Lady Michelle Yacht: Behind The Scenes

The Lady Michelle yacht became famous on the show Below Deck: Mediterranean season 6 where it was featured prominently. It’s worth noting that the Lady Michelle has since been renamed and is actually called the Next Chapter now. However, most people still know her as the Lady Michelle because of her time on the TV show. 

The yacht features naval architecture and was built by Italian yacht maker Benetti with design work done by Stefano Natucci and delivered back in 2003. She features a steel hull over an aluminum superstructure. It was refitted in 2022 and that was when the name was changed as well. 

Who Owns The Lady Michelle Yacht?

 In 2003 the Lady Michelle was purchased by entrepreneur Mike Fernandez.  He maintained ownership of the yacht even during its time on the show Below Deck. However, in 2022 the yacht was sold to a company called 1 Ocean Yachts. They are a yacht brokerage firm that also does yacht charter management and the Lady Michelle was renamed to the Next Chapter and added to their charter fleet.

How Big is the Lady Michelle/Next Chapter Yacht?

The Lady Michelle is by no means the biggest yacht in the world but it’s still a good sized vessel at 180.5 feet in length. According to the yacht specifications she features a 34 foot beam and her gross tonnage is 909 GT.

How Much Did the Lady Michelle Yacht Cost?

It’s believed that when the Lady Michelle sold in 2022 and was renamed the Next Chapter she sold for $18,950,000. That was the last published asking price for the yacht . Some sources claim that her initial price in 2003 was about $25 million. The annual cost to keep the yacht running is around $2 million. 

Can You Charter the Lady Michelle Yacht?

The Next Chapter/Lady Michelle is available for charter. The current price for a Lady Michelle yacht charter is about $325,000 per week. This number can change based on time of year and demand, however. Because the yacht is one of the more well known in the world thanks to its appearance on the show, it does tend to be popular.

How Fast is the Lady Michelle Yacht and What Engines Does She Have?

The Next Chapter uses a set of Caterpillar 3512 Diesel engines. Her cruising speed is about 14 knots with a top speed of 16 knots. She has a range of about 3,000 nautical miles at cruising speed.

What’s the Interior of the Motor Yacht Lady Michelle Like?

While the yacht was featured on Below Deck as we said and there was plenty of time for people to get a look at the interior and exterior, not all of that is applicable anymore. The refit of 2022 and subsequent sale to make it a charter yacht included a lot of changes to the overall look of the yacht. So if you think you know the Lady Michelle you may not, and the fact it’s called the Next Chapter now is symbolic of that. But, fortunately, the fact it is a charter now means the company wants you to know all of the features and amenities it has to offer, so we have a pretty good idea of the interior and how everything looks. 

As we said before, the interior and exterior were managed by Italian designer Stefano Natucci. As a charter vessel she has six cabins that can offer room for up to 12 guests. This includes 1 Master suite, 1 VIP cabin, 2 Double cabins, and 2 Twin cabins. There are also 14 crew on board to help make everyone’s time more enjoyable. 

The owner’s suite is also a split level to offer more space and views of the ocean. It features his and hers ensuite washroom facilities and offers a panoramic view of the ocean from the observation lounge. There’s also a private study 

When it comes to sleeping, guests enjoy a range of accommodations from the most luxurious with a king sized bed in the Master suite, to 3 queen sized in the VIP and doubles and then 4 singles and 1 pullman for those who are more inclined to rough it a little on a luxury yacht.

The interior was given traditional styling. This includes a lot of glossy wood finishes for a clean, shiny appearance. The color scheme is old school nautical blue and white for all the soft finishes like upholstery and pillows and so on. This, of course, matches the exterior paint on the hull.

Being a charter, the company in charge has packed the Next Chapter to the brim with all kinds of great features. Let’s take a look at some of the standouts.

Features and Amenities

Like any good luxury yacht, the Next Chapter has a wide range of activities, comforts and indulgences available for those who charter her. She also features a range of water toys that is a little more extensive than you may find on similar yachts. These include:

• A full gym with the latest equipment that is enclosed on the sundeck
• Deck Jacuzzi
• An open air cinema on deck for movie nights
• A saloon for socializing and enjoying drinks
• An elevator to move between the yacht’s four decks
• Two SeaDoo Spark Trixx WaveRunners
• The deck has an al fresco dining area
• Two seabobs
• Two Kayaks, 
• Fishing equipment
• Snorkeling gear
• Waterslides
• Two stand-up paddle boards
• Three tenders including a 45 foot Yamaha Seahunter Tournament Tender
• There’s an exterior bar on deck as well as a BBQ for drinks and entertaining under the sun or stars
• A swim platform

What Happened with the Lady Michelle Yacht Drug Bust? 

