Boot 2024 Unveils Sailing Yachts with Enhanced Safety and Comfort for On-Board Living
Boot Düsseldorf 202 4 is set to showcase the entire spectrum of yachting, unveiling a diverse range of vessels from nimble dinghies and sporty sailing yachts under 30 feet to expansive cruisers designed for extended journeys. The spotlight is on the latest releases, with an emphasis on yachts featuring ample deck and cabin space, catering to solo and short-handed sailing enthusiasts.
The smaller keel yachts under 30 feet showcase thrilling dinghy-type sailing capabilities, providing an exhilarating experience close to the water. Blurring the lines between sporty standard boats and fast daysailers, innovations like the Saffier SE 24 Lit e exemplify the perfect balance of elegance and speed, equipped with an electric pod drive integrated with a solar panel system on the foredeck.
At the heart of Boot 2024 will be the grand debut of Hallberg-Rassy’s 69-foot luxury touring yacht , the largest sailing vessel at the event. This masterfully crafted yacht combines modern yacht building elements with the renowned quality of the Swedish shipyard, offering comfort and exceptional sailing prowess suitable for diverse weather conditions and cruising regions. Designed as an ideal ocean cruiser, it boasts ample storage and sophisticated energy and water supply systems, ensuring independence from onshore supply stations.
The trend towards social cooking on larger yachts (35+ feet) is evident, with integrated pantries below deck, often extending into the salon, and outdoor barbecue setups becoming standard. Voluminous hulls and protruding bow shapes are gaining popularity, resulting in spacious cabins and staterooms with an elegant luxury feel.
The emphasis on natural light is evident in yacht designs, with integrated windows providing stunning views of the sea. Energy-efficient LED lighting and air-conditioning, powered increasingly by solar panels, enhance the onboard experience.
Comfort below deck is a priority, featuring generously proportioned berths, multiple bathrooms, and clever storage solutions. Modern yachts also focus on providing easy access between living areas, promoting socializing on board.
Flexible configurations, customizable interiors, and ample storage for toys such as dinghies, SUP boards, and kite or wingfoiling equipment are key considerations for modern yacht owners. Environmental consciousness is reflected in the use of protective films for ship hulls, black-water tanks, and electrical anchor winches.
Digitalization plays a significant role in modern yachting, with nautical charts and displays offering comprehensive information. Yachts are equipped with their own apps, providing owners with control over consumption levels, boat movements, and security features. Easy sailing and fast cruising are the priorities, with halyards and rope trims led to the aft cockpit for effortless single-handed sailing.
Privacy is also a focus in yacht design, with developments like two companionways separating the owner’s area from guest cabins for enhanced seclusion.
Boot Düsseldorf, from January 20 to 28, 2024, is positioned as the world’s largest yacht and watersports trade fair, featuring a diverse range of boats, luxury yachts, and watersports equipment. The event will not only showcase the latest trends and innovations in the industry but also emphasize marine protection and sustainable technologies. With over 237,000 visitors expected from over 60 countries and 1,500 exhibitors, Boot Düsseldorf 2024 promises to be a unique and influential event in the yachting world.

The biggest upcoming deliveries from every country in 2024
With nearly 700 yachts awaiting delivery, the superyacht industry is forging ahead into an exciting new year. BOAT looks toward the biggest contributions from around the world – showcasing a variety of fan-favourite series, entirely new designs and even some country records to boot...
Project Ali Baba
Builder: Lürssen Length: 142.1m
Officially launched in December 2023, Project Ali Baba was accidentally revealed slightly beforehand when a technical failure at the shipyard's Bremen site forced the yacht's nose into the dock curtain. Initial images of the yacht showcase a grey profile with an elongated bow and bold exterior lines spanning four decks. Otherwise, details of the project remain tightly under wraps.
The Netherlands
Feadship 821.
Builder: Feadship Length: 118.8m
Feadship's future flagship began construction in 2021 and was spotted for the first time as her bare hull was rolled out of the shed in 2022 . At 118.8 metres, Project 821 is believed to be Feadship's largest yacht to date, usurping its current flagship Anna , which measures 110 metres.
Freire NB-729
Builder: Freire Length: 105m
Freire has kept an extremely tight lid on Project NB-729 since announcing it had secured the contract in July 2021. Built from steel and aluminium, the 105-metre expedition yacht will become Freire's third-largest delivery once she is released from the yard in 2024, coming after the 111.9-metre Renaissance and 110.6-metre Falkor (Too) .
Builder: Bilgin Length: 80m
Named Al Reem , Bilgin's third unit in its 80-metre 263 superyacht series builds on the success of sister ships Tatiana and Leona with an additional 20 per cent in volume. All three hulls in the series share the same bullet-shaped profile conceived by Unique Yacht Design , with interiors by British studio H2 Yacht Design . However, Al Reem benefits from a fresh new layout and several technical refinements, including a longer upper deck and an extra covered area at the stern.
Builder: Admiral – The Italian Sea Group Length: 78m
Very little is known about the upcoming 78-metre custom project from The Italian Sea Group 's Admiral brand. The 2,073 GT superyacht supposedly features an exterior from Igor Lobanov and an interior by Sinot Yacht Architecture and Design , with the latter also responsible for designing Admiral's upcoming Project Blue Marlin – a 76-metre motor yacht also due for delivery in 2024.
Golden Yachts 60M
Builder: Golden Yachts Length: 60m
Another entry with sparse details, the newest project from Golden Yachts promises to follow in the footsteps of previous deliveries O'Ptasia , O'Mathilde and O'Pari , with each yacht's exterior and interior design owed to long-time partner Studio Vafiadis . Most recently, Golden Yachts released the 77-metre O'Rea (renamed Malia ), which had her global debut at the 2023 Monaco Yacht Show.
Danzante Bay
Builder: Crescent Custom Yachts Length: 50m
Named after her owner's Mexican resort and golf course, Danzante Bay is notable for being the new flagship of Crescent Custom yachts as well as the largest yacht to be built in Canada. Her exterior design and naval architecture are from Gregory C. Marshall with interiors by British studio H2 Yacht Design that have yet to be revealed. Some of the known highlights include a sundeck spa pool, foredeck sun lounge and glass bulwarks on the upper deck offering unhindered views of the surrounding seascape.
JinLong 46M
Builder: JinLong Yachts Length: 46.5m
One of three 46M models arriving in 2024, China's largest upcoming delivery comes from the same series commissioned by famed martial artist and actor Jackie Chan. The Karate Kid star received his own 46-metre JinLong superyacht in 2019 after graduating from a 2017 Ruiying 125 motor yacht. According to BOATPro , all three yachts will share the same Mulder Design exterior with input from the Chinese shipyard on the interior.
Conrad C144S
Builder: Conrad Shipyard Length: 44.3m
Following the success of the yard's new flagship Ace , Conrad Shipyard is readying the finishing touches on the series' second hull, which pairs an exterior from Reymond Langton with interior design from M2 Atelier . Onboard highlights include a generous beach club, an infinity pool and an outdoor cinema on the top deck. Work is also continuing on an upcoming third hull, Project Moonlight , with plans for a fourth hull already in the works.
United Arab Emirates
Majesty 140.
Builder: Gulf Craft Length: 43.1m
Representing the sixth unit in Gulf Craft's Majesty 140 series, this upcoming motor yacht was sold to an owner with plans to cruise the Mediterranean during her debut summer season before making the annual migration to the Caribbean. Interiors from Cristiano Gatto host up to 12 guests in five cabins, with crew quarters split between the bow and the aft of the yacht for a total capacity of nine.
South Korea
Builder: Legacy Super Yachts Length: 41.2m
Initially called the Phoenix 130, construction of the Legacy 135 began on speculation as the first in a new series set to include 50- and 70-metre designs. The upcoming yacht has been designed and engineered by American design team Joe Lazzara and Ian Ombres of Lazzara Ombres Architects , with an industrial and art deco-inspired interior from French designer Alexandre Thiriat .
United States of America
Westport 135.
Builder: Westport Yachts Length: 41m
The ninth hull in the W125 series, this latest project from Westport has been "redefined" as a W135 after being lengthened from the model's usual 38.1 metres to a custom 40.99 metres. The yacht is currently undergoing sea trials and its final outfitting stage before being delivered to her new owner in April 2024, with both exterior and interior design owed to the shipyard's in-house team.
Project Seaview
Builder: MCP Yachts Length: 40.7m
Project Seaview builds on an existing partnership with Dutch studio Vripack , having previously collaborated on the 37.4-metre Queen Tati and the 43.8-metre Raffaella II . For this latest instalment, the pair opted for a layout that would maximise privacy onboard, featuring a 360-degree master cabin with its own private terrace and settee. The yacht also makes use of a separate crew staircase for minimal guest disturbances – a feature not typically seen in yachts of a similar size bracket.
Horizon RP122
Builder: Horizon Yachts Length: 37.2m
With a delivery date teetering on the horizon, this custom R122 model was commissioned for a repeat Horizon Yachts owner with an expressed love for reef fishing. Special requests were made to house the owner's fishing and diving gear in the beach club, with added capacity for an ice chipper meant for freshly caught fish. At 37.2 metres, the yacht will be the largest of the J.C. Espinosa -designed RP series.
Builder: SilverYachts Length: 35.5m
Technically being built at the SilverYachts facility in China, the Australian shipyard began construction on the second hull in its SpaceCat series on speculation back in 2021. The yacht features exterior design by acclaimed designer Espen Øino , who has previously described the SpaceCat as a "bold undertaking" due to its efficient weight savings and clever internal layout. According to SilverYachts, the series is set to expand with an entry-level 22-metre model and a mid-level 24-metre model.
United Kingdom
Project fox.
Builder: Pendennis Length: 34.9m
Designed as a compact explorer for adventurous owners, Project Fox is on track to meet her slated delivery of March 2024. The 295 GT motor yacht includes an expansive 103.5-metre open aft deck capable of storing a pair of 7.5-metre tenders, plus the option of submersibles, Jet Skis or any other toys the owner might like. Other crowd-pleasing features include a DJ station, glass-walled sky lounge and dedicated wine fridge.
Builder: StellarPM Length: 33m
The StellarONE series offers a masterclass in supplying ample features on a relatively small platform. A beach club, tender garage, Tier III engines and a master cabin with its own fold-out balcony are only some of the highlights concealed within a 299 GT frame – and all for less than $10 million. In addition to the StellarONE108, the series will include full displacement and semi-displacement 118 and 130 models.
Builder: Granocean Length: 32m
Azure III is currently in the final stages of construction at Granocean's Zhongshan facility, where she will emerge as the yard's largest full-custom power catamaran to date. Onboard features include a generous swimming pool and lounge area on the foredeck, positioned transversely between the hulls. Inside, accommodations include an owner's suite, two additional VIP cabins and additional crew cabins.
South Africa
Builder: S outhern Wind Length: 31.4m
The fifth hull in Southern Wind's popular SW96 series was commissioned by a repeat client and has been designed to balance comfortable family cruising with more performance-oriented experiences. Once delivered, Liberty will join sisterships Nyumba , Ammonite , Seatius and Sorceress on the water.
Builder: Nautor Swan Length: 28.3m
In addition to being the first Swan 88 , this upcoming sailing yacht represents Nautor Swan's first-ever delivery with hybrid electric propulsion. The yacht also has a maximum heeling angle of 20 degrees paired with a four-metre draught, fashioning what the yard refers to as a "no-compromise cruiser with a racer soul". Further customisations include options for a shallow draft, telescopic and performance keel.
Grand Banks 85
Builder: Grand Banks Length: 25.9m
The first Grand Banks model to crest the 24-metre mark, the GB 85 is also notable for its V-Warp technology, which the yard has stated requires half the fuel of similarly-sized yachts. The model comes in an enclosed flybridge or open sky lounge configuration with accommodation for up to 10 guests. This upcoming GB 85 follows in the footsteps of the yard's flagship delivery, Betty , with a third hull already in build.
Highland Fling XVIII
Builder: Gunboat Length: 24.7m
Gunboat's flagship catamaran was commissioned by an experienced yachtsman and is expected to be one of the fastest in its size bracket. Capable of exceeding true wind speed at just six knots, Highland Fling XVIII is optimised for racing with a competitive, ultra-lightweight construction made of carbon fibre. Her striking red exterior is owed to fellow French studio VPLP , with interiors by Chedal Anglay Design .

