Corribee Mk2 used boat review: Robert Tucker design has stood the test of time

Clive Marsh

Prolific boat owner Clive Marsh shares his experiences with the Corribee Mk2 and offers a warning to wait a while before changing a boat’s colour…

I found my Robert Tucker-designed Corribee Mk2 at Tarquin’s Boat Yard in Emsworth which is now known as Emsworth Marina. She was out of the water sporting a very eye-catching bright yellow hull and appropriately named Petite Beure .

She looked perfect in every regard apart from one thing, I didn’t then like yellow hulled boats. Still, this was a minor problem and I set about changing the hull to dark blue.

Painting a good GRP hull is really a bit daft. Not only does it have to be done with great care it will probably diminish the value of the boat when one comes to selling it.  This is because the future buyer might think you’re hiding something. So it’s best to take pictures before painting and at each stage of the process.

Painting involves many stages and I decided to follow International Paint’s system and seek their advice at each stage of the process.

Doing this paid off and the finished job looked great and as far as I know is still looking good. The job took several days spread over a week and during this time I noticed that the young couple berthed next to me were preparing their 21ft sailboat for a repaint too.

It was blue and while they rubbed it down I asked them what colour they were changing to. Yellow they said. They’d admired my boat so much that they wanted a yellow boat too! Such is life – we often want something different to what we already have.

Silhouette 17 used boat review: This pocket cruiser can be a real bargain

The age of discovery – what we can learn from yacht design of the 1960s

The 1960s saw a huge increase in sailing participation, fuelled in part by the DIY boatbuilding boom. Rupert Holmes reports

Hand painting a Corribee Mk2

I have always been good with a paint brush and decided to use this method rather than spraying. With the correct preparation and application it would be hard to tell the difference between my hand painting and a sprayed job.

If you buy a complete paint system from a reputable marine supplier it should contain all the instructions regarding health and safety (for yourself and those around you), preparation, temperature, conditions and the various applications.

Having chosen International Paint I used their helpline on one occasion and found it most useful. The boat had been out of the water for nearly a year and was essentially dry. I needed a good dry week with little wind so as to avoid dust being blown onto the hull’s surface.

PBO276.col_clivesboats_2pg.corribee_sketch

Clive’s sketch of a Corribee under sail

After rubbing and gently sanding I cleaned the hull with the manufacturer’s cleaning substance and when dry applied a coat of their etching primer.

This was followed by an undercoat and then two coats of the mixed two pot system. International Paint provides different systems for above and below the waterline including osmosis protection and antifouling products.

While I was taking a lot of time to research and do a proper job the couple next to me had just got a few pots of enamel paint from their local hardware store and slapped it on. I doubt it would last a season whereas Petite Beure (now called Tui ) looked perfect 20 years later.

I chose Tui for the new name because I always had one of these birds in my New Zealand garden and ‘Tango Uniform India’ is a lot quicker to say on the VHF than ‘Papa Echo, Tango, India, Tango, Echo, Bravo, Echo, Uniform, Romeo, Echo’… too late. Short names are best.

PBO276.col_clivesboats_2pg.corribee-mk2_marina_emsworth

Tui on her marina berth at Emsworth

Launch day came and once there was enough water over the tidal sill at Emsworth Marina we made our way under power towards Hayling Island and the Chichester bar.

I’d changed the motor from a 4hp to a 5hp which gave very adequate power. Unfortunately the larger motor was a lot heavier to manhandle over the pushpit and mount onto the pad. The Corribee Mk2 has a very good looking overhang at the stern but this is not ideal for outboard motors .

I like to bring the prop out of the water when sailing but this is a struggle on the Corribee when sailing single-handed . Some Corribees have small inboard diesels fitted and I’m sure this is a better arrangement given the profile of the boat.

PBO276.col_clivesboats_2pg.difficult_outboard_access

Looking aft to show difficult outboard motor access

Under sail she performed very well even on my baggy old sails. The fin keel version will probably sail better but Tui ’s bilge keels were ideal for my little passages and desire to run up a beach or onto a hard for maintenance.

She’s ideal for a run onto Bosham hard on an evening ebb tide, then dinner at the Anchor Bleu, followed by a quiet motionless night ready to float off in the morning. This is the sort of thing that bilge keel boats are made for but, of course, you do need to be sure of the ground.

For example, running a bilge keel boat onto the steep banks of a river like the Rother at Rye could result in a very unpleasant experience.

Corribee Mk2 design features

Below the waterline the rudder on my Corribee Mk2 was protected by a skeg. The ballast was encapsulated within the GRP bilge keels which were asymmetric aerofoils in design to improve windward performance.

The only skin fittings on my boat were for the self draining cockpit and they need inspecting regularly. Antifouling is a short job, the awkward bit being between the bilge keels but I could do it all in half a day.

PBO276.col_clivesboats_2pg.nice_lines

The disadvantage of having an inboard engine would be more points of water ingress to maintain, I guess. With her good looks and low profile one can’t expect a palace below. There are four berths, a sink and stove, and headroom is fine for sitting.

My 6ft son never complained but I’d think people much taller than him would find it a bit of a squeeze below but fine for sleeping. Some Corribee Mk3 versions have just two berths and manage to fit in a heads compartment.

