One Design Profile: Star Class

April 27, 2013 by Sail1Design Editor Leave a Comment

“The class of champions”

In the past one hundred years, the Star has established itself at the forefront of the international sailing community. The first one-design class and core Olympic racing yacht since 1932, the Star attracts sailors of varying ages and skill levels from all over the world. With nearly 2,000 boats competing annually and over 170 active fleets world-wide, the development of the class is not likely to slow down in the foreseeable future.

star sailboat

Designed in 1911 by naval architect Francis Sweisguth, the Star was born to replace the 17-foot “Bug,” which was one of the most popular keelboats at the time. By May 1911, the first Star class regatta was held on Long Island Sound and featured five of Sweisguth’s new boats. By 1922, the Stars already numbered in the hundreds, thus leading to the foundation of the International Star Class Yacht Racing Association (ISCYRA).

star sailboat

Just under twenty-three feet in length, the hull is long and narrow and features an integrated bulb keel positioned just aft of the mast. In adherence to strict class rules, the Star weighs 1,479 pounds and is typically constructed of fiberglass. Older wooden hulls can still be found from time to time, but rarely in competition. The hull has gentle, sweeping chines leading toward the water line that not only provide a speed advantage, but attribute to the yacht’s aesthetically pleasing appearance.

During the yacht’s one hundred year history, new features have been incorporated into the design in an effort to maintain the class’ position as the pinnacle of the international racing community. The class association began asserting a control over new refinements, not to stifle progress, but to maintain a level of competition based more on the skill of the sailor than the technological advancements of the yacht. Some of the features include:

  • Adjustable jib leads
  • Crew hiking vest
  • Suction bailers
  • Unique, circular boom vang
  • Whisker pole
  • Strict class association sail measurements

One of the interesting features of the Star is the hiking vest. The vest is worn by the crew and allows him or her to adopt a unique hiking position by “drooping” their body over the side of the hull. In addition to the vest, the Star also features a circular vang system. Designed for the star, but eventually adopted other classes, the circular vang system provides a safe means to deal with the enormous loads of the yacht’s large sail plan.

star sailboat

Numerous champions of the sailing world spent time sailing the Star and hold prestigious international titles. A Star Class World Championship is often considered on the most coveting trophies in all of sailing. Despite the high level of competition at top tier events, the Star also offers opportunities to local and amateur sailors. The depth of skill level and opportunity is unrivaled by any other racing class. Sailors looking to compete at the local level can often gain experience with the boat and progress up through the levels of competition, not to mention enjoy the thrill of sailing such an incredible boat.

Get involved with the Star Class! If you want to begin racing there are plenty of Stars out there looking for a good home. Thanks to the regulation in design features, many older Stars perform just as well as their newer counterparts and run at affordable prices. If you are a former college sailor or young professional looking to stay active at the highest level of competition or looking for a fast boat to sail at the local level perhaps a Star should be your next boat…

Sadly, in 2011, it was decided that the keelboats would be removed as an Olympic class following the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Recently rumors began to circulate of comeback for the 2016 Games; however these were quashed almost immediately by the ISCYRA. Despite being struck from the Olympic books the Star class has showed no signs of losing momentum. Huge turnouts for Barcardi Race Week and the 2012 Star Winter Series appear to have breathed new life into the yacht. With hundreds of local regattas scheduled this year and dozens at the internationals and championship level, the Star class remains strong

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The well-established American and Canadian team did it, in a week of light and unstable wind

Vancouver, BC (June 3, 2023) - On this final day of the 2023 Star North American Championship, hosted by Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, the 30 teams woke to sunny clear skies with the hope of early westerlies and completing two races in English Bay. However, as the saying goes, “it never does this here”, Mother Nature had other plans.

The race committee expected a flood tide all day with breeze coming in at 10-12 knots from a bearing of 260. The low pressure system offshore thwarted expectations, the easterly breeze deteriorated as the west breeze materialized to the left of 260 and week below 10 knots.

Vancouver, BC (June 2, 2023) - The third day of the 2023 Star North American Championship, hosted by Royal Vancouver Yacht Club on English Bay, proved to be another day of patience and frustration. The morning was cloud-less blue skies with hope of the westerlies coming in early to be able to complete the two races scheduled for the day. However, the forecast south-southwesterly for the greater English Bay materialized as a northerly, locally known as “ Where the wind goes to die.”

Day two of the Volvo Penta 2023 Star North American Championship, hosted by Royal Vancouver Yacht Club in English Bay started as a completely different day from yesterday. Sailors and Race Committee did not have to wait through an overcast easterly wind blowing in “the wrong direction”. Instead, today the predominant westerly was filling into English Bay by 11 o’clock with sunny skies and the race area was ready for an on-time start at 1205.

Callum Turner has been cast in the lead role of the series adaptation of the William Gibson novel “ Neuromancer ” at Apple TV+ , Variety has learned.

