What’s the best varnish for your yacht?
Varnishing your yacht is an essential part of its care and maintenance. The benefits are twofold: yacht varnish protects your boat from the elements, while also giving it a beautiful shiny finish. But with so many different yacht and marine varnishes to choose from, it can be difficult to know which one is best for your boat. In this article, we’ll run through some of the most popular types of yacht varnish on the market to help you choose the right option.
What is yacht varnish?
Yacht varnish is an extremely durable solvent-based coating that is designed to protect the wood that yachts are made of and stop it decaying over time. Most varnishes are made up of a penetrating oil, resin and solvent. Although most yacht varnish is applied with a brush, it is possible to buy yacht varnish spray.
Different types of yacht varnish finish
There are many different types of finish to choose from, so you’ll need to know a little about them to decide which is the best yacht varnish for you.
Clear yacht varnish
A clear yacht varnish does what it says on the tin: it will create a transparent, glossy finish that does not alter the colour of the wood it is applied to.
Matt yacht varnish
Using a matt coloured yacht varnish will result in a dull, non-shiny finish that does not reflect light. This can be ideal for hiding flaws or imperfections in wood.
Yacht varnish satin
A satin varnish falls between clear and matt. This type of finish will create a pearl-like sheen, without being overly shiny or reflective.
Yacht varnish brands
There are various brands that produce yacht varnish. Here are a couple of the most popular:
Screwfix yacht varnish
Screwfix is a retailer in the UK that sells a variety of products, including hardware and building supplies. They may carry different brands and types of yacht varnish. Yacht varnish provides resistance to water, UV rays, and other environmental elements. Yacht varnishes often contain additives to enhance their durability and performance in marine conditions.
Ronseal yacht varnish
A durable, long-lasting marine varnish for wood that flexes with the movement of the wood and resists peeling and cracking. This varnish is slightly more pricey than the Screwfix varnish, but gets great reviews. You can buy the Ronseal brand of yacht varnish in B&Q and other retailers.
How to varnish your yacht
Varnishing a yacht is fairly straightforward, if a little time-consuming. First you’ll need to carefully sand down the entire surface that you want to varnish to get it looking smooth. Then use a soft brush to wipe off any excess dust and debris, since you don’t want it getting trapped in the varnish. Finally, use a paintbrush to coat the yacht with varnish. Leave it to dry for the recommended amount of time on the tin, then apply additional coats as required. Always check the instructions of your varnish type, and if unsure consult with an expert before starting.
How long does it take for yacht varnish to dry?
Yacht varnish generally takes 4 – 6 hours to dry, although you should check the instructions for the specific product you’re using. You’ll probably want to do two or three coats of varnish, leaving sufficient drying time in between coats.
Is yacht varnish good for decking?
This depends on the product you choose. Some yacht varnish is suitable for decking, while others are not because they do not have an anti-slip formula.
Is yacht varnish good for floors?
Yacht varnish should not be used as an indoor floor varnish. It is difficult to dry indoors, and contains chemicals that can be toxic if it is not used correctly.
Is yacht varnish safe for animals?
Yacht varnish is solvent-based and contains toxic chemicals, which means it should not be used for varnishing animal enclosures (for example, rabbit hutches or reptile enclosures).
What is yacht varnish used for?
Yacht varnish is used for sealing and protecting wood on boats and yachts. It is also commonly used for outdoor items such as wooden doors, window frames or pergolas.
What type of varnish is yacht varnish?
Yacht varnish is a solvent-based outdoor varnish that is extremely durable. It is usually made up of tung oil and polyurethane resin.
What is the best varnish to use on a boat?
The type of varnish that is best for your boat will depend on the type of wood your boat is made from and the finish you are looking for. Tung oil varnish is a safe bet for most boats, or you may prefer to use a one-part polyurethane varnish for added durability.
What is the difference between yacht varnish and outdoor varnish?
In general, yacht varnish dries quicker and is designed for marine conditions, so it’s likely to be more durable than outdoor varnish. However, yacht varnish is unlikely to have an anti-slip formulation, making it unsuitable for decking around the home.

