Lucia 40 catamaran.

Launched by Fountaine Pajot in June 2015, the Lucia 40 is a sailing catamaran which follows the lead of the Helia 44 and Saba 50 and offers a much larger volume than Lipari 41. Lucia 40 mainly attracts small families and cruising couples as it is easy on the pocket and easier to manage, offering the same ease and comfort as any other 50ft tall catamaran would.

DESIGN – INTERIOR & EXTERIOR

Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40 catamaran is a product of Berret-Racoupeau Yacht Design. For a 40-footer, the Lucia 40 offers a lot more space on board than most other catamarans its size. It has been designed in such a way as to allow for the livability of a much bigger vessel while also keeping the cost of maintenance, insurance, and dockage, etc as low as that of a 40-footer catamaran.

The designers of the Lucia 40 have removed the forward berths of the previous model and installed larger storage lockers in the chest instead. This opened up a lot of space for them to move everything forward, allowing for a large, spacious aft cockpit.

The transom steps that lead to the deck are wide and sturdy and there are ideally-placed handholds that make boarding from the dock or the dinghy easy and less risky.

The cockpit of the Lucia 40 is commodious with its 130 sq. ft. plan, roughly the same space as that offered by Fountaine Pajot Helia 44. The cockpit houses a long portside settee which can easily accommodate up to eight people around a table and even offers a small drawer of fridge underneath the seat for storing drinks.  In addition to the main table and the settee, the cockpit of the Lucia 40 features a starboard lounge and a transom seat so that more people, family or friends can be hosted. The entire cockpit is covered and well-protected from the weather by a composite Bimini.

The raised helm station, equipped with a Raymarine multifunction display, is to starboard and can be accessed not only from the deck but also from the cockpit via a couple of steps. The helm seat is comfortable and can easily accommodate two people, allowing each to work without coming in the way of the other. There is also a built-in sheet bin to collect the spaghetti. Although the helm station offers a view of all four corners of the vessel with excellent visibility forward, it is not absolutely ideal as the view of the transom is blocked by the hard Bimini.

The foredeck of the Lucia 40 offers a small trampoline and a lounge in the form of two lounging cushions covering the two chest lockers (one for water tank and one for line stowage each) underneath the sun pad.

The saloon of the Lucia 40 is on the same level as its cockpit and is easily accessed from the cockpit via a narrow, sliding door. The sliding window separating the galley from the cockpit along with the sliding door gives the saloon and the cockpit an impression of one large room.

The saloon has an L-shaped settee around a drop-down table that can easily accommodate six people. The table itself can be converted into a daybed along and a mattress can be added on top of it. Perhaps the best part of the Lucia 40 saloon is how luminous and well-ventilated it is. The windows are all panoramic and continuous, allowing for light to filter in. There are multiple opening hatches to enjoy the sea breeze within the saloon.

The navigation station is angled and enjoys a full, unobstructed view of the outside. However, the navigation station does not have a dedicated seat of its own but rather shares it with the L-shaped settee.

The galley on board the Lucia 40 is cleverly positioned aft so that it is right in between the saloon and the cockpit. The sliding window allows easy and efficient serving of food and drinks not only within the saloon but also out into the cockpit. The galley itself is L-shaped and has smooth countertops. Although the countertop space is not as much as one might desire, multiple drawers make up for it. The galley comes equipped with a stainless steel sink, three-burner Eno stove, and an oven. The drawer fridge and a freezer are installed opposite to the galley to the port side.

ACCOMMODATIONS

The Lucia 40 is available in four different layouts, opening up a number of choices for customers to choose a version that best suits their needs.

The Maestro version of the Lucia 40 has three cabins in total, including a large owner’s suite. Each of the two guest cabins have their own personal bathrooms.

Another layout of the Maestro version offers an option of a shared bathroom for the guest cabins along with a separate bathroom for the owner’s suite. The Quintet version consists of four double cabins complete with their own private en-suite facilities or four double cabins with 2 shared bathrooms. Either way, the Lucia 40 appeals to both charter companies and private sailors.

The entire starboard hull in the owner’s version is dedicated to the owner’s suite. It has an island berth aft with access all around and a desk in the middle. The exclusive en-suite has a separate shower and head. However, there is no door separating the head from the cabin. There is also plenty of storage available throughout the interior accommodations to cater to a family’s need.