Being on the show Below Deck was not the Lady Michelle’s only brush with fame. Back in 2017 a boat of the same name also made international headlines after it was involved in a sizable drug deal. The boat, flagged as a fishing vessel , was discovered off the coast of South America with a remarkable 4.2 tonnes of cocaine on board. The street value at the time was pegged at about $125 million. 

While this boat was seized by both the US and the National Crime Agency, it was an unfortunate mix up with names that got the Lady Michelle yacht involved. This may also be part of the reason the newest owners changed the name, so as to distance themselves from what was, at the time, the largest drug seizure since 1999. You can imagine people who own the boat not wanting anyone to Google a potential charter and discover it was used as a boat to smuggle drugs, even though it was just a case of mistaken identity because they had the same name.

The Lady Michelle that had possession of the drugs was a 70 foot fishing vessel based out of St. Vincent and Grenadines. 

The Bottom Line

The Lady Michelle was built in the year 2003 for entrepreneur and philanthropist Mike Fernandez. It was featured on the sixth season of the show Below Deck: Mediterranean which gave the vessel some international attention. However, after it was sold in 2022 for about $18, 950,000 the vessel was retrofitted and also renamed the Next Chapter.

The Next Chapter is just about 180 feet in length and has a top speed of 16 knots. It’s available for charter at a cost of around $325,000 per week and has accommodations for a total of 12 guests. It features a number of luxury amenities and a lot of toys for those on board.

The New Below Deck Mediterranean Yacht Is One Of The Most Expensive Yet

It sleeps 13 guests in six cabins and contains a beach club, sun deck, gym, and jacuzzi.

Below Deck Mediterranean is heading back to familiar waters. After sailing off the coast of Croatia in Season 2, the show is returning to the country for Season 6. Croatia was also recently featured in the second season of Below Deck Sailing Yacht , which is why viewers might recognize the yacht now being used in Mediterranean Season 6, the Lady Michelle.

At the end of Below Deck Sailing Yacht’ s most recent season, the crew had to make a last-minute change to their charter when their original guests tested positive for COVID-19. Since the Lady Michelle was already in the area, its crew became the Sailing Yacht ’s new charter guests. There was a lot of panic from the Sailing Yacht crew about what it was going to be like to work for fellow yachties, though the Lady Michelle crew at the time isn’t the same one on Below Deck Med Season 6.

Nevertheless, the new crew will be taking its guests out on one of the show’s most expensive yachts ever. According to the Burgess Yachts chartering site, chartering the Lady Michelle costs $275,000 per week during the summer and up to $310,000 per week during the peak winter season.

By comparison, the ships used in the first two Mediterranean seasons (including the Sirocco that sailed Croatia last time) cost around $167,000 and $213,000 per week, respectively, while last season’s impressive Wellington ship reportedly cost around $243,000 per week .

There’s a reason the Lady Michelle is so pricey, though. According to The International Yacht Company, the massive ship can sleep 13 guests in six cabins and contains a beach club, sun deck, gym, and jacuzzi. It also comes with variety of water toys like wave runners, waterskis, and a waterslide, per Burgess. If someone wanted to buy the whole ship and sail it all year round, IYC has it listed for $19.5 million. And you might need to buy the ship to get it back to Croatia, because that’s not its usual charter route.

On Below Deck , the ship sailed up to scenic Šibenik in Croatia , but the Lady Michelle typically isn’t a Mediterranean vessel. According to Burgess Yachts, it sails the Caribbean and Bahamas in the summer and just the Bahamas in the winter. So don’t get too attached to the Croatian setting if you’re planning to charter Lady Michelle with all of your spare hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Cue the drama, drunken shenanigans, stressful dinner services and hilarious charter guests, Below Deck Mediterranean is back for a sixth season in 2021.

