Offshore Powerboat World Championships return to Englewood Beach Waterfest, Nov. 18-21

powerboat races englewood

ENGLEWOOD BEACH – The Offshore Powerboat Association World Championships returns to Englewood Beach, as part of Englewood Beach Waterfest, slated for Nov. 18-21.

In 2019, the last time Englewood hosted that race – which is scheduled for Nov. 20-21 – it featured more than 70 boats and had become the largest race on the circuit.

The race can attract up to 40,000 people, with more than a half-million people in the Midwest watching on livestream.

Steve Gardiner, president of the Englewood Beach Waterfest Inc. board of directors, has previously said that translated into an $8 million impact on the local economy.

NMB RV Resort and Dry Dock Marina, based in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is the keystone sponsor.

“They've signed on to be our primary sponsors for this year and for next and they also have a boat racing, Gardiner said. “They’re in it with both feet up to their hips.”

The resort is both seeking to draw people to South Carolina and contemplating expanding into Florida, Gardiner said.

After a slow start with local sponsors, those have picked up, too. “This is the best year we’ve had for sponsorships, ever,” Gardiner said.

Earlier: Englewood Beach Waterfest canceled in 2020 because of COVID-19

The nonprofit Englewood Beach Waterfest also distributes money to other area nonprofits.

In 2019, it gave $7,500 to six different local nonprofits.

More than 60 boats – including between four and six entries in the unlimited super boat class – have expressed interest in racing. More than 70 are anticipated to show up on race weekend.

That field will likely be affected by what happens in Key West, Nov. 7-14, at the Race World Offshore World Championships. If a boat wrecks or develops problems then, there’s not enough time to recover and be ready for Englewood Beach.

Some racers may opt out of Key West because of cost.

“We were told by some of the racers that they’re not going to go to Key West because its’ expensive to race there with hotel prices, so they’re skipping it,” Gardiner said.

Tickets for Waterfest are $20 online at  www.englewoodbeachwaterfest.com   or $25 at the gate, and include parking and bus transportation to Englewood Beach, where parking is always limited.

Children 12 and younger are free but do need a children’s ticket.

Online ticket sales end at 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 19.

VIP passes of $100 for one day or $150 for both days include parking and transportation as well as a VIP tent and complimentary food, mixed drinks, beer and wine.

Busses run from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. There are two distinct routes. The red route bus starts at the Elks Lodge, then travels to Englewood Shopping Center by Obee’s and the SunTrust Bank to the beach.

The green route travels from Lemon Bay High School to Beach Road Bistro and then the beach.

There are no coolers, alcohol or pets permitted on the buses or at the beach.

Gardiner noted that there are still spaces available for food trucks at the beach, and Sunday volunteers are also needed.

Volunteers typically meet Nov. 17 at the Elks Lodge for an orientation and to receive a T-shirt. Volunteers and vendors can sign up and learn more on the web site.

For more information on either, call 941-473-9795 or email [email protected].

Events include a Pre-Race Party, PowerUp from 5 to 10 p.m., Nov. 18; and the Waterfest Block Party from 5 to 9 a.m., Nov. 19 at Englewood Shopping Center, 262 S. Indiana Ave., Englewood.

Related: Dearborn Street businesses put best foot forward ahead of road construction

The shopping center is standing in for Dearborn Street as the Block Party location this year, while Dearborn Avenue is under construction.

“We can probably get 50 to 60 boats in there,” Gardiner said, then added that Waterfest has rented generators and lights, to illuminate the parking lot.

Between 11 and 14 classes of boats will race both Nov. 20 and 21. Races start at 10 a.m., while gates open a 9 a.m.

Waterfest Village on Englewood Beach will be open Friday, as well as all day Saturday and Sunday.

Mote Marine Laboratory will have six exhibits at the village, while others will be from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Friends of Stump Pass, Josh the Otter and the Lemon Bay Conservancy and the Peace River Wildlife Center with Luna the Owl.

Other children’s activities include face painting, a butterfly encounter, sand art and a scavenger hunt.

As for the races, as many as four different boat classes may be on the 4.3-mile offshore course at one time.

“We re-did the race course this year to bring it in,” Gardine said. “So, it’s really out in front of Englewood Beach.”

OPA Englewood Beach World Championship Essentials

The final offshore races of the 2022 season, the Offshore Powerboat Association Englewood Beach/Waterfest World Championships are on tap this weekend. An estimated 40 to 45 teams already are in town and more will be arriving throughout the day in the Southwest Florida waterfront community. OPA president Ed Smith said he’s expecting “50-ish” teams to compete, which is down from last year’s record-setting 69-boat total but understandable given the lodging challenges in the area left by Hurricane Ian.

