New to charter?

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is due at the time of the final charter payment. Under MYBA terms, this sum is usually equivalent to 30 per cent of the total charter fee, but may be up to 40 per cent in some cases.

Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms, such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees and ad hoc incidentals, the APA will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. The Captain will ensure that the yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned when you step on board. While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise. If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, additional cash funds will be required at once.

All outstanding bills from the yacht charter should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before your final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of your charter will be reimbursed to you in full. On request, transfer arrangements to and from the yacht can be made by Burgess or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

Best Time to Visit Greece on a Yacht Charter

If you're looking for a leisurely sail with light winds, late spring and early summer are ideal. The winds are mild, and the sea is calm. It is the perfect time to relax in the sunshine or dive into the refreshing waters. In June, temperatures usually range from 75-85 degrees, making exploring the coast pleasant.

1. Choose the right time to visit Greece

Greece’s holiday season is quite long starting in May and finishing in mid-October. If you visit before or after these months, there aren’t so many people around especially on the more popular islands. Mykonos for example doesn’t have many visitors in May so the nightlife isn’t as vibrant than in July or August. If, however you love relaxing in the sun and prefer a quieter vacation, avoid these two months.

2. Take the weather into consideration when planning your holiday

Always check the weather when you decide to take a yacht charter holiday in Greece. It’s usually warm in the early and late season although the sea temperature is a little cooler in early summer. December brings colder weather and cold waters so swimming is out unless you don’t mind being a bit on the chilly side. This month late in the year on the other hand is a good time if you wish to see the culture and history of Greece as it’s fairly quiet. Most yacht owners and charterers prefer to visit the Greek Islands between May and early October, so expect busier times when choosing to sail during these two months.

3. Pack a large suitcase

With around 2,000 Greek islands to choose from it’s a good idea to do a little research about the island or islands you intend visiting - see above. There are historical islands, islands that are sophisticated and islands that are totally uninhabited. You won’t need a huge suitcase of clothes if you’re going to an island that’s underpopulated and you just plan to swim, sunbathe or eat on board your superyacht. All you will need are shorts, T-Shirts and swimming costumes.

However, if you decide to visit islands such as Rhodes, Paros or Mykonos you may need a large suitcase. Dining out in smart restaurants, dancing the night away in clubs or wanting to be part of the jet set means you will probably want many changes of wardrobe. Pack luggage accordingly, taking casual along with elegant clothes to suit all occasions.

4. Throw away the guide book

A guide book isn’t really that necessary if you’re heading to the Aegean Sea on a superyacht charter. Islands in this region are close together and there’s plenty of information elsewhere. With so much info on so many places, it’s an impossible task to read it all so maybe a short summary is the best bet about each place you intend to visit.

Get a general idea of accessibility to certain islands, make sure you can moor in the dock and find out the size of the port. Do a little homework about the nightlife, attractions and the types of beaches to expect. You can then work out an itinerary of the island you prefer to spend time on and where to go, as well as what to see once you’re there.

How about reading some of the more notable books about Greece? The Story of Ulysses or Odysseus, the King of Itheca or Homer’s Odyssey make interesting subjects to get you into the swing of this beautiful country.

The Charter Season & Climate

Like most of the Mediterranean, the Greece yacht chartering season generally runs from April to the end of October. The summer season in July and August is the hottest and tends to have strong Meltemi winds blowing frequently. This is also the high season as far as numbers go. The best time to charter a yacht is probably either of the shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October), each side of the main summer season, as the temperatures are the most comfortable, the wind lighter (yet reliable) and the onshore tourists have yet to arrive or have just left in their largest numbers.

It is in excellent condition. It is rather big, but cozy. We had all the chances for interactive sailing and for the discreet leisure time. We hardly ever went anywhere out of the upper deck, because it was so lovely! The master bedroom was perfect. The idea with two bathrooms is great! I loved the crew. Everyone was welcoming, ready to help and in general they were very pleasant people! Especially the captain and his senior assistant Tasos. We felt as if we were hosted by the family of old friends. Despite the short trip, they shown us lovely places to swim, advised on the island hiking, entertained us with the tender/toys. Food. Majestic! It was the first try for the new chef on Gitana. And he exceeded any expectation! Quality, quantity, the table service ...were impeccable. Your wines arrangement worked very well too! Sailing. We had just two chances to open full sails. But it was great! Otherwise the motor was perfectly sufficient. The boat was remarkably stable while on the go. So, our last minute booking turned out to be a fantastic adventure! Luxury yacht charter in Greece and the Greek Islands

A luxury yacht charter in Greece is the ultimate island-hopping adventure. The chic Cyclades isles of Mykonos and Santorini boast sugar cube villages and attract throngs of well-heeled partygoers, while in the north Aegean Sea , the Sporades have the well-founded monicker of the ‘emeralds of the Aegean’ -and offer exquisite anchorages framed by lush slopes.

The lesser-known but equally magical Saronic islands are conveniently located close to Athens while on the country’s west coast the verdant Ionian islands extend to the southern tip of the Peloponnese with maquis-dotted hills and bright turquoise bays. To the east the Dodecanese unfurl awash with culture and beguiling bays and make an ideal jumping off point for exploring the exotic Turkish coast.

Greece yacht season and weather

Greece has an enviably long season, with blue skies from May to mid-October and summer temperatures averaging 26°C to 30°C. During July and August, the hotspots of Mykonos and Santorini are at their most dazzling and lively. Charter guests in search of a more relaxed vibe should visit in May, September and October, when cruising grounds are quieter and temperatures still delightfully warm.