It’s ‘all aboard’ the Lady Michelle as Captain Sandy Yawn returns with her chief stew Katie Flood. Malia White, Mathew Shea, Lexi Wilson, Courtney Veale, David Pascoe, Lloyd Spencer and Mzi “Zee” Dempers are all team members on the superyatch, too.

It’s no mean feat leading a crew onboard a superyacht around the Adriatic Sea but Captain Sandy is up for the challenge and she’s a big fan of the Lady Michelle as per E! Online .

Introducing the Lady Michelle!

Below Deck Mediterranean season 6 kicks off from June 28th 2021 on Bravo.

The show brings with it returning cast members as well as an impressive superyacht called the Lady Michelle.

The yacht is 180ft long and boasts six cabins, accommodating 12 guests and a crew of 14!

How much is the Lady Michelle worth?

The Lady Michelle was listed for sale in March 2021 as per Boat International .

It was listed by “Rob Newton at IYC with Jose Arana Jr at 1 Ocean Yachts” for $19,500,000.

The boat had a $2m refurb back in 2015 and another in 2017. Describing the yacht, Boat International elaborated on its features which include: “ Twin 1,850hp Caterpillar engines give a cruising speed of 14 knots with a range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots and she is fitted with zero speed stabilisers .”

To spend a week on the Lady Michelle, it costs £275,000 as per Burgess Yachts .

Below Deck: Lady Michelle yacht layout explored

Some of the superyachts seen on Bravo’s Below Deck are equivalent of luxury mansions.

The Lady Michelle offers al fresco living and there’s enough spacious interior for 14 people to come on board.

The superyacht is made up of a main dining area, a sun deck complete with swimming pool, a top deck, a stunning master suite, a split-level owner’s suite on the main deck, his and hers bathrooms, a gym, a lounge, a study and a saloon. Plus, as per Boat International , the Lady Michelle comes with a load of toys including “ a pair of jet skis, fishing, waterskiing and wakeboarding gear, towable toys, kayaks, paddleboards… a waterslide and more. “

Besides the stunning layout and interior of the yacht, speaking to E! , Captain Sandy said she’s more in love with how the boat drives: “ For me, how it responds in the sea,” she explained. “You know, the layout was great, it’s for charter…The volume for the size was incredible. “

They said: "The real captain of the vessel is Captain Tom Versteeg. He’s Dutch.

"The real first officer is Brad Armstong & Matt Betts is the real second officer.

"Since we know that Below Deck & BDM “demote” the real captain to First Officer during filming I wonder what happens with the real first & second officers. Do they also remain on?

"There are normally 14 crew members including a chef & a Sous chef. Normally there are four stews: Chief stew, 2nd Stew, & two additional stews where the 4th is also a personal trainer as there’s a dedicated gym on board.

"It’ll be interesting to see how BDM will play out this year. It appears that normally there’s only a bosun & two deckhands according to that crew info sheet on the Lady Michelle but BD/BDM they cast what they need for drama."

The information has also been found on a crew list from 2020.

Captain Sandy revealed the Lady Michelle was her "favourite boat ever", according to E! News.

She said: "It was like so solid, I didn't even know we were at sea. For me, how it responds in the sea.

"You know, the layout was great, it's for charter... the volume for the size was incredible."

Lady Michelle usually tours the Caribbean and Bahamas, but the captain took to the seas of Croatia in season six.

She added: "It was absolutely beautiful. The people were great."

Many of the yachts in the Below Deck franchise are given new names especially for the show.

For example Honor, in Below Deck season one, is actually called Lumiere and Ohana from season two was renamed Rhino.

Eros from season three's real name is Mustang Sally, with Valor's real name being BG, named after owner Bobby Genovese.

My Seanna from season six was the only boat to keep its name for the series.

Interview with the Superyacht Captain of M/Y Lady M

It is good to be back out and about this year, and what a tremendous success the 2021 Monaco Yacht Show has been so far. We have caught up with old friends and met new ones, and this year with great thanks to West Nautical , we landed an interview with Russ Strang, the Superyacht Captain of M/Y Lady M .

In this interview, we talk about the successful Med season he and his crew have had this year and the difficulties COVID-19 has thrown at them. We find out his favourite destination and even touch on what he thinks about the influx of new crew into the industry because of the Below Deck craze.

Monaco marks the Med season coming to a close. Can you tell us how this year’s season has been for Lady M?

