Turquoise Blue - Fethiye / Kekova / Fethiye

Great boat saw so many pretty places the food was excellent and plentiful. However, I could feel the captains reluctance to follow the rout given and his comments were sometimes unkind about us asking to use the tender to go ashore, he said it’s not a taxi and I asked for help to put the side safes up as I couldn’t do it alone he said “ I do it” his attitude wasn’t the best sadly

A gulet is a wooden yacht usually built in Bodrum or Marmaris in Turkey that measures 20 to 30 metres in length on average. Handcrafted from mahogany, pine and teak, the gulets follow a design developed for these waters in Byzantine times, with a sharp bow, broad beam and rounded aft. They are stylish, graceful, fitted for comfort and full of character. We cruise in style along the spectacular coastline of Turkey for three days on a journey that promises Kodak moments at every turn.

Take advantage of our 7 day cooling-off period.

This tour is conducted at a medium-fast pace. Some long travel days may be required to complete this itinerary and you will typically spend two nights at each destination, with some one night stays required. This trip includes a mix of sightseeing and free time to explore at your own pace. You will be required to move about unassisted, including getting on and off vehicles, walking up and down stairs and some activities will be conducted on uneven or steep terrain. Day 1 Istanbul

Your small group tour through Turkey awaits! Prepare to be spellbound by this continent-straddling metropolis that the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans have all called home.

Upon arrival into Istanbul, make your own way to your centrally located hotel.

Check in: Passengers will be arriving at various times throughout the day from as early as 6am through to late evening. If arriving prior to standard check-in time, which is generally 3pm local time, you are welcome to leave your luggage with hotel reception and explore your surroundings until check-in becomes available, as there are generally no scheduled activities on Day 1 of the itinerary. The hotel may grant early check-in, however this is strictly subject to availability and at the hotels discretion.

Day 2 Istanbul

After breakfast, enjoy a fully guided tour of the only city to span two continents, visiting the Blue Mosque, St Sophia Museum, Topkapi Palace (including Hagia Irene) and the Hippodrome.

We follow in the footsteps of the city’s most famous ruler, Sultan Ahmed, and head to the district of Sultanahmet, within Istanbul's old city. The historic centre of Istanbul, here you'll explore the legacy of the Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires.

Take in the majesty of the sixth-century Hagia Sophia, whose stunning construction is said to have changed the history of architecture. When not erecting splendid buildings, the Byzantine Emperors loved a bit of entertainment and the Hippodrome of Constantinople was their stadium. Inspect some of the decorative statues and obelisks that remain, harking back to a time when this space would play host to thousands of chariot racing fans. Witness the majesty of the Blue Mosque before enjoying the evening at leisure to further explore Istanbul.

Day 3 Istanbul Gallipoli Çanakkale

One of the most emotionally touching places in Turkey, today we visit the WW1 Battlefields of Gallipoli including Lone Pine and Chunuk Bair Memorials, ANZAC Cove, The Nek, Johnston's Jolly, original trenches and tunnels. We'll spend a moment in quiet contemplation, looking down upon the rough hills and gullies that became the graveyard for so many thousands of young men from both sides. We’ll tour the former battlefields and find remnants of trenches used by the Turkish soldiers. Afterwards, we continue on to Canakkale.

Day 4 Çanakkale Troy Pergamon Selçuk

Step back in time today as we visit Troy and its famed Trojan Horse. Learn about the groundbreaking archaeological digs and how the site has baffled historians.

Afterwards we tour the magnificent acropolis of Pergamom. Its impressive temples and library made it a renowned cultural and political centre in its time.

Day 5 Selçuk Ephesus Selçuk

Absorb yourself in history today with a guided tour of Ephesus and a visit to the site of the Temple of Artemis. Feel the mystical atmosphere of the ancient city and theatre before continuing to the former Greek village of Sirince, famous for its fruit wines.

Carpet weaving has long traditions in Turkey and at the carpet village we learn how the carpets are made by hand and what determines their value.

