New catamarans: 2021’s most exciting launches

Yachting World

  • April 7, 2021

Fast cruising is the theme this year, say Toby Hodges and Sam Fortescue, who look at some of 2021's exciting new multihull launches

catamaran launch sites

2021 looks set to be a bumper year for new catamarans as the trend for fast cruising yachts, which deliver plenty if living space continues. This year there are set to be several new catamarans on the market, here’s our selection of those about which we are most excited.

A group of wild enthusiasts in the landlocked Czech Republic are the force behind the new IC36 from Independent Catamaran. The debut model is a fully race-tuned cat that aims to appeal to speed freaks as well as performance cruisers. Oh, and it unbolts to fit inside a shipping container or on a trailer!

Perhaps closer in design terms to the Extreme 40 than a traditional cat, the IC36 has super narrow hulls, high displacement bows and an optional rotating carbon rig with composite stays.

A sporty-looking carbon beam braces the bows and doubles as a bowsprit for asymmetric sails. Deep daggerboards help windward performance, and there’s a racy dual carbon tiller providing direct rudder control.

“The first time I saw it, I just felt like it was from one of Jules Verne’s adventures,” says co-founder Jaromír Popek.

The boat has been optimised for electric propulsion with twin 6kW Oceanvolt saildrives and up to 15kWh of lithium-ion batteries giving a range of a couple of hours. Powerful hydrogeneration under sail keeps batteries topped up. For longer spells at anchor , there is also a decent 1.15kW array of Solbian solar panel s which folds away when not required.

As much fun as this boat should be to sail in its Raw racing variant, it is also available with more creature comforts.

The Pacer model has a coachroof, cockpit tent, more storage and cooking and freshwater systems. It can accommodate a reported eight people in the hulls, with a fridge and two-burner hob to port and a shower/heads to starboard. Or you can opt for a fridge and hob in the folding cockpit table.

Construction is in epoxy-glass composite with local Kevlar reinforcement and foam core, helping to keep weight down to less than 3 tonnes (key for trailering). And there are three buoyancy chambers in each hull, which underpin the claim that the boat is unsinkable.

For all the variants, the light weight and high-performance rig means you can sail in a breath of wind. In a blow, the sky should be the limit. Expect reaching speeds of 20 knots plus, particularly if you take the high-modulus carbon wing mast from Pauger.

This new launch from the world’s number one catamaran brand is the largest in the range of ‘regular’ boats, before entering the more luxurious world of the Lagoon 65.

It has been drawn by VPLP and Patrick le Quement, whose design nous has done much to make cats more mainstream. Many of the features, therefore, will be familiar from the smaller boats.

However, that extra length creates more volume below, so the Lagoon 55 can be arranged with up to six true double cabins with ensuite heads. “It’s the first time we have six cabins of the same size and function and a larger flybridge,” explains products developments manager Martina Torrini during a premiere virtual tour of the first model to launch in March.

Another first is the curving steps up from the transom skirt to the aft deck, dubbed ‘the stairway to heaven’. “The surfaces of the transom can be used differently,” adds Torrini. “Not just a way to access the boat, they become in themselves a living area.” This feature extends the size of the cockpit to 25m2, and even offers a plancha grill.

There’s more social space on the huge flybridge (with fridge and bar) and a movable sunpad on the forward part of the coachroof. The boat also features Lagoon’s first ever dedicated forward cockpit, connected to the saloon by a drop-down window.

A 107m2 fat-head main provides grunt, but is coupled with a self-tacking jib. As with all Lagoons, the emphasis is on comfort and ease of use rather than speed and windward pointing ability.

LOA: 16.56m / 54ft 4in Beam: 9.00m / 29ft 6in Draught: 1.55m / 5ft 1in Displacement: 26,500kg / 58,433lb Price: €tbc Builder: www.cata-lagoon.com

Fountaine Pajot Samana 59

Replacing the five-year-old Ipanema 58, this luxurious 59-footer integrates many of the new design features of the 45, which boasted longer, wider hulls that nevertheless showed 10% less drag. Chief among the new attractions is an enlarged cockpit, forward lounge and flybridge, for more socialising space.

“We wanted to emphasise her identity by optimising her interior and exterior spaces to make this 59ft catamaran the equivalent of a larger yacht,” explains designer Olivier Racoupeau.

“Whether it’s the flybridge, the cockpit or the saloon, we’ve worked hard to find harmony between all the living spaces on board, to gain every millimetre inside and outside.”

There’s a door forward out of the saloon, and the option of a hydraulic bathing platform, which doubles up for tender storage. Up to six cabins are offered, and the rare option of putting the galley up in the saloon or down to port. Hull number one is joining the World ARC .

Meanwhile, a new 51 is tipped for launch in 2022, which will focus on sustainability and have 2kW of flush solar panels built into the flybridge.

LOA: 18.21m / 59ft 9in Beam: 9.46m / 31ft 1in Draught: 1.40m / 4ft 7in Displacement: 25,500kg / 56,217lb Price ex VAT: €1,302,900 Builder: www.catamarans-fountaine-pajot.com

The new 42 replaces the Leopard 40, and it draws on the latest design thinking from the larger boats in the range. Like the award-winning Leopard 50, it has continuous hull windows, a hardtop, and contrasting coachroof accents. But it also goes further, with plumb bows and long horizontal chines.

