Transom Brackets For Small Outboards: Fulton Rates Best

In our test of eight transom-mounted brackets, the fulton was the easiest to operate. garelick's model for motors up to 20 hp earns runner-up honors, and omc's unit deserves consideration..

sailboat boat motor mount

The most common form of auxiliary propulsion for small sailboats is the outboard motor. On some boats, it is mounted in a well forward of the transom. Such arrangements conceal and protect the motor but may not allow it to be tilted up to get the prop out of the water when sailing. More common, perhaps is the mounting of a bracket on the transom. These generally have two positions—up and down—for lowering the motor’s prop into the water, and raising it. Brackets should be strong, durable, and, most importantly, easy to operate without having to hang out over the transom.

Transom Brackets For Small Outboards: Fulton Rates Best

What Was Tested We rounded up eight brackets from five manufacturers—Fulton, Garelick, Triangle, Minn Kota and Outboard Motor Corp. (OMC). Prices ranged from $95 to $380. All are manually operated, except for the electrically powered Minn Kota.

Early on we discovered that your choice depends not only on the outboard’s horsepower and weight but also on whether it’s a two- or four-stroke. We understood why weight and horsepower make a difference but weren’t sure why a four-stroke would require a special, and subsequently more expensive, bracket.

“It’s the increased torque and thrust of a four-stroke,” said Jayson Klade, a Fulton Industries technical representative. The four-stroke’s greater force imposes more stress on the bracket; therefore it needs to be stronger than a bracket for a two-stroke.

How We Tested The main criteria for evaluation was ease of use, but also considered was the ease of assembly and mounting, quality of materials, price and instructions. We noted how sturdy each bracket was by shaking the motor from side to side and fore and aft while placing the bracket in several positions—a “wiggle test,” if you will. We also measured the range of motion, or vertical distance, of each.

To test, we collaborated with our sister publication, Powerboat Reports, whose editor owns a 21′ walkaround with a large outboard; his interest was mounting a small backup “kicker.”We had a local machine shop weld up a stainless steel plate that could be bolted to his boat’s transom and used to mount the brackets.

Three motors were used—a 2000 Nissan 5-hp four-stroke, a 1980’s-era 9.9-hp Mercury two-stroke and a 1970’s 15-hp Evinrude. We hauled the boat, mounted each bracket and tried all three outboards on each one.

What Was Found The three Garelick models, the four-stroke Fulton model and the OMC bracket included 3″ bolts; the other Fulton bracket came with 2-1/4″ bolts, too short for the 2-1/2″ thick transom. This was annoying as no one likes to interrupt a project with a trip to the hardware store.

Minn Kota and Triangle included no hardware.

Instructions that came with most of the brackets were fairly good, advising where to mount them so the outboard could perform properly. Minn Kota failed to offer this information, and the Triangle came with no directions.

All but one bracket—the two-stroke Fulton—offered clearance between the motor and the bracket handle when tilted. Most used some sort of spring as its primary lifting and lowering mechanism. All except the Triangle and Minn Kota included raised strips of polypropylene or stainless steel on the mounting boards to prevent the motor from sliding off.

We were surprised that OMC and Garelick’s instructions advised that the motor be taken off before trail-ering the boat. We figured the brackets would face much more stress at sea than rolling down the highway. But representatives from both companies told us otherwise. A bump in the road can cause more damage than a large wave, they said.

“The G-forces are greater on the road,” said Dean Devore, OMC director of product development.

Only one bracket, the four-stroke Garelick, came with a safety harness to prevent the motor from sinking to the bottom if it came off the bracket.

All Fulton and Garelick models offered at least four levels to adjust outboard trim. Two of the three Garelicks—the up-to-8 hp and up-to-20 hp models—included flange-type brackets that allow you to convert the unit from a negative transom setup (an angle greater than 90°) to a positive transom (an angle less than 90°, seen mostly on sailboats). But the conversion involves swapping the brackets, reversing their position and adjusting the springs. Each of the five adjustment holes represents a 7° increment.

With most of the coil-spring models, you must be very careful while operating the bracket when it is not mounted on the boat. The force of the springs is so great that you could seriously injure yourself if you trigger the release with a finger or hand inside the mechanism. Garelick’s instructions provide several warnings; Fulton’s instructions do not.

Fulton: Two-strokes up to 10 hp We found this model extremely difficult to raise, so much so that we had to put our left knee on top of the transom and our right foot in the motor well to gain enough leverage to move it. The difficulty stems from the unit’s lack of springs and the fact that you must simultaneously push the one-arm lever aft and up, which is very awkward. Lowering the unit wasn’t much easier.

Fulton representative Jayson Klade said the company recognizes this problem and may discontinue this model because of it. He said he has had calls from older owners who have had trouble moving a 2-hp outboard on this bracket.

Transom Brackets For Small Outboards: Fulton Rates Best

The unit itself is solidly built, with an anodized aluminum bracket and a polypropylene mounting board. However, the bolts used to secure this board to the bracket were rusted. We suggest replacing them with stainless steel.

This was the only bracket that presented clearance problems. The Evinrude 15’s steering arm hit the bracket’s lever handle, and the Mercury’s choke smacked it when the motor was tilted.

Bottom Line: Not recommended, mainly due to the difficulty we encountered raising and lowering the unit.

Fulton: Two- and Four-strokes up to 30 hp This model, also anodized aluminum, was much easier to operate than its little brother, due to its four springs, 1-3/4″ wider stance and larger, two-arm lever. With all three engines, we needed only one hand to operate it.

However, we found two drawbacks. First, installation requires shimming (placing a 1″- to 2″-thick block of wood or aluminum between it and the transom) if mounted below the rubrail and on a flat transom, such as ours. Without a shim, the lever handle will hit the transom. In addition, shimming may require longer mounting bolts. Second, the springs obstruct eight of the 12 mounting holes, making installation more difficult. (Use a long screwdriver to bend the spring ends out of the way.) Fulton recognizes this design flaw and is working on it, said Klade.

Bottom Line: Recommended. The easiest to operate.

Garelick: Two-strokes up to 8 hp The body of this unit is stainless steel. Its four torsion springs helped us lift and lower it easily. You can also lessen the spring tension by cutting up to three of the four springs if lowering the bracket is too difficult due to the use of a light motor.

Click here to view the Transom Brackets Value Guide.

Our main complaint with this bracket was the sloppy play (fore and aft) in the up position encountered during the wiggle test. Even with its locking mechanism engaged, the bracket afforded too much play.

Bottom Line: Easy to use but its sloppy play is a drawback.

Garelick: Two-strokes to 20 hp This is essentially the same bracket as the smaller Garelick, except its longer body gives greater vertical travel, and it includes eight springs instead of four. We encountered no wobbling and found it to be even easier to operate than the smaller Garelick.

Bottom Line: Recommended. Only the Fulton four-stroke model is easier to operate.

Garelick: Two- and Four-strokes up to 30 hp This model is well-made and the only one equipped with two locks and a safety harness. Unfortunately, we had great difficulty lowering all three outboards.

The motors were not heavy enough to overcome the unit’s spring-loaded tension. Garelick says it becomes easier after you get the feel for it. We never did. The company does not advise cutting the springs on this model, so we have little confidence that it will work with motors up to 15 hp. We’d only use it for heavier motors, such as those from 20 to 30 hp.

We also discovered that this unit requires shimming to be installed on a boat with a flat transom. (Like the small Fulton, we were only able to mount it because the stainless steel plate acted as a shim.) The directions do point this out: “Add a 1″ shim if the release handle is at or below the rubrail or the top of the transom.” But some of the diagrams show a successful mounting on a flat transom. This is misleading and confusing to the installer.

Note: Garelick listed the wrong telephone number in the directions. The correct number is listed at the end of this story.

Bottom Line: Recommended only for use with engines from 20 hp to 30 hp.

OMC: Two- and Four-strokes up to 15 hp Unlike the Fulton and Garelick brackets, this model operates with a gas-filled cylinder. It was easy to operate, accomplished by moving a small lever with a red handle to positions marked “raise” or “lower.” To lower, simply jerk the motor up slightly and push down; to raise, push down on the motor, and the lift unlocks and rises. However, unlike most of the others, the OMC does not have multiple positions for engine trim—only two, up and down.

“We’ve found that most people only use one level anyway,” said OM’s Devore. “Rarely do they want to change settings.” For $380, the most expensive motor lift in our group, the consumer might prefer this option. (The device’s shock alone costs about $100, according to Devore.)

Like Garelick, OMC warns against trailer travel with the engine on the boat. It goes a step further, though, advising the owner to attach a rope to the engine in “choppy water,” suggesting to us that the manufacturer is not very confident of its product. “Perhaps that could be worded better; we are just being overly cautious,” said Devore.

OMC recently introduced a larger bracket made of die-cast aluminum (the model we tested is a combination of die-cast and stamped aluminum) for outboard motors up to 125 pounds that retails for $380.

Bottom Line: Works very well, but price is a drawback.

Triangle: Up to 10 hp This unit came without hardware or directions. Its wooden mounting board is susceptible to rotting because raw wood is exposed on the inside of its four mounting holes. In addition, we couldn’t safely attach the 9.9-hp Mercury because the 7″-wide mounting board was too narrow. The circular pads of the engine’s bolts hung off the plate. With no directions, we weren’t sure whether this bracket could hold four-stroke engines. We called Triangle, and a representative ruled them out.

Another concern is the spring on this stainless steel unit; it failed to hold the weight of the Nissan and Mercury motors. We discovered this abruptly when the Nissan came crashing down after we had released the locking mechanism. Needless to say, we believe that this bracket needs a stronger spring.

Bottom Line: Not recommended, due to its weak spring, very narrow and unprotected wooden mounting board.

Minn Kota: Two- and Four-strokes up to 20 hp This was the only electrically powered (12V) bracket tested. We found installation easy, the directions simple and the motor, which turns a jack screw to raise and lower the mounting board, worked effectively.

Even though this unit is listed in the West Marine catalog, it is not intended for saltwater use, which explains the steel components (only the mounting board is anodized aluminum). Minn Kota may come out with a saltwater version in 2002, said spokesman Dave Golladay.

We thought the electrical connections were inadequate (for salt- or freshwater use), especially the two spade connectors that attach to the unit’s motor. They are directly exposed to the water.

The silicone meant to protect the motor’s housing was sloppily applied, hanging off and failing to cover certain spots.

The Minn Kota flunked our wiggle test. The two arms attached to the jack screw don’t offer enough support. We would attach a third arm—there’s room.

The jack screw is a potential problem, too, because it sticks out when the unit is up, leaving it open to be struck by the corner of a dock or other solid structure. Golladay said, “These are all very good points. We’re trying to enhance that product line. Our primary focus is trolling motors.”

Bottom Line: Not recommended. An automatic bracket is a great idea, and one we’d like to see developed, but the Minn Kota’s subpar materials and construction make it difficult to recommend.

Conclusion The Fulton four-stroke bracket is our top choice for any size outboard. It does require some shimming, but its solid construction and ease of use place it ahead of the pack.

Our runner-up, the Garelick (up to 20 hp) was extremely easy to use, and it’s $60 less than the Fulton. But it’s limited to two-stroke engines, which leads us to this point: Because four-strokes are becoming more popular, it does not make sense for manufacturers to continue producing brackets for two-stroke use only. We think it only confuses the consumer. (For instance, we’ve received reader letters asking why some motor lifts are restricted to two-stroke motors.)

