the-x-yachts-x6-5-is-a-20-metre-sailing-yacht

Danish delights: Inside the first X-Yachts X6^5

Lying alongside a blustery pontoon on the UK’s River Hamble, the first X6^5 presents an obvious step up for her Danish builder. Literally, in the sense of the boat’s imposing two metre high topsides, and figuratively, for a solid yard whose forte has been production cruising yachts with a turn of pace. The X6^5 promises fast passage times with the same lean, pretty lines as her smaller sisters, but she has a more muscular look consistent with her “mini superyacht” status.

That status rests in part on her size — at 20.1 metres LOA she is X-Yachts ’ biggest model to date — but also in the way she is designed and equipped: tender garage , hardtop bimini, generous hull windows, a flexible rig and endless options for customisation. She can be fitted out below to suit a couple with occasional guests, or for a crew.

Semi-custom can often be a casually applied description but in the case of the X6^5 it is a well-deserved epithet. Just look at her stunning carbon fibre wheel pedestals, cantilevered off the cockpit coaming; or the gorgeous laminated wooden wheel with its carbon fibre spokes. This theme is repeated throughout the boat, with carbon rig and bimini, custom moulded carbon fibre handholds and interior doors, which by themselves cost as much as a brand new performance skiff. None of these is a standard item.

“I am delighted with the way she looks,” says the owner of the first X6^5, “and I think the carbon internally mirrors the rig and the bimini, which are purely practical solutions to weight and strength.”

Yes, the hull comes out of a series mould but almost everything after that is up for discussion, from the finish to the configuration below decks. So, although hull No 1 was conceived with a large owner’s cabin forward, a double aft to starboard and two twin bunk cabins, hull No 4 will have a huge owner’s suite aft across the full width of the stern.

This meant building a new module for the deck mould and is part of what brought the bill for this boat to around €3.2 million ex VAT —compared to a standard €2.5 million. Niels Jeppesen, X-Yachts’ managing director and head designer, explains: “We raised the height of the cockpit above, creating a sort of bridge deck that gives a working and a guest cockpit.”

Similarly, this first boat’s snazzy carbon hardtop was built to the owner’s spec using bespoke tooling. This feature alone seals her credentials as a serious offshore cruiser: the bimini is studded with a dozen 110-watt solar panels — enough to supply 95 per cent of the boat’s hotel loads.

She is also cleverly fitted with concealed roller awnings, and you can choose between a capacious sprayhood that folds invisibly away beneath the coachroof teak or a fixed windscreen in the Scandinavian style. This is a boat that can make the most of a Med summer, but hungers for the challenge of an ocean crossing.

That Scandi feel continues below, where the finish is all walnut underfoot and pale nubuck leather from Sørensen. It has a chic, modern feel, with lots of natural light, white panelling, subtle indirect lighting and fine stainless steel work. There’s lots of room here, but don’t be fooled — there are unostentatious handholds exactly where they are required to get around when the boat is heeling under sail.

In the well equipped galley, the owner insisted on a snappy stainless steel worktop — seamless 6mm solid metal with a careful matt finish that almost seems to float. Naturally, there are all mod cons here and X-Yachts has fitted custom cupboard interiors to suit the owner’s crockery.

Jeppesen says that 95 per cent of clients opt for oak or teak joinery, but adds “we’re happy to deliver any sort of finish”. The Hamble-based design team will even produce a detailed 3D rendering of the interior to showcase your finish. “We’re willing to do what it takes to ensure the boat is precisely what the client wants,” he adds. Designers Guild is a key fabric supplier but it could be Loro Piana or Gucci if the owner so wishes.

After a night of 40 knot winds and biblical rain, our test day dawns bright and blustery. Beating into 16 knots blowing up the western Solent, the X6^5 makes an effortless 7 knots under just reefed main — a sublime North 3Di sail. Adding the inner jib, boat speed jumps to 8.5 knots and we hit 11 knots on a reach as the wind gusts up off Calshot Spit.

Sail controls are all handled via four electric Harken winches by the steering pedestals, and the below deck furlers are electrically controlled too, for true push-button sailing. The main is on a custom FurlerBoom, with more than a hint of Park Avenue to it. There is automatic boom levelling to ensure the sail rolls up smoothly, and horizontal battens to give the sail better shape for faster sailing.

Her semi-balanced twin rudders make for good handling, even as 30 knots bend her over on her ear. Stiffness is assured by X-Yachts’ trademark steel frame in the bilges, which also provides a very secure attachment point for the keel.

The rig is supremely tunable, thanks to the hydraulic backstay and forestay tensioners. The inner forestay and the gennaker can both be easily detached and lowered directly into the sail locker, and the mainsheet is fastened out of the way on the carbon arch over the cockpit. “I would sail solo and certainly the furling main helps with that,” the owner explains. “However, I opted not to put a self tacking track on the inner jib so it makes it harder alone!”

Though it gusts more than 30 knots at times, and the ride is exhilarating as we beat into the short Solent chop, the cockpit remains as dry as a bone. After the boat has walked sideways on to the pontoon using its bow and stern thrusters, I step back down to earth with only a light dusting of salt on my sunglasses.