That lounging space on the coachroof adds 65% to the exterior entertainment area. “By integrating the geometry of the lounge into the GRP hardtop, we were able to achieve a lightweight area that added less weight to the boat than one average sized crewmember,” explains Michael Robertson, chief designer at builder Robertson & Caine. It has been cleverly engineered so as not to steal headroom from the cockpit.

In contrast to many modern cats, the Leopard 42 makes a virtue of the separate cockpit and saloon, whose seating is focused on the forward galley. There is lots of glazing and a full-height door out onto the foredeck. Every cabin has a third more floor space and twice the glazed area of the old Leopard 40. Each has an island berth and its own heads with shower.

But it’s not all about space. “Performance potential remains one of the top priorities,” says naval architect Alex Simonis of Simonis-Voogd Yacht Design. “We spend a lot of time refining the rig geometry and the sail layout to boost the efficiency of the rig plan. At the same time, the ongoing refinement in hull and appendage design allows us to create a yacht with better sea motion and more agility.

LOA: 12.67m 41ft 7in Beam: 7.04m 23ft 1in Draught: 1.40m 4ft 7in Displacement: 12,460kg 27,469lb Price ex VAT: €399,000 Builder: www.leopardcatamarans.com

The new entry-level yacht from France’s Neel Trimarans is designed to bring the world of three hulls to a new clientele.

Building on the success of the larger Neel 47 and Neel 51, the 43 takes the fight to the catamaran, with a big superstructure that includes two double cabins as well as a galley and saloon.

There’s a further double cabin forward in the central nacelle, and cosy singles in either bow. A sliding door and window allows the saloon and the cockpit seating areas to be socially connected, although they remain two very different spaces.

The bulkhead helmstation to starboard has commanding views out over the huge coachroof. From the drawings, this appears to allow a tight sheeting angle for the genoa, but brings the mainsheet, which is fastened to the transom, close to the davits and skirt of the central hull.

The main is square-topped with two full battens and there is also a high-performance carbon spar option.

Though the lay-up is in standard foam-cored glassfibre, Neel says it is leaning towards more environmentally friendly construction. Interior joinery is from sustainable Alpi wood and recyclable material.

LOA: 13.11m / 43ft 0in Beam: 7.50m / 24ft 7in Draught: 1.50m / 4ft 11in Displacement: 9,000kg /19,841lb Price ex VAT: €329,800 Builder: www.neel-trimarans.com

Marsaudon Composites has quietly built an enthusiastic following for its TS42 and TS50 catamarans since the smaller boat was launched six years ago.

That these have been the first boats to cross the Atlantic in the last two ARC s has also done its reputation no harm.

The yard is based at Lorient La Base, at the heart of the French offshore racing scene, so it’s perhaps no surprise these designs are lightweight and offer plenty of performance.

The direct tiller steering, which gives a responsive feel to the helm, is an example of the thinking that sets these boats apart from other multihulls and makes them sought after models. Yet they also have enough space both on deck and below to offer very comfortable living.

A 57-footer from the board of Marc Lombard will be the third design to join the stable. It shares the same hallmarks as the existing models, although a wheel steering option will also be offered.

In suitable conditions this is a cruising yacht that can be expected to hit speeds of well over 20 knots.

The hull shape is clearly a progression from the earlier models, while following the same light displacement principles with fine hull shapes. Lombard drew a new shape for the bows to increase efficiency and reduce the tendency for bow-down trim. He told us: “The bows are shaped so that, when the boat is powered up and starts to heel, the lee bow will generate extra lift to push the bow up.”

The additional size makes the interior spaces of this boat significantly larger than those of the 50-footer, especially in the hulls. Much thought has also gone into ergonomics and weight saving, stripping out and simplifying anything that is not essential. CEO Damien Cailliau likes to draw on a quote from Colin Chapman, founder of Lotus Cars: “Simplify, then add lightness.”

As an example, there are no hull linings, which saves weight and complication, but requires extremely neat moulding. “A core competency of Marsaudon Composites is that we produce excellent mouldings,” says Cailliau, “so we don’t need to hide our work.”

Seawind 1260: Lightweight catamaran making waves on both sides of the Atlantic

As a low volume builder – only 28 of the smaller boats have been built in total – Marsaudon Composites can offer semi-custom interior arrangements, providing they don’t add unnecessary weight. The boat can also be built with varying amounts of carbon to reduce displacement further.

At the same time as announcing this design Marsaudon launched a rebranding of the range, which will now be known as Ocean Rider Catamarans (or ORC). The new name is a better fit with the qualities with which owners identify than the Très Simple concept that led to the original TS designation.

To underscore the difference between these boats and the majority of catamarans in this size range a tiller has been incorporated in the logo.

Tooling for the ORC 57 is under construction and the first boat is scheduled to be unveiled in September 2021.

Current Marine CM46 & CM52

The founder of RS Sailing , Martin Wadhams, is a racing sailor who now spends more and more time cruising.

Martin and his wife, Amanda, enjoy sailing fast boats and have spent some time looking to upgrade from their Pogo 12.50 to a multihull. Their search for a true performance cruising catamaran – and one that wouldn’t cost seven figures – turned out few viable options.

Australian-based designer Jeff Shionning put them onto some fresh designs he has done for Current Marine, a new South African brand formed from an experienced team of composites experts at Knysna, between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth on the south coast.

It has been set up to build the new CM46 and CM52 in low-volume semi-custom production. On visiting the yard a year ago, Wadhams was impressed enough with the high tech builds to order the second CM46.