Cruising World’ s 2024 Boat of the Year Competition
Nineteen new sailboats from top boatbuilders around the globe battle for this year’s coveted Boat of the Year title.
With sweet, early autumn sailing conditions on Chesapeake Bay, a strong fleet of 19 contenders competed for top honors in our annual Boat of the Year competition. Once the spray had settled and the votes were tallied, the judges awarded prizes in seven categories for monohulls and multihulls.
We must be getting lucky. The denizens of Annapolis, Maryland, have dubbed their city “the sailing capital of the United States” for many reasons: the abundance of yachts; myriad nearby rivers, creeks and backwaters on which to explore and cruise; the abundance of marinas and shipyards; the frenetic local racing scene; and the annual in-water Annapolis Sailboat Show, the country’s biggest and best.

Boat of the year: how it works.
Cruising World ’s annual Boat of the Year competition is the recognized leader in inspecting, testing and rewarding the best sailboats introduced into the US market by boatbuilders the world over. Judging and testing for this year’s awards will take place during and after the Annapolis Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Maryland, which begins October 12.
Over the course of nearly two weeks around the Annapolis Sail Show, sailboats receiving official nominations will be thoroughly adjudicated by an independent panel of marine experts who, as a team, evaluate each nominated vessel in two stages: dockside during the show, and then in dedicated sea trials. The judges measure every spec, inspect every inch of rigging, unscrew every electrical panel to examine the wiring behind it, scrutinize every element of construction, and question every layout option. And then they sail it.
No other program puts boats through such rigorous trials. It’s a testament to the legitimacy of Cruising World ’s Boat of the Year competition and the reason why you see our trademark blue triangle Boat of the Year logos proudly displayed on banners at boat-show booths worldwide.
Boat of the Year: Meet the Judges
Throughout the history of the competition, our judges have tested hundreds of boats, and in doing so, helped our Boat of the Year program earn its reputation as the gold standard of international sailboat awards. We’ve once again assembled a top-tier, non-biased judging panel based on their complementary backgrounds and skill sets, not to mention decades upon decades of combined experience, both in the industry and at the helm. If there’s a nit to pick, rest assured these experts will be all over it.
Herb McCormick
Over the course of his career as a sailor and yachting journalist, award-winning marine writer Herb McCormick has written hundreds of boat reviews and raced and cruised tens of thousands of miles, including the Newport Bermuda Race, the Sydney-Hobart Race, the Pacific Cup and the Transpac. His offshore resume includes a voyage to Antarctica, a successful transit of the Northwest Passage, and two roundings of Cape Horn. The author of five nautical books, he’s owned and maintained several sailboats, including his current Pearson 365 and Pearson Ensign. As a Boat of the Year judge, he concentrates on sailing performance, safety, and deck layouts.
Mark Pillsbury
Mark Pillsbury is a die-hard sailor who has owned and maintained a number of sailboats, including a Sabre 34, on which he lived aboard for 15 years in various harbors around Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay. He has been involved with Cruising World’s Boat of the Year program in various roles for many years and has reviewed scores of new sailboats for the magazine. He is currently a Cruising World editor-at-large. As a judge, his purview is interior plans, systems and build quality.
Longtime CW contributor, editor-at-large and award-winning marine journalist and author Tim Murphy currently serves as education project manager with the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC). Having been involved with ABYC since 1998, Murphy supported the rollout of ABYC’s Marine Electrical Certification; designed and edited ABYC certification study guides as a contractor; and co-authored (with Ed Sherman) Fundamentals of Marine Service Technology , a marine-trades textbook for secondary and post-secondary education. Now a full-time staff member, Murphy has taken on the role of education project manager to oversee the creation of ABYC curriculum and certification materials, and other key responsibilities to grow ABYC’s technical education and content creation capabilities.

With each passing year, it seems that boats just keep getting better. Faster, thanks to improvements in propulsion technology as well as slicker hull designs and the widespread use of wake-adapted running gear. Lighter, by way of composite cores and engines with greater horsepower-to-weight ratios. Stronger, from the use of exotic materials plus advanced construction techniques that are often borrowed from the aerospace and space-exploration industries. No matter if you prefer a small, nimble dayboat for some hardcore light-tackle action or a mega-sport-fisherman capable of long-range passagemaking and the ultimate in liveaboard luxury, there’s something for you among this new breed of vessels hitting the water soon.
Release Boatworks 55
- Beam: 16’9″
- Displ.: 53,000 lb.
- Fuel: 1,000 gal.
- Water: 150 gal.
- Power: Twin MAN V-8 1200
The first of the company’s new Gameboat line, the Release 55 is designed to be everything you would expect from this builder, yet refined to be a simpler fishing platform. Based on their experiences fishing on their own charter boats in Guatemala, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, the company’s principles found that they not only enjoyed the simplicity of these boats, but also recognized some obvious shortcomings, such as better speed, greater range, modern accommodations, and more storage. In terms of construction and fit-and-finish, the Gameboat line is no different from any other Release—these boats are designed to chase billfish and tuna, be durable and fast, yet easy to maintain, with multiple layouts that focus on rod, tackle and bait storage, with interiors and systems that deliver a low-maintenance fish-chasing vessel.
SeaVee Boats 40
- Beam: 11’3″
- Draft: 2’4″
- Displ.: 10,500 lb.
- Fuel: 650 gal.
- Water: 60 gal.
- Power: Quad Outboard
SeaVee Boats has begun production of the all-new 400Z center-console, which will feature an innovative stepped-hull design to significantly enhance efficiency and handling. Born of offshore-racing technology, the 400Z twin stepped-hull has been optimized using proprietary semi-empirical computer modeling. To achieve the highest performance possible, the hull features unique geometry, along with a carefully engineered weight-distribution arrangement, to ensure the optimal angle of attack; this produces maximum hull lift with minimal forward resistance at typical operating speeds and conditions. All SeaVee boats are built using a state-of-the-art manufacturing process where the hull, liner, deck and console are fabricated using vacuum-assisted resin-transfer infusion. This high-tech cored unibody construction results in reduced VOC emissions, and a lighter, stronger, and higher-quality laminate.
Maverick Yachts Costa Rica 50
- Beam: 17’4″
- Draft: 4’2″
- Displ.: 44,000 lb.
- Fuel: 1,100 gal.
- Power: Twin CAT C18
Based on the success of its earlier models, Maverick Yachts is now building an updated version of its popular 50-foot custom sport-fisherman. Maverick hulls are cold-molded using three layers of 5⁄16-inch laurel blanco hardwood on a custom-designed jig, and are bonded using West System epoxy resin. Erwin Gerards of EG Yacht Designs in Jupiter, Florida, designed the hull to be both fast and seakindly, and judging by the ride, he has once again done a masterful job. The new 50 will be available with 1,100 hp Caterpillar C18 engines for improved performance; the boat currently under production will also feature a Seakeeper 9 and Simrad sonar.
Winter Custom Yachts 74
- Beam: 21’6″
- Displ.: 100,000 lb.