The series was originally announced in February. Per the official description, the 10-episode drama follows “a damaged, top-rung super-hacker named Case (Turner) who is thrust into a web of digital espionage and high stakes crime with his partner Molly, a razor-girl assassin with mirrored eyes, aiming to pull a heist on a corporate dynasty with untold secrets.”

Popular on Variety

He is repped by WME, Curtis Brown Group, and Johnson, Shapiro, Slewett & Kole.

“Neurmancer” hails from co-creators Graham Roland and JD Dillard. Roland will also serve as showrunner, while Dillard will direct the pilot. Both are executive producers along with: Gibson; David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Matt Thunell for Skydance Television; Anonymous Content; Drake, Adel “Future” Nur and Jason Shrier for DreamCrew Entertainment; and Zack Hayden. Skydance Television will co-produce with Anonymous Content.

“Neuromancer” was Gibson’s debut novel that helped birth the cyberpunk genre. It was first published in 1984 and went on to receive a Hugo Award, a Nebula Award, and the Philip K. Dick Award. The book led Gibson to publish two follow-ups, “Count Zero” and “Mona Lisa Overdrive.” There have been various attempts over the years to adapt the book into a film though none have ultimately moved forward.

Trailblazing sonar device will be in thousands of minnesota boats for fishing opener.

Dennis Anderson

Forward-facing sonar — which only a few years ago seemed too futuristic to impact Minnesota fish and fishing, and anyway seemed too costly for most anglers to acquire for use in their boats and, in winter, on frozen lakes — now is nearly everywhere and is likely to be used by tens of thousands to target walleyes when open water season begins in a few weeks.

If you doubt that, check out specific angling groups on Facebook. One for Garmin LiveScope forward-facing imaging users has about 135,000 members. Another for competing Lowrance ActiveTarget units has 30,000.

Put another way, the future is here, and there's no going back.

Developed first by Garmin, forward-facing sonar allows anglers to fish only where fish are and to direct baits specifically to the located fish.

Pick a day in July or August, when walleyes tend to suspend in a water column, either to seek comfortable temperatures or to find baitfish. Located by anglers in a boat using forward-facing sonar, the fish can be targeted by the anglers as they hang back in their boat 30 or 40 feet from the fish, casting leech- or nightcrawler-baited jigs rigged with slip bobbers.

If the anglers' casts fly errantly, they can re-cast, because the baits' locations relative to the location of the fish often appear on the sonar's display.

Employing forward-facing sonar, Twin Cities angler Cory Villaume, 40, has made countless similar casts to walleyes. Like other Minnesota anglers in recent years, he's ponied up the $2,500-$3,500 that forward-facing sonar units cost.

Villaume's goal isn't to keep more fish; he releases almost all the fish he catches. Instead, he uses forward-facing sonar to increase his fishing enjoyment while expanding his knowledge of fish and fish behavior. To keep up with fishing technology developments, he stays attuned to social media and particularly to YouTube, where how-to videos by knowledgeable forward-facing imaging users are ubiquitous.

Here, Villaume answers key questions about forward-facing sonar.

Q: How difficult, or easy, is it to learn to use these units?

A: It takes a little while to figure out. But generally, it's easy.

Q: What's your sense of how popular they are among Minnesota anglers?

A: I know more people who have them than don't.

Q: Can their widespread use by anglers negatively affect fisheries?

A: It's possible. Panfish are particularly vulnerable, I think, perhaps crappies most of all. Especially in winter and later in summer when they suspend, you can find them with this new sonar, whereas before, without it, locating them was hard. That said, sonar doesn't kill fish; people do. Knowing how to catch and release fish safely is important, and everyone should practice it. Also, in my view, all fish limits should be lower.

Q: How is sonar used to fish walleyes?

A: Lots of ways. Most importantly, it allows you to find walleyes, then stay away from them so you don't spook them and cast to them from a distance. It also has enhanced the use of artificial baits, which are more useful and effective now for this type of fishing. Plastics, for instance, I use quite a bit, and Berkley is even making an artificial bait designed for use with forward-facing sonar.

Q: What has using the new sonar taught you about fish that you didn't know?

A: That's the best part: You learn a lot about fish locations and fish behavior — things that before you had to guess at. Boats spook fish, for example. Maybe it's the sound of a motor. Or, on clear days, the shadow a boat throws. A lot of sonar users believe the units themselves emit a sound wave that can spook fish.

Q: Can these units help you distinguish fish species? Or the relative sizes of fish?

A: Perhaps with big fish, like muskies, you could tell comparable sizes. And by location, you can generally guess whether fish you're seeing are walleyes or, for example, crappies.

Q: How did you become aware of forward-facing sonar?