Tonight, we will visit a local vineyard and learn about the local production. You will taste 3 local wines from the region at the garden of the vineyard and return back our hotel.

Day 6 Selçuk Fethiye Embark Gulet Cruise

This morning we will enjoy a display of locally handcrafted leather goods before heading to Fethiye for your gulet cruise, boarding in Fethiye Harbour around 15:00.

A gulet is a yacht usually built in Bodrum or Marmaris in Turkey that measures 20 to 30 metres in length on average. Handcrafted from mahogany, pine and teak, the gulets follow a design developed for these waters in Byzantine times, with a sharp bow, broad beam and rounded aft. They are stylish, graceful, fitted for comfort and full of character.

We cruise in style along the spectacular coastline of Turkey for the next three days on a journey that promises Kodak moments at every turn.

We enjoy some swimming and snorkeling in Turunc Bay or Tarzan Bay. We cruise along a few of the islands towards Tersane Island, with the ruins of a once very important shipyard.

PLEASE NOTE - These traditional gulets boats are not meant to be luxurious, but they are very comfortable. All cabins have double beds (maximum size of the bed is 180 cm) and the cabins are nicely appointed with private ensuites. Most of your time will be spent on deck enjoying the view. Gulets are traditional Turkish boats and do not have aircon. As they are wooden boats, they allow for much more air circulation and you have the advantage of the ocean breeze. Sailing on a gulet is a unique and memorable way to spend three nights!

IMPORTANT: Electricity supply is very limited. The electricity of most yachts runs at 12 V/24 V. Please consider this if you wish to bring battery-operated equipments. Electrical appliances may only be connected while the yacht is tied up to land.

Day 7 Gulet Cruise

After breakfast we depart for Cleopatra's Baths (Hamam Bay). Enjoy a swim in the ancient ruins of these Roman Baths. We then cruise to Sarsala Bay, a striking pine-surrounded bay. It is also a convenient starting point for a 45-minute hike to ancient Lissa, notable mostly for inscribed walls dating from the 3rd century BC rule of two of Cleopatra's Ptolemy forebears.

Bedri Rahmi Bay is our next stop, named after one of the first 'Blue Cruisers' who painted here in 1973 a fish on the rocks. Jump in the clear water or explore the island.

Day 8 Gulet Cruise

Today we cruise to the Yassica Islands. These tiny little islands don't have individual names. They are so small that no one has named them. The biggest one has a sandy beach and there is a small pool cape off the lagoon. We will then cruise to the tranquil area of Gocek Islands where we can swim, snorkel or just soak up some sun and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Enjoy a last swim at Red Island before we overnight in Fethiye Harbour.

Day 9 Disembark Gulet Cruise Pamukkale

After an early departure from the gulet, we'll head to magnificent white calcium terraces, known as Travertines, in Pamukkale where we also tour the ancient city of Hierapolis. Take a dip, amongst ancient columns, in the hot springs that were used in Roman times for their therapeutic Powers.

Day 10 Pamukkale Konya Cappadocia

After an early departure from the Pamukkale, we'll head to magnificent Cappadocia. En route, we will stop at the Mevlana Museum in Konya and Sultanhani Caravansary. On arrival in Cappadocia, spend the evening at leisure.

Day 11 Cappadocia

Optional Tour: Hot Air Ballooning Early birds have the option of taking a hot air balloon over the surreal Cappadocian landscape. The scene at sunrise is sure to take your breath away. Please note, this activity can only be booked locally. Please speak to your tour leader on day one to organise this (approximate cost €160pp).

This morning, find yourself a roof top cafe and enjoy the spectacle of the plethora of hot air balloons rising into the morning sky.

Marvel at the lunar landscape of Cappadocia today as we visit the Goreme Valley Open Air Museum and the fairy chimneys, and explore the many levels of an underground city. You'll see fascinating rock formations such as cones, peaks and fairy chimneys made from tuff – a light, porous rock formed by consolidated volcanic ash – as well as man-made cave chapels from early Christian times.

Day 12 Cappadocia Ankara Istanbul

We depart early this morning for the nation's capital, Ankara.

