Landyachtz Freedive Reef Review

landyachtz freedive reef review

My Landyachtz Freedive Reef has seen more combinations of trucks, wheels, wedges, etc., than any other board I’ve owned; it’s my favorite board in the Landyachtz lineup and possibly one of my favorites ever.

But there are one or two things that make it inappropriate for some riders. Find out what’s up with this deck in my review below.

Table of Contents

  • Length: 36.8″
  • Width: 9.6″
  • Wheelbases: 23-23.5″
  • Construction: 7 plies of Canadian maple, 2 plies fiberglass(pre-cured fiberglass)
  • Shape: Single Kick w/ Taper
  • Concave: Micro-drop with rocker, mellow W, and wheel flares

This is my favorite board from the Landyachtz line-up and the one I’ve spent the most time on.

I believe the Freedive is one of the most versatile longboard decks available today. Whether it has been freeriding, downhill, or cruising, I’ve been able to do them on this deck.

The kicktail is incredibly functional on this deck and paired with how lightweight it is, you can successfully ollie it – and maybe even do some tricks if you got the chops.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Downhill254 LongbrdingExplaind (@downhill254)

I’ve been setting it up with all sorts of wheels and trucks; if I had to pick one deck to ride forever (or take traveling with no idea what sorts of roads I might skate), this would be the one.

Aggressive hands down riding with big wheels, chill freeride, vibing, cruising, big slides, etc. It can do it.

And the graphic is incredible. It’s a pleasure to look at it and it is a real head turner – I’ve had many compliments. It’s also pretty scratch proof.

Landyachtz Freedive Reef

However, there are some things about this deck that make it unsuitable for some riders.

The space between the micro drops is only 23inches. This board is suited to riders who have a shorter stance or are smaller in size. For reference, I am about 5ft,10in (178cm) and I’m just relatively comfortable on this deck.

The wheelbase is also relatively short. This means this board isn’t inherently good for going super fast (over 40mph). That said, it can handle speed if you set it up with split-angle trucks. It is certainly more of a freeride board than a downhill board.

The construction is solid and the board has little torsional flex. However, the deck doesn’t handle impacts as well as I would like. The tail chips (just as any tail would) from a ton of use but remains functional for a long time.

It certainly has its cons, but nothing I’d say is a deal-breaker (unless you got a wide stance).

I think this is one of the best boards out there, and I certainly will be asking my team manager to hook me up with more of them.

And if I was designing my pro model board, it would look quite similar to this board.

Landyachtz Freedive Reef toeside

The Freedive has a relatively small deck (makes it versatile/quiver killer)

The Freedive Reef has a relatively “small” deck.

Because it is not too long and not too wide, the small deck allows the board to be used in a variety of ways.

I can set it up with 155mm (or 165mm) wide trucks and freeride wheels and use it for freeriding comfortably.

Or I can set it up with narrower trucks (120-140mm wide), pair it with wide wheels and use it for a more rip and grip setup.

The 8.9-9.2 ish inches where your feet go and the 23-23.5 inch wheelbases are in that sweet spot that the board can be used for freeriding or aggressive hands down riding successfully.

I have taken advantage of that with how I’ve ridden it.

This is what makes this board incredibly versatile.

However, when you consider all the features – think micro drop and kicktail, the standing platform on this small deck isn’t all that much.

Landyachtz Freedive Reef hands down toeside slide

The Freedive Reef has a small standing platform

You’ll be spending most of your riding time between or on the micro drops. Given the distance between the drops is about 23inches you don’t have that much space.

You have a pretty small standing platform to work with.

Freedive Reef

This smaller standing platform is great for riders with a small stance or riders smaller in size. You have the drops not too far apart and you can use both when riding.

The drops on most micro drop boards are often too far apart to be used. And you end up using either the front or the back drop, but never use both at the same time (unless you’re tall or have a wide stance).

The Landyachtz Cheese grater is a good example of this.

So this deck is great because you can use both drops.

However, that small standing platform is not good for riders with a wide stance.

Freedive Reef stance

Not good for riders with a tall stance

However, if you are tall or have a wide stance, this deck doesn’t work for you.

For you to use it, you’ll have to force your stance to fit inside the 23inch standing platform – which can be quite uncomfortable if your stance isn’t naturally small.

I think this is a deal-breaker for riders with a taller stance.

Is the concave good?

The concave is great. It isn’t too mellow but it isn’t too aggressive. It’s probably the most ergonomic “slightly aggressive” concave I’ve ever used. And works great for my size 10US/9.5UK feet.

The concave is slightly raised rails, some rocker, micro drop, mellow wheel flares and mellow w. It guides your feet to where you should stand in a very natural way.