A guide to online shopping
Throughout the past few years, online shopping has received a lot of attention. The penetration of technology to general public has contributed a lot towards the popularity of it. Now almost all of us have smartphones. We can simply shop for what we need from the smartphones whether that’s Ronseal Clear Satin Yacht varnish 2.5L or a completely different product. The products we order online will be delivered to our doorsteps within a short period of time. Therefore, we don’t need to worry about spending our time and effort to purchase what we want. Even though online shopping brings a lot of convenience, you should have a basic understanding on how to purchase the products that you want without facing any hassle. Then you will be able to experience all the benefits that come along with it as well. This guide on online shopping can provide an excellent assistance to you with that. We will tell you how you need to get started with online shopping and what you should do to stay away from frustration.
Look for a reliable marketplace
The first thing you need to do when you shop online is to look for a reliable marketplace. You will be able to find a large number of online stores. Even though those stores provide the products that you want to buy, you cannot expect all of them to provide you with a top-notch service. Hence, it is important for you to understand what the reliable marketplaces are and what will provide you with a compromised service. By going through online reviews about marketplaces, you will be able to get a better understanding about it.
Read reviews before you purchase
It is a good habit to read reviews before you purchase products from online stores. When you purchase something online, you don’t have the ability to test it in your hands. You will only be able to inspect the product when it comes to your hand. In such a situation, you will have to go through a lot of hassle to return the product and ask for a replacement. In some of the instances, you will not have the option to return the product as well. To overcome such situations, you are encouraged to read customer reviews. Then you will be able to figure out what other people say about the product. With those reviews, you will be able to understand if the product matches with your expectations or not.
Purchase only from trusted retailers
You need to purchase the products that you want from trusted retailers. They provide the best quality products to you. Some of the retailers provide replica products at a lower price tag. You will not be able to use these products as the original ones. You will be wasting your money on such replica products. Therefore, you need to make sure that you stick only to the trusted retailers, who will provide you with the opportunity to get your hands on the best quality products available out there at affordable prices.
Do price comparisons
Ability to save money can be considered as one of the biggest reasons why many people tend to go ahead and shop online. But this doesn’t mean that you should blindly purchase the first product that you come across in an online store. You need to do price comparisons by selecting few products. Then you will be able to analyze the features of the products and the prices. The time you spend on these price comparisons can provide you with outstanding results in the long run. Along with price comparisons, you need to do product comparisons as well. Then you will be able to save a lot of time. It will be a more convenient and an effective experience for you. As you would have seen earlier, Ronseal Clear Satin Yacht varnish 2.5L is available to buy at a really low price from B & Q at the moment, at just £39.
Read the product descriptions
By reading the product descriptions, you will be able to get a better understanding about what the product offers you. Then you can match it with the expectation that you have in your mind. If the product doesn’t match with your expectations, you are encouraged to look for an alternative product. If you don’t read the product description, you will figure out that the product doesn’t match with your expectations, only after you get it to your hands. You shouldn’t wait for that to happen. Therefore, you are strongly encouraged to read product descriptions and figure out that it is the product that you need to purchase.
Figure out what shipping options are available
If you want a product to be delivered to your doorstep within two days, you shouldn’t order it with an economy shipping option. Instead, you need to select express shopping. This is something that you need to be mindful when shopping for the goods you need online. You need to check the delivery options available. Usually, the online stores tend to advertise all the shipping options available for you to consider. In addition, you will be able to see the delivery dates as well. You need to select the most appropriate option out of these. Then you will be able to get what you order to your hands in a timely manner.
Deeply take a look at the product images
You should never ignore the product images that you can see when you are ordering products online. The product images will provide you with a clear view of what you are getting. Since you are not getting the chance to see the product when you order online, you need to take a look at these images and make sure that it matches with your expectations. If there are videos, you are strongly encouraged to take a look at them. Then you will be able to analyze the product from various dimensions and angles.

I know it must have been talked about many times but please bare with me. I need to stain and varnish new wooden parts on my boat and learnt from my usual chandler that international no longer make stain and varnish combined, only straight varnish. What would you recomend, a stain and varnish combines , like Ronseal or special stain and varnish separately. Richard

Coloron woodstains are OK on bare wood to get it all the same colour before varnishing. You may need to experiment to get a colour you like, but the stain is relatively cheap. I have a choice of about six colours and do trial bits to help choose the most appropriate. For internal work I then use Ronseal polyurethane satin varnish which is easy to apply and gives a good long lasting finish for very little effort. If you strive for perfection (and you have time and money to spare) Epifanes with rubbed finish for the final coats does give a better finish. Externally would not bother with all that hard work, but use Sikkens Novatec/top porous woodstain which you can have blended with a colouring. The lighter tints allow the grain to show and give an even colour, but not a gloss finish. Great thing though is that it is extremely durable and cheap and easy to apply and touch up.

