Tryst – A New 10-Foot Dinghy Trimaran Design

Multihull designer Richard Woods sent me the following info a couple weeks ago about Tryst – a new 10-foot trimaran design. This new 10-foot dinghy tri is based on his original plans for a 10ft two sheet plywood dinghy called Duo . In other words, Tryst is a further development of Duo , and both versions of this small boat look pretty neat.

As you know, I don’t just design small trimarans, I have a large range of catamarans, power and sail as well. What you may not know is that I also have a few sailing/rowing dinghies.

the latest one is a 10ft two sheet plywood dinghy called Duo, which you can see by clicking here .

Recently, and in part due to demand, I have drawn a modified Duo, adding longer beams and small outriggers. I call the resulting trimaran the Tryst . The first set of plans has been sold to a builder in Australia, while I should be sailing my own Tryst soon – as you can see in the webpage linked to above, I am already sailing a Duo.

The 10ft Tryst trimaran is a variation of the Duo dinghy .

Originally I was going to call it “Trist”, but the Norwegian speakers amongst you will know that’s not a good idea. Tryst is an appropriate name I feel, as the etymology of “Tryst” is a variation of “to make safe, secure.”

When sailing my Strike 15 trimaran I have found that I can almost keep both outriggers out of the water all the time, providing I am not overpowered, which happens frequently on the Strike 15!

In comparison, with it’s much smaller rig, the Duo is under-canvassed most of the time, so there should have no problem sailing with both outriggers clear of the water. What I find nice about the Strike 15 is not so much the stability gained from the lee outrigger, but the fact that the boat cannot capsize to windward if I am hiking hard and the wind drops.

The same thing will apply to the Tryst and I expect that most of the time skilled sailors will sail it in monohull dinghy mode. Less experienced/agile sailors however, will welcome the extra security of the buoyancy “out there doing it”

Having said that, the Tryst outriggers are long, narrow and deep. That is because they are not “training wheels” but hulls in their own right. If they were too short and fat they would generate a lot of drag, even if they had the same buoyancy as the longer ones.

The crossbeams fit onto the Duo wings and short outriggers bolt to the beams. This adds stability for little extra weight, especially as all the panels for the outriggers can be made from one sheet of 3 or 4mm ply With a bigger, stayed, rig the Tryst will be competitive in the Italian 10ft class.

What Is a Trimaran?

A trimaran is a multi hulled sailboat with three individual hulls; the main hull ( vaka ) and a pair of outrigger hulls ( amas ). These smaller outrigger hulls are attached to the main hull using beams.

While trimarans have a rich history dating back nearly four millennia, these types of sailboats have only gained popularity in the late 1900s and early 2000s.

Trimarans are primarily used as personal boats for sailing enthusiasts or racing. As with all things, to find out which is the best we need to understand what it will be used for. There is a big difference in requirements between a boat used for day sailing compared to offshore around the world sailing.
