Panther is purpose designed as a shallow draft cruiser to be easily managed by a single individual, couple, or small family in search of cruising adventures and day excursions in waters not readily available to most cruising boats of her size.

To this point, Panther under the command of her owner / designer / builder has circumnavigated South Florida via the Florida Keys, Everglades, Lake Okeechobee and ICW. Under the same single-handed command, Panther has cruised the entire US East Coast from Florida to Maine by way of offshore passages and transit of the Intracoastal Waterway.

During the above mentioned expeditions Panther was frequently in off-shore unprotected waters run in 2- to 3-foot seas and 5- to 15-knot winds where she performed beautifully and when conditions became less advantageous Panther’s extreme shoal draft capabilities and low bridge clearance height (9’) allowed her to be run uninterrupted at speed in protected (sometimes shoal) waters where most cruising power boats would fear to tread. Not everybody has time for long distance cruising and if for Panther’s next owners time aboard is limited she is sold with a rugged double-axle (Five Star) trailer that allows her to cruise at 60 knots along the highway and scoot down little used back roads to be launched wherever her owners decide to explore be it deep water, shoals and banks, salt water or fresh.

Hull and Deck Construction

Hull construction is Chilean Arauco ACX plywood, solid wood (Douglas fir) and epoxy with an exterior skin of Xynole fabric set in epoxy. Bow construction is heavy duty with solid wood apron, stem, and forefoot structure of Wolmanized 4x4 timber to withstand possible collisions with unseen submerged objects.

Hull, coach roof and pilot house top are foam-core for heat and sound insulation. There is hull insulation between topsides planking and ceiling planking.

DESIGN COMMENTARY—COMMUTER 24, 27, 32, 36, 40 and 44

(New Designs—Commuter 24, 42, 43 and 325 Trailerable)

A number of years ago, a local Key West developer came to us with a request for a very shallow draft powerboat design. This gentleman had built the original Phil Bolger Tennessee power sharpie many years ago. He sold the boat (she was still in Key West) shortly after completing her, and for years dreamt about building a larger power sharpie.

Working from ideas and sketches, I drew a preliminary concept boat. We modified that until we arrived at the drawings for Magic—the original Commuter 36. We wanted the character and appearance of the American 1930’s commuter yachts, with the shoal draft of the sharpie, and a curved superstructure almost along art-deco lines. The cabin would require six feet headroom, and there would be berths for four, plus a galley and head. The cockpit would be huge, with a PT boat style helm station, and a large awning for shelter from the tropical sun. The boat would be outboard-powered, for simplicity, easy maintenance, and especially so the boat could be poled across the Florida flats in less than a foot of water. Hence this design may be the largest “flats” boat ever conceived. It is a pity that my client doesn’t care about bone fishing! What he does care about is gunk-holing in very shallow water, bird-watching, exploring the wildlife of Florida Bay and the Everglades, and running up rivers and mangrove creeks. And anchoring behind keys and exploring beaches that no other boat of this size and type could even dream about approaching—and staying there for days at a time.

After the design evolved to where we all wanted it, he told us to build the boat. Construction was very simple, light, strong, and fast—and inexpensive. The hull is planked with sheets of ½” plywood—two layers on the bottom laid at opposite diagonals, and one layer for the topsides, butted with butt blocks. The hull is built over ½” plywood bulkheads set up on a strongback. Sheer clamps, chine logs and bilge stringers are ripped from conventional 2x4 stock. The deck and coachroof are foam-core plywood—¼” over 1 ½” closed-cell polyurethane foam with 1/8” plywood headliners. Beams are sawn from 1 ½” spruce 2x12’s and are spaced between the two-ply layers in the same layer as the foam. Fore-and-aft web frames are 3/8” plywood and extend from bulkhead #2 to the transom. All blind compartments are foam-filled, giving the boat enough positive floatation to make her unsinkable—the foam compartments also prevent vibration and noise from pounding. The boat has a huge 110g. fuel tank under the bridge deck, and two 30g. bladder-type water tanks under the settees. There is a large ice box, and a 30g. holding tank for the marine toilet. All exterior surfaces are covered with Xynole-polyester fabric saturated with epoxy. This composite is vastly superior to fiberglass as a covering system for cold-molded wood construction. Paint systems are linear-polyurethane outside and epoxy inside. We trimmed her out with varnished mahogany inside, and natural teak outside. Table, doors and drawers are varnished mahogany, except the entry door, which is teak. All hatches and portlights are opening. Gel-cell batteries are located aft of the fuel tank compartment under a water-tight hatch. Ceiling planking is varnished cypress; the cabin sole is teak and holly plywood. The entire project took eleven weeks. Materials costs in 1997, including engine, tankage and awning, were about $25,000—almost unbelievably inexpensive.