The two prevailing winds in Greece are the meltemi, which begins in May and reaches its peak around July and August, and the south-easterly sirocco, which is more prevalent during the winter months.

The Cyclades and Aegean islands can experience strong meltemi winds in July and August. Charters in the Aegean are less likely to be affected by the meltemi in May and June and September and October. Though the meltemi blows into the Sporades (usually strongest in August) the islands have good shelter and short hops between islands.

Charters in the Saronic islands and southern Peloponnese are more sheltered from the meltemi. On the west coast, the Ionian islands have predictable wind patterns, making for relaxed cruising. Sheltered from the meltemi, the Ionian can be hot during the peak summer months, as it does not do not benefit from the cooling breezes of the meltemi.

The eastern Mediterranean has a very small tidal range, at one to two feet.

Greece yacht charter itineraries

Athens has several marinas, with Zea Marina accommodating yachts up to 150m. In the Ionian, Lefkas Marina has berths for yachts up to 45 metres and Gouvia Marina in Corfu has berths up to 60 metres. Skiathos Marina accommodates yachts up to 60 metres and Rhodes Marina has moorings for craft up to 120 metres.

The undeniable allure of any Greek charter, however, is the plethora of serene and restful coves, ideal for simply dropping down the hook.

The sheltered islands of the Saronic Gulf , including Poros and unforgettable Hydra, unfurl like stepping stones from Athens, and are sprinkled with Byzantine castles, charming harbours, ancient towns and stunning anchorages.

The Cyclades, considered by many to be the archetypal Greek islands, are home to some of Greece’s top superyacht destinations. Thira (more commonly known as Santorini) is one of the most southerly of the Cyclades, lying approximately 150 nautical miles south-east of Athens, while off-the-beaten track Kea, elegant Syros, and the exclusive Ibiza of Greece, Mykonos , are not to be missed.

Immortalised in Greek legend, the southern peninsula of the Peloponnese lies closer to Athens than much-loved Mykonos, and is a popular haven with Greek royals. Its wild, natural beauty, countless bays and bountiful history combines with lots of outdoor adventure.

Strewn like a necklace of blue-green jewels across the north-western Aegean Sea, the Sporades’ four main inhabited islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros are resplendent with glittering coves ripe for exploration by yacht.

On the west coast of Greece, the seven main islands of the Ionian – Corfu, Paxos, Lefkas, Meganisi, Ithaca, Kefalonia, and Zakynthos (Zante) – boast some of the best beaches in Greece . That impressive number comes from the over 6000 islands and islets scattered like diamonds in the sea, each of them inviting you to swim for hours, socialise while tasting Greece’s well know cuisine and enjoy the beauty of a Greek summer spent next to the waves. Greece is truly a sailor’s paradise .

From our humble beginnings on the island of Kos in 1992 we now offer charters throughout Greece from our 11 main charter bases. There are so many options, and only so much time. The diversity of the different sailing areas in Greece makes picking just one difficult, which is why so many of our guests come back to sail again and again . There is always another beautiful island to visit and another idyllic beach to swim on!

Peak sailing season is from late June through August with hot weather, warm seas and busy islands. Availability can become limited during this period so booking early is essential.

Late spring from May to June and late summer from September to early October are often considered the best time to sail for experienced sailors and repeat visitors to our country. The weather is great and the islands are more relaxed than the busy summer months.

For those who want to live the real Greek way of life, April and October can be rewarding, with less heat, fewer visitors and enticing low-season offers . A few of the restaurants and shops on some islands may not have opened or may have closed for the season, but in our opinion early and late season sailing in Greece is a magical and unique experience .

The Argo Saronic Gulf is actually two gulfs (the Saronic and Argolic ) that are often referred to together in sailing terms given their close distances to each other. The Saronic Gulf lies in between Athens and the coast of the Argolid Peninsula while the Argolic Gulf is one hop over in between the peninsula and the first large leg of the Eastern Peloponnese , which runs all the way south to Monemvasia.

We often recommend this area to first time sailors for a number of practical reasons. First and foremost, it is the easiest area to reach from Athens , which makes it an ideal spot for those arriving via the Athens International Airport. Within a few hours of touching down you can be swimming and relaxing on board having reached your first destination.

Ah, the Cyclades. A name steeped in history that brings the classic image of a Greek island to everyone’s mind. While Greece has many island chains and all of them are unique and magical, the Cyclades has become nearly synonymous with the county as a whole for many visitors.

Characterised by their white houses, rugged landscapes and world famous beaches , the Cyclades attract visitors from around the world and are a must see for everyone at some point in their life. For sailors the area offers a huge variety of routes and islands to visit, from the world famous islands Mykonos and Santorini to the popular Paros and Naxos and many, many more in between.

A note about the Meltemi winds that blow from the north in July and August. In the Cyclades these winds can make for challenging conditions and sailing the area during these times is best for experienced sailors. Don’t despair all you beginner sailors! The Cyclades are reached from our main base in Alimos Marina on the western side of Attica giving quick access to the islands of Kea, Kithnos, Serifos, Sifnos and Milos among others.

Our base in Lavrion is perfect for getting a head start to the islands of Andros, Tinos, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos . The Lavrion base is further south and on the east side of Attica, saving a couple of hours of additional sailing time on your way out. As an added bonus, Lavrion is just half an hour from the Athens International Airport so you can be on your way towards your destination just an hour or two after landing.