Landyachtz Freedive Reef concave explained

I just naturally place my feet where it wants me to without thinking about it. The only time I’m reminded the deck has concave is when I stand on a feature. Writing about it now, I’m surprised.

It’s really good.

Is the micro drop good?

I use a footstop and only make proper use of the micro drop at the back. With the footstop, the micro drop in the front isn’t uncomfortable and doesn’t get in my way. With the footstop, the micro drop feels more like an aggressive wheel flare underfoot.

Landyachtz Freedive Reef micro drop

The combination of micro drop, mellow w, and the concave locks in your feet – I don’t really need a footstop but having one is useful for me regardless.

And because the micro drop isn’t super aggressive or steep, you can quite comfortably place your foot on it.

freedive reef concave

What did I find uncomfortable?

I found the rails to be steep sometimes and uncomfortable under my heels. It was manageable though and didn’t negatively affect my riding experience. But I would be interested to see a Freedive with mellower concave under the heel similar to what the Rocket Micro has.

More on the micro drop

I like how the micro drop meets the wheels flares and the rail. It doesn’t feel awkward to place your feet at that intersection and use the drop. I found it great for pushing against during toesides with my back foot.

toeside corner on the freedive

The drop on this board is gradual and isn’t steep. I think it’s there to provide a feature to use during riding, rather than something functional.

The combination of rocker, flush mounting, and micro-drop does affect stability (positively) and makes the transition into a slide more forgiving, but the micro-drop doesn’t affect riding all that much.

Just something to note.

Is the construction good?

The construction is great. It keeps the board lightweight.

This makes it easy to do ollies, tricks, etc. and makes it easy to carry around.

ollie on the freedive

And the board is stiff. It doesn’t have much torsional flex (for a single-kick maple, composite board). I have no complaints about the stiffness.

Is it durable?

The board also handled impacts pretty well, but I don’t think it is the most durable or impact resistant. The tail has started chipping after heavy use and the nose split after some impacts. Though both are still very usable.

busted nose on the freedive reef - durability

Maybe I’m asking for too much from the board, but I wish it had better impact resistance and the tail lasted a bit longer.

With how hard I am on my decks, I don’t think this deck will last me more than two years of use. But also, popsicle boards usually last a month before being replaced so maybe I’m asking too much durability from the tail for how much I use it? But it is a point of weakness.

If you won’t be using the tail much, don’t worry about this.

And I think the impact absorption will be ok for long time use. Just don’t let your board hit too many curbs.

freedive reef tail -

I think this contributes negatively to impact absorption

Also, the rails are trimmed at an angle (which gives the illusion of a thin deck). But I can’t help but think this contributes negatively to the impact absorption ability of the deck. The outer and topmost ply gets the brunt of most impacts and is usually what splits first.

I reckon if the rail was less angled and more square, the impact would be better distributed between the plys leading to be better long-term durability.

freedive trim

The graphic is scratch-free?

I’m not sure what has been done with the graphic, but it seems to be inside/under a layer of something and has generally not faded away and not been scratched up.

This is super super sick. Never had a deck like this before.

Is it good for rip and grip?

As I said, you can set this board up for ripping and gripping, taking aggressive lines, and using race wheels and sheeeit.

But the micro drop, rocker, and flush mounting reduces how much grip you can squeeze out of your wheels and how much you can manhandle your board. At least that’s how it felt to me.

With a proper top mount board, I felt like I had more control (but also more chances to mess up), but it was a little bit easier to take aggressive lines and be more consistent.

I felt like I could still skate well with the Freedive, but not my best. I wouldn’t pick it for racing, but at the same time, it isn’t a race board … so yeah.

In summary, it does rip and grip good but isn’t a race board.

freedive reef flush mounting

Is it priced fairly?

The deck is made in Canada (not China like most LY boards) and is made with maple and composite.

I think it is on the expensive side, but at the same time, sort of fairly priced for where it is made and the materials used.

The pre-cured fiberglass apparently isn’t cheap and is finicky to get right. I also think it’s (+ some resin) what makes the graphic on the bottom scratch-proof? I could be very wrong about the scratch-proof bit tho.

So perhaps that’s the reason for why it may be so expensive.

It could be cheaper, but for the value of the deck and the use, and how comfortable is for me, I can’t complain.

I also did get it for free, but with my experience with it, I’d be happy to pay full price for another one.

hands up toeside slide longboarding

Is the Freedive wheelbase too short?

The wheelbase can be too narrow (or just right) depending on what you want to use the board for.

The 23-23.5 inch wheelbase makes the board a bit unforgiving for slides but you get used to this. But it is a generally unforgiving wheelbase. You need to make sure you set the board up correctly for what you want to do, otherwise, you may not have a positive riding experience.

