Watches Set sail in style: meet the new TAG Heuer Carrera Skipper

Over time, many of our watches have captured the imagination of collectors everywhere. Take the Heuer Skipper (Reference 7754) for example. Brightly colored and instantly recognizable, the Skipper made its debut in 1968. It was produced in limited quantities, never featured in the Heuer catalog and remained somewhat hidden for a long time. But thanks to its vibrant appearance and intriguing backstory, the watch quickly became a favorite among collectors. In fact it is one of the most sought-after Heuer watches out there. As part of the Carrera’s 60th anniversary celebrations , we’re bringing the beloved Skipper back in a brand new iteration. Let’s trace the journey of the legendary timepiece and how it has inspired the new TAG Heuer Carrera Skipper.

Charting the course

Our connection with the world of yachting began with an unexpected alliance. Partnering with Abercrombie and Fitch in the mid-1940s, Heuer crafted a collection of A&F-branded watches with tide indicators . Fast forward to the late 1960s and Heuer’s friendship with Abercrombie and Fitch’s president led to an incredible opportunity as the official timing partner for the America’s Cup boat ‘Intrepid.’ In 1967, Intrepid went on to dominate the event by a decisive four races to nil. To commemorate this victory, Heuer produced the Heuer Skipper in 1968.

The Skipper makes a comeback

Seamlessly blending style and practicality, the new TAG Heuer Carrera Skipper is bridging the gap between its original form and modernity. Derived from the newly-released  ‘glassbox’ Carrera ,  the watch embraces a bezel-less case, where the glass gracefully extends to the edges, creating a sleek and modern aesthetic. Its colors are reminiscent of the 1968 Heuer Skipper. Each color on the original had a practical or symbolic purpose. Vivid orange alerted the crew of the last 5 minutes before a race started. Green represented the hue of the boat’s rigging and light teal replicated the color of Intrepid’s deck.

The new TAG Heuer Carrera Skipper revisits this iconic palette. The main dial is a signature blue that’s inspired by the sea. The 12-hour counter comes in Intrepid Teal while the 15-minute regatta counter is broken into three segments: Intrepid teal, Lagoon Green and Regatta Orange. Combined with the triangular shaped markers positioned at 5-minute intervals around the outer curved flange and the bright orange central seconds hand, the TAG Heuer Carrera Skipper combines modern technology with timeless design. The Skipper is back with a bang. And it breathes new life into the relationship between TAG Heuer and the world of yachting.

The day we were booked was a very windy day and cruise was cancelled. We were offered a full refund or to be booked on the following day. We opted to be rebooked and so glad we did. From the very beginning when we were collected from close to our hotel it was wonderful. The driver was such a lovely man. Friendly and informative about the local area as we drove to the port. The boat crew were also friendly and welcoming. The boat was well maintained and clean. The food was delicious and plentiful. The scenery stunning!! So pleased we did this trip. It did not disappoint at all. Read more Written March 18, 2024

It is very exhausting. The total experience should only last for about 3 hrs but it becomes so exhausting after a while that everyone just sleeps with the cold winds hitting right in their face. The weather was good—in the 60s Fahrenheit for us (on December 12th), and the water was a little choppy at first but then smoothed out. The crew was fantastic. They were all so friendly and fixed us a delicious meal. They made sure some of it was gluten free for me and my partner. To be clear, you don’t get to go off the boat at all, but they do stop for a while at the Hot Springs in the middle of the caldera. There was an option to swim, but we didn’t bring anything so we didn’t. It was nice to be able to see the different parts of the island. The cruise went for five full hours, and we got picked up from a meeting point in Oia and dropped off at the harbor at the southern part of the island. Oh, and the sunset we saw was beautiful! Overall, great experience! Read more Written December 24, 2023

The trip should have been canceled and refunded. Everyone onboard got seasick and the captain was anything but friendly. We barely had a chance to snorkel and my some was stung by a jellyfish. The captain told us there are NO jellyfish there! Really, no jellyfish in the mediterranean? They might blame a bad cruise on the weather but it’s no excuse, cancel and refund the trip and don’t waist everyone’s day. Read more Written December 9, 2023

The Skipper Elias was superb, so knowledgeable and made our afternoon / evening so very enjoyable, explaining all the sites as we cruised along the coast line, stopping for swimming and a wonderful BBQ meal prepared by Nerfeli aided by Telis with drinks throughout our trip. The food was plentiful, local specialities and such good quality. The actual yacht was brilliant, especially for just the 4 of us, we were given our own cabin to change and this had toilet facilities and spotlessly clean throughout. Elias said to us at the beginning it was not crew and guests we were all one group and it was definitely that. When it came to the sunset we were afforded the best possible view and we took some wonderful photos. I have sailed quite a bit myself in my younger years but this day was just perfection, from the pick up to the return trip to our hotel, we all commented that none of us had experienced such a wonderful day. Certainly a day to remember and I would highly recommend this company to others, Read more Written October 24, 2023

