Jarvis Newman

Founder and owner for 35 years

Bio:    Jarvis grew up in Southwest Harbor, following a long line of boatbuilding and fishing ancestors. In the mid-1960s while working at the Henry Hinckley Company, he made a mold from a locally built rowboat, and then from the Friendship Sloop, Old Baldy, building one of the first fiberglass Friendships.   Then he saw a potential market for work boats in glass, and inspired by the designs of boatbuilders, Bunker & Ellis, in 1971 he began building 36' hulls, designed by Raymond Bunker, his father-in-law. A few years later, Ralph Stanley, another local builder, designed a 32' model, which Jarvis also built in solid glass. The family Friendship Sloop, 31' Dictator, a 1904 Robert McLain built sloop, was the plug for a 2nd Friendship Sloop mold.   Later, Royal Lowell and Eliot Spalding designed 46' and 38' powerboat models to round out the fleet of Newman hulls. After selling the boat-building business in 1979, he opened a brokerage business and has sold both used and new boats since. Passing in 2019, he enjoyed a life of sailing his Friendship Sloops, Bullseyes and various powerboats with many friends and family members.

Bio: Kathe grew up in the village of Manset in and out of their father's and grandfather's boat shops and on the water in various vessels. Sailing lessons and racing at camps and on the family boats were a large part of summers with family and friends. From the late '60s through early '80s, the family summer vacation was going to the Friendship Sloop Races on Dictator.  Kathe and her husband, Dan, live on Mount Desert Island and have five grown children and grandchildren.  They both are USCG Master Captains and enjoy working and recreating on the water aboard their wooden Friendship Sloop and Bunker & Ellis wooden power boat.

An Unusual Downeast Yacht For Sale

Anybody writing about the history of Maine’s Down East boatbuilding culture would have to include the name Jarvis Newman and at least a few of the vessels that his yard produced. Born in 1935, he spent his teenage years lobstering and fishing in Long Island Sound, then worked at a variety of jobs before moving to Southwest Harbor to work in the fiberglass department at what would go on to become Hinckley Yachts . Newman realized that sailboat owners needed a rowboat or tender, so he started building them. In 1970, Jarvis Newman Boats was formed, and its powerboats and Friendship Sloops started to dot Maine’s harbors.

Today, it’s increasingly unusual to see any of the 90 boats that Jarvis Newman built come up on the brokerage market. About half of the original builds went to commercial fishermen, with the other half going to recreational boaters—meaning there were only ever about 45 of the classics available for cruising yachtsmen at all. Some have undergone restorations or refits, and those that present in top condition are especially precious when they show up for sale in the marketplace.

Hence the $375,000 asking price on Bounder , whose hull was built by Jarvis Newman and then shipped to Lyman-Morse for custom-built interiors and systems. Ever since this boat’s finishing in 1988, it’s had just one owner, and it has been stored as well as maintained at Lyman-Morse.

Some of the more recent work includes stripping and revarnishing in 2019, the addition of a new flybridge enclosure that same year, and the addition of new house and starter 8D Lifeline AGM batteries in 2021.

Earlier, in 2008, the boat underwent a repower with an 800-horsepower Caterpillar 3406E. According to the team at Lyman-Morse, the engine gives Bounder a top speed of 20 knots and a cruising speed of 17 knots.

The boat has a classic feel in just about every respect, inside and out. Its solid fiberglass hull is painted with Awlgrip’s flag blue, along with a red and white boot stripe. The house is Awlgrip’s Matterhorn white, and inside, the Herreshoff aesthetic includes a varnished teak and holly sole. Furniture and cabinetry is white, with varnished raised mahogany trim and doors. Overheads are white with laminated mahogany beams and trim. All the thru-hulls are bronze.

Few yachts are as thoroughly enjoyed or well taken care of as is this Jarvis Newman 46. Her single diesel provides a pleasant, efficient 11.6 kt cruise at 1850 RPM (wide open is 2350) while her 10 HP bow thruster makes docking a dream. The layout is a 2 stateroom galley down arrangement with 2 heads, the master head having a stall shower. She has been periodically upgraded the most significant of which is having new teak decks laid in her cockpit and being Awlgripped from the rail to the house top in 2014 (the hull was done a couple of years earlier). Stunning in every detail!

