Evo V8

Evo Yachts’  exclusive new flagship , the 24-metre yacht initially known as the Velar 78 concept and today officially named  Evo V8 , is the first model in the new V line and a highly original proposal that will amaze the market with all its innovative features.

With its  understated and refined design , this extraordinary model has been developed to offer an  unprecedented onboard lifestyle and an  alternative  to anything seen before, marking a clear break from the stylistic imprint of its predecessors in order to offer  a new interpretation of life at sea .

Evo V8 is a boat designed to  excite and amaze , like a Russian matryoshka doll hiding multiple nested surprises. And while the designer and shipyard promise to reveal all these secrets when the yacht is officially presented at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2021, some first glimpses can already be seen in the newly released renders of the vessel.

For  Blu Emme Yachts , the shipyard behind the fortunate Evo Yachts brand, the realisation of this model and a new product line represents a major watershed. With a design penned by  Valerio Rivellini , Evo V8 springs from the desire to find the point of intersection between suggestions from the two worlds of  sailing and motor yachts , with the aim of taking the best of both and  revolutionising the cruising experience .

The project is an invitation to see life on board as  a time for socialising and relaxation , even when cruising under power at high speed. As the designer explains, “motor yacht lovers begin their holiday when they reach their destination, either at anchor off the coast or in port, whereas sailing yacht owners start their holiday right away, as soon as they step on board.  Evo V8 combines the speed of a motor yacht with the comfort and relaxation of sailing ”.

One of the main results of this mixed approach is the fact that there are a remarkable  four helm stations . The first station on the Main Deck forward of the main salon and the second on the Roof Top, fitted with a retractable steering console, are joined by two yacht  wheels  on the port and starboard sides of the Main Deck. A clear reference to the world of sailing, they are an invitation to enjoy cruising in close contact with the water, as well as being very practical when manoeuvring. The space between the two helm wheels is completely free, but the side seats and the couches around them invite socialisation between the driver and their guests, something that isn’t usually possible on a motor yacht.

The particularly innovative layout of Evo V8, which sets it apart from other boats on the market in the same category, is even clearer to see in the beach area, which can be provided with direct access from the master stateroom at the owner’s request.

The beach area is an open space on the water, just 70 cm above the waterline, designed to be able to enjoy seamless contact with nature and an unbroken 180-degree panoramic view thanks to hull sides that open, eliminating all visual barriers and conveying the sensation of being at one with the surrounding environment. Three steps connect the beach area with a low  lounge area  that precedes the master stateroom and has big sliding glass doors, allowing it to perform two functions: an open air patio for daytime use, separated from the interiors and offering  shelter from the wind and sun , and a private living area for the owner at night, when the door to the exterior deck is closed, transforming it into an exclusive open space suite  12 metres  long.

Evo V8 has a  fully customizable layout , with two different stairways leading from the Main Deck directly to the Lower deck, so that the  crew and guest flows can be kept separate . The first unit has three cabins sleeping seven and a cabin for the crew of two. The Lower Deck contains the master stateroom, two guest cabins and a crew cabin. On the Main Deck, the spacious salon with a dining area is surrounded by big windows that can be lowered almost entirely for even more contact with the outside environment and to limit the use of the air conditioning: an option that makes Evo V8 even more like a  24-metre open with hard top .

Evo V8 will be launched in the coming months and handed over to the Italian owner, a loyal customer and a great fan of the Evo Yachts brand.

Evo Yachts V8 review: More than just a razor-sharp, head-turning design?