Here we visit Anitkabir, the mausoleum of the famed Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, before returning to Istanbul for our final evening in Turkey.

Day 13 Istanbul

As they say, all good things must come to an end. Today marks the end of your incredible tour through Turkey. At the appropriate time, make your own way to the airport to board your flight home.

Check out: Passengers will be departing at various times throughout the day. Standard hotel check-out times will apply no matter what time your flight is scheduled to depart. Check-out time is generally anywhere from 10am-12pm. You are welcome to leave your luggage at hotel reception and spend your final moments of free time exploring the area or alternatively please speak with hotel staff if you would like to extend your check-out time. Please note this service is subject to availability and will likely come at an additional cost.

If you are happy with the services provided, a tip is an appropriate way to thank them. While it may not be customary to you, it is of great significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels and inspires excellent service.

Over the years we have found that many of our travellers find the need for tipping to be both tiresome and embarrassing, especially if they don’t have the correct small change. The leader will keep a running record of all monies spent (except restaurant tips). The record can be checked at any time and any money remaining at the end of the tour returned to group members. This amount is usually €2-4 (AUD$3-6)  per person per day. This kitty does not include tips for your leader and crew.

You may also consider tipping your tour leader for outstanding service throughout your trip. The amount is entirely a personal preference; however as a guideline of €2-4 (AUD$3-6) per person per day can be used. Of course, you are free to tip as you see fit, depending on your perception of service quality and the length of your trip.

The Mediterranean Traveller

50 Shades of Turquoise – Boutique Sailing on Turkey’s Turquoise Coast

Turkey’s Turquoise Coast is made for exploring by boat with its raggedy limestone coast that plunges into the sea, scalloped with small bays, many of which are inaccessible by road. My first experience on board a traditional wooden Turkish sailing boat known as a gulet – backpacker-style, aged 19 – had marked the beginning of a lifelong love affair with sailing (one that has since seen me sail around the Med on various vessels including tall ship and ancient ships ).

But the memories of gulet sailing in Turkey stayed with me for their incomparable combination of turquoise seas, incredible food, and sense and being close to nature. I think this is because gulet trips tend to be slow and leisurely coastal cruises with plenty of swimming, and nights that are warm enough to sleep on deck and watch the stars.

Somehow, 15 years have passed since that first gulet trip. With many more sea miles under my belt, would I still love it (and Turkey) as much on my long-overdue return?

Let’s face it, revisiting beloved destinations is always a risk. But the Turquoise Coast was calling my name.

Gulet cruises in Turkey are ridiculously good value. That was true in 2004 and is still true today. The trips aimed at backpackers are the cheapest way to experience life at sea in the Mediterranean – if you want more information on these then check out my previous post ‘ Gulet Sailing for Backpackers ‘.

This time around though, I wanted to treat myself to something a little bit more luxurious.

SAILING WITH SCIC

Turkish evil eye charm

I tend to go on sailing trips where you get stuck in crewing, but last year I had various aches and pains at the time (getting old!) and fancied a proper vacation rather than a hands-on sail. I’d come across SCIC Sailing – a Dutch/English company with a small fleet of boats – on the travel blog Hey! Dip Your Toes In and was instantly smitten by the words ‘champagne and goat’s cheese’ in their brochure. SCIC is by no means the only company in this region of Turkey offering this type of gulet trip, but the little touches in their brochure stood out.

And their price was very competitive. Because the other big draw for me was the lack of single supplement – catnip to a solo traveller. As with hotels, cabin charters are often priced on the assumption they will be filled by a couple. This makes SCIC’s prices very appealing for a solo sailor – particularly when you factor in the inclusive food and drink. Unsurprisingly up to 50% of their passengers are solo travellers which ensures a sociable vibe.

(note: this was not a sponsored trip, I paid my own way)

SCIC calls itself a boutique sailing company. It’s not ultra-luxury, for that look at superyachts, but if you’re used to backpacking then it certainly feels luxurious. You could describe their aim as ‘ultra-relaxation’.

