Richard Horden designed the roller reefing canopies to fit the yacht inspired architecture. This was later developed into production by various Austrian, German and USA canopy manufacturers. The horizontal architecture nestles into the New Forest woodland location with views westward over the Avon river valley. The painter Augustus John’s studio can be seen on the distant hillside.

Take a Look at This Huge Yacht-Inspired Home Going Up Near Lido Beach

The home was designed to resemble a luxury yacht, with a rounded "bow" pointing toward the Gulf of Mexico.

The company building the home, Trinity Construction & Design, recently celebrated the completion of the home's concrete shell.

The home will be three stories tall, with a roof deck on top.

From the roof, you can see all the way to Big Pass.

The structure of the building was made with more than 100 tons of steel and more than 1,500 yards of concrete.

Construction began on July 1, 2019, and is expected to take two and a half years in total.

With no other structures on the home's northern, western or southern sides, the property offers unrestricted views in nearly every direction.

If you've been out to Lido Beach in recent months, there's no way you missed it: the massive new home currently under construction at 1 John Ringling Blvd., right near the island's northern stretch of public beach.

Construction on the project began on July 1, 2019. The company building the 10,000-square-foot home, Trinity Construction & Design , recently celebrated a milestone—the topping out of the project—and invited Sarasota Magazine to tour the property.

Doug Libertore, who owns a residence adjacent to the home, purchased the property for $2.3 million in 2011. The house was designed by Mark Sultana of DSDG Architects  after an original design and concept was completed by Jan Stanbury of J. Stanbury Design Inc. in 2017 . The look  is intended to echo the style and shape of a luxurious yacht, with a curved "bow" protruding out toward the beach and the Gulf of Mexico. There are no other structures on the home's northern, western or southern sides, which gives the property unrestricted views of the sand and the water. And the home is tall enough that, when you're standing on the roof deck, you can see all the way to downtown Sarasota.

The home's pool will be located on the third floor, at the point where the concrete juts out the farthest. Behind it will be a patio space below roof openings covered by retractable awnings, and then the master suite and kitchen area. Sliding glass doors will provide exceptional views no matter where you stand. The second floor will contain more bedrooms, and the roof will boast a glass-enclosed room from which you can see all the way to Big Pass.

With the main structure of the building now complete, Trinity will turn to framing the interior. Utilities and finishes will then follow. Thomson estimates that the total construction process should take roughly two and a half years. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the project has remained on schedule. Trinity declined to provide a total budget for the project; permits filed with the City of Sarasota estimate construction costs at just over $4 million.

Building the home has taken an incredible amount of planning and resources, says Nehamiah Thomson, Trinty's vice president of field operations. The company is required to protect nearby dunes and trees, and must be careful not to disturb sea turtle nests.  To steady the home, the company has driven 149 piles 35 feet deep into the ground, and has used more than 100 tons of steel and more than 1,500 yards of concrete. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime project," Thomson says.

Yacht House / Robin Monotti Architects - Windows, Coast

Text description provided by the architects. London based Robin Monotti Architects completed ‘Yacht House’ in September 2012. The 875 sq m contemporary building creates an outstanding feature on the Crimean shoreline.  It houses four rental apartments arranged around tall yacht storage at ground level, and connected by a staircase tower. The apartments provide spectacular views across the sea and the mountains, and a direct and immediate connection to the coastal environment that surrounds them.

Yacht House / Robin Monotti Architects - Coast

In 2011 Robin Monotti’s Ukranian client acquired the site which lies within the Foros Shore resort owned by the Donetsk Steel Group. With a Mediterranean-like climate and dramatic scenery, the Crimea is known as the Russian Riviera. Foros is located at the southernmost tip of the Crimea, along the most sought after 30 km band of coastline in the Ukraine. Because of its enduring popularity, the area has a rich political and architectural heritage. Neighbours include the dachas of former USSR president Gorbachev and current Ukrainian president Yanukovich, and close by are magnificent palaces and churches from the Tsarist era.

Yacht House / Robin Monotti Architects - Windows, Facade

Yacht House is a contemporary response to Russia’s dacha tradition. Robin Monotti’s design is uncompromisingly modern, but also open, playful and people focussed. This is important for a country that remembers the repressive Soviet regime and its association with brutalist architecture.

Yacht House / Robin Monotti Architects - Windows, Facade

Brief The client initially required winter storage space for his 13 metre yacht. The client then decided to add three rental apartments and captain’s accommodation to make the most of the outstanding site. A significant challenge was how to design the building so that the apartments were not overpowered by the massive door required for the yacht.  Other challenges were presented by a steeply sloping site in a seismically active area, and its proximity to the sea which in bad weather could drench the house in corrosive salt water.