He reports that the joinery is all laminated in, there is plenty of opportunity for layout customisation (in three or four cabins) and, owing to the lower labour costs in South Africa, pricing is keen.

Shionning’s CM designs are lightweight, efficient catamarans that should be able to sail well in light breeze and outrun weather systems in the open ocean.

Key features include daggerboards, fine bows, centralised weight of engines and tanks, and high bridgedeck clearance. The rig is also positioned amidships for optimum weight centralisation, while also helping to create a large foretriangle for flying a range of furling headsails. Aluminium or carbon spars and diesel or hybrid propulsion are offered.

Wadhams says there is good stowage space and payload capacity for comfortable liveaboard cruising. “They’re built using post-cured epoxy, carbon, E-Glass and PVC foam-cored laminates – a level above mainstream brands,” he insists. “This brings the construction found in a few larger, high-end boats into smaller-size catamarans.” The first CM46 is a full carbon racing version destined for an Auckland-based owner and is due to launch early 2021. The second boat (for Wadhams) has a more cruising-oriented spec.

Seawind 1370

Is this the most popular new design of 2021? Although the first of this new 45ft model is not due to launch until later in the autumn, there has already been a phenomenal uptake in orders.

Publicity has been helped by vloggers Sailing Ruby Rose ordering one of the first boats, but a staggering 55 have been sold already. This has led to the Australian/Vietnamese yard establishing a new technical department that is separate from the production department.

European sales manager Jay Nolan says this 13-strong team is tasked with working up every system on the boat and looking at hybrid solutions.

Outremer 55

A contemporary fast cat set up for short-handed world cruising, Outremer’s exciting new 55 launches this winter.

We previewed this VPLP design in our September issue and hope to test it during the spring. Much focus has been placed on weight and stiffness to help increase performance and ensure the boat can sail in the lightest breezes and therefore rarely need engine power.

New england launch sites.

Here’s a list of some locations where a catamaran can be launched. Please add or email me with any that you are aware of. If possible include any parking fees and other pertinent information.

1. Sandy Point Beach – Portsmouth, RI $10. per day. Great sailing on the Sakonnet River. Beach wheels needed since you aren’t supposed to drive onto the beach. You can’t continually leave your boat set up there over night but you can get away with it once in a while.

2. Third Beach – Newport or Portsmouth, RI. $20. per day. Ramp for launching and sandy beach next to the ramp. Great area to sail in. You’re at the end of the Sakonnet River and it’s only a short sail to the open ocean. Some rocky areas so best to get a chart or ask others. You used to be able to buy a season’s pass at Newport Second Beach, hopefully still can.

3. The park next to Ida Lewis – Newport Harbor RI. Great place to launch but nowhere to park unless you have a town sticker.

4. Fort Adams – Newport, RI. No charge to enter the park. Ramp at the end of the barn. Difficult place to launch. Sails have to go up first and then you have to go park. No beach close by and in the summer only a few feet of the beach available around the corner. Before and after the season the beach can be used for launching. The other ramp next to Sail Newport also has no beach right next to it although you can paddle over to it to set up your sails. Maybe a fee to launch there.

5. Gooseberry Island , Westport, MA – No fee but limited parking and jams up early morning. Ramp and nice beach. Can sail out to the islands or over to other nearby beaches.

6. Sebago Lake , ME – State Park. Entry fee per person. Ramp, crowded parking lot usually. Trailer parking sometimes a 1/4 mile away. Nice beach once you get to it.

7. Hull, MA – Near the wind generator.

Conimicut Point in Warwick is a great place, not the public park but the fishing access spot just up the bay from the lighthouse at the south end of Shawomet Ave. (see Google maps). Never had any problems with parking or hassles.

Common Fence Point Blvd Portsmouth, Beach launch, I keep my cat there all summer. Private association, very relaxed no questions asked, lots of small sail boats every weekend

Catamaran launching and landing

Two hulls mean that a special technique is needed to launch or retrieve a catamaran on its dolly. Once on the water, the catamaran provides the crew with an extremely stable platform as they prepare to leave the beach or come in from sailing.

LAUNCHING A CATAMARAN

As with any dinghy , you should rig the sails of a catamaran as close to the water as possible. A catamaran dolly has two wheels on a central axle, with supports for the twin hulls. To put the dolly in

Catamaran Trolley Slip

place, one crew lifts a bow while the other pushes the trolley underneath.

The dolly supports should be pushed as far back as the balance point of the hulls, usually just behind the front beam. Oversize tires make it possible to wheel the boat on its dolly, even across soft sand or loose shingle.

1A catamaran is rigid enough for the whole boat to be lifted by one bow. Raise the rudders, and protect the sterns from the ground—two old tires are suitable for this.

2 With sails uncleated, and the dolly under the balance point of the twin hulls, push the catamaran into the water until it is deep enough to float. Then remove the dolly.

catamaran launch sites

If the wind is sideshore or onshore, the crew can hop on and sail away. In an offshore wind they can "reverse" away from the beach, sitting on the bows with the sterns lifted.

The leeward rudder must be locked down before the helmsman can power up the mainsail. If the rudder blade is partly lifted, there will be marked weather helm.

