Tred Avon Yacht Club Wedding: Sarah & Phil

June 5, 2018.

It’s absolutely crazy that June is already here! For me, June is a good marker of when summer really “begins” and I’m so glad it began with Sarah & Phil’s Tred Avon Yacht Club wedding this weekend! The day started out with us cautiously enjoying every spare moment the weather gave us, but ended without the weather being an issue at all (other than the oppressive humidity)!

The whole day was full of laughter and legacy, a great combination. Sarah’s family was riding the high of her sister Amanda getting married weeks before, Phil’s family excited for one of their youngest to be marrying an incredible woman (also Doctor!) in Sarah. There was sand, a band, and even ice cream. My first time at Tred Avon Yacht Club and definitely an incredible one! Here are a few of my favorite photos from Sarah & Phil’s Tred Avon Yacht Club wedding!

Eastern shore wedding Tred Avon Yacht Club

I love me some summer weddings. Something about being outside, enjoying the sunshine, a little breeze, & watching two people share their day with friends & family, makes my heart full! Katie & Rob said their “I Do’s” on a beautiful summer day, near the water in Oxford, MD, at the Tred Avon Yacht Club. That place is nothing short of beautiful! It has a little bit of everything, situated in the quietest town, with the cutest little stores, & a little water & sand. While also getting to marvel at the vast boats that cruise down the river. You can’t help but want to take it all in!

By the way, this couple is pretty amazing & down to earth. Katie always has a smile on her face! This girl just radiates joy, & Rob is probably the most laid back guy I have ever met. I just knew this wedding was going to be one for the books.  Katie contacted me after I had booked her Best Friend’s wedding last year. We talked about her hopes, dreams, & wishes and planned to make their day special.  And that it was! It was full of love, FUN, & family. I am so honored that I got to share this day with them!

I hope when you look at these images, it takes you back to that day, & you can feel the wind, smell the salty water, & see the love these two have for each other!

Katharine and Dan’s Classic Eastern Shore Wedding filled with Elegance and Fun

February 6, 2023

Captured by We Are The Cashmans Submitted by Island Creek Events

Katharine and Dan have always lived intertwined lives thanks to the Eastern Shore of Maryland and the Tred Avon Yacht Club (TAYC) and we like to say we really met twice. First, Katharine was Dan’s bus girl at Latitude 38, in Oxford, MD in 2005 but at that time the age difference was real and it was just a crush. They stayed friends over the years, running into each other at various stages of life, and it was thanks to our second meeting at TAYC the summer of 2019 that led to something more. That July 4th, it was unclear what was louder – the fireworks, or the butterflies. That same spot is where they got married three years later.

There was one more test – even more nervous than their first date on Dan’s boat “Weather or Knot,” was when Albie and Bowie met for the first time. They sniffed….their tails wagged happily, and the rest is history.

Katharine greenlee, september 24, 2022.

Dan and Katharine have always lived intertwined lives thanks to the Eastern Shore of Maryland and the Tred Avon Yacht Club (TAYC), where Katharine's older brother was Dan's sailing coach. After childhood, they crossed paths many years later at the restaurant, Latitude 38, where Katharine worked through high school and college, and Dan had a summer bar tending gig (this is where her crush really started!). They stayed friends over the years, running into each other at various stages of life, and it was thanks to a run in at TAYC the summer of 2019 that led to something more. That July 4th, it was unclear what was louder - the fireworks, or the butterflies. There was one more test - even more nervous than their first date on Dan's boat "Weather or Knot," was when Albie and Bowie met for the first time. They sniffed....their tails wagged happily, and the rest is history. Dan proposed to Katharine August 2021 in East Boothbay, Maine while visiting his family cottage. Down on the dock, for their usual sunset cocktails with the doggos, Dan got down on one knee after having the ring for only two hours, fresh off a FedEx truck that was a day late, but he (surprisingly) kept his cool. Katharine accepted enthusiastically, and in that special moment, Dan's brother Golo caught it on camera, which became the basis for their engagement photos. They enjoyed a family celebration that evening after FaceTiming the Greenlee crew + friends.