The views that you get from inside the caldera are just as spectacular as looking into the caldera from the rim. Caldera Yachting took us on a few swimming stops, one of which was in the warmer waters of the caldera fed by hot springs. Each swimming stops was 20-30 minutes. Afterwards was a plentiful lunch with a variety of traditional Greek foods such as a rice pilaf, Greek salad, bread, hummus and more. The staff was friendly and courteous. The captain of our vessel was a good sailor and his crew that interfaced with us were knowledgeable about the geologic history of the caldera. It was an awesome experience for both of us. That Kirk Freeport is bang in between the two small terminals where the cruise tenders dock on the Grand Cayman strip. From memory there is a huge Guy Harvey billboard either just behind or on the roof? On a good (bad?) day you can have around seven cruise ships anchored in the bay and the main strip is literally heaving with Hawaiian-shirted tourists, loaded up on cocktails and desperate to blow some duty free cash. Pile 'em high and sell 'em cheap. The boutique will have armfuls of these mass produced babies and they will fly. I would imagine they'd sell at least five of these for every potential Aquaracer sale.

If that white version was just a bit larger it’d make an elegant men’s option, IMHO. And they should be Aquaracers.

Back in June, we went out to San Francisco for a glimpse inside preparations for the 34th America’s Cup from the perspective of challenger Emirates Team New Zealand and its timekeeping partner, OMEGA . We were out in the city by the bay again recently, this time as a guest of TAG Heuer, a sponsor of the reigning America’s Cup Defender, Team Oracle USA. Finally, the focus was on the sailing — and it was an exhilarating time to be on the water.

The new breed of AC72 boats are nothing short of technological marvels, unmistakable with their resplendent 130-foot carbon fiber wing sails, lifted clear of the water by sleek catamaran hulls with foils in order to rip through the water at speeds up to 45 miles per hour. The crew members wear crash helmets and protective suits and carry emergency air canisters and knives in case things go topsy-turvy in a hurry.

tag-heuer-aquaracer-72-team-usa-oracle-gear-patrol-ambiance

TAG Heuer went beyond the usual logo placement and special edition regatta watches by producing special digital wrist-top computers that all of the Team Oracle USA sailors wore on their wrists. These provide real-time, wi-fi-delivered data to help the sailors communicate and react quickly during the races. The watch was developed in cooperation with crew member Gilberto Nobili, who, aside from being a burly grinder on the crew, is a Java programmer. Talk about brains and brawn. Nobili gave us a peek at the so-called “Aquaracer 72”, but don’t expect to see this one at your local TAG Heuer retailer anytime soon.

TAG’s optical division worked on eyewear for the crew, fitting them with special glare-cutting wraparounds that are hydrophobic for shedding saltwater spray and feature polarized lenses with a central strip that remains non-polarized for reading LCD screens on wrist-worn PDAs and the Aquaracer 72. Rumor had it that skipper Jimmy Spithill had a heads-up display in his glasses for hands-free viewing of telemetry data while rounding buoys at 40 knots. Take that, Google Glass.

Crew members wear crash helmets and protective suits and carry emergency air canisters and knives in case things go topsy-turvy in a hurry.

Noshing on canapés aboard the climate-controlled spectator boat, we journalists had front row seats for all the raw action on the race course, which criss-crossed the bay from the Golden Gate Bridge past Alcatraz and finished at the race village on the Embarcadero. A few thousand day sailors bobbed alongside us in a chaotic scrum for the best views while billionaires Larry Page (of Google fame) and Team Oracle owner Larry Ellison joined us in their respective superyachts, both of which were replete with helicopters, launches and onboard ATVs.

Saturday’s races were both handily won by Emirates Team New Zealand, but on Sunday the defending American team came back to claim one of the two races after some smart tactical moves by Spithill and a drag race to the finish. Racing continues Tuesday, Thursday and into the weekend in this best of nine series to see whether the Cup remains in San Francisco or heads Down Under.