Sea-capable cruiser

Corribees in capable hands have made a number of significant voyages including a double Atlantic crossing , circumnavigations of the UK and a passage to the Azores. But for most of us Corribees are just nice little yachts ideal for pottering around.

After many years of fun I sold Tui to a work colleague who eventually sold it on. The last time I saw her she was berthed at Bembridge and still resplendent in her nice blue paint. Robert Tucker designs tend to be attractive boats and the Corribee Mk2 is one of his best.

I owned a Deb in the late 60s, moored at Brough Haven in East Yorkshire, on the Humber – cost the princely sum of £300. I learned to sail in her, sometimes on my own and sometimes with a friend, mostly managing to avoid the Humber mud-banks …… If I remember rightly it was built by Blanks Boatyard, not Banks. Brian

My brother has fallen in love with a bilge keel one of these, and far more importantly, so has his girlfriend. They defer to me in all matters boaty but I have to confess I know next to nothing about wither the designer or the design. All help gratfully received!

My research thus far reaveals that he designed the Sillhouette, Corribee and Debutante so I am impressed so far. I didn't realise that Sea-Dart (Tristan Jones' vessel when he crossed South America) was one of his).

They are more or less scaled up versions of the Silhouette with the powder horn sheer. Fairly popular & commonly seen in the 1970/ 80s, but can't remember the last time I saw one. Most were ply construction. If this one is, make sure it's thoroughly checked for hidden pockets of rot or delamination, especially where rainwater can lodge. Unless it's been carefully maintained, 30 odd years is elderly for ply boats. If it's been Cascover sheathed, that could help to extend durability but could also hide defects. Has it been re-engined? Boats of this vintage often had small & unreliable 2 stroke inboards or outboards. Engine costs can be more than boat value. I sailed on one many years ago, seaworthy but not great performers especially to windward. Pretty boats though.

Robert Tucker was one of the most prolific and repected designers of his time. Many of his designs are still sailing although you would clearly not expect the performance of todays wonders. He was at the forefront of design of "pocket cruisers" such as those already mentioned and also the Caprice, an early 18 foot MkI version of which (Shrimpy) was sailed around the world by Shane Acton. Many of his early wooden designs went on to later versions in GRP which is generally why so many are still around. His son runs Tucker Designs which is still in naval architecture and holds original drawings of at least some of his designs (I know as I've bought some in the past).

Here is one for sale, I agree pretty ! Reasonable too ! http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk/view/F135839/ Regards Phil

Ballerina was one that made the transition to GRP, like the Caprice and Silhouette. Agree entirely with the comments about Robert Tucker - I owned and sailed several of his designs, in my yoof, and found them consistently well designed sailing boats.

Hello! They were built by the Penryn Boat Building & Engineering Co. of Penryn in Cornwall during the 60's ... I worked there for a while in about 1962/3. They also built the Falmouth Gypsy - 24ft by Rodney Warrington-Smyth and the Nova - a 27 footer, can't remember designer. The first 2 in ply and then GRP - I think the Nova was only GRP. Simple sailing days they were then ... I don't know how we managed without all today's gubbins. I suspect it was more fun! Did we get into more trouble? Discuss!

Owning a plywood Tucker designed boat I cannot recommend them highly enough - highly practical and seamanlike in their design features and genuine sea boats. Below decks everything is well thought out and they reek of traditional knowledge - beautiful. small yachts like this are absolute classics with a very high smiles to quid spent ratios - great for coastal sailing and more fun in rivers and estuaries and harbours and marinas. Manouverable enough and sail like a dinghy. Great to learn on as there is no overwhelming threat of destroying £25k of boat - cosy for couples and idea for sailing single or dual handed - Maintenance always over estimated as the trick with plywood boats is just to keep the paint touched up - would anticipate more fun in this boat than any other - tell him to get it !!

Many many years ago I was taken out several times from Ilfracombe in Balerina no 1 'Fontayne' A wooden boat which handled the seas well. We had to stay well inshore to keep out of the current as she was more comfortable than fast. Good boat for a couple pottering in as long as too much rot hasn't set in if it is a ply one. Iain

Hello, I'm new around here and have recently bought a Robert Tucker 'Ayriel Class' 26' cold-moulded cutter. Tony Tucker, son of the late Robert Tucker, was very helpful and did the survey for me. There is some rot in one side-deck (ply) so she is currently laid up at Elephant Boatyard, Bursledon, awaiting some dry weather!

sandeel

hi I have just finished rebuilding a ply Robert Tucker Mystic class from the mid 1960's the hull has lasted well but it is the deck that suffers from rain ingress, examine this carefully any lifting paint is a sign of some rot but repair is easy as generally can just cut back and fill with epoxy, or cut out the ply section and let in a new piece. IMHO really great boats!!

brianbracken

hello paul b sailing i have an Ayriel its been a great boat but after being trashed on the moorings its in a bad way i am possibly going to scrap her contact me if you need anything its in Cowes