Yacht House / Robin Monotti Architects - Image 5 of 17

Solution The design commenced with a yacht room 7 metres wide, 15 metres deep and 6 metres high on the ground floor giving access via a 25’ door to a railed slipway in front.  To balance the 25’ door and enable dramatic, unrestricted views across the Black Sea, Robin Monotti proposed three distinctive volumes above and beside the tall boat house. By offsetting the volumes, the design provided a variety of terraces at different levels, extensive views and outdoor access.

Yacht House / Robin Monotti Architects - Windows, Chair, Door, Glass, Balcony

“Yacht house is an organic composition” explains Monotti. “We started with the box for the boat, then added accommodation alongside, terraces, and finally the stair tower. But ultimately the building is about the nearness of the sea and the huge skies. We wanted people to experience their surroundings – the sound of the water, the sea winds, the changing light and moods, the changing temperatures, even the salty taste in the air – as if they were already on a yacht”.

Yacht House / Robin Monotti Architects - Windows, Handrail

The outside is brought inside by 9 metre wide floor to ceiling windows in the main apartments which provide almost seamless seascapes.  When the bi-folding doors are fully open the interior living spaces feel like shaded outdoor spaces.  Porthole windows continue the marine theme.

yachting house

Glass railings to all balconies and terraces allow for uninterrupted views, and a shared 135 sq m solarium terrace on the fourth floor provides 360 degree views of the sea and the Crimean Mountains behind.  A variety of different outdoor terraces and balconies offer contrasting views over the surrounding landscape.

yachting house

A tall stair tower links the floors and, with its slit-like windows, recalls the nearby defensive Genoese fortifications of Balaklava.  The narrow windows restrict light and views so that surprise and delight is enhanced when the main living areas, with their astounding light and views, are entered from the tower.  The slit windows also provide privacy on the side of the building that faces the resort.

yachting house

The captain’s accommodation and the first floor flat provide studio accommodation, with two bedroom apartments on the third and fourth floor. The flats are fully furnished with high quality white Italian furniture.

yachting house

Environmental Features The building is constructed of reinforced concrete throughout to make the structure capable of withstanding earthquakes and to provide additional protection against winter storms. There was a conscious effort to reduce light pollution in the outside areas. It was important that the focus for guests at night time would be on the natural landscape, in order for them to witness the reflection of the moon, stars and sea. An influx in outside lighting would restrict guests from engaging with nature and the surrounding landscape. Off-white paint was chosen for the exterior of the building in order to absorb the least amount of solar radiation possible, as well as to enhance the visibility of the building. Porthole windows to the sides of the building provide cross ventilation.

CECI N’EST PAS UN BATEAU

Our boats are manufactured as unique items because we love to build them together with you who are going to use them. That’s why we decided to set up Tuxedo Yachting House. To put our passion and expertise at the service of your boat and your time at sea with the people you love .

A Tuxedo is more than a yacht: it’s an experience, it’s an expression of character, it’s a journey that begins long before you hit the water. It is a wonderful adventure that begins when you imagine your boat .

Why settling for a boat when you can have a Tuxedo? Tuxedo Yachting House of Laura and Francesco Ceccarelli is the only Italian boatyard that provides with 60 years of family-run activity in the construction of superyachts and 40 years of aluminium yachts from 14 to 54 metres that have become synonymous with elegance and reliability.

That’s why every Tuxedo is different: because everyone is different. Every life is a work of art. Every wish deserves to be fulfilled. Tuxedo Yachting House does not build boats: it builds your Tuxedo, because ceci n’est pas un bateau .

yachting house

These are the concepts that inspire Tuxedo Yachting House to create the boat you want. We want to give you the opportunity to explore the world of the possible, until you find what you want. Because nothing is more perfect than your wish .

Made In Italy

Every Tuxedo is the result of the Ligurian shipbuilding tradition developed by the vision of Aldo Ceccarelli in the 1960s and then Laura and Francesco from the late 1990s. A family capable of transforming the name of a shipyard into a synonym for pure Made in Italy elegance. In Lavagna, between Portofino and Sestri Levante, Tuxedo Yachting House makes only unique pieces for you .

The elevation to power of that know-how that has made Italian yachting the most loved and copied in the world.

Customer Care

…tailored.

Wearing your favourite suit, sitting in your favourite chair, your favourite place. Nothing puts you more at ease. Because they are no longer mere ‘things’, but become an extension of you. They fit you like a glove, as if they were painted on you . A Tuxedo gives you a space that gives you the same perfect comfort. Capable of arousing new and beautiful emotions. To make you feel at ease and at the same time have the joy of discovering something exciting every day .

Meet the needs of everyone on board: yours, your family, guests and crew. Everyone can enjoy the benefits of cruising on a Tuxedo, regardless of its size. Because pleasure and elegance are not measured in feet.

