Types of Boat Insurance
Boat insurance policies typically offer three primary types of coverage
1. Liability Coverage:
2. collision coverage:.
Collision coverage is a vital safeguard for your boat following an accident. It empowers your insurance provider to shoulder the cost of repairing your vessel. Some insurance companies treat collision coverage as a distinct component of their policies, while others incorporate it within comprehensive boat insurance plans. Regardless, the coverage amount depends on your boat's declared value as specified in your policy. Boat insurance collision coverage offers protection against a range of accidents, whether you're at fault or not. This includes collisions with other boats, collisions with underwater obstacles or rocks, or damage to someone else's property.
3. Comprehensive Coverage:
Comprehensive boat insurance offers extensive protection for your vessel beyond collision scenarios. It covers risks such as theft, vandalism, and fire damage. Additionally, it typically provides coverage for potential damage from natural disasters like hurricanes, floods, and hail. However, the specific extent of protection against these hazards can vary among insurance carriers. Comprehensive coverage is often bundled with collision coverage, making it uncommon to obtain one without the other. This combined coverage ensures comprehensive protection for your boat, whether it's in use or not.

Laying Up in Grenada for Hurricane Season
Where do you hide when summer storms threaten? (published September 2016)
If you need a seasonal respite from cruising, the lovely island of Grenada is just the ticket. Just about 12 degrees north latitude, this mountainous and lush island hides natural hurricane holes among the bays of its southern coast. You can leave the boat while you fly home, or enjoy the local hospitality and a plethora of yacht services if you stay through the summer.
Most of the boatyards provide haul-out and tie-down services and some will undertake project management while you travel, and the marinas offer absentee yacht management and guardianage. Specialty yacht services abound. You can get composite or woodwork done, inspect rigging, repair sails and canvas, overhaul your engine or get a bottom inspection.
Turbulence Sails at Spice Island Marine will care for your rigging while Clarkes Court Boatyard and Marina boasts a 242-ton boat lift rumored to be the largest in the Caribbean. Prickly Bay Marina offers official clearance facilities and a bandshell that hosts yoga classes, live entertainment and weekly bingo for big prizes like a whole pig.
Simon at Navicomm is rumored to be the best electronics guy along with Herve at Grenada Marine, which is also a dealer for Raymarine. Palm Tree Marine is recommended for mechanical and electrical work and Underwater Solutions is the outfit to call for diver services.
Provisioning is excellent from large supermarkets to small local grocers. One highlight destination is the Meat and Meet at Whisper Cove Marina. Not only does the marina have eight berths and a few hurricane moorings out front, but Gilles, the butcher, is known for offering the best meat, sausages and smoked fish on the island from the air conditioned shop behind the bar.
If you plan to ride it out aboard but aren’t keen on marinas or hauling out, one well-sheltered lagoon is Port Egmont. With a dogleg entrance and 20-30 feet of water, the small bay has good mud holding ground and is surrounded by mangroves to tie off your lines.
Sometimes the end of the season means the end of the adventure and it’s time to sell up and move on. You can sail the boat back to U.S. shores or pay a delivery crew to do so. Alternately, you can list the boat where she lies. One option is to engage Chris Rundlett, the Grenada onsite representative of the Multihull Company and their 5 Oceans division that works with boats of all shapes and sizes.
Grenada is considered to be technically below the hurricane belt. Nobody told Hurricane Ivan in 2004 that stomped across the island and did major damage before wreaking havoc on the rest of the Caribbean and Florida. You should check with your insurance company before making Grenada your hurricane home.
That said, whiling away five months on the Isle of Spice is a great way to take a break, manage boat chores and enjoy a slice of paradise while you wait it out. The best part? Afterwards, you’ll still be at the center of beautiful cruising grounds so it’s easy to slip the dock lines and continue the dream.

Yacht Services & Facilities on Grenada & Carriacou
Grenada, together with its sister islands Carriacou and Petite Martinique, is the southernmost island group in the Leeward Islands in the Eastern Caribbean.