  • Looking sharp – the Evo V8 with its aft balconies deployed
  • IPS drives give good manoeuvrability

The long aft deck almost doubles in size once the balconies and transformer platform are deployed

The ‘sugar scoop’ shape of the aft platform is another nod to sailboat styling

The crane and tender garage are both hidden below the teak aft deck

  • The owner’s private lounge/beach club
  • The lavish owner’s suite has direct access to the lower saloon and beach club
  • A television unfolds from the ceiling in the owner’s cabin
  • The bed in the forward VIP appears to float above the deck
  • The ensuite bathroom can be left open to the owner’s cabin to maximise space and light but has separate compartments for the shower and toilet
  • The steps to the sun deck drop down from the overhang
  • The more formal aft cockpit

One of the two sailing style helm stations

  • The minimalist sundeck with its telescopic guardrails in the down position
  • The spacious fordeck lounging area
  • The main bridge with its unusual partially concealed wheel

The Italian yard’s biggest and boldest design yet brings sailing inspired ideas to the world of motoryachts. Alan Harper takes a sea trial…

During last year’s test of the Evo R6 Open , at a specially arranged rendezvous in La Spezia, we were briefed on a new, bigger flagship model in development at Blu Emme’s Naples shipyard.

For such a young company to have already worked its way up to a credible-looking 58-footer seemed impressive enough, but one year on, here’s the new 78ft Evo Yachts V8.

In Valerio Rivellini, the shipyard has discovered a talented young designer. With its unfolding cockpit and razor-sharp looks his R6 was a real head-turner, and the new V8 is all of that and more.

The aft bulwarks unfold on each side, as you would expect. What you might not expect is the tender stowage beneath the deck on the port side, and the substantial crane that emerges from under a hatch to starboard, from which a shady parasol can be suspended when it’s not engaged in tender-handling duties.

There is also a versatile Besenzoni hydraulic bathing platform on the stern, to aid boarding either from the quay or from the water, or simply to extend the cockpit aft.

Broad side decks lead forward to a secluded relaxation area on the bow, and a set of overhead steps drops down to provide surprise access to the top of the deckhouse.

This is not a flybridge, as Rivellini points out, “It’s a rooftop,” he laughs – and is definitely for fine days only, even though it does boast a small, low-level electronic helm station.

evo-v8-yacht-review-flybridge

The mahogany-capped guard rails down the sides can be extended upwards to provide a little extra security, but this is still an area which should probably remain out of bounds to small children, and indeed to the drunk uncles who had a cameo role in our review of the R6.

There are surprises inside too. The saloon is an attractive and comfortable space, although with plenty of furniture and two companionways – forward to the crew quarters, aft to the guest cabins – it doesn’t feel especially spacious.

However, the vertical windows all round the saloon not only provide superb visibility, but they also open – so on a sunny afternoon at anchor, a pleasant breeze can stand in for the hum of the generator and the hiss of the aircon.

Evo R6 Open review: A boat that will be noticed wherever it goes

Bluegame BG72 test drive: €3.8m yacht takes beach club concept to extremes

As Rivellini confirms, “With the windows open it’s like having a T-top on a 24-metre boat. I don’t like air-conditioning!” In a particularly neat touch, the aft saloon window is made of smart glass, both for privacy and to turn it into a back-projection cinema screen for viewing from inside.

That forward companionway, incidentally, is perilously close to the helm – one false step on a choppy day and the captain could be down in the galley nursing the wrong kind of sore head.

At €4m, give or take, the Evo V8 is up against some premium competition so we were surprised to find some disappointing levels of finish, from poor joinery on show in the saloon to untidy wiring and careless paintwork hiding under hatches down below.

evo-v8-yacht-review-saloon

The yard assures us these have all been fixed since our test and would have been sorted much earlier had the owner not challenged them to a spring delivery so he could enjoy his yacht over summer prior to returning it for the final finishing touches just a couple of days before our sea trial at the Cannes show.

Morning dip

The layout is fully customisable. Our first example of the Evo V8 had an agreeable VIP cabin in the bows, a small twin, and a rather magnificent midships owner’s suite with its own aft-facing lounge.

This feature might feel familiar to anyone who has been impressed by Bluegame’s innovative BGX models, and Rivellini graciously acknowledges the inspiration.

evo yachts v8

“In the mornings I like to leap into the water straight from bed,” he says. The owner of the Evo V8 only has to walk through his low-level private lounge to reach the aft deck, and from there it’s but a hop, step and a jump into the sea. Good ideas are there for the taking. With great ideas, it’s pretty much compulsory.

Whether all of Rivellini’s own ideas will find their way into rival yachts remains to be seen. The Evo Yachts V8 is a boat with four places to steer from, three of which have large steering wheels.