Has it been a busy season.

It has been a very successful season this year. We covered a lot of distance and visited plenty of new countries, which has been a nice change with the owner. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage any charters this year as the owners wanted to enjoy the yacht themselves. without strangers coming on board between visits.  It has been a good season. We visited plenty of areas, some of which the crew hadn’t been to before.

Can you tell us where you have explored?

We got to Turkey, Greece, Albania, Croatia, Sicily and up the coast of Italy, so we have mixed things up this year, which has been a good change.

How does the 2021 summer compare with 2020?

2020 was much more restricted. We couldn’t have any of the owner’s friends or distant family onboard because of COVID-19, so the trips were a little quieter with just direct family. It was nice to have the larger groups and plenty of the owner’s friend’s back this year.

What was the stand out destination this year for you?

I have always been a fan of Croatia just because of the variety on offer. There and the short distances between them. I was also very impressed with Turkey. I haven’t spent a great deal of time there, so it was nice to see what it offered and even the beauty of the place.

How have you managed crew travel/holidays this year with the different travel restrictions around the world?

It was, of course, logistically challenging, but with a bit of planning, anything is possible. All crew travel with their Seaman’s book and on a Seafarers ticket, which will get you out of/into most quarantines around the world. Most of the crew are now vaccinated or partially vaccinated, so travel has been a little easier.

Most of the crew are Europe based, so travel has been a little easier for them. We have had a couple of South African crew that have faced a few challenges but again, with a bit of forward planning and picking the correct flight path, we got them back on board with little issue.

Have there been any logistical challenges with moving the vessel around the Med?

It has been a lot more straightforward than I thought it would be, definitely a lot easier than last year. This is down to the help of the local agents, a bit of forethought and plenty of planning. It hasn’t affected any of our plans, to be honest.

What is Lady M’s Plan for the winter?

We have a winter birth in San Remo, which we will head straight over to after the Yacht Show. We will spend the winter maintaining and doing any necessary repairs and improvements on the yacht and, of course, giving the crew some well-deserved Rest to prepare for the next Med Season.

Have you received any charter bookings for the 2022 season yet?

There have been interested parties but nothing set in stone yet. I would be surprised if we had a repeat of this year. I am expecting a few to come through soon.

What does the perfect 7-day charter consist of?

We hate to say it, but the weather plays a big part, not too hot or cold; no rain and little wind is ideal for us.

For the perfect charter, the stars would all align, and you would have great weather, you’d have a positive and motivated crew, friendly guests, great food and a great itinerary. Of course, any good charter needs to be action-packed with plenty of activities, excellent restaurants, and fantastic meals on board.

Any stand out areas of the Med for that perfect 7-day charter?

Again, I would have to say Croatia.  There is such a variety on offer there. We usually operate out of Split; it’s a great location to base yourselves. There are beautiful waterfalls within easy reach. Hvar, the party capital, is close by and has plenty of excellent restaurants on offer and historical Dubrovnik is only a short trip away. Croatia offers such a variety in such a small space. It is perfect for a guest trip.

We have been speaking with crew training facilities that have experienced a high influx of junior crew influenced into the industry by shows like Below Deck . Does this raise any concerns for you as a captain?

(Giggles) I am actually pleased you asked this question because it really has become quite a driver for people joining the industry.  It is, of course, a concern for me as it gives the junior crew a preconceived idea and specific expectations of the superyacht industry. If they are influenced into the industry by Below Deck or because of what they have seen on social media, it is essentially setting them up for failure.  They often think it is all party, party and beautiful destinations and they quickly realise it’s a lot of hard work.

There is an element of having a good time in yachting, but it is probably 95% hard work that shows like Below Deck do not accurately demonstrate.

Would you say that they often come in not understanding what an owner or charter trip is like?

Yes, I guess so. From the very little I have seen of Below Deck, the crew often drank champagne with the guests in the jacuzzi. This is just so far removed from the truth of super yachting.

Last year the Dutch firm Sinot Yacht unveiled Aqua, the world’s first hydrogen-powered superyacht. Where do you see the future of the superyacht industry in terms of sustainability? And is there anything you do onboard to reduce Lady M’s environmental impact?

It’s great to see that the industry is moving in this direction. With so many superyachts around now, it is good to see people doing things about their environmental impact on the world. I think Hydrogen and battery-powered yachts will be a lot more common in the future.

