A Voyage to South Africa with Landyachtz
Exploring the world through skateboarding is something that Landyachtz has embraced for years. This sense of exploration began early on and centered around road trips with friends in search of that feeling you get while skating a newly discovered hill for the first time. We feel that skateboards can take you places, enhance your fun factor and open the door for journeys you wouldn’t otherwise go on. Heading to South Africa isn’t your everyday vacation, and for the crew it turned into an unforgettable adventure and an opportunity to skate a country not often skated. – Nate Schumacher
Concrete Wave – How did the idea for this tour come about? Adam Yates -The idea came about during a small chat that I had with Tom Edstrand, one of the owners at Landyachtz, back in the middle of 2013. I first traveled to an international downhill event; Hot Heels, all the way back in 2003. I had the pleasure of traveling with him, Darryl Freeman, Yogi Baumann and Steve Daddow for a period of a few weeks. During this time it became clear to me that I wanted to represent Landyachtz someday in my future and that the future was looking like it was going to focus heavily around skateboarding. The people that I met and the experiences that I had in South Africa back in 2003 were just too good to be a one-off.
After a decade passed, I was fortunate and very privileged to be sponsored by Landyachtz and the opportunity arose that I could potentially revisit the scene where it all began for me. I’ve been appointed the international team and marketing manager at Landyachtz for 2014 and this was to be my first task for the year; organize a trip with seven team members to South Africa for a Skate and Explore tour like no other. The goal of the trip was to generate a strong Landyachtz presence and get more people on skateboards, turning wheels. It’s always been about the stoke and giving back to communities that support our brands! We also had two new team riders to expose to the country and the world.
Did you guys end up finding any local rippers? Because South Africa is so massive the stoke spreads a massive 2800km, between Cape Town and Durban. Two completely different scenes both in style and age. Cape Town has a reputation of being the birthplace of racers and can date back to early 2000 with names like Stuart Bradburn and Mike Zietsman. Durban has a lot of different terrain; urban, parks and plenty of downhill. The scene here is only around two or three years old, and they already have a massive presence in the freeride scene and also are becoming super competitive in the downhill events. In Cape Town, we have Alex Meyers. His chill attitude changes when he gets on a skateboard. He turns into a machine that does things at one pace, FAST. He’s proven to be a racer as well, taking top spots on podiums at a few of the past downhill events. In Durban we have Dylan de Fleuriot. This guy is very calculated and likes to break things down to their simplest forms. He oozes style with his flailing limbs. He’s always on the hunt to expose new terrain and adds variety to the growing scene. We are stoked to have these guys on the team, representing us there in South Africa.
Were you doing a lot of filming? Was this for documentary? When we do these Skate and Explore tours we try and get the most out of them. Documenting is a massive part of what we aim to achieve with these trips. Shooting for future advertisements, product videos, and R&D on new equipment, all can be captured and used as we need it. The video that comes post tour will only continue to spread the stoke long after we have left! It’s another way Landyachtz likes to give back to the communities we visit; documenting their people, their culture, their country, and exposing it all for the world to see! There is plenty of kickback as a result of having both a videographer and a photographer in the van. After all, on this specific Skate and Explore tour, we are visiting Mother Africa. Who knows, Bricin might have felt the need to take on a bull elephant, you’ll just have to watch Guffs edit!
What did you think of the skate scene in SA? The scene in South Africa is growing at a rapid pace. The different communities get behind each other and support the local scenes by hosting a heap of different events. There is so much going on for all types of skaters. They hold get-togethers once a week for beginners as an introduction into skateboarding, teaching the basics in a safe controlled environment. They have slide jams that follow the same style as international slide events with kickers and rails being incorporated into urban downhill runs. The local group SAGRA (South African Gravity Racers Association) holds international events that draw the big names to South Africa each year including the final event on the current 2014 IDF calendar, Hot Heels, which has been around for over 10 years. There are retail outlets popping up in most of the main cities or towns where there’s a need for skate gear. These shops offer a spot for the locals to come, hang out and spend their money, then hit the hills. Local manufacturers are also increasing in number. Precision truck, board, and bushing companies are supporting locals by supplying them with locally built and designed products. The people of South Africa are very passionate about looking after Mother Africa and her people.
Any final comments? Thanks to Landyachtz for the opportunity to revisit such an amazing place and share the emotions and memories with my buddies, both new and old. To the people that made our Skate and Explore tour possible, thank you! There are so many people that have helped in so many ways, and, true to the way that the skate family is around the world, accommodated and welcomed us with open arms as their own. I thank you all, for the chance to learn a little more about you as a community.

