below deck sailing yacht season 1 when was it filmed

Below Deck: Behind the scenes of filming the hit superyacht reality show

When it first aired in 2013, Below Deck quickly garnered the attention of a loyal band of die-hard fans. Three years later, the spin-off Below Deck: Mediterranean followed. Amid the chaos of crew love triangles and outrageous guest requests, returning captains Lee Rosbach and Sandy Yawn emerged as respected industry professionals and brand ambassadors for the show.

  • Below Deck secrets: What the hit TV series didn't tell you

In 2020, the brand’s second spin-off, Below Deck: Sailing Yacht , launched, shining a new light on the crews and challenges of sailing yacht charters. Together, the reality show triumvirate propelled Below Deck and the superyacht industry to global audiences, earning the show its own unique place in the hall of reality television fame. But Below Deck’s producers aren’t done yet. Earlier this year, US network Bravo announced the Below Deck empire was set to grow further with two new spin-off seasons, Below Deck Adventure and Below Deck Down Under . As the sixth season of Below Deck: Mediterranean gets underway on June 28, BOAT talks to executive producer Tania Hamidi about Below Deck’s stratospheric rise and the behind-the-scenes reality of filming the show.

  • How Captain Lee became TV’s favourite yacht captain

Hamidi is a seasoned television producer and one of Below Deck’s longest-serving team members. She has been a staple of the Below Deck production team for seven years, joining as the second season of Below Deck got underway. Soon after, she was involved in the launch of Below Deck: Mediterranean fronted by captain Mark Howard, who was promptly replaced by captain Sandy Yawn in the second season. This was a key casting decision, Hamidi says. “We loved Mark, but it was really exciting to have a woman in the wheelhouse. When that opportunity presented itself, it just took over,” she says, adding that Sandy “got herself on that boat”.

  • Captain Sandy Yawn on the reality of filming Below Deck Mediterranean

While captains Lee Rosbach, Sandy Yawn and Glenn Shephard have become familiar fixtures of the show, Hamidi reveals that not even they are safe when it comes to casting the next season. “All the different positions are on the table each season, including the captain,” she says. However, when it comes to changing a captain “there’s got to be a reason”. With crew, familiar faces often return, with notable examples being chief stewardess Kate Chastain and bosun Malia White. This creates a sense of continuity, Hamidi says. “We often have yacht crew come back in higher positions.” Diversity also informs key crew casting decisions to ensure “different types of people feature in different roles.” “It’s fantastic to have a female bosun or a different culture as head of a department that you don’t expect to see,” says Hamidi. “It’s fun to lean into the reality of the industry because it does exist.”

Below Deck: Inside the boats from the hit reality show

A Below Deck charter typically carries a maximum of 12 superyacht crew on board, including up to three resident crew who work on the yacht full time. Often the official captain of the yacht will drop down to first mate to allow for an incoming Below Deck captain. However, generally these crew roles stay off-camera and are not considered “part of the season,” Hamidi says. “They don’t really fit into part of the story, and if you do see them, it’s in an organic way, like an emergency.”

When it comes to casting new crew members, Hamidi reveals that “most” incoming crew already hold their STCW qualification, with some needing a refresher. While the show is totally unscripted, the casting team does look for a specific type of person when choosing the crew. “It’s a TV show so the crew we choose are definitely outgoing and happy to be open,” Hamidi says. “If they are closed off, it’s hard to tell a story and hard for others to come out and tell them their stories.”

  • Parsifal III : Meet the star of Below Deck's sailing spin-off

The same ethos applies when recruiting the season’s charter guests. As an unscripted show, the guests must be outgoing and excited for the charter. “We really don’t try and make them do things they don’t want to do,” says Hamidi. “We say ‘just have fun, it’s your vacation’.” This, Hamidi claims, is why they have so many guests keen to return, with the Below Deck charter guest casting team having to restrict the amount of returning guests to keep things “fresh”. While it’s well known that Below Deck’s guests pay a subsidised charter rate, Hamidi reveals the opportunity is still very much “aimed at the one per cent”, with guests expected to tip to the full price of the charter. “The guests have a slightly discounted rate but it’s still a pretty penny,” she says. “The average person couldn’t afford it.”

The filming schedule of a typical season of Below Deck is hectic. The intense schedule squeezes nine charters into a filming period of eight weeks. A total of 30 people, comprising yacht crew, guests and camera crew, can be on the boat at any one time. Split into pairs, the camera crew consists of a camera operator and a second team member operating the audio rig. Guided by the director, who watches from a cabin transformed into a “control room”, the camera crew “jump around the yacht” trying to capture key moments of the charter, from pulling anchor to meal prep in the galley. They often arrive onto the yacht at 5.30am and get the cameras rolling before the guests are out of bed. Working a 12-hour shift, they need to ensure all the unfolding action on board is caught on camera while avoiding the other camera crews on board. “The camera crew are running around and hiding from each other while getting all the action,” Hamidi says. This is especially difficult on a four-deck motor yacht, she says, but easier on the wider decks of Parsifal III , the star of Below Deck: Sailing Yacht . To support such an operation, the main charter yacht is accompanied by a support vessel and water taxi, which ferries the camera crew to and from the main yacht. The support vessel, which in previous seasons has been a schooner, catamaran and “mini yacht”, is chosen on the capabilities of its galley to ensure the crews are well fed. The support vessel follows around the mothership but is always carefully anchored out of sight to avoid being in the shot.

While Hamidi admits filming the series is “full on”, for her the hard work begins weeks before when preparation for the show begins. This includes everything from casting the show, choosing a charter yacht, selecting brands to appear on the show and sourcing water toys, such as floating golf courses and superyacht slides. Equipment is checked in the galley, visas are approved and valuable objects – such as art – are removed from the charter yacht. Amid all the noise and intensity of preparing and filming the show, it is the morning water taxi rides to the mothership that stay with Hamidi the most. “You’re out on the water, it’s too loud to have a conversation and it’s beautiful – it’s those moments that stay with me,” she says. Despite two more spin-off series being greenlit, Hamidi is adamant the Below Deck franchise is just getting started. “It’s internationally syndicated, more and more people are interested in yachting, and I think it’s just going to grow and grow and grow.”