Case in point: A 5-hp four-stroke does not produce as much torque as a 20-hp two-stroke, and yet the Garelick (up to 20 hp) restricts all four-strokes.

The OMC bracket was also impressive, but you have to be willing to pay. The smallest Garelick worked well, but its failure in the wobble test is a concern.

We don’t think you should consider the other models because they had, in our opinion, too many flaws.

Installing Motor Mounts

  • By Steve D'Antonio
  • August 31, 2022

motor mount

It comes as a surprise to many boat owners that the only thing transmitting thrust from the propeller to the vessel’s hull, moving the hull forward, is the motor mounts. And, that the only connections between the prop and the hull are four ½-inch or 5⁄8-inch studs. A great deal of faith must be placed in those studs, so it’s worth making sure they are properly installed and maintained.

And not just because they transmit thrust. A motor mount also absorbs vibration and torque, using a rubber or synthetic material as the medium. It’s difficult, if not impossible, to design and construct a motor mount that does all three tasks equally well.

Absorbing vibration requires a softer durometer, while transmitting thrust and contending with torque requires a more robust durometer. The engine wants to counter-rotate in the opposite direction from the prop, which means the mounts on one side of the engine are compressed more than those on the other side. In some cases, the mounts on one side might actually be lifted, which means they are in tension rather than compression. For this reason, some engine manufacturers specify different durometer mounts for left and right.

Taking these variables into account, most mount designs must represent a compromise across the range of use.

rust

Commonly, the cause of motor-mount failure is related to installation and the length of exposed stud. Ideally, motor mounts should not be adjusted to the limit of their travel, up or down. Motor mounts are the primary mechanism for adjusting engine location relative to the propeller shaft, otherwise known as alignment. The coarse adjustment should be performed by the boatbuilder or engine installer using shims, or by removing some of the stringer to depress the mount.

The goal is to get the engine bracket, which connects the engine to the mount stud, somewhere in the middle of the coarse-adjustment range. Then fine adjustment takes place, with the engine being moved a small distance up or down. If the engine is at the top of the stud’s adjustment at the end of this process, the leverage imparted to the stud can lead to its failure. If the engine is at the bottom of the stud’s travel, no further adjustment is possible—a potential problem for future alignment.

Fasteners used to secure the mount’s base to the stringer or shelf on which it rests should be a through bolt, machine screw or lag bolt, in that order. Through bolts offer the greatest security. Machine screws that are screwed into a tapped metal plate embedded into the stringer are a close second, although if they strip, repair can be difficult. Lag bolts are less than ideal because their coarse threads are engaging fiberglass and likely timber, which can fracture or strip if overtightened. And, if the timber gets wet, it will rot, allowing the fastener to pull out.

engine mount base

The fasteners should be the same diameter as the hole in the mount base. There should be no slop or play. If there is, the engine might shift fore and aft when changing gears. Because of the cyclical and reversing nature of loads on mounts, fasteners are prone to loosening. Nylon insert locking nuts or cam-style lock washers should be used to ensure their security. Mounts should be aligned parallel to the vessel’s centerline, and studs should be perpendicular to their base. If twisted, the life of the flexible inserts can be severely shortened.

Motor mounts should be inspected regularly. The studs and the shell (or cap) are usually mild steel, so they should be corrosion-inhibited. Check all adjustment and mounting hardware, making certain it is tight; you’ll need to put your fingers on each one to do this. If you see any indication that the mount base is sliding, that’s cause for concern.

Finally, look for signs of deteriorating flexible insert material, which will often show up as black dust or “crumbs” around the base of the mount.

Auxiliary Motor Mounts and Outboard Motor Brackets

Auxiliary motors often serve as a second source of power for boats and can be very useful if your main source of power goes out. They can also be used as an engine source to propel your boat in a slower manner, often referred to as trolling. These motors are frequently mounted to the bow or stern of your boat with auxiliary motor mounts. Wholesale Marine offers a wide variety of options of outboard motor brackets from leading manufacturers like Garelick , Davis , Sea Dog , and Moeller Marine .

Motor Mounts and Brackets For All Types of Engines

Determining the right type of auxiliary motor mounts will depend on the type of engine you need to mount. For a bow-mounted auxiliary motor, spring-loaded outboard motor brackets work best and provide protection from grounding.  Garelick Platform Mount Auxiliary Motor Bracket is made of Stainless-Steel Hardware and is made for motors up to 15 HP.

For transom mount motors, it is a good idea to have adjustable brackets that will allow for different heights and angles to ensure that the motor is submerged to the right depths. The Garelick Auxiliary Outboard Motor Bracket to 7.5 HP allows the motor to swing up or down and has a 4 position height adjustment.

Wholesale Marine also offers tools that make auxiliary motor maintenance and repair easier. The Garelick Outboard Motor Stand makes storing your outboard motor during winter or while making repairs easier. The Garelick Outboard Motor Carrier makes transporting your motor to and from your boat almost effortless.

No matter what type of auxiliary motor you have, we have the motor mount you need to make sure your motor is secure and ready for use whenever you need it. Have questions about which auxiliary motor mounts are right for your boat, contact our team of boating experts at 877-388-2628 Monday through Friday 9:00 AM until 6:00 PM EST. Inquire about our Captain’s Club Rewards Program for additional discounts on future purchases.

Hunter 23 outboard motor mount

I have a 1990 Hunter 23, and would like to upgrade my original Tohatsu 5hp outboard to a new 4-stroke outboard. Two questions: 1.) Are there any advantages to the 4-stroke (I only burn 2 gallons or so per season) and 2.) Can the original motor mount (which appears to be an L-shaped piece of fiberglass with 4 bolts holding it to the transom) take the extra weight. My original 2-stroke Tohatsu weighs in at about 44 pounds, the new 4-stroke lists at 57 pounds. Thanks for any help!

Don't quite follow why would you want to upgrade unless the old two stroke is giving you problems. The cost and additional weight might not be worth it if you only burn around 2 gallons per season. Sales of new, small two stroke engines have been banned in the US so those with weight considerations will be treasuring grandfathered-in two stroke engines. Check the current condition of your motor mount and how much flex it may impart on the boat's transom.

Crazy Dave Condon

added weight to the factory outboard may or may not affect your outboard motor bracket. If going to a heavier engine, I would suggest a new bracket be installed but there are two things you would have to do. First you will need to either build or purchase a shim to offset the motor bracket due to the reverse transom on the Hunter 23. Secondly, you will need to beef up inside from the storage locker to include distributing the load of the weight. What you want to do based on the size engine and the fact it is not used that much, stick with what you have and check the bolts (tightening) on that bracket. Benny17441 pretty much said that well.

Thank you Benny and Dave. Yes, the old two stroke is having gas leak problems. I had it repaired 3 years ago (it is 27 years old) for over $400 (two different repair shops). The culprit was, I believe, a leaky fuel pump. It stayed leak free for awhile, but now can drip out 8 oz or more of gasoline in 2 weeks. Visual inspection indicated that the fuel pump is continuing to leak and that there is some kind of leak at the prop. I'm not ready just yet to install a new engine; however another big repair bill is not causing me joy. The decisions I need to make are 1) try another repair, 2)buy a used two stroke if they are out there and 3)buy a new motor, only four stroke engines are now available. One website suggested that a 1990 5hp Tohatsu is worth $450 used.

Crazy Dave, thanks for the steps to update the motor bracket. My original bracket shows some flex when I accelerate the engine or back it down. I have no idea of what the engineering of that bracket may be. I'm guessing fiberglass covered wood core?

Yes. Research the archives here as there is much on that subject of a new bracket but what ever you do, brace inside is a key.

Crazy Dave, I will do some research. Thanks for the guidance. I often read this forum and always look forward to your accurate and insightful replies to all sailboat questions.

There has been a time or two I was corrected so remember even the ones who know do make mistakes too. I do own up to them. A good example early on telling folks never to lower the mast in the dark and what did I do, made a trip to Florida for a new H 26 mast of course on my nickel.

Brian M H23

My 23 had a piece of angle aluminum screwed to the plywood backing plate on the inside, and a second lag-bolted into some plywood stringers epoxied to the hull. between these two pieces were several aluminum strap and bolts. I had a 10 HP motor and would regularly use the motor mount as a swim platform - really sturdy!

sailboat boat motor mount

Overkill with the stringers but structural indeed. Thank you for sharing sir.

The Best Outboard Motor for a Sailboat

best-outboard-motor-for-a-sailboat

Last Updated by

Daniel Wade

June 15, 2022

The technology of sailing has remained mostly unchanged for centuries. Since learning to harness the power of wind, sailors have been transiting the world’s oceans, expanding trade routes and exploring new cultures. Although nothing more than a renewable natural resource and a single sail is needed to move a sailboat along the water, there are times when it’s important (and in our modern age, convenient) to leverage off a motor to get you where you need to go.

Like any unique piece of equipment in the world of sailing, outboard motors come in a variety of sizes with features and options to fit any owner’s needs. But of course, one size doesn’t fit all. Every boat is different – even those that come off the production line at the same time – and every owner is looking for something specific when it comes to their sailboat. From the purpose of owning the boat (blue water sailing vs. racing) to the location and impact on maintenance (cold weather vs. tropical weather), an outboard motor is just one of the many elements that will define a sailboat’s function and performance.

Whether you’re a new owner, or a veteran sailor, it’s important to know the basic components of any outboard motor . You should also have an idea of what you want your outboard motor to do for your size and model sailboat.

Table of contents

Outboard Motor Size

A larger boat doesn’t necessarily mean a larger motor. Although there are different ratings for different classes of boats, a small power plant can be more effective than a larger one. Conversely, an outboard motor can easily overpower a small boat and create unsafe conditions at high speeds. Guidelines and requirements differ between motorboats and sailboats. And while there is some overlap, these considerations apply directly to sailboats.

Engine power has to do with how much water a boat displaces. For sailboats, smaller is better. If you’re a bit of a math geek, the exact formula is 4 horsepower for every 2200lb of weight. Coupled with a propeller size, which can be determined using a propeller calculator , you’ll get a rough estimate to use as a guideline to start shopping. This is a good first step, since size is essentially a fixed variable. Though it’s worth noting for those who are buying a sailboat directly from the manufacturer, that actual weight will increase after delivery – once all other rigging and outfitting has been completed.

Physical size of your outboard motor is an important consideration and is directly related to the design of your sailboat. An outboard motor is made up of three parts from top to bottom:

  • The Powerhead – Houses the engine. The bulbous part of the motor.
  • The Midsection – Houses the exhaust system. Varies in length and design.
  • The Lower Unit – Propellers attach to the gearbox. Submerged when operational.

Shaft length is an important design element and should be considered when purchasing a motor. A shaft that is too short will obviously prevent the propeller from being submerged in water, while a shaft that is too long will extend the propellers too far. Not only will it decrease the efficiency of your engine, it will create unnecessary drag. Know your transom length when looking at different models.

When an outboard motor is not being used, it should be stowed in its upright position. Some of the larger motors have an automated switch that will raise it out of the water, but some must be secured manually. Make sure everyone who sails with you is capable of lifting and securing the motor out of the water in case of an emergency.

Outboard Motor Power

Any kind of motor installed on a sailboat (inboard or outboard) should be viewed as a tool to help with maneuvering. Although there are some very skilled sailors out there who can sail into their slip without the aid of a motor, many harbors have restrictions that either don’t allow for the use of full sails, or there simply isn’t enough room to maneuver. A motor with both forward and reverse gears helps tremendously with docking.

