"shroud covers"?

Here's a question I've not seen discussed....boat came with what I would call shroud covers, small, slit pvc tubes that wrap the shrouds tightly, presumably to protect the foresail. Seems to me these things retain moisture (salt in my case) and may do more harm than good. Finally got around to tuning the rig today, noticed those shrouds with these covers remaining are somewhat discolored (not rusted), others are still shiny stainless. (Not speaking of the 3-4 ft of 1" pvc pipe at the bottom of the shrouds, I get that purpose.) thoughts?  

Well, yes, spreader boots are intended to protect the foresail from being damaged by the spreader tips. My only thought is: what is the purpose for 3-4' of 1" pvc pipe used as a shroud cover ?  

Ted, not speaking of spreader boots, the pvc pipe protects the foresail from hanging up on the turnbuckles/cotter pins, etc., I see that a lot on C22's and others (more like 2-3')...its the "shroud covers" I'm questioning....will post some pics nxt trip to the boat to clarify...  

You are right about the covers. Take them off.  

@rpludwig definitely try and get us perspective if you can-- formally of the saltwater (Bay Area) sailor I would generally agree-- get rid of anything that traps moisture/salt where applicable. And to everyone's point-- sail protection is legit, but it sounds like you might have a case of overkill going on?  

Now it's dawned on me, cable covers I think they are called made by Davis, supposed to protect sail from black marks and the shroud itself. I think most people have concluded as you that they trap more moisture and cut off the oxygen to SS that they are more of a detriment. They look good when fresh tho' don't they.

It's just a slit plastic tube. You can put them on when you want them, remove them when you don't.  

whatever they're called, they're coming off tomorrow!...will post some pics... ...and rather than start another thread but shroud related, bought this C22 in 2016, sailed it and enjoyed it as rigged by PO since. Noticed the fwd lower shrouds were particularly slack. Finally got around to buying a Loos gauge model PT1 and tuned the rig tday. Followed the excellent thread and links from LR, found all were WAY outta spec, esp. fwd & aft lowers, reading 5-10 on the gauge, and should be ~20-21. Not a racer, just a casual cruiser, but 2 cents, at least from a safety standpoint, invest in a Loos and tune your rig appropriately. Guilty here of not doing it for too long....many folks here "tune by feel"...I don't have that knowledge, feel, luxury or ability, plenty of racers do...fwiw

A Loos gauge was one of the first "upgrades" I bought for my boat, and I'm so glad I did it. I love the peace of mind knowing the shrouds are set to an appropriate tension. I don't use it all that often, but I very much appreciate having it when I do.  

If you plan on sailing for the next few years at least - the gauge gives a lot of peace of mind. Not much cost if you factor it over a few years. The gauge itself should last a lifetime I'd think.  

I used to use them for many years... mostly they allege to protect the job/genoa sheets from chafing around the clock while the boat sits with headsail furled... in theory that is... but I've stopped using them, and notice no significant difference in line chafing after a few years. I think it would take 50 years of normal usage for the shroud to chafe through my genoa sheets... and the sheets will by long gone by then. Similar to vinyl-covered lifelines (which I have, but wouldn't recommend, and plan to switch to uncovered), the trapping of moisture and salt, and the hiding of potential problems make these things counterproductive to the "protecting" jobs they're allegedly trying to accomplish. I say strip em off.  

Leeward Rail

I was tuning the rig after launching this year, and 2 people asked what the loos gauge was and what was going. Then, a couple weeks later, I notice a catalina 25 had the forward lowers attached to the same chainplate as the uppers. (Chainplates had two holes) So effectively no forward support for the middle of the mast. "I rigged it like the PO" I also made the mistake of trusting the PO. I have never inspected the drum on the CDI curler until this year. When setting mast rake, I discovered the forestay needed to be tightened. "Rake was ok last year. Hmmm" As I slid up the drum on the forestay I discovered that the turnbuckle had no pins and was a couple threads away from separating and bringing the whole rig down ! We all make mistaken assumptions, occasionally.

I had to buy a second Loos gauge. The smaller one I used on my Mac only works on the split backstay of the Hunter. The side shrouds require the next model up. My wrap (scar) pins arrived yesterday from APS. Removing the ring dings and tape on the turnbuckles. The new pins serve and protect.

If you are not entirely happy with your purchase, we will exchange or refund your goods in full, provided that the items are returned within 14 days of receipt.*

Faulty Goods

If you receive your goods and believe them to be faulty, please contact us straight away with a brief description of the problem. If we require you to return the product for a replacement, we will send you a pre-paid Royal Mail label for delivery back to us. Unfortuantely we cannot send the courier back to collect the items.

Returning goods to Force 4 is easy!