In recent years, Camper & Nicholson's Port Louis Marina has been developed to cater for the requirements of the world's Superyachts whilst remaining an attractive facility for those of us with cruising boats of more modest proportions.
On the south coast, the new development at Clarke's Court Boatyard & Marina has haulout facilities for large multihulls and is currently offering extremely competitive deals to challenge other established yacht service facilities.
Grenada is a great place to get things done!

Grenada charges prison escapees with murder of American couple missing since alleged yacht hijacking
T hree inmates who escaped from prison in Grenada have been charged with killing two Americans after allegedly hijacking their yacht last month to flee to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, police said Thursday.
The Royal Granada Police Force said in a statement that Ron Mitchell, Atiba Stanisclaus and Trevon Robertson were each charged with two counts of capital murder over the presumed deaths of Americans Ralph Hendry and Kathleen Brandel.
The three suspects have also been charged with escaping lawful custody, housebreaking, robbery and kidnapping. Stanislaus was separately charged with one count of rape.
The latest police update did not make clear who Stanislaus is accused of raping and did not provide information on whether the bodies of the couple had been recovered.
Hendry and Brandel, based in Virginia, were living out a long-held dream of cruising the Caribbean in their sailing yacht called Simplicity, to Antigua when they went missing, according to their yacht club, the Salty Dawg Sailing Association.
Their vessel was found abandoned in neighboring St. Vincent and the Grenadines on February 21, with the husband and wife nowhere to be found, the yacht club said.
Authorities in Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines launched joint investigations to track down the suspects who allegedly left behind a violent scene on the missing couple’s yacht, including blood stains.
Last week, Grenada police commissioner Don McKenzie said in a news conference the couple was likely thrown overboard during the hijacking, and information suggests the escapees “disposed of the occupants” while traveling between Grenada and St. Vincent, about 80 miles away.
Their alleged killers committed “several criminal acts including bodily harm to the couple” while sailing, the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force said last week. When authorities eventually recovered the yacht, the scene was “consistent with signs of violence,” the police force said.
All three suspects made their first court appearance in St. George’s Magistrate’s Court in Grenada on Thursday and were remanded to prison. They are due back in court on March 27.
CNN has reached out to the police for more information.
‘They brought light’
The couple’s disappearance has left family and loved ones reeling.
Hendry’s son, Bryan Hendry, and Brandel’s son, Nick Buro, released a joint statement last month, remembering their parents for living with love, faith and sailing.
“Ralph and Kathy lived a life that most of us can only dream of, sailing the eastern coast of the United States, living on their home Simplicity, making friends with everyone they encountered, singing, dancing and laughing with friends and family – that’s who Ralph and Kathy were and that’s how they will be remembered in our hearts,” the statement read.
“If we have learned anything from this tragic event, it’s that we know they left this world in a better place than it was before they were born.”
Buro and Bryan Hendry called their parents the strongest people they will ever know, saying they “strive to be even half as wonderful as them.”
“While the end of their life may have been dark, they brought light, and that light will never be extinguished from the hearts and minds of the people who knew, loved and cared so deeply about them,” the statement read.
Buro said his mother and stepfather were veteran boaters who had been planning the trip – their first cruise of the Caribbean – for years.
“They were super careful to be safe all the time,” Buro said. “Everywhere they went everything they did, safety was their top, top concern. So this unfortunate accident, I think, it came out of nowhere for them.”
The couple sold their home and bought Simplicity years ago, throwing themselves into an enthralling life on the water, he said.
“It was their home. Everything they had, they owned, was on that boat. It was their life,” he said. “Kathy worked her whole life and then retired. Ralph worked in financial services and continued to work from the boat. But really what they did was … choose a lifestyle that most of us would never imagine could be done. And they loved every minute of it and they saw many parts of the world and just lived a life of joy and love.”
CNN’s Abel Alvarado, Polo Sandoval, Elizabeth Wolfe and Sahar Akbarzai contributed reporting.