Katharine & Dan Henning - Spring Photo Contest Winners

tred avon yacht club wedding

How they met: We have always lived intertwined lives thanks to the Eastern Shore of Maryland and the Tred Avon Yacht Club (TAYC) and we like to say we really met twice. First, Katharine was Dan’s bus girl at Latitude 38, in Oxford in 2005 but at that time the age difference was real and it was just a crush. They stayed friends over the years, running into each other at various stages of life, and it was thanks to our second meeting at TAYC the summer of 2019 that led to something more. That July 4th, it was unclear what was louder - the fireworks, or the butterflies. That same spot is where we got married three years later.

There was one more test - even more nervous than their first date on Dan’s boat “Weather or Knot,” was when Albie and Bowie met for the first time. They sniffed....their tails wagged happily, and the rest is history.

Best Part: While we absolutely loved the entire event overall, a couple key moments stick out: our first-look photos on the Oxford Bellevue Ferry, our wedding parties arriving by boat, and fire pits that really set a nice mood once the sun went down. Also, not having a sit-down dinner, but going with passed heavy hors ‘d’oeuvres and food stations gave us the opportunity to move around and spend more meaningful time with all our guests. Lastly, we really enjoyed dancing to the fun tunes from the Bachelor Boys Band.

The Proposal: Dan proposed to Katharine August 2021 in East Boothbay, Maine while visiting his family cottage. Down on the dock, for their usual sunset cocktails with the doggos, Dan got down on one knee after having the ring for only two hours, fresh off a FedEx truck that was a day late, but he (surprisingly) kept his cool. Katharine accepted enthusiastically, interrupting with “yes” not once, but twice (just as she did during our wedding ceremony!) They enjoyed a family celebration that evening after FaceTiming the Greenlee crew + friends.

Candise and Steven picked the most beautiful day for their engagement session in Oxford, Maryland. We spent the evening exploring the Tred Avon Yacht Club and we were lucky enough to have the whole place to ourselves! When Candise told me she loved ropes and anything nautical, I knew this was a place for them! These two have been together for over 6 years now and also happened to go to the same high school together. Their first date was at Doc’s in Centreville and they have been together ever since. While at a dinner with friends for Steven’s birthday, he caught Candise off guard and proposed with everyone there and with a beautiful sunset over the water! Now a wedding is planned for next July at the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club with lots of nautical details. Their sweet session ended with another beautiful sunset!

One could easily say Omsk Social Club isn’t your normal art collective: the names and even number of members remain unknown and their works are purely ephemeral experiences, developed as hybrids of Real Game Play (RGP) and Live Action Role Play (LARP). But in saying this in relation to their work, one must also ask: What is “normal”? It might be defined as “conforming to a type, standard, or regular pattern”, but Omsk subverts this notion, challenging everything we think we know about this so-called Life and our lived Reality. In the world of Omsk, everything is normal.

Founded in 2012 (then known as Punk Is Dada), the collective says, “the strongest piece of work we have ever come across is our own subcultures, these spaces of emotion, politics, aesthetics, fears and lust.” Rather than document subcultures in a static form, they began working with elements of RGP and LARP as a way to allow audiences to occupy these different spaces, even if only temporarily. Each work begins with an open call, asking for players to participate in a specific game. Participants (or, in art speak, the audience) are then sent emails with their character name, traits and objectives. It is up to them to further develop their unique identity and the game (or, again for you art folk, the performance) that unfolds according to their individual actions. Omsk sets the scene, but nothing is scripted, the plot unknown.

“We aim to induce states that could potentially be fiction or a yet unlived reality for the players,” Omsk says. “The game designs examine virtual egos and popular experiences allowing the works to become dematerialized hybrids of modern culture alongside unique personal experiences.” And unique experiences they are.