The layout will feature four staterooms, with interior cabinetry of horizontal book-matched high-gloss walnut and high-gloss solid-walnut trim, showcasing the builder’s woodworking abilities. The 2,400 hp MTU engines will push the vessel to a 38-knot cruise and 46-knot top end, with a fuel capacity of 2,400 gallons. Forward of the galley to port is a spacious tackle room as well as a walk-in laundry room on the opposite side, which are just a few of many custom touches found throughout.
Spencer Yachts 80
- Draft: 5’6″
- Displ.: 120,000 lb.
- Fuel: 4,000-plus gal.
- Power: Twin MTU 12V 2000 M96X
The team at Spencer has announced the start of Hull No. 231: a new 80-footer. This custom build maximizes luxury with two huge master staterooms, a VIP suite and crew quarters. The elegant surroundings enhance Spencer Yachts’ signature characteristics of performance, speed and styling. The 80 will be powered by a pair of 2,600 hp MTU engines and will have integral fuel tanks for a maximum capacity of more than 4,000 gallons. Top speed is estimated at 42-plus knots. - Displ.: 60,000 lb.
- Fuel: 1,350 gal.
- Power (optional): Twin CAT C18; MTU 10V 1600
Debuting at this year’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show will be the Albemarle Boats Spencer Edition 53—the result of a partnership between the two builders for a semicustom Carolina production boat. The 160-square-foot cockpit and mezzanine are decked in natural teak, with an innovative two-box ice bin, bait freezer, refrigerated drink box, tackle storage, and engine-room access all located in the mezzanine. The 53 is powered by twin MTU 10V 1600 engines, and her hull design offers the seakeeping ability for which both Albemarle and Spencer have long been known. Mechanical highlights include a 21 kW Onan generator, Seakeeper 9, FCI watermaker, and an Eskimo ice chipper. A pump room forward of the engine-room bulkhead houses the sonar and other equipment.
Scarborough Boatworks 67
- Beam: 18’6″
- Displ.: 95,000 lb.
- Fuel: 2,200 gal.
- Water: 300 gal.
- Power: MAN V-12 2000
This is the third build for one of Scarborough’s earliest customers, and will incorporate improvements learned from the two previous vessels into Hull No. 18. The 67-footer will be powered by a pair of 2,000 hp MAN engines and should cruise easily and efficiently in the mid-30-knot range. The salon and staterooms will be elaborately appointed, with teak veneers and solids that were hand-selected by the owners, along with granite countertops and custom sinks and faucets that will pair nicely with the teak. The cockpit mezzanine seating will utilize refrigerated storage and a massive ice compartment supplied by a 1,000-pound-per-day Eskimo ice chipper. Options include Furuno Omni sonar, Seakeeper 18, two Phasor generators, and a full tower by Palm Beach Towers.
Michael Rybovich & Sons 70

- Draft: 5’7″
- Displ.: 90,000 lb.
- Fuel: 2,000 gal.
- Power: Twin CAT C32B
Hull No. 9 from the noted South Florida builder is now underway for an experienced owner who continues to release more than 100 blue marlin each year. To advance that legacy, this boat will spend most of her time in the Virgin Islands and is constructed to exceed every requirement of a hardcore fishing program. The oversize cockpit will be home to ample freezer space for traveling, tackle storage, an insulated ice bin, an insulated transom fish box/livewell, and in-deck connections for removable livewells. The four-stateroom layout features a king master, a queen VIP, and a designated tackle room that is accessible through the crews’ quarters. She’s set to splash in 2024.
Titan Custom Yachts 63
- Displ.: 89,000 lb.
- Fuel: 1,950 gal.
- Power: Twin MAN V-12 2000
According to Titan owner Russ Garufi, the plan is for Hull No. 12 to be a company demonstrator. “We want a boat available to give customers the opportunity to feel the solid ride of a Titan if they are interested in our product,” he says. Once again teaming up with Roop Yacht Architecture and Design, the new 63 will be powered by MAN V-12s rated at 2,000 hp each, with an expected cruise of 37 knots and a top end of 44 knots. Mechanical features include a Seakeeper 18 and a Side-Power hydraulic positioning system with joystick, while the interior will offer three staterooms, three heads, and even custom-built canine sleeping quarters.
F&S Boatworks 82
- Beam: 21’9″
- Draft: 5’5″
- Displ.: 115,000 lb.
- Fuel: 3,350 gal.
- Water: 500 gal.
Scheduled for completion in fall 2024, You Never Know is the third consecutive 82-footer under construction by F&S Boatworks in Bear, Delaware. The boat has been designed to meet the specific requirements of an experienced owner and captain who fish the competitive Gulf Coast tournaments. Key features include a five-stateroom, five-head layout, a custom hardtop by Palm Beach Towers, a pair of Onan 29 kW gensets, two Seakeeper 18s, a fully custom wake-adapted drivetrain, high-capacity refrigeration/freezer units, Furuno Omni sonar, and a pressurized baitwell system with tuna tubes in multiple locations. The twin 2,600-horsepower MTUs are expected to deliver a 36-knot cruise, with a top speed of more than 43 knots.
- Displ.: 125,000 lb.
- Fuel: 2,850 gal.
- Water: 450 gal.
With classic Merritt styling features—from her sleek sheerline, raked stem and classic Florida tumblehome—the 77 is founded on an advanced high-performance bottom design from Roy Merritt and naval architect Michael Peters, which produces a 36-knot cruise speed with a top end of 45 knots. As with all Merritt boats, access to pumps and air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment is unmatched with open, easy-to-service placement. This is one of the most technologically advanced boats on the water today, with a pedigree and performance that will turn heads anywhere she roams.
Ritchie Howell 64
- Beam: 18’4″
- Draft: 4’10”
- Displ.: 88,000 lb.
- Water: 250 gal.
Next up for Ritchie Howell is not one, but two 64-footers for two different clients—one located on the East Coast and one in the Gulf. Both builds share many similarities, including the newest propulsion option from Caterpillar—the 2,000 hp C32B engines—which will produce a cruise of 36 knots and a top end of 45 knots. The interiors will offer three staterooms, three-and-a-half heads, with satin teak throughout, plus teak covering boards and cockpits, Seakeepers, Furuno Omni sonars, Starlink-integrated hardtop designs, and plenty of custom features per the individual owners’ requests.
Bayliss Boatworks 60
- Displ.: 82,500 lb.
- Fuel: 1,650 gal.
- Water: 225 gal.
Next to hit the water at Bayliss Boatworks is Sequentis , a 60-foot walkaround that will be powered by two MTU 12V 2000 M96X engines and built specifically for the South Florida live-bait sailfish-tournament circuit. In collaboration with her owners and crew, the walkaround is truly one-of-a-kind from bow to stern, with 360-degree access to livewells and pitch-bait tubes, plus drying storage for kites, innovative tackle storage throughout, multiple livewells, and a cockpit rocket launcher all included in her design. Sequentis will also have the usual Bayliss standards such as a Seakeeper 18, Furuno Omni sonar, and the builder’s proprietary freshwater cooling system.
Daniels Boatworks 46
- Beam: 14’6″
- Draft: 3’2″
- Displ.: 35,000 lb.
- Water: 100 gal.
- Power: Quad Mercury 600 hp
Hull No. 4 for this up-and-coming builder in Wanchese, North Carolina, is a 46-foot walkaround express powered by quad 600 hp Mercury outboards. Built to cruise and fish hard along Florida’s southwest coast and the Florida Keys, where the outboards will provide shallow-draft capability, this walkaround will also allow for a wide variety of angling adventures for the owner and his family. Options include a 12 kW Onan generator with a separate diesel fuel tank, Simrad sonar and a Seakeeper 6. Top speed should approach 60 miles per hour, all in a beautifully appointed custom-built package.
Vilano Boatworks 65
- Beam: 19’3″
- Fuel: 2,100 gal.
- Water: 350 gal.
- Power: Twin CAT C32A or C32B
Vilano, a custom builder based in St. Augustine, Florida, brings to the table a second original design by naval architect Erwin Gerards. Hull No. 2 is a triple-planked, cold-molded build that features a three-stateroom, three-head layout, designed for functionality. With Caterpillar C32A engines, the builder anticipates a top speed of 41 knots. The boat is being commissioned by a well-established team that knows how to make the best use of the 130-square-foot cockpit. She will displace approximately 95,000 pounds, draft 5 feet, 6 inches with shallow prop pockets, and feature a fuel capacity of 2,100 gallons. Hull No. 2 is expected to hit the water in summer 2024.

Jeanneau, new sailboats for 2024
Since its creation in 1957, Jeanneau has consistently placed innovation at the heart of its ambition to accompany all who love the sea in their pursuit of happiness and sensations on the water.
Sailboats of character imbued with timeless lines and undeniable success (such as the Sangria, Fantasia, JOD 35, Pierre 1er, Sun Odyssey 54DS…), have served as markers in the evolution of the brand.
Jeanneau continues to pursue its mission, offering superior functions and ergonomic design solutions to enable all to experience the pure, simple pleasures of the sea aboard Jeanneau sailboats.
Since her world premiere at the Dusseldorf Boat Show in January of 2023, and with her unique concept, the new Jeanneau Yachts 55 has been a resounding success. A full two thirds of the interior space is dedicated to her owners, as a true private apartment. Her dual cockpit facilitates handling and manoeuvres, all while affording maximum comfort at sea. The impressive aft sundeck is an invitation to relax and enjoy moments of pure serenity.
At the end of July 2023, the new Sun Fast 30 One Design will be presented in a world premiere in Cherbourg for the occasion of the Rolex Fastnet Race. This new One Design, supported by three major players in offshore racing (RORC, UNCL, and STC), is constructed by Jeanneau at its shipyard in Cheviré, France, in collaboration with Multiplast. This 30-foot sailboat, featuring exceptional performance, marks a major advance toward environmentally responsible cruising: this is the first production-model boat entirely created from recycled and recyclable resin!
Sun Fast 30 One Design: pure performance
The design project for a 30-foot One Design, conceived by the Union Nationale pour la Course au Large (UNCL), the governing body for offshore racing associated with the Yacht Club de France, the Royal Ocean Racing Club (UK), and the Storm Trysail Club (US), had the principal objectives of encouraging offshore racing, making sailing more accessible, and initiating a new generation.
The partnership of VPLP Design/Multiplast won the highly competitive international call for projects. United by common values, Jeanneau and Multiplast naturally partnered to combine their respective savoir-faires.
The ecosystem of the three big international sailing clubs will allow the Sun Fast 30 One Design to enter a programme of races between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, as well as transatlantic races with mixed double-handed crews and crews of four people.
At a reasonable price (strict One Design, with limitations on materials and number of sails, electronics and autopilot), the Sun Fast 30 One Design features ease of use (simple deck plan) and transport (under 3 metres in width). Everything you need to begin offshore racing.
In the tradition of Jeanneau race boats that have made sailing history in France, notably on the Tour de France à la Voile (Rush, Sélection, JOD 35) and in the greatest sailboat races (Pierre 1er, Fleury Michon), the Sun Fast 30 One Design marks the beginning of a new era.
Elium® resin: recycled and recyclable
The hull (solid laminate) and deck (sandwich) of the Sun Fast 30 One Design are constructed according to the vacuum infusion moulding method with Elium® thermoplastic resin, developed by Arkema. This resin demonstrates superior mechanical performance to that of thermosetting polyester resin, with the unique and revolutionary additional property of being recyclable. Constructed with 20% recycled resin itself, Elium® resin enables the construction of fully recyclable boats.
With the Sun Fast 30 One Design, Jeanneau takes its furthest step ever into environmentally responsible development and the circular economy, launching the first recyclable production model boat. A sizable innovation.
Deck plan and rigging: double-handed or fully crewed, simplicity for sensations of speed
Clearly defined hull chines marked by a rounded bow (semi-scow), a cast-iron keel fin with a lead bulb and a 2-metre draught, twin rudders, planing surfaces, rigidity and stability are all strong points of the Sun Fast 30 One Design.
Boasting a carbon mast and reasonable sail plan, this new One Design is responsive and easy to handle, delivering pure performance. Equipped with a square-top mainsail, a reefable J2 and J3, it can carry a downwind gennaker and two asymmetric spinnakers (A2 and A4) on a retractable bowsprit to adapt to a wide spectrum of sailing conditions.
The deck plan of the Sun Fast 30 One Design, with its long, open cockpit and perfectly adapted deck hardware, facilitates handling and manoeuvres for a double-handed or full crew.
Above all else, this 30-foot One Design is built for the pleasure of sailing and for thrills at every angle, according to the strictest rules of One Design.
With a limited number of sails and materials, One Design electronics, corresponding centre of gravity, weighing of finished boats, rigorous construction, the One-Design culture is part of Jeanneau’s heritage. The Cheviré production facility (formerly JTA, Jeanneau Techniques Avancées), a true R&D laboratory for the shipyard, continues the pursuit of perfection in the tradition of the Rush, Sélection, JOD 35…
Two versions in one hull
The desire to initiate and encourage vocations in offshore racing has resulted in two versions of the Sun Fast 30: One Design and Club. There are four major differences between the two:
- A carbon or aluminium mast, a mainsheet track or Y-bridle, a galley module, chart table, and saloon are present in the One Design version, as well as the onboard electronics pack.
- The Club version, which is more streamlined and more financially accessible, allows amateurs access to offshore racing without the need for the high-end equipment of the One Design version.
In the two versions, as standard features, the Sun Fast 30 is equipped with a head and holding tank, two fold-down bunks, and a 10 HP Nanni diesel engine.
With this new Sun Fast 30 One Design, Jeanneau and Multiplast enable sailing enthusiasts, amateurs, and experienced competitors alike to feel the thrill of pure performance.