Located on the western side of Greece the seven main islands of the Ionian Sea have their own unique charm and character . The Ionian Islands are much greener than most islands in Greece, their location and geography bringing more rainfall during the winter months and allowing trees and shrubs to grow and thrive. The combining of colours between the green of the hills , the white of the sands and the blue of the sea are a special treat for visitors to this area.

The Sporades are the hidden gem on the Greek sailing map . Nestled off the eastern coast of central Greece the main islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros are a beautiful combination of green mountains, sandy and pebble beaches and deep blue seas. Nature plays a staring role here, with the National Marine Park at Alonissos being a significant refuge for the Monachus Monachus or Mediterranean seal .

Sailing conditions in the Sporades are relatively mild, although winds can shift between the day and night requiring some care when mooring. Distances between islands are short allowing a lot of fun to be packed into a week long charter .

Sailing Yachts

Essential Info for Chartering in Greece

Most yachts are based in Athens. The majority of the crewed charter Greece departs from Athens to the Cyclades and the Saronic Gulf. Despite the Cyclades being the most inquired location because of the attractive islands of Mykonos and Santorini, a little research can go a long way for private yacht charters Greece. Firstly, the iconic islands are quite crowded in the peak months and even the limitation of the crew ship numbers hasn’t significantly brought down the visitor numbers to the key islands. The strong Meltemi winds make the journey from Athens a subject of elements, inquire about actually starting in Mykonos and Santorini . As the availability is subject to previous charter ending nearby or ideally in your preferred location, it is advisable to hold the purchase of airline tickets until a boat is secured.

The distances between Greek islands are quite considerable, a crewed motor yacht charter from Athens to Cyclades cruising at 12 knots usually does day hops of 3-4 hours, the time increases for catamarans cruising at ca 6 knots  to 4-6 hours. For this reason, many charters, especially involving first time charters, visit the Saronic Gulf – Hydra, Spetses, Poros. It is possible to cross from the Saronic Gulf to the Cyclades, which is usually done when Meltemi changes the plans of yachts from Athens.

The third most popular crewed charter destination in Greece is the Ionian Sea. The fleet of permanent yachts, especially catamarans, is limited. It is possible to charter from Athens, with the decisive factors being the availability of crossing of the Corint Canal which has been closed for reconstruction in 2021, open for only a few months in 2022 and uncertainty about being navigable in 2023.

Selecting Where to Charter in Greece

I want to see Santorini and Mykonos, my tickets are purchased for fixed dates three months from now in August and I need to start and finish in Athens, chartering a catamaran.

This is one of the most common inquiries, and one of the hardest to fulfill. Why?

• Time to charter – with 3 months to charter, your best options are long gone. Ideally book 9-12 months before the charter
• Flights vs Charter Location – with the distance between Athens and Santorini being 150 miles, the itinerary might not be possible due to weather, especially if we want to do Mykonos as well. Ideally, you’ll want to fly to Mykonos or Santorini or at least not plan fixed date island activities.
• Fixed dates- One day up or down can completely change the offer of yachts available – you might need just that one that already has another charter booked for the day before you’re planning to return. It is a great idea to have your charter booked before you purchase your tickets.
• Catamaran and long distances – as someone who does Athens – Santorini fairly regularly, it’s a great sail – for sport sailing. You’re on the open Aegean Sea and hiding behind islands is possible but further increases the distance – count 24 hours of sail one way and divide among the days of charter (24 hours x 2 ways / 7 days = 7 hours of sailing per day with a catamaran). Not a pleasurable experience.
• Time of year – Santorini in August is equivalent to Times Square on New Year’s Eve. It can be a fantastic place if you have the correct expectations. There are 6,000 islands in Greece – plenty of alternatives for high end restaurants, history, Greek cuisine and peaceful or more popular places. Notice places like Milos and Lefkada are being increasingly crowded as well.
• Despite all the above – inquire. We’re well connected with local providers in all areas and are able to provide non-public offers or creatively fulfill your requirements.

Yacht charter and boat rental are synonyms of one another. Most yacht charters start on Saturday and are usually rented for 7 nights/8 days. Therefore, most of the prices on this website are weekly. It is possible to arrange a shorter or a longer charter or start on a different day. Another aspect of yacht charters in Greece is the currency. All the charter prices are shown in Euro (€) to adjust the exchange rate fluctuation.

'Access to hidden-gem ports': Why this luxury yacht is the best option for beach lovers

“This is your yacht, to do with as you please,” Captain Rob O’Leary told guests of the Emerald Sakara , the second luxury superyacht from Emerald Cruises. “We have an international crew from 21 different nations, and we are all here for you.”

I was on the maiden voyage of the 360-foot Sakara, a December 2023 sailing with the added glamor of a Champagne christening in San Juan, Puerto Rico, led by the ship’s godmother, Kelly Craighead. She is president of Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s leading trade organization.

“Sakara” is a Sanskrit word meaning “thoughts become things” – a fitting name, given the thought that went into the ship’s chic design. And our itinerary for the week couldn’t be more yacht-like – an island-hopping experience in the West Indies, stopping in out-of-the-way ports that larger cruise ships can’t manage. And while some smaller boats can feel rocky, the Sakara’s stabilizers keep the ship on an even keel.

With just 100 guests and 76 crew, the Sakara is part of the larger trend in cruising: smaller ships that cater to vacationers who want the style and feel of a yacht, and the intimate service that accompanies that, with the amenities of a larger ship. Craighead said small-ship cruises offer “luxury at a great value, access to hidden-gem ports and unique features like marinas for water activities directly off the ship. These small ships can even be chartered for your own amazing, private yacht experience.”