Tugboat vs ATV vs Dinghy: A Landyachtz Buyers Guide
Dinghy vs tugboat vs atv.
Source: Youtube, Landyachtz
There are three rad boards in the Landyachtz line up that frequently are pitted against each other for the next spot in your skateboard arsenal: The Dinghy, ATV and Tugboat.
Let’s take a look at all three and find which one best suits your needs.
The Dinghy is Landyachtz’s OG mini cruiser. It was first released as a tiny little old school board and has since grown to be readily available in 10+ graphics.
The board is small, measuring about 28” long with a 8” width. Beginners can certainly learn on it, but those looking for a super stable platform might look elsewhere. This smaller size makes it the most portable and easiest to carry of the bunch.
Source: Youtube, Landyachtz
Tricks are easily done on the Dinghy if you are a more experienced skateboarder. We’ve seen riders tre flip it! However, we can’t really recommend trying to learn tricks on this board for first timers.
Parts Spec:
Source: Youtube, Ogden Sike l
You should get the Dinghy if :
Don’t get the Dinghy if:
❌ You are a “bigger” rider or have large feet ❌ Are looking to skate long distances ❌ Want to primarily learn tricks
The Tugboat is essentially the bigger brother of the Dinghy. It has a bit more of an old school vibe with the wider width. Riders with larger feet need look no further.
The Tugboat comes in at 30” length and 9” width. Though it is wider, in terms of length it is still quite small - this means it will be portable and easy to carry around like any other mini cruiser.
Source: Youtube, Shred Shack
Flip tricks are going to be more difficult on this board due to the width.
Wider trucks come on the Tugboat to match the increased width. This makes the board feel more stable overall.
Parts Spec:
Note: Parts are subject to change per Landyachtz
You should buy the Landyachtz Tugboat if :
Don’t buy the Tugboat if:
❌ If you’re looking for a board to skate 6+ miles with ❌ You want the smallest mini cruiser available ❌ You’re looking to mostly learn tricks.
The Landyachtz ATV is the hybrid of the group. The ATV has a nose and tail, making it the best board here for doing tricks, cruising, and freeride.
ATVs are the biggest of the three, making them the most stable but least portable. However, that extra length gives you a nice big nose for tricks.
Source: Youtube, Todd Rocheford
To make things extra confusing, there is also the ATV X. The ATV X Substitutes two layers of Canadian Maple for 2 layers of fiberglass for a longer lasting board without the added weight.
You should grab the ATV if:
✅ You want a cruiser board you can learn tricks on ✅ You are looking for a board that is comfortable ✅ Want a hybrid cruise/freeride board
Avoid the ATV if:
❌ You want a super portable board ❌ You want a mini cruiser (this is a full size skateboard)
Comparing the Tugboat, Dinghy & ATV
Here are some common questions that we get with regards to which board to get.
Which one is best for sliding?
Generally the ATV is the best for sliding because it is bigger and gives you more control. However, all these boards come with wheels that come sandstone ground for easy slides right away. The difficult part will be learning on the smaller decks.
Which one is best for downhill?
We cannot recommend any of these for serious downhill.
Which one is best for tricks?
The ATV with the large nose is generally better for tricks.
Can you go offroad with the boards?
Yes, to some extent! The large and soft wheels of about 60-63mm gives these boards the ability to be taken rougher roads than a normal skateboard.
Which board is the fastest?
None of these boards are going to be “fastest” and it will largely come down to the road and the rider.
How can I upgrade these boards?
All Landyachtz completes come with great components out of the box. However, the first couple of personalizations we would recommend are bearings, wheels, and trucks in that order. Check out Dragon BUILT Bearings for a nice first upgrade.
What alternatives / competitive boards are out there?