For example, if you set the board up with symmetrical trucks and try to skate super fast, then yes the wheelbase would be too narrow to accommodate that. But if you set it up with split-angle trucks and skate fast, the wheelbase is just right.

The 23ish range of wheelbases are tricky as they can very aggressively show you (think violent wobbles or a high side), you haven’t dialed in your board.

Getting the setup right is key for this board, so keep this in mind when you’re purchasing it.

heelside corner, longboarding, landyachtz freedive reef

How deep is the flush mounting and wheel flares?

The flush mounting is about a 1/8inch deep and the wheel flares are about 1/8inch or more deep.

flush mounting on longboard

Is it good for cruising?

Paired with the functional kicktail and smaller wheelbase, this board is nimble enough for the city and works well for cruising.

I’ve had a lot of fun cruising from one spot to the other, ollieing over potholes and road imperfections, dodging obstacles, and other road users.

Is it good for beginners?

I’d say yes and no. If you’re a shorter rider, yes. If you’re taller no. And again no because the space to stand on can be a bit cramped. Not bad for most people, but a longer platform can be more accommodating as you can spread yourself out more comfortably. But riders with a short stance will love this board.

longboard tuck

In terms of stability, it can be a bit unforgiving. Board with longer wheelbases are more stable. But if you keep this board under 30-45mph, you should be ok.

And the 23inch wheelbase can make learning to slide a bit unforgiving. You do get used to this and can use the board well, but I’ve always felt a 25inch wheelbase was better. That said, some people disagree with me on this.

What I didn’t like about the Freedive Reef/what to look out for

My biggest gripe with the board is its durability. I don’t like how the tail held up and how the board handled impacts.

The construction is great, it makes the board lightweight and functional, but you sacrifice long-term durability. I’m not sure what they can do to fix this. Maybe thicker rails?

busted nose freedive reef

The other thing most should look out for is if their stance will fit within the standing platform. Aaand how they set the board up. With the 23-23.5inch wheelbase, this is a key thing to getting the board to work well.

Who is it right for?

I’d say the Freedive Reef is perfect for riders of all experiences, granted they fit within the standing platform.

It’s also amazing for riders looking for one board that can do it all. That said, it’s down to you to make sure it’s set up well for the riding you want to do.

Did you enjoy this review of the Freedive Reef?

I hope this review has been insightful. Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ve been very clear about how this board works (in terms of concave) and how good it’s been to me.

In an odd way, the board feels so natural to me that I don’t even notice what my feet do sometimes – they just know where to go and what to do. It’s almost 2nd nature. And it’s hard to put things you don’t notice into words.

Anyway, let me know what you guys think about the review!

Hey man, I’m looking at buying the freedive, (my board got snapped last night after hitting a pothole during a hill bomb…) but I wanted to know whether I should buy the complete setup or just the deck. I’m pretty much an intermediate downhill rider. I have my basic slides down and usually am bombing hills at around 20-30mph. I’ve never really experimented with different angle trucks nor different bushings, so I don’t really know what I would like. Do you think the stock trucks, wheels, bushings, etc. that come with the freedive would be good for someone like me?

Thanks, Hugh

P.s.: Love the YouTube channel, keep doing what you do!

Nice review ! Really complete, well done. But this board is not for me… I don’t like micro-drops on deck, because it limits the stance, and 23″ is too short for me. And the durability is a bit worrying. I have some boards since 4 years that are in way better condition… Do you try the Original Arbiter KT ? This board looks like the Free Dive, but without micro-drops, and with a lot of wheelbases choices. An awesome concave. And very durable. You maybe should give a try 🙂

I am thinking about the next single kick I’ll ge and I have a few things in mind! Don’t want to spoil but you’ll see them over the next coming month 🙂

You fly for hours, anticipating your arrival, wanting to take in the area and the views of another country far away from your departure airport. The airport and the area you leave from is detailed and visually full, and you know you have a great airport scenery waiting for you at the other end of the flight, then when you arrive...

...  Nothing, but flat plain emptiness and the same boring standard X-Plane basic scenery, worse there is no OSM (Open Street Map) data in the tile either, so there is no road or autogen detailing in there as well, just well nothing.

When Drzewiecki Design released their UUEE Sheremetyevo Airport XP , I loved it because it was like a visitor from the Cold War past, the Soviet era, and it was also great scenery and great choice of a destination to fly to from any of the capitals of Europe...  but that was it, just this great airport in the middle of nothingness, bland....   zero ville.

Moscow old.jpg

Now Drzewiecki Design has released "Moscow City"  a scenery package to compliment their UUEE Sheremetyevo, and boy how much a difference this release has done to this totally boring area.

To get the full first impression effect I flew JARDesign's A320neo from EFHK Vatnaa, Helsinki to UUEE Sheremetyevo which is flight Finnair AY153 which is a daily 9.25am service.