ENGINE ROOM

Fountaine Pajot’s Lucia 40 is powered by twin 20 HP Volvo Penta diesel engines, located in the engine room at the aft deck. The engine room is spacious and can easily be accessed for maintenance and routine checks. In addition to the standard engines, the Lucia 40 can also be equipped with an optional Northern Light Genset in the port engine room.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

The overall length of Lucia 40 catamaran is 11.73 meters with an overall beam of 6.63 meters. It has an approximate unloaded displacement of 9.5 tons. Lucia 40 has a total freshwater capacity of 140 gallons (530 liters) while the total fuel capacity is 79.25 gallons (300 liters).

PRICE RANGE

The price of Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40 ranges from $400,000 to $450,000.

In conclusion, Lucia 40 is an exceedingly comfortable catamaran for a family to go offshore cruising on. The best part about it is not its affordable price but the spacious features it offers in the said price such as its spacious accommodations, large protected cockpit, and ample storage space.

Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40

30

Description

The Lucia 40 , designed by Berret-Raccoupeau Yacht Design, is the entry level catamaran of the current Fountaine Pajot range, an easy to handle catamaran for a couple that represents great value for money. She has many of the features that have been developed on her larger sisters: a tidy multihull package that will suit many budgets.

This boat replaced the very popular Lipari 41 (that competes against another top seller in this size- read our Lagoon 400 review for more information) and, despite her length, still has the feel of a bigger boat at anchor. When you are in the marina, however, you’ll love the manoeuvrability of this yacht.

A Spacious 40 Footer The hulls are well shaped to slip through the water while retaining more than enough width for living space in the hulls. And with fixed keels and that hard top bimini, she’s easy to manage and comfortable to sail on. The Lucia 40 is bigger than the Lipari 41 with a bigger cockpit, more living space and larger windows. But she is still a compact package.

In July 2020, Fountaine Pajot announced that the Lucia would be replaced by the Isla 40. That´s not surprising considering the hot competition in this sector of the market, including the Lagoon 40 and the Nautitech 40 Open.

This catamaran is built with PVC foam-core sandwich with vacuum-laminated outer skins. The deck and saloon area are made using resin transfer moulding (RTM), finished off with gelcoat for a slick look.

  • A good compromise between comfort and speed, especially if you are leaning more towards time at anchor.
  • Fountaine Pajot have evolved this design over the years. This continuous improvement makes for a reliable, well thought out catamaran.
  • All lines come back to the helm- she´s easy to sail short-handed
  • Lots of living space, particularly in the hulls compared to the competition. They have done away with the forepeaks and replaced them with smaller storage spaces- the foreward accommodation is further forward, and the saloon is also further forward than other cats to give you a larger saloon.
  • This is the only 40 footer with the option of 4 bathrooms. If you go for the Maestro version, the shower is huge – probably the biggest in her class.
  • The boom is reasonably low, so access to the mainsail is good.
  • Most of the hatches are flush – the decks are pretty safe, although we would have likes to see more handrails.
  • The ventilation in the saloon could be better. There are no hatches in the roof, even above the galley, although there is a skylight so that you can see your mainsail from the saloon.
  • The flip side to that large saloon, is that the weight is further forward and the nets are pretty small. If you like hanging out on the nets, there is less space to do so on a Lucia 40.
  • Visibility to the aft corners of the boat is possible, but you have to duck and dive a bit. Starboard forward is good, port forward is more problematic.
  • The single helm station also means it is more difficult to trim your sails from the helm. The mainsail on the starboard tack and the genoa on port is easy. The other way round is not so easy.
  • There are no steps to get up from the foredeck to the coachroof. Most of the time you will be heading up there from the helm, but you´ll need to watch your footing getting up to the mainsail from the foredeck.
  • From some angles, that coachroof looks flimsy compared to some of the competition. It doesn´t feel as sturdy under your hand.
  • The standard engines are underpowered at 20HP. We would recommend the upgrade to 30HP to power you through the chop.

catamaran lucia 40 price

Well Organised For Short Handed Crews Both main and genoa are trimmed with the helm set of three winches (one is electric). Trimming visibility is pretty good (easy to see the mainsail on the starboard tack and the headsail on port). This is no different to any offset helm station configuration. 3 steps down from the helm and you are in the aft cockpit, and two steps up the other way leads you to the top deck for access to your sails.

The mainsail is trimmed with a traveler that runs across the entire beam of the coach roof, so there are ample options for tweaking your sails.

Nippy Off the Wind Like most production cruising catamarans, she performs best off the wind, especially if you have ordered the bowsprit and gennaker option for lighter winds. You should see speeds in the low teens in the right conditions.

Going up wind, the Lucia will start to slip sideways under 50 degrees to true. If you need to get upwind fast, you mind need to stick the leeward engine on to point higher, or just drop down to 55 and she sails nicely.