While there is no exact correlation between boat length and total weight, the following is a rough guideline:

  • 1-4 HP for boats up to 20’ (approximately 1000-2000lbs)
  • 4-18 HP for boats between 20-30’ (approximately 2,000-10,000lbs)
  • 18-34 HP for boats between 30-40’ (10,000lbs or more)

There are some things to consider when deciding how much horsepower you need or want. Location and the type of conditions you expect you’ll be sailing in is one of the biggest factors. Heavy seas and high winds typically associated with open ocean sailing will put more strain on your engine, and in some cases overpower it, whereas an engine that is heavier than needed will add unnecessary weight when racing. If you plan on motoring for long distances, consider purchasing an engine that will stand up to a lot of use.

Less HP is required for:

  • Boat Design – Single hull boats made out of fiberglass require less power.
  • 2-Stroke Engines – This is due to an overall lighter weight engine and higher torque.
  • Diesel Engines – Diesel delivers more torque because the rate of compression is greater.
  • Bigger Propellers – More surface area means more water displacement.
  • Location – Motoring on lakes and rivers requires less power than open ocean.
  • Distance – A smaller engine is suitable for shorter distances.

More HP is required for:

  • Boat Design – Catamarans and heavier boats (regardless of size) require more power.
  • 4-Stroke Engine – Engine weight and an extra step of compression yields less power.
  • Gas Engines – The rate of compression for gas engines is much lower than diesel.
  • Smaller Propeller – A smaller propeller displaces less water.
  • Location – Open ocean, with tides and currents, will strain a smaller engine.
  • Distance – Cover more distance when wind conditions are poor requires a larger engine.

Outboard Motor Cost

There is no way to quantify how much you will pay for any given motor. But there are several costs associated with owning an outboard motor that are definitely worth considering when making your purchase.

Certainly, a lager, more-powerful engine is going to be costlier than a smaller engine with lower horsepower. But as mentioned earlier, size is not necessarily a guarantee of performance and efficiency. At the same time, there’s only so much you can get out of an engine before you exceed its capability. Larger engines tend to help with resale value should you choose to sell your boat at some point, but a boat outfitted with right motor to begin with will always perform better than a motor that’s large just for the sake of it.

Factor in maintenance costs and fuel when looking at models. You want to run your engine at around 90% of its max RPMs to balance proper fuel usage and with wear and tear. Making a few calls to marine mechanics to inquire about an engine you’re interested in will give you a lot of information a sales person won’t be able to give you. The good news about outboard motors is that most of them are portable, which means you won’t have the added cost of either paying a mechanic to come to you, or having to get your boat to the yard, which usually requires help from a very good friend willing to spend all day driving and sailing back and forth.

Owning a boat requires constant care and maintenance, so a little knowledge goes a long way. While an outboard motor is not required for sailing, it’s a convenient addition that can greatly increase your enjoyment out on the water. Being patient and spending time researching engines will not only help you make the correct purchase but will help you take advantage of a great deal when it presents itself. Whether you sail the Caribbean, or race off the coast of California in a catamaran, there is an outboard motor that’s just right for you.

‘Flamin’ Hot’ Review: Neon Dust, Hollywood Corn

The actor Eva Longoria’s feature directing debut is a fictionalized account of the birth of a spicy, profitable snack.

  • Share full article

A man wearing a blue button-up shirt with a Frito-Lay patch stands among rows of chip bags.

By Lisa Kennedy

“Do I have initiative?” Richard Montañez (played by Jesse Garcia) asks his wife, Judy (Annie Gonzalez), in the dramatic comedy “ Flamin’ Hot ,” directed with affectionate brio by the actor Eva Longoria. Montañez, on whose memoir this fictionalized story is based, is eyeing an application for a job at the Frito-Lay facility in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. While he’s stumped about that word — “initiative” — soon enough he’ll embody it, as he goes from being a janitor to becoming a family man behind a Cheetos flavor that extended the snack maker’s reach, launching Montañez’s marketing career.

Garcia and Gonzalez possess poignant chemistry as the economically struggling couple. They first meet as children. He, a child of farm workers, is being bullied in the lunchroom and at home; she has a bruise that suggests they might have more in common than simply being the brown kids at a predominately white elementary school. Montañez’s youth is recounted in a sometimes boastful, sometimes self-deprecating, always upbeat voice-over that softens the edges of his childhood, which include routine bigotry and outright racism, but also brutality and judgment from his father, Vacho (Emilio Rivera).

Montañez came of age in the late ’60s and early ’70s, and the pride and resistance of the Chicano Movement, while adjacent, were not central to his upbringing. Instead, as he tells us in an account that swings from the present to the past, from the biographical to the fantastical, he found friends in a gang. It wasn’t until Judy got pregnant that the pair agreed that things had to change.

From the moment he enters the Frito-Lay facility, Montañez is a dogged learner, asking questions about chemical processes, wondering about an extruder, even celebrating an industrial power washer. His curiosity aggravates his supervisor (Matt Walsh), worries the friend who helped him get the gig (Bobby Soto) and breaks down the defenses of an engineer (Dennis Haysbert) who knows the facility inside out, and who becomes Montañez’s initially suspicious mentor.

The titular flavor, it seems, didn’t happen overnight. Montañez’s stint begins in the mid-70s and takes off in the early ’90s, when the facility faces hard times. An executive, Roger Enrico (Tony Shalhoub), coaches the beleaguered work force to “think like a CEO.” And the ensuing scenes — of Rich landing his hot idea, inspired by the Mexican street corn elote — charm as intended. “It burns good,” the wee-est of the Montañezes (Brice Gonzalez) proclaims as the family samples seasonings.

Longoria, working from a screenplay by Lewis Colick and Linda Yvette Chávez, sprinkles lessons in self-esteem throughout. (The movie is Longoria’s feature directing debut.) And the women here — including Montañez’s mother and Judy — are more than run-of-the-mill catalysts. Still, should it come as a surprise that a movie this puffed up has a dusting of flavors that might not be real ? If you read too deeply about the ingredients that went into “Flamin’ Hot,” you might find enough confusion over whether Montañez actually invented the flavor (as claimed) to make your conscience mildly cramp.

Flamin’ Hot Rated PG-13 for some strong language, and drug talk. Running time: 1 hour 39 minutes. Watch on Disney+ and Hulu .

Listen, I love a delicious salty snack as much as the next guy. And if you promise not to tell my cardiologist, I’ll even admit to having scarfed down my share of Cheetos. But a feature film about the guy who claims to have invented Flamin’ Hot Cheetos? That seems a bit of a stretch. I mean, when I was eating them, I never once thought that the experience would be enhanced by learning the backstory. What’s next, an epic drama about the creator of Twizzlers?

That would be the Mexican American Richard Montañez, terrifically played by Jesse Garcia ( Quinceañera ), who narrates his story, beginning with how as a young boy he sold his mother’s burritos to his fellow elementary school students, introducing them to the joys of Mexican food. His falls in with gangs in his teen years, committing petty crimes, until he goes straight after his wife Judy (Annie Gonzalez, endearing) becomes pregnant for the first time. Through the help of his best friend Tony (Bobby Soto), he manages to get a job as a janitor at the local Frito-Lay plant, with Judy having to help him with the application because of his limited reading and writing skills.

There, he meets Clarence ( Dennis Haysbert ), an extremely proud “self-made” engineer who keeps the factory machinery humming. Richard takes an interest in the mechanics, wanting to learn how everything works. After initially being suspicious, Clarence, basking in the attention, ultimately makes Richard his protégé, patiently explaining how the products are made.

Bringing his world-changing discovery to the attention of Frito-Lay CEO Roger Enrico (the ever-versatile Tony Shalhoub ) is another problem. Inspired by a motivational workplace video featuring Enrico that his fellow workers barely take notice of, Richard takes the bold step of calling the executive directly and pitching his idea. Intrigued, Enrico tells Richard to prepare a presentation, and despite his complete ignorance of marketing, Richard manages to sell him on testing the idea thanks to his unbridled enthusiasm that goes a long way toward compensating for his unpolished delivery.

The first test of the product falls flat, with consumers showing no interest. But Richard enlists his friends and family to give out free samples to the local Hispanic community, and the product soon takes off like wildfire. The rest, as they say, is history, with Richard rising to be a vice president at the company.

After seeing the film, I diligently began to do some research, quickly discovering that Flamin’ Hot may not quite be the true story it purports to be. I promptly stopped digging any further, not wanting to learn any troublesome reality that could diminish my appreciation. After all, as we learned from another terrific movie, when the legend becomes fact, print the legend.

‘Flamin’ Hot’: A snack food success story, seasoned with baloney

Jesse garcia and tony shalhoub star in a cheesy comedy inspired by the story of the invention of flamin’ hot cheetos.

flamin hot movie review

The poster image for “Flamin’ Hot” — a feel-good comedy/success story that purports to be the true tale of how Frito-Lay janitor Richard Montañez came up with the idea for a spicier version of the snack-food giant’s products, marketed to Latino customers — features a play on Michelangelo’s “The Creation of Adam” painting from the Sistine Chapel ceiling, but with a bright red Cheeto in the outstretched hand of Jesse Garcia as Montañez.

It’s a nod to the fact that this origin story, based on Montañez’s memoir, “A Boy, a Burrito and a Cookie: From Janitor to Executive,” has a certain aura of myth around it, as if the precise details of its narrative require a leap of faith before they can be swallowed. (In 2021, as publicity for the film, directed by Eva Longoria, geared up, the Los Angeles Times wrote an exposé calling into question many of Montañez’s claims about his role in the invention of Flamin’ Hot-branded snack foods.)

This review will not resolve any of that, except to say that the film, written by Lewis Colick and Linda Yvette Chávez, does try to inoculate itself against accusations of stretching the truth, staging many scenes as the unreliable reminisces of its narrator, Richard, who after one particularly self-aggrandizing scene says, “Judy says I exaggerate this part” — referring to his wife (Annie Gonzalez) — before replaying the same scene in a manner probably a little bit closer to reality.

To say that the film is, well, cheesy, is no hyperbole. Although Garcia makes for a likable hero, the acting is broad, with the actor sporting a variety of obvious wigs. These help carry the 40-year-old Garcia from a troubled high school dropout in the 197os — in this telling, a gangbanger involved in drugs, guns and car theft — to a goody-goody blue-collar worker and family man with so much initiative (a word he could at one point neither define nor read) that he eventually proposed the idea for Cheetos made with a seasoning of hot peppers directly to PepsiCo CEO Roger Enrico. Tony Shalhoub plays the godlike head of Frito-Lay’s parent company as Richard’s savior, falling so under the spell of his can-do employee, said here to be able to sell “water to a whale,” that Roger drops everything to produce the new product.

A subplot involving Richard’s abusive, alcoholic father (Emilio Rivera) gets stretched out to saccharine effect, with ample time left for the prerequisite scenes of redemption and forgiveness. It’s a meal that may make you want to gag a little and reach for the nearest can of Pepsi to wash down the hoo-ha. There’s so much product placement here, it gets in the way of all the unearned emotionalism.

It’s not especially new to see a story about a guy who pulls himself up by his bootstraps, even one this hyperbolic. One might say that “Flamin’ Hot” is just another serving of cinematic junk food: corn chips sprinkled liberally with the moviemaking equivalent of maltodextrin.

PG-13. Available on Hulu and Disney Plus . Contains some strong language and drug-related material. 129 minutes.