Moscow City_ Dep Vatnaa 1.jpg

First Impressions

I was surprised to start picking up scenery still quite away out from central Moscow, as I approached my 6000ft transition altitude. Here there was buildings and houses and the physical visual notes you were arriving somewhere.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival 1.jpg

Looking hard at the horizon through the A320's windows and you could see the iconic silhouette of Moscow city.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival 5.jpg

The scenery provides lite versions of all Moscow's Airports, this is UUWW Vnukovo, which was easily recognisable as you flew over. As you fly closer to the centre of the city the density of the objects below becomes quite heavy as the landscape fills in. You have all kinds of infrastructure including, blocks of flats, tower blocks, factories, housing, skyscrapers and almost everything that makes up an urban landscape, in all there is 2000 custom-made buildings that makes up this impressive scenery.

A note here in that you don't get that rolling as you move feeling effect where as it just suddenly appears in front of you and then quickly disappears behind as soon as you have flown out over the area. There is a slight effect of that as there has to be, but only in the far distance and as you can see from the images the views in every direction are widespread and visually it is very good to excellent.

The "Seven Sisters" or "Stalinist skyscrapers" built from 1947 to 1953 are all in the scenery with their "Wedding Cake" architecture or officially  Russian Baroque               - Gothic style. Most famous is the Moscow State University, front and centre of the image below.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival LG 16.jpg

Central Moscow is excellent and extremely realistic, and you really need a travel guide to pick out the landmarks and detail, but it is hard to miss the Red Kremlin complex  and St Peter's square from the air.  Both sides of the aircraft is visually full until you have crossed right over the city.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival 7.jpg

I am not a fan of the generated 3d OSM scenery, but this is very good in blending in perfectly with the X-Plane default scenery and giving you a smooth transition from country to urban and back again with great realism.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival 14.jpg

Over the city and turning north towards Sheremetyevo, another Moscow airport UUMU Chkalovsky is represented on the turn.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival 17.jpg

The city skyline is now easily visible on landing at Sheremetyevo, and that really helps in the arrival factor, more so in that the cities building infrastructure spread now comes up and around the airport to fill the gaps to the city itself, and making the original  Sheremetyevo scenery that was so open and lonely in the old X-Plane view is now a big part of the whole in this combination. No doubt it really brings this always good scenery now alive and very usable.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival 19.jpg

Sheremetyevo Airport

Before we move on to the city itself. It is important to note the area around UUEE Sheremetyevo itself.

Moscow Sheremetyevo 1.jpg

Compare the large image above to the earlier image at the start of this review to see the amount of change there is around UUEE Sheremetyevo with the addition of this Moscow City package. The two sceneries are of course meant to be used together, and in reality it would look odd if you had Moscow City scenery installed without the Sheremetyevo scenery included to fill out the northern areas. A highlight is that both sceneries together form a single whole, as the areas between the airport and the central city area are well filled in and that gives you a huge area of coverage and the full visual aspect.

To get a closer lower look at the Moscow Center I commandeered Dreamfoil's lovely Bell 407.

Moscow Buildings 1.jpg

There is a 4.000km² total area covered with this scenery here, and you have expect some sort of building replication to cover all that ground. There is of course but as well in the fact there is also enough variations as to not keep it all interesting and not obviously visually obvious.

Moscow Buildings 2.jpg

The closer you go to the central area, the variations in the buildings change there in style and density as well. And then more of the iconic buildings start to appear as you get closer in again to the middle. The business district is excellent, with a lot of business towers and the more modern futuristic skyscraper architecture that stands out in every view point in eye scans across the city.

Moscow Buildings 5.jpg

The more recent is in tune with the more older Stalinist era that makes up the Moscow skyline.

The Kremlin Complex and the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed (St Basil's) is excellently represented and so is "Red Square"

Moscow Buildings 10.jpg

There are Orthodox churches everywhere and all the big icons in the Moscow Cathedral Mosque, Cathedral of Christ the Savior, Grand Arena of the Central Lenin Stadium, Otkrytive Arena and department stores, museums and power stations and more....

I did have issues with many buildings floating, including the Kremlin. I tried both "Runways follow terrain contours" on and off with no flattening of the objects and there is no information in the manual either on how to fix the problem.

Night lighting is very good, yes there is again a repeatable pattern to the majority of the hundreds of the apartment blocks that does stand out, but the more individual buildings do all have that personal touch and some buildings look really very good.

Moscow Buildings Night 1.jpg

The highlight here is the business district which looks magnificent and is very realistic from any direction at night as is the lit Stadium.

Moscow Buildings Night 3.jpg

Although away from the central area the Ostankino Tower that stands 540.1 metres (1,772 ft) tall, and is the tallest freestanding structure in Europe and it looks great at night and is a very good position indicator from the air from any direction.