For power we settled on the Honda 90 four-stroke, which has since been replaced after years of good service. Steering is hydraulic, with a 24” stainless steel destroyer wheel. Single-lever control is Morse. The finished boat cruises at 19 miles per hour consuming slightly over 4 gallons per hour, and runs wide open at about 24 miles per hour. We feel strongly that 90 to 115hp is right for the hull; a larger engine would over-power her, and a smaller engine would provide inferior performance.

To sum things up, the Commuter 36 is a unique family cabin cruiser: easy and inexpensive to build, able to be used in extremely shallow water, economical and great fun to operate, and well-suited to several kinds of fishing. Because of her extreme shoal draft and light weight, she is not intended for

use in rough water, for long off-shore passages, or for being driven hard for extended periods in high chop. She is, however, safe and comfortable, and capable of crossing the Gulf Stream to Cuba and the Bahamas in settled, predictable weather. And she has the fuel range to make such trips practical.

In early 2004 I designed a second hull for the C-36. Above the water and inside, the new hull is identical to the original. This modified hull draws four more inches, has deeper V sections in the bow, carries the V further aft, and can be configured for either twin outboards or an inboard. Propulsion for the latter may be gas or diesel, conventional screw, jet-drive or I/O. The stern is a little fuller to support the additional weight—the twin outboards would be transom-mounted (not inset as the original was). The second version will displace approximately 500lbs more than the original, and will have an additional 2” of headroom. While still not intended as an offshore cruiser, the new hull will be able to run a little faster in chop, will be able to run in larger seas, and will be able to venture further offshore for fishing or passage-making.

In early 2006 I finally found the time to design two more Commuters—a 27’er and a 44’er. Clients had been asking for years for both a larger and smaller version of the venerable 36. The 27 has a relatively beamier hull, and still has an interior that will please a family with two small children, including a full galley, head and shower. The 44 has a raised central pilothouse and an aft cabin which provides total privacy for two couples. She is a large version of the 2nd generation 36’ hull, in the true commuter style. Long and lean, she will punch into moderate sea and chop, with lighter weight, higher strength, lower maintenance and lower fuel consumption than her predecessors. This is an ideal coastal cruiser and island hopper, and can be outfitted for the cold in down-east Maine, or the heat of a Bahamian summer. For conventional power I have recommended two of the new Yanmar 4JH3-DTE turbo diesels. These engines produce 86 continuous horsepower. A second option is the new-generation diesel-electric hybrids manufactured by Solomon Technologies and Fischer-Panda. Using high-voltage DC permanent-magnet motors, a single gen-set can be used to power single or twin electric motors much more efficiently than using conventional diesel power. With glass-mat batteries, solar panels and wind generators, a Commuter 44 could cruise in total silence for hours at a time. A third option is to use controlled-pitch propellers (such as those manufactured by Hundestadt), allowing optimum fuel-consumption for any given sea conditions and speed, including running on one diesel.

Now there is a new Commuter 32 with the same basic visual appeal of the original 36, with a similar interior arrangement utilizing the 2nd generation hull shape with proportionately greater beam. And a Commuter 40 with a Maxi-trailerable beam of 10’ with the same interior layout as the 44, using a single turbo Yanmar instead of twins. In 2020 I designed a 42-foot version, with a revised interior, and a round-bilge option for extreme efficiency (non-planing hullform).

In summer of 2017, I designed a Commuter 24—a little beamier and heavier, proportionately, with deep Vee bow sections and transom-mounted 50 to 75 hp 4-stroke outboard. Smaller twins may also be used (25 to 35 hp). This smallest Commuter will be light, fast, highly maneuverable, easily trailered, and perfect for fishing and weekend or longer cruises.

After the original C 36 was destroyed in a hurricane, I designed a new Commuter 43 for Erik DeBoer in Key West. The prototype was built by my friends Hylan & Brown, in my home town of Brooklin, Maine. This is a very sophisticated version, capable of long distance cruising. She is powered by twin 200 HP outboards, and has built in swim platforms.