Wing helm stations with joysticks are of course very useful when mooring stern-to, but the wing stations on the Evo Yachts V8 are equipped with huge sailboat-style carbon wheels so you can helm the boat under way too.

evo yachts v8

Along with the curved lower surface of the aft platform, reminiscent of a sailboat’s sugar-scoop stern, these are perhaps the most visible manifestations of the shipyard’s assertion that the Evo V8 represents “a cruising concept at the point of intersection between the worlds of sailing and motor yachts”.

Another curiosity is the panel that conceals all but the upper arc of the main helm wheel. It looks rather odd but I wasn’t able to try it for myself as they wouldn’t let me drive the boat.

At nearly 78ft overall and displacing more than 60 tonnes in cruising trim, the Evo V8 is perhaps not as high-powered as its name suggests.

evo yachts v8

On our balmy test day its top speed of 21 knots was achieved with the Humphree fins and interceptors in automatic mode, chatting away to the IPS drives and smoothing the way effectively.

The hull beneath the waterline is a competent moderate V-bottom. It turned willingly enough and there didn’t appear to be any handling issues, although the ride through head seas – we had to seek out obliging wakes from other boats – was a little firmer than expected, perhaps due to the broad chines.

At the optimum cruising speed of 15 knots and 1,900rpm, however, the hull ironed everything out, and with the engines right aft, noise levels in the saloon were minimal.

By the end of our sea trial on the V8 we were left with much the same impressions as we took from the Evo R6 – an intriguing concept, where some great ideas compete for attention with a few that perhaps need a little more refining. Of course in this crowded market it’s good to stand out, as one buyer’s weird might be another buyer’s wonderful. Blu Emme is clearly unafraid of asking such questions, and in a style-conscious world, it manifestly understands the importance of bold design. As ever, the market will be the ultimate arbiter of commercial success and the yard’s ability to customise means changes can easily be accommodated. In the meantime we applaud the yard’s bravery in backing its young designer’s vision and being prepared to take a risk.

Watch: Evo Yachts' new V8 flagship underway

The 24m flagship of Evo Yachts , the V8, has been revealed underway in a brand new video released by the Neapolitan shipyard. It comes after the yacht received its world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September 2021.

The first yacht in the builder's V Line, the V8 is designed by Valerio Rivellini and features "clean lines and a refined design", according to the builder.

Formerly named Velar 78 and based on a concept previously launched by Rivellini , the V8 was originally developed as a 21.5 metre yacht before reaching its final form.

The interiors of the yacht are fully customisable, but the first unit features a large lounge and dining area, accommodation for six guests and four helm stations.

The shipyard previously described the yacht as having a design that “combines the strengths of both motor and sailing yachts”. This is seen in the large helm that has been inspired by those found on sailing yachts.

Designer Valerio Rivellini explained: “Usually motor yacht lovers begin their holiday when they reach their destination, either at anchor off the coast or in port, whereas sailing yacht enthusiasts start their holiday right away, as soon as they step on board.

"Evo V8 combines the speed of a motor yacht with the comfort and relaxation of sailing”.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

evo yachts v8

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

evo yachts v8

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

evo yachts v8

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

evo yachts v8

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

evo yachts v8

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

evo yachts v8

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

evo yachts v8

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Early in 2015 the Drzewiecki Design studio released X-Plane's first Russian scenery in UUEE Sheremetyevo Airport XP. Personally I was very excited, in that of what X-Plane can do in allowing you to explore new frontiers, new countries, new areas. So a trip to Russia was going into another brand new frontier with finally with a quality payware scenery as a destination.

If any scenery shows the explosion of detail in X-Plane over the last five years it is UUEE - Sheremetyevo. That first review visit was really to an isolated scenery in a barren wilderness in more like Siberia than Moscow... read the full original review here to see huge differences between the original and current visual detail of UUEE Sheremetyevo Airport.

Airport Review : UUEE Sheremetyevo Airport XP by Drzewiecki Design

But remember that at the time it was pretty good...