Below Deck Mediterranean premieres on Monday, June 28 at 9pm ET/PT on Bravo. New episodes will be available one week early on Peacock beginning Monday, June 21 .

Below Deck: Sailing Yacht Complete Guide: Updates, Cast, Seasons

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

When Below Deck sailed onto Bravo in 2013, it was a hit with fans. It quickly spawned several spin offs. Below Deck Mediterranean debuted in 2013. In February 2020, Below Deck Sailing Yacht premiered.

It followed the lives of “yachties” working on a 177-foot sailing yacht called Parsifal III. This luxurious vessel cruised the Ionian Sea. If you are a newbie, or just brushing up on this franchise, this Below Deck Sailing Yacht guide has everything you need.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Cast Members

Captain Glenn Shephard has been at the helm since the series debuted . He is relaxed until pushed to the limit. During Season 2, Captain Glenn assembled a core team that returned for multiple seasons.

During Season 2, Gary King served as chief officer, and Colin MacRae was the chief engineer. Chief stew Daisy Kelliher also joined the crew. Chef Natasha De Bourg , who had a Michelin-star rating, left after the second season. The guests may have loved her food, but Daisy was critical of her skills.

Chef Ileisha Dell took over the galley during Season 4. She prepared an elaborate, and time-consuming, 10-course meal. Chef’s kiss!

Memorable Moments

There have been plenty of fireworks on this franchise. And we have it all in this handy Below Deck Sailing Yacht guide. During Season 1, Chef Adam Glick and chief stew Jenna MacGillivray hit it off. Their PDA-filled “boatmance” turned off their fellow crew members.

There was baby drama after Season 2 when second stew Dani Soares announced that she was pregnant with Jean-Luc Cerza Lanaux’s child. Jean-Luc requested a DNA test , which confirmed he was the father of Dani’s daughter.

And Gary participated in too many romances. During Season 2, he romanced both deckhand Sydney Zaruba and stew Alli Dore .

Then Daisy and Gary had sex between Seasons 3 and 4. During Season 4, Daisy also hooked up with Gary’s buddy, Colin. Yet Gary continued to flirt with Daisy. Season 4 became awkward in a hurry!

Gary was also involved in another romantic entanglement with stew Mads Herrera . But she locked lips with deckhand Alex Propson , too. Season 4 absolutely delivered!

Add in some nautical accidents, too. Captain Glenn hit the dock twice during Season 2. And during Season 3, a hazardous overnight squall put everyone in danger.

All in all, there was plenty of excitement aboard Parsifal III.

Here’s What the Cast of Below Deck Sailing Yacht Is Currently Up to Now

Are Jenna and Adam still together?

below deck sailing yacht season 1

From a spontaneous proposal failing spectacularly to a joke about being breastfed as an adult, Sailing Yacht was as much a dramatic success as the other franchises. It also left fans wondering about what's happening to the crew since the show wrapped. Did chief stew Jenna and chef Adam stay together? What's going on with Georgia's music? And most important—is Captain Glenn really as cool as we think he is?

Here's what the cast of Below Deck: Sailing Yacht is up to now:

Jenna MacGillivray

When the Canadian stepped onto the Parsifal III, fans got exactly what they hoped for in a chief stew—a no-nonsense leader who also had a romantic spot in her heart for the chef in the galley. Though her relationship with Adam Glick proved to be tumultuous, the two dated for some time after the season wrapped, even taking some time to road-trip together.

These days, Jenna is enjoying some time off from yachting, but given her recent IG pics, she's excited to come back to another charter season.

Madison Stalker

Wherever Madison went, drama always seemed to follow the second stew during season one of Below Deck: Sailing Yacht . In between epic meltdowns (including a major one between her and Jenna over her lack of enthusiasm for her job), she left the boat a better person and leaving fans ready to see more from their new favorite cast member.

Judging by her Instagram account, she's taken a break from yachting (perhaps until next season of the show).

Georgia Grobler

As good of a third stew Georgia was on deck, fans were more invested in her budding music career and growing feelings for a very taken Paget. She proved she was great at her job and could make a career out of yachting.

While it's unclear whether she stayed in the yachting industry post- Sailing Yacht , Georgia's working on music, premiering new music videos on IGTV during the quarantine.

Below Deck Med fans were so excited when Adam joined the crew as the chef for Sailing Yacht . While he abided by the preference sheets this time around, he also began a rocky romance with chief stew Jenna, making most of the crew members wonder if he was there for his job or the girl.

Since the show wrapped, Adam's busy onshore, cooking, and traveling with his adorable puppy. Oh, and Adam has a web series, Stoked , where he travels across the country to meet with local chefs and learn about their regions... all while over a campfire.

Paget Berry and Ciara Duggan

If there was any couple to root for from the entire Below Deck franchise, it's Paget and Ciara. The duo made a great team on deck, and mostly kept their relationship to a minimum on cameras—a first for Bravo! As they were the most familiar with the Parsifal III, the couple was the most reliable, and fans loved seeing their relationship continue blossoming post-filming.

These days, the couple has a lot to be excited about—they're now engaged. While they're soaking up their romantic bliss, they're also still working in yachting, although it's sadly on separate boats.

Byron Hissey

As the chief engineer of Parsifal III, Byron was clearly there to just do his job. But, given how he was the only cast member to have a wife and child back home, he also became the dad of the group, taking care of the other crew members.

Since filming wrapped, it looks like Byron is back on a boat doing exactly what he does best—fixing and making sure the engines run smoothly.

Parker McCown

Relatively new to the yachting industry, fans are more likely to remember the deckhand for his enraged rant about being breastfed by his mother. While he didn't necessarily have all the skills to make it as a deckhand, he definitely had a soft spot for his ex-girlfriend Kaiti, whom he eventually left Parsifal III to go back to at home.

It looks like the decision to leave the show worked out for Parker, as he's now engaged to Kaiti and writing some tunes while onshore.

Chris Miller

As Parker's replacement for the latter half of the season, Chris proved a great deckhand and an asset to the team, all while battling an injury.

These days, Chris seems to be taking some time off from yachting to travel across Europe.

Captain Glenn Sheppard

Captain Glenn was tough, fair, and not afraid to have a good time, which both crew and guests very much appreciated.