The stain is called Colron and made by Sterling Roncraft. It is a spirit based wood dye which you rub into the bare wood. I have just used it to blend in some mouldings with the dark sapele in my Bavaria. Had my supply for years, but think you can still get it in B&Q. The varnish is Ronseal Tough Coat clear satin polyurethane - again B&Q. Satin is better in the inside as it is really difficult to get a good finish with standard high gloss yacht varnish and every imperfection shows. The satin finish is softer and warmer - to me, anyway, but it is a matter of taste. Most production boat interiors use a non gloss finish because of the difficulty of getting a perfect gloss finish without a huge amount of work and a good clean environment to work in.

How to Seal Acrylic Paint on Plastic – In 5 Easy Methods
Crafting activities bring about a sense of achievement. It is also essential to preserve these precious pieces of art. Plastic crafts are in trend, but they tend to lose their color easily. So you might look for a permanent solution to preserve them.
Acrylic paints are not suitable for applying on plastic. But there is an easy way to make them long-lasting on your plastic crafts. That way is sealing the paint with an appropriate topcoat.
So, want to know how to seal acrylic paint on plastic? We cannot guarantee a permanent paint job, but we can surely guide you in making acrylic paint last longer on plastic. Let’s get crafty!
Table of Contents:=>
1: Use Polycrylic for Crystal Clear Finishing of the Craft:
2: you can choose to apply polyurethane for durability:, 3: acrylic polymer varnish for outdoor crafts and furniture:, 4: acrylic resin varnish is better for detailed crafts:, 5: use mod podge to seal acrylic paint:, how to use mod podge to seal acrylic paint on the plastic surface, how to use primer for acrylic paint on plastic, which types of finish are best to use for acrylic paint on plastic, benefits of sealing acrylic paint:, conclusion:, 5 methods to seal acrylic paint on plastic:.
There are several ways you can seal plastic crafts. Acrylic paints are little particles of plastic suspended in a solvent. They are self-sealant, so there is hardly any need for another sealer. But you can go a few extra miles to protect the paint because plastic surfaces need extra protection.
Hence, we will discuss few methods that can make acrylic paint long-lasting on plastic.
Polycrylic is a brand name of a water-based protective paint sealer. It is produced using polyacrylate along with polyurethane. The topcoat is available in high gloss, semi-gloss, matte, and ultra-flat sheens. It is suitable for indoor projects mainly.
# Spray on polycrylic:
The spray polycrylic finish is fast drying, crystal clear coat which does not yellow or darkens over time. It is less durable than polyurethane but clearer. The polycrylic spray formula lays evenly on the plastic surface. You can easily apply thin layers of the polycrylic finish and let it dry for 2 hours. Then apply 2 or 3 more coats to finish the project.

# Roll on polycrylic:
Using a roller or brush to apply the finish gives you more control over the application. The formula is the same as the spray finish.
Polyurethane is more durable than polycrylic. But the water-based polyurethane gives a yellowish tone after drying. It can alter the color output you want from your craft. You can brush on the formula same as the polycrylic roll-on method.
Polycyclic and polyurethane are self-leveling and are appropriate for big projects like toy cars, figurines, outdoor furniture, flowerpots, and many more.
Acrylic polymer varnishes are available in matte, gloss, and satin. Satin is something between matt and gloss, so pick carefully. Here’s something to be noted;
Satin is the top choice of experienced crafters and DIYers. It seals acrylic paint and is made for that purpose. The acrylic polymer varnish is formulated with UV protection which protects the projects from discoloring.