In 2021 I designed a Commuter 325, a slightly larger version of the 32’er, with optional pilothouse and modified hullform. I built the prototype for myself, and intend to live aboard and cruise from Canada to the Bahamas. She is powered by a Yamaha F90 outboard.

"Panther" Reflex 38

Panther is one of the original ten “big cats” built for Sir Robin Knox-Johnston’s Clipper Ventures Ltd and was designed by Christian Stimson, built in Cowes by Harley Raceboats.

He wanted a fleet of strong racing yachts, with ocean crossing capability, to train crews for round-the-world voyages.

She's an extraordinarily sleek and fast Italian beauty of esteemed heritage from Cantieri di Baia. Pearwood interior with granite countertops is in great condition. Crew stateroom and head is forward with separate entrance. The Panther is a marvel in any harbor. This boat has seen little use and nominal care in recent years. A new owner would want to upgrade the navigational electronics, overhaul or replace some of the systems, and aesthetically restore the boat to its full magnificence. The engine room in particular requires some attention to remove the evidence of an electrical fire that preceded the current owner. Engine room systems are operational. Three separate heads, each with a bidet and enclosed shower. The master head and one of the guest heads include saunas. Granite countertops. Crew quarters in bow (including an additional head and shower) is accessed from foredeck. Refrigerator and freezer in cockpit. 4 sleeping berths with 2 doubles and 2 singles in 4 cabin(s) 4 burner electric Stove. Propulsion is by Arneson surface drives which are like inboards but coming out of the transom and steerable and trimmable. An extra set of Rolla surface-piercing propellers is stored aboard. New ones cost $35k each. There are two Kohler 15 kw generators. One runs and drives the hydraulic pump for the windlass and bow thruster. The other one has a good motor but needs the generator rebuilt. The MTU diesels have been regularly serviced and are in good mechanical condition, with approximately 1200 hours. They were easily started recently. Spares include an extra rebuilt turbocharger. Bow thruster. 15KW diesel genset will power everything. This is a lot of yacht for a great price! All the other ones on YW listed for over a million and this would not take that much $ to restore its condition.

The bottom has never been painter.  Engines are flushed after use.  Professionally maintained every season!

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

VESSEL REVIEW | Sinichka – Electric commuter boats designed for Russia’s Moskva River

A series of three new electric monohull commuter ferries have already begun operational sailings on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.

Built by Russian shipyard Emperium, sister vessels Sinichka , Filka , and Presnya – all named after rivers in Moscow – are being operated by the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans). They are the first units of a planned fleet of 20 vessels that will serve the capital city and other nearby communities. The new ferry system will be the water transport system to be operated on the Moskva River in 16 years.

Each vessel has a welded aluminium hull, an LOA of 21 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a draught of only 1.4 metres, a displacement of 40 tonnes, and capacity for 80 passengers plus two crewmembers. Seating is available for 42 passengers on each ferry, and the main cabins are also fitted with USB charging ports, wifi connectivity, tables, toilets, and space for bicycles and scooters. The cabin layout can be rearranged to allow the operator to adjust the distances between the seats and to install armrests of varying widths.

An open upper deck is also accessible to passengers and is the only area on each ferry where smoking is allowed.

The ferries are all of modular construction with each ferry’s wheelhouse, main cabin, and other structural elements being built as complete, separate components. This enables the ferries to be easily dismantled for transport to anywhere in Russia by rail and then quickly re-assembled within seven days.

The ferries are also ice-capable. Recently completed operational trials on the Moskva showed that the vessels can also easily navigate under mild winter conditions with broken surface ice, though year-round operations are planned for the entire fleet.

The ferries are each fitted with 500kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that supply power to two 134kW motors. This configuration can deliver a maximum speed of 11.8 knots, a cruising speed of just under 10 knots, and a range of 150 kilometres.

Emperium said the transfer of rotation of electric motors to the propeller is carried out by direct drive. As a propulsion installation, a pulling rotary propeller-steering column with double screws is used. The installation of double pulling screws, with similar power, allows an operator to increase the efficiency of the propulsion system to deliver a slightly higher speed or to reduce energy consumption. This arrangement also provides the ferries with enhanced manoeuvrability necessary for navigating in close quarters.

The batteries themselves have projected service lives of 10 to 12 years and are fitted with safety features such as built-in fire extinguishers and gas vents. Quick-disconnect features allow the batteries to be easily removed for replacement or maintenance.