• Please contact us by ringing 0345 1300 710 or email on [email protected] . This way we'll be able to determine whether you would like to return the product for a refund or whether you'd like to exchange the product. We are unable to process the return of faulty goods that we're not expecting.
• We'll then give you a returns number. This returns number will need to be clearly marked on the outside of your parcel so it can be identified on arrival. Please note, failure to mark a returns reference number on the outside of your parcel may result in a delay in processing your return.
• Don't forget your proof of postage, just in case!
• Once we receive the item we'll be able to proceed with a refund or an exchange.

Our winch covers a made in two parts, an inner boot made to fit tight and an outer cover that matches your canvas. We also make binnacle covers and wheel covers to fit well so they do not collect water.

We also make companion way covers that work like a soft door. They can be made with a screen and privacy cover, or an acrylic window and privacy cover. We use Sunbrella Acrylics when necessary, butnow we have a new material called Weathermax that is very UV and chaff resistant. MAURIPRO Canvas Mainsail Covers

High Neck Mainsail is manufactured from solution dyed Acrylic with polyester or nylon webbing, and a YKK #10 top zip closure. It incorporates the stack of the mainsail and wraps around the front of the mast and under the boom. It is closed at the forward end of the mast with a zipper (closing from the bottom up) and has a webbing strap with Velcro closure around the mast at the top of the cover to prevent the zipper from accidentally opening. Closure under the boom is by adjustable webbing straps with snap black buckles placed every 600 mms.

The Horse Blanket Boom Mainsail Cover is suitable for mainsails that detach from the mast and are flaked on the boom. It is manufactured from solution dyed Acrylic with polyester or nylon webbing. The cover is closed at the forward end of the mast with a zipper (closing from the bottom up) and has a webbing strap with Velcro closure around the mast at the top of the cover to prevent the zipper from accidentally opening.

Our standard 5 to 7-day shipping is free through FedEx, or you can choose from the Express Saver, 2-Day, or Standard Overnight shipping options to receive your boat cover even sooner.

Do you make a cover for my boat.

A: Our extensive library of Exact Fit® custom boat covers includes high quality covers that are cut and patterned for more than 150 boat manufacturers. It also includes semi-custom Select Fit® covers for over 46 unique boat styles. To find out whether we have an Exact Fit® or semi-custom cover for your boat, take advantage of our easy-to-use cover finders. Simply look up the make/model/year of your boat, or shop by boat style and use our measurement guide to find the cover you need.

Which covers are trailerable?

A: All Westland boat covers are sewn and reinforced to be trailerable with straps, with the exception of our drift, inflatables, and pontoon covers. The straps include a locking buckle mechanism that effectively ties down your boat cover for safety and reliability while you’re on the road. Straps are included on all of our Exact Fit® covers and are available for purchase with Select Fit covers as well.

How do I measure for the right cover?

A: Measuring your boat for the right Westland cover is easy! Start with a straight-line measurement down the center of your boat, from bow to stern. Then, measure the beam width, or the widest point of your boat. Once you have your measurements, use our measurement guide to find the right cover for your boat. For runabout boats we take the drive type into consideration..

Does Westland make snap covers?

A: No. Instead of making snap covers, Westland secures all covers with a heavy duty unbreakable rope. If you are looking for an OEM replacement snap cover, you can take a look at our sister company, Great Lakes Boat Top. Why do I need a boat cover?

A: While many people may think a boat cover is an accessory, it’s actually a critical component to protecting and maintaining your boat, a significant financial investment. When you choose a high quality, properly-fitted boat cover, you’re going to be able to protect your boat from the elements during both trailering and storage. Will my cover mildew.

A: Mold and mildew are an inevitable concern in marine environments. That’s why high-quality boat covers, like Westland’s, are made with naturally mildew-resistant fabrics and are designed to provide superior protection against these potentially damaging fungal infestations. Westland’s covers include sewn-in ventilation, an effective precautionary measure that cuts down on mildew build-up, and provides an escape route for moisture.

For an added level of protection, we also recommend using a boat cover support pole or HangTyte to prevent water pooling on the cover. Westland’s vented boat cover support poles help to prevent water formation, which can cause sagging and mildew. When properly cleaned and maintained, your Westland cover will provide effective protection for your boat, helping to prevent both mold and mildew to keep your boat looking great.

How do I care for my cover?

A: Your Westland boat cover is made with high quality, mildew-resistant Sharkskin and Sunbrella fabrics, but mold and mildew are still inevitable in any marine environment. To keep your cover in top shape, we recommend regular cleaning and maintenance. Using a cleaning solution and retreating with water repellant once a year will help you avoid mildew growth and more time-consuming cleanings down the road.

If you do find stains or signs of mildew, it’s important to take immediate action so they do not affect the integrity of your boat cover. To tackle them, you’re going to need a tough cleaning solution, which can easily be made from items you likely already have sitting at home. A: With many covers, what you see is what you get, but that isn’t the case with a Westland boat cover. We start with a solid foundation, high quality water-resistant polyester or acrylic material that offers good breathability and a long lifespan that makes the investment worth it. Unlike the cheaper covers you can find online, which are made of lightweight cotton-poly blend and nylon materials, your Sharkskin or Sunbrella Westland boat cover is going to have UV protection and fade resistance to make it last.