After departing from San Juan, the Sakara reached the Puerto Rican island of Culebra in a few hours, just 20 miles off the coast. We hopped in a taxi van at the port to reach the pristine waters of Flamenco Beach, which consistently makes the world’s top 10 lists. It was a fall-asleep-on-the-sand kind of day, under brightly colored umbrellas, with multiple trips to the canteen for french fries.

“I hope you enjoyed Culebra today because it’s quite hard to get in, through a very narrow channel,” O’Leary said at a supper-hour briefing. 

The next day, we stopped at the nearby island of Vieques, which is filled with wild horses – about 2,000 of them – most of which are fully accustomed to the photo op. We docked at Esperanza Bay and wandered the waterfront. Jeeps or ATVs were available to rent for those who wanted to beach-hop, but we settled into the sand at Sun Bay. And when we sailed into Cruz Bay on the U.S. Virgin Island of St. John the next day, there were yachts and catamarans everywhere – and the Sakara fit right in.

The crew outdid itself the next day at White Bay Beach on Jost Van Dyke, the smallest of the British Virgin Islands. A barbecue feast awaited us, along with beach loungers, steel drum entertainment, and all the paddles and water toys from the ship. Later, we wandered down the beach to find a young yacht crowd, groups of friends who have rented their boats, all knee-deep in their mojitos.

“I get a real kick out of driving the Emerald Sakara into St. Barths, muscling in and anchoring next to all the other superyachts,” O’Leary said. “It looks good in the pictures.” A stop there brought a snorkeling excursion, a bit of high-end shopping and a few rosé-soaked hours on Plage de Saline.

Back on board, the creature comforts of the Sakara included plenty of outdoor space to connect with the ocean, a small infinity pool, a full-service spa and a large, elegant dining room and terrace. It’s all part of the cushy yacht lifestyle. 

The ship will spend the summer and fall cruising the Mediterranean Sea – heading for the French and Italian rivieras, Croatia and Greece – with eight-day itineraries from $5,100. The Emerald Sakara will be back in the Caribbean next December, with eight-day cruises starting at $4,100.

Beyond striking a cutting figure, classic yachts offer more than the routine experience of most modern charter yachts. These vessels are living narratives—laden with stories and personalities from bygone eras—with details that carry a legacy of old-world sophistication and finesse: Think Christina O ’s distinctive swimming pool or Shenandoah of Sark’ s dramatic sail plan.

“Whenever I step on board a classic yacht, I like to imagine where the yacht has cruised through the decades,” says charter broker Céline Pujol. “Who were the guests who stepped onboard?” Christina O , for example, served as a wedding venue for people ranging from supermodel Heidi Klum to Prince Rainier III of Monaco, who wed Grace Kelly in 1956. This vessel also hosted an unusually large share of prime ministers, presidents and celebrities, so that a charter today could mean sleeping or eating in the same areas as Winston Churchill, JFK, Frank Sinatra, or Elizabeth Taylor.

Time is the essence of a classic yacht, Céline explains. “First, you travel back in time, being onboard a unique piece of history. Second, the travel actually takes time, because these yachts aren’t fast. But that allows you to indulge and live each moment to the fullest. You simply can’t rush from one place to another.”

With many vintage vessels, both power and sail, now part of the global charter fleet, a growing number of charter clients are considering immersing themselves in the rich, wood interiors, eating at formal dining tables with 1930s china, or gazing out at the ocean from deck-chairs. The experience, really, is not comparable to life aboard a modern yacht. Many charter guests are asking themselves: Why chase trends when you can relive history?

Here are nine of our favorite classics.

‘Marala’

Built in 1931 by Camper & Nicholsons, Marala is one of the few surviving yachts of that time, and as a result, carries a remarkable history. It served as a navy vessel during World War II and later played host to distinguished guests that range from Salvador Dalí to Frank Sinatra. The 193-footer recently completed an extensive two-year refit by Pendennis. The yard worked with Muza Labs to restore the original 1930s Art Deco design, including the beautiful copper Jacuzzi on the aft deck. The vessel comfortably accommodates 12 guests across six cabins. Marala is available for charter with Ocean Independence.

‘Shenandoah of Sark’

Commissioned by a wealthy New York banker, this steel-hulled, 178-foot three-mast schooner launched in 1902 and went on to have one of the most interesting histories of any 20th century yacht. It was owned by German industrialists, British aristocrats, and even an Italian prince. The four-stateroom vessel underwent a total refurbishment in 1995 and has had four refits since, bringing it back to its former glory with plenty of modern features. The classic interior is filled with wood and brass fittings, sculpted glass, and even a grand piano—though it also has a state-of-the-art entertainment system as well as Wi-Fi and multiple water toys. If you want to experience what the Golden Age of Yachting was like, Shenandoah of Sark , available through Northrop & Johnson, is your vessel.