Included Moscow Airports

As noted also included in the scenery are seven airports and several helipads.

UUWW Vnukovo

Moscow UUWW Vnukovo 1.jpg

The futuristic Vnukovo International is very good for a lite version, with great terminals and lots of small detailing. Only thing missing is the static aircraft and a bit more ramp equipment, but otherwise it is highly usable.

UUDD Domodedovo

Moscow UUDD Domodedovo 1.jpg

The oldest of Moscow's International airports is Domodedovo. Again it is quite devoid of static aircraft and I am not crazy about the blue terminal glass work, but it is still a very workable scenery to use and has a lot of well made objects.

UUBW Zhukovsky

Moscow UUBW Zhukovsky 1.jpg

Zhukovsky was a major aircraft testing facility since the  cold war years, with most of the major Russian Experimental Design Bureau's having facilities here. It is also now used by the Ministry of Emergency Situations! and cargo carriers. It was also used as a test site for the Soviet Buran  reusable Spacecraft because it has the world's second longest pubic runway at at 5,402 m (17,723 ft). Mostly it is a collection of very large hangars but has a lot of static aircraft in storage.

UUMO Ostafyevo International Business Airport

Moscow UUMo Ostafyevo 1.jpg

A former military airbase. Ostafyevo features a new modern glass terminal, and caters primarily to business aviation.

UUMU Chkalovsky

Moscow UUMU Chkalovsky 1.jpg

Chkalovsky is a military logistics airport that is famous for it's support for the Russian Space program and transport to Star City and the Yuri A. Gagarin State Scientific Research-and-Testing Cosmonaut Training Center. Yuri Gagarin left here on his final flight before crashing by the town of Kirzhach.

UUBM Myachkovo Airport

Moscow UUBM Myachkovo 1.jpg

Myachkovo is a small General Aviation Airport that is owned by the Finpromko company. Cargo aircraft up to the size of the Ilyushin ll-76 freighter can also use the airport.

UUMB Kubinka

Moscow UUMB Kubinka 1.jpg

Kubinka has been a significant Russian military airbase and large airshows are held here to show off the Russian military might.

There is also provided UUU1 Kremlin Airport, within the Kremlin walls, but I couldn't get it to work? There are two pads in H1 and H2.

Your first thoughts after reviewing this excellent Moscow scenery is not with this actual package. You then wish that you could have this extensive scenery at London, Rome, Madrid, Berlin and the list could go on with any of your favorite European Cities, and don't count a load in the Middle East and Asia. But a London scenery like this would certainly be a godsend in our X-Plane world. Drzewiecki Design has already done Warsaw and Manhattan, so there is always hope.

It is not cheap either and you need to add in their UUEE Sheremetyevo scenery package on top of that as well. But you get an awful lot of ground covered here for your money, with the area covered here that is extensive...  huge and flying into Moscow will never be the same again.

A few areas to note in one that in my case a few of the buildings floated, the download is huge load at 1.4gb and this Russian area is not the best for navigation aids and programming FMS units as most waypoints are not recognised. Most of the airports ILS coordinates also have to checked and recalibrated (Drzewiecki Design do provide all the correct coordinates) so there is a little work to do to set up repeat services but the work is worth the results.

Not only is the actual Moscow city and all it's buildings supported, you also get seven (if lite versions) of Moscow's other airports included as well, but the framerate processing of all this huge amount of objects and scale is pretty good to excellent. Framerate does hurt more on a lower (helicopter) level and certainly you need a computer with a little extra power is in no doubt required, but overall for the size of the area the scenery is extremely efficient.

Yes I was impressed by this Moscow City Scenery, as this once very barren area of X-Plane is now a very attractive repeat destination as nothing can give you a greater fulfilment than seeing your destination appear in the distance and then give you a huge visual experience as you fly over and approach your destination.

Moscow City certainly delivers that and more...  Just more sceneries like this please!

Thank you for this very thorough (as always) review. I just bought it (it's on sale) and have only one disappointment so far: Red Square has no ILS or any landing aids at all for that matter. And what a nightmare of an approach! Also I was hoping the package would include an add-on that gives my c172 a big cup holder for my Stoli. Otherwise the scenery is gorgeous. What a country!

Review: Moscow City Ballet’s The Nutcracker at The Regent Theatre*

Review: Moscow City Ballet's The Nutcracker at The Regent Theatre

Last night, we went to see the magical story of The Nutcracker by the Moscow City Ballet at The Regent Theatre . Traditionally a Christmas tale, however, the Moscow City Ballet are currently just starting their UK 2020 Tour, which is due to last the next couple of months. On their roster, is Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty and of course the Nutcracker, all being played in various cities around the UK and also three special performances (of each story) in Dublin.