Acrylic resin varnish is very strong and durable. It is used in small projects requiring stiff and strong surface protection like costars, jewelry beads e.t.c. The finish is glossy and shiny that doesn’t become cloudy after a thick coat.
Mod podge is a diluted permanent white glue with medium toughness, suitable as a top coat on acrylic paint. The glue also acts as a top coat on plastic crafts.
First, choose the type of finish you want for your project. It may be matte or glossy. Mod podge gloss luster will have a glossy finish. So it depends on the final look you desire, which type of glue you will use.
Here is a step-by-step application guide if you want to use Mod podge as a topcoat on your craft. Let’s check it out:
Step 1. Painting the plastic:
You have to apply more than one coating of paint to make it permanent. However, several thin coatings are better than one thick coat. So take your time to paint the project.
Put on the color with even strokes. The brush should be fine and has soft bristles, so the paint looks sleek. Now let the paint dry for the topcoat.
Step 2. Coating the plastic:
Choose a brush that you will not use for painting because it will become stiff if you use it for applying glue. So use a brush that is specified for glue application.
Don’t use a worn-out brush because it will apply glue unevenly. But when you apply the glue, the layer needs to be even. Patchy layers will dry with a texture that the craftsman did not intend. It is not self-leveling. So meticulously apply the sealing coat.
Take the glue with the brush and apply it to the painted surface. Be sure to check and confirm that the paint is dry. If the paint is still damp, the mod podge application will smear it, and your entire project will be ruined.
The coatings need to be light. Heavy coatings will not dry as fast. Therefore, two or more light coatings are better than one heavy coat.
Step 3. Drying:
It will take 15 to 20 minutes to dry the thin layer. When the coat is dry to the touch, add subsequent layers. For long-lasting results, add more than one coat.
Don’t hang up the project or use it until it’s been dry for 24 hours. For Hard Coat, we recommend letting it dry the project for 72 hours.
Because a hard coat is typically for furniture, you will have to wait for 72 hours before placing anything on the furniture. Mod podge is preferable to use with acrylic paints rather than latex paints, as it makes the latex paint formula bubble up.
Its coatings are good for toys, bottles, plastic furniture, and flower pots. Besides, it helps prevent scratches on the paint surface. Mod podge also protects the paint from chipping and darkening over time.
Preparation is the key. Peeling will occur if you don’t prepare the plastic surface properly. As a result, it will increase the adhesion of the paint on the plastic surface.
The preparation involves sanding, cleaning, and priming. This will help you create a lasting craft project.
What happens when if you skip preparation?
In case you skip preparation of the plastic surface, the paint does not adhere to the plastic. If you apply a primer before painting, it helps with the adhesion. Yet it is not enough because, after some time, the paint peels off.
Preparation:
The proper way of preparing the plastic surface for acrylic painting is by making the surface rough. However, most of the plastic surface you will work with will be smooth and deburred.
Paint or primer will not stick to this surface. Instead, you have to sand the surface with fine-grit 200 to 220 sandpaper, or you can also use Scotch Brite pads to make the outer layer grainy.
Then wipe the dust away from the surface with a clean cloth. The surface should not have any dust.
Finally, to clean off any leftover oil or dirt, use mineral spirit or isopropyl alcohol with a cotton pad.
Applying primer:
Now it is time for the primer application. There is some research necessary before you apply a primer on plastic. It should be compatible with the type of material you are working on. Therefore read the labels and choose a primer that can stick to different types of plastic surfaces.
As you may know, primer formula should be specially formulated for plastic surfaces. This primer will establish a foundation that helps the paint stick.
Apply the spray primer evenly on the clean and dry plastic surface. You have to consistently hold the can at the same distance from the craft.
To avoid pooling in one spot, you have to keep moving it. The primer will conceal different colors of the plastic that will affect the tone of your acrylic paint.
It will create a blank canvas for the acrylic colors to pop. Let the primer dry completely, then apply paint.
It depends on the project you are working on which type of finish you will use. Earlier, we saw different methods and different types of sealers for plastic; they have different outputs.
You can weigh the advantages and drawbacks of these sealants and decide. But our honest opinion is to seal the acrylic paint with an acrylic sealer. Acrylic finishes have more sheen options and are long-lasting.
The sealing coat provides protection to the paint. It protects from scratches, dirt build-up, and UV rays that darken the paint when the project is kept outside.
Also, handling causes friction to rub off paint from places where it is touched often. The topcoat also prevents paint smudge and peeling. It makes the finishing look glossy and bright. But you can adjust the final texture according to your wish. So seal your acrylic paint on plastic with an appropriate sealant.
Question: What is the best method to Keep Paint on Plastic Surfaces Permanently?
Answer: There is a saying that nothing lasts forever, but you can follow some procedures to make the paint last longer. The method is sanding, cleaning, painting, and, last but not least is sealing. Also, there is a golden rule of thin and multiple layers. Don’t do one or two thick layers.
Question: What Kind of Paint & Sealer to Use on Plastic Cups?
Answer: The best paint for plastic cups is acrylic paint because it is versatile. You can paint details with thick paint or airbrush whole cups with a thinner version of it.
A recent formula is specially formulated for plastic called “Paint for plastic,” which adheres to plastic easily. For sealers, you can use crystalac , which is FDA compliant in terms of food safety.
Question: What types of paint & Sealer to use on plastic craft projects & ornaments?
Answer: Because acrylic paint is bright and versatile, you can apply it to ornaments and plastic crafts. In addition, you can seal the acrylic paint with Acrylic polymer varnish or acrylic resin.
It is a great idea to upcycle old plastic so you can incorporate them into your crafts. The DIY projects help the environment by lessening plastic waste and making decorations for your home. It’s a win-win situation!
Don’t throw away plastic furniture and toys that lost their original color. Instead, repurpose them and seal them with a suitable sealer for acrylic paints on plastic which will last for years.