CATAMARAN LAUNCHING AND LANDING

COMING ASHORE

Landing a catamaran is usually simple— if the sand is soft you can even sail up the beach. Control your speed as you come ashore, and watch for swimmers. Keep the rudders down to maintain control; if you do not lift them in time, they will knock up on impact with the ground. In more difficult situations, such as a strong onshore wind pushing waves on to the beach, it is good practice to drop the mainsail offshore, roll it on the trampoline, and sail in under jib alone. If approaching a slipway, stop the boat by turning head to wind as you reach the slip, but do not let it ground.

Barnegat Bay public launch sites?

My brother-in-law just picked up a new 2011 Monterey 260SCR and he is keeping it in Barnegat bay. I wanted to trailer my boat down there to hang out with them on nice weekends. Do any of you know of any public launch ramps down that way? I think there is seaside park municipal launch. Anybody ever been there? Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: Barnegat Bay public launch sites? I have been down there only twice and both times used Downes fish camp (on that list above) in Bayville. Single little ramp but fine for an 18' for sure...real sleepy little place, no wait at all, nice little store and food there too. $10 to launch and you park your truck within spittin' distance of the ramp. I would recommend it for sure.

FAQs about the cat 16

How much wake do the catamarans produce.

The catamarans have been specifically designed to produce minimal wash.

How long will the fuel tanks last?

The RS CAT16 9.9hp 4-stroke with 12-litre fuel tank will last between 120 and 160 km.

The RS CAT16 15hp-20hp 4-stroke with 12-litre fuel tank will last between 100 and 140km.

What is the top speed of each engine?

The RS CAT16 with 9.9hp top speed is 28kph

RS CAT16 with 15Hp top speed is 32kph

How many people will the catamarans carry?

The RS CAT16 with 15hp is designed to carry 4 persons. However, because it has a buoyancy capacity of 650kg, it will carry significantly more for emergency rescue purposes only.

What’s the delivery period?

Delivery is subject to our availability. We receive containers from England 3 or 4 times a year.

May I test-drive one before buying?

Yes. We’d be happy to arrange a test drive with us or find a launch that’s already working in your area.

How many people are needed to lift the RS CAT16 catamaran in and out of the water with or without a trailer/trolley?

With trailer/trolley: 1-2 persons.  Without trailer/trolley: 4-6 persons.

What is the weight of each craft?

RS CAT16 complete with a 15Hp about 500 pounds

What is the turning circle of the RS CAT16 catamaran?

The RS CAT16 has a 4-metre (14-feet) turning circle.

Can I tow the catamaran behind my car?

Yes, easily! The catamaran and trailer are very light, less than 1100 pounds with motor and trailer.

Where can I get a trailer for towing?

We supply trailers customised for towing as well as launching the catamarans in and out of the water. The trailers and trolleys are easily operated by one person.

What is the difference between our Rowing Coaching Catamarans and other launches?

Stronger construction and built to last – first boats ever sold in 1992 are still in use!

Higher speeds achieved with less horse-power.

Manoeuvrability – tight turning circle of 4 metres (14-feet radius).

Low wash because of less water displacement with twin hydrodynamic hulls.

Lower energy consumption.

More economic to run because of fuel efficiency.

How durable are the catamarans?

The hulls are made of extremely hardwearing roto-moulded, TRILAM polyethylene, which is approximately 10mm to 12mm thick. The first catamarans were built in 1992 and are still in active use!

All our catamarans carry a 10-year limited warranty on the hulls.(Please see T&C)

How much does one of your catamarans cost?

Email us for a current quote! Prices vary slightly from shipment to shipment but they’re always the most affordable launch of its type.

What our customers are saying:

We have been using the rs 16’s since 2018 and have been very happy with them. their small turning radius is helpful on our narrower river. they are easy to maintain and transport and provide an excellent safe platform to coach from. tom and barb kraft are incredibly helpful and responsive, their attention to detail is always appreciated..

- Kit Bennett, Director of Rowing and Varsity Head Coach, Skyline Crew

This launch is the best coaching platform that I have used in over 20 years as a Division I rowing coach. Once I coached in one, I knew that I had to get them for my staff. We currently have 4 in Omaha. Please come to Omaha and take a test drive

lagoon55-23

Description

Lagoon launched their first catamaran, the original 55, back in 1987. Fast forward to 2021, and the first new generation Lagoon 55 splashed representing almost 4 decades of development and design evolution from this famous French catamaran manufacturer.

Lagoon celebrated its 6,000th catamaran launch in 2021 since 1987, quite a milestone.

These days, the Lagoon brand is all about maximising comfort and space while maintaining decent performance under sail. On a test sail off Port Ginesta (our home base near Barcelona), we achieved 9.7 knots with the Code 0 up in a moderate breeze of 15 knots on a beam reach (apparent wind angle of 75). Those aren’t the kind of numbers that you’d hit on an Ocean Class from Catana , but still, pretty impressive for such a comfortable, spacious boat.

Photos Credit Nicolas Claris, Lagoon, Katamarans

Looking around this catamaran, they have certainly delivered on the comfort, and we’d say they have delivered on the space too.

The 55 represents a big step up from the 51 with a bigger beam, redesigned aft cockpit and transoms, a full flybridge, saloon skylights and an improved foredeck. Let’s take a look.

Of course, with all of that space comes weight: 27.7 tonnes of it with no kit on.

When the wind heads below 7 knots, your speed will drop away and you will need to motor sail, particularly at tighter angles to the wind. That is your compromise. With a breeze and the Code 0 up, she moves very well.