SAIL’s 2024 Best Boats Awards
Published on January 2nd, 2024 by Editor -->
SAIL magazine revealed its annual Best Boat Nominees in October 2023 and now has selected the 2024 winners:
Every year, boatbuilders of all types submit their new models to be nominees in the SAIL Top 10 Best Boats contest. We start reviewing these as soon as they are available, sometimes traveling throughout the country or even overseas to examine the boats, talk to designers, builders, and dealers, and most important, to take these boats out sailing.
When it’s possible, we like to spend at least a day onboard—more if that’s feasible—to sail the boats as we believe potential owners would want to sail them. This year, one of our reviewers helped deliver a boat from Annapolis to Connecticut; another spent all day racing and then well into the night sailing on a racer-cruiser model. The more hours we can get onboard the better, because it gives us a truer sense of how a boat is meant to be sailed than a short trial could.
Along with sailing and handling characteristics, we look at systems innovation and installation, design, ingenuity, construction quality, deck and interior layouts, and ergonomics. We know that every potential owner has a unique wish list, so we try to include as many boats as possible, from 60-foot multihulls to trailerable daysailers. – Full report

- Upcoming 2024 charter boats: dive into the latest fleet
If you're craving the latest sails and a sleek hull design that glides over the water effortlessly, book one of these stunners. We've handpicked 18 exciting offerings from top shipyards.
Why (not) rent the latest model boat?
Before we delve into the specifics of the latest charter offerings, let’s examine the pros and cons of renting a brand-new boat:
- New vessels usually boast flawless finishes. If you have a penchant for vintage charm and a few nicks and scrapes, you won't find it here. Likewise, if DIY repairs are your thing, a new boat won't offer much scope.
- The latest designs, chic interiors, and state-of-the-art tech are hallmarks of new boats. If an outdated navigation system or summer without AC is your idea of sailing, then a new boat might not be for you.
- Occasionally, a new boat might not yet have its sea legs. This can mean familiarizing yourself with it during those first moments at the dock, potentially causing anxiety for some.
Take all of the above with a grain of salt. Every charter boat should be handed over to you in perfect order . Although newer and more expensive boats tend to be given a bit of extra care by charter companies. But definitely do a thorough inspection of the boat at check-in. Refer to our complete guide to inspecting your boat at the marina.
YACHTING.COM TIP: Be cautious! In rare instances, a boat promised for delivery in the next year might face delays from the shipyard, forcing clients to make alternative arrangements. While this risk is minimal when opting for the newest vessel, it's something to bear in mind. Rest assured, we'll always find a solution to your satisfaction.

Want to buy a yacht in 2024? Here’s what you need to know about the used boat market
- Will Bruton
- February 9, 2024
Since 2020 and the pandemic the yacht market has been busier than ever before, but has the madness finally come to an end?
For anyone who’s been holding off buying, or selling a yacht things have shifted. “The reality is that the market is not how it was this time last year. We’ve reached a level of relative normality now. Today we are seeing a slower moving market, with more carefully thought-through sales and purchases,” explains broker Alex Grabau.
“Clients are expressing what they are looking for with a view to it coming on the market in the future, while sellers are taking their time – either holding off selling or coming to the market with a higher price and being prepared to wait a little longer to sell. Those holding onto boats are having an influence on pricing staying high.”
In other words, while time scales have slowed down a little and buying a yacht is no longer quite so frenzied, prices are holding firm.
Another big change of recent years noted by Viktor van Savooyen, founding partner in yacht buyer consultancy Yacht-Match, is an increase in first-time buyers that has brought new clients into the market, often with less knowledge or experience. This is a change he believes is set to stay.
“We have seen more clients seeking expertise to help them navigate the complexities of a first-time boat purchase and ownership, but equally many of them have ambitious plans. One customer recently purchased a Nautitech Open 40 through us – their first sailing yacht, learned to sail it with our help, then covered 8,000 miles across the Mediterranean in their first season.
“Inexperience is not necessarily an indicator of a lack of commitment to big plans, they just want more help to get there. While the market has slowed, that new – often younger – customer, will remain a feature.”
A Nautitech Open 40 is a lot of boat for first-time buyers, but that does not put everyone off.
Ticket to ride
Alex Grabau believes he’s seen a parallel change amongst bluewater sailors over the past three years that looks set to stay. “One shift from the past three years appears set to remain: yacht buyers are embarking on bigger sailing adventures earlier on in life. The global pandemic has had a marked influence on how people see the time in front of them.
“Whether it be taking a sabbatical to go sailing, retiring early, or working remotely afloat, buyers are making that shift consciously and doing what it takes to make an adventure happen, committing to a high quality of life.
“Something that’s fuelled that is the yachting press explaining that it is something most people can do. The longstanding efforts of the World Cruising Club in breaking down the perceived barriers to ocean cruising has also contributed, and of course, the surge of YouTube channels promoting sailing as an accessible adventure.”

Rupert Knox-Johnston, broker at Oyster UK, has also seen a market almost exclusively fuelled by those with big sailing ambitions.
“Anything manageable by two, without the need for professional crew, has been in high demand. Even though buyers are making purchases with perhaps a little more consideration, they generally want an Oyster to fulfil big plans that have been in mind for a while. Many of our sales span over five years from the first point of contact to the boat being handed over.”
Oyster’s own Oyster World Rally continues to fuel sales for Rupert and his colleagues selling new yachts. “The rally is still wildly popular, largely because I think people can see how buying an Oyster unlocks access to that supported experience. It’s currently full for 2026 and has a waiting list for the departure after that and many are still coming to us seeking a yacht with that in mind.”
Demand remains keen for cruising yachts and multihulls
New world order?
“The market for used yachts has slowed, but I’m not sure it’s stagnating. Demand is still high for good quality boats, there’s just fewer of them about. Owners are holding onto them; perhaps that is partly in view of economic uncertainty. Of course, that becomes challenging when fewer boats are being openly marketed.
“What is very different from a year ago is the waiting times for a new yacht. We were seeing waiting lists of up to three years, particularly for multihulls. While the appeal of multihulls is showing no signs of abating, you’re now looking at under a year from the point of placing the order, which for those which want to move fast, is much more palatable,” explains Viktor van Savooyen.
“We’re also seeing market separation between regions. While the UK is quiet compared to how it was, yacht sales in the US for Oyster are flying now” explains Rupert Knox-Johnston.
It’s also something Alex Grabau has seen playing out between the UK and Europe. “What we have seen following Brexit is effectively the emergence of two different markets that sometimes intersect because, if you’re buying in Europe or the UK, there’s now the fundamental question of the status of the boat when it is delivered in either direction. A purchase by someone in Europe to use the boat in Europe, or someone buying in the UK, to use the yacht in the UK is a far simpler prospect; not that that’s how people want to use their yachts of course!”
Charter companies continue to order new yachts in large numbers to handle increasing demand: Dream Yacht Charter recently announced an order for 77 new catamarans.
It’s complicated
“Brexit remains frustrating for some transactions. While we’ve got used to some aspects of it, it remains challenging paperwork wise. Different EU states have different rules governing each transaction, while the issue of EU VAT paid, and being able to prove it, adds layers of complication. Proving where the boat was in February 2020 often underpins this. At the end of the day, it is the buyer that needs to be satisfied. That means providing a basket of evidence that is beyond reasonable doubt. Proof can be almost impossible,” explains Knox-Johnston.
For sellers, having a good body of evidence of where the yacht has been and when can make a transaction go through far more easily. “I’d really advise anyone to keep everything they can that proves movement of the boat, even if you’re not thinking about selling now! Fuel receipts, marina bills, boatyard work paid for; all can help prove the boat’s VAT status. It is also worth asking the marina the yacht was in when Brexit went through for a letter stating this.”
Picking up an Oyster will allow new owners to take part in the Oyster World Rally
A wild west?
With many first-time buyers in the market over the past three years, and a white-hot market stretching to accommodate them, new brokers inevitably began operating. “Sadly, what we have seen recently is a few yachts going back on the market, with the buyer now turned seller, refusing to even engage a broker after a bad experience. Trust has been eroded by a handful of bad people. A purchase or sale going wrong can be very sobering, not to mention expensive.
“Some of the brokers we saw start up over the past three years have not served their clients well, in some cases not doing the correct due diligence on behalf of their client or obtaining complete paperwork.
“That can rear its head many years down the line,” says Viktor van Savooyen.
For Alex Grabau, also deputy chair of The Association of Brokers and Yacht Agents, quashing myths around the roles of broker is something he feels strongly about.
“Our business is about much more than simply placing an advert for a boat and then taking the money. That’s the easy part.
“It’s having the technical understanding to deal with aspects such as title, VAT, registration and CE/UKCA, as well as having access to the best possible legal contracts (and being trained on how to use them), that will make the difference between a safe transaction for all parties and one which carries risk.
“A good broker wades through a lot of paperwork on behalf of their client, even more so after Brexit. It’s likely that the customer doesn’t see much of that work being done.
“A big part of the job is checking that every part of the sale is legitimate, all the correct documents are in place and, though it’s often forgotten, providing a client account for the transaction itself so that all parties are protected. Keeping those standards high is important,” says Grabau.

