understanding of their degree of rotation. Switching from one side to the other without rushing to get the best angle of vision on the telltales is straightforward, as the boat is so stable.

There was no slamming when going through waves thanks to good speed under sail and a comfortable bridgedeck clearance. And when returning to port, powered by the two optional 50hp engines (30hp as standard), the Nautitech made 7 knots at 2,000rpm. French tradition dictated that we would be home in time for lunch!

The non-slip surface lacks a bit of texture to offer good grip in wet weather, but this is one of the only minor niggles we found with this well-founded Nautitech. The ‘Open’ concept involves a smaller coachroof but, conversely, a very large exterior saloon. And in this context we can say that the 44 Open keeps its promise to improve the comfort-performance compromise, a factor cherished by the brand. The abolition of the inside-outside boundary serves to limit displacement and help deliver attractive performance. That lack of boundary is underlined by the continuity of the lighting between the two areas, while inside, the quality of the finish has improved and the layout is intelligent. With its smart positioning between industrial yards which are very influenced by the charter market, and specialists with more radical (and expensive) choices, Nautitech has created a ‘sweet spot’ with this new model, which will appeal to many multihull enthusiasts.

What is a Nautitech Catamarans ?

By definition, a catamaran is a boat with two hulls positioned next to each other. It is classified in the category of multihull boats with the trimaran.

Generally a pleasure boat, the catamaran is ideal for long distance travel due to its thinner hulls which allow for greater speed, greater water resistance, more stability and a larger deck area.

Catas

Since 1994, Nautitech, a historic French shipyard, has been designing execptional catamarans for sailing enthusiasts, ocean lovers and adventure seekers. Catamarans designed to put sailing back at the heart of the sea experience while preserving the balance between comfort-performance.

Why choose a Nautitech Catamarans ?

Combining onboard comfort and sailing performance, Nautitech catamarans and their Open range have been designed for solo sailors, friends, couples and families, for those who are passionate about the sea sailing. For ocean lovers in search of adventure, but also for those who want to go on vacation, cruise or even go around the world.

Catamarans have many advantages and are generally preferred to other types of boats and monohulls for:

  • Their comfort of navigation, thanks to their heel which makes the inclination on board almost null,
  • Their stability which allows a fluid and safe navigation: the movement pitches but does not roll, it avoids to the maximum the sea sickness on board.
  • Their space on board: thanks to its two hulls, the living space on board is doubled compared to monohulls.
  • Their comfort on board: thanks to their large openings, catamarans are better ventilated, brighter and offer magnificent 360 degree views on board.
  • Their control: thanks to its shallow draft, the catamaran makes it possible to get closer to the coast or to pass through places where it is impossible to pass with a monohull.
  • Their speed is greater than that of a monohull boat.
  • The independence on board that they allow: the possibility of having a real personal space on board.
  • Their safety: designed to be unsinkable, catamarans have watertight holes that guarantee buoyancy in case of capsizing.
  • Their low energy consumption: due to the favoring of sailing when the conditions allow it.

Nautitech catamarans and their Open range are built around a strong concept combining quality, performance and comfort.

The Open concept, a fundamental element of Nautitech's ADN, is based on a spacious living space where the salon and cockpit are one. The layout is designed around an original bar concept that places sharing and circulation on board at the heart of the experience. The ideal sailing boat to learn about life on a boat and share such an adventure while discovering the joys of sailing on a sailing catamaran of great technical quality.

Open

You will be able to create a daily life together while respecting the personal space and the intimacy of each one, on board a boat conceived with large spaces thought for the life in community with a rigorous technique and a safety on board without fault. Wake up in a cabin bathed in sunlight and meet on deck for breakfast. Cooking, sunbathing, sailing, and enjoying the talents of young and old alike in spaces designed for daily life.

Your choice of sailboat model will depend on your budget, the number of feet you want according to the size of your group, the type of engine you are looking for, the ideal number of cabins...

All you have to do is choose your ideal partner!

The catamaran : the ideal boat for travelling

Whether you are embarking on a solo trip, with friends, as a couple or as a family, and whether you are sailing around the world for a year, the Mediterranean, the Pacific or the Indian Ocean, it will be necessary to choose the best travel companion for what will become one of the most beautiful epics of your life.