Thankfully, his reality TV experience hasn't turned him off yachting forever. Glenn is still the captain for Parsifal III and traveling through the Mediterranean.

Here Are All of the Filming Locations in the History of Below Deck

The show has dropped anchor in many gorgeous locales, from the Caribbean Islands to Thailand.

below deck sailing yacht season 1 when was it filmed

Ever since  Below Deck   washed ashore onto TV screens in  July 2013 , viewers have been invested in how first  Captain Lee Rosbach  and now Captain Kerry Titheradge  would handle both the pressure of running another successful charter season and the yachts themselves.

How to Watch

Watch  Below Deck on Bravo Mondays at 9/8c and next day on  Peacock . Catch up on the Bravo App .

After 10 years of  Below Deck  and more than 100 episodes of the Emmy nominated reality show , the drama and scenic waters never get old. But, the show almost never set sail.

In an interview with  The Daily Dish , executive producer Courtland Cox said that it was hard to find crew members to get on board for the first season. "Initially, it was very hard to get yacht crew members to commit to doing the show because it was an unknown entity," he said. "People didn't know what Below Deck was."

But if people aren't aware by now, they should be. Any season of  Below Deck  will introduce you to charter guests with very unique personalities that you can only encounter on a mega yacht, make you fall in love with crew members who you can't help but to root for, and take you to places you've never been to before.

Read on to learn about every single location in  Below Deck  history.

Below Deck Season 1: St. Maarten

The cast of Below Deck Season 1 sit on a dock

The first episode in the first ever season of  Below Deck  franchise history started out in St. Maarten, which is in the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean. This location made it convenient for guests who wanted to island hop.

"The mega yacht is the ultimate floating playground for the rich and famous," said second deckhand David Bradberry . "Chartering a yacht for just a weekend costs more than your house."

This season was the first to feature yacht  M/Y Honor  and introduce audiences to Captain Lee Rosbach , the fearless leader guiding  Honor and hosting all of the charter guests, as well as  Below Deck  mainstay, Chef Ben Robinson . St. Maarten served as the perfect backdrop for the crew to get to know each other, as they would go to clubs in between charters and get involved in romantic relationships with one another on and off the ship.

Below Deck Season 2: British Virgin Islands

The cast of Below Deck Season 2 on the deck of Ohana

Captain Lee was next in charge of commanding the  M/Y Ohana  around the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean in Season 2 of  Below Deck , docking in the lovely British Virgin Islands.

This was the first time a brother and sister served on the crew together — Kelley Johnson and Amy Johnson — and it was long time chief steward Kate Chastain 's debut working under Captain Lee. Luckily, Kate was able to prove that she knew how to run a tight ship throughout the season, even when things got a little rocky.

The crew had to deal with outspoken and demanding charter guests, in addition to Season 1 chief stew, Adrienne Gang , showing up as a charter guest and causing a bit of chaos.

Hey, no one said that the British Virgin Islands were synonymous with smooth sailing.

Below Deck Season 3: The Bahamas

Below Deck Season 3 takes place in the Bahamas.

New view, new crew. Captain Lee, chief stew Kate, and bosun Eddie Lucas all made their return in Season 3, this time sailing around the Bahamas on  M/Y Eros.

"The Bahamas is such a unique chain of islands," Eddie said in Season 3 episode 1, when the boat was docked in Abaco, Bahamas.

The azure waters also served as a scenic backdrop for everything else that went down. The Real Housewives of Atlanta  cast member,  Cynthia Bailey , showed up as a charter guest, and two crew members took Captain Lee up on his favorite threat of offering them a ticket home with their tip payout — with Chef Ben having to come to the rescue in later episodes to pick up the pieces.

Below Deck Season 4: U.S. Virgin Islands

Captain Lee sailed to the US Virgin Islands in Below Deck Season 4.

Kate, Chef Ben, newly promoted bosun Kelley Johnson , and Captain Lee found themselves docked in the U.S. Virgin Islands around Tortola, at the start of Season 4. This time, the crew was aboard  M/Y Valor , and Kate could not have been happier. "This is like, my dream interior," she said, when she got on the boat in Season 4, Episode 1.

"I always enjoy working for Captain Lee," Kate added. "We know each other's quirks, we know each other's strengths, and he trusts me."

Although Captain Lee wished that this would be the one charter season without a change in crew members, things got a little tense with senior deckhand, Trevor Walker , due to "lack of respect," which led to his removal from the boat and Captain Lee sending for a replacement.

Below Deck Season 5: St. Maarten

Below Deck season 5 takes place in Saint Maarten.

Captain Lee, Kate, and newly promoted lead deckhand , Nico Scholly , returned for Season 5 and headed back to the Caribbean and to Saint Maarten, where the first season was shot. "Oh, to be back in the Caribbean," Kate said in Season 5, Episode 1. "I'm excited."

RELATED: Where to Watch and Stream Below Deck

But there was a bit of a learning curve for the crew to get over. Although they were back on board  M/Y Valor , this was Captain Lee's most "green" crew yet , with the majority of the deckhands and stewards (besides the returning members) having minimal experience.

Below Deck Season 6: Tahiti

Below Deck Season 6 took place for the first time outside of the Caribbean.

In the sixth season, Captain Lee got to say goodbye to the Caribbean and hello to Tahiti for a much welcomed change of pace from the past five yachting seasons. "Tahiti is gorgeous," Kate said in Season 6, Episode 1. "I feel like I've stepped back into a land before time."

This location change was in the wake of Hurricane Irma , which devastated the Caribbean in 2017. "It's going to take them a while to recover from it," Captain Lee said in Episode 1, this time steering M/Y Seanna . "Tahiti has been on my bucket list for years and years. And while we're all pulling and we all stand behind the Caribbean, we are really excited to be chartering here this season."

But a change of location proved to be a bit difficult, mainly with new weather, new waters, and a gorgeous, lush location to get adjusted to. Still, Captain Lee and Kate, who were the only returning crew members, were able to make do, even with an all new crew and brand new chef.

Below Deck Season 7: Phuket, Thailand

Kate Chastain stands on the boat in Thailand.