Emily McDermott: Let’s start with your name, because although one can speculate, I’m curious what “Omsk Social Club” means to you.

Omsk Social Club: Omsk was the city to which Dostoevsky was sent to after he was found guilty of trying to create social reform with culture, and he said he was literally buried alive. In the North of England, a Social Club is a traditional spot, something between a pub and a political think tank—but it would never call itself that. It’s a place people meet, talk, drink, gossip, fall in love, get into a fight. All of this contributes to Omsk’s makings.

EM : In LARP terminology, the word “bleed” represents a gray zone somewhere between fiction and reality, and the games you create take place in this space. Players often use elements of their own selves to develop their characters and the settings in which the games unfold are often the present day or not-too-distant future.  What is the significance of including relatable elements of reality? Why not just make your games pure fantasy?

OMSK : Every world is a fantasy, even the one you and we live in. We just say it’s a “reality” because that’s what we have been taught. These ideas are our main impetus for working this way. With uncertainty comes new theory, the uncanny is often our catalyst, and who gets to decide where an idea begins and where it ends once it has started? Well, in the case of an Omsk work, only the players. As soon as the game is set in motion, we no longer have any control over the reality that’s created, nor do we want to.

So the words reality and fantasy don’t really exist, and we re-appropriate Life out of fascination. What lies beyond the standard state of perception is commonly based on cognitive emotions and experience. Real Game Play allows us to tap into that and use lucidity as a form of direct action.

EM : Direct action that often deconstructs our current realities, so to speak, in order to imagine possible futures, to rethink and reframe current perspectives. What are some of the pollutions you see in our current world which you hope to address?

OMSK : Oppression of thought and the demarcation of individuals are two of the biggest pollutants we try to address during the works. Omsk’s role-playing scenarios manifest through community values, online presence and subcultural aesthetics. Revealing social codes, political narratives, goal-oriented objectives and emotional discourse, the players spend hours, days and sometimes even weeks inside these immersive established environments, engaging in mimetic warfare, cultural world building and exchange. They live through attacks and alliances from peers and public interfaces, such as the world-at-large, which evidently bleed into their personal discourse and live reflections. Our aim is that the people involved come out with ideas on the plasticity of kin and develop, forking and glitching strategies for everyday life. They hopefully see the potential in unorthodox auxiliary/tools through the pervasive game they joined and go on to practice some of these ideas in their daily life.

In the past, Omsk has designed games that have introduced landscapes and topics such as rave culture, survivalism, catfishing, desire and sacrifice, positive trolling, algorithmic strategies, and decentralized cryptocurrency. Also, talking about pollutions, there is no such thing as a clean space, but there is always the potential for chronic optimism to guide you into the next passage what we call life .

EM : At DeadAir in Zurich last summer, I played a character whose motivation was to steal the event’s identity and deliver it to a more neoliberal regime. In other words, my character’s primary interest was to monetize the DeadAir event. This is the opposite of what Omsk’s pieces aim to do—they’re generally open to anyone willing to participate—so why create such a character?

OMSK : Friction is just as important as ease. Take the concept of positive trolling: people say, how can a troll be positive? A troll can be someone who questions your beliefs. Can you learn to troll yourself, can you learn to see others trolling you as a positive rupture to avoid becoming dogmatic and inflexible? In Omsk, we can troll each other because underneath is a foundation of trust, security and a bond that allows us to be critical of each other. Neoliberal constructs tell us to be obtuse, to be the loudest. This is not a way to build anything.

EM : Following that vein, at a Cryptorave in Berlin, my character was an anarcho-primitivist—against all forms of technology and capitalism, and therefore one of the last people you would expect to show up at an event which requires mining crypto for entry. It was up to me to figure out an explanation of why and how my character came to be there. To do so required deep research. To be honest, I had no idea what “anarcho-primitivist” even meant when I received the character description.