3 escaped inmates from Grenada charged with murder after US sailing couple vanishes
Police transport escaped prisoners Atiba Stanislaus, far left, and Trevon Robertson who are handcuffed together in Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Monday, March 4, 2024. The yacht “Simplicity”, that officials say was hijacked by three escaped prisoners with two people aboard, is docked at the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Coastguard Service Calliaqua Base, in Calliaqua, St. Vincent, Friday, Feb. 23, 2024. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Three escaped inmates from the eastern Caribbean island of Grenada were charged in the killing of a U.S. couple whose catamaran they hijacked, police said Thursday.
Ron Mitchell, a 30-year-old sailor; Atiba Stanislaus, a 25-year-old farmer; and Trevon Robertson, a 23-year-old unemployed man, were charged with capital murder, escaping lawful custody, housebreaking, robbery and kidnapping. Stanislaus also was charged with one count of rape, according to a statement from the Royal Grenada Police Force.
The men appeared in court on Thursday and were ordered held in prison until their hearing in late March.
They were accused of escaping from a police holding cell on Feb. 18 and hijacking a catamaran owned by Ralph Henry and Kathy Brandel while they were aboard. Authorities said they believe the couple was thrown overboard as the suspects sailed to nearby St. Vincent, where they were arrested on Feb. 21.
The three men were ordered deported from St. Vincent on Monday.
The nonprofit Salty Dawg Sailing Association described Hendry and Brandel as “veteran cruisers” who participated in last year’s Caribbean Rally from Hampton, Virginia, to Antigua, and had planned to spend the winter cruising in the eastern Caribbean.
Their bodies have not been found.

How to Sell Yacht Insurance Amidst a Rising Tide
The market for yacht insurance has hardened in recent years, due to the frequency and severity of catastrophic (CAT) claims. Widespread losses incurred along the West Coast of Florida and the Atlantic Coast from Hurricane Ian in 2022, for example, resulted in more than $112 billion in damages. Because of catastrophes such as Ian, many watercraft insurance carriers – both admitted and non-admitted – have pulled out of the market in coastal areas.
For carriers that continue to provide coverage in hurricane-prone states, premium costs have doubled or tripled. The increased coverage costs and the difficulty in securing boat coverage has deterred some from purchasing them – but not all. Brokers today are challenged with securing coverage for their high-net-worth clients even in high-risk areas.
In this market segment, there are three tiers of coverage for high-end boats, based on cost and size of the boat:
- Top tier boats have values of $2 million or greater, are at least 65-feet long or larger and must have a full-time captain.
- Middle tier boats are valued between $350,000 and $2 million and are between 35-feet and 65-feet long and the owner-operator is typically the full-time captain.
- First tier boats cost up to $350,000 and are 15-feet to 35-feet long.
Incidentally, middle tier boats are the most difficult to secure coverage for, due to the number of high claims filed and the types of boats covered within this tier. Premiums can run comparatively higher than other tiers as a result.
What can brokers do to help their insureds?
Much of your focus when searching for yacht coverage for clients should begin with a discussion on the age of the craft. Advise your clients that older boats – especially those 10 years and older – are more costly to cover and are harder to insure.
Here are six tips to help guide brokers as they advise boat-owning clients on how to mitigate risk and secure coverage.
- Don’t jump ship.
Sometimes the purchase of a larger or more expensive boat can make obtaining coverage difficult. If a client considers upgrading from a 25-foot craft to a 40-foot one, for example, it’s prudent for you to let them know that they will need a captain’s sign off and premium costs will increase. That is, if the carrier accepts the risk in the first place.
- Be proactive about obtaining insurance.
Advise clients to start looking for insurance the day they begin shopping for a boat. Other than first-tier purchases, same day quote-and-bind processes are a thing of the past. Securing coverage for middle- and top-tier crafts can now take up to a week.
In addition, inform boat owners that many insurers require them to hire a captain for 50 hours of training if piloting a craft larger than 10 feet to 12 feet in size, or depending on the size of the boat, they may have to hire a full-time captain to place coverage.
- Have a hurricane plan in place.
Most carriers require boat owners have a plan should a hurricane occur. Advise owners they may have to move their boats inland or to a facility that’s rated to withstand hurricanes. If domiciled in a hurricane-prone state, owners may have to store their boats in a CAT-4 or CAT-5 rated facility when not in use.