Season 7 found Captain Lee, his trusty chief stew , Kate, and returning bosun, Ashton Pienaar , in Thailand, which was a brand new territory and waters for all three of them. "I am so excited to be in Thailand," Kate said in Season 7, Episode 1. "This has been a bucket list item for years."

"The scenery in Thailand is just massively impressive," Captain Lee added.

Again, they found themselves aboard  M/Y Valor  which was like "riding a bike," Kate noted, but with a whole new crew . Luckily, the turquoise blue waters and lush environment surrounding them helped with dissipating any new-season jitters and getting adjusted to the extreme heat outside.

But, at the end of Season 7, viewers said goodbye to Kate .

Below Deck Season 8: Antigua

Captain Lee returned to the Caribbean in Season 8 of Below Deck.

Season 8 saw the return of Captain Lee and  bosun, Eddie  (who had appeared on the first three seasons) to both the  M/Y Seanna and the Caribbean, with the crew docking the boat off the coast of Antigua.

Of course, Captain Lee was excited. "It's been years since I've been in the Caribbean, and I miss the hell out of it," he said in Season 8, Episode 1. "White sandy beaches, crystal blue water. It's like putting on your favorite pair of blue jeans. It's like going home again."

But home isn't always where the heart is. Viewers were introduced to new, no-nonsense Chef Rachel Hargrove , detail-oriented chief stew, Francesca Rubi , and a relatively green crew. But, the charter season was cut short when the COVID-19 pandemic started spreading across the world, leaving Captain Lee and the crew unsure of the future.

Below Deck Season 9: St. Kitts

Eddie returned for Season 9 of Below Deck.

"Saint Kitts is like absolute paradise," Eddie said in Season 9, Episode 1, returning after  getting promoted to first mate at the end of Season 8. "It seems untouched, wild. Exotic, volcanic, explosive."

And this season certainly started off with a bang: Captain Lee had a delay getting to the ship,  and  sent in a replacement , Captain Sean , to steer the  M/Y Seanna for the first two episodes. But even with that hiccup, returning Chef Rachel was still able to knock out some innovative meals while the rest of the new crew figured out their feelings for one another while trying to keep their guests as happy as possible.

Below Deck Season 10: St. Lucia

Below Deck Season 10 takes place in St. Lucia

Season 10 started out with a new yacht,  M/Y  St. David , and a brand new location in the Caribbean — St. Lucia — for the Below Deck crew. Luckily, it was one of Captain Lee's favorites places to sail.

"St. Lucia is the most beautiful island in the Caribbean," Captain Lee said in Season 10 Episode 1. "It's green from beach, all the way up to the top. And it's lush. It's straight out of a postcard. And it's just like, wow."

RELATED: The Below Deck Captains: A Complete List

But Season 10 also started off with a brand new array of challenges — including a medical issue for Captain Lee , which forced him to leave the season for a few charters; he was  temporarily replaced by  Below Deck Mediterranean's   Captain Sandy Yawn . This season also saw the crew figure out how to meet the demands of guests and figure out their relationships with one another, all while attempting to navigate the large interior of the  St. David .

In the words of Captain Lee, it had all of the makings of a "sh-t sandwich." But, thanks to their fearless leader, the crew was able to make it through and complete yet another successful charter season.

Below Deck Season 11: Grenada

The harbor of St. George in Grenada

Season 11 introduced a brand new captain — Below Deck Adventure ’s Captain Kerry Titheradge — and a brand new location, Grenada .

Not to be confused with Granada , a city in Spain that sits at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, Grenada is an island country located in the Caribbean. It is nicknamed the “ Spice Isle ” due to its production of spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves.

Grenada is located 30 miles away from the Grenadines island chain located in the West Indies, and about 125 miles north of Venezuela.

This island is known its lush climate, tropical temperatures, sandy beaches, and opportunity for adventure, making it the perfect docking spot for Season 11.

The best jobs are often defined by the perks they offer: a high pay, flexibility of work hours, etc. But what if one perk of your job was the opportunity to travel to exotic locations on a super-luxurious cruise? This is exactly the kind of “dream job” that the cast of ‘Below Deck ’ have.

‘Below Deck’ is a reality television series that follows several crew members of a luxury yacht that travels to a holiday destination with numerous guests. The crew are faced with countless challenges as they aim to make the guests’ experience as hospitable and pleasant as possible. Often called “yachties,” the crew members juggle various personal conflicts as they strive to work hard and party harder by visiting some truly mesmerizing places.

Below Deck Filming Locations

Each season, a new group of guests are seen aboard the ‘Below Deck’ yacht. Apart from that, the destination also changes as the ‘Below Deck’ crew get an opportunity to travel to another location altogether, more vibrant than the last.

Many of you might be wondering where ‘Below Deck’ is actually filmed. Well, owing to the format of the show, most of the filming for ‘Below Deck’ takes place aboard a luxurious yacht. Apart from that, the locations that the yacht travels to are also picturesquely depicted on the show. These gorgeous locales are one of the highlights of the series, to be honest.

Majority of the filming for ‘Below Deck’ takes place on the multi-million dollar yacht that the crew operates and manages. Most of the crew is rejigged each season, save for the captain, Lee Rosbach who leads the operations.

For the seventh season of the show, a yacht named “Valor” is used. The same charter vessel had been used for the fourth and fifth season of the show. However, outside the show, the yacht is called “BG.” Just to get an idea on how premium “BG” or “Valor” is, consider its weekly rental rate (exclusive of fuel charges): $160,500.

https://twitter.com/brunodsailor/status/909826220761796608

A yacht named “My Seanna” was used for filming the sixth season of the show while “Eros/Mustang Sally,” “Ohana/Rhino” and “Honor/Lumiere” were used for shooting the third, second and first seasons of ‘Below Deck’ respectively.

The seventh season of ‘Below Deck’ was filmed in Thailand. The yacht sailed the Andaman Sea and the Phang Nga Bay. The Southeast Asian country is known for its beautiful, sandy beaches and pristine islands.

The Ao Po Grand Marina in Phuket serves as the home port for Valor on season 7 of ‘Below Deck.’ The docking location acts as a gateway to the Phang Nga Bay and has several bars and restaurants to serve those sailing. This is where the crew of ‘Below Deck’ kick back their feet and enjoy a night of drinking, or two.