Azimut Seadeck 6 was "moored by the moon" in the swimming pool of the Bagni Misteriosi during Milano ... [+] Design Week 2024
Milan may have been overflowing with crisp design, stylish designers, and creative installations during Milano Design Week recently. But I’m pretty sure no other installation got more attention, or was harder to pull off than what Azimut Yachts achieved when they moored a 57-foot-long Azimut Seadeck 6 in the swimming pool of the Bagni Misteriosi .
The immersive installation was curated by AMDL CIRCLE and Michele De Lucchi that began as journey within the Bagni Misteriosi del Teatro Franco Parenti and culminated on the Azimut yacht moored in the shadow of a large moon. The goal was to invite visitors to rediscover the gentle relationship between man and nature as well as to testify to the fact that that a more sustainable future is now at Azimut.
Part of the Azimut installation at 2024 Milan Design Week
“The purpose of this installation was to involve visitors in the theater of life and arouse their imagination,” says Michele De Lucchi, Founder of AMDL CIRCLE. “It is only with our imagination that we can see a brighter future on the horizon, much more harmonious than today's present.”
Once through the historic entrance of the Palazzina dei Bagni Misteriosi, visitors were welcomed by a suspended atmosphere, in which the elements of the rooms dialogue with the installations to evoke the wonder of the natural world.

Images, sounds and scents evoked a dreamlike sea that was discovered through the labyrinth of doors of the old changing rooms at the beginning. Large sculptures, shells made with the innovative materials introduced by Azimut – discarded and regenerated fishing nets, recycled plastic (PET) and carbon – stand out like theatrical wings in the second room while, continuing the game of theatrical make-believe, the visitor climbed aboard the Seadeck 6 in a space where furnishings and materials are used to recreate the internal environment of the vessel, designed by Matteo Thun & Antonio Rodriguez.

The route culminated outside, offering a view from a terrace suspended over the water of a landscape in which Seadeck 6 is moored, the embodiment of the route traced by Azimut to reduce CO2 emissions and energy consumption.
In fact, according to Azimut, the yacht offers a reduction in emissions of up to 40% in an average year of use. Mirrored shingles in shiny galvanized steel form a large disk inspired by the moon, whose play of reflections emphasizes the dynamic effect of the pattern of light, evoking the lunar glow.
“The difference can and must be made here and now,” explained Giovanna Vitelli , Chair of Azimut|Benetti Group. “Not with distant promises of a world to come or with a superficial approach to the topic of environmental sustainability. The boat in the swimming pool of the Bagni Misteriosi is the emblem of our commitment: concrete, measurable and always present."
And maybe best of all. It was cool. Because let’s face it, change for the better is much easier to pull off when the alternative is cooler than what’s gone before.
Stay tuned.

Evo was commissioned by experienced seafarers, who, after owning several high-performance yachts, decided it was time to create a bespoke blue-water cruise for their family. The owners enlisted Van der Valk for the build to ensure premium quality, the Dutch yard says. SFG Yacht Design and Fancy by Dada penned EVO’s sleek exterior, after which Cristiano Gatto Design added more length and angles to the profile. The Italian film also designed the interior. The naval architects at Diana Yacht Design and Ginton Naval Architects also helped refine the design.
Made entirely from aluminum, Evo features a round-bilge, fast-displacement hull that promotes planing. Powered by two MTU engines, the vessel is expected to have a top speed of 24 knots, a cruising speed of 19 knots, and a range of 2,200 nautical miles. Built to ABS class, the yacht will also meet the latest IMO Tier III emissions regulations, meaning it can cruise in protected waters.
“Project Evo is a fine example of how clients can come to Van der Valk with their own exterior designers without having to reinvent the wheel with a new hull, safe in the knowledge that their yacht will excel in terms of performance, speed, and stability,” Bijker adds.
Bigger and better, indeed.

Spectator boats at large sailing events could be impacting marine wildlife with noise pollution
by Heriot-Watt University
New research led by Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, suggests that international sailing events should try to reduce the underwater noise they create to avoid impacting marine wildlife.
Scientists at the University's Institute of Life and Earth Sciences found that noise from large groups of spectator boats—some of them with hundreds of motorized vessels—was loud and sustained long enough to potentially impact marine mammals, fishes, and invertebrate species that rely on their intricate hearing systems for processes including foraging, communication, reproduction, orientation and avoiding predators.
The research, published in the journal Marine Pollution Bulletin , involved collecting and measuring acoustic recordings around racecourses during the 36th America's Cup in the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand in 2021. The international yachting race, which is the world's largest competitive sailing event and has been staged since 1851, attracted almost 300,000 in-person visitors.
Matt Pine, an Honorary Research Fellow at Heriot-Watt's School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society, where the Institute of Life and Earth Sciences is based, led the research. He said, "When sailing events like larger regattas are being planned, the potential impact of underwater noise pollution from spectator flotillas should be considered, especially for events happening in ecologically significant areas.
"Underwater noise from motorized vessels is particularly problematic, as studies have found it increases stress levels in many marine species and can reduce their success in reproduction, foraging and social interactions. Noise pollution can also cause some species to avoid or move away from their original habitats."
All large, internationally renowned sailing events should make greater efforts to limit the potential impacts of underwater noise from motorized vessels, the researchers conclude. Thousands of sailing regattas are staged around the world every year. In the UK in 2024, for example, sailing regatta events include the Scottish Series regatta on the West Coast of Scotland in May, the Plymouth Regatta in July, and Cowes Week, one of the UK's longest-running sporting events, in the Solent off the Isle of Wight in early August.
An estimated 10,468 vessels attended the three different race events of the 36th America's Cup between December 2020 and March 2021, the researchers say. Up to 1,300 vessels a day also sailed to and from the racecourses at regular intervals.
The scientists found that sound level increases were observed several kilometers beyond the racecourse boundaries and remained high well beyond the duration of the races themselves. On a typical race day, sound levels between 6 am and 9 pm around the racecourse were 5 decibels higher than on a "control day," when no racing took place. This is roughly more than three times normal sound energy levels. Sound energy is essentially the vibration caused by sound.
Protection measures taken by event organizers, such as restricting spectator's vessel speed to 5 knots to reduce the risk of striking marine mammals, will also have helped reduce underwater noise levels, the researchers acknowledge. But further improvements are needed.
These could include introducing designated areas where spectator vessels are encouraged to congregate. Marine mammal detection platforms could also be used to identify visually or acoustically when animals are near spectators, so best noise practices could be adopted or monitored.
Other suggestions include staggering the exit of vessels to break up spectator flotillas into smaller groups and encouraging spectators to watch from on-land locations. Spectators could also be given guidance on measures or behavior changes to reduce the amount of noise from their vessels. For example, avoiding sudden speed changes and turning off echosounder navigation devices while the boat is idling.
Matt Pine is a marine scientist specializing in ocean bioacoustics—the science of how sound affects animals. He has a Ph.D. in Marine Science from the University of Auckland in New Zealand.

New solar sail technology launches on Rocket Lab flight
A potential new way to travel through space launched aboard Rocket Lab’s Electron rocket from Launch Complex 1 located on New Zealand’s Mahia Peninsula.
The mission, named “Beginning of the Swarm,” put two payloads into a Sun-synchronous orbit. The flight lifted off at 22:32 UTC on April 23, 2024.
One of the two payloads aboard the mission is NASA’s Advanced Composite Solar Sail System (ACS3). The goal is to test a new composite that can be folded up inside something as small as a CubeSat and still deploy and remain rigid once in space.
For this test, the solar sail is designed to fit inside a 12-unit (12U) CubeSat, which measures approximately 23 by 23 by 34 centimeters (9 by 9 by 13 inches). This is comparable to the size of a microwave.
A solar sail involves deploying a large metallic sheet that acts like the sail on a sailboat. Similar to a boat, it uses a boom to extend the sails. Rather than using chemical or electrical propulsion, these sails use sunlight and solar wind to help push a spacecraft or satellite.
For this mission, flying the sail is objective number two. The first objective is to unfold the entire sail in approximately 25 minutes and see how well it holds up.

This is where a brand-new composite boom comes in.
Johnny Fernandez at NASA’s Langley Research Center told NSF in an interview that while extendable boom technology has been around for quite a while, it is only now that a small satellite deployment option, made from a polymer material enhanced with carbon fiber, becomes possible.
“By going ultra-thin on the material these days, we can use laminates [and] multi-layer composites that weren’t possible ten or 15 years ago,” Fernandez said.

While foldable booms were used as far back as the Viking Mars lander in the 1970s, they were primarily made of metal. That caused a problem when they experience prolonged exposure to the sun.
“The application of a metallic version has limitations with thermal expansion,” Fernandez noted. “It would deform like a taco-shaped structure.”
The same concern came into play when designing the NEA Scout mission, which flew aboard Artemis 1 but never made contact with ground controllers post-launch.
“Langley had looked at the structural stability, and when we looked at the thermal properties, it became clear that the booms would slowly deform making it unflyable, so that quickly turned into a different study to look into mitigation opening,” Fernandez said.
Another issue arose when looking at how the booms were extended. Fernandez noted that missions like NEA Scout had a membrane split into four, which exposed the metallic booms that could deform.
Teams work on the ACS3 solar sail, open with the new composite booms. (Credit: NASA)
That issue led to the switch to a single membrane. The issue then became where to place the booms and what material to use.
“We had to go from a quarter configuration to a single square to put the booms behind with the sail which will act as a sun shade,” Fernandez said. “That sparked interest to find thermally stable versions of those booms.”
Upon reaching its planned orbit, ACS3 will deploy solar cells, followed by the sail using the four new composite booms over the course of 25 minutes. The rate of deployment will be monitored by multiple cameras to look for efficiency and how well the shape of the solar sail is maintained.