The only wish you will feel the need to fulfil on board your Tuxedo is to have even more time at sea.

yachting house

With our Tuxedo Bespoke formula you are at the centre of our work and everything becomes possible for you. Even having the opportunity to tell us about your boat and design it with us without moving from your home or office. We will come to you if you want. To save you time, to preserve your privacy, to let you decide every moment of your journey: from the idea to the sea experience . When choosing your Tuxedo you can talk directly to the person who makes the boat and not to a commercial intermediary . The same difference you have between going to a dealer to order a car or designing your supercar with the founder of the car manufacturer. We chose small production precisely because we want to give you all the space, time and attention you need to build your boat. After all, it is the very essence of our raison d’être .

Savoir Faire

Artisan boatyard.

Seriality is not an option for us.

We have built our experience by building big yachts and so we tackle every project, regardless of size. We want you to benefit from the same level of customization and care usually reserved for mega-yacht owners .

For each space we identify its purpose and identity, interpreting it with elements that provide function, aesthetics and soul. To give you a yacht that satisfies your needs as well as your senses .

With this in mind, we develop a proposal with you that you can see taking shape day after day, first as a project and then in the boatyard. As no mass-produced boat will ever be able to do – to let you enjoy the exclusivity that only a boatyard can give you .

yachting house

Ready to adapt

Flexibility.

We chose aluminum because there is no need for molds, which are necessary for fiberglass-made boats. After all, building a boat is a path that is not always linear, often being defined just as the yacht takes shape.

This allows us to adjust every detail, accommodating the legitimate decision-making changes of everyone involved in the process of buying a boat , whether it is you, your wife, or the need of the crew

Thanks to aluminum, this flexibility of choice remains even during the boat’s construction, with no delays in normal construction time and no need to make new molds .

This is also why experienced boat owners choose aluminum for their second or third boat because they fully understand its countless advantages .

Beyond the boat

Every Tuxedo can literally be made into a work of art. Three young, highly-regarded artists Alan Borguet, Gianluca Patti and Paolo Treni have proposed their vision to make the livery of your Tuxedo unique .

Because as Andrea Zardin of the BianchiZardin contemporary art gallery says: “ There is a strong parallelism between art and boats . In both cases, the visual impact is fundamental, an emotional attraction cannot be ignored. But behind it there is a whole process of creation and preparation that goes beyond aesthetics.

And even more often it is the process that brings us even closer to what we are observing, or even experiencing, making us appreciate new and deeper aspects of it. And in the case of a unique object like a Tuxedo, the resemblance is even more intimate “.

yachting house

Our only solution: your vision.

The greatest strength of the professionals who work in the Design Department of the Tuxedo Yachting House of Laura and Francesco Ceccarelli is the opportunity to actually listen to your needs and desires, or to work with your personal architect, not only because they feel like it, but because this gives them – and you – the opportunity to fulfil every request, from the conception of the idea to sailing at sea. So you can have exactly the boat you want.

Whether it is the customization of an existing design in our catalogue, or the development of a yacht in different shapes and sizes, the yard, as a true ambassador of nautical exclusivity, is always ready to find the right option for you. So you can enjoy the added value of a group of professionals ready to advise you with their decades of experience so that you can choose what you want, whenever you want, wherever you want.

The story behind Benetti: The House of Yachting

As one of the oldest shipyards in the world, Benetti describes itself as The House of Yachting to encapsulate its 150 years of history, experience, tradition, and knowledge. Benetti’s legacy includes some of the world’s most recognisable yachts, including Spectre , Freedom (ex: Reverie ) and Soundwave (ex: 11.11) , that have been created by leading designers, such as Giorgio Cassetta and Stefano Natucci.

“The House of Yachting should not be understood as a proper brand per sé,” says Marco Valle, the Azimut | Benetti Group’s CEO. “It is a way of describing the shipyard which contains a promise to its clients and partners. Benetti has such a presence in the yachting industry because it is The House of Yachting, and that is what has allowed the shipyard to develop such a unique and valuable offering.”

Founded in 1873

Benetti’s impact on the superyacht sector is monumental, with 362 yachts measuring over 24 metres delivered to date according to BOATPro. One yacht that proved to be a huge turning point for the brand was the 86-metre Nabila. The largest and most extravagant superyacht on the water when she was launched in 1980 she set new standards in the sector. The build ultimately led to financial trouble for the build, but this then opened the door for Paolo Vitelli to purchase the brand.

Now more than 40 years later, this milestone has been followed by a myriad of modern-day successes, which have all contributed to Azimut | Benetti Group’s status as the world’s most extensive yacht and megayacht network.