Flamin’ Hot review – under-seasoned Cheetos biopic sticks to the formula

The man who invented Flamin’ Hot Cheetos gets his time in the sun but Eva Longoria’s by-the-numbers drama leaves questions

A film telling the story of a Mexican American janitor who went on to create a $1bn snack brand fits into Hollywood’s current cultural and creative moment rather perfectly. It’s been a time both of exploring the dramatic origins of everyday products and services (from Nike’s Air Jordans to BlackBerry to Tetris to Uber) and of finding more ways to tell diverse stories outside of a prohibitively limited lens, a lens that’s been particularly limited for Latino characters.

Despite Latino audiences over-indexing at cinemas in the US (in 2021, they had the highest per-capita attendance, averaging 1.7 visits a year compared with 1.3 for white audiences), there remains a disappointing dearth of big-screen representation (a report last year showed that just 5.2% of leads in film were Latino or Hispanic). Ahead of this summer’s landmark DC adventure Blue Beetle, centering a rare Latino superhero, Eva Longoria has found an unlikely success story to propel her to the title of film-maker, having cut her teeth on television. Her small-screen tutelage is hard to shake in this earnest and at times efficiently entertaining, yet also rather plodding rags-to-riches tale that aside from the odd flourish, feels very much like a TV movie.

It’s hard not to get at least mildly involved though in the story of Richard Montañez, as he grows up as a kid balancing his Mexican-American identity in 60s California while being targeted at school and physically abused at home. Longoria, and the screenwriters Linda Yvette Chávez and Lewis Colick, keep things light even as Montañez (now played by Jesse Garcia) falls into a life of crime with his partner Judy (Annie Gonzalez) by his side. The arrival of a baby forces them to reconsider but an unwelcoming job market, one especially unwelcoming for someone who looks like Richard, makes life a constant struggle. When he gets a job as a janitor at the local Frito-Lay factory, he takes the opportunity with all the enthusiasm he can muster, smiling through various indignities and grateful to be providing for his family.

Mopping floors and cleaning equipment isn’t quite enough, though, and when business starts to crumble with a recession-impacted market and a string of layoffs, Richard comes up with an idea, a way to cater to the underserved Latino market, to make the Cheeto … Flamin’ Hot.

There’s some obvious mirroring here, the adaptation of a story of someone striving to appeal to a growing yet underappreciated demographic attempting to do the exact same thing, and while the recent trend of business origin stories has been hit and miss to say the least, it’s at least refreshing to see someone who isn’t a straight white man progress within industry (2020’s Madam CJ Walker series Self Made felt similarly vital, if ultimately superior). The film neatly recognises the importance of food as cultural identity and the authenticity that should come with parlaying this into a just business proposition – but while there’s an easy underdog tale here to cheer on, it’s not quite as compelling as the makers seem to believe. Similar to Ben Affleck’s Air (a film that would have worked far better had Viola Davis’s force-of-nature mother been the lead), it all feels a little too minor, a Wikipedia page writ medium.

Because even the most magnetic moments (a montage of Montañez and family crafting the perfect chilli sauce, a late-stage grassroots marketing campaign) become dubious with even the lightest bit of research. These films, when done even half-correct, compel one to dig further into the facts, to learn more about the reality of the situation and it doesn’t take long to discover that Flamin’ Hot became the centre of controversy as soon as it was announced. The Los Angeles Times ran an investigation that found that Montañez’s involvement with the creation of the Flamin’ Hot Cheeto has not just been overstated but has been fully fabricated. Since then, a he said, they said back-and-forth has left the situation even foggier (the script was slightly tweaked to recognise the work of a separate team working on a similar project with one of the writers saying “enough” was true for it to work and it shouldn’t be seen as a documentary) and so the facts remain a mystery.

One accepts a certain amount of creative license with “true stories” and Montañez’s rise from the bottom to the top is undeniable regardless of his level of involvement with the snack in question, but taken as fact or fiction, the film just isn’t enough of a meal. It’s cheerily done and competently made but broadly sentimental to a fault, the strings being pulled too visible for the film’s many coerced moments of emotion to really work. For a film all about the importance of heat, it’s frankly lukewarm.

Flamin' hot review.

A colorful, pleasant biopic that lacks spice, but still serves as a tasty snack..

Flamin' Hot Review - IGN Image

Flamin' Hot does not revolutionize the biopic, nor does it reveal anything particularly biting or insightful about the creation of the groundbreaking and beloved snack from which it draws its name. But what it does offer is a crowd-pleasing story of perseverance, a celebration of Chicano culture, and a rather funny story with an unreliable narrator that plays out like a feature-length version of Michael Peña's Luis narrating gossip in the Ant-Man movies.

Eva Longoria's feature directorial debut deals primarily with two moments in history: first the Chicano movement of the '60s and '70s, as Mexican-Americans fought back against systemic racism and oppression with a movement that celebrated their culture and identity in the open. It’s tackled with a solemn eye that celebrates how far Latinos have come in America while condemning the systemic oppression that still plagues the community. Then, Longoria takes what can be a boring subject – the Snack Wars of the 1990s, where manufacturers struggled with slumping sales in a post-Reagan recession and innovation became key – and makes it fun.

Smack in the middle of these two events we find Richard Montañez (Jessie Garcia), one of 10 siblings raised in a migrant labor camp in California where he faces a lack of opportunity, racist bullies at school, and police discrimination on the daily.

But Richard is smart, he is charismatic, and he works around things. The first act has some of Flamin’ Hot’s best moments as it plays kind of like a comedic Latino Goodfellas that pokes fun at rise-and-fall stories with tongue firmly in cheek. First, we see Richard hustling his way into a lucrative business selling burritos at school to the very bullies who mock his traditional food. Then, after marrying his childhood sweetheart Judy (Annie Gonzalez) and spending a brief time in crime, Richard turns his life around by getting a job as a janitor at a Frito-Lay factory to support his growing family, telling the hiring manager he has a Ph.D.: he's poor, hungry, and determined.

What's your favorite Cheeto flavor?

But wait, you might ask – isn't this supposed to be the movie about the creation of the titular Flamin' Hot Cheetos? Well yes, kind of. Flamin’ Hot gets to its invention and (the now-disputed claims of) how the real Richard Montañez single-handedly came up with the idea of the spicy snack that forever changed Frito-Lay. But the script, written by Lewis Colick and Linda Yvette Chavez, smartly sidelines the snack and instead focuses squarely on Richard’s inspirational underdog story about trying to make a name for himself in a world that wants to bring him down, even if that results in a superficial film.

Flamin' Hot doesn't get that deep into its characters or its plot. After about 15 minutes into this 99-minute movie you pretty much know exactly what each character is about and what they'll do throughout the story. There are all the classic archetypes for an inspirational biopic, including the supportive wife, the disappointed and estranged father, the strict and judgemental (and also racist) boss, and the initially uncaring mentor who grows to be an important figure in the life of our protagonist. The script has as much nutritional value as a single Cheeto, but it compensates with cheerful charisma and a feel-good tone that's primed to please crowds.

That starts with the performances. Jessie Garcia is fantastic as Richard and capable of carrying Flamin’ Hot, capturing the sense of perseverance required by the story, balancing the more business-talk parts of the plot with a good sense of humor and plenty of one liners, turning a character that is otherwise a one-dimensional aspirational figure into someone who’s at least entertaining to listen to.

Flamin' Hot Photos

flamin hot movie review

This is where Flamin’ Hot truly shines: its constant shifting of tones and hilarious fantasy sequences. Longoria uses Richard's narration in a Drunk History manner, showing us a group of actors (mostly businessmen in meetings) acting out what he narrates. This serves two purposes: First, it makes comedy out of dull corporate meetings, as Richard explains the inner dealings of the Frito-Lay company at the time and how it allowed for his success story. But the second purpose is that these scenes paint him as an unreliable narrator, one that gets too excited about his own story, commenting on how his wife always says he exaggerates certain bits. Aided by some fantastic editing and the use of quick cuts, these scenes are the highlight of Flamin’ Hot.

Likewise, Annie Gonzalez's performance adds enough to the character of Judy to give what is a typical supporting wife enough depth and nuance to stand out. She is the rock that supports the entire story, the brains of the operation who wouldn't just sit around waiting for Richard to accomplish something – she is already 10 steps ahead of him. Plus, her no-nonsense attitude when dealing with injustices and naysayers seems designed to instantly bring about cheers in theaters.

All the while, Longoria avoids the washed-out look that plagues so many movies nowadays, instead choosing vibrant colors to celebrate the cultural history of the story being told. During early scenes of protests and parades, or just smaller moments like the family going to markets to buy out every hot pepper they can find, the colors of the chiles pop to a point where you might almost think Flamin’ Hot is presented in Smell-O-Vision. She even plays with – and mocks – Hollywood's usual oversaturation for scenes set in Latin America in a clever way.

Flamin' Hot is not the complex story of the making of the titular snack, nor a deep exploration of Richard Montañez’s life story, but it is nevertheless a feel-good, crowd-pleasing tale of perseverance. Director Eva Longoria crafts a celebration of Chicano culture, one that uses the comedic chops of its lead actor to deliver hilarious narration that makes otherwise dull marketing and business talk become a laugh fest. It’s otherwise a formulaic and unsurprising story, but it’s delivered in a spicier way that makes it more appealing – much like its inspirational snack.

Just as fiercely as the red slurry on Flamin’ Hot Cheetos sticks to one’s fingertips, the apocryphal legend that Richard Montañez, a Mexican American maintenance worker turned inspirational leader, invented the spicy variety of the popular cheese puffs adhered to the collective consciousness. Montañez’s campaign to promote his supposed entrepreneurial accomplishment has resulted in numerous public appearances, book deals, and now a biopic that marks the feature directorial debut of multi-hyphenate Eva Longoria .

Last year, however, The Times published an investigation probing the veracity of Montañez’s claim . Internal records from Frito-Lay and the account of another employee officially tasked with developing the fiery snack in the late 1980s categorically disprove his involvement in its creation or even in naming the product.

The man who didn’t invent Flamin’ Hot Cheetos

Richard Montañez has for years told a story of how he dreamed up Flamin’ Hot Cheetos while working as a Frito-Lay janitor. The archival record, former employees and Frito-Lay itself say otherwise.

May 16, 2021

Based on Montañez’s 2013 memoir, “A Boy, a Burrito and a Cookie: From Janitor to Executive,” the screenplay by Linda Yvette Chávez (co-creator of “Gentefied” ) and Lewis Colick takes the subject’s version of the events as fact for a larger-than-life fictionalized account, which, like Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s recent “Bardo,” could also bear the title “False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths.”

On screen, actor Jesse Garcia ( “Quinceañera” ) plays Montañez with an unwaveringly winsome attitude. The performance traces his youthful days involved with gangs in the 1970s to his transition to a responsible family man eager to land a position at the Frito-Lay Rancho Cucamonga plant and beyond. Flashbacks with Garcia’s Spanglish voice-over walk us into episodes of racial discrimination in Richard’s childhood, his father’s abuse, and his lifelong romance with wife Judy (played by Annie Gonzalez).

In a standout role for an actor regularly seen in more serious parts, Garcia is an utter joy to watch. His disarming lack of cynicism and optimistic disposition while in Richard’s shoes compel us to wish the humble character’s grand aspirations materialize. May “Flamin’ Hot” serve as testament to Garcia’s range and ability to lead a cast. Meanwhile, a marvelous Gonzalez rides a similar wavelength of cheerful determination. A scene where Judy steps in to defend Richard from the judgment of his headstrong father, Vacho (Emilio Rivera), and another where he credits her for his success brim with earnestness.