Moreover, Ko Poda Island is also one of the locations where the yacht will be heading to for the seventh season. The imposing and magnificent island has become quite a hub for snorkeling thanks to the shallow stretches of water around its clean, sandy coast. Apart from that, the iconic Phi Phi Islands are also a filming location and destination for ‘Below Deck’ apart from Koh Rang Yai Island, Ko Yao Yai and Laem Krating.

Other Locations

As mentioned earlier, ‘Below Deck’ takes its crew and guests to a different part of the globe in each season. For instance, the sixth season of the show was set outside the Caribbean region, in the islands of Tahiti. On the other hand, the fifth season was set and filmed in St. Martin while the fourth season took place in the Virgin Islands . Bahamas serves as the location for the third season while the second season was set in the British Virgin Islands and the first one around the Caribbean.

Season 4 of ‘Below Deck Sailing Yacht’ Takes Place In *These* Idyllic Locations

Haylee Thorson - Author

May 15 2023, Published 11:23 a.m. ET

It’s no secret that the Parsifal III has set sail in some incredibly spectacular locations throughout the Below Deck spin-off series’s time on air. From Greece to Croatia to Spain, the first three seasons of Below Deck Sailing Yacht featured idyllic backdrops that guests were lucky enough to sail to.

And the fourth installment is no different. Would it be a season of a show in the Below Deck franchise if the filming locations weren't completely Instagram-worthy?

Curious to learn more about the filming locations of Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 4 ? We have all the details.

Where was ‘Below Deck Sailing Yacht’ Season 4 filmed?

For this season, Captain Glenn Shephard and the crew of old timers and fresh faces cruised around Sardinia, Italy — the Mediterranean Sea’s second-largest island.

“My first time coming to Sardinia was when I got my first taste of yachting, which was way back in 1984,” Captain Glenn revealed in the first episode of Season 4, which premiered on April 10, 2023.

“It’s got white sandy beaches, endless anchorages, [and] beautiful turquoise water. I love it. It’s really, really special.”

However, the Parsifal III isn’t limited to just Sardinia (or Italy, for that matter) in this installment of the Bravo series.

Season 4’s filming locations also include Corsica, France. The island is the fourth-largest island in the Mediterranean, featuring countless coastal towns, sky-high peaks, and lush forests.

And the clientele expects nothing less. American Idol Season 1 runner-up Justin Guarini hopped aboard the Parsifal III for a vacation to Corsica during one Season 4 episode of Below Deck Sailing Yacht and proved just how coveted these charters are.

The Parsifal III is a superyacht superstar in ‘Below Deck Sailing Yacht.’

Below Deck Sailing Yacht ’s Parsifal III is reality royalty as far as superyachts are concerned. When speaking with Nautic Expo , owner Kim Vibe-Petersen explained how the luxury yacht now goes hand-in-hand with the show.

“It’s free advertising,” Kim admitted. “The name of the yacht will come to people’s minds, especially to someone who has never chartered a yacht before. They will see that name and know the boat from the show.”

Clocking in at 54 meters, the Parsifal III features five cabins and can accommodate up to 12 guests.

Manufactured by the Italian shipyard Perini Navi and interiorly designed by Rémi Tessier, the superyacht boasts everything from a deck jacuzzi to a plunge pool.

The Parsifal III also offers a range of watersports equipment, such as jet skis, wakeboards, Open Bic sailboats, and more.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Mads BelowDeck (@_madhatta)

The luxury yacht — built in 2005 — has accumulated countless awards throughout its time at sea. The Parsifal III won Sailing Superyacht of the Year in 2006 at the Boat International Superyacht Awards.

“From 2006 to 2009, we didn’t use the boat ourselves because it was (totally) chartered out — 25 weeks a year, which is unheard of,” Kim told Boat International . “We inspired the whole industry.”

According to YachtCharterFleet , summer charter rates begin at $255,000 per week, while winter prices start at $211,500 per week. So yeah, luxury superyacht indeed.

Since Bravo’s Below Deck first aired in 2013, its popularity has grown exponentially with viewers drawn to the compelling upstairs/downstairs format that has served as a pivotal point for all the drama and antics taking place aboard the superyachts each season. The beautiful locations, meanwhile, have provided the perfect backdrop for every instalment of the show and its subsequent spin-off series.

From the paradisiacal islands of the Caribbean to the majestic snow-capped peaks of Norway , we take a closer look at the spectacular destinations the Below Deck yachts have visited since it first began.

Yachts anchored in a sheltered cove in Antigua Harbor, Caribbean

The show’s inaugural season premiered in the Caribbean, which covered a number of superyacht hotspots in the region, kicking off the show in spectacular style from the charming Leeward Island of St Martin  – which also provided the tropical setting for Below Deck season 5.

Since then, this glittering archipelago has featured in no less than four seasons of Below Deck , including the beautiful islands of St Kitts & Nevis (season 9) and Antigua (season 8) – the undisputed superyacht hub of the Caribbean.

Located between Puerto Rico and Dominica, the Leeward islands offer an intoxicating mix of sublime white sand beaches, glamorous 5-star resorts and stunning natural beauty, not to mention astonishing clear waters brimming with life, as well as an array of superb marinas, making this region ideal cruising territory for superyachts and their guests.

A snorkeler at The Baths on Virgin Gorda in the BVIs, Caribbean

Featuring in season 2 of Bravo’s original reality series, the British Virgin Islands created a picture-perfect backdrop to the show, with the archipelago’s largest island of Tortola , as well as party island Jost van Dyke and the eternally exquisite Virgin Gorda, providing most of the glorious scenery.

Red phone box on a tropical island in the BVIs, Caribbean

Some of the highlights of a private yacht charter here include the BVI’s most famous landmark, The Baths in Virgin Gorda’s 7-acre National Park – a natural phenomenon of towering boulders and beautiful jade-green sea grottos, as well as the legendary Soggy Dollar Bar and Foxy’s – famous for its New Year's Eve parties on the island of Jost van Dyke, and Smuggler’s Cove – an instagram-worthy beach tucked away on Tortola’s west coast, featuring implausibly clear blue waters perfect for snorkeling.