‘Christina O’

Perhaps the best-known classic yacht on the charter market, 325-foot Christina O ‘s timeless lines have served as inspiration for many modern builds. Originally built in 1943, the vessel started life as an anti-submarine frigate in Canada’s navy, serving in World War II in the D-Day landings and Battle of the Atlantic. In 1954, it was purchased by Aristotle Onassis for scrap before undergoing a $4 million refit. The boat went on to play host to Prince Charles and Princess Diana, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Winston Churchill, and Jackie and John F. Kennedy, as well as for the wedding of Prince Rainier III and Grace Kelly. Today, Christina O is a celebrity in its own right, having been featured in The Crown and Triangle of Sadness . The boat is best known for the canoe stern and bronze-edged mosaic swimming pool that transforms into a covered dancefloor. ‘Monara’

Monara is a classic gentleman’s yacht, once the pride of a wealthy Milanese banking family and later purchased by an English aristocrat. The 84-foot vessel has also played host to Spanish royalty. It’s now a proud member of the Feadship Heritage Fleet. The Dutch yard rebuilt the vessel in 2016. As a charter vessel, it combines a timeless aesthetic with state-of-the-art amenities and plenty of deck space. Monara can accommodate eight guests across four cabins. It is available for charter through Camper & Nicholsons.

‘Over the Rainbow’

Over The Rainbow has enjoyed a colorful past. After being launched in 1930 and cruising the U.K., the 114-footer was commandeered by the Royal Navy at the start of World War II. Called HMS Corax, the vessel was used as a coastal patrol boat. The navy officers enjoyed their time onboard—the evidence of their favorite pastime, darts, can still be seen on its original Honduras mahogany panels. Post-war, Over the Rainbow was taken across the Atlantic to cruise the U.S. until making its way back to the Mediterranean for use as a floating casino until 2000. Then it was painstakingly restored and put to charter. It has enjoyed visits from celebrities ranging from Churchill to Madonna, who made a video while staying on board. Over The Rainbow houses a collection of literature by authors like Ernest Hemingway and has the alfresco deck space for reading, eating and entertaining. It accommodates 11 guests across four cabins. The vessel is available for charter through TWW Yachts.

‘Malahne’

Meticulously restored to its original opulence, Malahne is an Art Deco masterpiece built by Camper & Nicholsons. The 177-footer was delivered in 1937, spending the first few years sailing around the world before serving in World War II, specifically at the evacuation of Dunkirk. It later went on to become one of the most famous yachts of Hollywood’s elite after being purchased by Oscar-winning film producer Sam Spiegel ( Lawrence of Arabia and The Bridge on the River Kwai ), who hosted Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Jack Nicholson, Grace Kelly and Kirk Douglas. The interior experienced a recent makeover by Scottish designer Guy Oliver, also responsible for the styling of 10 Downing Street. Rich in historic details, the vessel features a comfortable full-beam master suite, and four other suites for groups up to 10. Malahne is available for charter through Edmiston.

‘Astarte’

The story of Astarte , a classic wooden schooner, matches the life of Greek shipping magnate, John S. Latsis. Ranked as one of the richest men of all time by Forbes magazine, Latsis commissioned the Psarros Shipyard to build a classic yacht from wood. Alcyone , as the vessel was first named, hit the water in 1964, where it eventually hosted Prince Charles and Princess Diana, Marlon Brando, George Bush, and the Saudi royal family. Today, the 79-footer’s classic lines hark to a bygone era of elegance and luxury. Those themes are evident in the salon decorated with giant nautilus shells, gorgons of the sea and other old nautical items. The tea and coffee services are authentic 1930s art deco, as is the Brazilian rosewood bar. The boat even has a wine cellar. Based in Greece, Astarte can comfortably accommodate nine guests across four cabins. The boat is available for charter through Tahiti Yacht Base.

‘Sherakhan’

When the owner of the 228-foot Sherakhan was thinking of a name for the yacht, his daughter was watching The Jungle Book . Inspired by the book’s Bengal tiger, the name matched the incredible vessel, which sleeps up to 26 guests in 13 cabins. With its ice-class hull, Sherakhan has explored the most remote corners of the globe, including the Arctic and Antarctica, the Galapagos, and the South Pacific. A collection of curios—including a number of first-edition literary works—add an old-world charm. The vessel’s open 26-seat dining atrium also not only provides ample space for events, but is ideal for multi-generational cruising. Sherakhan is listed for charter through Y.Co.

‘Kalizma’

Delivered in 1906, Kalizma —originally named steamboat Minona —was one of the first vessels with electric lighting. The 150-footer went on to serve in both world wars, and its steam engines were eventually converted to diesel. By the 1970s, it was one of the most famous yachts in the world, largely thanks to Richard Burton’s purchase as a gift for Elizabeth Taylor. It was eventually bought by a new owner. Brad Pitt once reportedly enjoyed his time on board so much, he tried to buy the vessel. Today, Kalizma ’s beautifully updated interiors, ample deck space and enviable history make it a popular choice for charter. The boat can accommodate up to 10 guests across five cabins. It is available for charter through Morley Yachts.

Your Guide To 2024's BEST Luxury Hotels

We're only a short way into the year so far, but it already looks set to be a bumper one for blow-the-budget hotel openings, with some seriously seductive properties already opening around the world – and many more to come. From idyllic island retreats and high-design hideaways to ultra-glam boutique boltholes and palatial residences, here are some of the hot new places to stay in for luxury lovers.

Hegra Boutique Hotel, AlUla, Saudi Arabia

Home to monumental tombs carved into sandstone mountains, UNESCO World Heritage site Hegra is found in AlUla, northwest Saudi Arabia. Visitors to this awe-inspiring Nabataean city can now sleep within it, ensconced in 5-star luxury with breathtaking desert surroundings. The painstakingly constructed Hegra Boutique Hotel, which will rebrand to the Chedi Hegra a few months after completion, is expected to open in the first quarter of 2024. There will be 35 guest rooms and three fine dining restaurants, which have been cleverly and beautifully integrated into several existing (and untouched) original structures, including an old railway station and Hegra Fort.