Some of our readers have expressed disquiet at our publication of reviews and articles describing new vessels from Russia. We at Baird Maritime can understand and sympathise with those views. However, despite the behaviour of the country’s leaders, we believe that the maritime world needs to learn of the latest developments in vessel design and construction there.

2 dead after boat collision in Elliot Key

SOUTH MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) - Two people have died after they were involved in what officials described as a boat accident in Biscayne Bay.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the scene of the accident in Elliot Key a two-vessel boating accident, Sunday night.

Paramedics airlifted both victims to Jackson South Medical Center, but they died as a result of their injuries, officials said.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, seven people were onboard a 51′ Azimut and another seven were on board a 17′ Key West in the South Biscayne Bay area when the collision occurred around 6:45 p.m.

Both vessels involved were brought to Black Point Marina in South Miami-Dade.

One person who witnessed the rescue spoke to 7News at the marina.

“I’m just shocked because we were having a hot volume day at work,” he recalled. “This is one of our good days, Sunday, here at Black Point Ocean Grill, and I come outside and I hear somebody say, ‘Hey, someone could have possibly died.’ I was just shocked because I didn’t think it would happen today — not even happen today. Wow, I hope they’re OK though!”

The U.S. Coast Guard told 7News that when they arrived at the scene, they rescued someone in the water.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials have taken over the investigation.

Man busted smuggling 31 migrants on boat, feds say.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A man appeared in Fort Lauderdale federal court Monday after federal authorities busted him smuggling nearly three dozen migrants on his boat off the coast of South Florida, according to a criminal complaint.

Derek Campton, 43, is facing a federal charge of bringing aliens into the United States.

According to the criminal complaint, the bust happened Friday.

Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent Joshua Stanbery wrote that authorities had been made aware that Campton’s boat was headed westward toward the U.S.

Federal agents were unable to intercept the vessel, Stanbery wrote, but Miami-Dade police were able to stop it about two miles off the coast of Key Biscayne; authorities said they saw a man later identified as Campton operating the boat.

Authorities said they boarded the vessel and found 31 migrants, most of whom were in the boat’s cabin.

They were from Haiti and the Bahamas, Stanbery wrote, and none of them had the proper documentation to enter the U.S.

U.S. Coast Guard crews transferred the migrants to their custody, while authorities took Campton to the U.S. Border Patrol station in Dania Beach, the court documents state.

There, he admitted to taking the boat from the Bahamas to U.S. territorial waters to “knowingly smuggle illegal aliens, for profit,” Stanbery wrote.

Campton received the boat in question “as compensation for conducting human smuggling ventures,” the agent wrote.

Authorities said Campton told investigators that he lived in a separate boat in the Bahamas and did not have ties to South Florida.

He would later be jailed in Broward County and his case is being heard in the U.S. Southern District of Florida, however.

Court records show a judge granted him a $100,000 personal surety bond, meaning he didn’t have to post bail. However, if he fails to appear in court, the government can sue him for that amount.

The judge issued a number of requirements, including that Campton surrender his passport, refrain from possessing a gun and required that he not visit any transportation centers, including airports, marinas and train stations.

He was also required to submit to GPS monitoring.

There are plenty of restaurants in South Florida that are prized for their special view — ocean, Intracoastal, sunset or city skyline. 

But how about a table overlooking ice? Or the region’s hottest craze, pickleball?

The Florida Panthers can put you in the catbird seat for both at downtown Fort Lauderdale’s newest restaurant, The Federal, inside the Cats’ new Baptist Health IcePlex practice facility in Holiday Park . 

A burgers-and-beers eatery with a sports bent and elevated culinary ambitions, The Federal is set to open on Wednesday, April 24. The next night, the restaurant will take part in watch-party events when the Panthers play their first road game in the NHL playoffs against rival Tampa Bay Lightning. 

A collaboration with Knallhart Management Group, which operates a half-dozen downtown hot spots, the Panthers’ first venture into the restaurant business is part of the team’s plan to make the facility a complete entertainment destination. 

Adjoining the IcePlex, the historic War Memorial Auditorium is being renovated into a 3,500-capacity concert hall that is expected to open by year’s end.

“Having a full-service restaurant in this area, with this project, really makes it a true entertainment venue,” said Bryce Hollweg, chief operating officer for the Florida Panthers. “So you have the ice rinks, the soon-to-be concert venue, a flagship team store and a restaurant.” 