  • Huge living space from the aft platform to the forward cockpit with the flybridge added for good measure
  • A step up in quality and design in the interiors compared to smaller models
  • Decent performance for the amount of space and weight of this boat.
  • You will need good crew to manage this boat in the marina.
  • Not much feel on the helm.
  • Once you add the options, the price can accelerate.

Living Area

catamaran launch sites

Nauta Design are responsible for the interior design and overall they have done a great job.

The boat feels like a smaller Sixty 5 rather than a bigger 51, it’s the new generation alright. The L-shaped galley on the starboard side has a bar attached, and the huge sofa will soak up plenty of guests. The saloon table will fit 8-10 people when fully extended.

The overall feel is warm and cosy.

Heading through you arrive in the enormous saloon (27 m² or 290 sq ft) which is linked to the the forward cockpit via a large fully opening front window. Here you have another large sofa area and a deck that is flush with the nets. There is an option for a shade sail on carbon poles.

Helming is done from the flybridge with a rigid bimini that is accessed from the port side deck (there is an option for an additional access to starboard which would make the journey to the trampolines easier). The flybridge has forward and aft sunbathing areas, an outdoor galley / bar area, and forward-facing table and seating.

catamaran launch sites

The mainsail can be hoisted by a single crew member thanks to the electric winches.

During our test sail off Port Ginesta, we hit 7-8 knots in a 15 knot breeze with full mainsail and jib. Once the 154m² Code 0 was unfurled, we accelerated to almost 10 knots with the wind on the beam. Not bad for a boat weighing over 30 tonnes with all the gear on.

You can expect to sail at around 70% of TWS with the bigger sails flying off the bowsprit unless the wind really dies, and then you will need to motor-sail.

With the 272m² asymmetric spinnaker, you will maximise your speed heading on a broad reach as well. Lagoon are reporting 6 knots in only 7 knots of true wind, 8 knots in 10. You are not going to be breaking any speed records on the Lagoon 55, but the performance is nevertheless impressive for such a spacious boat.

There’s plenty of room for sails on this boat, it makes sense to stock the sail locker up with some big ‘uns.

The living space is enormous in the hulls thanks to the pronounced chimes.

The Lagoon 55 is available with four, five and six-cabin versions. In the four-cabin version , the owner’s cabin (17.5 m² or 188 sq. ft.)  is aft in the starboard hull and fills two-thirds of the hull. The other three cabins each have an en-suite.

The Lagoon 55 (2001) is so different from the original model launched 34 years before, and represents how Lagoon’s design philosophy and DNA has changed in over 3 decades of development.

Performance catamaran enthusiasts may prefer the older model, but Lagoon has already sold more new 55s than the total number of original 55s produced. They know their market. The bottom line is that there is more market demand for this kind of package.

For comfort, space, sailing ability and value for money, this cruising catamaran ticks a lot of boxes.

What is the price of a Lagoon 55 (2021)? How much does this catamaran cost? As always, we will qualify this with “it depends on your options”, but to give you an idea, you will start the conversation at around €1.1m and head up to €1.4-1.5m depending on how you kit the boat out.

New Shadowlark Support Vessel Designed to Carry Triton 3300/3 MKII submersible

Want to live like Jacques Cousteau but can’t afford the superyacht to carry your sub? Shadowcat today announced a 79-foot catamaran that would serve as a mothership for a deep-diving Triton 3300/3 MKII submersible.

The new Launch and Recovery Craft (LARC), called Shadowlark, could serve as either a support boat for a larger superyacht, or more likely, as a standalone vessel for anyone who wants to go diving in their own submarine, and then use the cat as a primary yacht or research vessel.

The Triton 3330/3 MKII is able to dive to 3,300 feet, carrying a pilot and two guests, for up to 12 hours. The Shadowlark was designed to be able to launch, recover and support this three-seater, or an even larger Triton weighing up to 26,400 pounds. “This is a turnkey solution that was very much a collaboration to create a complete package together,” Robert Smith, founder of Shadowcat, told Robb Report.

While the two vessels are available separately, the manufacturers also gave the package a base price of under $10 million for both. “Before this, there was no market perception of what kind investment it would take to have a package like this,” Smith said.

Triton President Patrick J. Lahey added that the pricing was also aiming at a new demographic. “We can clearly see how this would dramatically increase the potential market of customers to include people that, while very affluent, might find owning a superyacht out of reach financially,” Lahey told Robb Report.

The Shadowlark was designed for offshore running. Its 28-ft. beam and 5-ft. draft give it substantial width for comfort and a low draft to reach distant, shallow waters.

The cat’s extra stability also helps its main mission. “It can operate in weather and wave conditions that other vessels cannot,” said Smith. “Of course, the design is to be able to perform her core task, which is to launch and recover Triton submarines quickly and safely.”

Your ultimate guidebook to inflatable catamaran.

In recent years, the allure of inflatable catamarans has surged, capturing the imaginations of water enthusiasts around the world. These buoyant vessels offer a unique blend of portability and versatility, making them an increasingly popular choice for those eager to navigate the waters with freedom and ease.

As the demand for inflatable catamarans continues to rise, it becomes paramount for prospective buyers to embark on their purchasing journey with a compass of informed decision-making. Beyond the surface appeal of these floating marvels lies a sea of considerations that can significantly influence your sailing experience. This introduction sets sail on the exploration of key factors to ponder, ensuring that your choice of an inflatable catamaran aligns seamlessly with your aspirations on the water. Let's navigate the waves of possibilities and chart a course towards the perfect inflatable catamaran for you.