Anantara Mina Al Arab Ras Al Khaimah Resort, Ras Al Khaimah, UAE

Ras Al Khaimah is one of the lesser known of the seven Emirates, but that looks set to change as its luxury offering appears on the radar of high-end travelers. Open since January, Anantara’s new uber-luxe eco-resort has begun luring more luxury lovers north of Dubai airport (just 45 minutes away). Surrounded by lagoons and mangroves, it sits on a sandy beach on Mina Al Arab Island. There are 174 rooms, suites and overwater pool villas, designed to be nature-friendly with an onus on sustainability. And of course it has all the luxuries you’d expect of Anantara: infinity pool, spa, kids’ clubs, watersports and destination restaurants (showcasing produce from the island’s own chef’s garden).

Six Senses London, London, UK

Finally breathing new life into the former Whiteleys department store in Bayswater, Six Senses London will open in early 2024 with 110 rooms and suites, along with 14 branded residences. As part of a £1bn overhaul of the long-since scruffy site, which includes retail and restaurants, the historic bones of the Art Deco landmark remain intact. Below ground the Six Senses Spa, including a large pool, will soothe any city stresses, while Six Senses Place on the second floor will be a social club “where wellness and community meet.”

House of Gods, Glasgow, Scotland

Expect over-the-top opulence and off-the-scale sultry glamor at the second outpost of boutique adults-only hotel House of Gods which opens in Glasgow in early 2024. The original outpost, located in Edinburgh Old Town, is all about the more-is-more mentality with its eclectic mix of decor and design (think drapes, tassels, velvet and animal print) and enticing cocktail bars. Happily, the west coast offering looks set to do the same. With a cheeky addition of a rooftop bar, this is going to be one helluva place to hole up for a hedonistic urban weekend.  

Hotel Valldemossa, Mallorca, Spain

It's adults only at this 12-room rural idyll in the rolling hills of Mallorca's Serra de Tramuntana, and all the more relaxing for it. Open since February as part of It Mallorca’s boutique hotel collection, Hotel Valldemossa occupies parts of the 19th-century Royal Charter Palace. As well as lashings of character, its spa and gastronomy are top notch. Japanese and Peruvian cuisine with a Mediterranean twist is on the menu at De Tokio a Lima, outpost of a Palma restaurant. If traditional tapas and island wine is more your vibe than ceviche and pisco sours, Valldemossa village and its restaurants are a short and scenic stroll from the grounds.

Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos, Baja California, Mexico

Expect to see Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos gracing A-list Instagram profiles soon. An adults-only coastal escape in starry Los Cabos, seclusion, space and style are sure to lure celebs to its 79 suites. Along with plunge pools and firepits on private terraces, it will have a tranquil cactus garden, infinity pool and private beach where guests can bask on Balinese beds before bathing in the Sea of Cortez. Aged tequilas, reposados and artisanal mezcals can be appreciated in the Agave Tasting Room and there’s a choice of onsite restaurants or those at nearby sister property, Grand Velas Los Cabos. 

Atzaro Okavango, Okavango Delta, Botswana

Due to open in the wetland wilderness of the Okavango Delta in March, this 100% solar-powered safari camp has serious luxe and eco credentials. It will feature eight large safari tented suites, all with private plunge pools, indoor-outdoor showers and private decks, and two family suites. Along with 5-star facilities like a wine bar, spa and pool, Atzaro aims to connect guests with the land and community. It will have an African art gallery and Ancestral Boma, a central space that aims to share the history of the area and the tribes and peoples that lived here.

Soneva Secret, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Maldives

A barefoot guardian, barefoot assistant and private chef are just some of the perks guests can expect at Soneva Secret, an 'ultra-bespoke' resort from the people behind A-list favorites Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani. The far-flung island enclave will start welcoming elite travelers from March into its 14 island and overwater villas. Will it be a Crusoe Villa, set on a lagoon and only accessible by boat, or perhaps the Castaway, the Maldives' first floating villa? Like its sister retreats, a high-end design aesthetic allows the natural beauty of the Indian Ocean archipelago to awe with features like sliding roofs to reveal the night sky. 

100 Princes Street, Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh’s famed thoroughfare Princes Street welcomes the intimate and exquisite 100 Princes Street hotel this March. The first Scottish property from the Red Carnation Hotels’ group, the historic Royal Overseas League building has been carefully restored to its former glory and will feature just 30 bedrooms. As well as boasting enchanting views of Edinburgh Castle, the boutique hotel will be the epitome of Scottish chic, with interiors by the design team behind sister hotel Ashford Castle. Picture custom tartan, bespoke artworks by local creatives and roaring fires where wee drams of rare whisky await.

The Star Grand, Brisbane, Australia

Bris-Vegas is owning its mantle in 2024 as the Queensland capital welcomes four luxury hotels this year as part of its shiny new entertainment precinct, the Queen’s Wharf. The hotly anticipated new district by Brisbane River includes repurposed heritage buildings and gleaming new contemporary architecture like the two arc-shaped towers, one of which will be occupied by The Star Grand. Opening in April, it will have 340 seriously stylish rooms and a show-stopping Leisure Deck with three pools perfectly positioned for ogling the river and South Bank. 

