Tech billionaire Michael S. Dell’s MSD Partners purchased the exclusive Hamilton Harbor Yacht Club in Naples for $16.625 million on Sept. 27. The seller was Collier Enterprises Inc., a Naples-based real estate investment and development firm that also sold its Old Collier Golf Club last week to Hoffmann Family of Companies for $45.333 million, the recorded deeds show.

Dell is the founder, chairman and CEO of Dell Technologies computer IT  company and also the money behind The Athens Group’s redevelopment of the Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club, which closed in May and is proposed as the future home of a Four Seasons resort. Dell’s MSD Partners and MSD Capital control a luxury portfolio that includes the Boca Raton Resort & Club purchased two years ago. MSD, which has offices in New York, California and West Palm Beach, is a private investment firm established in 1998 to exclusively manage the assets of Michael Dell and his family.

Hamilton Harbor Yacht Club is tucked away in a protected harbor off Naples Bay on 28.38 acres at the southern tip of the city of Naples near Naples Botanical Garden, Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Gordon Pass and Keewaydin Island. Developed by Collier Enterprises in 2008, the private club has 25 floating wet slips and an advanced boat storage facility that can hold as many as 325 boats. Its Old Florida-style clubhouse with full-service restaurant and bar.

In an emailed statement, MSD says everything is “business as usual” for now.

Patrick Utter, senior vice president of Collier Enterprises, the club’s seller, confirmed the ownership change. “Collier Enterprises is proud of the stellar reputation established at The Old Collier Golf Club and Hamilton Harbor Yacht Club over their storied histories. Our company wishes the members and new owners all the best going forward, as we continue to focus on our network of business entities and endeavors.”

Hoffmann made an initial offer to buy the yacht club but backed out of the deal before purchasing the 18-hole championship golf club days later in North Naples. Situated along the Cocohatchee River, west of U.S. 41, the property originally was purchased for $7,299,000 in December 1998 by the Old Collier Golf Club Inc., an affiliate of Collier Enterprises.

The Hamilton Harbor marina property, 7065 Hamilton Ave., had last sold for $350,000 in July 1999, county property records show.

Beautiful Yacht club on the intercoastal waterway. Service was on point and food was delicious. You do have to come with a member in order to enjoy the place, but it was well worth it.

We had lunch the other day at Hamilton Harbor. Cyndy, our server, was pleasant as always. The lunch was delicious. I had the Caesar salad with grilled shrimp. My husband had a sandwich and soup. Everything is always made with care and we appreciate being members.

I was there as part of a group attending as winners of a charity auction. The location is wonderful, food excellent and the service, friendly and very professional! If you are looking for something out of the ordinary and within reach, this is a must for consideration!

Great atmosphere. Service in the restaurant was wonderful. Small wine list but very good selection (including 2008 Sassicaia and Rubicon Rutherford). Had the oysters and tempura shrimp. Yum!

Meet the Hamilton Harbor Yacht Club Chefs cooking up goodness in this year's Paradise Wine and Food Experience in Naples

Chef Carlos Torres starts his day promptly at 7 a.m. at the Hamilton Harbor Yacht Club in East Naples.

He and his team start setting up for the shift, prepping ingredients, setting the menu and making food for the staff.

“We actually make lunch and dinner for the team every day, and this,” he gestures around the room, “is our cafeteria, believe it or not.”

It's almost hard to. 

The second-floor dining room looks out over the yacht club’s harbor. The water sparkles in the mid-morning sun, and light streams through the mangroves that stand guard over the fuel station in the crook where the canal meets the bay.  

The restaurant was designed to look like a lighthouse. Inside, the walls and bar are decorated in rich, dark wood. Plush leather chairs accompany each table. The vibe is unmistakably nautical.

Torres is the only executive chef from a yacht or country club who has been invited to participate in this year’s Paradise Coast Wine and Food Experience at Cambier Park in Naples this November.

“It was one of those things where we weren’t really sure if we fit,” Torres said.

“We were and still are the only club again this year where a lot of it is free standing more well-known (restaurants).”

The club saw an uptick in memberships and name recognition after last year’s experience.

“That was when we realized that being the only club out there was actually kind of a benefit to us because a lot of people had no idea this place existed,” Torres said. 

Torres and Hamilton Harbor’s pastry chef, Sean Dwyer, recently attended a practice session in Punta Gorda for the national culinary Olympic team. The team usually practices in bigger cities like Orlando, Miami or New York City. Dwyer and Torres said that practice alone shows how Southwest Florida has grown.

“I think Naples, in general, in the past five to seven years, has kind of put its name on the map as being a really good food town,” Torres said.

“To see (the Olympic team) here was just a little telling as to how this town is evolving, how food is evolving here. I think it really staples Naples and Southwest Florida as being a pretty well-looked-after food town at this point.”

Dwyer nodded. 

“It’s coming.”

While the duo has not yet concocted a menu for the Paradise Coast event, they said they have two goals in mind: Make sure their food pairs well together, and prepare as much as they can ahead of time.

“We try to ying and yang, the dessert or small bite,” Torres said.

That means the chefs are intentional when they create their menu. They want to make sure the food tastes good and that the dessert and small-bite entrée can function as a unit; that whatever they serve reflects what they do on a day-to-day basis.

Take, for example, the menu Dwyer and Torres cooked up last year, a tuna dish with a green-tea macaron.

“We try to do a seafood dish clearly because we’re on the water. We’re a yacht club. You know, there’s no reason to go there and try to do a venison or something,” Torres said.  “So we always try to make sure that I’m not doing something that’s so spicy that when they go eat his they can’t taste what they’re actually eating. So, it’s complementary.”

Once menu is set, they start preparing.