Moscow City Ballet was started back in 1988 by the acclaimed choreographer Victor Smirnov-Golovanov, who sadly passed away in 2013. The company was taken over by his wife Ludmila Nerubashenko as Artistic Director. She had been Principle Ballet Mistress since 1993, therefore, was well equipped to take over his role. Smirnov-Golovanov’s concept was to allow artist licence to his dancers, with certain aspects of the choreography, allowing them the freedom to add in parts to the dance as long as they didn’t sway too far from the original choreographic concept.

Review: Moscow City Ballet's The Nutcracker at The Regent Theatre

What we thought of the Nutcracker

The Nutcracker, originally a story by Prussian writer E.T.A. Hoffman, written in 1814, and then adapted by the famous French writer Alexandre Dumas in 1844. This adaptation, then went onto be the inspiration for  Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Ballet of the same name which was completed in 1892.

Tchaikovsky iconic score of this Ballet is recognisable by all ages through all generations. I am sure you will remember as a child seeing or opening the classic children’s jewellery boxes that contained a dancing ballerina playing the music from this beautiful ballet? You will have heard the music on TV adverts, films and even weaved within nursery rhymes.

The Ballet begins with the Christmas Eve Party, where Clara first sees the Nutcracker. During this time the dancers are introducing you to the characters of the Nutcracker, the doll and the Mouse King. After the loosely choreographed first scene the dancers awoke to their centre stage performance that became a total delight. In scene two you are taken to the enchanted Forest where the blue tutus of the Ballerinas bounce, as their synchronised toes float across the stage.

The orchestra, although quiet at times, played beautifully and perfectly matched the pitter-patter of the ballet dancers movements across the boards of the theatre. As previously mentioned its such an iconic score and so delightful to hear live, however, it was a shame that it did at times lack a bit of oompf you would expect. I am not sure if this was down to the size of the orchestra or the dynamics of The Regent Theatre. That being said – my feet were still tapping at the most recognisable parts.

The second act makes for a truly magical performance, where the dancing flowers and fairies decorate the stage. We see how skilled some of the ballet dancers are as they jump and drift across the floor. It is with this combination of elegant movement and classical music, that makes the Nutcracker the perfect Ballet for those young and old who want to hold onto the magic of Christmas whatever the season.

Review: Moscow City Ballet's The Nutcracker at The Regent Theatre

Each ending in many different productions of this classic tale over the years have been different, and this also includes aspects of the narrative in the middle too. But Each one means that if you have seen this Ballet several times over the years, it means that you more than likely won’t have seen the same one!

Review: Moscow City Ballet's The Nutcracker at The Regent Theatre

  • Parking is ample either around the public car parks close to The Regent, but do check the rules. Some parking lots might need you to pay even at night. We parked up at intu Potteries and that cost us £1 (its fixed rate after 6pm).
  • The Regent also provides binoculars (usually located at the back of each seat) for £1.
  • Programme Booklets are usually on sale for £5, full details of the show and cast members are featured on it.
  • The Regent is a beautiful theatre with ornate decor and traditional seating. It has plenty of performances out throughout the year and lots of variety.

About Regent Theatre

The Regent Theatre is a theatre in Stoke-on-Trent, England. Constructed in 1929 as a cinema, it is one of several theatres in the city centre and one of two owned by the Ambassador Theatre Group. The building was converted for full-time use as a theatre in 1999, and since then has hosted a number of shows and musicals. The theatre is also the northern base for the Glyndebourne Touring Opera.

About Moscow City Ballet

The Moscow City Ballet was founded in 1988 by the distinguished Russian choreographer Victor Smirnov-Golovanov, with the aim to promote the original ideas of the great 19th and 20th century Russian choreographers.  The birth of the company was a direct outcome of the sweeping changes in the Soviet Union in the late 1980s, where “Glastnost” and “Perestroyka” made the private enterprise legal again and Moscow City Ballet was the first privately owned ballet company in the USSR. It’s original name “The New Ballet of Moscow” was deemed too descriptive and the new name, “The Moscow City Ballet” was adopted in 1990.  The company remains true to its original ideals, showcasing some of the greatest works of the Russian and Soviet ballet heritage.  Its new aim is to preserve the legacy of late Victor Smirnov-Golovanov’s original choreography, with the ballets such as The Nutcracker, Cinderella and Romeo and Juliet having been exclusively choreographed by Victor for the Moscow City Ballet.

The company’s first appearance was in 1989 in Seoul, Korea. Its success outside of Russia makes it one of Russia’s most extensively touring ballet companies. Since 1988, Moscow City Ballet has appeared in Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Germany, Hong-Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jersey, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Netherlands, People’s Republic of China, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Republic Korea, R.O.C. Taiwan, Romania, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States of America and, naturally, in Russia itself.  The company’s greatest success has been in the United Kingdom where it has given more than 1000 performances since 1991, accompanied by the Moscow City Ballet Orchestra.