Below Deck  also returned to the Virgin islands for its 4th season, this time around the beautiful US Virgin Islands , including popular tourist hubs  St Thomas , St Croix and the tranquil island of St John.

St Lucia beach with huts and palm trees in the Caribbean

Season 10 of Below Deck centered around the alluring island of St Lucia , home to the majestic twin peaks of the Pitons that set off the stunning scenery for the reality show’s latest season.

Waterfall in St Lucia in the Caribbean

Known as the “Jewel of the Windward Islands ”, St Lucia plays host to an array of idyllic beaches, picturesque harbors and chic restaurants. Her lush jungle-clad interior is awash with an abundance of tropical flora and fauna, offering a heady scent for anyone undertaking the popular hike up the island’s 3,000-foot Mount Gimie.

Beautiful tropical beach in the Bahamas with palm trees over white sand and turquoise water

While not strictly part of the Caribbean, the Bahamas were the destination of choice for Below Deck 's season 3; a yacht paradise of pellucid turquoise waters teeming with life and tropical islands that have become a playground for the SuperyachtSet and A-listers looking to escape the winter blues.

Beautiful Oia town in Santorini, Greece

In 2016, the first season of Below Deck Mediterranean graced our screens, where the show’s producers shrewdly opted to foreground Greece’s beautiful Cyclades archipelago for its inaugural season.

Home to the iconic blue-domed white-washed buildings that are synonymous with images of Greece, this group of islands has proved fertile cruising grounds for luxury yacht charters for years, whose guests come to immerse themselves in the islands’ rich cultural heritage, stunning beaches and breathtaking scenic beauty, not to mention the glamorous party scene.

below deck sailing yacht season 1 when was it filmed

Comprising a number of celebrated islands, including Mykonos and Santorini , yacht charter itineraries here are brimming with opportunities as the activities and sightseeing options are endless, and with each island only a stone's throw from each other, you can change your scenery at a moment’s notice.

Interestingly, a similar location decision was made for Below Deck Sailing Yacht ’s premier season on board yacht PARSIFAL III , this time set around Greece’s Ionian island of Corfu .

The island’s natural beauty has been committed to celluloid several times over, featuring in a number of TV and films over the years, including James Bond’s For Your Eyes Only and the Bafta-nominated TV series The Durrell’s .

Corfu is part of Greece’s Ionian archipelago ; a chain of strikingly beautiful islands, characterized by lush mountainous interiors, dramatic coastlines, charming fishing villages, intriguing cultural heritage and some of the finest beaches in Greece.

One of the most popular destinations for superyacht charters in the East Mediterranean , Croatia is awash with ancient archaeological treasures, seriously beautiful landscapes and endless idyllic islands and islets peppered across the region, which is probably why this gem of the Adriatic has featured in 3 seasons of the Below Deck franchise; seasons 2 and 6 of Below Deck Mediterranean and season 2 of Below Deck Sailing yacht .

Boasting over 1,200 islands, glorious balmy climate and deeply rich history, not to mention low VAT rate compared with its West Mediterranean cousins, its small wonder Croatia is a superyacht paradise during the summer months and beyond.

The Below Deck yachts traveled to a number of popular hotspots within the region, including the UNESCO Heritage city of Dubrovnik , Croatia’s “jewel” Spilt  and the beautiful Šibenik, as well as popping across its southern border to enjoy the facilities at the award-winning marina at Porto Montenegro .

Other Mediterranean destinations visited by yachts on the show include Italy's famous Amalfi Coast (season 3), the eternally glamorous French Riviera (season 4), the popular Spanish archipelago of the Balearics (season 5), and the historic splendor of Malta , which is the location for Below Deck Mediterranean ’s latest season 7 featuring the indomitable Captain Sandy Yawn on board superyacht HOME .

For seasons 6, Below Deck broke with tradition and headed to the South Pacific outpost of Tahiti , where filming took place on board superyacht STARSHIP (previously M/Y SEANNA) with the show’s stalwart Captain Lee Rosbach.

Paradise beach in Tahiti

Set amongst a scattering of idyllic islands in the French Polynesia archipelago, Tahiti is that rare blend of paradisiacal beauty with a cosmopolitan twist courtesy of its rich cultural links with France as a protectorate of that country. Guests on yacht charters here can immerse themselves in the island's extraordinary blue-lagoon-like beauty while still able to enjoy the finest cuisine, boutique shopping and myriad excellent facilities offered by a host of luxury resorts.

Long-tailed boats are pulled up onto a golden beach lapped by green waters with a limestone rocky outcrop in the distance

Below Deck Season 7, meanwhile, continued with the tropical theme, this time foregrounding the unparalleled beauty of Thailand , with Ao Po Grand Marina in Phuket providing the home port for motor yacht BG (previously VALOR) during the show.

Filming took place around the beautiful islands of the Andaman Sea, including Phang Nga Bay , home to 100 islands and a wealth of majestic limestone karsts, including Koh Ta-pu – one of Thailand’s most famous landmarks that appeared in the James Bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun . Soaring 20 meters above the water, the tall vertical rock can be taken in from the sandy shores of Koh Phing Ghan.

Other notable filming locations include the famous Phi Phi Islands , home to Maya Bay – the idyllic setting for the 1999 film The Beach  starring Leonardo DiCaprio, as well as Ko Poda island renowned for its vast stretches of powder-fine sand beaches and excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities.

The latest Below Deck iterations; Below Deck Down Under and Below Deck Adventure, have broken the mold yet further with adrenalin-fuelled adventures adding to the mix.

Whitsundays in Australia

Below Deck Down Under is set in Australia’s sublime Whitsundays ; a heavenly cluster of islands located 34 miles off the coast of Queensland. Characterized by its array of dreamy islands fringed by white sands and intense turquoise-blue waters that form part of the Great Barrier Reef – one of the world’s seven natural wonders – this region offers prime cruising grounds for luxury yacht rentals.

Meanwhile Below Deck Adventure is set in the sub-Arctic wilderness of Norway , where the setting of glacial fjords and majestic mountain peaks form part of the show’s action, with guests partaking in a series of high-octane thrills and spills throughout the season.

