6 of the best yacht design courses to kick-start your career

Yacht design and production beng.

Although many of the world’s top superyacht designers had no formal training, taking a yacht design course can be a great way to kick-start your career and make vital industry connections. We round up five of the best.

Southampton Solent University’s Yacht Design and Production Course has an international reputation and for good reason, as it features guest lectures from BMT Nigel Gee and work experience placements at Sunseeker International . Students on this three-year course study the engineering science behind great yacht design as well as the fundamental principles of naval architecture. A foundation year is available, as well as opportunities to study abroad. Notable successes include the class of 2014, who built the foiling catamaran Solent Whisper (pictured above).

Yacht Design Diploma

Based in the American town of Arundel, Maine, the Landing School offers a wide range of courses in marine technology. Its Yacht Design Diploma boasts a 100% employment rate for former students and bursaries are available via the Women in the Marine Industry scholarship. Alumni have gone on to work for the America’s Cup team Artemis Racing (pictured above).

Yacht Design 1st Level Masters

Offered as a postgraduate course, the Yacht Design 1st Level Masters at Milan’s ISAD design school is intended for students who have a degree in architecture, engineering or design. Taught in both English and Italian, this one-year course culminates in an industry placement, and guest speakers include  Mario Pedol  (who designed the 180 metre  Azzam  — pictured), and  Andrea Vallicelli .

Yacht and Boat Design Diploma

The Westlawn Institute has been teaching yacht design for more than 80 years, and currently offers an online distance-learning programme. The Yacht and Boat Design course is taught by tutors based in the USA and Australia, and is accredited by the Royal Institute of Naval Architects in London. This one-year diploma features modules on construction, engineering and CAD. Famous alumni include Douglas Zurn , Tom Fexas and Geoffrey Van Aller , who is responsible for the design of many of the top 50 largest US-built yachts , such as the 73 metre Cocoa Bean (pictured above).

Automotive and Transport Design MDes/BA

A slightly left field option perhaps, but automotive design is one of the key fields that influences yacht design . This three to four-year undergraduate course at Coventry University is held in particularly high regard for its strong industry connections. Former students who have gone on to make a name for themselves in the superyacht world include Jonny Horsfield (whose H2 Yacht Design studio created the exteriors for the 123 metre Project Jupiter  — pictured above), and Steve Gresham.

Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering MEng

In recent years, there has been a trend towards students using naval architecture courses as a route into yacht design, as James Roy from BMT Nigel Gee explains: "It used to be that if you attended a traditional naval architecture degree then you would spend most of your time learning things about big merchant ships, but that is not the case anymore.

"Most university degrees are now geared to provide modular approaches, and the naval architecture and engineering of smaller and specialist vessels, such as yachts, are included."

This four-year course at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow is a case in point — providing a broad basis for understanding how a wide variety of vessels work, from luxury yachts to commercial ships. The faculty also owns a 10 metre sailing yacht called Catalina (pictured above), which students can hire for as little as £30 per day.

The Master in Yacht Design offers the ideal educational path to become a Yacht Designer

The Master in Yacht Design offers the ideal educational path to become a Yacht Designer, by giving the necessary skills to deal with every stage of the design process – from the initial research and development of the concept to the actual construction of the interiors and exteriors and the validation of production processes in the boatyard.

In recent years, the nautical sector has expanded constantly, confirming its role as one of the drivers of Made in Italy design. Furthermore, and the new classic approach, based on naval architecture, is taking on an automotive oriented edge, which introduces new working standards and technical and style solutions borrowed from car design.

The vocation of the Piemonte area, which boasts a number of style centres and renowned companies in the land and sea transport sectors, as well as one of the world’s largest shipyards, combined with the short distance from the coast of Liguria, makes Turin the natural setting for a training course founded on the growing process of osmosis that links the yacht world and the automotive industry.

Information to decide

Methodology and structure.

The course is planned in levels, which begin with providing students with essential knowledge of the nautical sector, in terms of both cultural aspects and basic techniques. From there, students gradually acquire the skills connected with yacht design.

Starting from a study of the history and current scenarios of the nautical sector, students will go on to study the market and obtain more detail knowledge of the different types of boats. They acquire significant knowledge of materials, technologies and production methods, including through hands-on experience in a shipyard. They are provided with technical drawing and design tools, as well.

A further strength of this Master course is the fact that is delivered on two campuses, Turin and Venice. This offers participants a dual scenario, in which both cities represent an important aspect of the themes the course is focused on: the tradition of the automotive industry on the one hand, and the maritime vocation on the other.

The training course ends with a Thesis Project, developed on a brief given by a boatyard or a design studio.

Who is it for?

The admission of the Master is open to graduates in Architecture, Engineering and in the field of Design (Transportation, Interior, Product), as well as professionals in the sector seeking to apply their skills in this specific area.

Master's degree.

3 days/week 4 hours/day

IN-PERSON COURSE

The Academic Master deals with the design of boats at 360°: from the water lines to the interior furnishings, from the details to all the components necessary for the realization of the project, without neglecting the specific regulations and the analysis of the product.

The Master is sponsored by the National Council of Architects, Planners, Landscape Architects and Conservators.