Tonally, “Flamin’ Hot” plays like an heir to Chicano classics such as “Blood In Blood Out” or “My Family,” which eschewed emotional subtly, yet dignified the Mexican American experience with uplifting themes of pride and unity. Longoria and her actors lean into the cheesiness, pun intended, but not without winking at us in flights of imagination that communicate a layer of calculated mischief. Take as proof the amusing moments when Richard daydreams about corporate suits fighting each other using street slang.

Disney neglected it. Critics panned it. ‘Blood In Blood Out’ became an L.A. classic anyway

The film stumbled at the box office 30 years ago but was saved from obscurity by Latino audiences, who reclaimed it as a cornerstone of their representation in cinema.

April 23, 2023

Previously behind the camera on a few TV episodes, Longoria fully flexes her ability to guide an ensemble into emotionally cohesive scenes. Despite a heavy reliance on snappy, musically driven montages, the end result is visually polished, with bright saturated colors and occasional narrative flourishes that add an unexpectedly idiosyncratic zest to the picture, effectively separating it from staler biographical affairs. Yet, while “Flamin’ Hot” entices us to want to see more from Longoria the director, its reverential demeanor toward a corporation for merely considering the input of its workers as valuable disappoints.

Richard’s ascent from the factory floor to the rooms of power, as told in “Flamin’ Hot,” entailed great tenacity: first asking his superiors to pronounce his last name properly, then shadowing seasoned machinist Clarence (Dennis Haysbert) and distilling his own knowledge of Latino consumers into a blend of chilies to coat an array of Frito-Lay products, before ultimately breaking the chain of command and taking his concept directly to CEO Roger Enrico (Tony Shalhoub).

Platitudes pave Richard’s personal and professional growth here, but even so, the intention to instill a sense of self-worth and the life-changing potential of perseverance feels noble. Rather than succumb to the white majority’s otherizing perception of his identity, Richard weaponizes the stereotypes, in this case Latinos’ preference for potent flavors, in his favor. At its core, the premise sustains that triumph is only worthwhile if earned without compromising your authentic self. Given the disputed details, this now seems a tad ironic.

No one denies the magnitude of Montañez’s rise. That alone merits commendation. But the contested part of his self-enshrined legend, the origination of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, is probably the factor that persuaded book publishers and film executives to invest in his story in the first place. In other words, “Flamin’ Hot” the movie might not exist if not for that claim. That the on-screen Richard repeatedly claims to have embellished how events unfolded reads as an admission of guilt or an acknowledgment that versions may differ.

Taken solely as a product of make-believe, however, and detached from the controversies of the source anecdote, “Flamin’ Hot” turns out to be a surprisingly enjoyable crowd-pleaser. It mostly works because Garcia, Gonzalez and Longoria agree on a poignant, yet not sanctimonious approach that crystallizes the specific fortitude of mining hope from dire struggle.

Personally, I want to believe Montañez, and while it wouldn’t exactly shock me to learn that a man who got rich selling sugar water to the masses might have “added a little flavor to it” (as former Frito-Lay honcho Al Carey told the Times), ”Flamin’ Hot” embraces Montañez’s self-aggrandizing claims for what they are: an inspirational tale of success in a country where Latinos make up a significant segment of the market, but hold relatively few leadership positions.

By his own account, Richard grew up on a winery in Guasti, Calif., and was bullied by the white kids for bringing homemade Mexican food to school. But he got wise quick, packing extra burritos and selling them for a quarter apiece in the cafeteria, turning his tormentors into customers. Before he could spend the money, however, he was arrested by a suspicious white police officer. “When the world treats you like a criminal, you become one,” he explains, sounding like the narrator of “Raising Arizona” or “My Name Is Earl,” as Longoria cuts forward more than a decade to Richard and future wife Judy (Annie Gonzalez) running from the cops.

A few years later, expecting his first child, Richard puts his family first, and Judy remains his biggest believer and champion. When he brings home the English-language employment application for Frito-Lay, she’s the one who fills it out. And when Richard hatches the idea to develop a picante variety that Latinos would like, she and the kids are right there in the kitchen, taste-testing a hundred mouth-scorching recipes. Richard’s other big ally is undervalued and initially stand-offish plant engineer Clarence C. Baker (Dennis Haysbert), who eventually warms to Richard’s interest in his machines, and who encourages him to think big.

From snack foods to studio movies, American businesses have long targeted white consumers. Richard’s innovation came in recognizing that leaders had to be convinced not to overlook Latinos as either customers or colleagues, an obvious-in-hindsight strategy that Hollywood and others have been slow to adopt. Squirming nervously in his necktie and suit, Richard tells slick-haired CEO Roger Enrico (Tony Shaloub) as much when he gets the chance to pitch his idea. The big boss responds to Richard’s initiative, even if the ranks of white flunkies — from the floor manager (Matt Walsh) to a handful of cartoonish boardroom stooges — insist that in the corporate world, new products “do not get created by blue-collared hoodlums.”

Technically, the Flamin’ Hot flavor may have been hatched in a more traditional way: by scientists and marketing execs in a lab. Or maybe not. While the movie commits to Richard’s version of events, Longoria also acknowledges that a development team was already working on something like it.

When Frito-Lay puts the neon-red powder into production at the Rancho Cucamonga facility, Richard samples a chip and says, “It’s not Judy’s, but it’ll do,” so maybe Montañez wasn’t the inventor so much as the guy who got it off the ground.

Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2023 SXSW  Film Festival. It will start streaming on Hulu on Friday, June 9.

It’s an inspiring story that Montañez told for years — he even wrote a book about it — and which has now gotten the biopic treatment, care of the aptly titled “Flamin’ Hot.” But any biopic engenders scrutiny and in May 2021, the Los Angeles Times published an expose about how Montañez didn’t actually do the one thing he’s long said he did. Throughout Longoria’s film, written by Linda Yvette Chávez and Lewis Colick, Montañez’s Flamin’ Hot origin story is told, along with a slew of other lightly buffed-over truths. It’s entertaining enough, but this is a story that doesn’t feel real, mostly because it isn’t.

That’s perhaps why Longoria’s film often falls into the expected tropes of the inspiring biopic (factory floor-set inspirational speeches, the lights buzzing off in the family home when money gets tight) and leans on a series of mostly misbegotten fantasy sequences to fluff up the proceedings. The stuff that is good about “Flamin’ Hot,” including star Jesse Garcia, dedication to uplifting the Mexican-American community, and compulsively watchable sequences of junk food being made ( seriously ) is very good indeed. Longoria has the eye and heart for crowd-pleasing movie-making.

flamin hot movie review

When Judy gets pregnant, Richard knows he has to step up. But it’s not that easy — a fact of life that Longoria’s film embraces — and with a criminal record and no high school diploma, finding a good job is its own occupation. Eventually, Richard lands at Frito-Lay as a janitor and he vows to excel. That he does, for nearly a decade. (Another fact-check pause: “Flamin’ Hot” makes a major subplot out of Frito-Lay’s resistance to promoting Richard, the real Richard was allegedly promoted within his first year at the Rancho Cucamonga site.)

Richard wants to be the best he can be. In the world of “Flamin’ Hot,” that involves not only kicking ass as a janitor, but seeking out mentorship from whiz engineer Clarence (Dennis Haysbert). But is hard work enough? As Richard faces all sorts of roadblocks, from the racism he’s dealt with his entire life to a crumbling economy, even his bootstrap mentality doesn’t ensure success. But you know what does? Actual innovation.

That Montañez’s story ultimately led him to a place where that message could be delivered, both in a glossy film and in his career, is worth celebrating. Those underdog elements that really happened ring most true in an otherwise predictable film. Real life is messy and not always built for the movies, but when “Flamin’ Hot” leans too far into the only-in-Hollywood, we lose something far more satisfying than the spice-dusted cheese puffs.

“Flamin’ Hot” premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival. It will start streaming on Hulu on Friday, June 9.

Screen Rant

Flamin' hot review: eva longoria delivers a charming, heartwarming biopic [sxsw].

Anchored by a fabulous cast, Longoria spins an inspirational tale that is full of heart and humor & takes a couple of risks in her directorial debut.

Flamin’ Hot is based on the life of Richard Montañez, who claims he came up with the idea for Flamin’ Hot Cheetos — the film asserts he did this by infusing the very spices and ingredients he grew up eating as a Mexican American (Frito-Lay denies this claim ). Directed by Eva Longoria from a screenplay by Linda Yvette Chávez and Lewis Colick, Flamin’ Hot isn’t the best biopic, but it is a delightfully charming one that leans into its big heart, and relishes in certain exaggerations. Anchored by a fabulous cast, Longoria spins an inspirational tale that is full of heart and humor, and takes a couple of risks in her directorial debut that elevate Flamin’ Hot’s general appeal.

Richard Montañez (Jesse Garcia) is a janitor with Frito-Lay where he learns much more than what his job allows, including how to service the machines that make the Cheetos. But after years and economic hardships that threaten to shut down the factory, Richard, with the help of his wife Judy (Annie Gonzalez), comes up with the idea for Flamin’ Hot Cheetos . His biggest obstacle, however, is having the company take his idea, and him, seriously enough to effect change that would benefit not only Montañez, but his family and coworkers.

The film is funny, which is rare for a biopic. The screenwriters allow space for the film to breathe, to have a spark of life instead of being consistently dark or dramatic. That isn’t to say that Flamin’ Hot doesn’t deal with some darker elements of Montañez’s past, but that it isn’t hyper focused on them either. That’s for the best in a film that wears its heart on its sleeve, where the message is to never give up and always believe in oneself regardless of the people — in this case Montañez’s physically abusive father who turned to God later in life — that try to say it isn’t worth it and to hold back from one’s flourishing ideas.

Flamin’ Hot is meant as a feel-good comedy that highlights perseverance. As such, it holds back on exploring Montañez any deeper than it has to. It feels as though he is the poster child for the American Dream, which leaves his personal story aside from the Flamin’ Hot Cheetos on the backburner and streamlines most of his life. That said, not all biopics have to start from scratch or detail every aspect of its subject’s life. Flamin’ Hot knows exactly the kind of story it’s trying to tell — an inspirational one, an underdog narrative that is as heartwarming as it is humorous despite Montañez’s hardships.

The film may be predictable at times, but it has a lot of charisma and buoyant energy that keeps it afloat. Jesse Garcia’s narration is breezy and fun, bringing the audience into Montañez’s life with a few story flourishes that make Flamin’ Hot a pure delight. In particular, scenes where Garcia’s narration is utilized to uplift what would have been an otherwise dull, stagnant conversation between Frito-Lay executives is where the film’s creativity truly shines. They turn something that might have been relatively dry in another biopic into comedy gold. It’s that sense of charm and humor that permeates through the film, giving it a storytelling boost.

Garcia imbues Montañez with a sense of ambition, but also a great love for his family and community. It’s apparent in every scene. Garcia and Gonzalez are excellent together, and though the latter doesn’t get as much as Garcia to work with, her tenacity shines through. Gonzalez is a powerhouse and she and Garcia are the core of Flamin’ Hot , their relationship a benefit to the story. Tony Shalhoub is consistently solid throughout as the head of Frito-Lay, and Dennis Haysbert lends a quiet strength to the film, though it’s Brice Gonzalez, as Richard and Judy’s young son, who is a scene stealer.