Hollweg noted that The Federal will operate independently of the IcePlex. The restaurant may be accessed through the IcePlex, but patrons also can use a separate entrance on the opposite side of the building. The Federal will have its own hours of operation.  

Warm and relaxing, with brick-lined walls, multiple TVs, butcher-block tables and leather banquettes the color of toasted caramel, The Federal is a nearly 200-seat venue on the second floor. 

The Federal has three unique spaces that should be especially popular. A room they are calling Free Skate is bordered by a glass wall that offers a view of the indoor public skating rink, the perfect spot for a parent to refresh while the kids do their thing on the ice. On the other side of the restaurant, a space called the Panthers room overlooks the ice sheet where the team practices. During a recent visit, Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Reinhart and other players could be seen skating below.  

But, arguably, the most prized tables will be in the back of the restaurant in a sunny space called the Terrace, with a large bar and light pouring in through floor-to-ceiling windows. On the other side of those windows, patio tables overlook Holiday Park’s six bustling pickleball courts, the hypnotic thwock-thwock a familiar metronome of modern life. 

It was important to the Panthers that the IcePlex be integrated into Holiday Park and celebrate that environment, Hollweg said. 

“This view, and the aperture that you get, is just a really cool spot,” he said, standing on the Terrace. “It would be a huge failure not to have a patio where you can sit, especially in our weather, our climate, and oversee what is a beautiful recreational area and park.”

Steps away from the pickleball courts, under a large sign for The Federal on the back of the IcePlex, is the door that leads to a dedicated flight of stairs up to the restaurant. 

“That’s great that it’s finally opening. We’ve been watching it go in,” said Liz Farmer, 32, of Fort Lauderdale, while standing near the courts on Saturday. “We would definitely go up to the bar after playing. … We’re not that serious [about pickleball], so we might go before we play!”

The Federal is the latest project from local hospitality veteran David Cardaci’s Knallhart Management Group, which also operates popular local spots including Rhythm & Vine, The Wilder, Holly Blue , Roxanne’s and Palm Room, which opened a year ago on Las Olas Boulevard .  

Knallhart soon will open The Shorely, a lounge and entertainment venue created on a retired 500-person ferry boat, a centerpiece of Marina Village at Bahia Mar on Fort Lauderdale beach.  

But The Federal seems to have a special place in the heart of Cardaci, whose 7-year-old son plays soccer at Holiday Park. He hopes to attract not just pickleballers and ice skaters to The Federal, but families from the entire park. 

“For every season, whether it be baseball, soccer, football, there’s probably thousands of families with children out here. It’s an incredible facility. All those families go meet somewhere after the game or after practice. This is perfect for every family,” Cardaci said.

Due to The Federal’s proximity to the pickleballers, that audience is already getting special attention from Cardaci. He’s hoping to rig some kind of delivery system between the restaurant and the pickleball courts. 

“Of course we want the pickleballers here before and after games, but I’m going to do my best to find a way to get food and/or beverage down to the pickleballers, at the court, in a pretty efficient, interesting way,” he said with a smile. “I’m not sure if it’ll happen, but that’s my intent. We’re working on ideas.”

The Federal will be open daily, beginning with a full breakfast and a grab-and-go menu called The Federal Express.  Representative lunch and dinner starters include fish dip, guacamole and poutine (all $10). Among the handhelds are The Federal Burger ($14, with fries), lobster roll ($20) and fish tacos ($16), while main entrees include salmon ($24), ribs (half-rack $22) and a New York strip steak ($32).

Like its sister properties, the menu of cocktails and wine is thoughtful and filled with moments of serendipity (see the Dulce de Leche Espresso Martini, $16). The draft beer list includes Graphic IPA ($7) from nearby Gulf Stream Brewing, which says all you need to know. 

There is a kids’ menu for those 10 and younger, and a dessert menu starting with Fireman Derek’s award-winning Key lime pie ($12). 

Brunch (of course) will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. And Happy Hour will offer half-off select beer, wine, spirits and dips from 3 to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Wednesdays will be Burger Night, with $10 Federal Burger and fries (with purchase of a drink).  

The chef is Brian Rivera, most recently of The Wilder. The general manager is Cindy Chaviano, formerly of Flagler Village restaurant Holly Blue, before that Boatyard. 

Chaviano wants The Federal to be considered a sporty gastropub where families feel comfortable. 

“That’s what really attracted me to the project, is that it is more family friendly. That’s something that I’ve been dealing with for a long time and I really enjoy doing, having the kids around,” she said.
