This site is primarily intended to help those building a one off IOM (International One Metre) or a similar radio controlled model yacht. Essentially the hull and decks can either by built in Glass / Epoxy throughout, or in Wood - typically Cedar or Balsa (balsa needs glass sheathing), and with a very thin ply deck.

Where you are intending to build a few similar boats, for example a group of you want to build the same design, a female mould of some form should be made. This is not dealt with here.

Set Up and Sail

The V11 detailing is simple but effective. In conjunction with the V11 Set Up Guide, assembly is straight forward, and vital tuning information assists you to quickly understand and master your V11's potential

IMG_6609.jpg

Vickers RC Sailing build processes are well refined and thought out.

Our boats are light, stiff and clever,  keeping to a simple and effective philosophy around detailing

The V11 design is a hull, foils and bulb package to compliment the full range of conditions experienced in RC Sailing. The hull design has full volume forward and features the familiar chines and tumblehome of the modern IOM for reduced weight and windage, as well as good tracking characteristics. The V11 features our peaked style foredeck for efficient water shedding when buried downwind and a geometrically strong shape for the forestay and mast ram areas.

Foils are slippery and strategically positioned with the rig to balance the yacht. The V11s forgiving balance through the wind range, allows the skipper to focus on the race at hand, and not rely on micro steering to maintain a consistent VMG.

The rig sits solid on its deck stepped mast step, complimented at deck level with an encapsulating mast gate arrangement over the mast ram. The rudder tube is rigidly supported inside the moulded servo tray.

Hull construction is from E-Glass Fibreglass Cloth and High Grade Epoxy Resin.

The foils are Carbon Fibre Layup with High Grade Epoxy Resin.

Paint system is a 2 pot Urethane and the boat is thoroughly post cured before finishing.

The V11 Features-

Plastic main hatch access.

Ready to accept RMG Winch and Standard sized Rudder Servo

Bow Bumper attached.

Hardware is Bantock including an adjustable mast ram, adjustable mainsheet post and tiller arm.

All necessary fittings attached for standing and running rigging.

The V11 comes out of our workshop in Beach Haven, Auckland New Zealand and is ready to accept rigs and electrics.

We also make sails that can be added to the order, or ordered separately.

So hit the enquiry button to discuss delivery times and options.

We are ready to help.

IMG_6638.jpg

Essential to success in sailing comes down to the  Rig and how it is set up and tuned. The V11 comes with a Set Up Guide that covers all the expert information needed to set up like the guns. It specifies the hardware, construction and tuning information to get your rig and sails set up and sailing near optimum straight off the bat, so you can enjoy your racing and punch above your weight.

Include Sets of sails from Vickers RC Sailing and enhance the experience.

R/c and model yacht design, plans, boats, sails..

New Equinox IOM   Plan : The Equinox is a variant of the Ellipsis… IOM.  The basic  design was produced initially as a 3D printed project that never eventuated for various reasons. Two prototypes were built including a 3D printed boat which was built by John Taylor in the UK.  The design incorporates several features of some of the newer IOM shapes including a fuller higher bow profile and wider stern. The design is well balanced and well behaved like the Ellipsis and also should be as easy to plank from wood.

Hulls an components for this design are now available. See IOM COMPONENTS  Page.

After payment is made. I will email you the pdf file.

Please ask If you require another format: DXF, or DWG, 2D or 3D or printed paper plan, postage extra.

Ellipsis IOM 2017

Ellipsis… 2017 IOM is the 2017 fresh approach to IOM shapes. The chine is gone, The tumble home is gone, but the volume distribution and excellent hull balance remain. This is a powerful low wetted area, narrow waterline shape. Two alternate deck designs are offered. 10 section Laser cut sections less 3mm for planking are included.

Hulls an components for this design are now available. See IOM YACHTS Page.

Some IOM bulbs from the new moulds .

New IOM bulb moulds cnc-machined

Jari made these new IOM bulb-moulds over the weekend. CNC-milled in aluminium. Circular cross-section with a NACA0010-34 profile (similar to my 2005 design ), length ca 360mm. Designed with a central stiffening brass rod. Check out rcyachttech .webs.com for more cnc-machined moulds and parts.

See also casting notes from 2003.

RC Yacht Tech

Jari Immanen now has his own website at http://rcyachttech.webs.com/

Monster servo mount

The new high-torque winch servo is 44x22mm instead of the standard 40x20mm, so we made a new radio-plate for it today. The new plate has a bigger cut-out for the new servo, and is slightly wider. The boat will sail again next weekend so we will hear how the new servo works then.

CNC-turned stainless steel IOM bulb

CNC-turned from stainless steel, this is a 400mm long and 38mm diameter IOM keel bulb. A slot will be milled in the middle for the keel fin. Unlike a lead-bulb this one will require no surface filler/sanding/painting. But the density (compared to water) of stainless steel is 8 at most, while lead bulbs can be close to 11 (depending on the lead-alloy), which means the volume of this bulb is slightly larger.

PIKANTO hull Nr 1

We've moulded the first PIKANTO hull!