Of course, we aren’t working miracles with what we are doing on board, but every little helps. Recently, we installed a water filtration system, so we all drinking filtered water rather than using plastic bottles. We also make an immense effort to recycle and dispose of our waste correctly where we can. We all have to do our bit even if it is only small.

  What does Lady M do to stand out in the charter market?

Nothing special really, there are no gimics. She is just a good solid yacht set up perfectly for charter guests. The crew go along for the guests. For a yacht charter, it reasonably priced us for what we have on offer. We have Michelin trained chefs and a highly experienced crew with solid hospitality and yachting backgrounds. We are very excited to be welcoming back charter guests soon.

In an exclusive chat with E! News, Below Deck Mediterranean 's Captain Sandy Yawn dished all about her season six yacht, named Lady Michelle. Fans of the Below Deck franchise got a taste of the luxury vessel during season two of Below Deck Sailing Yacht . Yet, in the new season of Below Deck Med , viewers will get a front row seat to what the yacht has to offer.

And, from what Captain Sandy told us, Lady Michelle is one impressive yacht. "My favorite boat ever," she shared. "It was like so solid, I didn't even know we were at sea."

While the layout of Lady Michelle is certainly breathtaking, boasting six guest cabins and over 180 feet in length, the captain revealed that she loved the way it handles. "For me, how it responds in the sea," she explained. "You know, the layout was great, it's for charter...The volume for the size was incredible."

This is certainly high praise coming from Captain Sandy, who has previously captained mega-yachts Sirocco, Talisman Maiton and The Wellington. However, after learning of Lady Michelle's $310,000 winter rate/per week, we can't say we're shocked that the yacht is so spectacular.

Although Lady Michelle typically sails the Caribbean and Bahamas, Captain Sandy led her through the waters of Croatia this season. On returning to the European country's coast, she relayed, "It was absolutely beautiful. The people were great. You know, remember, it was very quiet 'cause of what was going on around the world."

Per the captain, she was "just grateful" that they "got to go there."

Speaking of the coronavirus pandemic, Captain Sandy assured us that season six will be just as entertaining and fabulous as its predecessors. "We made it incredible, right?" she said. "So, that's the beauty of being on a boat is you can quarantine off-shore and have this epic time and see these beautiful places while the rest of the world is shut down."

The captain highlighted how the charter business also helped the economy. She concluded, "At the same time, you're employing people, you're provisioning, you're buying goods. You know, so you're helping the community at the same time."

Private Chef Reveals Influencer's Morning Menu on $15k-a-Night Superyacht

Wouldn't we all love to wake up to the smell of breakfast waiting for us on the deck of a luxury boat sailing through the Caribbean? A private chef has revealed everything she cooks in the morning for her client on a yacht in the Bahamas in a clip that has gone viral on social media.

In the video , shared on TikTok on Wednesday under the username lilydavison6, the poster, Lily Davison, shares a glimpse of her client's lavish lifestyle, laying out all the dishes she cooks before 9 a.m. for the Instagram influencer and their family onboard the Sailing Location catamaran, for which prices start at $15,000 per night.

She starts with some bacon and a sliced fruit platter, followed by a batch of fresh blueberry pancakes. She then makes French toast with a specific type of coconut bread bought on the island that she cooks in the plancha grill on deck.

She told Newsweek : "It's hard work, long days and long hours but so worth it as I'm cooking in paradise which is my dream job."

Davison, who has been a private chef on a yacht for two years, says she's always loved cooking, and luckily for her, she had chefs in the family who helped her nurture her passion since she was a little girl.

"I got into the industry as I got a job vlogging on super yachts and whilst I was there, they asked me If I'd like to test run as a hostess on a yacht. I did the test run as a hostess but I ended up cooking every single meal and the guests said 'we didn't know we had a chef onboard'. That sparked my interest and decided to apply as a chef. I then got a job as a chef on my first boat but I didn't stay long as I got a call from Below Deck saying they were looking for a stew and asked if I was free.

"So I went on Below Deck and afterwards I got this job (where I am now on a catamaran in the Bahamas) and have been here for a year and half. And where I met my boyfriend Nik who is the captain."