X-Yachts Xp 38

The Xp 38 from X-Yachts is an exceptional choice for the performance-bound racer or cruiser, boasting superior performance and handling due to her T-Shaped keel and teak in the cockpit, coach roof and side decks. Owner's have enjoyed taking Red Five on wild races around the Solent and cruising towards the West Country with ease. Sailing and dock activities are simpler with added controls, a full cruising set up with a stack pack, making sail handling easier as well as an electric winch for raising the main and furling the jib. With 5 years of impeccable maintenance, Red Five is now looking for a new owner to love and appreciate her many talents.

About this X-Yachts Xp 38

Xp 38, Build number #48, commissioned 2014. White hull with dark blue hull stripes and 2.45m T-Shaped keel. Standard aluminium mast and furling jib. Teak in cockpit, coachroof and side deck. Below deck she has three cabins, with one heads, classic layout with U-Shaped galley and owner's v-berth forward. Highly specified for performance cruise or race.

Owners Comments

Red Five was our first yacht having sailed dinghies and racing small keel boats for many years. We were looking for a yacht that was not only great for cruising with family and friends but also a day racer that has dock side appeal. The Xp 38 delivers on all three bringing a smile to our faces every time we walk down the dock to board her. She is perfectly balanced with finger tip control in all conditions with a sportboat feel easily handled either short handed or with a full crew. We have had great fun with the family and friends club racing and the Round the Island winning our class a number of times including the X-Yacht Regatta this year!

Racing aside she has mainly been used for cruising around the Solent and further afield for our annual West Country cruise to Falmouth and back. Passage planning at 6 knots seems to work well but she is much faster if you want to press on. Upwind is where she really excels cutting effortlessly through any sea making cruising a joy with all controls in the cockpit including the main electric winch which we added for ease of raising the main and furling the jib.Over the last few years we have added a full cruising set of sails and furling G Zero together with a stack pack to make sail handling easy. The original North 3DL sails are stored for racing if you want that extra bit of speed !

Since we bought Red Five 5 years ago the X-Yacht team have been brilliant at supporting us and maintaining her every year to a very high standard making ownership stress free. With the family now grown up my wife and I want to do some more travelling so feel now is a good time to pass Red Five to another owner to enjoy her many talents. Once we have satisfied our travel bug I have no doubt we will be back to an X-Yacht maybe even Red Five if she is available!

New Listing – 2016 X-Yachts Xc-45 Mk2

Posted Friday 24th July 2020

x yachts hamble

Grabau International  is delighted to announce the new listing of the  2016 X-Yachts Xc 45 Mk2 ‘XPLORER OF HAMBLE’.

Very rare to the market, Mk2 ‘Next Generation’ X-Yachts Xc 45 from May 2016. One owner since new and extensively fitted out for trans-Atlantic sailing complete with desirable in-boom furling option. Immediately available at a huge saving over new build price and EU VAT paid.

FURTHER BROKER’S COMMENTS:

XPLORER represents a unique opportunity to acquire an immediately available, EU VAT paid, Mk 2 ‘Next Generation’ example of the European Yacht of the Year winning Niels Jeppesen designed X-Yachts Xc 45. Launched in May 2016, XPLORER was ordered by her experienced owner as a replacement for his Hallberg-Rassy 412 and fitted out specifically to take part in the World Cruising Club’s 2016 ARC where she finished 35th out of circa 150 monohull entrants.

With the equivalent of over Euro 200,000 in additional options and inventory items added to her standard specification, XPLORER is arguably one of the most complete 45ft performance bluewater cruising yachts on the market today. Her specification highlights include:- • Standard 2.20m keel • Epoxy system to hull • 3-cabin, 2-heads classic layout in full teak with dedicated forward-facing chart table and L-shaped • galley • Teak side decks • Hydrovane windvane self-steering • 6kw Fisher Panda generator • Upgraded battery charger with 2kw inverter • Retractable 24vDC bowthruster • Electric main halyard winch • Electric mainsheet winches • Furlerboom in-boom furling system • North sail Norlam battened primary sail package • One Sails furling asymmetric, furling staysail and storm jib • Twin carbon fibre spinnaker poles • Upgraded Raymarine instrument package including radar/chart plotter & AIS • Iridium satellite coms system with Red Box router system • Fusion multimedia centre with Bose speakers • 32” LED TV in saloon • Leather upholstery in saloon • Additional front-opening freezer • Washing machine • 16,000 BTU air-conditioning in saloon • 24vDC ventilation fans • Curved windscreen with sprayhood • Bimini • Dinghy & outboard • Full safety equipment package

Perfectly suited to effortless Med’ cruising or more serious blue water adventures XPLORER is now offered for sale to make way for a larger yacht.