Moscow City Ballet is one of Russia’s most successful and popular touring ballet companies, highly admired for its distinctive style, dramatic story‐telling, exciting choreography and exceptionally gifted dancers. Under the artistic direction of Victor Smirnov-Golovanov’s widow, Ludmila Neroubashchenko, the company continues to be committed to promoting ballet in the Russian classical tradition to audiences all over the world.

I would love to see this ballet but mistakenly thought it was being performed in March 2020. So disappointed to have missed it but hopefully it will return to the Regent Theatre sometime in the not too distant future!

They are touring around the UK Rota, so worth checking out their website to see where they are headed to next, not too sure if they will head back to The Regent Theatre this year.

Freedive Reef (6227634290877)

Freedive - Reef

Developed by team riders Matt Noseworthy and Clayton Arthurs, the Freedive is the single kick freeride machine your quiver has been missing. Subtle, perfectly integrated features combine with Made in Canada quality to provide a comfortable, high performance freeride board that you need to ride to believe.

One Board One Tree

To give back to the environment we have decided that for every skateboard we sell, we plant a tree. One tree produces at least 60 boards. So with our program, one tree will turn into at least 60 new trees planted.

100% Canadian Maple

Canadian Maple is a strong and proven material used in the world’s best skateboards. We source only the finest veneers found in Eastern Canada.

Concave designed to really lock your feet in while adding responsiveness and control.

Take your skating into the third dimension with a kicktail. We design our kicktails to work perfectly with each deck shape as well as with the truck and wheel setup on each complete.

MULTI WHEELBASE

Precisely dial in your ride with multiple mounting options for your trucks.

PRE-CURED FIBERGLASS

Fiberglass is a lightweight yet extremely resilient material, used to either add extra stiffness to a solid maple board, or replace some maple plys and provide a snappy flex to a thinner flexy board.

Also known as pressed wheel wells, flares are part of the board shape. The resulting bumps in the concave on top allow for larger wheels, looser trucks, and provide better control and more precise foot placement.

Watch the Freedive Reef in action

The Freedive is a stiff, high performance downhill board that is 36.8” long by 9.6” wide with variable wheelbases from 23 to 23.5”. It features subtle micro drops and wheel flares to keep your feet planted over the trucks and flushmounts to keep the ride height where it needs to be and your trucks running flat. It is pressed in Kimberley, BC from 7 plies of Canadian Maple and 1 ply of fiberglass for extra torsional stiffness and durability. We set these completes up with 155mm Gen 6 Grizzlies on 40 degree baseplates for a confident, stable ride, as well as 70mm 78a Supremes for super smooth slides with just enough grip.

We design our trucks and wheels to fit perfectly with each individual deck. We work tirelessly to ensure these elements come together to provide the best control and performance for your board. No slop, all control. Don't accept anything less than the perfect complete.   Learn More >

Flex Rating

Flex has a big impact on the overall feel of your board and is influenced by a bunch of different factors. The main ones being thickness of the deck, it's wheelbase and rider weight. To put the equation in laymans terms: more flex occurs when you decrease thickness of the deck, increase the wheelbase and increase rider weight. The more flex in your board the more carvy and agile it'll feel, less flex means it's more stable and suited for faster skating. We test every complete with a device we built in house, specifically to standardize flex ratings.

Decent Set-up

I took advantage of the recent sales and Grabbed two set ups. I can say that I am satisfied with the price and quality. The freedive Reef demands a little bit of a short stance with your feet. It is good for most people 5,10 and under. I am 5,9 but like a slightly wider stance. Still a great board. I recommend for beginners as well as more seasoned riders looking for a board that is all around and good at a little bit of everything. I put Vicious grip tape, RipTide foot stop, Venom bushings, Various wheels. 81a snakes pictured for big slides.

  • On Rough Pavement

This is a really good board as a complete

I bought this as a complete knowing I would screw with it. I rode it out of the box and it was pretty damn good. But, on the trucks I ditched the cones for barrels roadside and put high duros board side and it's now fun AF. I put 1/4" risers on it in anticipation of getting Cheetah wheels but got fucked on those (LY customer service needs tweaking). Even so, the 70 mm mint Hawgs are good wheels and did well until I put Seismic speed vents on it and now it really rocks.

Bottom line is that it's great out the box. The deck is about as good as it gets for me (I have dozens decks from 70s to present)--just the right amount of concave, width and length for me (5'10", 10 shoe size,). The Grizzly trucks are good--just set them up with bushings to your liking. Maybe add some 1/8" shock pads to kill some vibes on rough roads.