The standard power pack is twin 20HPs but we’d recommend an upgrade to the 30s. There’s not much weight penalty. The engine rooms are spacious with easy access to the machinery all around. The 30hp engines will go full steam ahead at 7.8 knots (3000 rpm), or throttle down to 2400 and you’ll see 6.7 knots in a calm sea. If you just run one engine, you should be able to get 6 knots out of her for the maximum range.

Living Space

Now here is where Fountaine Pajot Excel, and with the Lucia 40 you will sweat every Euro you spend and deliver on comfort. As you step on board up the sugar scoops, you’ll arrive in the spacious aft cockpit with a bench across the transom, and dining area and a day bed that flows into the bulkhead helm station. The helm seats 2 and peeps over the coachroof protected by a soft bimini. All the lines run back to the helm, so whether you are raising your main, reefing or furling your headsail, you can handle it all from this space.

Good Flow And from here you can see back into the galley and the aft cockpit- it’s a well thought out design that flows nicely. You can just about see all 4 corners of the boat from up here if you duck and dive. Forward to starboard is excellent, but forward port is more of a challenge.

Heading into the saloon you have an aft facing galley on the port side with twin sinks. Forward in the saloon, a big sofa wraps around the starboard side with a dining table (room for 6 around the L-Shaped Sofa) or a coffee table, and a nav station on the port side. We’s say the boat could do with more ventilation though. There are no hatches in the roof (even above the galley). Ventilation comes from the 2 forward windows.

She’s an easy boat to get around with flush hatches (except for the forepeaks), and wide decks although we’s have liked to have seen more hand rails and an easier way of clambering up onto the roof from the foredeck. It’s not far to hop up, but if it’s wet and slippy you’d have to watch your step.

Plenty of Space Forward But More Weight The foredeck has two lockers under the sun loungers, one with the water tank and the other for your windlass and chain. You’ll notice that the nets are smaller than many of the competition as they have maxed out the living space on this yacht. That does mean you have more weight forward, however. There are no forepeak cabins on the Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40 because the entire living space has been moved forward for the main cabins, but the spaces in the bows can still be used for stowage or used as space for a washing machine in the Owner’s Version.

The Lucia 40 comes in various configurations like many of her competition: choose the Maestro with an owner’s suite plus 2 double cabins in the port hull with either 2 or 3 bathrooms or the Quatuor, or Charter version with 4 double cabins and either 2 or 4 bathrooms. The Lucia 40 is the only 40 footer on the market with the option of having 4 bathrooms.

Roomy Berths The aft berths are islands and all of the cabins have plenty of storage space. The head is separate from the shower in the Owner’s hull. In the guest hull, you can go for 2 separate bathrooms or a larger single bathroom.

Lucia 40 Polar Diagram

How much is a Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40? What do they cost? This is heavily dependent on the options you go for, but €400-450k gets you in the ball park, a bit more if you max out on the options. The base price is around €300k, then you need to add a pack (choose between Grand Large, Oceanic and Comfort versions. If you start adding the bowsprit, gennaker, solar etc you will nudge up the price. Contact us if you need help with this, in some cases it is better to retro fit stuff.

How did the Lucia 40 evolve? Which boats did she replace? The Lucia 40 replaced the Lipari 41 (another great design, launched 2010) which replaced the Lavezzi 40 (launched 2002) : still popular on the second hand market. Over the years, the designs have become boxier and roomier with a more muscly, angular look.

Is the Lucia 40 still in production? No. Fountaine Pajot have launched a new entry level boat called the Isla 40 which is the next generation model. The Lucia 40 remains popular on the second hand market.

Why Fountaine Pajot? Where does the name come from? Fountaine Pajot was founded in 1976 by Jean-François Fountaine, Yves Pajot, Daniel Givon and Rémi Tristan. Givon and Tristam lost out on the brand name discussions!

If you are in the market for a 12m catamaran (38.4 feet to be precise, despite the 40 branding), then the Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40 should be on your shopping list. It’s a design that has evolved and been perfected over the years.

Jump to FP 40 Lucia Catamarans For Sale

The Lucia 40 has been Designed by Olivier Racoupeau, who understands the needs of a sailor and their companions. These catamarans are a sleek performer under sail keeping within the confines of the Fountaine Pajot demands for a performance cruising catamaran: safe, comfortable, luxurious, stable, fun and affordable.

The Lucia 40 offers dynamic lines and refined interior style, great volumes with plenty of live-abord and relaxation space, and generous natural light.