In 2016, Benetti took a bold initiative to create a building hub dedicated to the construction of yachts over 80 meters. From this shed came the likes of the 107-metre Luminosity , 107-metre Lana and 108-metre IJE – the trio of yachts delivered in 100 days in 2020 that broke Benetti’s 100-metre barrier and set a new record for the industry.

More recently, the Benetti B.Yond 37M established itself as the greenest model in its class. The technologically forward and revolutionary semi-custom design features four decks and a steel hull powered by a hybrid system.

Not just a builder

While expanding its portfolio, Benetti accrued the knowledge and ability to meet increasingly innovative and demanding orders. Time and time again, the yard delivers on its highly-engineered naval platform with beautiful finishes, future-proof decor and technology – all of which benefits from Benetti’s rich history, experience and heritage.

“Benetti is not just tradition, it is also continuous innovation, a constant effort to put its deep knowledge at play to anticipate the desires of its owners and the latest trends on the market,” explains Valle. “The House of Yachting’s purpose is to set Benetti’s all-encompassing standard as a benchmark in the global luxury yachting scene.”

Another contributor to The House of Yachting’s high standards is the yard’s cooperation with brilliant architects and designers. Since the 1980s, Benetti saw a rising evolution in size and complexity of the yachts, which demanded input and expertise from the likes of Sinot Yacht Design, Bannenberg & Rowell Design, RWD, Cor D. Rover, Bonetti/Kozersky and Studio Lazzarini Pickering. As a result, Benetti was able to become one of the most versatile and innovative builders that delivered on design and functionality in a uniquely recognisable style.

Benetti’s Order Book

Today, Benetti reports a full order book until 2027, filled with a variety of custom builds and yachts from its five-category fleet: Class, B.Yond, Oasis and B.NOW. With 58 upcoming superyacht deliveries recorded on BOATPro, Benetti’s two sites in Viareggio and Livorno are working non-stop.

“There are more than 200 suppliers in our supply chain, and we have developed a relationship of value and trust with each one of them,” explains Valle. “We involve our partners in all of our future projects so that we can keep growing together.”

A superyacht ordered with Benetti can take up to five years to be completed. For Benetti owners, the wait is nothing short of worthwhile. “Our owners are lovers of beauty, deep connoisseurs of aesthetics and art, with very clear ideas about the design and technologies they want on board and are therefore willing to wait longer to have their Benetti yacht,” explains Valle.

“They identify with our values and know that we can guarantee them very high-quality standards. They know that Benetti is able to respond to any of their wishes because we guarantee thorough control over every phase of the project – from design to the realisation of every smallest detail – following them step by step at every stage, including after sales.”

Nautical success

The Azimut | Benetti Group is the world’s largest superyacht builder by total length of yachts under construction in BOAT International’s Global Order Book , and has been since 1999. The secret to this success? “We do really believe that one of the reasons for our success as The House of Yachting lies in our origins,” says Valle. “Benetti has its roots in Tuscany, in what is still today one of the main hubs of the yachting industry, while at the same time being the cradle of art.”

“Being this close to cities such as Florence, Pisa, and Siena, just to mention a few, has certainly influenced the development of this concept of elegant beauty that we want to embody in our yachts and that our owners have come to appreciate and recognise,” he adds.

The city history starting in the 16th century, the Cossack fortress called Kalmius was built at the mouth of Kalmius river for the purpose of protecting their hunting grounds, fisheries and salt-works against devastating raids of Crimean Tatars. After the Russo-Turkish War (1768–1774), the great influx of orthodox Greeks from Crimea to the area caused the local population growth. In 1782 it was the capital of Uyezd in Azov Governorate of Russian Empire. After construction of the railway line from Yuzovka in 1882 made this city to a local trading centre. At the end of the 19th century, a subsidiary of the Belgian company SA Providence Russe opened a steelworks in Sartana near Mariupol. In 1933 a new steelworks (Azovstal) were built along the Kalmius River.

The city was heavily damaged by Russian bombardment in the spring of 2022.

Orientation [ edit ]

Mariupol is divided into four neighborhoods or 'raions'. There are:

  • Ilyichivsky Raion is the northern part of the city, the largest and most industrialized neighborhood in the city. Commonly known as: Zavod (“Factory”) of Ilyich.
  • Ordzhonikidzivsky Raion (after Sergo Ordzhonikidze) is at the east part of the city, on the left coast of Kalmius river. Common name: the Left Coast.
  • Prymorsky Raion is in the south of the city, on the coast of the Azov Sea. The everyday name of the central part this neighbourhood is simply "Port".
  • Zhovtnevy Raion (Russian: Oktyabrsky – after the Great October Revolution, 1917) is the central city raion. The everyday name of the raion is simply "the Centre", or "the City".