Teams in the V-bottom classes will vie for Offshore Powerboat Association and Union Internationale Motonautique world titles based on their Saturday and Sunday results. In an intriguing wrinkle, Saturday’s race has been added to OPA’s own national championships and those champions will be crowned Saturday evening.

Bracket classes will comprise the majority of the fleet. As it usually does in Englewood Beach, the Bracket 700 class will have the largest group with 11 teams expected to compete this weekend.

On the spec-class side, LSB/Hurricane of Awesomeness team owner/driver Brit Lilly said he is expecting five Stock V teams including his own to show up, which would meet the minimum number of teams required for a UIM title. Super Stock-class representative Ryan Beckley said three Super Stock teams—his 32-foot CELSIUS Doug Wright catamaran not among them this year—are expected to compete in Englewood Beach this weekend.

Likewise, newly crowned UIM world champion Taylor Scism of TS Motorsports said she’s expecting three boats—her MTI 390XR included—to compete in the 450R Factory Stock class.

At least one Extreme-class boat, the 42-foot JBS Racing MTI catamaran piloted by Jeff Stevenson and Micheal Stancombe, also will be in the weekend mix.

powerboat races englewood

Though it likely won’t have any competition, the JBS Racing catamaran will put on a show in Englewood Beach.

A race-by-race schedule has not been released as registration is still open, but competition is slated to run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday, according to the OPA website, on the four-mile, seven-turn course.

All of the action will be streamed live on the OPA Racing Facebook page . Speedonthewater.com contributing editor Eric Colby and chief photographer Pete Boden will cover all the action for the daily high-performance powerboating news site.

The Englewood Beach Waterfest had an impressive number of boats racing for the Offshore Powerboat Association (OPA) World Championships yesterday.

Rich Wyatt and Hugh Fuller won Unlimited in DF Young with the under powered Miss GEICO taking second.

Throttle-man, Steve Curtis said after:

We were seeing reasonable speed with the 1100 horsepower engines, competing against boats with about 800 more horsepower. We had a sea strainer go which got everything wet, and slowed us down. Tomorrow, we’re going to go out and run as hard as we can, and try to push DF Young. If it’s bumpier, we might have a bit of a chance, so let’s race.

Nick and Austin Scafidi took the Super Stock class honours while FJ Propeller rolled out on a turn mark, both crew members, Jimmie Harrison and Gary Ballough were unharmed.

Englewood is situated on Florida's Gulf Coast. Travelers who eschew the Spring Break scene will find a taste of "Old Florida" in the town of Englewood, 50 miles north of Fort Myers. When you're not enjoying the miles of tranquil beaches along the Gulf of Mexico, try boating, fishing or bird watching – or bring your clubs to one of the town's eight golf courses.

H2O Racing

Abu Dhabi , UAE, Monday, 09 June 2003 - With the Federation of Russia Grand Prix scheduled for August 17, the UIM Powerboat Homologation Committee plans to visit the site of the race, not far from Moscow center, from June 16-20, 2003. The Federation of Russia Grand Prix is the fifth race on the 2003 UIM F1 Powerboat Championship calendar and the ninth time that an F1 Powerboat Championship event takes place in Russia.

Organisers of the 2003 event plan a great show for an expected 50,000 spectators. Since 1989, FI Powerboats have raced in Minsk (1989), Leningrad (1990,1991), St Petersburg (1995,1996) and Moscow (1997, 1998 and 1999).

"After three years away, I am happy to see the F1 Powerboat Championship back in Moscow, thanks to the Moscow Government and to 7TV Sports Television Channel," said Nicolo di San Germano, promoter of the UIM F1 Powerboat series. "This Grand Prix is an exciting new event, even though the Federation of Russia has hosted F1 Powerboat racing before.

"The last Grand Prix in Moscow gave us a lot of action on the river in the city's famous Gorki Park. But the 2003 edition will take place in Strogino, seven kilometres away from the center of Moscow. Found by Pierre Bogdanov, President of the Russian Federation Motonautique, this new location will allow FI Powerboat racing on a much wider circuit, compared with Gorki Park. "

The charismatic di San Germano has worked assiduously since 1993 to make F1 Powerboat racing a global sport. "I am gratified to see that some of the concepts that I initiated have begun to take root," di San Germano said. These include among others proper racing pits and hospitality units.

"In the last ten years, the F1 Powerboat racing programme has taken the contenders to Asia, Europe and the Middle East, and Far East" di San Germano said. The promoter has dreams of additional locations in the future. "But today," he said, "I really hope that the Homologation Committee will find that the circuit in Strogino meets all the necessary criteria for a good show, perfect organisation, and, above all, safety."