How are the covers patterned?

A: Westland is the sister company of Great Lakes Boat Top, the OEM canvas replacement experts that make the original factory patterns for our Exact Fit® boat covers. Great Lakes Boat Top works directly with boat manufacturers to be able to create and provide original canvas for boat builders. We then take these patterns to create our custom and semi-custom aftermarket replacement canvas. With the canvas patterns from Great Lakes Boat Top, Westland is able to provide high quality Exact Fit® boat covers that offer both durability and reliable protection during trailering.

How durable is the fabric?

A: All of Westland’s custom boat covers are made from high quality, durable Sharkskin polyester or Sunbrella acrylic materials. These materials are the two most trusted and reliable fabrics known to withstand harsh marine and road conditions. With either option, you can travel worry-free knowing that your cover will keep your boat safe from the elements or winds on the road. We are confident your boat cover will perform for years to come, but if anything were to happen we stand by our warranties, including 3-year to 7-year warranties for Sharkskin covers and a 10-year warranty for Sunbrella covers.

Does the cover have any reinforcements?

A: All Westland covers are hand-sewn, which grants us the unique ability to add in extra layers of protection where it’s needed the most. Our custom boat covers have additional fuzzy reinforcements sewn in at critical points to help reduce the risk of tearing at typical wear points. These fuzzy reinforcements prolong the life of your cover while also protecting your boat from scratches caused by buckles and zippers.

How is the cover secured to boat?

A: Westland uses a heavy duty ¼” draw rope to achieve a tight fit with your cover, every time you use it. Unlike shock cord, which breaks down in the sun and can result in a ripped boat cover when you need it the most, the draw rope is going to maintain its integrity and keep your boat protected without loosening up with age or from the sun. Product Description

Camco's Boat Cover Support Kit is an easy-to-use telescoping support system that keeps your boat cover from sagging and allowing water to pool. This helps extends the life of your boat cover. The Boat Cover Support is self-standing with support plates on the top and bottom. The bottom support plate has a foam pad to protect the boat and stop sliding. To accommodate different styles of boats, the Boat Cover Support has an adjustable height from 30-inches to 50-inches in 2 ½-inch increments. The nylon strap assembly is 50-feet long and fits most boats up to 22-feet in length. This product is easy to install and stores compactly when not in use. Camco also makes a full line of attachments that can be purchased and used with the telescoping support pole.

A mainsail pack (also known as Stack Pack*, Lazy Pack, Mack Pack*) is popular with boats that use a lazy jack system. Simply drop the sail into the pack and zipper to close.  The mainsail pack cover is integrated with a lazy jack system (not included) to support the top of the sail pack and guide the sail neatly into place inside the cover. Product Description

SLO Sail and Canvas makes the best Sunfish sailboat covers on the market - at a great price. 

Our Sunfish top cover will fully enclose your Sunfish deck, protecting the topsides from the elements. It fits snugly below the rub rail of the hull to seal out dirt and water. The cover installs securely with an elastic cord and webbing loop tie down points.  This cover also has a cutout for the rudder gudgeon.

You can add straps (click here for more information), a bow (eye) cutout, and/or reflective tape in the upgrade menu found above. 

This deck cover is compatible with our Sunfish hull cover if you want to completely enclose your boat. We offer this cover in three different fabric types and in multiple colors. Look over the fabrics in the drop down chart below and then make a selection from the options above.  

The measurements below correspond to the measurement diagram above for the Sunfish® :

A (Length over all) = 165.5 inches

B (Transom)=24 inches

C (Max Beam)=48 inches

D (Max Beam to Bow)=77 inches

If you are unsure if your sailboat is a Sunfish®, please check these measurements on your boat. There are many Sunfish® clones out there. We have covers for some of them on our web page including the Phantom, Pointer 14, Scorpion, and the SeaGull. Also, if you find that your boat doesn’t match the measurements for any of these, just take a few photos of your boat and send them to us along with the measurements from the drawing. We should be able to make a custom cover for your boat from this information.

Great Product!

Carver Custom-Fit boat covers are made specifically for a make and year-model boat, providing the absolute best, “glove-like” fit. A custom-fit boat cover is excellent for travel*, mooring** and storage. The exceptionally conforming fit is most aerodynamic on the highway and padded reinforcements* at key stress points provide extra durability for many years of trouble-free performance.

Our Custom-Fit boat covers feature:

• Heavy duty 1/4″ draw rope encased in hem for easy installation and snug fit.
• Heavy duty boat cover tie-down kit included (12 tie-down straps).
• Sewn-in pad* for use with optional boat cover support pole (*when applicable).
• Vinyl reinforcements* sewn in at stress points (*when applicable).
• Motor coverage is provided for outboard models.

* Trailerable boat covers must be properly installed and tied down. Additional tie-down kit is recommended for covers 20′ and over. View the accessories tab for available options.