So what does paying extra for a nearly-luxury sailing trip get you, compared to the budget version?

  • A certain level of comfort and service. The boat was roomy with lots of padded seats and spaces suitable for ultra-relaxation. The sails are not just for decoration, they are put to use – whenever the wind is actually blowing. And there is AC, although you can only use it when the generator is on (not unusual for boats) and don’t expect it to be refrigerator-cold.
  • Food. It gets you a lot of food. Life on board feels like a continual banquet of delicious Turkish mezze. The food is insanely good, better than anything I had ashore, and mealtimes are a highlight. See also: cold beers/chilled rosé wine to hand at any time.
  • A different clientele. Whilst the backpacker cruises are teeming with tanned Aussies in their early 20s, on this boat I was the youngest by a few decades. There were only 7 of us, including one couple and several returnees. I’m sure there was just as much alcohol consumed on board as on the backpacker cruises – though maybe we were in bed a little earlier.

WHAT’S THE BOAT LIKE?

Wheel and aft seating area on the gulet

I sailed on Notus, a 24m long 6m wide traditional wooden Turkish boat. Cabins are ensuite with a double bed and a flushing toilet (I tell you, this is a true luxury after you’ve sailed on a replica ancient Phoenician ship with no toilet…). It even has a window that looked straight out onto the sea, which always seems to be a startling shade of turquoise. There was a crew of 3 including the cook, who somehow churns out endless meals from his galley. The anchor is dropped for mealtimes which are taken at the back (aft) of the boat. Comfy padded seating areas are found at both the front and back of the boat, as well as mattresses for sunbathing.

A note about air-conditioning: there is AC on the boat but it only runs when the generator is on. You can’t have it on all night. This is typical on sailboats.

DAILY ROUTINE

Sunrise near Oludeniz

At the start of the voyage, a rough itinerary is decided by the passengers and skipper. Our group was all in favour of sailing and swimming rather than seeing the sights ashore. I’ve been to this part of Turkey (I sailed on the Göcek-Göcek route) a few times so that was fine by me.

Our daily routine looked a bit like this: wake up and jump into the sea. Breakfast. Refreshing post-breakfast swim. Sail to another bay. Sunbathe. Jump in the water to cool off. Eat lunch. Swimming. Try not to sink from the volume of food you’ve just consumed. More sailing. Afternoon tea (yes). Swim. Take the paddleboard or kayak out if you’re feeling energetic, or swim to a cave. Drinks and nibbles. Maybe another swim before dinner. Try to find some room for dinner. Food coma. Perhaps a skinny dip once it’s dark if you’re feeling perky. Roll down to bed.

My highlight was the sunset stop one evening at Gemiler Island near Ölüdeniz, a tiny uninhabited island with impressive ruins, where we raced up to the top to watch the sun go down (with some cold beers of course).

Turquoise bay and ruins on Gemiler Island

And the time I saw a shoal of seven squid, ethereal and purple, whilst snorkelling.

And swimming each morning in a different bay of endless emeralds and teal.

I have to say that this ultra-relaxing style of trip was maybe a little too relaxing for me, and I didn’t think such a thing was even possible. By the end of the week, I was longing to stretch my legs and do some exploring (how did I even manage a year at sea? it’s a mystery to me now). However, if you are stressed and in need of hardcore relaxation then I can imagine this is just the ticket.

FINAL THOUGHTS

gulet sail hoisted

So what do I think of gulet sailing, 15 years on?

It’s still exceptional value, particularly since the Turkish Lira hit a rocky patch in 2018. It’s significantly cheaper than what you would pay for a similar trip over the water in Greece, and you get much more space (and food) to boot.

There’s a lot to recommend about exploring the Turkish coast by gulet sailing. One thing that I wasn’t so keen on was the amount of waste generated by the very generous – but bordering on slightly ridiculous – amount of food. It struck a strange note in these waste-conscious times.

It was also a little on the formal side for me. I’m used to crewing on boats so it felt a bit odd to be waited on and to dine separately from the crew. But this might not be a problem for your travel style.