This is a bit of a prototype since it's some time since Jari or myself moulded a boat, and also because these are brand new moulds and we have never made a boat in one-go like this before: closed mould with the hull, deck, mast/finbox, and ruddertube all attached in one session. We need a bit of routine and practice to get the whole process of "release-agent > gelcoat > resin/fiber > fin/mastobox > close-mould > seal deck-joint" running smoothly. I am sure by hull nr 5 or so we will have learnt the workflow pretty well 🙂

Having said that, this first prototype hull came out of the mould pretty good. There are some problems with an uneven gelcoat layer, and a few places in the foredeck where there is trapped air between fiber/gelcoat. We're considering either cutting away the rounded flanges on the foredeck, or alternatively moulding the deck from many smaller pieces of fiber that would drape around the challenging shapes better. Anyway we are pretty happy that the boat comes out of the mould with deck attached and fin/mastbox + ruddertube in place. I've been thinking about a glass-fiber rudder-tube moulding also, and there's obviously a possibility to add a support under the foredeck for the jib-attachment point, maybe even the mainsheet post tubing also?

Polished PIKANTO hull mould

Shine mould, shine.

After sanding with 1200-grit and a 10-15um particle-size fine paper it is time for polishing. We have two grades of polishing-compound. These pics show the coarse type which is polished with a spinning soft disk on a power-drill.

Pikanto rudder mould

Jari cnc-milled rudder moulds for the Pikanto IOM this weekend. The design is similar to the Sails ETC rudder, but slightly larger and with a NACA 0006 airfoil profile, and a slot for a 4mm rudder stock.

IOM ALIOTH

Alioth has been designed by RC Sailing Lab to be manufactured using 3D printing technology.

The project gathered the experience of the lead project designer J.E., who contributed with his extensive experience in the IOM Class and the design team, who worked exhaustively in achieving modern, functional and harmonic shapes.

The purpose is to put on the water a 3D printed IOM hull, easy to assemble at home, and at a low price, capable of winning races at the highest level.

Alioth was launched in December 2020. Thanks to the early Alioth owners and the design team, a new upgrade was launched in February 2022 (Alioth 2022 version): hull shape was slightly modified to achieve better performance in strong winds; flat aft deck with lid-hatch option was implemented; now the hull thickness varies along the length to achieve a stiffer and strongest hull at the less weight possible; new CNC milling appendages molds were made.

  11. Building a Vickers V8

Building a cedar V8 IOM. Designed by Ian Vickers. June 2012. I have sailed and raced mostly dinghies all my life, Lasers for the last 25 years. 12. A Wooden "Alternative" IOM RC Sailboat

A Wooden "Alternative" IOM RC Sailboat. April 12, 2020. Being forced to stay home due to the Coronavirus quarantine has had a positive impact on my boat building. I still haven't been able to sail my newly completed Vickers V8 IOM, yet have just planked and glassed a wooden Alternative IOM. It only took me eight days.

  13. IOM

Ellipsis IOM 20 section laser cut sections: less 3mm for planking with building base included. These drawings were done as an experiment and an option with the Ellipsis plan purchase. 14. IOM Building

CNC-turned stainless steel IOM bulb. CNC-turned from stainless steel, this is a 400mm long and 38mm diameter IOM keel bulb. A slot will be milled in the middle for the keel fin. Unlike a lead-bulb this one will require no surface filler/sanding/painting. But the density (compared to water) of stainless steel is 8 at most, while lead bulbs can ...

  17. How to get started making wooden RC sailboats

After building the T37 I've gone on to build Star 45's, Vintage Marbleheads, and now I've just completed an IOM. Other than the T37 there aren't that many wood sailboat RC kits out there. There are things called "short kits" though. A short kit is where you purchase a bare minimum from a company and then you supply the rest.

  19. Alternative IOM Interior Bits

Alternative IOM Interior Bits. April 25, 2020. For whatever reasons, I've been too unmotivated to do much blogging about this Alternative IOM RC sailboat build. But I'm making progress regardless. It started off quickly after planking it in only eight days. But now I've slowed down. I've installed the interior bits now.

  20. Vickers V8 IOM Build

Vickers V8 IOM Build. This will be the first of what might be several different build-blogs, so have some patience with me! Last year I was fortunate enough to be allowed to design laser-cut frames for the Mirage Radio Yachts "Corbie 5" IOM. I just finished that build and am now already looking forward to what I might build this coming fall.

  21. Building an IOM rig

The mast plug can be adjusted so the small metal arm which the top of the sail is tied to, rotates really easily. Tap a thread into the bottom of the mast plug's smaller hole, and screw a small screw with a flattened end into the hole. Sharpen the bottom of the wire arm which swivels, so that it is a point. When the wire arm rests on the ...

  22. On Wooden RC Sailboats & Other Fun Thoughts to Think

This is the third RC sailboat construction manual I've written, and it's the most accurate. But it's also the one that I have the most anxiety about because I'm still a rookie in the IOM world and others are building such gorgeous boats. Unlike Star 45's and Vintage Marbleheads, which are great but not raced as much, IOM's are still very popular.