My apologies bumping up to the top of the forum with my very first post but there was one of these (Ballerina) for sale in Penryn, Cornwall on the Flushing side of the Penryn River not more than 6 months ago - £500 (in really very good condition too) the owner was emigrating to Australia and needed a quick sale. Myself, I've got another Robert Tucker design, the Silhouette MkII in absolutely beautiful condition, built I believe in 1970 and moored close to Falmouth yacht marina. A lovely little sailer, I love her to bits. Just a quick note regarding my signature below, I've read the rules, hopefully this signature is okay - I've already included a link to the YBW Forums on my links page in advance. If inadvertently I have broken a rule, please let me know. Mark

Fantasie (Tucker)

Fantasie (Tucker) is a 18 ′ 6 ″ / 5.6 m monohull sailboat designed by Robert Tucker and built by Aquaboats/Aln Boatyard (UK) starting in 1969.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

An enlarged version of the SILHOUETTE MKI. Ballast is carried in the central keel. Was also available with GRP hull through Aquaboats.

Ballerina - job for pottering around inshore waters

Product Overview

Price as reviewed:.

Dating from the mid-sixties, the MkII Ballerina was one of the earliest glassfibre production boats. Based on an earlier moulded plywood design by Robert Tucker, the Ballerina is a pretty, 6.50m (21ft), bilge-keeled weekender with a modest, unchallenging rig and good stability. She’s just the job for pottering around inshore waters with young children and even well preserved ones can be picked up for under £3,000. They were built by various companies, including Penryn Boatbuilding in Cornwall, and a lot were home-completed to varying standards. They had three or four berths in a camping-style interior and, while most were outboard-powered, an inboard engine option was available. Headroom was limited to 1.32m (4ft 1in).

Coat of arms

The major city of Voronezh, with a population of over one million, was originally founded to protect Russia’s southern borders. By the end of the 17th Century Peter the Great had made the city the centre of Russian shipbuilding and the flagship Goto Predestinatsia was built here, which has now become one of the symbols of the city. During the Second World War much of the city was destroyed, meaning the city’s architecture is now predominantly Soviet. The city is also the unofficial capital of Russia's Black Earth Region.

Sibur Upgrades Voronezh Plant, Shares Export Plans

robert tucker yacht designs

Russian petrochemicals producer Sibur has expanded its plant in Voronezh which enabled it to increase production of styrene copolymer-based thermoplastic elastomers at by 50,000 metric tons per year, Neftegaz   reports .

Through the expansion, the site, which already produces about 85,000 tons of TPEs per year, will see the addition of new grades for compounds and adhesives. These products, targeted for the roofing and road construction end markets, will enable Sibur to better meet the growing demand for TPE both domestically and internationally. Applications will include polymer-bitumen binders, which can more than double road-pavement life up to around 10 years, the company noted.

“With new capacities to be put on stream, Sibur will be able to fully meet the prospective domestic [demand],” Sibur’s Managing Director Pavel Lyakhovich said. “On top of that, we will keep tapping into the European TPE market, with new grades set to boost our export potential.”

Sibur did not disclose an investment amount, nor did it give a timeline for the TPE expansion project. Previously, the company invested about $70 million for a capacity expansion of similar size.

On Tuesday, the company said it plans to export some 60% of the polyethylene and polypropylene output from its under-construction Zapsib petrochemical complex in the West Siberian city of Tobolsk, helping Russia expand its share of the global petrochemical market in the medium term.

Sibur’s executive director Sergey Komyshan told S&P Global Platts in an interview that looking at exports both to Europe and Asia, with some 30% of the output is likely to go to China — but a lot “will also depend on how the Russian market performs.”

Voronezh Central Park Forest and Water

Our starting point was an appreciation of the natural fundamentals, of Forest and Water which are common place in Veronezh. The city is surrounded by Forest and Water and we questioned how these fundamental elements are experienced by people day to day. The ‘sea’ is separated from the city by infrastructure such as highways and the forest, despite its proximity to the city, it is generally experienced on trips to the countryside. Our proposal made water and forest integral to Voronezh Central Park so that residents could experience these elements through play, recreation and food.

The Russian dacha is more than just a country house, in fact it’s a very complicated cultural phenomenon. For the people who own dachas, they and their children can escape the city and experience the countryside and for some it’s a place to grow vegetables. Veronezh Park’s woodland setting is an opportunity to create many of those experiences of the dacha without driving for hours every weekend.

Veronezh Central Park is also an opportunity to celebrate the agriculture of the black soil region and show case the wonderful agricultural abundance of this region. This was achieved by introducing a new woodland restaurant as a destination in the park and growing or harvesting the food for the restaurant from the park.

The park has seasonal surface water run off which currently floods the lower park and we proposed a new water system on site, a series of lakes which will become the focus of water based play, sport and recreation. The lake will be a beautiful backdrop to festivals such as the annual garden festival and will also become a focus for new ecology and activity.

Our proposals also recognised the different opportunities presented by routes that run along the contour and weave through the forest as recreational paths and new footpaths which we have proposed to cut across the contour, providing connectivity and making the park a route to school, a route to visit friends or a quick route to the bus stop, integrating walking and cycling into residents every day activities and making Veronezh Central park a focus of these green routes around the city.