Ideal for long-distance travel thanks to its many advantages combining living comfort, sensations, unfailing safety and sailing performance, the sailing catamaran seems to be a quality choice for embarking on great adventures across the seas and oceans of the globe.

Designed for communal living with its large living spaces ensuring privacy for everyone thanks to its large cabins, as well as for an optimal sailing experience guaranteeing safety and rigorous technique, the sailing catamaran will quickly become the sailboat and home of your dreams for a long crossing. Like a new heavenly stopover.

So, whatever the route, set course for the destination of your dreams and take on the challenge of your life by planning your crossing... and why not your round-the-world catamaran trip!

Nautitech 44 Open

nautitech_44_open_3

Description

Nautitech have extended their range with the 44 Open, an evolution of their line of cruising catamarans. Once again, Marc Lombard has been tasked with developing the range with this new model that sits between the 40 and the 46.

She comes with a new interior layout, improvements to the rigging and good looks. The Nautitech 44 Open should prove popular. Once again, Nautitech are aiming for more performance from this design compared to much of the competition, like the Leopard 42 , the Lagoons and Fountaine Pajot. That does mean you will need to compromise on some living space though.

For those looking to max out on performance there is the option of an overlapping genoa (similar to the Excess 14 which has also gone down this route) to replace the standard self-tacking jib, plus options for a carbon mast and bowsprit for your gennaker, spinnaker or  Code 0.

The new boat has plenty of green energy options as well including up to 1760W of solar, lithium battery upgrade and an option to go for a ‘SMART ROOM’ which could be a workshop, utility room or storage for your sails and toys. That’s not as much solar as some of the out an out ECO cats (read out Windelo 54 review for example), but it is a sizeable chunk of solar, more than enough for the 44.

Nautitech 44 Open Boat Tour – Katamarans

  • Sporty helms with direct feel to the rudders and full visibility of the sails. The downside here is protection of course, although there is an option for helm biminis- they’ve improved these too – much smarter.
  • All the lines back to the helm for short handed sailing. In the 40, you reef from the mast.
  • An option for an overlapping genoa to replace the self tacking solent. Less convenience, but more power. Take your pick.
  • Lots of living space up top with that Open concept, she feels much bigger than the 40 inside in the Saloon with a forward facing nav station and a big galley to starboard.
  • She’s a quick, seaworthy boat if you keep the weight off with that low slung boom.
  • I like those new davits and the wrap around helm seats: very smart. You’ll see these on the Nautitech 48 flagship as well.
  • The aft helms won’t suit everyone in a blow. With reduced visibility to the opposite bow when you are in the marina, you might need to nip up to the deck every now and then.
  • Less space down below compared to other cruising catamarans due to the slender hulls. So no walk around berths, for example.
  • The inside seating area looks small with so much room given over to the forward facing nav station on the port side. That just leaves room for an ‘L’ shaped sofa behind. I prefer the layout on the 46, but you do have plenty of seating space outside. Still, I prefer the layout on the 46.

In the interiors, there is a choice of a Walnut interior or a light oak finish with a range of upholstery options.

Choose between four layout options: including 4 cabins with 2 heads, and a 2 cabin boat with 2 heads plus the Smart Room.

What is the price of a Nautitech 44 Open? How much do these catamarans cost? That will depend heavily on your options of course, but to give you an idea, the price for a basic boat will be in the region of €700k plus taxes. A higher spec’d 44 will come out around €850k. Get in touch if you would like some help spec’ing a boat out.

A great evolution for the brand. Marc Lombard has built on the success of the 40 and 46 Open and stayed true to the “Nautitech DNA” with sporty helms, shapely hulls and by keeping the weight down. The new Smartroom concept looks interesting, and options such as the overlapping genoa and solar power system are compelling. I’d like to have seen more seating space in the saloon though.

Since 2002, Nautitech has been getting the autumn boat show public used to a regular succession of new boats. The 40’, then the 47’ in 2004 are restyled developments of the 395 and 475. This year, the 44’ has a new design and styling, the result of more than 18 months of prior study with the Mortain-Mavrikios design office.