Watches In The Wild The Road Through America, Episode 1: A Model Of Mass Production

If you don't follow the extremely expensive and arcane world of competitive yachting, you probably haven't heard of the America's Cup, which is the world's oldest international sporting trophy, having first been run all the way back in 1851. Coincidentally, this is just a few years after Louis Brandt founded La Generale Watch Co. which would go on to produce the first Omega watches, which were so successful that the Omega line eventually became its own brand in 1903. Believe it or not, Switzerland, which is about as landlocked a country as you can get, has nonetheless a very strong sailing tradition thanks to its enormous glacial lakes – in the summer months, Lake Geneva and Lake Neuchâtel are swarming with sailboats – and also has its own yachting team. Alinghi is a newcomer, especially compared to the longevity of the America's Cup. The team, founded in 1994, represents the Swiss yacht club Société Nautique de Genève, and surprised a very strong field of competitors in 2003 when it succeeded in defeating New Zealand and taking home the Cup.

tag heuer catamaran

The team is the brainchild of Swiss entrepreneur Ernesto Bertarelli, and while it ultimately did not retain the Cup, which it gave up to the Golden Gate Yacht Club in 2010 after a successful defense in 2007, it has continued to participate very competitively in other international racing events, sailing the extremely fast and often very dangerous catamaran-hull hydrofoil racing yachts, which are capable going faster than the actual wind speed, and which can hit top speeds of 50 knots. The basic physics are straightforward – catamarans in general and hydrofoils in particular have far less wetted surface than monohull yachts as well as less mass, and with such dramatic reductions in weight and drag, they go like rockets. They are the F1 cars of yachting and, while measures have been taken in recent years to make them less hazardous to sail, they remain, like F1 cars, inherently dangerous, very high-tech, and extremely expensive.

tag heuer catamaran

As you might expect from a Swiss yacht club's international racing team, Alinghi has partnered with watch brands from the very beginning, starting with Audemars Piguet in 2003, and the Royal Oak Offshore Alinghis were large, regatta-timer chronographs which came in a wide variety of cases and designs, including the AP RO Team Alinghi Forged Carbon, which I believe was the first forged-carbon cased watch from anyone. Currently, Alinghi partners with Omega (the collaboration was announced in May of 2019), and the two have just announced a new watch – a new version of the Speedmaster Dark Side Of The Moon, which features design cues intended to reflect the high-tech world of modern competitive yachting, and which also has a little surprise under the hood.

tag heuer catamaran

Cosmetically, this is pretty much squarely in the mainstream of Dark Side Of The Moon design, with the signature ceramic bezel and 44.5mm case, along with a tachymeter scale calibrated in miles per hour. Although the watch is not specifically a countdown regatta timer, the minutes totalizer has been customized with a highlighted five-minute arc. Yachting enthusiasts, as well as regatta timer fans, will know that this is because the countdown before a race actually begins is critical; as the wind is blowing and the yachts are constantly in motion, it is impossible for them to wait in a stationary fashion at a starting line. Instead, a starting line is marked by an imaginary line drawn between two buoys, and the committee boat, which regulates the start, makes a signal (traditionally by firing a gun) which marks the beginning of a countdown to the actual start. Once the countdown is concluded, another signal is fired and at that moment the boats are free to cross the line. As whomever crosses first is often apt to win outright, barring accident or mishandling, the five minutes before the start are the scene of frantic maneuvering and frequent close calls.

tag heuer catamaran

As I am neither a mariner nor a plutocrat, I have attended few regattas, and when I have done, it's because I was covering the race, but I find them very exciting and the boats extremely beautiful (sometimes too exciting – I happened to be a rail monkey a few years back on a gorgeous 1938 Sparkman & Stephens yawl, when another boat came close enough to our stern that you almost might have leapt from one deck to the other. Not wishing to seem chicken, I didn't say anything about it until afterwards, when I asked one of the crew if that wasn't a little close and he said, with feeling, "Yeah ... that was a little close.")

tag heuer catamaran

Certainly, the cool dark glossiness of the Dark Side Of The Moon is a good match for the construction and engineering that goes into a racing hydrofoil. One of the more interesting features of the watch from a mechanical standpoint is revealed when you take a look at the movement through the caseback.

tag heuer catamaran

The movement is not, as is often the case with the DSOTM, the automatic co-axial caliber 9300, but rather, a version of the classic Moonwatch caliber 1861 (in this case carrying the number 1865). The movement as well as the dial of the watch have been laser-etched with patterns that reflect the carbon fiber construction of Alinghi's racing hydrofoils. Now, this is not the first time that an 1861 variant has gone into a DSOTM, but in general, the high tech case and bezel (the Dark Side Of The Moon was the first ceramic Moonwatch) have been matched with an equally technically forward-looking movement. The only other DSOTM I've been able to dig up that didn't use the 9300 is the Apollo 8 Dark Side Of The Moon, from 2018 , which has an openworked version of the movement that's been given the rugged texture (on non-working surfaces, I hasten to add) of the lunar surface. You will probably have noticed by now that the hours sub-register has been replaced by the Alinghi logo, and there's a little Easter egg here as well – the logo is actually printed onto a disk, which rotates whenever the chronograph is in operation.

