Jeff Bezos’s sail-powered green superyacht is shadowed by a diesel-guzzling tender
Jeff Bezos’s Koru was built to be the world’s largest sailing yacht, a $500 million testament to wind-powered luxury. At 417 feet, this three-masted marvel promises guilt-free travel for the eco-conscious billionaire. But here’s the catch: Koru comes with a 250-foot diesel-powered support ship, the Abeona , hauling everything the green sailing yacht can’t carry.
Why does a sailboat need a diesel tender boat ? Start with the helicopter problem.
The Koru yacht’s three masts may catch the wind beautifully, but they make landing a chopper impossible. And when you’re making over $18k a minute, you can’t waste a second being ferried to your boat. So Abeona steps in, offering a helipad and storage hangar for Bezos’s Airbus ACH-135. But that’s not all.
The support vessel also carries a mini armada of water toys, extra supplies, and crew quarters for 45 staff. This leaves Koru ’s interior free for its nine cavernous guest cabins and all the luxuries a centibillionaire could want.
And Abeona doesn’t skimp on power. Its 6,092 horsepower diesel engines give it the muscle to shadow Koru wherever it goes. Cruising speed? A brisk 15 knots. Range? 5,000 nautical miles. While Koru catches wind in its 20,000-square-foot sails, Abeona burns through enough diesel to keep the adventure rolling. That’s gallons of irony per nautical miles.
The Koru yacht disvoers conflict teak is a thing
The contradictions don’t stop there. Koru ’s decks are lined with teak wood, prized on yachts for its durability and cool touch underfoot. Unfortunately, reports revealed this teak came from Myanmar, where logging has led to widespread deforestation and human rights concerns. The Dutch shipbuilder Oceanco faced a $158,000 fine for failing to trace the timber’s origin. While teak has long been favored for yachts, its sourcing casts a shadow over Koru ’s environmental aspirations.
From its reliance on fossil-fueled support to its controversial decking, Koru showcases the complexities of green luxury. Sailing might seem like a step toward sustainability, but this superyacht duo proves even eco-conscious billionaires can’t resist a little extravagance. But for Bezos, embracing the paradox of modern sailing might just be part of the adventure.

Jeff Bezos built a $75,000,000 boat to travel with his $500,000,000 super yacht for one specific reason
The multi-billionaire has put his custom-made boat to good use.
When you're one of the richest people in the world, you can do pretty much anything you want.
Within reason - usually.
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos , who has a net worth of $230 billion , has made some extravagant purchases over the years - and understandably so.
He has a fleet of private jets as well as a car collection worth an estimated $20 million, including high-end vehicles like a Ferrari Pininfarina Sergio, W Motors' Lykan HyperSport and Bugatti Veyron Mansory.
But it appears as though it's Bezos' luxury $500,000,000 super yacht that's his pride and joy.
Named Koru, Bezos first commissioned the bespoke boat in 2018, with Netherlands-based yacht-builder Oceanco beginning the build in 2021.
The 127 meter-long (417 foot) vessel was finally put into action by Bezos in April 2023.
And it's got some sentimental meaning too; it was the very place he proposed to now-fiancee Lauren Sanchez last May.
Sanchez, who had been dating Bezos since 2019, admitted to Vogue she 'blacked out a bit' when Bezos opened the ring box.
But the pair have kept tight-lipped about their wedding details, as Sanchez previously told Extra: “We’re still thinking about it. Is it going to be big? Overseas? We don’t know yet."
Bezos went on to have another boat built to accompany Koru for one specific reason.
This time he ordered from Dutch boat makers Damen Yachting.
Named Abeona, after the Roman goddess of travelers, the 76 meter (250 foot) support vessel is still bigger than your average yacht.
It has space for some water toys on deck and can accommodate up to 45 crew and support staff.
But Abeona's crowning jewel is its rear-deck helipad and hangar, which is large enough to fit an Airbus ACH135 helicopter.
Because why wouldn't you want a spot to park your $5.7m helicopter while you unwind on a Mediterranean getaway?
Bezos forked out another $75 million on the support boat, as you do, meaning he's spent almost $600 million on both his yachts.
That's not even taking into account their maintenance and docking fees, which are also pretty hefty.
It would cost around $40 million a year to maintain and dock Koru, while you're looking at around $10 million a year for Abeona.
This means Bezos spends around $50 million a year purely on running his boats.
But when you're the second-richest man in the world, as per the Forbes billionaire index, then that figure is nothing more than a drop in the ocean...