Flamin’ Hot is engaging from start to finish. Audiences will want to root for Montañez at every turn. This isn’t a man who is only concerned with himself and his dreams — Montañez gives back to those who supported him, who loved him and carried him through life and hard times. He is a family man first and foremost, and Flamin’ Hot makes sure that his family isn’t forgotten. The message here is that no one is capable of doing anything on their own, not without the help of friends, family, and community; it’s why Montañez wanting to get ahead is so meaningful — he’s not doing it for himself, but to uplift those around him as well.

Flamin’ Hot is not only entertaining, but feels like a warm hug. It’s sentimental enough, but doesn’t overstay its welcome. Longoria has ultimately crafted a sweet, funny, and bright movie that will surely have viewers looking up Montañez on Google after the film ends. Even if it doesn’t explore more of Montañez’s life and interiority, Flamin’ Hot is the kind of film that will warm the heart and make one laugh out loud. That, in and of itself, is a bold move in a genre that has leaned heavily on drama and trauma to deliver.

Positive Messages

Family sticks together and stands up for each other. Do your best, no matter what job you have. Treat people equally. Your heritage is something to be proud of, even if it makes you different from others. Life is about choices. Sometimes you have to take what you want. Institutional racism impacts generations. The film depicts a cycle of poverty that is hard to escape, showing how enticing criminal life can be for people with little capital and few opportunities.

Positive Role Models

Montañez and others in his community are stuck in a cycle of poverty, unable to find steady jobs or make ends meet. Some sell drugs to make money. When Montañez's wife, Judy, gets pregnant, he wants to get out of crime. He just needs an opportunity, and when he gets one, he makes the most of it, demonstrating perseverance. He is clever, charming, and motivated. An engineer supports his ideas at work. At home, Judy stands by him through thick and thin. Bosses and authority figures are largely portrayed as racist, oppressing or abusing Latino and Black people in this era. An Italian American CEO gives Montañez an opportunity.

Diverse Representations

The main character is Mexican American. He is the subject of racism, bullying at school (he's called a "beaner"), and abuse and mistreatment by police in the 1960s and 1970s. "When the world treats you like a criminal, you become one," he says to preface his involvement in a gang, dealing drugs, and stealing a car. He says he has a "PhD" because he's "poor, hungry, and determined." He and his wife are insulted by a White woman when they apply for federal food assistance, and his son is beat up and yelled at by White people. He recalls Black and brown kids being treated differently by teachers at school when he was younger, and this motivates him as an adult to reach for what he wants. He tells his son that their heritage is a "superpower." Another character is overlooked for promotions because he's Black, despite being the best at his job. White people are generally depicted as racist or ignorant bullies, intent on holding onto their privilege.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Flamin' Hot is a biopic directed by Eva Longoria about Richard Montañez ( Jesse Garcia ), the man who says he created the spicy line of Frito-Lay snacks to celebrate his Mexican heritage and reach his community. Richard's experiences with poverty, abuse (by an alcoholic father), and systemic racism are shown; ultimately, none of them prevent him from becoming a legendary marketing executive and representative of his community. Along the way, he stumbles into crime -- selling drugs with gangs, stealing a car -- and starts a family with his longtime girlfriend. Scenes of racism and bullying could be emotional for some viewers. The main characters are treated terribly by White characters, and archive footage shows police abuse. There's kissing, and someone says a person could "sell condoms to a nun." Language includes "s--t," "ass," "damn," "hell," "pr--k," "wetback," "beaner," and untranslated Spanish slang and insults. What's the story.

As a child, Richard Montañez ( Jesse Garcia ) played in the California orchards where his extended family worked as pickers when FLAMIN' HOT opens. "My playground was everyone else's labor camp," he recalls in a voiceover, as he begins to narrate the story of his rise to the executive suite. Montañez is mistreated by a racist society, joins then leaves a gang, starts a family with his wife Judy ( Annie Gonzalez ), but still can't land a steady job without his high school diploma. Finally, he's given an opportunity as a janitor at a Frito-Lay factory. Eager to learn, he starts pestering engineer Clarence ( Dennis Haysbert ) to show him the ropes. Inspired by his own community's heritage and penchant for spicy foods, Richard comes up with the idea of catering some snack products to the Latino market. He dares to make a direct call to the company's CEO, Roger Enrico ( Tony Shalhoub ). And that's when his real climb begins.

Is It Any Good?

This empowering biopic is driven by a brisk pace and a charismatic performance from star Garcia. That said, the film's insistence on idealizing its subject could leave some viewers unsatisfied. Flamin' Hot is predictable but entertaining in its rags-to-riches tale featuring a Latino lead with a big heart, big ideas, and little cultural or financial capital. There's some creative visual storytelling, like putting dates on packages and chips on the factory floor to show time passing, or having Garcia amusingly narrate executives' C-suite meetings using street slang as he imagines them bullying one another. Music, editing, and Garcia's spirited performance infuse the film with energy.

Garcia is the heart of this movie. He narrates the tale, splashing his monologues and dialogues with Spanish expressions and terms. He's charismatic in the role, as is the real Montañez, by all accounts. That resourcefulness and relentless charm are part of his legend, although the facts around Montañez's version of his role in Frito-Lay history have been publicly scrutinized. The film opts to gloss over this, with brief scenes mentioning the invention and use of a lab-manufactured spicy powder, and end credits continuing the celebration of the real Montañez's family, life, and career. That glossing over may or may not bother you. It doesn't make the film less entertaining in and of itself, and underestimating viewers' ability to grapple with grey areas hasn't seemed to pose a problem for much of contemporary Hollywood cinema.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

If you research Montañez and Frito-Lay's flamin' hot line, you find this film's account, based on Montañez's autobiography, is disputed. Does that matter to you or change your experience or enjoyment of this movie? Why, or why not? Where could you go for more information?

How did Montañez demonstrate perseverance ? What obstacles stood in his way?

'Flamin' Hot' tells the story behind the famous Cheetos. It's more sweet than spicy

flamin hot movie review

When it comes to snacks, spicy corn-based crunchy chips come in as a top favorite among Americans. And the chip that really kicked off the crazy is Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. Look at any high-school cafeteria, dorm party or gathering and you’re certain to see at least one bag of the unnaturally bright, neon-red snacks.

Nowadays the Flamin’ Hot flavor is everyone in Frito-Lay's products. Flamin’ Hot Doritos, Flamin’ Hot Ruffles, Flamin’ Hot ... Funyuns? Yup. Even Funyuns get the spicy treatment. And spicy Frito-Lay snacks have kicked off so many knock-offs. Anyone try Trader Joe’s imitation Takis? Delicious.

“More than a spicy sensation or a national craze, Flamin’ Hot is an attitude, one that pushes you to reject the status quo and embrace your inner edge,” a brand rep for Ruffles told Eater.com in an email.

Inner edge, eh? It feels like spicy snacks are a way of life now. Nothing edgy about it. At least not for those of us who share a border with Mexico.

But the spicy flavors weren’t always the norm. In fact, America’s classic chips were pretty tame for decades. It wasn’t really until the '90s when Frito-Lay took a chance on a janitor with a finger-licking good idea.

Crime inspired Tammy Leitner's book: Surviving trauma became its message

Richard Montañez is a man of flavor

The man behind the sensation of the Flamin’ Hot spice is Richard Montañez ( Jesse Garcia ). And that's who the story centers on in director Eva Longoria ’s “ Flamin’ Hot ” movie. It’s based on the book “A Boy, A Burrito and A Cookie: from Janitor to Executive.” He grew up on a vineyard where his family worked as laborers, picking the grapes to make wine.

The opening quarter of the film is dedicated to Richard’s backstory; how he met his future wife in elementary school; getting involved with gangs, theft and drugs; and how he turned his life around by landing a job as a janitor at the nearby Frito-Lay factory.

Richard is nothing if not determined and curious. Or, as he says, “I have a Ph.D.; poor, hungry and determined!” Despite being “just a janitor” he manages to make friends at all levels of the factory, including one of the engineers named Clarence. Turns out Richard is in “good hands” with Clarence, who’s played by Dennis Haysbert (known perhaps most widely for his Allstate insurance commercials).

When Frito-Lay experiences a sharp decline in sales, it leads to layoffs and shutdowns. The desperate times lead to invention for Richard, who with his family comes up with the “spicy good” flavor that ends up putting Frito-Lay back in the black. ( The Los Angeles Times investigated Richard's claims and determined that he did not, in fact, invent the snack.)

As is obvious by the bags of Flamin’ Hot chips in grocery stores, the story has a happy ending. Richard not only gets a raise but he rises to the top and becomes an executive. Not bad for a man who didn’t finish high school.

Annie Gonzalez stands out as Judy Montañez

Garcia as Richard feels like a good match. He gives Richard a fullness that allows the audience to understand why he got involved with gangs and drugs early in life. There weren’t many jobs for Latinos during his youth, and what jobs there were didn’t pay well. With families to feed you do what you must. And sometimes the needs-must is criminal activity. But the film doesn’t dwell on that.

Instead, it touches lightly on the Chicano Movement in the '60s and '70s. But what we do get immersed in is the vibrant Chicano culture.

Annie Gonzalez plays Richard’s wife, Judy. She is a brilliant woman and Gonzalez gives her so much vibrance. But what is truly beautiful is the strong relationship she has with Garcia’s Richard.

It’s hard to find movies with married couples that feel authentic, and harder still to find Hispanic actors playing those couples. They’re out there, but the relationship between Judy and Richard feels so lovey and rooted in reality. Judy is the ultimate superhero in this movie. She’s the one who gets Richard on track, goads him when he needs it, supports him tirelessly and is one amazing mom to their boys. The give and take in the relationship is beautiful to watch.

Are these the 100 greatest movies ever? See if you agree with this Arizona author's picks

Dear narrator: Knock it off

What keeps this movie from being top-tier is the incessant narration. Richard explains his whole life throughout the movie, and it feels like too much. At times the narration sucks the oxygen out of the performances. Instead of getting to really sink into the scenes, we hear Richard explaining it all. A little narration goes a long way.

Another aspect that is immediately noticeable but perhaps forgettable later is the music. There are some good choices here and there. But like the narration, there’s only so much Mexicano-Latin-Mariachi dance music one can take. And it doesn’t fit with every scene. We get it, this is a movie about a Mexican American. No need to crank up the Mexican gangster rap at every opportunity.

The film's lightness also feels like it does the story some injustice. Searchlight Pictures produced this film, and savvy moviegoers will know that Searchlight is now a branch of Disney. Ergo, Richard's story feels "Disney-fied." We're not asking for something edgy here, but maybe something that feels more authentic than the sugar-coating Disney gives its products.

On the whole, “Flamin’ Hot” plays like a feel-good family flick. Nothing is too heavy, and some parts feel a bit overdone, but it’s fun for the most part.

Flamin’ Hot Review

Flamin' Hot

Hollywood’s bizarre current obsession with corporate origin stories continues with  Flamin’ Hot , a brand-biopic that delves deep into the founding of a flavour of Cheetos — not Cheetos themselves, you understand, just one particular spicy spin-off flavour. It is a testament, then, to Eva Longoria’s directorial debut that the film largely overcomes not only a corn-chip-thin premise, but one that apparently isn’t even entirely true. (A report in the LA Times from 2021 suggests that this ‘based on a true story’ is anything but.)