The coastline is still just as spectacular, although it certainly feels busier – with lots of swanky Russian megayachts prowling the coast, as well as hundreds of other gulets. Don’t expect to have many bays completely to yourself, at least around Fethiye. If this is important to you then route options should be discussed before booking. Same goes if you’d rather focus on actual sailing.

But I reckon the best way to do this is to bring enough friends or family to fill the boat and charter the whole thing privately. That way you can tailor the activity levels, food, and formality to your liking – and it makes it easier to adapt to changing needs (and whims!).

What an excellent way to spend a week though.

Classic twin or double cabin

Meet at Bodrum Harbour and board your luxurious gulet in the afternoon. Your captain and crew will be waiting for you on board. Spend the first night on board in Bodrum Harbour or a bay close by.

Depart from Bodrum for the Gulf of Gokova, a stretch of the Aegean where the sea displays the most remarkable hues. The rugged coastline with its myriad small bays and harbors gives way to a stunning backdrop of pine-clad hills and mountains. The next destination is Cati Bay where we will spend the rest of the day and sleep under the stars. Cati is a beautiful natural harbor surrounded with pine trees, fantastic for swimming and walks through the pine forests.

After breakfast, leave Cati Bay to explore Yedi Adalar (Seven Islands), a chain of 6 larger and many small islands, fringed by coral reefs located very close to the shore. Each island has its own beauty, presenting you with incredible beaches, pine forests, or beautiful Styrax (or Sorax, sweet gum, liquid-amber) trees, which are native to this region, and have provided resin to make perfumes and incense since ancient times. The locals extract the sap from the sweet gum trees to produce Storax, which is used for medicinal purposes. At an American Chemical Society Meeting in 2006, chemists reported evidence that the seeds of the sweet gum fruit contain shikimic acid, the acid used to produce the main antiviral agent for fighting bird flu. There are many secluded beaches and coves here where you can enjoy swimming, kayaking & snorkelling. Our last stop in the Seven Islands region will be Kufre Bay.

Continue your voyage to Cleopatra Island, the site of the classical love-nest created by Mark Anthony for the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra. Here you find extensive archaeological remains scattered along one of Turkey's most breathtaking golden beaches. (Optional): Cleopatra's Island is like an open-air museum with its ruin-scattered beach, golden sand, and crystalline water. The inland area has a Dorian-style temple that Christians later turned into a church, a 1,500-person amphitheater reminiscent of the pre-Roman era, small buildings with domed roofs, cisterns colored red on the inside, and tunnels. The surrounding area is strewn with broken columns, capitals, and stones decorated with pictures and reliefs. The numerous knights; coats of arms suggest that the Knights of Rhodes used the island. Legend has it that Mark Anthony brought the sand here for Cleopatra from the deserts of North Africa. It is forbidden by law to remove even a few grains of unusual sand from this island. English Harbor: When you depart and sail along the islands southwestern coast, you will notice how the forests come down to meet the shores of deep inlets stretching inland. This rugged coastline is known as the Bay of Sixty-six Inlets. In the afternoon cruise to the secluded English Harbor, which abounds with thick green foliage. The cove takes its name from the English torpedo boats that hid here in World War II.

Set sail for the Longuz Bay, where the forest touches the water's edge and offers some lovely hiking opportunities. In the early evening drop anchor in Tuzla for overnight, after a few stops for swimming in Ballisu. Ballisu (meaning honeyed water;) is another site of incredible natural beauty that will take your breath away.

Cruise to the picturesque fishing hamlet of Cokertme, which is nestled in the foothills of Kiran Mountains. Here you can hike through the village's winding pathways, some of them not much more than a goat path and explore. (Optional): A short southerly sail brings you to the intriguing village of Oren. If the sea is calm, you can drop anchor at the sea wall and either walk about a mile or take a minibus up to the old village. Here you will find villagers living amongst the ruins of ancient Keramos. If you explore the various footpaths, you will eventually come across an ornately carved temple doorway (now part of a barn wall), the remains of a Byzantine church at the bottom of a garden complete with a clearly visible fresco, and the remains of a Roman bath complex.