The use of a thinner movement also means that this is much flatter than usual for the Dark Side Of The Moon Watches, which typically come in at 44.25mm x 16.14mm. The DSOTM Alinghi is 13.80mm thick, which represents a significant height reduction (2.34mm) and should make for a much-altered wrist experience over the standard Dark Side Of The Moon watches.

tag heuer catamaran

That said, I think this is an interesting move. I also think this might be a watch that at first glance seems intended to appeal to a fairly small audience – yachting fans, obviously; folks interested in regatta timers, Swiss patriots who would be enthused about seeing Alinghi and Omega collaborating. However, if you like the Dark Side Of The Moon aesthetic but have found the case dimensions challenging, this might actually be a watch worth considering – as I've mentioned, an 1861-derived movement is a rarity in this design and it's both an interesting alternative from a design perspective, as well as something potentially of interest to Omega collectors looking for something a bit out of the ordinary run for the collection. (It is, notably, not a limited edition.) A yachting chronograph is always a bit of a niche proposition (either a little or a lot depending on the watch and the yacht), but seeing the 1865 here is a nice change of pace and offers a subtle but definite connection to the Speedmaster's origins as a timepiece for terrestrial, rather than celestial, pursuits.

The Omega Speedmaster Dark Side Of The Moon Alinghi: case, 44.25mm x 13.80mm, zirconium oxide ceramic, with ceramic bezel and Super-LumiNova tachymeter scale; box sapphire crystals front and back; water resistance, 5 bar/50 meters. Alinghi logo on start/stop pusher. Movement, Omega caliber 1865 (1861 base), hand-wound three-register chronograph with cam and lever switching system; mainplate with laser etched honeycomb design, chronograph bridge with laser etched carbon fiber design; frequency, 21,600 vph, running in 19 jewels; power reserve, 48 hours. Price, $10,800.

TAG Heuer Watches and Oracle Team USA Introduce First Smartwatch for Sailing

tag heuer catamaran

The watch, which is a product of the R&D departments of both TAG Heuer and Oracle, made its debut on the wrists of Oracle Team USA sailors at this year’s 34th America’s Cup, won by Oracle Team USA in thrilling come-from-behind fashion on September 25. It is, TAG says, the first watch designed both for and by a professional sailing team, specifically engineered to provide every crew member access to crucial race condition data in real time. Each watch was customized for a team member’s specific tasks and is wirelessly linked to the boat’s onboard computers.

Based on the TAG Heuer Aquaracer 500M Calibre 72 Countdown chronograph, the digital-chronograph smartwatch has a large 51-mm-diameter dial with high-contrast LED screen. It weighs only 108 grams and is impact-resistant to 5,000 Gs. The digital displays on the screen offer a constantly updated data stream of information on how the boat and its sails are behaving, measuring such variables as boat speed, foil balance, sail pressure, true wind speed, true wind direction and true wind angle. The watch is still recognizably a TAG Heuer invention, with the brand’s logo printed prominently on the red leather strap, which is ergonomically designed to fit over a wet suit.

It’s perhaps fitting that TAG Heuer would be the first Swiss watch brand to enter into the nascent smartwatch arena, currently populated almost solely by tech companies such as Samsung, Sony and (yet to come) Apple — though, admittedly, this device does not include many of those other devices’ smartphone-like functions, such as e-mail or music playback. The brand has a history of experimenting with different technologies and, in recent years, even branching out into other, non-wristwatch accessories.

In fact, some of the tech used in the Aquaracer 72 smartwatch comes from some of those other TAG Heuer products. The watch’s exterior use a patented “splashproof” treatment first used in TAG Heuer eyewear , the data processing equipment aboard the boat is protected from water damage by a technology first used on a TAG Heuer Monaco chronograph watch; and the dials on certain versions of the Aquaracer 72 feature a “heads-up display” with polarizing lenses based on a “photochromic” technology developed for the eyewear. The Oracle skipper used a special waterproof phone outfitted with the same technology as a TAG Heuer mobile phone , the TAG Heuer Meridiist.

The unfortunate news for smartwatch fans? You can’t buy one of these specially-made models. Only 72 were produced, none available commercially. However, TAG Heuer has announced it will be releasing a limited-edition version called the Aquaracer 500M Calibre 72 Countdown Automatic Chronograph 43 mm. (The 72 is reference to the length of Oracle Team USA’s 72-foot catamaran.) It has the official “Team USA” logo on the dial and an image of the boat engraved on the caseback. And while it doesn’t include all the digital bells and whistles of the smartwatch, it does include a regatta countdown function for sailing.