OMSK : Generally, people have to go out and research something they have never heard of or a viewpoint they would never normally adhere to. Part of our concept is to spread knowledge. Someone once told us they felt like our work was an empathy training camp and, on another occasion, someone took their character to the G20 summit protest in Hamburg post-play because they were so curious and the character gave them a way into this space. We are only trying to break open the world. How that is done is entirely up to the player, they are in control.

EM : You are making art but it is always ephemeral, never to be acquired by a collector, institution or otherwise. Many artists currently working with ephemerality sell documentation and remnants thereof, or concurrently produce more market-friendly works. You sometimes sell editions of props used in games, but your work primarily lies in the experience itself. So how do you understand, or where do you see, your own artistic output in relation to the oversaturated economy?

OMSK : Honestly, we have no idea. We don’t concern ourselves with what the market or the art world says we should be doing. We do what we think needs to be done and if that means we need to sell editions to be able to make our work accessible for all—as we have a strong ethos against pay-to-play mentalities—that’s what we have to do. Also, for us, experience of the mind is just as valid as a piece of Art as a displayed object. One has memories, one has gossip they can share. One of the main aims of Art is to possess the viewer. An unforgettable painting or a stomach-lurching video clip is Art, not the material it is made from. Art is emotive, not physical. It’s very personal; that’s why we know we make Art.

EM : Lastly, the theme of this issue is “unchain change”, which I feel is a rather apt way to summarize a large part of Omsk’s practice. Much like I had to google “anarcho-primitivist” and its associations, your games free the mind from its typical patterns and require players to stray from their digital paths, rupturing algorithmic predictions. Additionally, as you mentioned, it’s accessible to all. But this is my point of view. What does “unchain change” mean to you?

OMSK : We could say that we have bred a new culture for the entertainment of work, and this is our chain. This work chain has reached such a level of abstraction over the last decades that we have entered another plane in our socio-economic-lifestyles—one that is equally as uncanny and fantastical as the ones Omsk creates. The human body/mind/spirit is what needs to become unchained. The points, focuses, knots, blockages of the body are always inflamed, but in certain moments in our lives they rupture or release in radical serenity. Omsk believes this is the answer: the body must become a war machine for its own emancipation only then can it begin to build the world in which it is free from its own shackles.

Omsk Social Club forks traditional methods of Live Action Role Play (Larp) through immersive installations and into Real Game Play (RGP) to induce states that could potentially be a fiction or a yet, unlived reality. Omsk works closely with networks of viewers, everything is unique and unrehearsed. The live installations they create examine virtual egos, popular experiences and political phenomena. Allowing the works to become a dematerialized hybrid of modern-day culture alongside the participant's unique personal experiences. In the past Omsk Social Club’s Real Game Play immersive environments have introduced landscapes and topics such as rave culture, survivalism, catfishing, desire&sacrifice, positive trolling, algorithmic strategies and decentralized cryptocurrency.

They have exhibited across Europe in various institutions, galleries, theatres and off-sites such as Martin Gropius Bau,  House of Electronic Kunst Basel, Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zürich, HKW, Berlin, CCCB, Barcelona, Volksbühne, Berlin and Stems Gallery, Brussels. They have been included in 6th Athens Biennale (2018), Transmediale Festival (2019), The Influencers (2018) and Impakt Festival (2018).

Project info.

We would like to propose a role-played dance piece through the lens of a fiction theory narrative. The narrative is centred around the idea of Otherkin and the notion of companion species - human beings entangled with other animals, organisms, landscapes and technologies. The work will bring up questions of new animism, translocality and why it is so important to leave behind the outdated notion of human exceptionalism.