Norway is fast becoming a hotspot for superyachts eschewing the usual Mediterranean and Caribbean destinations for the more unique experiences on offer in this beautiful part of the world. Renowned for its dramatic scenery, sheer raw beauty, michelin-star dining experiences and the iconic Northern Lights , luxury yacht charters around this Scandinavian region promise to be nothing short of magical.

8 below deck bosuns who should've been fired but weren't.

Below Deck has seen so many crew members throughout the years. There’s been a number of bosun on board who should’ve been fired but weren’t.

  • Bosuns on "Below Deck" face high-pressure situations but some should've been fired for poor performance.
  • Bosuns play a crucial role on superyachts, acting as right-hand to captains & ensuring crew and guest safety.
  • Instances throughout "Below Deck" history have shown bosuns who made mistakes but were not terminated.

Below Deck has rotated through several bosuns across the franchise that should’ve been fired but weren’t. Below Deck follows the lives of crews during charters on superyachts. The show has been notorious for creating hectic moments as the crews deal with the pressures of working on the yachts. Sometimes, the pressure gets to the crew. Things can get out of control, and that’s when a captain may step in and resort to terminating employment. The bosun has one of the toughest jobs aboard , as they act as the captain's right-hand and regulate the superyachts' safety.

Bosun Jared Woodin was fired on Below Deck season 11, one of the best reality TV shows right now , after doing a poor job and getting into an altercation with deckhand Kyle Stillie. Jared struggled personally and professionally with his job. Bosuns have big shoes to fill when they sign up for the job. Without a successful bosun, the safety of the crew and charter guests is on the line. Throughout Below Deck history, there have been some who haven’t done their job the best , and they should have been fired but weren’t.

8 Below Deck Chief Stews Who Are The Worst

8 paget berry, below deck sailing yacht season 1.

Paget Berry had a rough time on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 1. During the season, Paget’s relationships were messy . He dated deckhand Ciara Duggann, who worked in the same department as him. Things got rough when he started flirting with third stew Georgia Grobler. Paget’s flirting with Georgia convoluted his relationship with Ciara. He also often got into disagreements with deckhand Parker McCown. Paget should have been fired, but he also admitted he would never return to Below Deck because of how he was edited during Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 1.

7 Conrad Empson

Below deck mediterranean season 3.

Conrad Empson was the bosun on Below Deck Mediterranean season 3 under Captain Sandy Yawn. Most of Conrad’s time on Below Deck Med season 3 aboard the Talisman Maiton wasn’t memorable for his performance at his job. Instead, Conrad’s work as a bosun often suffered because of his “boatmance” with Chief Stew Hannah Ferrier. Conrad and Hannah had a hectic romance on Below Deck Med season 3, and even Captain Sandy had to step in. Captain Sandy saw that Conrad’s work efforts were diminishing because of his relationship with Hannah, and she warned him about her.

6 Eddie Lucas

Below deck season 1-3, 8, & 9.

Eddie Lucas was the bosun on many Below Deck seasons. He’s had quite a journey on the show, as he’s been featured several times at varying times of his life. During his third season on Below Deck season 3 , Eddie cheated on his then-girlfriend, with stewardess Rocky Dakota. During their boatmance, they hide their relationship from everyone on Below Deck season 3. By the season finale, they confirmed they were hooking up. Eddie wasn’t too mature in his early seasons, and he still made mistakes when he came back to Below Deck years later.

During Below Deck season 9, Heather Chase said a racial slur in front of Rayna Lindsey. At the Below Deck season 9 reunion, it was revealed that Rayna told Eddie about this, and he did not take any action when he found out Heather had said it. In response to this, Eddie alleged Rayna said a homophobic slur . During the episode, Eddie said he didn’t “ remember the conversation ” he had with Rayna about this, but footage proved that the conversation did happen. Eddie did not handle this situation adequately and should have been fired.

5 Jamie Sayed

Below deck down under season 1.

A lot of Below Deck fans think Jamie Sayed is the worst cast member from Below Deck Down Under season 1. Jamie thought he was in charge of everyone, and barked orders at the crew members instead of working with them. Jamie was utterly disrespectful towards Captain Jason Chambers throughout the season. He lacked respect for Captain Jason, and chose to simply call him “ Jason .” Jamie was disrespectful towards the rest of the Below Deck Down Under crew, and his attitude towards Captain Jason should have had him fired. He was not asked back for Below Deck Down Under season 2.

4 João Franco

Below deck mediterranean season 3 & 4, below deck down under season 2.

João Franco’s behavior on Below Deck Mediterranean season 3 was unacceptable. João’s alter-ego, self-named Jezabob, came through when he was drinking. João was incredibly rude and degrading to the women of the crew when he was intoxicated. During one night of drinking, he shattered a glass in his hand and called Aesha Scott a “ Russian prostitute .” He should have been fired for his misogynistic ways, but Captain Sandy decided to promote him to Bosun on Below Deck Med season 4. Captain Sandy saw potential in him, and although his attitude changed by his second season, he still should’ve been fired.

3 Ashton Pienaar

Below deck season 6 & 7.

Ashton Pienaar was a deckhand on Below Deck season 6 and was later promoted to bosun during season 7. He started as a fan-favorite crew member and had a near-fatal accident on board when his foot got caught in a tow line, and he was dragged into the ocean. However, during Below Deck season 7, Ashton changed. When the crew members went out together, Ashton got far too drunk and started acting aggressively. He clashed with Chief Stew Kate Chastain several times and punched the inside of a van door during a night out.

2 Ross McHarg

Below deck season 10.

Like many other bosuns, Ross McHarg’s time on Below Deck season 10 was soured by his boatmance with deckhand Katie Glaser. Ross was very flirtatious, and this set his relationship with Katie onboard up for disaster. He got himself involved in drama that was unrelated to work. Ross was disrespectful towards Katie, as he always flirted with second stew Alissa Humber and talked with other women on their nights out. Captain Lee Rosbach and Captain Sandy enjoyed working professionally with Ross, but his inclination towards drama should have gotten him fired on Below Deck season 10.

1 Gary King

Below deck sailing yacht season 2-5.