Climate [ edit ]

Mariupol has a humid continental climate. December-March is the humid period, about 15 rainy days per month. The highest temperature is 38 °C, in August. The temperature of the water in summer (Jun-Aug) is 22–24 °C.

We already know the Wally WHY200 is spacious—the 89-foot yacht has an interior the size of a larger 165-foot superyacht—but now we can confirm it is stylish, too.

As mentioned, the WHY200 offers the comfort and space of a larger vessel. A wide beam of 25 feet and a high profile ensure a generous interior volume of 200 GT. The main salon is the same width as that of a 160-footer, for instance. The unit in Singapore is the first to feature the “main deck entertainment” layout, which was designed specifically for the Asia Pacific (APAC) market. Her tall 15-foot glazed bow houses a spectacular living area with a large round table, a bar, a wine cellar, and sweeping panoramic views.

A one-piece laminated carbon staircase connects the main deck to the lower and upper decks. On the upper deck, Wally’s signature glass and carbon fiber dome is fitted with a plush lounge for relaxation. The extended, structural top has no supporting pillars to ensure the vistas are uninterrupted. The lower deck on this particular WHY200 is dedicated to guests, with a luxe owner’s cabin at the bow and two swanky guest cabins.

The exterior decks are replete with Loro Piana’s chic custom furniture and technical outdoor fabrics, which are resistant to salt, sunlight, and wind. The beach club, for example, features the Delight chairs Loro Piana designed with Exteta. The beach club is also fitted with fold-out terraces and two “invisible” garages for tenders and toys.

The first WHY200 and a wallypower58 will be on display Singapore Yachting Festival from April 25 to 28. Concurrently, another wallypower58 hull will be on show at the Palma International Boat Show in Spain from April 25 to 28.

From ‘Sad’ to Stunning: Overhaul and Refit Brings an Old Yacht Back to Life

Entrepreneur steve sidwell spent three years and a ‘few million dollars’ renovating the 112-foot yacht ascente, the yacht dates for 1994 and is 34 meters., newsletter sign-up, daily briefing.

Delivers the most important property news around the world to your inbox each weekday

Entrepreneur Stephen Sidwell knew that the down-at-her-heels yacht named Ascente, with its unusually modern and completely open layout and sight lines, was the one for him just a few minutes after stepping on board.

“I had been looking for a yacht of similar size for two or three years,” he said. “I had been to the Monaco and Fort Lauderdale boat shows, but I never found anything I could afford and that I liked.”

MORE : It Was a Men’s Club, a Watering Hole for U.S. Troops, Then a Warehouse. Now, It’s a Brilliant London Home.

Back in his hometown of Vancouver, he saw that the 34-meter Ascente was listed for sale. The 1994 yacht “had kind of gotten away from the owner, from a maintenance perspective,” Sidwell, 61, said. “It looked sad and smelled old and musty.”

The western hull and sky lounge.

“As soon as I was on the boat I knew that it had the exact layout I had wanted,” he remembered of that 2014 day. “I knew I could refit it, because of the open layout, and bring it up to modern standards. If it was structurally sound I would buy it.”

Indeed, it was just as solid as it looked, and after a couple of rounds of negotiations, “I was able to buy it at a substantial price discount” from the list price of $1.75 million, said Sidwell, a serial entrepreneur who has founded companies in various industries, including manufacturing, retail, real estate, investment banking, healthy restaurants and food brands.

The pilot house, or bridge, It has seating for 10.

And then he began what would turn out to be a three-year renovation and complete refit of the 112-foot yacht at the Platinum shipyard in Vancouver.

“Every April, I would tell them, drop your tools and put it back in the water,” and then he would have them restart the refit in October, Sidwell said.

“I absolutely love it,” he said. “There are so many things I like about this boat. I had anticipated I would have it for three or four years, and it’s now 10 years and I like it even better.”

Mansion Global Boutique:   ‘She-Shed’ Gift Ideas for Mother’s Day

But Sidwell is now on the hunt for a bigger boat and has put Ascente on the market for $3.495 million with Fraser Yachts.

“Doing a refit of this magnitude is a very difficult thing,” owner Stephen Sidwell said.

“We kept the basic structure and didn’t change the layout,” Sidwell said. “We redid everything that you can see on the exterior—new paint, all new flooring, all new paneling, a new galley, new appliances, all new furniture.”

“Doing a refit of this magnitude is a very difficult thing,” Sidwell said. “There are hundreds of decisions from thousands of options that need to be made—interior decorating, mechanical, electrical, electronics, safety, and the guest and crew onboard experience.”

Ascente now features 3,500 square feet of interior living space—“that’s a huge volume for a boat of that size”—and 2,000 square feet of exterior deck space, he said. “I reached out to Greg Marshall, a renowned naval architect, and he helped me change some of the lines to give it a more modern look.”