This morning cruise to the pine-clad Bay of Kisebuku. Take advantage of the calm morning hours sailing smoothly along the Gokova shores. Opt for a stop at Orak Island. Late afternoon, come into Bodrum harbor, or continue to the lovely bay of Ada Bogazi for the night. Year round balmy temperatures, international marinas, elegant boutiques, chic cafés and nightclubs and a variety of delightful dining experiences attract many to the lively Bodrum town and harbor. The 15th century Crusader castle, the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, and the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, add an historical dimension to this resort. (Optional): Karaada Island is well-known for its thermal features, caves and mud baths. Take a hike around the island and swim in the thermal sulphur baths, where the water is comfortably warm. (Optional): This afternoon, visit the 15th-century Crusader castle, which houses the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology. Museum exhibits include ancient shipwrecks raised off the coast of Turkey and the intact remains of a Carian princess; tomb dating back to the time of Alexander the Great.

Disembark after breakfast.

Just a quick email to say a very big thank you from Bruce & myself for the wonderful week we had on board MS Nikola. I knew it would be special, but had no idea just how special! The gulet is superb, the crew were out of this world, the weather was perfect, & the company just brilliant… there is no way we could have improved on any aspect of our trip whatsoever. I didn’t know that Bruce had mentioned it was our honeymoon; the crew went above & beyond in terms of making it memorable for us, as did the other 3 couples on the gulet! Although the week at sea fell into the middle of our honeymoon (as we were in Kos & Bodrum either side of the cruise, & both of those were special too), it was by far the highlight of it… neither of us wanted our time on board to end. Having read some of the comments in the gulet’s guest book, we could see just how special it is; and the current crew (capt Ramazan, chef Tekin & 1st mate Hassan) are deservedly well-loved by all.

I’d also like to say a really big thank you too to Small Cruise Ships for letting us join the Nikola, because of course we shouldn’t have been on it at all, having booked to join the Myra. She was alongside us in port so we had chance to see her also; another beautiful gulet indeed. But we both quickly realised that we’d been incredibly lucky to be swapped onto the Nikola… it’s a truly fantastic itinerary & there really wasn’t a minute we didn’t enjoy. (…possibly with the exception of me dropping my mobile phone – or rather the special photos on it – onto the Eastern Aegean seabed! Ramazan was amazing, and gave us some lovely photos of us he’d taken, which of course more than made up for the loss )

I also hope this is useful from a feedback point of view; do let me know if you’d like me to write something more articulately! We decided there & then in Bodrum we’d start saving on our return, because without any doubt whatsoever we wish to sail with the Nikola & crew again next year, wherever she’s going…

Greek Island Small Ship Cruises

Island hopping in the beautiful greek islands.

Overview | Cruises

Greek Island Hopping Holidays

If you're looking for an unforgettable holiday, consider a Greek island cruise. These island hopping cruises take you to some of the most beautiful and historic islands in the Mediterranean, and they're perfect for tourists and travellers of all ages.  Our Greek Island Hopping Holidays take in famous archaeological sites, enjoy delicious Mediterranean food, take in wonderful scenery, soak up the sun as well as plenty of time for relaxation on beautiful beaches. The great thing about our island hopping cruises is the fact you get to see several beautiful greek islands during your holiday. The Greek Islands, steeped in myth, with their rich history and breath-taking scenery, call to mind the romanticism of Homer and the bravery of the ancient heroes. The only quest which you will be undertaking is the search for absolute relaxation, whether that is reading a book on deck, soaking up the sun, or exploring ancient history on shore.