Six Senses La Sagesse, Grenada, Caribbean

Picture a jaw-dropping location on a sugar-soft sand beach, overlooking nothing but endless Caribbean Sea views and you have an idea of what Six Senses' new opening in Grenada is all about. In what’s set to be a big year of new openings for the luxury hotel brand, Six Senses La Sagesse will open in May in the southern part of the Spice Island. Set across over 38 acres with a layout inspired by a traditional fishing village, it has 56 two-level pool suites and 15 villas built from repurposed, natural materials. Guests in one of the five four-bedroom villas set out on a bluff will snag the best views with a 270-degree vantage point.

Thompson Palm Springs, California, US

Palm Springs isn’t short of chic places to stay and its style credentials continue to grow as Thompson Hotels opens its second Californian property this May in the desert enclave’s downtown Design District. The brand’s signature sleek decor will be complemented with earthy hues and vivid pops of color with an overarching Rat Pack-era style vision. It’s a biggie, with 168 "bungalow-inspired" rooms and suites, 35,000 square feet (3251sqm) of dining and retail space (including a vast Napa Valley wine tasting room), a gym, ballroom and spa. Balconies and a pool area will offer the classic Palm Spring views of the San Jacinto Mountains to pose by.

Gundari, Folegandros, Greece

Folegandros might be one of the sleepiest Cyclades islands but it has some seriously dreamy rustic-chic hideaways. This May, its first 5-star offering will open for the season. Rambling over a rugged clifftop in the southeast, close to the little village of Petousis, the Gundari Resort is quite simply gorgeous. Spa sessions or island adventures by e-bike or private boat will appeal to the relaxed or the adventurous. Along with all-encompassing Aegean views, Orizon celebrates Cycladic produce with a contemporary Greek menu designed by Michelin-starred chef Lefteris Lazarou. Guests hungry for more can master Folegandros specialties in cooking classes.

Viceroy at Ombria Algarve, Algarve, Portugal

Secluded sun-warmed beaches, wildflower-strewn cliffs and verdant vineyards: the Algarve is delightful in spring. There’s even more reason to set a route to the Portuguese province at that time of year as Viceroy Hotels & Resorts will throw open the doors to its latest European property. Sprawling across gentle undulating hills like an upmarket, white-washed village, Viceroy at Ombria Algarve will have 76 guestrooms and suites and 65 branded residences. There will be a spa, 18-hole golf course and eight restaurants and bars, while walking and biking trails will wind around the extensive gardens and orchards.

Banyan Tree Veya, Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico

Travelers looking for a truly transformative escape will do well to put Banyan Tree Veya, Valle de Guadalupe on their hit list. Opening in spring on Mexico’s northern Baja peninsula, the wellbeing resort will be the second outpost of the Banyan Tree Group's wellness-focused brand, Veya (the first is in Thailand). That’s not to say you can’t indulge, though: the secluded sanctuary-like space – with 30 exquisite villas designed by acclaimed Mexican architect Michel Rojkind – is set on a winery. As well as wellness, the local wine heritage is celebrated with a winemaking laboratory, underground cellar and tasting room – all organic and biodynamic, naturally. 

Domes Tholos Santorini, Santorini, Greece

Another dreamboat from the stable of five-star luxury resorts, Domes is poised to open on Santorini’s northwest coast this spring. The 52-suite-and-villa Domes Tholos Santorini will be the brand’s first property on the sought-after Cyclades Isle. Expect its signature blend of stunning location, classic luxury and effortless opulence with some distinct Santorini design touches (thanks to the use of the local volcanic stone). After pool and spa sessions, Makris restaurant is the place to be. Sat above a rooftop garden, guests can gaze west to witness the isle’s renowned sunsets.

Ara Maris Sorrento, Sorrento, Italy

As if we needed another reason to add the Amalfi Coast to our must-visit list... Ara Maris Sorrento is set to lure guests to the seaside city when it opens on the lemon-scented coastline in spring. A short hop from Sorrento’s pretty Piazza Tasso, the 49-room hotel – part of Preferred Hotels & Resorts’ L.V.X. Collection – will have some of the best views in town. All rooms have a balcony for enjoying sun-drenched views across the deep blue Bay of Naples and brooding Mount Vesuvius. Its rooftop Lumi Sky Lounge will be the place to be at aperitivo time. 

Maxx Royal Bodrum, Bodrum, Turkey

Sitting pretty on a private, pine-fragrant peninsula on the bay of Golturkbuku, this 294-room hotel from Turkey’s Maxx Royal Resorts brand is set to become Bodrum’s hottest new hangout when it opens in summer 2024. Suites and villas of varying sizes will pepper large, landscaped grounds, as will no less than six pools – outdoor, indoor, seawater and heated – and a whopping spa. There will be a sceney beach club, seven restaurants (including an outpost of Caviar Kaspia), 14 bars, a kids’ club and teen zone too. 

Rocco Forte House Milan, Milan, Italy

Always dreamt of living the life of an Italian fashionista? Live out your fantasies at Rocco Forte House Milan – a dream collaboration between award-winning design company Paolo Moschino Ltd and Olga Polizzi of Rocco Forte Hotels, in Europe’s fashion and design capital. Combining the swish service and style of a luxury hotel (butler service on request and breakfast delivered to your apartment) with the privacy and space of a Milanese home, you can book one, two or three-bedroom apartments, all with access to the rooftop. Plus, you’re a catwalk stride away from the area's designer boutiques, art galleries and elegant cafes.