FEIG ELECTRONIC: Moscow-City Skyscrapers Streamline Parking Access and Control with Secure RFID

Feig electronic partners with isbc group to deploy ucode dna rfid security and parking access control solution in moscow business district.

Weilburg, Germany  — December 3,  2019  —  FEIG ELECTRONIC , a leading global supplier of radio frequency identification (RFID) readers and antennas with fifty years of industry experience, announces deployment of the UCODE DNA RFID security and parking contactless identification solution in the Moscow International Business Center, known as Moscow-City, one of the world’s largest business district projects.

The management of Moscow-City not only selected long-range, passive UHF RFID to implement in its controlled parking areas, it also chose to implement UCODE DNA , the highest form of secure RAIN RFID technology, developed by NXP Semiconductors.

“Underscoring NXP’s innovation and leadership in developing advanced RAIN RFID technologies, our UCODE DNA was chosen to be incorporated with the FEIG and ISBC implementation of the contactless identification system in the prestigious Moscow-City,” said Mahdi Mekic, marketing director for RAIN RFID with NXP Semiconductors. “This exciting project represents yet another successful deployment of NXP’s contactless portfolio, and showcases our continued ability to meet the high-security requirements of highly demanding applications without compromising user convenience.”

“UCODE DNA is considered the only identification technology to match the physical protection of a barrier with the cybersecurity necessary to truly protect entrances from unauthorized access,” said Manuel Haertlé, senior product manager for FEIG Electronic. “As a respected contactless payment technology company, FEIG applies security know-how from its payment terminals, which are fully certified according to the latest high-class security standards, into our RFID systems. FEIG vehicle access control RFID readers incorporate advanced secure key storage elements, supporting various methods for secure key injection.”

FEIG’s partner ISBC Group provided the knowledge and support for this successful implementation using  FEIG’s long-range UHF RFID . The resulting system enables authorized vehicle entry into areas reserved for private residential use or corporate tenants, while also allowing availability of temporary, fee-based visitor parking. Thanks to the cryptographic authentication of UCODE DNA, both the tag and reader must go through an authentication procedure before the reader will validate the data from the tag, which is transmitted wirelessly. This level of authentication is typically used in the most secure data communication networks.

“The system’s two-step authentication means that only authorized equipment can handle the secure protocol and the data exchange with the UCODE DNA based tag. Without the required cryptographic secrets, other readers would query the tag in vain, because the tag’s response cannot be interpreted or understood,” said Andrey Krasovskiy, director of the RFID department at ISBC Group. “On top of this, each data exchange in the authentication process is unique, so even if a malicious actor were to intercept the communication, the transmission is only good for a single exchange and the tag’s unique identity is protected from cloning.”

Established in 1992 and still growing, Moscow-City is the revitalization and transformation of an industrial riverfront into a new, modern, vibrant and upscale business and residential district. A mix of residential, hotel, office, retail and entertainment facilities, it is located about four kilometers west of Red Square along the Moscow River. Twelve of the twenty-three planned facilities have already been completed, with seven currently under construction. Six skyscrapers in Moscow-City reach a height of at least 300 meters, including Europe’s tallest building, Federation Tower, which rises more than 100 stories.

Partnering with ISBC and deploying FEIG Electronic RFID solutions, the Moscow International Business Center is delivering security and access control to its city center today, as it grows into the city of tomorrow.

Moscow International Business Center: The Latest Architecture and News

Moscow's high rise bohemia: the international business district with no business.

Moscow's High Rise Bohemia: The International Business District With No Business - Featured Image

The Moscow International Business Center (Also known as Moskva-City ) was meant to be Russia ’s ticket into the Western world. First conceived in 1992, the district at the edge of Moscow’s city center is intended to contain up to 300,000 inhabitants, employees and visitors at any given moment and, when completed, will house over 4 million square meters of prime retail, hotel and office space to create what the Russian government desired most from this project: an enormous financial district that could dwarf London’s Canary Wharf and challenge Manhattan . Twenty three years later though, Moscow-based real estate company Blackwood estimates that as much as 45% of this new space is entirely vacant and rents have plummeted far below the average for the rest of Moscow. The only press Moskva-City is attracting is for tenants like the High Level Hostel , a hostel catering to backpackers and other asset-poor tourists on the 43rd floor of the Imperia Tower , with prices starting at $25.50 for a bed in a six-person room. This is not the glittering world of western high finance that was envisioned back in the post-Soviet 90s; but what has it become instead?