- Don’t be an absentee owner.
Advise clients about the perils associated with absentee ownership. Clients who live in a state other than where the boat is stored are considered absentee owners. In the current market, this significantly limits the number of carriers that will actually extend coverage to out-of-state boat owners.
- Stay mindful of wind coverages and exclusions.
In the past year or so, carriers have begun to exclude some wind coverage; an exclusion that applies to named hurricanes or tropical storms. In the case of routine storms, wind coverage does apply. Marine coverage is not needed for those without bank loans. However, financing boat purchases will require owners to carry wind coverage and proof of such protection before closing.
- Maintenance matters more than ever.
Inform clients that regular maintenance is imperative for reducing risk and should be considered a part of their insurance strategy. Scheduled oil changes are vital but inboard motors require a closer inspection of parts such as impellers. A worn impeller can cause overheating and a failure to follow scheduled maintenance requirements can result in a denied claim. Along similar lines, fire and safety equipment should be evaluated to ensure those systems are in proper working order.

Three men who had escaped from a prison in Grenada and were accused of hijacking an American couple’s yacht to flee have been charged with their murder, the police said on Thursday.
The couple, Ralph Hendry, 66, and Kathy Brandel, 71, went missing while sailing off the coast of Grenada . They had been spending the winter cruising in the Caribbean in their catamaran called Simplicity, which was found abandoned in neighboring St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Feb. 21.
There was no indication in the latest police statement that the bodies of the couple had been recovered as of Thursday.
Trevon Robertson, 23; Atiba Stanisclaus, 25; and Ron Mitchell, 30, face two counts of “capital murder by intentionally causing the death of Ralph Hendry and Kathleen Brandel,” the Royal Grenada Police Force said.
The authorities from police forces in Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines have given different ages and name spellings for the escapees.
The men were also charged with escaping lawful custody, housebreaking, robbery and two counts of kidnapping; Mr. Stanisclaus is also facing a rape charge, the police said, but no details were offered on those accusations. The three men made their first court appearance on Thursday, and are due back on March 27. The Royal Grenada Police Force did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The police had said in a statement released on Feb. 22 that three men who escaped from a prison in Grenada on Feb. 18 and made their way to St. Vincent using a yacht that had been docked in the St. George area of Grenada.
The prisoners were recaptured on Feb. 21, the same day that the couple’s yacht was found. At the time, the police said they were “currently working on leads that suggest that the two occupants of the yacht may have been killed in the process.”
At a news conference on Feb. 26 , Commissioner Don McKenzie of the Royal Grenada Police Force that “information suggests that, while traveling between Grenada and St. Vincent, they disposed of the occupants.”
During a Feb. 26 news conference , Junior Simmons, superintendent of the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force, said the joint investigation into the disappearance with Grenada police was ongoing, and he said the couple was presumed dead.
The investigation revealed that while sailing from Grenada, “the suspects committed several criminal acts including bodily harm to the couple,” he said.
The couple, who were married for 27 years, were “veteran cruisers,” according to the Salty Dawg Sailing Association , a nonprofit that brings together a community of sailors engaged in long-distance cruising on their boats. The couple were longtime members, the organization said in a statement, and “they both contributed to building the S.D.S.A.”
In a joint family statement posted on the association’s website on Feb. 27, Nick Buro, the son of Ms. Brandel, and Bryan Hendry, the son of Mr. Hendry, said that “if we have learned anything from this tragic event, it’s that we know they left this world in a better place than it was before they were born.”
“Ralph and Kathy lived a life that most of us can only dream of,” the message said. “Sailing the eastern coast of the United States, living on their home Simplicity, making friends with everyone they encountered, singing, dancing and laughing with friends and family — that’s who Ralph and Kathy were and that’s how they will be remembered in our hearts.”

Connecticut wants to penalize insurers for backing fossil-fuel projects
A new bill could impose a fee on any company insuring a fossil-fuel project in the state..