Flamin' Hot

Against considerable odds, there is a charm and warmth to this shaggy-dog story that just about justifies its existence. An overbearing voiceover gives us the “Yeah that’s me! I guess you’re wondering how I got here”-style setup: Richard Montañez (Jesse Garcia) grows up on a migrant camp in California, working for pennies; becomes a “burrito hustler” in elementary school; gets briefly drawn into a life of crime, at a time when Latinos were unjustly targeted by the LAPD; and eventually finds a job at a Frito-Lay food factory as a giddily enthusiastic janitor. Soon he has a eureka moment, as all these films must: what if he added the flavours of his heritage to the mass market products he toils over every day?

The central message of the film — that anybody can be a “somebody” — holds fast.

It’s a familiar cinematic snack: the rags-to-riches bildungsroman, the immigrant done good. What makes it disarmingly watchable are the goofy, lovable, charismatic performances from Garcia and Annie Gonzalez (as Judy, his loyal wife); and the lively, stylish direction from Longoria (directing her first feature, having previously helmed a few television episodes). The filmmaker throws everything at the screen, sometimes even to a fault: there are whip pans, speed ramps, fantasy flourishes and more besides. At times it can be overkill — spelling out the current year in Cheetos is a bit much — but it stays defiantly fun and punchy throughout. Richard’s first entrance to the vast Frito-Lay factory is filmed like Henry Hill’s entrance to the Copacabana in  Goodfellas ; at one point, a character even utters the line: “It’s about  respect “.

The wobbly relationship the narrative has with actual history certainly takes some of the shine off, but the central message of the film — that anybody can be a “somebody” — holds fast. Though accounts seem to vary, what is not in dispute is that Richard Montañez did rise the Frito-Lay ranks, from janitor to marketing executive, and in Longoria’s energetic hands, it’s hard not to be beguiled by the legend being printed here.

Flamin' Hot Review: A Fun Cheetos Movie Cheats

Flamin' Hot is an entertaining and uplifting biographical comedy about the spicy Cheetos creator. Or is it?

Capitalism is like a Cheeto — highly processed, dependent upon a great amount of low-paying labor, tasty but without nourishment, leaving a Lady Macbeth-like residue upon the fingers of each snacking participant. It's that interesting excess, the stain of its lingering remains, that's perhaps most interesting about the metaphor. Something is left over after each transaction, a fine dust of profit and discomfort. It's a bit of reality after indulging in the fantasy; the food particules seem to ask, 'Where did these Cheetos come from? How much gas was burned to deliver them to your mouth? Who profited off of them? Who actually made them, how much were they paid for their labor, and how are they doing?'

Or just wash your hands of it all and forget. Take a peek inside the bag before the next bite with Flamin' Hot , a vibrant new movie meant to inspire and uplift. The film joins recent titles like Air, Tetris , and Blackberry (not to mention House of Gucci, Ford v. Ferrari, and others), all of which offer unusual biopics of products and brands, be they shoes, games, or phones. Of course, it's Flamin' Hot Cheetos in this new film, the first feature directed by Eva Longoria .

Longoria and a great cast help Flamin' Hot stand out from the rest of the pack (or package, in this case) by focusing less on products and more on people. This is a whimsical biopic of Richard Montañez and his wife Judy, meant to be a celebration of their Mexican culture and working class values, and not a cheesy, feature-length bite of Frito-Lay product placement.

However, there's almost something even more ambivalent about the film as a result, but we'll get to that. For most people, Flamin' Hot will be a delightful snack — feel-good fun with a little cheese and not much nutrition, but enjoyable nonetheless. This marks the end of our gastronomic puns, so let's get to the main course (woops).

A Colorful and Comfortable Underdog Story

Flamin' Hot has an almost immediately comforting vibe, in the sense that everything is familiar but done very well, and every character is charming enough to warrant your attention. There are all the familiar, cheesy tropes (a voiceover in hindsight, little POV fantasy sequences, the struggle and the strife followed by inevitable success), but Longoria's direction is colorful and efficient. She gets to the point, traversing years of time in playful ways that never feel disorienting. The whole film feels fun and swift, but also grounded in Jesse's emotional headspace.

Richard Montañez grew up without much in life besides a good mother. Ostracized at school, he learned to survive in creative, profitable ways, as if he was born a little entrepreneur straight from birth. He knew how to hustle, moving from burrito capitalism (selling his mom's wonderful cooking to white kids whose minds were blown by the flavors) to theft and gang life, epitomizing the school-to-prison pipeline developed by systemic injustice (and capitalism, but hold on, we're getting there).

Jesse Garcia Shines Among a Great Cast

Eventually, Montañez wanted to get respectable and be a citizen. He started a family with lovely wife, Judy (a lovely but underused Annie Gonzalez) and began a job as a custodian at the Frito-Lay plant. He has a contagious curiosity and interest in the workings of the plant and the people who are there, and Jesse Garcia's performance is award-worthy. He's genuine and sweet in an unsentimental way, with a puppy dog energy and working class resilience. Garcia is impossible to resist, and makes Richard perpetually worth rooting for.

Once at the Frito-Lay factory, Montañez meets and slowly befriends Clarence (the great Dennis Haysbert), an intimidating but ultimately kind man and brilliant engineer. While Montañez is Mexican-American and Clarence is African-American, they both exist in that dash, where so much of society relegates people (especially in the '80s and '90s when the film is mostly set). They bond and help each other grow when none of the upper management will promote them or listen to their ideas.

Judy helps Richard grow, too. Together, they come up with the recipe for the Flamin' Hot Cheeto, and Richard navigates around the system in order to grab the attention of PepsiCo's chief executive, Roger Enrico (Tony Shalhoub). Interestingly, Enrico later became DreamWorks' Animation Chairman — at the top, most things look the same.

Is Flamin' Hot Based on a True Story?

Rounding out the cast are comedy legend Matt Walsh (no, not that Matt Walsh ) and an excellent cast of Mexican-American actors, including Emilio Rivera, Pepe Serna, Bobby Soto, and Jimmy Gonzalez. Everyone does well in Flamin' Hot , though it's undoubtedly Garcia's show, because the film is essentially filtered through his perspective. For instance, while Flamin' Hot may be touted as a true story by some, and Montañez has certainly told the story the way it's presented in this film, there is some reporting that contradicts the factuality of the movie.

Make no mistake, Montañez really did start as a custodian at Frito-Lay and worked is way up to a top executive position, having stayed with the company for more than four decades, but it's highly doubtful he actually invented Flamin' Hot Cheetos. This was originally reported by The L.A. Times two years ago; as journalist Sam Dean wrote, "Montañez made it, from rags to riches, from factory floor to corporate suite. He just didn’t make Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.” Far from Richard's community in California, it was apparently a junior employee named Lynne Greenfeld in Plano, Texas who developed the product. Vanity Fair followed up recently in an article titled, " Flamin' Hot Scam: Did the Flamin' Hot Cheetos Creator Sell a Lie?"

Honestly, for most people, this will likely be an unimportant tidbit, as they'll take inspiration however they can get it. Groundhog Day isn't based on a true story, yet it still inspires change and can make someone want to be a better person. In fact, it's the idea that Flamin' Hot is literally a POV piece, with history subjectivized through Montañez's exaggerated memory, that makes the film more fascinating.

From the Perspective of Fantasy Capitalism

"This is 1,000% the truth of Richard Montañez, and he was very involved," explained Eva Longoria to MovieWeb . "The minute I sat with him, I was like, I want the movie to be in his POV. It's got to be from his POV. I want to be in his mind [...] And that's probably what makes the movie most entertaining is we are in Richard's head 100% of the time." While the math doesn't add up, it's clear that this is not meant to be a wholly accurate depiction of capitalism, but a cinematic, easily digestible portion of it. And that's the really interesting thing — the film reveals that, in order to tell an inspirational story under capitalism , you have to present a hidden fiction.

As mentioned, Flamin' Hot is a biographical comedy about an individual and his family and community, and the actual product and corporation are more like the setting in which the story's told. The other 'product films' may dramatize slightly, but they're basically based on true stories. Here, the product has to be a supporting character, the narrative has to be tacitly fictitious, and the story has to celebrate family and immigrant culture in order for the film to successfully promote the fundamental lie of our economy — You can make it! Even if the odds are against you, the government doesn't care, and society rejects you as an 'alien' other, an 'illegal,' you can still make it! Just work hard, you'll get there!

Of course, we know this to be false. "The top 10% of households own 76% of all wealth in the U.S., while the bottom 50% of households own just 1% of all wealth," according to the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finance (as reported by Finance Buzz ). The myth of meritocracy convinces the working class that if they study and work hard enough, they can succeed and join that 10% of elites.

The Spicy Meaning of Flamin' Hot

In actuality, arbitrary happenstance is the only friend of the working class, because the main cause of economic success is simply predetermined (your family's bank accounts and what property they own, where you are born, and so on). Flamin' Hot flirts with union solidarity, the power of the people, and class consciousness , mainly in Richard and Clarence's friendship, but only barely. While the movie may appeal to liberals with its story of working class Mexican-Americans rising above racism and heading to the top of corporate America, the fantasy of Flamin' Hot is ultimately conservative — traditional family, meritocracy, a kind CEO who recognizes hard work, a happy ending.

Thus, there are two readings of Flamin' Hot , both involving a bit of cinematic subterfuge. You can wash the Cheeto dust off your fingers. Most people will accept the fantasy and see this as a colorful, fun, uplifting movie about an underdog's success, and as a result, they will be sold the lie of capitalism, and they will associate corporations with happy working families, all Citizens United.

Some viewers, however, may choose to study the orange junk food particles coating their fingers and open their eyes to something else. Some people may see through the fantasy and recognize the altered artifice of the film and its spicier interpretation — to be inspired and uplifted by our economic system is to be delusional, to live in a hyperbolic fantasy of someone else's design. In reality, the pursuit of happiness and fulfillment does not coincide with capital, and to feel good in this world, you have to believe in flaming hot fiction. At least until the revolution, or the collapse. In the meantime, we can choose how to interpret the world, and decide what to do with our own stained hands.

From Searchlight Pictures, Flamin' Hot is now available to stream on Hulu and Disney+ .

LGBT+ Drama ‘Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe’ Sets STARZ Streaming Release For March 2024

Eva longoria signs a lease at the arconia as she joins the cast of ‘only murders in the building’, ‘desperate housewives’ writer says she experienced “overt racism” for the first time working for “impossible to please” creator marc cherry, ‘flamin’ hot’ is a new kind of faith-based movie, one in which the god being worshipped is a ceo.

The BOATS ( Based On A True Story , if you’re not hip to the lingo) movie genre gets a mite dicey with Flamin’ Hot (now on Hulu and Disney+ ), a sort-of biopic based on disputed facts that might get in the way of the questionable stuff of a good story. Not that anyone should ever consider a movie made with actors and a script and editing and fake lighting and visual effects and all the other stuff of Hollywood as hard, pipe-hittin’ truth, mind you, BOATS movie or otherwise, and I’ll die on that hill. Eva Longoria directs her first feature film, adapting the autobiography of Richard Montanez, the former PepsiCo exec who claims to have invented Flamin’ Hot Cheetos while he was working as a janitor at a Frito-Lay plant – a claim that’s been disputed by the snack-food giant, which says his story isn’t quite 100 percent true. Those proceedings complicate the backstory of this movie somewhat, which plowed ahead with Montanez’s story anyway, rendering it a feelgood zero-to-hero saga that’ll make you feel warm inside, like you just ate a few handfuls of, well, you know.