UUEE Sheremetyevo Airport XP v2 So here is the upgrade (finally) to that release in the v2 X-Plane11 version of Sheremetyevo. The previous proclamation is in relation to the changes around this original scenery. Drzewiecki Design has been on a sort of mission statement to recreate Moscow in it's entirety. Their release of Moscow XP did a huge service in recreating a city out of nothing...   Scenery Review : Moscow City XP by Drzewiecki Design and another brilliant addition was JustSim's excellent UUWW - Moscow Vnukovo v1.2 which was constructed to fit within the same framework as DD's Moscow XP scenery, the funny thing was the only airport scenery that was now the odd one out was actually the older UUEE Sheremetyevo?

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_Head 1.jpg

The approach now to Sheremetyevo makes you shake your head, "oh wow" as this is so, so different from the original...

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_Head 5.jpg

If you have the Moscow XP scenery (highly recommended here) then the installer will fit in the new UUEE to merge perfectly with the city scenery... if you don't have it there is an option to blend into the standard default textures, but why not have the full Russian monty, it is excellent, but there is also a lot of objects now running in your system, so you will need at least a 8K graphic card to run the full Moscow layout.

Drzewiecki Design uses a .exe installer to install your Sheremetyevo, for Mac/Linux there is a manual .zip option, but the manual version is complicated in that you have to place certain files for certain options in there manually. And there are a lot of options...   there are three options on the style of the "Borders" or the way you want the scenery to fit into your current layout (i.e. with Moscow XP or not), second set of options that cover Static aircraft and Ground Photoreal textures, there is another option to use the volmetric 3d grass (recommended) and if you want the manual to appear when the install is done. All options with the installer can be changed by just running the installer again and selecting your new options, it works very well in changing around options quickly...

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_Install 2.jpg

.... the installer will also check if you have the SAM (Scenery Animation Manager) installed, which is required by the scenery, it did pick up I was a version out of date (I was away traveling) so I was impressed by that. Finally it will install the scenery into your custom scenery folder (on the fly as noted it asked me if I wanted it to install the correct textures for use with Moscow XP, again impressive). So you can see how hard it would be to set up manually, however there is full instructions in the manual for Mac/Linux users (note I am using the static off (WT3) and photoreal/grass on).

First new view of UUEE - Sheremetyevo shows a major airport change in a new runway 06L - 24R (there are a set of charts provided with the scenery)

UUEE_CHARTS.jpg

06L -24R is set a fair way from the terminal zones, I mean really far away from the southern Terminal D, E & F complexes to the south so expect a long taxi...

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_06L_24R 1.jpg

...    detail along side including a runway tower complex is excellent, in fact all detail around the airport is now highly elevated by a lot of local objects.

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_06L_24R 4.jpg

Visually the surrounding areas around the airport are very realistic, note the Moscow City well into the background as the objects coverage over the whole area to the Moscow city centre, so the question has to asked is that if you have the full set of Moscow XP, UUWW Vnukovo and this scenery is then the question is of do you have the most detailed complete city layout in X-Plane? I personally now think so.

It is really very hard to imagine the basis of this version is still many the older objects, and yet that is the case but most have had attention, as this is now a far more comprehensive and dynamic scenery than before...

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_UUEE 1.jpg

...  to highlight this aspect are the new PBR (Physical Based Render) reflective runways, and in the right light they are excellent, add less light and wet conditions and they go mindblowing.

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_UUEE 4.jpg

South Sheremetyevo

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_UUEE 17.jpg

The original iconic Sheremetyevo-2 Terminal now Terminal F looks now even better with PBR and reflective glass, although I see a few areas of marching ants on the windows in some lighting conditions.

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_UUEE 7.jpg

The adjoining Terminal E has also had the reflective glass treatment, but also internal detail added, as usual it is quite basic, but it all looks good of where it counts in the external view. The internal detail is also on the futuristic Terminal D, this futuristic terminal looks so much better here, it was certainly well modeled originally, but the average surroundings didn't give it the attention it deserved.

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_UUEE 13.jpg

Like the new runway, new infrastructure landside has also been included, including new hotels and administration buildings, so the scenery is now completely up to date in it's current form. The Park inn hotel has been remodeled, and is far better and not as gaudy as before and the Holiday Inn Express is all new and both are excellent.