Our Greek Islands small ship cruises set sail from Athens and include stops on the most famous of the Greek islands including Santorini and Mykonos as well as lesser known small, picturesque islands such as Naxos and Paros. We have an extensive selection of luxury Greek Island Cruises such as Antiquity to Byzantium small ship Cruise, Athens & Greek Islands cruise holidays, Greece & Adriatic small ship cruise, Greek Islands cruise & stay holidays, Luxury Greek Island cruises, variety cruises and much more. On board you will enjoy a high standard of personal service combined with excellent cuisine. A typical small ship cruise in the Greek Islands has around 25 cabins and employs 16 - 20 crew including a professional ship manager, tour guides and service managers. Your itinerary will be planned by your expert tour guide, who will let you know every evening what the programme is for the following day and give you an insight into the culture and history of the places you will be exploring.  Greek Island hopping cruises are brilliant for seeing more of the beautiful islands and packing more into your holiday.

Why Should I Choose A Small Ship Cruise

Small ship cruises in Greece offer a more intimate and personalised travel experience compared to large cruise ships. Some of the benefits of small ship cruises include:

1.      Flexibility: Small ship cruises can access ports and locations that larger ships cannot, giving passengers the opportunity to visit unique and remote destinations not possible on larger vessels.

2.      Personalised experience: With fewer passengers, small ship cruises offer a more personalised experience. The crew can provide individual attention to each guest, and the itinerary can be customised to suit the group's preferences.

3.      Privacy: Small ship cruises allow for a more private and intimate experience. Passengers can enjoy the ship's amenities without the crowds and queues that are common on larger ships.

4.      Cultural immersion: Small ship cruises often offer opportunities to learn about the local culture and traditions of the destinations visited. This can include onboard lectures, local guides, and authentic cultural experiences.

5.      Eco-friendly: Small ships have a smaller environmental footprint than larger cruise ships. They consume less fuel and produce fewer emissions, making them a more sustainable choice for travellers who are concerned about their impact on the environment.

Our small ship cruises provide a unique and immersive island hopping experience that is well-suited for travellers who value intimacy, flexibility, and cultural immersion. Diamond Star Experience have a fabulous collection of Greek Island cruises with luxury small ship and Gulet cruises ideal for greek island hopping holidays.

The Best New Small-Ship Cruises to Book in 2024

A uthentic. It was Merriam Webster's top searched word for 2023 and one that has dominated the travel vernacular in recent years. And while many would not necessarily associate the word with ocean cruising , the growth in popularity of small-ship cruises-particularly sailings with 500 guests or fewer-indicates that in the cruising world, passengers are seeking a more intimate, less crowded, and yes, arguably more authentic sailing experience.

Take expedition cruising , for example. As the number of adventure-focused ships and yachts has exploded in recent years, these cruises are no longer just about extreme voyages in polar regions. They are also about offering a deeper look into the culture, food, history, and environmental fragility of remote wonders of the world.

Although there isn't a huge number of new small ships being introduced, there are a few notable vessels that have either recently launched or are launching this year with a focus on the idea that smaller is not just better, but more sustainable, too. These new small-ship cruises bring with them some exciting and more immersive new itineraries to destinations both warm and wintry that have us ready to pack our bags and sail away.

Sea Cloud Cruises' "Sea Cloud Spirit"

  • Suggested itinerary: Reset your mind and body on an eight-night sailing through Spain's Canary Islands and on to Morocco on a special cruise featuring experts in restorative health. Pricing starts at $4,895 per person.

What's more authentic-and sustainable-than setting sail on a tall ship where the sails are hoisted up each day by hand? Although not technically new (it was launched in 2021), the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit and its two sister ships, Sea Cloud and Sea Cloud II , are upping their game in a push to introduce Sea Cloud Cruises' unique product to North American travelers. The German company has traditionally catered to German and British passengers. As part of its effort to expand its reach and appeal, Sea Cloud is adding wellness programs with daily onboard yoga and guest fitness gurus, in addition to special food- and wine-focused sailings with well-known chefs making appearances. Sea Cloud Spirit , the largest of the three-ship fleet with 69 cabins, was meticulously designed to pay homage to the original Sea Cloud , which was the world's largest private sailing yacht when Wall Street broker Edward Francis Hutton had it built in 1931 for his wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post.

