Vallarta YC is always a special place and a must stop for us when we're in Mexico. I encourage every sailor to visit if you are in town. Friendly service, good food and great prices.

I just went to eat here! Worst customer service ever!! I have been there many time before and have brought my own drinks in as far as electrolytes never had an issue I even know one of the bartenders. Who wasn't there today. No alcohol! I've always been welcome!! Today different story they asked me to leave because I brought in my own drink and I wanted to use my own hand sanitizers. I will never go back and to be honest the food isn't that great !!!! I would suggest going to the mall over them anytime!!! Worst restaurant in the harbor. I will never go back and you should go there either!! Let's shut this place down ASAP and get something good in there.

Wonderful place to eat and the servers are absolutely entertaining. The burgers are the best I have had in years. Great prices and beautiful ambiance. Will go there as often as we can. We heard it will soon be closed to the public. That is sad news.

Best Thanksgiving dinner in Nuevo Vallarta. Live music. Fantastic waitstaff. Members or reciprocal privileges from other yacht clubs available. 3rd year here and gets better every time!

Riviera Nayarit, Mexico – Vallarta Yacht Club has officially taken over their new premises in the bar/restaurant area of a commercial building situated among the hospital and immigration offices. “The ink is drying, we have a new home! We have reached an agreement with our longtime partners, the Paradise Village Group, to secure a new facility. Our rent will not change substantially and we anticipate having the new location for at least the next three to five years,” the press release said.

They also have a “verbal commitment” for use of the old lot for regattas like WesMex, access to the pool and shower areas for the Junior Sailing Program, and permission to continue using the space on the side of the ramp to store some of the club’s boats. “We may even have a couple of FIBBA staff children as new students in our program.”

After 21 years in their former premises, the facility was taken over by the State of Nayarit in September, leaving the members to ponder the group’s future. Now, along with the good news of a new home, the club has announced a schedule of events that’s sure to keep sailors busy well into 2024. Leading off on the calendar are five events to see out the year.

First up was the 2023–2024 Opening Day, at the club’s new home on Saturday, November 4. Then the festive-season month kicks off with The Great Chili Cook-off and Taste of Nuevo. This fun event will require chili cooks, and tasters. Know anyone who can help?

Also on the calendar is the annual Lighted Boat Parade and Junior Sailing Fundraiser, a Panama Posse Presentation, and on Christmas Day, the annual Navidad en la Playa — this is where everyone gathers to share good times on the beach and send “On the beach in Mexico” photos to family and friends farther north.

Once the festivities are over, January dawns with a range of on-the-water events including the Vallarta Cup 2024, J/70 Monthly Regatta, and Cruise-Out to Barra de Navidad. And of course there are several ongoing races and get-togethers, such as the fortnightly beer can races, drop-in dinners, happy hours, game days and more.

Despite the good news and the great calendar, the club is facing budgeting issues due to “some un-budgeted purchases,” and changes in the USD-peso exchange rate. They have therefore started a fundraising campaign, “New Beginnings,” with a goal to raise $45,000 USD to complete the move and fit-out of their new premises, along with replacing some out-of-date equipment. Another great way to support the club is to get involved. Sign up for the races, join the cruise-out, meet other members at the happy hours and dinner. Of course, you need to be in Mexico to do that, but why not?

“We are working on our budget for next year. Our plan will include adding new members, added income from the other tenants of the building, a review of menu and drink pricing, as well as our annual revision of our dues and fee structure. We foresee a bright future and opportunities in this location that are not available in our old clubhouse,” Commodore Randy Hough wrote. “I think it is going to be fun, challenging at times perhaps, but VYC will be better and stronger by this time next year!”

Facilities: Bar open Wed. thru Sun 1000 to 2400. Dining room open Wed.- Sun for lunch and dinner (breakfast on Sat. & brunch on Sun.) Snack bar open every day from Memorial Day to Labor Day 1000 to 1630. Heated Pool and Paddle Tennis Courts available to members and their guests. 320 member slips (25’ to 120’), 100+ dry storage slips (up to 25’), two 2-ton hoists and launch ramp. Guest docks are first come, first served, but call for reservations. First night free for reciprocal club members. CYC monitors channel 68.

Junior program: Year round. Junior Sailing and Rowing Program. Open to all youths in the community (ages 8-18). Full time Junior staff.

CYC offers a variety of summer programs for junior age (13 – 18) boys and girls. CYC membership is not required to enroll. We have programs suited for all juniors with an interest in rowing from those wishing to try the sport for the first time to those training for national competitions.

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.

The 18th WesMex International Small Boat Regatta Sails to Success

This year's regatta, held from February 21 – 25, witnessed 126 competitors and coaches, with skilled sailors showcasing their prowess in Optimists, ILCAs, and C420s. WesMex is part of the Mexican Sailing Circuit and therefore a sequence of qualifying events for the Optimist North American Championship and Optimist World Championship. It was also a qualifier for the ILCA 6 Youth Championships. The regatta offered a diverse range of competitions, creating an electric atmosphere as sailors navigated the challenging courses with finesse and determination.

The success of the event would not have been possible without the invaluable support of our sponsors. Their unwavering commitment to the sport and the regatta allowed for the seamless execution of this world-class event. Their contributions, both financial and logistical, ensured that the WesMex International Small Boat Regatta continued to thrive, providing a platform for sailors to compete at the highest level.

Why Be a Member of VYC?

So much has changed at VYC in the the past year: our eviction from our home of 22 years, movement to a new, much larger space, a change in policy that allowed non-members to use the club's bar and restaurant, and the requirement to build out a space much bigger and more flexible than our previous clubhouse. Through all that, our members have done what they always do - stepped up to make our new space a home for our VYC family.

We are reminded of the note penned by past board member Bill Noonan a decade ago, about why he loves being a member of VYC. We think it is as true now as it was then.

You know, I’ve been thinking. About Vallarta Yacht Club, to be exact. Cynthia and I have been members since we first arrived on our boat, Crème Brûlée, in 2004. At that time we were happy to find a comfortable, cool place to come, meet new people, relax with a cold beer, and just hang out. And we were really ready to have a place where we felt like we belonged, far away from our home in the Pacific Northwest.

Over that time, the Club has changed, and so have we. The patio tripled in size to become one of the most desirable and pleasant places we know of to spend time, the restaurant fare has improved dramatically, the furniture and décor has been continually upgraded, and the Club has developed an international reputation for being a World Class yacht racing venue. This Club just keeps getting better. And us? We’re 13 years older, we sold the boat, and we’re staying in a condo. What has not changed is how perfect the Club has always been for us.

It’s funny how you can go through life not paying much attention to your many blessings. In this, our thirteenth season in Paradise, we suddenly realized how special Vallarta Yacht Club has been in our lives. The Banderas Bay area has lots to offer in the way of interesting and fun things to do, great restaurants and bars, great shops and markets, endless choices for entertainment, and of course the incomparable Mexican culture. All that in a ridiculously pleasant climate on a beautiful bay surrounded by incredible beaches, with some of most amazing sunsets imaginable. That’s what brought us here in the first place, and what makes us stay around.