FLAMIN’ HOT : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

The Gist: Meet Richard (Jesse Garcia). He’s Mexican, and grew up in Southern California, the son of a hardass working-class dad who toiled in a labor camp and spared the rod. Richard won over the kids at school who bullied him and threw around racial slurs by selling them his mom’s homemade burritos for a quarter a pop. “Man, Taco Bell didn’t introduce the world to burritos – me and my mom did,” Richard says via voiceover, with typical jokey embellishment. He befriended the other Mexican kid at school, a girl named Judy (Annie Gonzalez), who’d become his wife and the mother of his children and stick with him through thick and thin. And it was thin for a long time. Richard never finished school, and was always in trouble for dealing drugs and gangbanging. A judge let him off with a stern lecture and he straightened up, but struggled to feed his family. He hustled and hustled and hustled for a legit job, but prospective employers saw his criminal record and his lack of a diploma, and possibly/probably also his brown skin, and turned him away.

But Richard got a break. A friend at the Frito-Lay factory was his in. During his interview, he says, “I got a Ph. D. – I’m poor, hungry and determined sir.” And his manager (Matt Walsh) replies, “That’s just stupid,” but hires him anyway, to mop and sweep the factory floor and clean up all the machines. The thing that sets Richard apart from so many of us? He’s thrilled to do this thankless job. And he drives his coworkers crazy with his peppy enthusiasm: Hey, shouldn’t he be miserable, scrubbing crud off equipment? Why is he asking so many questions? Why is he so interested in how the plant churns out oodles and oodles of chips and doodles? Why is longtime engineer Clarence (Dennis Haysbert) taking the guy under his wing and showing him the ropes? Answers: Richard won’t be denied. His passion is charming if you’re not a cynical jerk. He’s just making the best of it. He also doesn’t want to be a janitor for the rest of his life. Even though that’s exactly where he’s stuck for the next decade or so, as he doesn’t climb the ladder at the plant, which struggles under the weight of 1980s economic trickle-down philosophies that leave almost nothing at the bottom for folks like Richard and Judy and their family, who struggle to afford things like Cheetos. He’s named employee of the month, and they’re applying for food stamps and being denied. Frickin’ Reagan.

Flamin' Hot movie true story

‘Flamin’ Hot’ True Story: Did Richard Montañez Really Invent Flamin’ Hot Cheetos?

Finally, it’s 1992. Richard is hanging on despite layoffs, and he’s still uptempo. A company guy. The only employee who actually pays attention to a state-of-the-union corporate video starring PepsiCo/Frito-Lay president Roger Enrico (Tony Shalhoub). One day, Richard’s son comes home from school with a shiner – another incident with bullies beating on the Mexican kid. He takes his boys out for spicy Mexican elote corn and gets inspired: Their people don’t want boring-ass cool ranch Doritos. They want something with flavor . With zing . And corporate suits are totally overlooking the growing Latino market. So he and Judy hit the kitchen to concoct their own spicy Cheeto dust, and somehow, through the grace of God or capitalism (if they aren’t one and the same), he lands an opportunity to pitches this hot new flavor to Mr. Enrico. And wouldn’t you know it – well, maybe his pitch will become the now-billion-dollar entity known as Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, maybe it won’t. NO SPOILERS from me, bucko.

What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: The year 2023 saw the formation of a new movie genre: the Birth of a Brand Bio (or BoBB, if you’re into the whole brevity thing). There’s the one about the basketball shoes ( AIR ), and the one about the phone with the keyboard ( Blackberry ), and the one about the Russian video game ( Tetris ), and now this one, about gross but also weirdly delicious junk food.

Performance Worth Watching: Garcia is fully committed to the anchor role here, and his buoyant tone goes a long way towards rendering this movie an enjoyable, fast-paced watch.

Memorable Dialogue: Clarence points out how the burned chips are snatched off the line and trashed, to which Richard replies, “Dang. People always trying to throw the brown ones away.”

Sex and Skin: None.

Our Take: As goes the protagonist, so goes this movie. Flamin’ Hot works a little too hard to be an ebullient crowdpleaser, but it’ll win you over with its relentless, upbeat energy. Longoria unleashes spirited montages and nurtures emotional family moments and, please forgive me, spices up weary biopic tropes just enough to make us feel slightly more than marginally invested in the story. We’re firmly situated in the underdog Richard’s corner as he, apologies in advance, ruffles feathers and forges his own destiny. And again, if you’re obsessing over the T parts of this – or any, really – BOATS movie, you’re wasting your time. Even though this story is about a real brand and a real man, both are absolutely privy to the machinations of artistic license, and this movie plays out like a story concocted by a fictional version of Richard Montanez who’s a bit of a bullshit artist.

Longoria and the cast foment enough goodwill to make us momentarily forget that the movie is manipulating our emotions in a quest for inspiration; that it’s sometimes simplistic in the way it addresses racial prejudice; that it’s another movie giving equal weight, intentionally or otherwise, but still troublingly, to both product placement and storytelling. The Richard-Judy stand-by-your-man love story is a key subplot that could use a little more oomph, but is nevertheless sweet; same goes for Richard’s relationship with his father ( Sons of Anarchy vet Emilio Rivera), which gets shorter shrift. I laughed quite a bit as this movie flew by on fleet narrative feet and made, I beg your pardon, the most-ito of its 99 minutes.

Our Call: STREAM IT. Flamin’ Hot doesn’t break the mold, but it’s nevertheless, sorry sorry so sorry, sour cream and fun-ion.

Flamin’ Hot: A Spicy Tale of Innovation and Inspiration (Movie Review)

Featured image for the post, "Flamin' Hot: A Spicy Tale of Innovation and Inspiration (Movie Review)."

If you’ve ever wondered how a janitor could turn a simple snack into a global sensation, then grab a bag of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos and buckle up! “ Flamin’ Hot ” is a fiery tale of innovation, inspiration, and the power of believing in oneself. Directed by Eva Longoria, this 2023 biographical drama tells the true story of Richard Montañez, a Frito Lay janitor who disrupted the food industry and created a pop culture phenomenon.

The Flamin’ Hot Story

“Flamin’ Hot” takes us on a journey from the humble janitorial corridors of Frito Lay to the high-powered boardrooms of the snack industry. Richard Montañez, played with heart and grit by Jesse Garcia, is a janitor with a vision. He sees potential in a simple, unflavored Cheeto and, inspired by his Mexican heritage, creates a snack that sets the world on fire – the Flamin’ Hot Cheeto.

The film’s narrative is as spicy as the snack it’s named after, filled with moments of triumph, setback, and perseverance. It’s a story of an underdog who, against all odds, changes the course of snack history. The supporting cast, including Annie Gonzalez, Emilio Rivera, and Dennis Haysbert, bring depth and authenticity to this inspiring tale.

Cast & Crew

A closer look.

“Flamin’ Hot” is more than just a rags-to-riches story. It’s a testament to the power of creativity, cultural heritage, and sheer determination. The film explores themes of identity, class, and the American Dream, all through the lens of a man and his spicy snack.

Eva Longoria’s directorial approach is both empathetic and engaging, effectively capturing the struggles and triumphs of Montañez’s journey. The performances are commendable, particularly Garcia, who embodies Montañez’s spirit and determination with a captivating authenticity.

Behind the Scenes

The film’s technical aspects enhance the storytelling. The cinematography captures the stark contrast between Montañez’s humble beginnings and the glitzy world of corporate America. The sound design and editing create a dynamic and engaging viewing experience.

The soundtrack, filled with vibrant Latin music, adds a layer of cultural richness to the film. It sets the tone, complements the narrative, and contributes to the overall mood of the movie.

The Elephant in the Room

However, it’s important to address the controversy surrounding the film . Frito Lay has disputed the accuracy of Montañez’s story, claiming that the creation of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos was a corporate effort. This controversy adds a layer of complexity to the film and may affect viewers’ perception of the story.

While the film presents Montañez’s version of events, it’s essential for viewers to be aware of this dispute and form their own opinions. After all, every story has multiple sides, and “Flamin’ Hot” is no exception.

My Thoughts on Flamin’ Hot

In a world where it’s increasingly difficult for a film to truly captivate my attention, “Flamin’ Hot” managed to do just that. The story is as captivating as a bag of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos is addictive. The characters are as interesting as the snack’s fiery red color, and the narrative flow kept me engaged from start to finish – a feat that few recent films have achieved in recent years.

The film’s narrative style brought to mind echoes of “Goodfellas”, my all-time favorite movie. There’s something about the way the story unfolds, the way the characters are developed, that reminded me of the classic Scorsese film. Minus the murder and mayhem, of course. It’s not every day that a movie about a spicy snack can evoke such comparisons!

As for the controversy surrounding the film, I find myself rooting for the underdog. Perhaps it’s the romantic in me, or perhaps it’s the allure of a good David vs. Goliath story, but I’d like to believe that Richard Montañez’s tale is true. After all, who doesn’t love a good underdog story?

The performances in the film were another highlight. Jesse Garcia, who plays Richard Montañez, delivers a compelling performance, and his interactions with Clarence, played by Dennis Haysbert (yes, the All State Man), were particularly enjoyable. However, I must admit, every time Haysbert appeared on screen, I couldn’t help but think of car insurance commercials. A bit distracting, perhaps, but certainly no fault of the film – just the quirks of my brain!

My Final Verdict

Rating: 4/5 stars.

In conclusion, “Flamin’ Hot” is a spicy blend of inspiration, innovation, and controversy. It’s a film that celebrates the power of an idea and the determination to bring it to life. Despite the controversy, the movie offers an engaging and inspiring viewing experience.

Whether you’re a fan of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos or just love a good underdog story, “Flamin’ Hot” is a film worth crunching on. So grab a bag of your favorite snack, sit back, and let this fiery tale of innovation and inspiration light up your screen.

Amadeus Description

Built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard, and having undergone a total refit in 2018, S/Y Amadeus was designed to please the most demanding of yachtsmen. Built for smooth sailing, this elegant cutter rigged sloop has a sleek hull design, comfortably reaching top speeds of 12 knots and ensuring excellent sailing performance. S/Y Amadeus has just undergone this past winter (2018) a major refit such as total repaint top to bottom, new rigging (BSI Denmark), Novourania with new Evinrude 75hp outboard, Splash pool, new Bimini/Sprayhood/Awnings, new exterior fabrics and many other enhancements. In 2016 new “North Sails” were placed onboard. The yacht is maintained in excellent condition with a five-star crew year round. Her generous uncluttered teak deck offers plenty of space for sunbathing. The spacious and unique outdoor saloon has two tables seating upto 12 guests and is a perfect setting for outdoor dining and entertainment. Thanks to a special canopy and roll-up windows, the deck saloon has the added attraction that it can be fully enclosed, making it ideal for all weather conditions. Her forward area includes a splash pool and sun bathing area which can also be shaded with a removable awning. From the cockpit, a stairway leads to the light-filled spacious saloon offering ample seating, ideal for relaxing or enjoying a drink from the bar, and offers a formal dining area. This area also includes a LCD TV, entertainment center, ipod dock station, playstation, and is ideal for indoor activities. She can accommodate 10-12 guests in one full width master stateroom, two double bedded cabins each having one extra single bed and two twin bedded cabins which can be easily converted to double beds (upon request), thus, making her the only 5 double bedded sailboat in the Greek market. She also has a nice selection of toys which include water ski (adult and children), tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod and snorkeling gear.