The nation’s insurance industry has gone haywire in recent years amid a succession of floods , fires , and other climate-fueled disasters . These catastrophes have forced carriers to pay out billions in claims, and many have responded by raising premiums in disaster-prone states like Florida and Oregon or leaving certain markets altogether.
But many of these companies also provide coverage for fossil fuel projects, like pipelines and natural gas power plants, that would never be built without their backing. This gives the insurance industry a unique role on both sides of the climate crisis: insurers are helping make the problem worse by underwriting the very projects that warm the earth even as they bear the costs of mounting climate disasters and pass them on to customers.
Legislation in Connecticut, the capital of the American insurance industry and home to several of its largest carriers, could make insurers pay for that contradiction. If passed, the bill, which just cleared a committee vote in the state senate, would move toward imposing a fee for any fossil-fuel projects companies insure in state. That revenue would go into a public resilience fund that could underwrite sea walls and urban flood protection measures.
“It’s important to begin to hold [insurers] accountable for how they’ve played it both ways in terms of climate change,” said Tom Swan, the executive director of Connecticut Citizen Action Group, an economic justice nonprofit that has joined several environmental organizations in lobbying the legislature to pass the bill along with several environmental organizations. “People are seeing skyrocketing rates, or they’re pulling out of different areas, and they continue to underwrite and invest in fossil fuels at a pace much greater than their colleagues across the globe,” he said.

The group pushed a more aggressive proposal last year that would have charged insurers a 5 percent fee for any fossil fuel coverage they issued in the United States, but that bill failed after critics raised several legal questions. In particular, the industry argued that the Constitution’s interstate commerce clause prohibits taxing a company’s out-of-state business.
The new version, attached as an amendment to a climate resilience bill proposed by Democratic Governor Ned Lamont, would only require the state to produce a proposal for an insurance mechanism. The surcharge would apply only to fossil-fuel projects these companies insure in Connecticut, avoiding that constitutional challenge.
The assessment would apply not only to new pipelines and fuel terminals, which require ample insurance to attract lenders and investors, but to current coverage for existing infrastructure as well. This means anyone covering the state’s dozens of oil- and gas-fueled power plants would be contributing to the resilience fund. A report from Connecticut Citizen Action Group and several other environmental nonprofits found that the state’s insurers have together invested $221 billion in fossil fuels.
Supporters argue the reduced fee would still raise tens or hundreds of millions of dollars for climate resilience. Connecticut received about $318 million in FEMA disaster aid between 2011 and 2021, or about $149 in spending per capita, according to the climate adaptation nonprofit Rebuild by Design. That puts the state well below disaster-prone locales like Louisiana, which saw $1,736 in federal disaster aid per capita, but far above those like Delaware that haven’t experienced a major disaster in the past decade.
Eric George, the president of the Insurance Association of Connecticut, the state’s largest insurance trade association, said the organization would “strongly oppose” any surcharge, but added that he was still studying the bill.
The legislation comes as other states, including Vermont and Maryland, introduce “polluters pay” bills to hold oil producers accountable for climate damages. Connecticut’s proposed law is an iteration of that effort focused on an area where state regulators wield significant influence, said Risalat Khan of the Sunrise Project, a nonprofit focused on energy transition policy.
“People are very directly seeing their premiums rise, in relation to climate disasters,” he said. “There’s a direct question there of, why aren’t state level regulators using more of their power to take local action?”
The significance of this financing mechanism could vary from state to state, says Benjamin Keys, a professor of economics at the University of Pennsylvania and an expert on climate insurance risks.
“One major issue is that the fuels are collected and burned everywhere, but the pain of natural disasters is local in nature,” he said. Because of that, he questioned whether the financing mechanism “would be feasible for all communities to emulate, because many places have [lots of] disasters hit, but very little in the way of fossil fuel production.” Florida, for instance, doesn’t have much more fossil-fuel infrastructure than Connecticut, but faces extreme weather and other catastrophes far more often.
Even though the legislation is weaker than the previous version, supporters say passing it in the home of the country’s insurance industry would send a message to big companies that are still underwriting oil and gas projects.
“I think it’s a good policy, but from a narrative-setting perspective, it’s really important,” said Swan.