The design of Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40 offers lots of light in the main salon with a near 360 degree view, opening hatches in the side hulls for aft cabins, recessed mosquito hatches and blinds in all cabins, LED lighting throughout, Apple USB charging sockets in each cabin. Double drawer fridge as standard with optional freezer, draining board, recessed bin, etc.

Fountaine Pajot started producing the Lucia 40 in 2016, marking a new era for sailing catamarans, with a superb interior space to length ratio, offering a 129.39 square feet cockpit, and a 32.3 square feet lounge space.

Compare The Most Popular 40ft Production Catamarans

Stephen and I are always exploring new catamaran models so we can share our insights with you. The information below continues to be valid, but we have a new 40ft catamaran comparison of later models for you to peruse.

40ft catamarans

We created a chart of each catamaran with a standard spec, ex-factory to compare the specifications and price of each boat. These catamarans compare very similarly on base price but there are a few differences.

Nautitech sail

The Bali 4.0 has a unique single cockpit / saloon area, entirely flush and unencumbered by bulkheads, accessible by a folding glass door on electric rams (kind of like a tilting garage door). This opens up the area and make it look like a much bigger boat. This catamaran combines some of the most innovative new characteristics in catamaran design which makes it a very desirable. It is quite a peppy sailboat and easy to maneuver.

Fountaine Pajot 40

The Fountaine Pajot 40 is replacing the Lipari 41 and is basically a smaller version of the successful Fountaine Pajot Helia 44 . It has a lot more volume than the Lipari, has a super stylish interior with island berths for the owner cabins (a much requested feature). It is lightweight but is smaller in volume than most of the the other models. However, because the living space was moved forward in the bows, there is still lots of room. We have not seen a boat yet, so the jury is out on how the boat will perform with these new changes. This model will be unveiled at the Paris boat show in December [2015].

The Leopard 40 ( video ) is heavier than the other models. The bridgedeck clearance is lower than those seen on French or Canadian cruising catamarans. Their philosophy is that a lower bridgedeck reduces the boat’s center of gravity with a wider stern to provide more buoyancy aft. However, a higher bridgedeck clearance translates into less slamming. We have owned cats with lower and higher clearances and a higher bridgedeck clearance definitely has less slamming. Read this article about bridgedeck clearance to make your own informed decision.

Lagoon 400S2

The Lagoon 400S2 has been on the market for a couple of years and is extremely popular. The S2 has decent performance with a lot of interior volume as can be seen here in the specifications. It has the biggest volume of the five 40ft catamaran models. This volume is said (by the competition) to translate into less performance but judging from rallies held around the world, it seems that the Lagoon really holds it’s own. Judging by the feedback from delivery skippers and owners on performance, the 400S2 makes a good performing cruising yacht. The interior is luxurious, accommodations are spacious and the cockpit is a nice size, easy to sail and good for a live aboard couple.

All of these catamarans are very acceptable cruising catamarans for a couple with lots of interior and exterior living space. These cats will do well as live-aboard and well as charter boats. Much of your choice will depend on personal preference. Do you prefer a “luxurious” interior, lots of interior volume and reasonable sailing performance, a more innovative design and optimal performance. Is chartering or cruising your ultimate goal or do you prefer a bit of both? All of these things should be weighed before you make a final choice.

Charter Programs & Tax Programs

The catamarans discussed here are available for both private ownership and charter management. Because catamarans have become so popular in the last ten years, the demand far outweighs the supply. That makes new catamarans more expensive. We are therefor constantly trying to find ways to reduce the cost of ownership for our clients. We take pride in our happy customers

My wife and I want to take a moment to recognize Cynthia Wummer for her amazing work during the purchase of our first boat, a 2018 Lagoon 40 (SV Southern Wild). We were so incredibly pleased with Cynthia and the way she handled this difficult and complex process with ease! She gave us the “white glove” treatment every step of the way. She was extremely proactive in setting up multiple virtual meetings, she expertly and personally handled our survey abroad, and she even guided the sellers throughout. She was a bulldog when we needed her to be during the negotiations (we honestly felt sorry for the sellers!) but she was also eloquent and used a gentle touch when we hit her with many questions. We can’t say enough about this outstanding experience with Cynthia. She reflects outstanding credit upon The Multihull Company and you guys are lucky to have her on your team! Thank you all so much for making our first boat purchase not only a success, but a treasured memory.