“In the end, it was an extremely rewarding process for me, and I will definitely do it again,” Sidwell said. “However, there were plenty of moments when even I thought I was crazy.”

Ascente now features 3,500 square feet of interior living space

The main deck now has “five guest state rooms and two crew quarters for four [and] a very, very large salon/saloon and dining area, with about 300 degrees of glass,” he said. There is also a “large aft area with two fireplaces—they really warm that space up. It’s probably the most popular space on the whole boat.”

The pilot house, or bridge, is another favorite spot. “It has seating for 10, and when we’re cruising that’s where we all hang out,” he said. “It’s a wonderful space to congregate when we’re under way. We do our eating up there. Most of the time I captain the boat myself.”

The yacht has 2,000 square feet of exterior deck space.

Sidwell estimates that 95% of the time he uses Ascente for “family, with some corporate entertaining, and I do two or three charters a year,” he said.

“It’s a highly sought-after charter vessel,” he said. “There are not many charter vessels like Ascente in the Pacific Northwest.”

“It has a very open, modern layout and people really like that,” he said. “Because of the volume, it seems like a 135- to 155-foot boat.”

In his own words, here are Sidwell’s thoughts about the refit with some advice for others looking to do the same.

How do you describe your aesthetic: Luxury contemporary and expedition ready.

Biggest lesson learned/advice to others: Sometimes shipyards have so many conflicting demands from other clients that your project can get completely lost, so you need to be very involved or have a very good project manager to represent you. Notice that I said project manager, not a captain or owner’s representative. Captains are not trained in project management, and a yacht refit is a massive project with dozens of people and trades that need to be extremely well coordinated to complete on time and on budget. I had weekly meetings with the yard supervisors.

Keep the systems simple: Yacht systems are so complicated today, and it is easy to be sold a very complicated system that is costly to install and operate, requires additional or skilled crew, and then is often prone to failure. One of the things I am so happy with is that our boat is reliable partly because it has simple bullet-proof systems.

Biggest surprise: How fuel efficient our engines are and how easy the yacht is to operate with only two people, including the captain.

Favorite room after the renovation: Salon and dining. It has expansive spaciousness and is a luxurious, welcoming and entertaining space with 270-degree views. It has been compared to a Four Seasons hotel by visitors.

Most dramatic change: Exterior lines by naval architect Gregory Marshall and a complete interior refit.

A favorite material or product discovered during the process: We tried to be as sustainable as possible and chose a recycled wood paneling. I just love how it looks, and I love telling people about it. Another favorite is the blue metallic paint. Several years before the refit I saw a Riva runabout with a beautiful blue paint finish and I took a photo. When I showed it to the shipyard everyone said it’s a bad idea, don’t do it. However, I ignored them and said it’s my boat—if I don’t like it, I will repaint it. Today it’s the No. 1 thing that people compliment the boat on. There were several times I ignored the shipyard and I’m very happy I did.

“In the end, it was an extremely rewarding process for me, and I will definitely do it again,” owner Stephen Sidwell said of the renovation.

Unexpected expense:   I didn’t really have any surprises because I used the boat for about six months prior to the refit and knew the boat well, and I stayed on top of the budget and timeline with good project management. However, the big surprise came on the final day of the refit while we were having a launch party for all of the people who had worked on the boat. While tied to the dock I was giving a quick speech and thank you when “bang!” (it sounded like an explosion in the engine room). A 30-foot sailboat hit us midship on our starboard side with his bow pulpit and anchor! Insurance covered the costs—about $175,000—and we had to be hauled out again and the entire starboard side repainted because you can’t patch metallic paint.

Total cost of the renovation: A few million dollars.

After months of bombing, Russia starts rebuilding Mariupol

The reconstruction plan, due for completion in 2035, aims to support the narrative that moscow has saved the russian-speaking population from ukrainian discrimination.

For 80 days between February and May, the Russian army besieged the city of Mariupol. Artillery and shelling leveled most of the buildings in this coastal city on the Azov Sea. Mariupol is a key hub linking the Crimea peninsula, which Russia illegally annexed in 2014, with eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk regions, a declared target of Putin’s invasion. In September 2022, Russia declared it was annexing the occupied territories, including Mariupol.

Ukrainian authorities say that during the Russian siege, at least 25,000 residents of this city died out of a pre-war population of 430,000. The United Nations has confirmed the deaths of about 1,350 residents, but admitted this is a partial count and that there are “ probably thousands more dead .” Tens of thousands more fled or were sent out of Ukraine. About 90% of the buildings were damaged or razed by the attacks.