Full Details

Vessel walk-thru.

Handsomely finished interior, done in the Herreshoff Style, in a 2 stateroom galley down layout with varnished teak trim on white flat panels. The soles are fiberglass over ply with recent carpet and vinyl type flooring in the heads and galley. There is abundant natural light and ventilation with 6 opening ports, 3 large hatches, 2 dorades and a wheelhouse surrounded with windows, some of them sliders. All opening ports hatches and some windows with screens. There is 12 volt lighting throughout with dome lamps and decorative side lamps near areas where one would read. When the natural ventilation is insufficient there is reverse cycle air conditioning (heats & cools) in all spaces as well as Espar diesel cabin heat. Headroom is 6'-3" in the Salon, 6'-6" in the galley and Master Stateroom and 7'+ in the guest stateroom forward.

One enters the  Main Salon  from the centerline door aft. To starboard is a 6'-6" L-shaped settee with storage under. Dining is from a varnished teak pedestal table which easily accommodates 6. Forward of the settee is a large bureau with drawers and locker while aft is a deep storage locker with book shelf atop. To port is a straight 6'-6" settee with drawers under. This settee will pull out to make a very generous double berth. Aft of that is a wet bar with beverage and glass storage, small sink and Ice Maker (owner does not use the latter); While forward is the port side  helm station . The helm station features full vessel controls and navionics and electrical distribution panels.

Down 3 steps (with storage under) and to starboard is the  extended U-shaped Galley  featuring Papyrus Formica counter tops with single basin stainless steel sink. Storage is found in two sets of drawers and 2 lockers as well as in shelving with dividers outboard. A full sized Norcold dual voltage refrigerator freezer unit easily handles all chilled food stuffs while a Stainless steel Shipmate 3 burner propane stove manages the cooking. An Optimus Microwave handles re-heats.

Immediately to port is the  Master Stateroom  which features a single berth inboard and double berth outboard. There are 4 deep cargo drawers below each berth as well as a small bureau/night stand with storage between them. Forward and outboard is a large hanging locker. Access to the  Master Head  is at the forward bulkhead. This head is fitted with a separate stall shower as well a vanity outboard with Formica counter and stainless steel sink and manual W.C. plumbed via a Y valve to the holding tank.

Proceeding forward from the galley one finds the  Guest Stateroom  fitted with a V type berth below which there are 5 deep cargo drawers and above which the hull is lined with varnished teak trim and a storage shelf and locker. All the way forward, between the berth is a small dressing seat with storage under. The  Guest Head  is just aft of the stateroom and is fitted with manaul W.C. and large vanity providing ample storage and a stainless sink.

Like the exterior, the interior is beautifully appointed and equally as nicely maintained.

Hull & Deck

Solid fiberglass hull  Awlgripped Jade Mist Green with White boot top in 2010 . Fiberglass spray and quarter rails capped with stainless half round. Fiberglass house and decks with closed Kelgecell foam coring  Awlgripped from the rail to the house top in 2013/14 with Moondust Awgrip with Griptex in appropriate non-skid areas, on white.   All brightwork has been stripped and refinished done over a period of time in stages between app 2005 and 2014 and is in excellent condition.   The cockpit decking is 3/4" teak glued down over a structural fiberglass deck and is in excellent condition showing no wear installed in 2009/10.  All exterior trim is varnished teak.

The full width cockpit provides ample main deck level entertaining, plenty of room for deck chairs. On centerline there is a voluminous lazarette and additional storage is found under the steps P&S and in a locker forward and to starboard. Wide side decks extend fore and aft with convenient hand holds leading forward to where the stainless safety rail overlaps the forward end of the house.

A gently sloped stainless steel ladder with teak treads leads to the flying bridge with L-shaped seating to starboard and a straight settee to port as well as the varnished ladder back Capt. chair, easily seats 10. There is storage in lockers abaft the L-settee.

Additional Information

On just her second long term owner, ROARING BULL, is a fortunate Jarvis Newman 46. Both owners have lovingly cared for her and her current owner has done periodic upgrades of systems and finishes. These are remarkable sea boats and this one is a delight to show and be onboard of.