OWNER’S COMMENTS:

We commissioned the build of XPLORER OF HAMBLE because we wanted a very high quality cruising boat with a great sailing capability. As fans of the practicality afforded by aft cockpit boats, we previously owned a Hallberg-Rassy 412, also ordered from new as this was the largest aft cockpit model offered by the brand. We particularly enjoyed her sporty sailing performance, but soon felt the need for more accommodation and storage for longer distances and in particular taking part in the World Cruising Club’s ARC trans-Atlantic rally. The well-proven X-Yachts Xc 45 was the obvious solution, especially as they had just launched the new and improved Mk2 version.

XPLORER OF HAMBLE has fulfilled her brief perfectly and we have enjoyed many miles of fast but comfortable, effortless cruising. Under sail she will easily get to 8 knots very quickly and copes with all sea conditions incredibly well. My wife gets seasick and while XPLORER is not quite a cure, her sea-kindly motion has made things quite a bit easier. Under engine, she effortlessly cruises at 7/7.5 knots at just over 2-2200 revs with her Yanmar 80hp returning impressive fuel consumption at around 4l/hr. If you want to get there more quickly and burn more fuel 8 knots is easily achievable.

We sailed XPLORER OF HAMBLE from the X-Yachts yard in Denmark down to the Med for the summer of 2016. What a shakedown cruise! The Bay of Biscay and the Gibraltar Straights posed some good challenges which she took in her stride. We then left for the Canary Islands to take part in the 2016 ARC. We made the crossing with a crew of four which was perfect. We had lots of light wind days and some big squalls but at no point was her comfort in question, thanks to her sailing capability, bright and airy interior, large and well-protected cockpit and ample water tankage (large enough that we felt no need to take on the complication and potential unreliability of a watermaker). Having arrived in Saint Lucia, we enjoyed a winter season in the Caribbean, where XPLORER’s air-conditioning really paid for itself in keeping the whole boat pleasantly cool.

After her return from the Caribbean (by ship), we have based XPLORER in the Mediterranean and my wife and I have since enjoyed cruising around Spain, the Balearics, Sardinia, Italy and France. XPLORER is extremely easy for the two of us to handle thanks to her multiple foresail options, in-boom furling and electric winches with all the lines led back to the cockpit. The in-boom furling is a fantastic system and we’d never have anything else in future.

We now have our eyes on doing the World ARC in a couple of years time and feel for that trip, where we’d virtually become liveaboards with more crew members and friends joining us along the way, we need something a bit bigger again. If X Yachts made an XC58 it would be perfect!’

MANUFACTURER’S COMMENTS:

One of the main differences between the Xperformance line and the new Xcruising line is the hull design. The Xc line, with its deeper hull sections, provides a greater interior volume for tanks, and other essential cruising equipment; a feature which also provides smoother sailing in all weathers.

The Xc 45 is designed and developed for long-distance cruising, incorporating the most significant X-Yachts qualities: powerful main engine in a well-insulated compartment, with a 3-bladed folding propeller; large fuel and fresh water tankage, all strategically located low and central in the yacht for optimum weight distribution; an immensely strong steel hull girder frame, taking the loads from the composite lead/cast iron keel as well as from the keel stepped mast.

The prominent feature of the deck is a clean, uncluttered layout with flush mounted, openable deck hatches and stainless steel dorades for optimum ventilation. The sail cabin on the foredeck accommodates space for the asymmetric spinnaker, fenders and the optional bow ladder, and provides good access to the anchor locker.

To access the swimming platform, the transom is hinged down into a horizontal position, whilst the aft deck is lowered to create a walkway. A combination of electronically operated actuators, struts and springs makes the transformation between closed and open cockpit an effortless task. Also integrated into the platform is a bathing ladder and a shower unit.

All sail handling is executed from the cockpit. Halyards, reefing and control lines are led to the winches on the coach roof; the mainsail sheet is led to dedicated winches at the helm. The main sail track has been moved out of the cockpit in front of the sprayhood, providing an uncluttered cockpit with free passage throughout.

The helmsman’s position provides an excellent view forward both during sailing and while manoeuvering in the harbour. The control instrument console ensures a good view of the navigation instruments and is also a secure handhold when moving around while sailing.

YACHTING PRESS REMARKS:

”If you thought this was just going to be another X-Yachts branded performance cruiser, think again. This is an impressive, genuine long-distance passagemaker” … “Seasoned sailors… looking to hang up their racing boots and sail with wives and families, need look no further.” Yachting World – UK

“Even though she is a true cruiser she can’t deny her roots. And exactly therefore the visual, attractive boat has got its best scores from the jury as it is seldom you see the compromise between comfort, security and performance succeed so well – and this already in the first attempt.” Yacht – Germany

Niels Jeppesen hits the target again. Born from the X-Yachts, the market leader for performance cruisers, this elegant and fast cruiser matches her goals. She is spacious on deck and inside and she offers ample storage space for your needs for long distance cruising maintaining the pleasure and the performance of a true sailing yacht. Yacht & Sail- Italy

“She is timeless and attractive with her retro-stern, classical high coachroof and old good looking sheerline. The aft cockpit solution and adequate hull beam have the advantage of creating fine interior volume plus a roomy cockpit. Interior styling in teak is inspired by theX-55 and feels fresh and modern.” Båtnytt – Sweden