A: About four years ago a buddy asked me to run out to Lac qui Parle to fish crappies, and he had a Garmin LiveScope we used to locate them in midday. We couldn't drill holes on top of them, because they spooked. So we flanked them with other holes. Again, we released almost all we caught, and this was in shallow water, so they did well. But if you weren't conservation-minded, you could hurt these fish. Anyway, on my way home I said, 'I've got to get one of those.' Now I have two in my boat.

Q: What's the chance fish will bite once you find them with the new sonar?

A: If they want to bite, they'll move a few feet to get a bait. You can watch them do that. But if they don't want to bite, you can't make them. That's the educational part. On Rainy Lake one evening last summer, we marked 100 walleyes but got only four to bite. Also on Green Bay two weeks ago, we saw a lot of fish but got only nine in two days. As always in fishing, it matters a lot how clear the water is, whether it's sunny or cloudy, and whether the wind is flat or breezy. Sometimes, for whatever reason, they just won't bite.

Three men have been rescued by the Coastguard after their fishing vessel collided with a tanker just off the Scottish mainland.

Police Scotland say they were informed of the crash between Ardrossan and Arran, North Ayrshire at about 4pm on Thursday.

The fishing boat sank after the collision and none of the three men who were rescued are said to have been injured.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch was notified, Police Scotland said.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) said lifeboats from its Arran and Troon stations rescued the men, who transferred them to the Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS).

An RAF Poseidon aircraft also attended the scene, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: ‘Around 4pm on Thursday, 25 April 2024, we were made aware of a collision at sea involving a fishing vessel and a tanker in the Firth of Clyde, near Ardrossan.

‘HM Coastguard rescued three men and transported them to land.

‘There are no reported injuries.

‘The fishing vessel sank and the Marine Accident Investigation Branch has been notified.’

A spokesman for the RNLI said: “On Thursday 25 April, Troon and Arran RNLI lifeboats launched to a fishing vessel in distress between the Isle of Arran and the Ayrshire coast.

‘The casualties were taken back to Troon lifeboat station and transferred into the care of the ambulance service.’

Ferry operator CalMac announced on X, formerly known as Twitter, that its MV Isle of Arran ferry was delayed as a result.

HM Coastguard and the SAS have been contacted for comment.

TUNIS, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Tunisian National Guard reported on Thursday the recovery of five bodies and the rescue of five other fishermen following the sinking of their vessel off the coast of Monastir province.

In a coordinated effort, the Naval Guard and the Army of the Sea retrieved the casualties and survivors 29 nautical miles from Monastir's coastline. The statement, released on the National Guard's Facebook page, detailed the joint operation conducted on Wednesday.

The survivors were promptly transported to the port of Mahdia and subsequently received medical care at a local hospital. Meanwhile, search operations continue for one fisherman who remains unaccounted for.

The incident was first brought to attention when the control tower at the port of Mahdia received a distress signal about a fishing boat succumbing to a water leak. A joint response team, supported by a helicopter, was immediately dispatched to the location.

The National Guard has not provided additional details regarding the circumstances leading to the tragic event.

8-year-old girl, 5-year-old boy dead after car crashes into birthday party in Berlin Twp.

Berlin Township — A suspected drunken driver crashed her vehicle through a building where a children's birthday party was taking place Saturday afternoon, killing an 8-year-old girl and her 5-year-old brother while injuring more than a dozen others at a boat club in Monroe County's Berlin Township.

The incident occurred at approximately 3 p.m. at the Swan Boat Club in the 6000 block of Brancheau, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. Victims were taken to several area hospitals.

The 66-year-old female driver’s car landed 25 feet into the building after crashing through the north wall, Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough said. The woman, whom authorities did not identify Saturday night, was taken into police custody on suspicion of operating while intoxicated causing death. She is lodged at the Monroe County Jail. Further charges are likely, Goodnough said.

“The scene was described by first responders as extremely chaotic, with high levels of emotions of those directly involved and those who witnessed this horrific incident,” Goodnough said at a press conference Saturday night.

Ambulances and a survival flight helicopter were seen on Brancheau near the boat club as visibly distressed people arrived at the scene Saturday afternoon.

In all, 15 people, including children and adults, were injured. Emergency responders transferred three children and six adults to local hospitals in serious conditions. Several others were taken to hospitals in private vehicles, Goodnough said.

Officials received information that the woman may have been at Verna’s Tavern earlier. Authorities closed the bar, which was less than 5 miles from the boat club, for the day and were in the process of executing a search warrant to learn more about the day’s business, Goodnough said.

The incident at the boat club remains an active investigation as officials continue to process evidence at the scene, he said.

Responders who assisted at the scene included fire department officials from Berlin Township, Frenchtown Township, Monroe Township and Rockwood. Monroe Community and Huron Valley Community ambulances, in addition to two University of Michigan Survival Lifelight helicopters, were also at the scene, he said.
