One day course £200

The RYA level 1 is a basic introduction to powerboats. It is a one day course that will explore the following:

  • boat preparation
  • boat handling at slow and high speed
  • mooring alongside and on a buoy
  • launching & recovering off a trailer
  • safety, and basic rules of the road

We aim to spend most of the day on the boat so after a briefing and introduction ashore we get kitted up and onto the water. This is a really good introduction to powerboating – no previous knowledge or experience is required, so this is a great course for those who are to young to do the level 2 course, and for those who just want a shorter taster than the more comprehensive two-day level 2 course.

Certification: The RYA Powerboat Level 1 certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the course.

Kit and Clothing: We will provide you with a range of equipment including a waterproof and lifejacket, however you are more than welcome to bring your own if you wish. Please note we do not provide footwear.

2 day course  £290

While the RYA level 1 course is available, for most people the RYA powerboat level 2 course is the best place to start. The PBL2 is a two day course and provides the skills and background knowledge required to turn the beginner boater into a competent powerboat driver. The course focuses on both theory and practise with the main focus being on boat handling and safety. Your instructor will cover the following topics with you during your day with him/her:

  • Boat handling
  • Launching and recovery
  • Leaving and coming alongside
  • Securing to a buoy
  • Man overboard

The shore based element of the course will cover the types of craft and their advantages and disadvantages, engines and drives, use of power tilt and trim tabs, safety checks, personal buoyancy, awareness of other water users, application of the collision regulations (IRPCS), local bylaws, towing and being towed, communication with other craft, emergency action, distress signals, fire precautions and fire fighting, and rope work.

Certification: Upon successful completion of the course you will be issued with.a certificate. The RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate requires a passport photograph. Please remember to bring a photograph with you, otherwise we will not be able to issue your certificate.

RYA Intermediate Powerboat Course

2 day course £330

While the course content seems similar to the Powerboat level 2, the main difference if level to which each one is covered and the practical application of skills. The course will address directly the use of electronic aids such as GPS, looking at the integration of these aids with techniques such as “The railway track”, “the spider’s web” etc.

  • Basic pilotage and passage planning for small boats.
  • Chartwork balancing the use of GPS and use of charts in a small craft.
  • Correct use of GPS (XTE (cross track error), SOG (Speed over ground), BTW & DTW).
  • Other areas such as tides and weather.

The tidal waters offer a range of conditions and challenges for those looking to improve their powerboating skills and this course is suitable for anyone wanting to build upon current powerboat driving skills.

Certification: Upon successful completion of the course

RYA Advanced Powerboat Course

2 day course £340

The advanced powerboat course is aimed at experienced amateur powerboaters and professional users. It is a two day course and aims to teach boat handling, seamanship, pilotage and navigation up to the standards required to drive a planning powerboat safely by day and night in tidal coastal waters with which the candidate is familiar. Individuals considering attending an advanced course should possess their National Powerboat Certificate Level Two (Coastal), be very competent powerboat handlers and have a level of knowledge of navigation and chart work to the level of Coastal Skipper Shore based certificate. If you are unsure about your capability in this area, please contact us and we can quickly assess this for you. Your instructor will cover the following topics with you during your course: Preparation for sea Boat Handling (inc rough water) Passage making Pilotage Meteorology Rules of the road Use of engines Emergency situations Undertaking searches Night cruising

Certification: The RYA Advanced Powerboat certificate requires a passport photograph. Please remember to bring a photograph with you, otherwise we will not be able to issue your certificate. It is strongly recommended that you have a copy of the RYA Powerboat Logbook G20

Kit and Clothing:  We will provide you with a range of equipment including a waterproof and lifejacket, however you are more than welcome to bring your own if you wish. Please note we do not provide footwear.

About The Scheme

The RYA Powerboat Scheme was first developed to provide a qualification for dinghy sailing instructors and club safety boat drivers using powerboats to cover their dinghy fleets.

It has grown from its original concept into what is now the most popular scheme offered by the RYA.  The Scheme is applicable to sportsboats, RIBs, dories and launches and other boats that don’t provide accommodation and cooking facilities.

The lowest age limit for RYA training in powerboats is 8 years old (RYA PB 1 only)

Eight to eleven year olds should only use powered craft under the supervision of a responsible adult on board.

The minimum age for an RYA PB2 Course is 12 years old, Those aged 12-16 should only use powered craft under the supervision of a responsible adult.

A Summary of the RYA Powerboat Scheme courses is given here:

The Right Powerboat Course For You

Level 1 Start Powerboating.  This course is to provide a practical introduction to boat handling and safety in powerboats and the course duration is 1 day.  The minimum age for students is 8 years old.

Level 2 Powerboat Handling.  the course is designed to teach boat handling and seamanship in either planing or displacement boats.  No previous knowldege is required for this course.  The minimum age is 12 years old.

The RYA Powerboat Intermediate Helm (Day Cruising) course covers the practical use of pilotage and passage planning by day on coastal waters using both traditional and electronic navigational techniques.

This course builds on the foundation knowledge of the Level 2 Powerboat Handling course and is suited to those who aim to drive larger more powerful powerboats. During the two days you will cover, cruising at planing speed and more advanced boat handling. It is recommended for anyone considering moving on to the Advanced course

This course is for leisure and professional boaters wanting to undertake more adventurous trips by day and night.

It includes navigation at planing speed, weather and other aspects of skippering powerboats on more challenging passages in coastal waters. Given the nature of these passages Advanced Powerboat courses should be delivered on powerboats of a minimum of 6 metres and an engine size sufficient to enable coastal passages at planing speed.

The RYA/MCA Advanced Powerboat exam is a practical test of skippering ability by day and night in the type of craft applicable to the National Powerboat Scheme.

Direct Assessments

Direct entry assessments can be provided for the Powerboat Level 2 (Powerboat Handling) certificate.  Candidates should have the equivalent of at least one full season’s powerboat-handling experience and must be able to complete all of the practical elements of the Level 2 syllabus and have sufficient theory knowledge as outlined in the PB2 Syllabus and Logbook.

Those seeking a coastal PB 2 Certificate must demonstrate sufficient knowledge of tidal waters/situations.

Please call the centre should you wish to undertake a Direct Entry Assessment.

Becoming An Instructor

If you’re interested in passing on your Powerboating knowledge to others and have the neceesary pre-requisits, you may wish to become a Powerboat Instructor.  PPSA will run 1 or 2 Powerboat Instructor Courses a year according to demand.

The course will be run by a Powerboat Trainer who has been trained and assessed to deliver the course to the required standard.  Each course will be moderated on the last day by another, separate RYA Powerboat Trainer.

The course is preceded by a skills assessment to ensure that candidates have the powerboat driving skills required of an instructor.  These skills are based on the RYA Powerboat Level 2 skills.

Hi Len & Sue

We just wanted to drop you an E mail to say how much we enjoyed the Powerboat Course.

From start to finish the whole process has been smooth and enjoyable. Sue was extremely swift and helpful answering all questions beforehand. Len's knowledge was excellent and made learning a large amount of information in a short period of time enjoyable and informative. The hands on experience was excellent and we all 'had a go' until we perfected the manoeuvers. Len is extremely patient (even if he had to tell me to "Steer before gear" 20 times). He made me feel comfortable and confident in my ability. Not easy for a nervous driver! We would recommend the course to anyone thinking of purchasing a boat or just going out to 'mess about on the water'. We hope to be back for some more instruction in the future.