A big feature now included is the SAM (Scenery Animation Manager) plugin for VGDS gate docking and remote parking and every airbridge is now active, that is EVERY airbridge at SVO.

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_SAM 1.jpg

Approaching Terminal F is now a real occasion if an historic one as this terminal is steeped in history, to dock at the red airbridge just completes the Russian arrival.

North Sheremetyevo

If any area of Sheremetyevo that has had the most changes it is on the older north side.

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_UUEE 18.jpg

Gone is the old iconic "Sheremetyevo-1" or the original first terminal built at Sheremetyevo in 1964 with it's unusual spaceship-like design, and it has been replaced with two new terminals in B and C. They have sort of done a modern glassed in replica design of the older terminal as part of terminal B, but in reality it is not the same as the iconic design.

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_UUEE 19.jpg

The advantages however are that you get a lot more active gates to choose from and as you can't stop progress and passenger demand. It keeps Sheremetyevo as an active modern airport as well, and not sinking away into a relic of the past. But the differences here in facilities compared to only five years ago is quite comprehensive.

Nightlighting

The lighting of UUEE has had a full overhaul and "thank god for that".

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_UUEE lighting 1.jpg

Most of the original terminal night textures were just simply really "plain awful" and to the point I hit the Photoshop app to make them at least more realistic, mostly all the glaringly bad textures have banished to be replaced with the see-through glass lighting, but there are a few areas they still brightly protrude from.

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_UUEE lighting 3.jpg

The worst offenders were the Terminal's D and E and thankfully both have had serious attention, D is nice now, and E is lovely on the landside arrival side. The hotels at night look excellent as well and very realistic...

Terminal F night texures are the same, but the new ramp lighting sorts of dilutes the age. But a bit more attention to detail here to make it blend in better would have helped.

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_UUEE lighting 7 LG.jpg

As 80% of the north Sheremetyevo is new then so is the lighting...

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_UUEE lighting 8.jpg

It looks great and very modern, and the ramps are well lit. The highlight is the control tower lighting which is very effective by the side of the older tower building. Control Tower view however is not set, but ground focused...  overall the lighting here at SVO is very good.

WT 3 : Any old ground routes don't work with the new runway layout, so they have to thrown away. The new generation is not bad and works but needs refinements in a few areas to make it perfect, but overall WT2 works very well and some approach views are excellent.

A note that the older waypoint issues have thankfully gone as well, having current or newer Navigraph data will fix all the old misalignment issues.

The first really good payware scenery for Moscow has had a complete refurbish. Originally the scenery was a speck in an area of X-Plane blandness, but not anymore. Now you have the extensive Moscow XP and JustSim's UUWW - Moscow Vnukovo to compliment this highly updated UUEE - Sheremetyevo and what a grand plan it all is now.

There has been a lot of changes at Sheremetyevo in the last few years, with a new runway 06L -24R  and most of north Sheremetyevo being totally rebuilt with two new terminals, and all the changes and a lot more of the new infrastructure is all in this scenery, so UUEE is totally up to date with the current conditions with this upgraded scenery. SAM animated airbridge plugin and dynamic PBR textures with 3d volumetric grass gives the scenery a huge dynamic lift as well as has most of the lighting also being thankfully redone. Full ground vehicle and radar animations are well done as well so this is now the full complete and highly optioned package of SVO.

Moscow as a destination city is one of the best served in X-Plane if you are willing to invest in all of the three principal sceneries of Drzewiecki Design's Moscow XP, JustSim's Moscow Vnukovo and now this totally updated Drzewiecki Design UUEE - Sheremetyevo, and the totally outstanding vista is married by some of the most sensational airport scenery with this Sheremetyevo now also a highly developed and usable scenery...  Only earlier that Sheremetyevo suddenly felt very dated, but now fits in beautifully with the the whole context of the scenery, yes you will need a bit of computer power to run the extreme amount of objects created here so a 8K Graphic Card is a must, other wise it is perfection...  a must have (all of it).
