Famous British Boat Builder Sunseeker Sold to US and Italian Private Equity Companies
- Top stories
Sunseeker International has announced that it has been sold in a joint Italian and American purchase. MBY's editor, Hugo Andreae reports on the sale
British boat builder Sunseeker International has been bought by two different private equity companies – Lionheart Capital and Orienta Capital Partners. The two new shareholders have acquired the famous British brand for an undisclosed sum from former Chinese owners the Dalian Wanda Group.
Although Lionheart Capital is based in the US and Orienta Capital Partners is based in Italy, the new partnership has vowed to maintain Sunseeker as a British brand and boatbuilding powerhouse. Production will remain at the yard’s facilities in Poole, Dorset.
Current CEO, Andrea Fabretti, and Sunseeker’s board of directors will stay on for the time being under the auspices of new Sunseeker Chairman Giancarlo Galeone, one of Orienta Capital’s senior partners.
Galeone has extensive experience of the boat building industry having served as CEO of the Ferretti Group for two stints from 1995-2006 and again from 2011-2012. He was also appointed CEO of Italian performance boat builder Anvera Yacht in 2014, a role he still holds today.

“We are thrilled to start this new journey alongside Sunseeker. Our strong expertise in the yachting industry combined with our long-lasting relationship with its CEO will allow us to further enhance the British identity and craftsmanship, driving the brand towards ambitious goals,” said Galeone.
“We can expect a substantial investment into the development of new core and niche models, supporting the worldwide presence of the brand.”
Lionheart Capital is a Miami-based firm, whose main investments to date have focussed on the property sector. However, its founder and CEO Ophir Sternberg is a self-confessed boat enthusiast with a fondness for the maritime industry. Lionheart bought a share of American performance boat builder Cigarette Racing in 2021.
“We are excited to welcome Sunseeker Yachts into the Lionheart Capital family,” Sternberg commented. “This acquisition represents a strategic investment in a brand with a storied history, including as James Bond’s yacht maker, and a bright future.
“Lionheart understands the unique dynamics of the luxury yacht industry, and I am confident in Sunseeker’s potential for growth and innovation.”
Sunseeker CEO Andrea Fabrettio and sales director Sean Robertson welcomed the deal assuring Sunseeker’s 2,250 employees that it would help secure the future of the company and continue its ambitious programme of new product development. Foremost among these will be a new Manhattan 68 and 94 Yacht.

Sunseeker International and Rolls-Royce to present first production yacht with MTU hybrid power in 2020
Sean Robertson, Sales Director at Sunseeker International commented: “Sunseeker has always led the industry by innovating and being first to market so it is entirely appropriate that we are the first luxury performance yacht manufacturer to partner with MTU Hybrid Power which will revolutionise how all customers power their boats over the coming years. The way owners are using their boats continues to evolve with efficiency and noise reduction now as important as features and volume which all contribute to their ultimate purchase decision. This latest hybrid technology will feature in a brand new model launching in 2020 and will allow owners a choice of multiple operating modes from all-electric with zero emissions through to use of the twin 12-cylinder diesel engines delivering efficient classleading performance. We will always be led by our customers who are seeking the highest levels of innovation to match their extended cruising aspirations.”
Knut Müller, Head of Marine and Government Business at MTU, said: “The combination of diesel engines and electric motors, in addition to batteries and their variable areas of application, offer yacht owners significant benefits. Silent cruising, combined with low vibration and emission levels, offer tremendous gains in terms of on-board comfort. High performance levels, efficiency, environmental compatibility and the flexibility of the propulsion system are great interest today when operating a yacht. We believe that the focus in the future yacht industry will be more and more on smart and innovative system solutions rather than just focussing on the power output level.”
Completely integrated hybrid propulsion system fitted with MTU Series 2000 engines
The new Sunseeker yacht will have an integrated MTU hybrid propulsion system. It will consist of two 12-cylinder MTU Series 2000 diesel engines (each delivering around 1,432 kW/ 1,947 hp), on-board generators, electric propulsion modules, transmission system, batteries, control and monitoring systems and can be expanded on a modular basis.
The yacht will be provided with six different operating modes that are easy to operate, including the automated “smart hybrid” and “charge hybrid” modes, which enable all power sources to be used as required. In an “electric mode” the yacht propulsion and on-board power can be supplied continuously by the generators, providing optimisation of fuel consumption and comfort on-board for long and overnight passages. In “silent mode”, which uses power solely from the batteries, up to 40 minutes of propulsion and 120 minutes of onboard power are available with each pair of MTU batteries installed, with no emissions produced whatsoever.
Successful collaboration going back more than 18 years
Sunseeker and MTU UK have had a successful working relationship for more than 18 years, with over 1.8 million hp of MTU power installed in yachts with lengths of between 20 and 47 metres. As early as 2010, the two companies laid the basis for the hybrid propulsion system in tests that were carried out on a prototype yacht.