Once unfurled, the square-shaped sail will measure approximately 9 meters (30 feet) per side.
That shape will continue to be monitored as testing begins on using the sail itself.
“If we’re able to deploy and tension that membrane and get that camera data during the event, that’s already a success,” Fernandez said. “The second objective is to use it.”
Another item they had to overcome was the deployment mechanism inside of such a small CubeSat.
As a result, this will only be a 40-percent scale prototype of what NASA plans to use in the future.
“It’s a test of a larger scale system, so we wanted to test the same type of materials that the larger boom structures are supposed to be using by using those same materials to fit into that CubeSat,” Fernandez noted. “We’re really close to the limit of that technology.”
Teams work on the CubeSat from which ACS3 will deploy. (Credit: NASA)
He mentioned that work is underway on versions six times as large as ACS3, and that the sail team is partnering with teams from DLR, the German space agency, to work on the physical deployment mechanism.
According to Fernandez, the technology is now already in use in the commercial sector, including licensing the boom for deployable communications antennae. However, he says NASA has a lot of interest in the material, especially when it comes to the Artemis lunar program.
“[NASA] is using the same type of roller structures to deploy towers on the surface of the moon, including solar panels or deployable antennas to communicate with [the] lunar gateway,” Fernandez said.
The parabolic dishes and reflectors being looked at for the Moon currently use mesh, which Fernandez says creates its own problems.
“Mesh reflectors are prone to dust issues on the Moon, so we wanted a solid surface, like a dish here on Earth…instead creating a parabolic dish that folds like an umbrella,” Fernandez said.
Having tested the materials on parabolic microgravity flights, the team is partnering with businesses and academia to make this mission successful.

Also along for the ride on this mission is the New space Earth Observation Satellite 1 (NeonSat-1). Developed by the Satellite Technology Research Center (SaTReC) at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Korea’s leading science and technology institute, the high-resolution optical satellite will be deployed as a technology demonstration for a planned future Earth observation constellation.
If all goes well with this prototype flight, KAIST plans to mass-produce ten additional satellites, bringing the total constellation to 11. The plan is to have all satellites in orbit by 2027.
Both satellites rode aboard Rocket Lab’s Electron rocket. Flying on the company’s fifth mission of 2024, the nine Rutherford engines on the first stage along with the vacuum-optimized version of Rutherford took care of most of the heavy lifting.

This mission included an additional third stage, known as a kick stage. This uses a Curie engine which can be ignited multiple times to help raise and circularize orbits.
Rocket Lab noted that this mission is unique, in that it placed two different spacecraft in very different orbits. So for this flight, the kick stage completed four different burns, including a final burn to speed up its destructive reentry post-satellite deployment.
NEONSAT-1 was deployed into a 520-kilometer (323-mile) circular Earth orbit inclined 97 degrees approximately 50 minutes after launch.
The second payload, ACS3, was deployed into a 1,000-kilometer (621-mile) circular Earth orbit also inclined 97 degrees. This deployment occurred approximately an hour and 45 minutes into the mission.

Princess Cruise just launched its biggest ship, the Sun Princess, with a 4300-passenger capacity. - Launching in July 2024
Royal Caribbean is introducing another massive cruise ship, Utopia of the Seas, which will soon become the second largest cruise ship worldwide, surpassed only by Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas. Utopia of the Seas is an impressive ship, with a passenger capacity of 6,700, a total weight of 237,000 tons, and 2,830 cabins.
It is part of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis class of ships featuring an impressive array of amenities, such as an indoor ice skating rink, a zip line, a FlowRider surf simulator, a rock climbing wall, a water park, a 259 ft Ultimate Abyss waterslide, an aqua theater, and neighborhoods filled with shops, restaurants, and bars. Cruise passengers will be entertained with Broadway-caliber shows.
Utopia of the Seas will sail on short getaway itineraries from Port Canaveral (Orland), offering 3-night weekend and 4-night weekday itineraries to the Bahamas and Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay. Check the prices for Royal Caribbean cruises .
Disney Treasure
- Launching December 2024
Disney Treasure, the latest addition to the Disney Cruise Line, will launch in December this year, marking a significant milestone after a decade since the launch of the last Disney cruise ship. The ship has 1256 cabins and suites, each designed with a theme inspired by Disney movies like Aladdin, The Lion King, and Pocahontas.
Passengers on the cruise are in for a treat, with exciting Broadway-style musicals and the Aqua Mouse, a thrilling Disney water ride. The themed restaurants on board are another highlight, featuring a Marvel-themed restaurant and a Mexican restaurant inspired by the movie Coco. And if that wasn’t enough, the ship also features a new Haunted Mansion-themed bar, resembling a classic ocean liner’s haunted drawing room, serving ghostly cocktails.
- Launching August 2024
Silversea Cruises is preparing to launch its newest ship, the Silver Ray, in the summer of 2024. The Silver Ray is the second Nova Class ship in the Silversea fleet, and it promises to bring ultra-luxury cruising to a new level. With a capacity of 728 passengers, the Silver Ray is a small ship that offers an all-balcony cabin experience, complete with walk-in closets and butler service.
But that’s not all. The Silver Ray is also an eco-friendly cruise ship, making it the first hybrid, luxury cruise ship to be completely emission-free while in port. It does this by using fuel cells and batteries to power the ship.
The Silver Ray will begin its maiden voyage season sailing in the Mediterranean, before repositioning to Fort Lauderdale, where it will offer South America cruise itineraries. Check the prices for Silversea cruises .

Amadeus Description
Built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard, and having undergone a total refit in 2018, S/Y Amadeus was designed to please the most demanding of yachtsmen. Built for smooth sailing, this elegant cutter rigged sloop has a sleek hull design, comfortably reaching top speeds of 12 knots and ensuring excellent sailing performance. S/Y Amadeus has just undergone this past winter (2018) a major refit such as total repaint top to bottom, new rigging (BSI Denmark), Novourania with new Evinrude 75hp outboard, Splash pool, new Bimini/Sprayhood/Awnings, new exterior fabrics and many other enhancements. In 2016 new “North Sails” were placed onboard. The yacht is maintained in excellent condition with a five-star crew year round. Her generous uncluttered teak deck offers plenty of space for sunbathing. The spacious and unique outdoor saloon has two tables seating upto 12 guests and is a perfect setting for outdoor dining and entertainment. Thanks to a special canopy and roll-up windows, the deck saloon has the added attraction that it can be fully enclosed, making it ideal for all weather conditions. Her forward area includes a splash pool and sun bathing area which can also be shaded with a removable awning. From the cockpit, a stairway leads to the light-filled spacious saloon offering ample seating, ideal for relaxing or enjoying a drink from the bar, and offers a formal dining area. This area also includes a LCD TV, entertainment center, ipod dock station, playstation, and is ideal for indoor activities. She can accommodate 10-12 guests in one full width master stateroom, two double bedded cabins each having one extra single bed and two twin bedded cabins which can be easily converted to double beds (upon request), thus, making her the only 5 double bedded sailboat in the Greek market. She also has a nice selection of toys which include water ski (adult and children), tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod and snorkeling gear.

E-Motion Rudder Drive, an electric engine with… the Propeller installed into the Rudder
Hanse Yachts introduces E-Motion Rudder Drive – an interesting propulsion type, with a special folding propeller….
An electric engine and a folding propeller have been installed into the rudder shaft, replacing the combination of diesel engine and sail drive. As a result, the propeller thrust is in line with the rudder position. This enables turning in the smallest circles or rotating around your own keel; it could be a perfect solution for maneuvering in narrow ports.
Making 4.5 knots with calm seas, the new Hanse 315 equipped with four lithium-ion batteries has a range of up to to 30 nautical miles – enough for all European inland waters and many coastal waters. At lower speeds, the range is significantly increased. The Rudder Drive can also be used with two batteries if a shorter range is required. The maximum speed is 6.1 knots – nearing the maximum speed of the diesel version.
The quiet Rudder Drive is also lightweight: 100 kg less than the diesel saildrive option. The Rudder Drive does not require a hole through the hull, lowering the resistance while sailing. The electric drive’s simplicity means less maintenance, as well.

From a standstill position, the yacht immediately starts to turn without having to pick up speed first. In addition, you enjoy all benefits of an electric engine. It will be the future?

Hanse 460 review: First in a new range
- David Harding
- January 26, 2023
The Hanse 460 is the first in a new range of Hanses. From new designers, she is already a big hit, with over 200 sold and a European Yacht of the Year win to its name. David Harding reports
Product Overview
Price as reviewed:.
For some of us, sailing has always been about the functional and fundamental. We enjoy sailing for sailing’s sake. But today people want so much more from a boat and, in many respects, today’s yachts undoubtedly offer a lot more and the Hanse 460 attempts to do just that.
What you might loosely call the mainstream European builders of family cruising yachts have been following this path for some time, making each generation of designs bigger and plusher than the last. For Hanse in particular, it has been a rapid evolution from the small, basic and functional to the large and luxurious.
This latest Hanse is the first to be designed by Berret-Racoupeau. After the earliest models, which used the moulds of discontinued, slim-hulled Scandinavian designs, every Hanse has been designed by Judel/Vrolijk in what became one of boatbuilding’s most enduring and successful partnerships.
In line with modern trends, each new wave of Hanses has been higher, wider and more voluminous than the last. Founder Michael Schmidt never lost sight of the performance side, however. For all their growing girths and towering topsides, Hanse has always made boats that sail – competitively-priced, high-volume cruisers but with easy handling (self-tacking jibs were used from the early days) and better performance than many of the alternatives.