Bruno Voisard began in leisure sailing in 1978 as a joiner; he later founded a charter company in Brittany and quickly started to show an interest in developments overseas. After Sea Tour, he created VPM, in partnership with Nouvelles Frontières. Since then, he has taken over the Nautitech brand, up until then the property of Dufour, and re-launched the 40’ and 47’ - completely reworked, but built in their predecessors’ moulds. The range has met with deserved success and it was time to design a brand new boat to fit into the range between the 40’ and the 47’.

Test Nautitech 44

The 44 returns to the successful silhouette of the Nautitech 40 and 47. A very pretty boat!

The Nautitech 44’

The old 435 (an extension of the 395) was a good boat which could have had a second production life, but the loss of the mould led the designers to create a completely new boat. The Mortain-Mavrikios design office’s experience in this sector was to be a determining factor (moreover it reinforces the coherence of the range’s signature). They needed a ‘classically’ inspired catamaran which answered today’s expectations, as much for the regular customers as for the new charter clients or the phili...

Brand: Nautitech 442

catamaran nautitech 42

The Nautitech 441 and its sister ship, the 442, share many of the same characteristics, including infusion-molded hulls and decks, the latter incorporating a PVC foam core; a wide choice of optional equipment packages; a couple of different interior layouts, one with four staterooms and the other an “owners version” with three cabins, the largest of which is a suite that encompasses the entire starboard hull; a pair of small keels for stability and tracking; and even a very nifty water-catchment system incorporated in the boat’s rigid hardtop.

The difference in the two boats is in the steering arrangements: The 442 has twin helms, set all the way aft and outboard, to port and starboard, respectively, while the 441 has one wheel mounted in a dedicated steering station at deck level to port of the roomy central cockpit.

Count on 6.5 knots for a voyage, with a best day’s run of 208 nautical miles while recording a top speed of 17 knots—all very respectable numbers for a 44-foot cruising boat.

Nautitech 44 Open (2024) 'SempreVerde'

Nautitech 44 open

The Nautitech 44 Open is the latest design in the Nautitech lineup to get really excited about!

This new design builds on the successful Nautitech ‘Open’ concept and so delivers a ‘wide grin’ sailing performance. The 44 Open is probably the fastest cruising catamaran available for a bareboat charter. She can point higher than any other cruising cat (that does not have daggerboards -which consume interior space), thanks to her high aspect sail plan, tight sheeting angles, high aspect rudders, a draft of 4ft 9“and an excellent sail area to displacement ratio. The Open 44 remains stable, comfortable, and downright fun to sail on and off the wind.

Optimized cruising speeds are a result of the low wetted surface area enabled by narrow, hydrodynamic hulls below the waterline. While the hard-chined stepped hulls above the waterline give more interior living space.

You have an unobstructed view of the sails and the sea thanks to the double aft helm station positions; you can communicate and enjoy the sailing with all the crew members in the cockpit.

In a change from the design of the Open 40, the lower mainsheet track positioning is easy to adjust and see for perfect sail trim from the helm station. A low boom above the coach roof allows for extra efficiency from the mainsail, more sail area and easy access to the sail bag. The high aspect furling, and self-tacking jib, with all control lines led aft to electric winches for both sails, means the 44 Open is a breeze to sail short-handed.

There is rich joinery in the interior of the 44 Open which gives a warm and modern ambience aboard. The cockpit flows seamlessly into the saloon (the ethos of the Open concept) giving you the ideal indoor/outdoor living space for a yacht in the tropics. The galley conjoins the saloon and cockpit, so matter where the crew are, the chef is part of the socialising. The interior saloon area is cosy and offers a modular seating arrangement with cushioned cubes that can be moved around into a day bed, a footrest, or stools.

With the almost 360-degree view from the entrance of the saloon, you can happily escape (rare!) inclement weather or socialize at the cockpit table whilst still keeping an eye on your surroundings.

Thanks to a double-drawer fridge, cockpit fridge and freezer unit, there is excellent fridge capacity aboard.

Both hulls feature 2 cabins. The aft cabin has a queen-sized island bed and the forward cabin has a forward-facing double bed.