OMSK Social Club – Main Trait, Motivation, Desire, Personality, Object: an interview

Dead Air Gossamer Fog, Zurich Omsk Social Club Credits Puppi Blakeson aka Ingeborg Wie

Dead Air Gossamer Fog, Zurich Omsk Social Club Credits Puppi Blakeson aka Ingeborg Wie

Text and interview by Dalia Maini —

I want to set the atmosphere. Before reading I invite you to open the link below and listen to the audio piece:

I chose to introduce OMSK Social Club with Burial because was the first artist mentioned when I asked about the influence Mark Fisher’s theories had on their practice. In fact « as kids we listened to Burial walking the streets of London, Manchester, Glasgow and Berlin. We lived these spaces he (Mark Fisher) came from, but what influenced us more was his later works, his thoughts on the hole motif, escape and living hell – this is one of the points of departure we work from. An illusion is just as real as you make it » replied their multiple voice.

Omsk Social Club is a collective of “many” based in Berlin, constantly mutating and broadening. They choose to keep the names of singular participants hidden since the nature of the group is rhizomatic and speculative. They told me their artistic concept and praxis come from their life and the subculture that represents them: « these spaces of emotion, politics, aesthetics, fears and lust we had experienced became our strongest inspiration. But we didn’t want to document them we wanted people to be able to live inside them » . Following this their practice is based on the use of traditional, but renewed, methods of Live Action Role Play (Larp) and Real Game Play (RGP), games where players embodies the roles of characters in a fictional setting. Through them Omsk engage the participants-players in transitional states that could potentially be fiction or hidden – so unlived- reality. Every player, during the time- based RGP session, becomes both creator and actor of an unpredictable game scenario, where topics such as rave culture, survivalism, catfishing, desire&sacrifice, positive trolling, algorithmic strategies and decentralized cryptocurrency are taken as urgent issues. Through the analysis of the constructed nature of the virtual ego OMSK enacts an experience that is a crossroad between the techno-capitalist culture of modernity and the personal, so intimate, experience of the singular. Cryptoraves often are the containers of these RGP session, technoparties where being for one night an otherness. They are called “crypto” because only through the process of computer mining -an integral part of a  cryptocurrency  network, used to generate and release new cryptocurrency- future gamers have access to their character, the location, and details.

So I thought being important to accompany our discourse with a sound that probably was echoing in their hears for long nocturnal hours and still inspirational for their works.

DM: Why this name? What is Omsk and why social club, isn’t any club “social”?

Omsk – Omsk was the city to which Dostoevsky was sent to after he was found guilty of trying to create social reform with culture – he said he was literally buried alive. All these add into Omsk’s makings metaphorically and a Social Club is a traditional spot in the north of England something between a pub and a political think tank, that would never call itself that, but for arguments sake. It’s a place where people meet, talk, drink, gossip, fall in love, get into a fight. We see ourselves in both these worlds one of the very desolate – extreme human strike that Dostoesky had to deal with and that of the other. We create with the players a space that’s constantly in limbo.

DM: I love when you speak about unlived reality , how many of them do you think exists?

Omsk – more than a human mind could ever compute.

DM: Do you think there is an alternative to capitalism? If yess, can you see the end of Capitalist Realism and further are you trying to experiment some worlds after it’s end?

Omsk – Every world is a fantasy even the one you or we live in we just say it’s a reality because that’s what we have been taught to say…these ideas are our main impetus to the way we work… with uncertainty comes new theory, the uncanny is often our catalyst and who gets to decide where an idea begins and where it ends, once it has started our works do believe in the end of Capitalism but to what we do not know, nor do we think we are the best-suited people to open such a world. The excitement we have is that we open the door to a world/s but then so many people have the key is just rhizomes with other people intentions. We provide a frame for chaos to ensue.

DM: Would you define your practice political? While Thinking about your RGP projects, I found some similitudes with the anti “folk- politic” theories of Nick Srnicek and Alex Williams [1] . You are using, not avoiding, the results and the media of capitalism to create a possible society.