Gary King is one of the most controversial Below Deck franchise crew members. He appeared in several seasons of Below Deck Sailing Yacht and is memorable for his playboy-like antics. Gary has been involved with many boatmances during his time on Below Deck . Fans have called Gary problematic and a creep . This was corroborated when Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 makeup artist Samantha Suarez accused Gary of sexual misconduct. Part of Samantha’s job included escorting cast members from their rooms to where they would film interview segments. She alleged that one night, things got out of hand.

Allegedly, Gary was incredibly intoxicated, and she had to take him back to his hotel room after filming a confessional. As per Rolling Stone , Samantha said that Gary grabbed her and restrained her from behind, preventing her from leaving the hotel room before she was able to get away. Samantha reported this to the production and said that nothing happened. Below Deck ’s production issued a statement that said they investigated the claims at the time, and Gary wasn’t fired. Instead, he was asked back for Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4, when he undoubtedly should have been fired.

Below Deck has featured many crew members throughout its time on air. Bosuns have been favored crew members as they hold an important job working closely with the Below Deck captains. There have been some great bosuns over the years, and there have been some terrible bosuns as well.

Below Deck season 11 airs Mondays at 9 p.m. EDT on Bravo, then streams the following day on Peacock.

Below Deck Med Season 9 trailer teases Aesha Scott's return, a Captain Sandy proposal, premiere date, and more

B ravo has just pulled a fast one on Below Deck fans by revealing Below Deck Med Season 9 will air before Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5.

It was a big surprise, considering Below Deck Med Season 8 aired right before Below Deck Season 11, which is currently on air.

However, the trailer was dropped, revealing that Aesha Scott has returned to Below Deck Med to work with her friend, Captain Sandy Yawn.

Another familiar face is in the trailer – Elena Dubaich from Season 7 of Below Deck Med.

Elena was only on for a hot second to replace Kyle Viljoen after his epic fall toward the end of the season.

The upcoming season is historic for Below Deck Med, filming for the first time in Athens, Greece.

Below Deck Med Season 9 trailer features Captain Sandy Yawn’s proposal and more crew chaos

Along with Aesha’s return, the trailer reveals Below Deck Med fans will see Captain Sandy propose to her now fiancee Leah Shafer.

That’s right, the two got engaged last summer and are set to wed next month. It turns out the moment was televised and her whole crew was watching.

In true Below Deck Med fashion, the season is anything but smooth sailing. Aesha is in for a tough time with her two stews constantly at each other’s throats.

In fact, at one point, the drama becomes too much for Aesha, who declares, “This is actually the hardest management situation I’ve ever had.”

Some crew boatmance drama goes down, too, leading to a lust triangle that happens even though one person is already in a relationship. The deck team faces a major mishap with the anchor that might have disastrous repercussions.

Below Deck Med fans can expect a slew of over-the-top demanding charter guests, some firings, fighting, and all-around craziness.

When does Below Deck Med Season 9 premiere?

Monday, June 3, kicks off the new Season 9 of Below Deck at 9/8c. No, Below Deck Med won’t be available early on Peacock. Instead, episodes will drop on the streaming service the next day.

Aside from what we see in the trailer, a press release for Below Deck Med gives fans a hint at what’s in store for the Mustique crew.

“Amidst a saga of delayed provisions, managing a complicated interior department and a medical emergency, Aesha strives to ensure the guests are treated to a five-star service experience.,” read the press release. “Chef Jono, a self-taught culinary architect, quickly learns he has high expectations to fill to prove his culinary capabilities to the guests. Meanwhile, the deck crew faces its own hurdles and must learn that communication is key in order to successfully get through the season.”

Below Deck Season 11 is coming to an end. Although Monsters and Critics previously reported Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 would air next, there’s been a change of plans. Below Deck Med Season 9 hitting Bravo airwaves in June.

What do you think of Below Deck Med returning already?

Below Deck Med Season 9 premieres on Monday, June 3 at 9/8c on Bravo. Seasons 1-8 are streaming on Peacock.

Bravo has just pulled a fast one on Below Deck fans by revealing Below Deck Med Season 9 will air before Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5. It was a big surprise, considering Below Deck Med Season 8 aired right before Below Deck Season 11, which is currently on air. However, the trailer was dropped,

How many episodes are left in Below Deck Season 11?

Captain Kerry Titheradge on Below Deck Season 11

Below Deck Season 11 has been well into the second half for a few weeks now.

It’s been quite a season that honestly feels very long although entertaining.

However, we aren’t as close to Season 11 of Below Deck wrapping up as fans might think.

Oh yes, the drama isn’t slowing down anytime soon nor are the crew exits.

Let’s take a look at the episode still to come this season.

Last night, Below Deck Season 11 Episode 12 aired, featuring Chef Anthony Iracane getting fired by Captain Kerry Titheradge. When the captain told Chief Stew Fraser Olender about the firing, he revealed three charters remained in the season.

That means there are at least five episodes left in Below Deck Season 11. Each charter tends to last about two episodes, but if there’s a short charter, it could only be one episode.

We know that in the mid-season trailer shared nine episodes were left then. Five more episodes would get us to the 17 episodes being promoted in the trailer.

Only a handful of episodes left doesn’t mean the drama will be lacking. While the chef may be gone Below Deck spoilers tease that Paris Fields immediately clashes with Anthony’s replacement.

Ben Willoughby also tries to restart a former romance leading us to believe someone else in the interior may leave.

More Below Deck news

There’s so much going down on and off-screen in the Below Deck universe.

As Monsters and Critics previously reported , Fraser clapped back at the trolls, including Jill Zarin, in a one fitting his sass and wit.

Captain Kerry and Ben are at odds after the bosun called out the captain for talking bad about him.

Below Deck fans are not happy with what went down with Anthony, and they are not holding back their thoughts on the hot topic.

We also know that Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 will kick off this summer. Fans are anxiously waiting for more details on the show, especially how Gary King will fit in after sexual misconduct allegations came to light last summer.

It’s been a roller coaster ride of a season for Below Deck fans with a new captain and so many over-the-top demanding charter guests. The end won’t happen for another few weeks so keep watching to make sure not a moment of the chaos is missed.

Below Deck airs Mondays at 9/8c on Bravo. Seasons 1-11 are streaming on Peacock.