Purpose of Use

Before setting sail on the vast ocean of inflatable catamaran options, it's crucial to anchor your decision in the purpose for which you envision using this watercraft. Are you a leisure seeker, yearning for peaceful day trips on calm waters? Perhaps you're an avid angler, seeking a stable platform for your fishing expeditions. Or could it be that the thrill of competitive racing is calling your name?

Understanding the primary purpose of your inflatable catamaran will act as your North Star, guiding you toward models tailored to your specific needs. Each type comes with its own set of features designed to enhance the experience, ensuring that your vessel becomes not just a means of transportation but an indispensable companion on your aquatic adventures. As we embark on this journey, let's set the sails towards the perfect inflatable catamaran that aligns with your unique aspirations on the water.

Types of Catamarans

Catamarans come in different flavors, each with its unique perks. Imagine them as three main characters, each with their own story:

  • Traditional Sailors: These are the ones powered by the wind, like the old-school adventurers. If you love the idea of harnessing nature to propel you forward, these might be your kind of catamarans.
  • Power Players: These catamarans prefer a different kind of horsepower – engines! They're like the speedsters of the group, zipping through the water with a bit more oomph.
  • Inflatable Explorers: Think of these as the chameleons of the catamaran world. They're inflatable, making them easy to carry around, and they can also set sail or attach motor. Perfect for those who want flexibility without sacrificing performance.

Now, let's find out what works best for you.... so you can pick the one that fits your style best.

Deck Types and Details

  • Imagine the deck as the heart of your catamaran—a space that shapes your experience on the water. Some catamarans boast flat decks, ideal for fishing trips where you can cast your line without obstacles. Others have structured decks, perfect for seating arrangements or accommodating sailing gear.
  • Understanding the deck design helps you envision how you'll use the space. Are you picturing lazy days lounging on the deck, or do you need room for specific activities like fishing or storing equipment? Knowing the deck type that suits your plans best will steer you toward the catamaran that fits your lifestyle on the water.

Inflatable Materials

Now, let's peek beneath the surface and talk about what keeps these floating wonders afloat – their skins!

  • Think of PVC as the tough skin that laughs in the face of the sun. It's durable and can take a bit of rough and tumble. Great for those who want a sturdy companion for various adventures.
  • Hypalon is like the superhero of materials, especially against UV rays and abrasions. If you want your catamaran to age like fine wine, Hypalon might be your choice. It's a top pick for longevity and robust performance.

Catamaran on the shore

Deciding between PVC and Hypalon is a bit like choosing between a trusty workhorse and a superhero cape. Both have their strengths, and the best choice depends on your priorities. If durability and long-term resilience top your list, Hypalon might be the hero you're looking for. Ready to pick the perfect skin for your floating companion?

Hull Types and Details

The hull, the silent hero beneath the surface, plays a crucial role in defining how your catamaran performs in the water. Imagine it as the foundation that determines stability, speed, and how well your catamaran handles different water conditions.

  • Symmetrical Hulls for Stability:
  • Shape: Symmetrical hulls typically have a U-shape or V-shape. This design provides a wider base, offering excellent stability by dispersing the weight evenly. Ideal for leisurely cruises, fishing expeditions, or any scenario where stability is paramount.
  • Asymmetrical Hulls for Speed:
  • Shape: Asymmetrical hulls often feature a more pronounced V-shape, with one hull larger than the other. This streamlined design allows for enhanced speed and agility, making them ideal for those who want to cut through the water with grace and pace, perfect for speed enthusiasts and racing.
  • Pontoon-Style Hulls for Calm Waters:
  • Shape: Pontoon-style hulls are typically flat-bottomed like two long tubes or pontoons placed parallel to each other. This shape maximizes stability and buoyancy, making them well-suited for calm and predictable waters. Ideal for relaxed cruises, picnics on the water, or family outings.
  • Wave-Piercing Hulls for Choppy Seas:
  • Shape: Wave-piercing hulls often have a slender, knife-like shape at the front, allowing them to cut through waves rather than ride over them. This design minimizes the impact of rough seas, providing a smoother ride in challenging conditions. Ideal for adventurous souls tackling open waters or coastal exploration.

Hull material:

  • Aluminum Hulls:
  • Advantages: Robust and corrosion-resistant, aluminum hulls excel in rugged conditions and are suitable for environments with anticipated impacts.
  • Considerations: Heavier than other materials, may require protective coatings in saltwater.
  • Fiberglass Hulls:
  • Advantages: Lightweight and fuel-efficient, fiberglass hulls are well-suited for recreational sailing in calm to moderately challenging conditions.
  • Considerations: Requires care to prevent damage from impacts; regular inspections and timely repairs are essential.
  • Inflatable Materials:
  • Advantages: Durable PVC or Hypalon materials provide flexibility and impact resistance, making inflatable hulls well-suited for portable and flexible sailing.
  • Considerations: Lightweight and convenient, may be more susceptible to punctures, but modern designs often include reinforced layers for added durability.

Understanding the suitability of these hull materials and hull types allows you to choose a catamaran aligned with your preferences, usage, and sailing conditions.

Catamaran Design and Suitability

Now that we've explored the foundations of catamarans—the types and hulls—let's set our sights on the overall design. Catamarans, like works of art, are crafted with specific intentions.