Omsk – Yes, we are political (yes), but we are not political artists. Real Game Play is a fiction, but it’s a fiction that has the potential to become very real. This is the path we use to create a space in which people can think about themselves, society and the world outside. We have had the most engaging conversations with participating people on identity, voice, simulation, reality, the self, the other. The conversations are endless, they fork and spasm and last for months on end, some even years and we guess lifetimes. This is our work, it is constantly living and morphing and gaining new perspectives but not only from us, we are not game masters.

DM: How did you arrive to the idea of mining as a way to access to the Cryptoparties?

Omsk – The work is functional, you do mine Monero  [2] currency via a pool mining site when you press mine? Hence we used a real solution to provide the basic concept, we want people to see these spaces as functional not just fictive.

DM: The roles you gave sometimes are very hybrid, neither just human, or animal, or natural but between the cyborg and the “humus”. How much are you interested in analysing how the gamers embody their new self and behave with each other?

Omsk – We observe but we never analyse we are here to facilitate whatever people need to embody, to be honest they normally know themselves. We aim for empowering the individual not directing them. This is the reason why all the works we create are neither rehearsed or scripted. Even the characters are fairly open for interpretation so people can explore what they want to and the worlds remain adaptable and in flux.

Deep Intimacy – Gold and Beton – OMSK SOCIAL CLUB, Cologne, 2017.

DM: Something that really fascinates me is the imaginative effort you ask to the participants to play a new self, you give them space to think and just few coordinates. How much do you think our imaginative thought is affected by utopian/dystopian prefiguring of the future?

Omsk – Actually we think that this imaginative effort comes a lot from empowered thinking, as in as soon as the person is not afraid to commit to any idea things become very fluid – almost “natural”. We are more interested in showing this rewiring is actually quite effortless if you have a community to aid you. This does not mean that you will have a comfortable enlightened moment inside Omsk, quite the opposite, in our most immersive works, life is tumultuous and rages inside all that is present. These heavy dense emotions can be lust, discomfort, trolling or any other shade of the human psyche. But what we aim to do is… in the workshop beforehand we hope to build enough connection to the core community (physically and mentally) that even the hardest spaces, you are able to go through because you trust the people who are inside their too. We generally all cry or feel a great sense of loss and euphoria after each work and the most profound closeness is often described between players that have worked together, even if they hurt each other in game. A core player once showed us this meme, it was two tarot cards from the Raider-Waite [3] deck, one was The Sun that said “this is what they tell you enlightenment looks like” and then next to it there was The Tower and it read “this is actually what enlightenment looks like”. We think it describes Omsk completely.

DM: How much is important time in your practice? I mean, people need time to get used to be something/ someone different.

Omsk – Long durations and commitment are definetly near to our works, we require a lot from those who participate, but we hope we provide a lot in return. Most people who come to Omsk works; return over and over again, it is very much a living community now. We work against a typical system of art viewing but that’s not out of some radical spite, it’s just that that system does not work for us in all cases of our practice.

DM: Do you think the setting of your RGP or Cryptorave as the “objectual” production of your art?

Omsk – Yes…experience of the mind is just as valid as a piece of Art as a displayed object, one has memories, one has gossip they can share. One of the main aims in Art is to possess the viewer, an unforgettable painting or a stomach-lurching video clip is Art, not the material it is made from…Art is emotive, not physical…it is also very personal and collective – that’s why we know we make Art.

Luckly I had the chance to experience one of their RGP and Cryptorave in Berlin. For their Cryptoparty organized for the Transmediale Festival I have been mining for 11hrs to receive the character to embody: Fierce. After that experience as Dalia, but innerly keeping Fierce, in my ears is resonating Deep Intimacy , 2017 one of their stunning audiopiece… who is she a projection a phantasy of my own needs .

OMSK Social Club has exhibited across Europe at the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zürich, Bergen Kunsthalle, Gold and Beton Cologne and “Vomit Apocalypse” for Glasgow International and Kunsthalle Zürich. Last October they attended The Eternal Internet Brother/Sisterhood residency in Sri Lanka curated by Angelo Plessas. Their last cryptorave was in the frame of Athens Biennial.