Your team delivered on every mark. You’ve got an amazing broker in Mark Wattrus and I’m confident you will have continued success moving forward together. He was available 24/7 whenever I had questions. We had a great initial visit on the boat and his marketing plan and photos were superb

I bought a yacht that I had never seen. I did this because I trusted my broker Andrew Holland. It was not an easy job for Andrew, as I am an experienced boat builder and owner of previous yachts, but work in West Africa. Imagine how hard it was to communicate what I was looking for. Andrew came up with exactly what I wanted. He dealt with time delays, all my questions at odd hours, and was there for the survey. He reported honestly and professionally. After buying the yacht, I arrived at the boat on a Sunday night, after dark, after travelling from West Africa to the Caribbean, and found it was better than expected. He never pulled punches and made me aware of shortfalls. I expected to spend my one month leave working on the boat, but actually spent less than one week, and was able to spend 3 weeks sailing – wonderful bonus.

Thank you Andrew for putting up with all my questions, all my worries and all my crazy out of the time zone concerns – you were totally professional, but also I know that if and when we meet up, it will be like a friend finally meeting. You are always welcome on Aseka.

— Beverly Cory

Outstanding company with professional subject matter experts. If I were to buy or sell cruising sailboat, particularly a catamaran, Andrew would be my go to broker.

I have been sailing since I was a child and attended Massachusetts Maritime Academy. But when my wife and I began the process of purchasing an ocean cruising/racing catamaran, I realized that this is a world unto itself. Obviously, we needed to find someone knowledgeable to help us make an informed decision. More importantly, we needed someone honest and willing to put our interests before his or her own. I was lucky to work with Phil Berman at The Multihull Company. He repeatedly shunned the fast buck, choosing instead to work the long road to connect us with the “perfect boat”. I would be glad to recommend Phil and his company to anyone planning to purchase or sell a performance sailing machine.

— Eric Boutiette

The ideal size for a cruising catamaran

You can easily distinguish the Isla 40 from other sailing catamarans

Yacht design is no easy task, but our teams are experts at it. Reversed bows, deck cladding, stylised hull portholes and a sleek silhouette… you almost forget that this multihull is a 40-footer. But it’s enough to give her the air of a tall ship , ready to set sail on new adventures. The entire Fountaine Pajot ethos is concentrated here in a combination of spaces and volumes offering a superb degree of liveability . Her hull and sail plan provide a real thrill , and the ergonomics of her helm are designed with utmost safety in mind.

One of the fundamental principles behind Fountaine Pajot yachts is that the skipper is not just the person behind the helm: they’re also a parent or the leader of a group of friends. The cockpit has been designed so they are always in visual contact and communication with the rest of the crew.

Innovative, high-tech composite materials constitute most of the structure of our sailing catamarans: hulls, flybridge, decks, bulkheads and more. Fountaine Pajot has perfected a resin injection and infusion technique, an advanced technology that gives our boats all their robustness. Thanks to this expertise, we can make our catamarans considerably lighter while maintaining consistent quality . Injection also makes it possible to meet the most stringent environmental requirements, in line with the commitments of the Fountaine Pajot Group.

Sailing catamarans from 40 to 50 feet are built at the Aigrefeuille headquarters, a few kilometres from La Rochelle. Catamaran yachts from 51 to 80 feet are built in La Rochelle, France, where they benefit from a slipway.

It is essential to define your sailing program: define the size of the crew on board, the level of sailing knowledge, the sailing project and the target sailing area. Every project is different. Whether you want to enjoy a large Owner’s suite, invite many friends and family on board, or telecommute during your voyage, the Fountaine Pajot cruising catamarans can be adapted to suit your needs. The ergonomics of Fountaine Pajot catamarans have been designed to facilitate manoeuvring at the helm, enabling a small crew (2 persons) to manoeuvre the boat easily, both in port and at sea. The unique design of the helm station allows good communication between the aft cockpit and the Fly relaxation areas. Of course, your level of navigation will determine your ability to sail with two or more persons!

Our electric catamarans now feature a large surface area of solar panels, up to 2000 WC, perfectly integrated into the design of the coachroof. Combined with equipment such as wind turbines or hydro-generators, they compensate for the energy consumption generated by on-board use during cruising. Discover the benefits of the Smart Electric solution with 4 real-life cruise scenarios

The Fountaine Pajot range of electric catamarans is expanding, and now includes 3 Smart Electric models. The Astréa 42, Elba 45 and Aura 51 are now available in this version.

With the help of over 70 engineers, Fountaine Pajot has developed an in-house solution, 100% adapted to the use of its catamarans equipped with hybrid electric motors . All on-board production and energy expenditure flows are managed from a single console designed by our teams to offer a simple, designer user experience.