Davidson recently appeared on Below Deck Mediterranean Season 8, a reality TV show that follows the life of a group of crew members working on a superyacht during charter season.

"Below deck is definitely real but it's a bit more dramatic compared to the real life of yachting due to the guests being way more demanding than in real life," she said about the show.

As if getting to do your dream job in a dream location wasn't enough, being a private chef on a yacht also allows for plenty of time to enjoy the place.

"We get lots of time in-between charters," she added. "We just had a three-week break in January, but we now are pretty full-on with back to back charters."

A caption shared along with the viral post says: "Yes this was all before 9 am."

As much as we'd all love a skilled private chef cooking our every meal, most of us have have to cook our own food if we want to eat.

According to data shared by Statista, over 34 percent of Americans cook more than five times a week, while another 37 percent cook about three to five times a week, and only 8 percent cook less than once.

The video quickly went viral on social media, getting viewers from across TikTok. It has so far received over 1.2 million views and 52,000 likes on the platform.

One user, allieD, commented: "Do you get off time where you can swim or lay on the deck without them judging you and making you feel like you should be working?"

And Nikki Morris said: "Aaahhh I'm so happy I seen this love you Lily loved you on below the deck so happy for you beautiful."

'Below Deck' cast: Meet the full Season 11 crew after Capt. Lee Rosbach's departure

A peek into the luxury super yacht scene and the daily lives of the crew who work and live on them returns this February in Season 11 of "Below Deck."

Following Captain Lee Rosbach's departure from the show after 10 seasons, a new captain is running the yacht: Captain Kerry Titheradge , who viewers may have seen before on "Below Deck Adventure." This season, the crew is working on the M/Y St. David, a luxury yacht in the Caribbean island nation of Grenada.

The Bravo reality show has been around since 2013 and has inspired multiple spinoffs since it aired, including "Below Deck Adventure," "Below Deck Sailing Yacht" and "Below Deck Mediterranean."

Below deck: barbie’s backstory about selling finance causes massive confusion.

Barbie Pascual's explanation of her previous finance job on the show has left many Below Deck viewers confused, just like charter guests on the yacht.

Barbie Pascual confuses Below Deck viewers with wild statements about her past work life. The 29-year-old Argentinian is one of the most notorious crew members on Captain Kerry Titheradge’s yacht . She has become famous for her feud with her boss, Fraser Olender, and her demeaning behavior toward the inexperienced Stew, Cat Baugh . Recently, Barbie made a strange remark about her previous job on the show. She talked to the charter guests and boldly claimed she sold finance on Wall Street in the Trump building. Even the drunk guests were baffled after hearing her, as proven by their blank faces.

Recently, a Redditor, realitytvdiet , shared a screenshot of Barbie’s bizarre statement , asking others what she meant. Many Below Deck viewers quickly replied with quirky responses, making fun of Barbie and laughing at her confusing job. “you sold... finance,” a Redditor sarcastically asked, stating how weird it sounded.

Another Reddit user wrote, “was she selling something in a booth in teimp tower?” and wondered what she meant. Someone even said, “I had to rewind and listen again,” stating that they worked in finance but never heard anyone say they sold finance for a living.

Barbie’s below deck storyline explained, barbie doesn't get along with some of her co-stars.

Barbie’s appearance on Below Deck is just as confusing as her comment about her past job. She’s good at her job and qualified to work on a yacht. But she has trouble working with her crew members and leaving a good impression. Barbie isn’t on the same page as Fraser and hates his guts for mistreating her. At the same time, she does the same to Cat by behaving poorly towards her instead of going a bit easy on her. Barbie is also in a confusing love triangle. She’s leading Kyle Stillie on but playing with Ben Willoughby’s emotions.

It's understandable that viewers are confused by Barbie's previous job, as no one typically sells finance . This leaves viewers unsure of what the Below Deck stewardess meant when she claimed to have sold finances on Wall Street in the Trump building. It's not just an odd statement, it's downright outrageous. Finance refers to the management of money, which includes tasks like borrowing, investing, lending, saving, budgeting, and forecasting. It's not a physical object that can be sold. It's possible that Barbie misspoke while describing her past job and didn't correct herself to avoid embarrassment in front of the charter guests.