Now that the city is under its control, Russia has begun a reconstruction plan. In just six months, the Kremlin has built new homes in this destroyed city: a dozen apartment buildings with room for about 2,500 people now stand on Kuprina Street, southwest of the city. The following images, captured by the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-2 satellite, show how the land changes from a vacant lot in June to a residential complex in December.

The construction of new homes is part of Moscow’s master plan for rebuilding Mariupol, first revealed by Russian website The Village in August. The document, signed by the Unified Institute for Land Planning of the Russian Federation, is planning the construction of 8,750,000 square meters of housing by 2035, including some prefabricated units. Crews have also started to demolish the dilapidated buildings.

Aerial view of the apartments built by Russia on Kuprina Street last September. Source: News of Donbass.

The housing complexes, built by the Russian Ministry of Defense, have a playground, parking and an area for sports. The more than 1,000 units have been delivered free of charge to the population. In front of these blocks there stands a veritable cemetery of shelled buildings destroyed by bombs, projectiles and shrapnel. In the first month of the siege alone, Russian shelling and street-to-street fighting caused the destruction of at least 365 buildings, according to an analysis by UNOSAT, the United Nations satellite center. In that period of time, according to the same source, three hospitals and seven schools, among other places, were bombed.

yachting house

For Luis Velasco-Martínez, a professor of contemporary history at the University of Vigo in Spain, what Russia is trying to do with this reconstruction effort is to “legitimize its actions after it initiated the invasion, but also to legitimize the local and regional governments that have been set up in the region.” Russian president Vladimir Putin justified the invasion out of the “need to denazify” Ukraine and bring it back under Moscow’s wing. “He has focused his efforts on disseminating the narrative that the eastern regions of Ukraine are ethnically and linguistically Russian and its population is mostly pro-Russian or directly Russian, but now he must prove it and try to ensure that the inhabitants of those regions uphold that narrative too,” he explains.

Moscow’s reconstruction plan will grant preference to housing, reconstructing the old town, developing the downtown area and the park, creating an extensive transportation infrastructure, and reconverting the Azovstal steelworks plant – where Ukrainian forces made their final stand – into an industrial and technology park.

Rebuilding the historic city center

On March 16, missiles hit Mariupol’s Drama Theater. The attack caused hundreds of deaths and injuries. Amnesty International defines it as a war crime, accusing Russia of knowing that civilians were sheltering there. That same theater is now covered with a screen, and Russian authorities, who have been in control of the city since May, are rebuilding the demolished building, along with the square in front of it.

img-before

Almost all the buildings in the old town were damaged by the shelling, according to data from Masae Analytics, a geospatial analysis consultancy. Now the Russian government is proposing to rebuild several of the iconic buildings there as well.

“Let’s not forget that Russia annexed the occupied territories in September 2022, Mariupol included,” notes Salvador Sánchez Tapia, a professor of conflict analysis and international security at the University of Navarre. This means that to Russia, this city is an integral part of its own territory. Located just 40 kilometers from the Russian border, Mariupol is a port on the Azov Sea that is crucial to Russian supply lines.

In addition, the reconstruction itself has a high symbolic value, even more so when the city was devastated and emptied out. Around 440,000 people resided there before the invasion, and it is estimated that only a quarter of its population remained after the capture of the city. Tens of thousands of people died, while others fled or were sent out of Ukraine.

Why Mariupol?

In Mariupol, Russian is the mother tongue of about 90% of the inhabitants, so it is a place where it makes sense to start to show the Russian-speaking population the point of the invasion, argues Salvador Sánchez: “The city was devastated, and if Russia wants to present itself as a liberator, the first thing it must do is return the city back to ‘normal’.

The reconstruction plan, due to take place between now and 2035, aims to reflect the narrative that Russia has saved the Russian-speaking population from Ukrainian discrimination and perpetuate its legacy in Mariupol.

An Associated Press investigation based on videos and testimonies on the ground suggests that this reconstruction is a pretext to hide the war crimes that Russia committed eight months earlier by attacking a theater in full knowledge that hundreds of civilians were sheltering inside.

Couple who live on a yacht admit it's not all plain sailing

  • Laura, 43, and Ross Colledge, 39, from Cornwall ditched their regular jobs
  • READ MORE:  I quit my job as a midwife to become an interiors influencer after turning my magnolia cottage into a pastel pink paradise

A British couple have packed in their overworked schedules to live on a 42ft yacht -but it's not all plain sailing.

Having grown tired of their 9-5s, Laura, 43, and Ross Colledge, 39, from Cornwall, decided to sell their house and splashed out on a £100,000 yacht.

For the last five years, the pair have been sailing around the Greek islands with their two sons, nine-year-old Noah and Josh, 12, who are unconventionally schooled.