  • Stability Seekers:
  • For those prioritizing stability, catamarans with symmetrical hulls and wider decks provide a steady platform, ideal for leisurely cruises, family outings, or fishing trips where stability is key.
  • Speed Enthusiasts:
  • If speed and agility are on your radar, consider catamarans with asymmetrical hulls and sleek designs. These are perfect for competitive racing or thrilling jaunts where swift maneuvering is essential.
  • Versatile Explorers:
  • Seeking versatility? Inflatable catamarans with adaptable hull shapes offer flexibility for various activities. They're like the all-rounders, fitting into different roles – be it fishing, cruising, or even a dash of speed.
  • Adventure Seekers:
  • Exploring rougher waters? Wave-piercing hulls and streamlined designs are the companions of choice for coastal adventures or journeys through challenging conditions.

Understanding the design philosophy behind a catamaran helps align your preferences with the intended use.

Features to Consider

Now, let's shift our focus to the features that can elevate your catamaran experience. Picture these as the amenities that transform a good sailing day into a great one.

  • Air Chambers for Safety:
  • Multiple air chambers provide an extra layer of safety. In case one chamber is compromised, the others keep your catamaran afloat, ensuring you reach the shore safely.
  • Seating Types for Comfort:
  • Consider the seating types available. Catamarans often offer a choice between inflatable and rigid seats.
  • Inflatable Seats:
  • Ideal for those prioritizing flexibility and portability. Inflatable seats are easy to pack and transport, making them perfect for adventurers on the go.
  • Rigid Seats:
  • For a more structured and supportive experience, rigid seats provide stability and a solid platform. They are excellent for those seeking a comfortable and secure seating option.
  • Rod Holders for Anglers:
  • For fishing enthusiasts, the presence of rod holders is a game-changer. Whether mounted or inbuilt, these holders keep your fishing gear secure, allowing you to focus on the thrill of the catch.
  • Ample Storage for Convenience:
  • A well-designed catamaran offers sufficient storage for gear, coolers, and essentials. Whether you're out for the day or planning an extended trip, having everything you need on board enhances the experience.
  • Ease of Inflation for Quick Adventures:
  • Look for features that simplify the inflation process. High-capacity pumps or built-in inflation systems can turn setup into a breeze, ensuring you spend more time on the water and less time preparing.
  • Setup Time for Efficiency:
  • Consider the average setup time for quick assembly. Many catamarans are designed to be set up swiftly, with an average time ranging from 15 to 30 minutes. This efficiency allows you to maximize your time enjoying the water.
  • Additional Accessories for Customization:
  • Explore the availability of accessories such as sail kits, sunshades, Air Pump, Repair Kit, Inflatable Keel, Fins and Tabs, Transporting Wheels, or custom storage solutions. These extras can enhance functionality and tailor your catamaran to your specific needs.
  • Inbuilt GPS for Navigation.

Motor

  • Weight Capacity for Safe Voyages:
  • Be mindful of the weight capacity. A typical catamaran can safely accommodate passengers, gear, and accessories up to a certain weight limit. Ensure you stay within the recommended limits for a safe and enjoyable voyage. The weight capacity can range from around 300 pounds (approximately 136 kilograms) to 800 pounds (approximately 363 kilograms) or more.

As you weigh these features, envision the kind of experience you want on your catamaran, and let these considerations guide you toward the perfect vessel.

Choosing the Right Catamaran: Practical Considerations

Now that we've explored the various features, let's delve into practical considerations to help you make an informed decision.

  • Intended Use:
  • Define your primary purpose for the catamaran. Are you looking for a vessel for leisurely cruises, fishing adventures, or perhaps racing? Understanding your primary use will guide you towards the most suitable catamaran type and features.
  • Transportation and Storage:
  • Consider the logistics of transporting and storing your catamaran. If you have limited space, look for models with features like folding frames or inflatable components that make storage more manageable. Similarly, if you plan to transport it frequently, opt for a lightweight and easily portable design.
  • Establish a realistic budget based on your requirements. Catamarans come in a range of prices, and understanding your budget will help narrow down your options. Keep in mind that additional features and accessories may contribute to the overall cost.
  • Skill Level:
  • Assess your skill level and experience. Some catamarans are designed with beginners in mind, offering user-friendly features and stability, while others cater to more advanced sailors seeking speed and agility. Choose a catamaran that aligns with your expertise to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
  • Local Regulations:
  • Be aware of any local regulations or restrictions regarding catamaran usage. Certain areas may have specific rules governing the type of catamarans allowed, safety equipment requirements, or permissible activities. Ensure that your chosen catamaran complies with these regulations.
  • USCG Rating:
  • Check if the catamaran is USCG (United States Coast Guard) rated. A USCG rating ensures that the catamaran meets specific safety standards set by the Coast Guard. This certification is particularly important for ensuring the safety and reliability of the vessel, especially if you plan to use it in coastal or offshore waters.

By considering these practical aspects, you'll be well-equipped to select a catamaran that not only suits your preferences but also aligns with your lifestyle and intended use.

SpaceX recently completed work on its new crew access arm at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station that doubles its capacity to launch astronauts from the Space Coast, but its first use was not for humans. Instead, it flew up another cargo resupply mission to the International Space Station on Thursday.

Dragon lifts off from pad 40 for the first time in four years! pic.twitter.com/b3FJiydyvJ — SpaceX (@SpaceX) March 21, 2024

A Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Canaveral’s Space Launch Complex 40 at 4:55 p.m. on the CRS-30 mission.