The seamlessly integrated companionway benefits from extra storage lockers. Both hulls have separate shower units and toilets allowing for easy living between guests. The toilet unit also has its own hand basin.

There is an integrated solar array on the coach roof as well as solar panels mounted on the dinghy davits. This removes the requirement to run your engine or generator to charge the lithium batteries on board on sunny days.

Some defining features that set SempreVerde apart are:

  • Starlink High-Speed Internet which is included for all charters in 2024
  • Nespresso Original Line Machine (remember to bring your own Nespresso pods as these can be hard to source in the BVI)
  • Three B&G Chartplotters (one at each helm station and one at the nav desk)
  • Multiple 110V outlets
  • Large lithium battery bank and large solar array (essentially eliminating the need to charge batteries using engines or generator)
  • Fresh-water hot/cold deck shower
  • Fresh-water deck hose
  • Exterior window coverings to keep the interior cool
  • Two fully finished forepeak cabins with USB outlets and lighting
  • Mast camera to make mooring ball retrieval easier
  • Two VHF radios (one handheld)
  • Separate throttle controls at each helm station to make docking and close-quarters maneuvering a breeze

Andrea J Smith , May 2023, BVI Dear Horizon, Courtney, Sandra,  Henry, and Jalon, We can’t thank you enough for all you have done over the years to make this dream trip possible for us. Stan and I have been sailing the BVI since our honeymoon in 1986 and sailing with Horizon since 2000. Through the years we have sailed with our own children and this year also sailed with 3 generations to include our 3 and 4 year old granddaughters for a perfect week. We can always count on everyone at Horizon to take great care of us and we are so very grateful for this week where our lives came full circle and we were able to share this beautiful place with the 3rd generation of our family.

Find Your Rate Check out our special offers

Did you know Horizon’s charters start and finish at noon? This means we can get you out sailing your first afternoon after your briefings – remember to watch your video briefings to speed up your check out! At the end of your trip, you sail back to Nanny Cay to refuel and debrief before your noon departure. This gives you a full 6 nights/7 days chartering around our beautiful islands, unlike some companies that start at 5pm, meaning you will have to sleepaboard* at the docks, and then finish at 10am, again meaning you will probably have to stay overnight on the docks the night before you leave to fly home.

*If available, a sleep aboard can be added the night before your charter start for a small supplement, boarding your yacht after 5pm.

Our standard charter rates are applicable for charters of 5 days or more up to a maximum of five weeks. For a tailored quote for charter durations outside this range please contact our reservations team who will be pleased to assits.

Current Rates

Weekly rates (full 7 days / 6 nights) are listed above as daily rates. Charters start and finish at noon. Our minimum charter duration requirement is 5 nights.

Super Tender your Vacation with Horizon Yacht Charters!

catamaran nautitech 42

Licensed for 6 persons, this 15ft RIB with 60HP Yamaha outboard will get you and your crew to snorkelling spots and the beach in style and comfort.

Make your charter yacht vacation a breeze – enjoy the comfort of being able to tie up your yacht for the night and then continue exploring the surrounding bays! You can pick up your mooring ball at the Bight and then head to the Indians or the Caves for a snorkel. If you visit the Dogs, there’s no need to choose only one snorkel spot for your lunch stop, zip around them all!  A swim ladder makes boarding easy from the water.

For popular spots where it’s trickier to find a mooring, the RIB is the perfect alternative. Settle into Great Harbour, Jost Van Dyke for the night and then take the RIB to White Bay for the afternoon to enjoy painkillers without the hassle of finding a mooring ball or having to move your yacht for the night.

The North Sound boasts a selection of some of the best dining options in the BVI. There’s no need to settle for only one spot when you have the RIB. Pick up provisions from Leverick Bay, enjoy the plunge pool at Nova in Deep Bay, and then zip back to the sound for sundowners at Saba Rock before enjoying dinner at The Bitter End.

If you have a mix of snorkelers, beachgoers, shoppers and sailors onboard then give your group flexibility by taking the standard dinghy included in your charter as well. This will also remove the need to make multiple dinghy trips ashore for larger groups.

Get more out of your sailing vacation with Horizon- ‘Super Tender’ it!