Los Felices Ibiza, Ibiza, Spain

Dedicated followers of fashion will adore this retro-fashion inspired hotel from The Concept Hotels group, on track to open this summer. A Sixties Palm Springs aesthetic meets blissed-out Balearic feels at the pastel-hued Los Felices Ibiza to pleasing effect. It’s far from an identikit fit out, with each of its suites and villas individually designed by a different fashion designer. Set on San Jose Bay, it will have a pose-worthy pool area and see-and-be-seen restaurant, along with a boutique selling fashion magazines and style books.

One&Only Kea Island, Kea, Greece

Slated for completion in spring, this new all-villa island hideaway from One&Only will be one of the Cyclades’ most sought-after spots this summer. The secluded villas are built above the beach on a hillside, all positioned to enjoy uninterrupted views of the bay. Romance is very much encouraged with private pools, terraces, courtyards and fireplace. Inside, interiors are elegant but muted to let the dazzling views of the Aegean Sea take center stage. A beach club and sun-dappled waterside eating spots will no doubt lure the private yacht set to One&Only Kea from Athens, just a 30-minute sailing away.

The Bonobos by Raes, Byron Bay, Australia

The people behind Byron Bay’s original luxury hotel, Raes on Watego, are set to launch a good-looking new accommodation offering at the end of the year. Working with developer Podia and the architects behind Brisbane’s cool The Calile Hotel, The Bonobo by Raes will be a coastal cool hotel-apartment complex. Under construction on Jonson Street, it will have 41 two, three and four-bedroom apartments – all airy, ultra-luxe with design-led features. Along with state-of-the-art kitchens, there will also be onsite dining, a rooftop pool and wellness venues. 

Cheval Blanc Seychelles, Seychelles

Promising barefoot luxury by the brilliant blue shores of the Indian Ocean, Cheval Blanc Seychelles will be the sixth Cheval Blanc Maison (a LVMH-owned brand) when it opens later this year. Set on the sugary-white Anse Intendance beach (pictured) on Mahe Island’s southwest coast, the boutique beach hotel is the work of architect Jean-Michel Gathy, who is seeking to capture the country’s Creole heritage in the design. Flawless facilities including a stunning spa and five dining venues are on the agenda for this tropical enclave, which will also have 52 large villas, with a beach, hillside or jungle setting and private pools.

Rosewood Schloss Fuschl, Austria

A new chapter is opening for this storybook 15th-century castle on the wooded banks of Lake Fuschl in the Salzburg province. After a major two-year renovation, the former royal country residence, which became a hotel in the 1950s, will reopen. Now under management of Rosewood Resorts & Hotels, Schloss Fuschl will once again reign as one of Europe’s grand castle hotels with 98 guestrooms, including 46 suites and six chalets, and a raft of destination restaurants and opulent lounges. Guests can amble around its extensive grounds and unwind in Asaya, Rosewood’s signature wellbeing space.

Romazzino, A Belmond hotel, Costa Smeralda, Sardinia

Straight out of a White Lotus set, the Belmond’s reimagining of '60s-era beachside Hotel Romazzino will be a magnet for the uber-rich on this exclusive stretch of Sardinia’s coastline. Private pools and beach, curated experiences and elegant waterfront rooms, sophisticated suites and secluded seafront villas are all in the offing for those checking into this stunning Costa Smeralda hotel. 

SLS Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain

It’s not surprising that hotel group Ennismore has set its sights on Barcelona’s hip 22@ district for the first European outpost of its SLS brand. Slated to open in the revitalized old industrial area of Poblenou in the second half of 2024, the striking 471-room SLS Barcelona will combine SLS’s signature cool and cheeky style with seaside Med vibes. Water views are a given as each room will have a balcony and there will be three pools and two restaurants. The large rooftop sky bar and a spa will be a high point, as will direct access to the beach.  

Our Habitas Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

Mere steps from a white sand beach with a lush jungle backdrop, Our Habitas’ first Costa Rica property is a style-conscious surfer’s dream. It is set to open on the Nicoya Peninsula in the surf town of Santa Teresa by the end of the year. True to the brand, its design and ethos is rooted in sustainability and local community empowerment. It will have 45 low-impact, earth-inspired rooms and a clutch of luxury tents. A social feel extends to its chilled bar and surf shack, while Suawe champions a farm-to-table ethos. Activities encourage guests to embrace nature, from surfing world-class breaks and beach horse rides to mountain biking in the jungle, al fresco meditation sessions and sunset bonfires.

KAI Akiu, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan

Healing in a heavenly setting is on offer at KAI Akiu, a ryokan (inn) with a soothing minimalist design in Akiu, a historic hot spring destination close to the city of Sendai. Everything about this 49-room ryokan exudes a sense of calm, from river gazing from the rooms’ sitting areas to soaking in the restorative mineral-rich waters of its baths (which will be fed by two onsite hot springs). The food is bound to lift spirits too with multi-course Kaiseki menus. Following forested hiking trails to nearby waterfall Akiu Otaki and open-air rock baths in the Natori River are also encouraged.

Six Senses The Forestias, Bangkok, Thailand

Poised to open at the end of the year or the start of 2025 in a purpose-built forest close to bustling Bangkok, this leafy luxury escape from Six Senses is sure to make tree huggers swoon. With 60 guest rooms, 27 residences, restaurants and a co-working space, Six Senses The Forestias will be centered around a woodland lagoon. Wellbeing and nature are central to the design, which aims to have a “therapeutic and calming effect” on guests. Along with the latest health and wellness facilities, its forested grounds will be laced with trails.