The Hanse 460 is different. Very different. The first model from a new alliance with the French designers, it promptly won the European Yacht of the Year as the best Family Cruiser for 2022. A Hanse 510 version now follows.
The big question was whether Hanse had managed to do something different while retaining the qualities that its owners had traditionally sought.
At a glance, the Hanse 460 looks sleeker and sportier than earlier models; more angular, with a reverse rake to the bow and a pronounced knuckle running to about half-way aft. In Hanse tradition there are no hard-angled chines but, in this case, a pronounced soft chine towards the stern. In plan view you see full forward sections which, combined with the broad stern, generous freeboard and ample beam, hold the promise of enormous interior volume.

At the other end, a moulded bowsprit projects the anchor clear of the stem and provides an attachment point for an outer forestay which can carry a reaching headsail. Large windows in the topsides help to break up the high freeboard.
Scale those topsides and you’re faced with an expanse of wide, flat deck and coachroof. Moulded bulwarks edge the side decks to help keep feet where they belong should you venture forward when the boat’s heeled. Otherwise what stands out is the uncluttered appearance – lines are led aft beneath separate mouldings – and the plethora of deck hatches hinged every which way, including one that opens to reveal a large bow locker.
There was certainly nothing to complain about in the performance and handling department. We slipped along very nicely on a flat sea in 12-14 knots of wind, clocking around 7.5 knots with the apparent wind at just under 30°, and tacking through around 80° by the compass.

Enjoyable sailing
Weather helm was slight and the load on the wheels increased relatively little if I tried bearing away with the sheets pinned in, the single rudder providing plenty of grip. Provoked in the opposite direction, she coped well when pinched mercilessly and also when thrown into tight spins, only stalling briefly.
At least in the flat water and modest breeze we encountered, the cockpit worked well. In any wind and seaway you would be pleased to have the optional second table to port as a bracing point. At the helm stations you have a comfortable perch outboard of the wheel or, for energetic downwind sailing when you might need both hands, behind it. The Jefa linkage is light and direct, giving a good feel from the rudder. On the starboard side you can wind down the bifurcated backstay when extra headstay tension is needed.

Today’s cockpits are no longer just places from where you control the boat. Controlling the boat in itself is so much easier anyway, especially if – as most owners of the Hanse 460 will – you upgrade to electric winches, electric in-mast reefing and electric furling for the genoa on the outer forestay.
Other push-button options are for the hinge-down bathing platform and the cockpit tables (either side or both), which can be lowered to create large lounging areas. Alternatively there are fixed tables, as we had on the port side. A wet-bar can be added between the helm seats. It’s all part of making the cockpit a multi-function space in which every part can serve a variety of purposes. Cockpit stowage is in the form of a half-depth locker each side and – a first for Hanse – a dedicated liferaft locker right aft to starboard. With the electric-lowering option for the starboard table comes an extra moulded seat pod, which provides readily-accessible shallow stowage forward of the starboard helm and would be good to have for that reason alone.
Portlights and windows flood the saloon with natural light. Photo: HanseYachts/Nico Krauss
Moving about the deck and cockpit, and from one to the other, is easy in good weather. The wide open spaces let you simply stroll around – or lounge if you’re so inclined. Then again, they tend to present more of a challenge when a boat’s bouncing and heeling.
Lifestyle choices
Externally, the hull lines clearly differentiate the 460 from her earlier stablemates, but down below it’s a world apart. It’s certainly a more classy finish than we’ve seen before from Hanse; restrained in tone and a level above what we have become used to. Berret-Racoupeau is one of relatively few yacht design studios to have its own interior-design division.
Stateroom forecabin has generous stowage above and below the bed. Photo: HanseYachts/Nico Krauss
A host of interior layouts is available, from three to five cabins, up to four showers and from six to 10 berths. About the only constant is the presence of twin double cabins in the stern. Otherwise you can have different arrangements in the bow (cabins and heads) and amidships with a long or short linear galley and a bunk cabin or utility room to starboard where our boat had a chart table and heads compartment.
Details include backrests that hinge down in the saloon to provide trays and drinks-holders. You can press a button to lower the table, press another to pop up the TV from its central pod, and settle in for the evening.
Down here it’s all about sight-lines, integrating the different areas so no one feels left out, and ensuring that, as in the cockpit, every part of the layout performs multiple functions. In practice it creates a thoroughly pleasant and remarkably light environment.

Sometimes you come across a boat that makes you realise not only that yacht design has changed irrevocably, but also why it has changed and why it’s not going back. The Hanse 460 is unquestionably such a boat. How the crew lives aboard and moves around, both above and below decks, has clearly been thought about in the context of modern lifestyles. And this boat exudes style. If you like the fundamental design, you will be able to tailor many of the options and details to suit your tastes. A yacht like this is unlikely to slice to windward in heavy weather as comfortably as, say, a first-generation Swan 46, but most people aren’t really interested in that these days. I suspect the new Hanse will prove to be a pretty quick and competent all-rounder nonetheless. Simple sailing? The technology is not remotely simple any more. But with the Hanse 460, the sailing itself is simple and can still be a lot of fun.

Technology cooperation for new sailing yacht drive
Rudder Drive, the new electric propulsion system for sailing yachts developed by Torqeedo together with the large-scale boat builder Hanse Yachts and rudder manufacturer Jefa, combines outstanding maneuverability and minimal weight with a powerful emission-free motor.
The core of this innovative concept is the proven and specially adapted Torqeedo Cruise 4.0 with folding propeller, designed in to the rudder blade itself. The streamlined system replaces the combustion inboard or saildrive and removes the need for a separate thruster on the new sailing yacht Hanse 315 e-motion rudder drive, which debuts at the end of October.
Outstanding maneuverability
Due to the unique rudder placement of the 4 kW (8 horsepower equivalent) Torqeedo electric motor, the motor can apply efficient, directional thrust. The Jefa rudder blade’s range of motion was extended to a total of 100 degrees. Demanding maneuvers can now be accomplished without a separate thruster. While motoring, the yacht can spin on its own axis – both forward and in reverse. While docking, the stern can easily be maneuvered into the proper position. This is highly useful in windy conditions or in narrow slips.
Exceptional endurance with minimal weight
Power generation while sailing
With integrated Torqeedo fast chargers, the emission-free version of the Hanse 315 is fully charged in just three hours. The batteries can be recharged at the dock or during sailing when the Rudder Drive’s folding propeller is used to generate power. Torqeedo is the only manufacturer of electric boat propulsion systems offering industrial engineering, complete system integration and ISO 9001 certified serial production in Germany.
World launch at the Hanseboot Hamburg
For the first time, the new propulsion system will be presented installed in the Hanse 315 e-motion rudder drive at the International Boat Show Hanseboot 2016 in Hamburg. We are looking forward to welcoming you to the Hanse Yachts booth (hall 6, booth C108) on Sunday, October 30, 2016 at 2 pm.

Nominee Spotlight: Hanse 510
- By Andrew Parkinson
- October 5, 2023
The Berret-Racoupeau-designed Hanse 460 turned heads as a 2022 Boat of the Year nominee with a fresh take on comfort and volume but with an eye better sailing performance. The second model in the new range designed by the Berret-Racoupeau team, the Hanse 510 is set to make its US premiere at the 2023 Annapolis Sailboat Show—again as a Boat of the Year contender. From what our editors saw at the model’s recent showing in Cannes, the 510 is expected to be a formidable opponent in its category during CW ’s Boat of the Year judging.
As for dockside demeanor, this new range’s calling card appears to be a marked chine on the bow and an inverted bow to optimize sailing performance. According to the designers, attention was also paid to refining the hull shape to maximize interior space. The result is an easy-on-the-eyes 51-footer that values smooth sailing and fast, comfortable cruising.
According to the builder, the Hanse 510 offers unrivalled volume in the 50-foot class, courtesy of an optimized hull design. Chines at the bow and aft further allow for a slim waterline, ensuring prime performance and easy sailing.
The 510 is equipped with a large, practical dinghy garage, capable of holding an inflated dinghy of up to 8.8 feet; and the optional, newly developed Hanse Smart Tender System makes launching that dinghy as simple as “driving a car out of the garage.” Convenience and style dominate the interior. Even the crew cabin gets in on the volume action, as it’s much more than the typical (read: small) crew sleeping space—it is a room worthy of staying a while. The options list is lengthy, and the boat can be highly customized to meet owners’ needs.
“Expectations were high after the outstandingly successful Hanse 460, which has been awarded European Yacht of the Year,” says Hanjo Runde, CEO of HanseYachts. “The new Hanse 510 is the logical and consistent further development of the new concept. With her impressive volume, tremendously dynamic lines and countless options, she is redefining the 50-foot class. It is an easy to sail and enormously spacious private retreat.”
The key talking points of the 510 are numerous. A hydrodynamic design with a slender waterline promotes better hull speed. Chines fore and aft allow for a wider hull and more interior space. The reverse, wave-piercing bow makes the yacht pitch less in strong winds, while the pronounced bow chines keep the foredeck as dry as possible. On deck, the strategically placed helm position promotes total control of the Hanse 510 in any situation, with all navigation and performance information easily accessible, as well as all lines and even the electric winches on the port side. An optional hardtop shades the entire cockpit including the steering positions, and it blends seamlessly with the boat’s silhouette. It is also available in several colors and accommodates special lighting and solar panels. A fixed windscreen is another option.
The novel dinghy garage is capable of holding a dinghy of up to 8.8 ft without having to deflate it. Combined with the optional automatic comfort stairs and the newly developed Hanse Smart Tender System, a single crew member can safely and comfortably deploy the dinghy, including engine, in minutes.
Another novelty on the Hanse 510 is the easy-to-open life raft storage space in the cockpit. Situated just in front of the companionway, it’s easily accessible and has space for standard 8-person life raft containers. An optional wet bar with grill and sink is hinged at the stern so as not to absorb precious cockpit space.
The boat comes rigged with a self-tacking jib, and all lines run back to the cockpit for simple sail handling of the 710 sq. ft. mainsail and various headsails. The jib is 570 sq. ft. and the reacher measures 1,011 sq. ft., set up using a Solent-style rig on the custom bowsprit. Air draft of the deck-stepped mast is just over 77 feet above the waterline. Optional electric furling systems and winches make light work of handling halyards and sheets for the optimum in performance, short-handed sailing. The standard boat comes with a single, 80 hp saildrive, although an upgraded, optional 110 hp diesel is also available.
Within the interior, 14 well positioned opening hatches and eight opening windows and portholes permit maximum light and ventilation below deck. A long list of layout options are said to be available for the interior arrangement, from an “owner’s yacht” with a best-in-class sized master cabin, to a “charter yacht” with 10 berths, three bathrooms and an additional skipper cabin. The galley can be fully adapted to the owner’s needs as well: In addition to various refrigerator and freezer options, there is room for a wine cooler, dishwasher and a three-burner gas cooker plus an oven in the longitudinal pantry, which can be customized with a vast choice of colors and materials. Another option is a fully equipped navigation area with a forward-facing seat and a large salon table. The extensive options list, ranging from a washing machine in the utility room to flatscreens in the master cabin and salon, is crowned by the Flagship Package, which includes highest-end fabrics and materials, not to mention a “hidden” bar behind the folding backrest in the salon.
At its core, the Hanse 510 emphasizes a roomy cockpit, large but manageable sail plan, and overall performance that is easily managed by a couple, but perhaps what really sets the Hanse 510 apart from other sailboats in its class is the limitless level of customization the builder is willing to offer. The Hanse 510 also comes with a CE rating of A-12, so it is well suited for those who want to venture longer distances.