The Sea Cloud Spirit combines the experience of decades of traditional seamanship with the modern-day luxuries of a private yacht. Cabins range from 172-square-foot single cabins to 300-square-foot balcony suites with soaking tubs. There's a large fitness center and spa, which has a steam room, sauna, and thermal area for two; indoor and outdoor lounges; and a main dining area, plus a more casual bistro. The action, however, is out on deck, where passengers can stargaze at night or simply gaze in awe at the impressive sails blowing in the wind.

Atlas Ocean Voyages' "World Navigator"

  • Suggested itinerary: Go searching for Arctic wildlife on a 12-night cruise from Reykjavík, which sails along the eastern coast of Greenland and to Longyearbyen in the Svalbard archipelago, one of the world's northernmost inhabited areas and home to polar bears, reindeer, arctic foxes, and other Nordic wildlife. Pricing starts at $6,499 per person.

World Navigator , which sailed its maiden voyage in Antarctica this past November, is the third vessel to join the fleet of one of the newest players in small-ship expedition cruising, Atlas Ocean Voyages. The company's 100-cabin expedition yachts are almost identical and provide a hybrid of sorts between traditional expedition and luxury cruising. Cabins are spacious, almost all with balconies, desks, and seating areas. The bathrooms have glass-mosaic tiled showers with rain showerheads, wall jets, and even benches.

Everything on the ship-including the sauna with floor-to-ceiling windows-is designed to provide maximum views. The ships also have spacious pool decks with two hot tubs, a fitness center overlooking the sea, a spa, and water toys like kayaks and paddleboards. There's even extreme camping gear for those willing to brave an overnight under the stars in Antarctica. During North American winters, all three of Atlas's expedition yachts sail in Antarctica. With the addition of World Navigator , the company is launching more Arctic Circle cruises during the North American summers while also adding a host of new epicurean and cultural expeditions in South America, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and northern Europe this year.

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's "Ilma"

  • Suggested itinerary: Spend a little extra time in port on a 10-day sailing from Barcelona to Lisbon, which has three overnight stays, in Palma de Mallorca and Malaga in Spain, and in Lisbon, Portugal, one of Europe's oldest cities. Pricing starts at $10,600 per person.

Another newcomer to luxury small-ship cruising is the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, which debuts its second ship, the Ilma , this year. With 224 suites, the ship is larger than the original Ritz-Carlton yacht, the 149-suite Evrima , which launched in October 2022. On the Ilma , all the suites will have private terraces, including a two-story suite with soaking tub; the coveted, 1,000-square-foot owner's suite has a private outdoor whirlpool. Even the smallest suites are not all that small, at 300 square feet, and come with a personal concierge and 24-hour room service. The yacht boasts what Ritz-Carlton says is the highest ratio of space per guest at sea.

And you can expect to find the same meticulous service standards that you would find at Ritz-Carlton resorts throughout the world as the line aims to impress hotel guests seeking a luxury hotel experience at sea. Onboard are five dining venues, including S.E.A., a European tasting experience designed by chef Sven Elverfeld of Aqua, the three Michelin-starred restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton in Wolfsburg, Germany; Talaat Nam, featuring Southeast Asian cuisine and a sushi bar; and Mistral, a casual come-as-you-are alfresco grill with a Mediterranean-inspired menu. Light bites are served at the marina at the aft of the ship, where you can also hop on a borrowed paddleboard. Oh, and did we mention there are two outdoor pools, too?

Book a terrace suite on the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's newest vessel, Ilma , launching in 2024.

Greek Islands

The Greek Islands offer history, culture, sun and sea. Enjoy the many pleasures an island-hopping gulet cruise has to offer. Go back through time on the ancient island of Rhodes; see the charming lanes of Symi; swim the azure waters of Kos; see the world-famous sunset in Santoríni; or enjoy the sparkling nightlife of Mýkonos. Greek gulet cruise holidays take place in the Dodecanese (Rhodes, Symi, Kos, etc), the Cyclades (Santorini, Mykonos, etc) and the Ionian islands (Corfu, Paxos, etc).

Due to the proximity of many islands to the Turkish mainland, Greek island hopping holidays can depart from either the Greek Islands or Turkish harbours and usually take place on Turkish gulets.