Academic goals

The aim of the Yacht Design Master’s Degree is to start the students to operate successfully both in the design of new models and in refitting, as freelance professionals or within studios and production facilities. For this purpose, you will deal with topics which, proceeding by successive degrees towards the specialization, frame the complexity of the theme within clear reference systems to ease the rapid acquisition of familiarity with direct step-by-step applications.

Trainees become familiar with the various types of boats, know the recent evolution of pleasure boating: classifications, nomenclatures and standards; the characteristics of the boating market, the main production structures, the materials and construction techniques in use.

Approaching the project, you’ll be able to prepare the correct distribution of loads and the internal functional partition of the boat; know how to use the dedicated CAD tools effectively in the project; you’ll be able to make the choice of the most suitable method to construct the surfaces suitable for CAM transfer for the milling of the pieces; able to define the hydrostatic and hydrodynamic characteristics of the project and choose the most appropriate water lines; you can take care of the interior design, passing through the calculation of the boat’s trim, the applicable powers and the study of the most efficient rig (in the case of sailing boats); Project management principles and experiences, study of techniques and standards for industrial reproducibility, as well as rules and ways of protecting the project idea, as well as environmental and marine heritage complete the training.

Blog Master the Art of Yacht Interior Design: The Ultimate Guide for Yacht Owners

Aria Johansson

The Aesthetic Side of the High Seas

When most people think about Yachts, the first image that comes to mind is probably of a shining, sleek exterior slicing through the crystal-clear waters. But for the captains of these crafts, the interior is just as important. Both functional and fashionable, the interior design of your Yacht speaks volumes not just about your personality, but also about your approach to the high-octane boating life. Hence, we’re embarking on a round-the-world tour of Yacht interior design, aiming to inspire and guide Yacht owners to create a truly stunning inner sanctum.

Identifying Your Personal Style

Think dark, exquisite woods, plush upholstered furniture, and refined traditional elements. This style exudes sophistication, elegance, and a sense of timelessness. It often features polished bronze or brass fixtures, intricate detailing, and a muted color palette.

Contemporary

This design style often features clean, smooth lines, a minimalistic approach, and a palette of neutral colors. Lightweight, often recycled materials are commonly used, offering an echo of the sea's constant ebb and flow.

Be Mindful of Materials

With Yachts being exposed to harsh marine conditions, it's crucial to choose materials that can withstand the sea's wrath. Consider marine-grade steel, premium yacht-friendly woods like teak or iroko, and resistant textiles for your upholstery.

Incorporate Functional Design

Remember, a Yacht isn't just a floating showcase. Prioritize practicality and functionality. Incorporate in-built storage solutions and modish-yet-minimalist furniture that doesn’t constrict onboard movement. Remember, it's all about balancing comfort, utility, and luxury.

Consider the Extra Amenities

Designing your Yacht interior is also about planning for luxury amenities. From a full-service bar to a spa-quality bath, the amenities you choose, yet again, echo your personality while elevating the Yacht experience for you and your guests.

Remember: interior design isn't about following trends. It's about creating your own personal sanctuary at sea. ' The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.' said Marcel Proust. So let's open our eyes to new Yacht interiors!

Yacht Interior Design

When does a sea vessel cross the line from being just an ordinary boat to an extravagant yacht?

While both give us the unique experience of enjoying life on the high seas , yachts, known to be the epitome of excess and luxury, allow affluent people to marry their love for the sea with their penchant for lavish living. With the most costly yachts in the world surpassing the $300 million mark in building costs, these vessels may be the most expensive option in both luxury goods and vacation retreats. When budget isn’t an issue, yacht interior designers, builders and owners pull out all the stops to create over-the-top sea dwellings.

Even when cost is not the most significant factor in yacht design, it remains a major one due to the extra challenges that surface when adapting current design trends from the mainland to the special conditions of being out at sea. Being mindful of the unique surroundings allow yacht designers to create innovative design solutions without sacrificing personal design aesthetics. The Design Institute of San Diego explores some of these most outrageous yachts, and “superyachts,” sailing through the ocean blue at the moment.   Allow this post to pull you inside the realm of yacht interior design and leave you sailing into the horizon.

A yacht design project is a unique undertaking because of the variety of special circumstances that surround it.

Like any home, a yacht’s design should be a reflection of the owner’s taste, with an interior designer at the helm to find that perfect balance of grandiose style and effective functionality. For those fortunate enough to own one, there is a common desire towards making it bigger and better than the rest. With many existing yachts boasting amenities that include saunas, gyms, theaters, recording studios, swimming pools and even helipads, there’s no denying that there is no such thing as excess in this unique facet of the yacht interior design industry.

The design of a boat, whatever its size, involves diverse and multifaceted knowledge. A boat is simultaneously a means of transportation and a living environment; it lives on the water and yet relates to the coasts. The range of objects of study and design presents a great variety: from the luxury yacht to the interiors of ships intended to accommodate tourism, but also schools or hospitals; from the performance boat to the design of the accessory, component or new mode of transport on water.

The study of context, scenario building, and the ability to represent and communicate are part of the graduate's preparation, without forgetting the cultural roots and historical knowledge that characterize the field.  The student learns to understand contexts of use, outline trend lines, imagine modes of use, and create new services and products.

The graduate acquires the skills necessary to conceive, design and implement interior and exterior design of boats and recreational vessels, manage the evolution of the project considering the production processes and the many dynamics involved in its realization, develop an ability to effectively communicate project and product content.