- Electric Hydrofoil
Navier delivers N30 electric hydrofoiling boat with ‘world’s longest range’ to first customer
Maritime electrification startup Navier has hit a significant milestone today by reaching commercial production of its flagship electric hydrofoiling boat and delivering the first model to a customer. Better still, the young company has done so in an impressively short time.
Navier is a Bay Area startup founded by two MIT alumni focused on building a new type of watercraft that cuts running costs by 90%. That approach combines hydrofoils, electrification, advanced composites, and an intelligent software system into one sustainable and cost-effective watercraft that can hydrofoil above the water, reducing drag and maximizing range.
The startup caught our attention in February 2022 after unveiling its flagship electric hydrofoil, the Navier 27 (N27), followed by a successful seed funding round totaling $7.2 million to get those initial vessels into production.
The N27 would evolve into the Navier N30 electric hydrofoiling boat, which was seen being tested in late December 2022 and touted by its makers to become the “longest-range electric boat” on the market and “the first commercially available electric hydrofoiling boat in the US.”
We’d argue that plenty of other electric hydrofoiling boats are on the market or arriving soon, including Candela, Vessev , and even a single-passenger design coming from Foil. One .
Regardless, Navier has made good on its promise to bring its first electric hydrofoiling boat to production and has just delivered its first N30 to a customer, a mere 2.5 years after unveiling the initial prototype design.
Navier N30 boats hit the market, with more builds to follow
Navier recently delivered a special edition of its first electric hydrofoiling boat, called the N30 Pioneer Edition, to a customer in California, marking the milestone with a celebration at the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco. During the event, Navier founder and CEO Sampriti Bhattacharyya spoke:
This is an extraordinary milestone, not only for Navier, but for the American maritime industry and for the electric vehicle market as a whole. We started Navier to build the next generation of clean, highly efficient marine vessels that combine engineering excellence with world class craftsmanship, and the N30 Pioneer Edition is a major step toward realizing that vision. By delivering the most high-tech electric boat available today in just two and a half years, we’re putting ‘America’ back in ‘maritime.’ The N30 is not only the first all-electric hydrofoiling boat in the US market, it’s also the longest range electric boat in the world, with the open variant getting almost 100 miles at cruising speed on a single charge. The N30 is like a high-tech luxury F22 Raptor on the water, with a flight control system used by US Department of Defense vessels that enables highly precise maneuverability at speed while also ensuring stability and reliability. We are proud to be building the next generation of maritime transportation right here in the Bay Area.
As its nomenclature alludes to, the N30 is thirty feet long and propelled by twin 90 kW propulsion systems and aerospace-grade redundancies to deliver maximum safety. When it reaches the plane, the Navier boat glides above waves up to four feet high, offering a smoother and quieter ride than traditional vessels.
In its standard configuration, the N30 boat can travel over 75 nautical miles at a speed of 20 knots (23 mph) and is equipped with Navier’s proprietary maritime tech stack, which includes a high-performance flight control system, navigation platform, sensors, and actuator systems.
With the first customer delivery now complete, Navier said it will continue its lean, agile approach with “unwavering determination.” The startup allotted ten builds of the N30 Pioneer Edition in 2024, all of which have already been pre-sold.
Navier says the additional N30 boats are scheduled for delivery to buyers in the luxury hospitality space for use as guest amenities and to other individual buyers.