Who are Landyachtz Longboards?
Landyachtz is a longboarding company hailing from Kimberly BC. They’ve been in the game since the early 2000s, and have slowly grown themselves into one of the biggest longboard brands.
Though you might know them for the famous Landyachtz Dinghy, Landyachtz have their roots planted in downhill skateboard racing. They’ve brought some of that racing competitiveness into the cruiser world, and have by far the most diverse and extensive options of cruisers of any other brand. Landyachtz do not play around.
In terms of quality, Landyachtz does not disappoint. Though they make a ton of their boards in China (with some made at the Berkley factory in Kimberly, BC), they’re all of high-quality. Outsourcing the manufacturing also allows them to price their boards competitively, and sell them at an affordable price point.

Explore the world, or your neighborhood, on a skateboard.
Pack your bags, grab your board and hit the road, Skate and Explore came from weekend road trips with friends. We’d load up the van and go on an adventure, exploring little towns across B.C Canada, camping or crashing in cheap motels. We always brought skateboards on these trips. A skateboard turned stopping for gas into a quick game of skate or a spontaneous session on a little three stair. We’d plan our road trip routes by looking for big rural mountain roads to bomb and make sure we didn’t miss the gnarliest alpine passes. You could feel the excitement in the van as we pulled over and started grabbing our downhill gear, taking turns shuttle driving so everyone gets at least one bomb. A skateboard made 12 hours in a van feel like an adventure. We were out on the road as much as possible.
Skate and Explore evolved over the years. We started traveling by plane to explore other parts of the world, visiting local skate scenes, crews and shops. Our team took the Skate and Explore ethos all over the globe. They touched down in Australia, South Africa, Eastern Europe, Taiwan, Korea, China, the Southern States and Eastern Canada...to name a few. When you travel with a skateboard you meet other people who share your passion and you instantly have something in common, no matter what culture or language you speak. The global skate community welcomes you with open arms. They show you their spots, take you to their house parties and bring you to the best local food spots. Our team arrives home from these trips with crazy stories and new friendships that know no borders.
There’s a certain connection you get to your surroundings when you have a skateboard under your feet, you look at your city in a different way. You don’t have to plan a weekend road trip or get on a plane to Skate and Explore. The amazing thing about skateboarding is you can simply grab your board and leave your front door, exploring your own neighborhood. You’ll discover things about your own neighborhood and find cool spots to come back to. You may even meet other skaters out exploring their neighborhoods, many of our friendships have been formed over a common love of skateboarding.
We’ve documented these trips and are proud to share our Skate and Explore adventures with you! Below you’ll find our favorite trips and we’d encourage you to watch them and hope they inspire you to bring a skateboard on your next adventure.

eastern europe
EASTERN EUROPE - 2016
Eastern Europe isn't always the first place on someone's travel itinerary. Major conflict in the 90s during the Yugoslav Wars gave the Balkans a rough reputation. Abandoned ruins from the war have opened up interesting places to skate, like the 1984 Sarajevo Olympic Bobsled track. But when you look past the war torn buildings you'll see beautiful landscapes, optimistic people, and a region that has bounced back from a dark past. Next door is Romania! Not long ago it was locked off from the rest of Europe. Throw in a revolution at the end of the 80's and you'll find a country with rich culture and people full of pride for their home. Large mountains ranges with some of the most amazing roads ever paved, it's no wonder that the scene in Romania is blowing up!

GERMANY TO MONACO
GERMANY TO MONACO | 2016
Europe is jam packed full of different countries and cultures. This makes for one of the most interesting and biggest Skate & Explore trips yet. The crew starts in the Black Forest of Germany then makes their way down south through the mountains of Italy and along the coast to fancy Monaco. This is only the beginning...

SOUTH KOREA
SOUTH KOREA | 2015
South Korea is a country of transformation. Exporting goods such as electronics, cars, and pop music it has become one of the world's biggest economies. All this development has created an amazing culture that is quite diverse. From the non-stop city of Seoul to the traditional mountain towns, South Korea was an easy choice for our next Skate and Explore adventure.

TAIWAN | 2015
Taiwan is the 4th most mountainous islands in the world. Tropical climate, millions of people, deep history, and some of craziest paved roads you can imagine. Watch as the crew explore the massive city sprawl of Taipei and then venture deep into the countryside mountains where no one has skated before.
SOUTH AFRICA
SOUTH AFRICA | 2014