The first-stage booster for the flight made its sixth trip to space and another landing back at nearby Landing Zone 1, bringing sonic booms to parts of Central Florida.

SpaceX has not used Canaveral for a Dragon launch in more than four years and that was for a previous design of its spacecraft. All launches since have come from nearby Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Pad 39-A, where all 13 of its Crew Dragon spaceflights have had to fly, until now.

SpaceX’s Sarah Walker, director of Dragon mission management, has worked on the cargo Dragon missions since they began in 2012.

“It was incredibly nostalgic for me to see the rocket and the spacecraft roll to the pad on those old stomping grounds early this morning,” she said. “Back then we loaded cargo while the vehicle was still horizontal using a mobile cleanroom before we would take the vehicle vertical for launch.”

The crew tower, though, first at KSC and now at Canaveral, opens the door, literally, for late access.

“It’s much easier to load a huge complement of time-critical NASA science into our Dragon spacecraft in the flight orientation,” she said.

The new Dragon has much more capacity than the ones used for SpaceX’s first 20 resupply missions. Now on its 30th, this Dragon will bring up more than 6,000 pounds of cargo research and supplies.

SpaceX opted to build out a second crew-capable launch site early on in its plans to construct a new launch tower at KSC for its massive Starship and Super Heavy spacecraft. NASA was concerned pad damage could affect its Commercial Crew Program access without the backup.

SpaceX and Boeing share the contract to provide U.S.-based human spaceflight for NASA astronauts, but SpaceX has been the sole provider since 2020 as Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner has faced a series of delays.

Boeing’s first test flight with humans on board is slated to fly as early as May, but in the meantime, SpaceX will have expanded its capability just in case.

The first human spaceflight use of SLC 40 could come this summer with the private Polaris Dawn mission with billionaire Jared Issacman. SpaceX has both the Crew-9 mission as early as August and a fourth private Axiom Space mission as early as October on the calendar, too.

SpaceX launches supplies to ISS astronauts from upgraded Cape Canaveral launchpad

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – SpaceX launched a Cargo Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station on Thursday afternoon to deliver food and more science experiments to the astronauts working and living on the orbiting laboratory.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station Launch Complex 40 at 4:55 p.m. ET Thursday. At the top of the rocket was a Cargo Dragon spacecraft packed with about 6,000 pounds of groceries, supplies, hardware and science experiments. This marks SpaceX's 30th re-supply launch (CRS-30) for NASA but the first re-supply mission launched from this pad in four years.

SEE WHAT NASA’S NEXT DECADE OF SPACE EXPLORATION LOOKS LIKE, DESPITE PROPOSED BUDGET CONSTRAINTS

NASA's ISS Transportation Integration Office Deputy Manager Kristi Duplichen said the crew can request menu items. For this launch, she said the crew asked for more coffee kits. They'll also get fresh produce, including citrus, apples and cherry tomatoes.

Among the payloads flying with SpaceX is a Canadian Space Agency CubeSat called Nanoracks-Killick-1 . This spring, the shoebox-sized spacecraft will be deployed from the ISS to measure sea ice thickness. The Memorial University of Newfoundland senior undergraduate engineering classes developed the mission.

Heidi Parris, a NASA ISS research office associate program scientist, said the satellite uses a relatively new method to monitor Earth, known as Global Navigation Satellite System reflectometry (GNSS-R) or reflected signals. While it's been used before on larger spacecraft, this is one of the first small satellites to use GNSS-R for ocean monitoring.

"This monitoring system could contribute to a better understanding of important ocean phenomena, particularly in the North Atlantic region, as well as improve weather and climate models," Parris said.

The liftoff marks the first for a SpaceX Dragon vehicle from Launch Complex 40 since SpaceX completed modifications to the launch tower, adding a crew arm to accommodate astronaut missions.

Sarah Walker, SpaceX Dragon mission management director, said the modifications make the launch site more like SpaceX's facilities at Launchpad 39A at Kennedy Space Center. The updates included "a pretty big upgrade" to the elevator and an emergency evacuation route for the crew in the form of a chute or slide.

SPACEX ACHIEVES HISTORIC MILESTONE IN LAUNCH OF WORLD'S LARGEST ROCKET INTO SPACE BUT STARSHIP LOST ON REENTRY

SpaceX recently shared a video of a test run on the emergency chutes at Pad 40.

"Our last Dragon mission to launch from this pad was about 10 cargo missions ago and just a little over four years ago," Walker said. "So here we are at CRS-30 launching again from pad 40, but with a pretty big upgrade over there on the pad."

SpaceX got the rocket off the pad ahead of stormy conditions expected to come to Florida on Friday.

Launch Weather Officer Melody Lovin with the Space Force's 45th Weather Squadron said the weather looked good for Thursday's liftoff.

DEVELOPING STORM BOUND FOR FLORIDA TO GATHER STEAM OVER GULF OF MEXICO AFTER BRINGING SEVERE WEATHER TO TEXAS

Lovin said if the launch had been delayed to Friday's backup window, the weather would have deteriorated significantly due to the low moving through Florida and bringing stormy conditions.

About 8 minutes after liftoff, the Falcon 9 booster came back to land at Cape Canaveral Landing Zone 1. As the booster returned, the rumble of a sonic boom could be felt throughout Central Florida.

The Dragon spacecraft will arrive and dock at the space station's Harmony module at 7:30 a.m. ET Saturday. About a month later, Dragon will return with research and cargo, splashing down off Florida's coast.