The little (electric) engine that could: The Port of San Diego unveils the nation’s first all-electric tug boat
The 82-foot eWolf expects to eliminate 3,100 metric tons of carbon dioxide

The nation’s first all-electric tug boat has docked at the Port of San Diego and expects to begin emissions-free operations in about a month.
Operated by Crowley Maritime Corporation , the 82-foot eWolf will escort ships entering and leaving the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal using electric power instead of diesel fuel, helping slash greenhouse gas emissions at the port and its neighbors in Barrio Logan and National City.
For the record:
1:58 p.m. March 13, 2024 This story has been updated to show the correct amount of government funding that went to the project.
“This is a big deal,” said port chairman Frank Urtasun at a news conference Monday. “This is new technology.”
Capable of speeds of up to 12 knots, the eWolf is powered by a 6.2 megawatt-hour main propulsion battery and two electric drives. The tug has thrust — also known as bollard pull in the parlance of the shipping industry — of 76.8 short tons, which is more powerful than the diesel-powered counterparts at the port.
Constructed in Alabama, the eWolf is equipped with two small generators for emergency use that allow the boat to travel longer distances at a reduced speed.
“Like an electric car, you step on the gas and it jumps,” said Paul Manzi, vice president of Crowley Shipping, based in Jacksonville, Fla. “All of the attributes that you have with an electric motor operation in a car or in an electric truck, you see here in the (eWolf) at massive scale. And it’s extremely quiet so when it pulls away from the dock you literally won’t hear any noise.”
The tug boat’s electricity will come from a charging station that is part of a microgrid facility equipped with two energy storage containers. Battery modules in each container have storage capacity of nearly 1.5 megawatt-hours.
Interconnected with the help of San Diego Gas & Electric, the charging station at the port is designed to allow the vessel to recharge quickly and reduce peak loads on the electric grid.
Operators plan to charge the eWolf overnight so it can perform its chores during daytime hours.
“This technology has individually been around for a while, but it hasn’t necessarily been integrated and optimized to all work together — and that’s kind of our role,” said Bruce Strupp, vice president at ABB Marine & Ports , the company that designed the boat’s propulsion system. “Some of the technology is our technology, some of it’s third-party technology, but we integrate it all together.”
The electric tug boat is expected to begin commercial operations at the port in mid- to late-April, depending on the completion of the charging station.
Officials at Crowley did not release the eWolf’s price tag Monday, saying only that it cost about twice as much as a conventional diesel-powered tug boat of comparable size.
But, Manzi said, the company expects the eWolf’s maintenance and operating costs will be “dramatically lower” than what’s spent on a diesel-powered tug boat because the electric model has fewer moving parts.
The entire project — the vessel as well as the charging station — received four grants that added up to $13.67 million, with two grants of $10.9 million from the San Diego Air Pollution Control District, one grant of just over $2 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and $750,000 from the federal government’s Maritime Administration.
In 2020, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order that directed state agencies to transition off-road vehicles — including tug boats — and equipment to 100 percent zero emissions by 2035.
By replacing one of the port’s diesel-powered tugs, the eWolf is expected to eliminate the consumption of about 35,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year. In its first 10 years of use, the electric tug boat is expected to reduce about 3,100 metric tons of carbon dioxide from the port and its surrounding areas such as Barrio Logan and National City.
“We’re trying to be good neighbors and trying to be able to help to reduce emissions here to help the electrification movement,” Urtasun said, adding that the port has spent about $130 million on various electrification projects.
Last year, the Port of San Diego became the first in North America to install a pair of all-electric cranes to load and off-load heavy cargo. Each 262 feet high, the cranes replaced an older crane that ran on diesel fuel. Together, the cranes expect to help the port reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 47 metric tons per year.

The all-electric-powered Candela P-12 ferry flies over the water on hydrofoils
I would never say “I told you so,” but…now that Candela , the world’s leading producer of all-electric-powered hydrofoiling boats, has just closed the largest funding round in the company's history, I might be bold enough to say…”I’m not surprised.”
That’s because I’ve been closely following the development of this wonderfully smart company’s hydrofoiling boats since I test flew a P-7 near their small and efficient shop in Stockholm in 2021. So, I’m really not surprised they just raised over $25 million to expand production of their game-changing P-12 ferry. And since yacht building powerhouse Groupe Beneteau is a key partner in the largest fundraising round Candela has ever completed it appears Candela’s brand of tech-controled hydrofoiling is about to go global.
“Our investment perfectly aligns with Groupe Beneteau‘s ecological transition objectives, scaling up innovative solutions for more sustainable boating and unparalleled experiences,” says Bruno Thivoyon, CEO of Groupe Beneteau, the world's largest boat manufacturer (15 factories, 9 brands, and more than 8,000 yachts built annually) with a total revenue of over $1.5 billion in 2023. “Candela’s technology, enabling significantly more efficient electric vessels, will transform waterborne transport into its next sustainable phase.”
A Candela P-8 and P-12 underway near Stockholm, Sweden
“We couldn’t be more excited about having Groupe Beneteau on board,” says Gustav Hasselskog, Founder and CEO of Candela. “As the leading global boat company, their trust is a stamp of approval for our technology to transform waterborne transportation. We’re excited for the possibilities ahead."
Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024
Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.
The new investment round will help to scale up production to meet demand for the recently launched Candela P-12, the world’s first electric hydrofoil ferry. The P-12 is the first fast and long-range electric ferry on the market. Its efficient hydrofoil technology cuts lifetime emissions by 97.5% compared to diesel vessels, while simultaneously allowing operators to save up to 50% in operating costs. Since it generates minimal wake, the P-12 has been granted exemptions from speed limits, as for example on its maiden route in Stockholm, where it from July will cut travel times in half compared to road transport and legacy diesel vessels.
And it’s pretty obvious Hasselskog and company are on the right track. According to some projections the market for electric vessels is expected to be worth $14.2 Billion USD in 2030.
“We’ve spent years developing the technological maturity, and now we’re fit for scaling to commercial vessels. As in any industry, the fastest-scaling company will dominate the market,” says Hasselskog.
The Candela P-8 and P-12 hardly make a ripple as they fly over the water on computer-controlled ... [+] hydrofoils
Other backers in the round include longtime investors EQT Ventures , Ocean Zero LLC , and Kan Dela AB. The new investment brings total funding since Candela’s inception to over $75 million.
“EQT Ventures has steadfastly backed Candela's vision to accelerate the shift towards fossil fuel-free lakes and oceans since 2021. The launch of Candela's P-12 vessels signifies a watershed moment in sustainable transport", says Lars Jörnow, Partner at EQT Ventures.
The only question is: when will we see a P-12 ferry here in the US?

Candela’s electric ferries multiply as the startup lines up $25M in new funding
Electric boat maker Candela is approaching cruising speed with $25 million in new funding and the first commercial deployment of its new P-12 ferry in New Zealand. The company has global ambitions for its highly efficient boats and has completed and delivered dozens of them — which is a lot in this industry!
Candela has been slowly upping the size of its vessels for years, starting with the considerably smaller C-7 and C-8 (noting the length in meters) — of which, as of this week, they have now produced a total of 70. The P-12, a ferry design that can handle up to 30 passengers, made its debut late last year .
Just last week, the P-12 was given its first assignment: ferry people around New Zealand’s Lake Manapōuri , a scenic destination but also, more importantly, the site of the country’s largest hydroelectric power station. And now staff at that station can get to work via clean-running boat rather than driving, which the companies estimate will save around 240 tons of emissions per year. It’s a start, and it will help keep the lake clean and quiet.
International interest in these boats is also evident in the participation of Groupe Beneteau, a more than century-old boating company that makes thousands of vessels yearly, in the funding round. Groupe Beneteau CEO Bruno Thivoyon expressed in the press release that investing in Candela makes sense as part of the company’s “ecological transition objectives, scaling up innovative solutions for more sustainable boating.”
Many legacy boating companies are embracing electric engines and next-generation tech; I spoke with the head of another major manufacturer, Brunswick’s Dave Foulkes, at CES about it. He said that the collaborations are fruitful because the small, growing companies need the income and reach, while the larger ones need ready-to-deploy tech. Like any other industry, you have to know when to buy and when to build, and big boating companies are happy to buy — or invest.
Candela’s boats use hydrofoils with electric engines mounted on the bottom to effectively fly above the surface of the water once they get past a certain speed, vastly reducing energy consumption — historically and understandably a sticking point for electric boating. The approach does necessitate a powerful autopilot to keep it balanced, and despite their assurances, I wonder about how they’d handle log collisions, but overall the advantages seem to outweigh the drawbacks.
I drove one over the summer in Seattle (watching closely for logs, rather common in Elliott Bay) and wished they would replace the gas-chugging fast passenger ferries with P-12s. Candela isn’t the only one pursuing this market, either; Navier is also attempting to woo coastal communities with the draw of quiet, energy-efficient transit and is currently shuttling Stripe employees around the Bay Area . And while Zin Boats has been quiet for some time, they are also nailing down markets for the next version of their vessel.
The $25 million round was led, as mentioned, by Beneteau, with participation from EQT Ventures, Ocean Zero LLC, and Kan Dela AB.