Still, viewers should probably go a bit easy on Barbie. The young Stew is based out of Argentina. Therefore, she must have grown up speaking her native language, Spanish . It’s possible that the Below Deck star just didn’t know how to articulate her last job. Many viewers are probably right to speculate that Barbie was perhaps talking about doing business and working in the finance industry. She’s very smart and knows multiple languages. Therefore, it’s hard to believe that she made a mistake. It was probably a vocabulary issue that stopped the Below Deck star from describing her job.

Below Deck airs Mondays at 9 p.m. EDT on Bravo, then streams the following day on Peacock.

‘Below Deck’ Sails Into a New Era

With a different captain at the helm and new production elements, the reality show about charter yachts is switching up its style.

Starting a new season of “ Below Deck ” can be similar to returning to summer camp as a kid — you know it’s going to be fun and that you’ll be in the same environment, but some of the people will be different and you’re not quite sure what the vibes will be.

This time around, in particular, feels that way because for the first time in the show’s 11-season run, Captain Lee Rosbach is no longer at the helm. It’s a pivotal moment for a franchise that has become one of the most popular entities in the sprawling universe of reality TV since premiering on Bravo in 2013 . The show’s appeal was built on endless romances between various crew members (“boatmances,” as they came to be known), horrible charter guests and some sort of passive-aggressive fight about how many shackles of the anchor chain should be in the water. And there was always Rosbach presiding over the drama as he trudged around the boat, reeling off one liners like “I’m madder than a pissed-on chicken” and “we screwed the pooch so many times we should have a litter of puppies running around.”

At the center of the show now is Kerry Titheradge (the stern yet goofy captain of “Below Deck Adventure” fame), who is managing the Motor Yacht Saint David with the cheeky chief stew Fraser Olender by his side.

With that change in captain, the energy on the boat — both onscreen and off — is different, according to Olender.

“I feel like Kerry this season, as opposed to Lee, has a no B.S. attitude, which I love with him,” Olender said in an interview. “With Kerry, he taught me a lot and sort of forced to me confront issues directly with my team, work them out, as opposed to making executive decisions too soon.”

This shift in management style changes the central conflict — whereas the drama once focused on the captain swiftly kicking out any unpleasant crew member (as we might have seen with Rosbach), the drama now focuses on the whole crew trying to get along (since Titheradge gives people those second chances).

Additionally, Olender noted that the captain’s relationship with the crew can also affect the drama on board.

“Captains absolutely do get involved, whether they know it or not,” Olender said, adding that for the crew, everything is about “trying to impress your captain.”

This phenomenon plays out early in the new season when the lead deckhand, Ben Willoughby, called out a fellow crew member over the radios about not wearing a life vest — something he easily could have done in private. The drama that followed became an interpersonal conflict between the two of them, both with the ultimate goal of impressing Titheradge. (Of course, the two deckhands had kissed on the previous crew night out, which is more in line with the “Below Deck” drama viewers are used to.)

For “Below Deck” showrunners, the changeovers in the cast allowed them to rethink what the show would look like.

From the season premiere, it was immediately apparent that Rosbach’s absence wasn’t the only change this season: The filming is sleeker, the daily, multicourse meals prepared by the chef are given their own glamour shots and the cameras sometimes cut to the perspectives of yachties running around on deck and through the galley.

“Our showrunner, Lauren Simms, is an avid consumer of all different kinds of media,” Noah Samton, a senior vice president of unscripted current production for NBCUniversal, said in an interview. “She pitches us different ideas on how to stylistically evoke different feelings and change the mood a little bit of ‘Below Deck’ without removing what really works.”

Moving through the rest of the season, and potentially through seasons to come, Olender is aiming to bring a cutthroat management style while also bringing affection for his stews, all with his signature British humor.

On Bravo’s side, there are changes in the works for the other “Below Deck” spinoffs — including “Sailing Yacht,” “Mediterranean” and “Down Under” — which collectively, have 26 seasons. Specifically, Samton said that “Down Under” is currently filming and that even though fans should be ready to see new things, the show will stay true to its original concept.

“These are real yachties doing a real job so you have to stay within those confines because the audience isn’t going to want anything that is too produced or fake,” Samton said. “So we have to find ways to reinvent while staying true to the original concept of the show.”

And as Olender said: “I’m sure that every year if I were to work with this franchise again, that I’ll be thrown a collection of total chaotic and disastrous stews — that’s what makes it watchable.”