Torres said that one of his biggest challenges is creating something that will ‘wow’ guests but that will fit on two little tables, can be stored in coolers, and can feed 800 to 900 people in a rush.

“You’ve got to be really, really, really efficient and not shoot yourselves in the foot by trying to do something that’s overly ambitious that you can’t get on a plate. Because when they open the doors, people come flooding in,” Torres said.

He and Dwyer are no strangers to hectic culinary life. The chefs have been working in the restaurant industry since they were teenagers.

Dwyer worked in a deli his father owned near Sacramento, California. Later he attended culinary school in Portland, where he specialized in the culinary and bakery programs. 

 “Honestly, my favorite dessert to make is the one I haven’t made yet,” Dwyer said.

“I don’t ever want to feel comfortable. I always want to do something new. Even if it’s kind of tricky, I’ll want to figure it out. I want to make little mistakes and try to fix it.”

Torres recalls growing up surrounded by food at the produce distribution company his stepfather owned. He climbed towering crates of fruit and then eventually found himself experimenting with tastes. He worked as a busboy, working his way up to dish washer, prep cook, short-order cook and so on. 

“In most chefs you’ll talk to, once it grabs you, it’s got you. And you’ve just got to figure out if it’s something you’re willing to do or you’re not. You have to love it, because if you do not love it, it will eat you alive," Torres said.

Everyone told us to get the Calamari ~ oh yeah !! And husband had rack of lamb perfectly cooked, and my dinner was the best fish ~ like a seabass ~ perfectly cooked, and i needed simple so just ordered some sliced tomatoes ~ wonderful.... Since i skimped on dinner calories, we split a pecan pie..... The martini to start was ice cold, the champagne was fresh, and i sipped some of husband's coffee to end the evening. We ate outside, and watched a marvelous storm of lighting and wind and then a bit of rain. The staff was GREAT! They knew we were reciprocals but treated us as Members. Thanks you Folks! More

Recent addition Chef David has things humming on all cylinders with a delicious creative dinner menu that his knowledgeable profession staff serve in a delightful manner. Other diners, like ourselves, appreciate the time he will take to speak to us about his fare. It's almost... like discussing your menu for dinner with you personal chef. So, don't be afraid to ask if you're early diners like us when the kitchen isn't being taxed. What impresses the most is his careful sourcing of ingredients, viz.: plump sweet oysters from Washington State, super fresh sushi grade Ahi tuna shipped direct from a fish monger in Hawaii, ditto Mero (a sea bass-type fish native to Pacific waters favored by Japanese), really fine meats. On this night one of us had a very flavorful cowboy steak of wagu quality, and all of us were able to sample it. We all agreed that it had excellent flavor and texture. Sharing a dessert over coffee and enjoying the post-sunset in this top-shelf marina was not too shabby either as it was a delightful way to end another memorable meal prepared by this wizard of a chef. We were on Hamilton for 6 nights and planned to go there for our 40th Wedding Anniversary- It never opened the whole time we were there.

This was our second visit -- lunch on the first occasion - and the venue doesn't disappoint with the restaurant cleverly located on the first floor (European naming convention) to make the most of the view.. Our dinner was well cooked and with excellent presentation... -- congrats to the pastry chef. The staff were extremely friendly, however many seemed not not particularly well trained. Perhaps because many might have been temps for a large group. A relaxed atmosphere really helped add to the enjoyment of the evening. More

There were 8 of us that when to Hamilton Harbor on Feb. 28th., 2015 for dinner...It was a cool rainy night...Service was great..and things only got better..everyone's meal was great...4 of us got the Japanese SeaBass and it was wonderful...We will go back....very good...

Have been an invited guests on a few occasions and have always enjoyed my experiences. The main dining room is casual and surrounded by windows looking at the harbor and boats. The menu is varied and has something for all tastes. The calamari is NOT... to be missed! The staff is accommodating and attentive. The downstairs is for private functions and a nice place to gather with friends. More

I ate here as a guest twice this month for dinner and loved the place! The food was top class - fish flown in from Hawaii to local snapper.... the short rib apptz. and fig and pear salad were also wonderful! We got to view... a beautiful sunset over the gulf among some amazing yachts. The staff was very kind and great with wine selections and knowledge. I hope I get invited back again! More

Around the bend from Gordon Pass, just minutes from the Gulf of Mexico, lies Hamilton Harbor Yacht Club. Located on the edge of the Rookery Bay National Reserve, Hamilton Harbor is wrapped by 160 acres of preserve, including protected natural wetlands and one and one-half miles of shoreline.Next to the Rookery Bay National Reserve, the facility will provide boat owners with convenient access to the Gulf of Mexico. The 117,000-square-foot boat house will contain 325 dry slips and is built withstand 150-mile-per-hour winds. The building will accommodate vessels up to 50 feet long and will include a private yacht club and ship store. Designed by GCM Contracting Solutions, the boat house will be made of non-combustible and fire resistant materials.

Full disclosure time. I had been granted special dispensation to attend the private boat show party on behalf of Gulfshore Life , but it wasn’t my first time impersonating a dues-paying member. In fact, I’ve been wangling invitations to Hamilton Harbor for years—ever since my son Charlie’s nanny, Britta Schulze, made the mistake of showing me a photograph of him enjoying lunch on an elegant teak deck with a pristine water view.

“Were these cushions made from the skin of newborns?” Tom asked the shocked salesman. I was glad to note Tom’s enthusiasm for the boat—and that no animals or humans were harmed in the making of the super-soft, marine-grade cushions.

Hamilton Harbor Yacht Club Members receive a 10% fuel discount and the option to have club staff fuel their boat for them. The Hamilton Harbor Fuel Dock is the closest fuel service to Gordon Pass…just look for the lighthouse!