After buying their 2005 Bavaria 42 yacht in 2018, the couple began darting between Newquay and Plymouth to sharpen their boating skills, and since ended up further afield.

But the bold move has not come without struggles with Laura admitting: 'Sailing life is very changeable so getting a work/life balance is tricky. Maintaining any kind of routine is a challenge.

'You have to be able to "go chameleon" when the weather or other circumstances demand a change of plan'.

She added that it can take its toll on relationships too, saying: 'Sailing life is a 24/7 pressure cooker at times and you not only have to learn to pick your battles, but also where you will and will not compromise.'

That said, the couple would not swap their new lifestyle for the world after becoming disillusioned with the hectic pace of life in the UK.

Laura and Ross, who are directors of Sailing Holly Blue on YouTube and BoatFit Online Health and Fitness Coaching, decided to take the leap after reevaluating their lives.

The former PT and online coach said Ross was working in excess of 50 hours a week as a partner in a fire installation company.

'We were like ships in the night,' she said. 'Ross felt our children's formative years were slipping away before our eyes and he was missing so much.

'We wanted to be able to better meet Josh's extra educational needs, as he has ADHD and is suspected high-functioning autistic, while providing them with an exciting, adventurous, non-consumerist upbringing that would make them more worldly'.

'Ross remortgaged our newly-renovated house and took a gamble on a boat we'd stepped on and loved a few months earlier, when we were just browsing marinas.

'We have both been water babies as surfers and kayakers in Newquay for many years so the ocean has always drawn us in.'

The plan was for Laura to fly to Cyprus with the boys while Ross began a three-month sail to meet them from the UK.

Ross said: 'Laura has fibromyalgia, which is a Central Nervous System condition triggered by stress, so we originally wanted an ocean-based life to be healthier on the whole.

'But while Laura and the boys were in Cyprus she experienced a massive flare-up due to the stress of leaving our old life and me navigating dangerous seas.

'She had to spend a couple of weeks in hospital'.

In the end, the couple changed their plan and decided to meet in Greece in June 2019 so they could be back together sooner.

They fell in love with the country and never left.

Laura said: 'We started our journey as a family in Mykonos. We sailed through the Aegean and Dodecanese Islands and eventually came to find a slower pace of sailing life here in the Ionian Islands'.

Over the course of their five-year adventure, Laura and Ross have upgraded and renovated their yacht.

She continued: 'Some of it has been self-funded but most of it has been through collaborations with our channel and social media accounts.

'We have completed numerous upgrades to improve our living experience. We've included solar power, lithium ion batteries, a watermaker and other mod-cons that mean we can live completely off grid, utility bill-free and self-sufficient if we choose'.

Ross is captain of the family's boat and Laura is first mate.

Noah is currently homeschooled, while Josh attends an online virtual secondary school.

The family has expanded with addition of their two cats Ronnie and Smidge – whom they adopted while on their travels in Greece.

And their adventure is only just starting.

She added: 'Once we achieve residency here in Greece we plan to spread our wings further afield.

'One day we would love a bigger boat as the boys become teens and we start to run out of room'.

As for their mental health, the mother says there's 'nothing more grounding than being so close to nature and at the mercy of elements.

'All other things become so trivial. And relationship-wise, you will soon learn if the person you are with is your soulmate.

'Your relationship deepens to an incredible level and your respect, as well as admiration for each other strengthens too.

'It's also great to be able to choose who we socialise with and when.

'The boys have friends, young and old, from all over the world.'

Dutch auction house to sell off pro-Russian oligarch's superyacht

Dutch auction house Troowtwijk Auctions will put a superyacht belonging to pro-Russian Ukrainian oligarch Viktor Medvedchuk under the hammer. The funds raised from the sale of the Royal Romance will go toward replenishing Ukraine’s budget, said the Ukrainian government agency, Asset Recovery and Management Agency (ARMA).

The 92.5-meter-long yacht has five stories and a swimming pool on board. It was seized in Croatia in March 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine, and possession was recently transferred to Ukraine. The country chose Troostwijk as the most suitable auction house to sell the yacht.

Viktor Medvedchuk is a businessman and politician placed on the United States sanctions list in 2014 for his role in the annexation of Crimea, NOS reported . According to the U.S. authorities, he is a close friend of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Czech Republic also accused Medvedchuk of a Russian disinformation campaign involving paying off European politicians via a website based in Prague used to spread Russian propaganda.

According to ARMA, the Royal Romance is the first sanctioned asset seized outside Ukraine to be auctioned. Olena Duma of ARMA spoke of a “big victory.”

A Croatian judge approved the Royal Romance’s transfer to Ukraine. The country handed the ship over with the message, “Whoever buys Medvedchuk’s yacht will deal a political blow to the Putin regime and get a place on the pages of world history.”