I highly recommend this board.

Recommend for big riders

I ordered the complete setup and it has been absolutely amazing!! I am 6 ft 5in tall and weigh 300lbs and this board holds me with no give. I have only been about 10km on it, but it was a blast to ride!

Amazing Board

Has a lot of maneuverability, perfect for the hills in my town. Love the stuff deck with the fibreglass.

  • Race Courses

Cant find a better board!

The board is the perfect stiffness, very stiff with still a little bit of give. Feels very good under the feet. The graphic is really nice and is my favourite board so far. Recommend to anyone trying to learn to slide or if already experienced. One thing that would be nice is if it came with EZ Hawgs, unless your roads are rougher.

A Magazine for Those With a Passion to Travel in Style

Moscow: An Honest Review of this Amazing City

“ You’re going to Russia?!?! Why? ” I heard these words pretty much every time I announced my upcoming trip to the east.

This reaction is understandable. Most people in Europe and the United States have a Putin-provoked distaste of the Russian Federation, which is growing by the day. Politicians claim that Russia’s sole mission is to diminish and undermine western powers to strengthen its own. After all, the name Vladimir comes from two old Slavic words, which together mean “great ruler of the world.” Make of that what you will…

Even the non-political vision of Russia is unfavorable. Most think of a cold, grey, backward place with Soviet architecture or battle-hardened, weather-beaten people. However, arriving at the sleek Moscow Domodedovo airport, I was impressed. I had been right to rebut popular notions of an unwelcoming and stony place.

However, almost immediately after leaving the airport, the ground for my righteous vindication became shaky. Driving into the outskirts of Moscow, my mind drew comparisons to television images of North Korean suburbs. Miles of uniform houses and bleak tower blocks lined the roads.

At the Izmailovov Delta Hotel next to the famous market of the same name, things were not looking much better. Truly peculiar decorations and violently colored walls competed for one’s gaze in the hotel lobby. Luckily, the rooms themselves were perfectly comfortable, though not particularly noteworthy. I’d stay central next time.

After dropping bags, I ventured toward the Izmailovov market for a look at how the locals live. From a distance, the buildings that encase the market are vivid, intricate and quite something to behold. As it was late in the day, the market was empty. Shop shutters were closed and stalls were folded up. I got the same uneasy feeling I get when walking through Disney Land – as if this was what remained after the recent collapse of a utopian society.

While nearly all the vendors had packed up and gone home, a few stalls remained opened for business. All that was left was an abundance of satirical matryoshka dolls containing various countries’ political leaders in historical order.

A tattooed burly salesman came over to me as I withdrew François Mitterrand from the wooden bowels of Valéry Giscard d’Estaing.

“ Where are you from, friend? ” He asked.

Ignoring my response, he launched into a speech about his armed forces days and the political situation in Russia.

“ You really ought not to trust the government, ok? Putin is a dangerous man, you see. Someone’s always watching in this city. ”

The whiff of Glühwein that carried with each sentence made me doubt the erudition of his analysis. Then again… this is what we hear in the news. I was not sure what to believe. After thanking the man and hastily filling Charles de Gaulle with the rest of the presidents of the Fifth Republic, I made my way back to the hotel.

Emerging from the underground we rounded the corner and immediately found ourselves in Red Square. The sight demands you stop and stare.

The insurmountable walls of the Kremlin line the length of one side; halfway along lies Lenin’s tomb and opposite is the lavish exterior of the Gosudarstvennyi Universalnyi Magazin shopping center (or GUM, as it’s referred to, thank God). The architectural marvel of Saint Basil’s Cathedral stands at the south end, with the State History Museum at the other. Even though the foreboding structures radiate a rouge pastel hue into every corner of the square, there is a sense of openness. No-doubt there was a somewhat different atmosphere when thousands of Soviet soldiers goose-stepped through the square. Interestingly, the Russian army still marches like this today.

Walking around central Moscow, history oozes from every spire and pillar. Buildings seem to lean over as you walk past, as if peering down on whoever dares to enter these austere places. For every moment or event in Russian history, there is a dedicated museum.

The quality of each museum is notably high. In particular, the Armory inside the Kremlin holds astonishing collections of royal carriages from across the world and throughout the ages. The world-renowned Fabergé Eggs are displayed here too.

Having wandered around for so long during the day, we had no time to eat before attending the Ballet that evening. Sitting in the Bolshoi, the long day began to catch up with me.

It is now that I must make a confession: while attending a performance by one of the world’s greatest ballet companies, I fell asleep.

Thankfully, I woke up later in the second half and was treated to the final leaps and prances of Shostakovich’s The Bright Stream. As someone who is not a ballet aficionado, that was probably enough.

Feeling significantly perkier afterward, a late dinner was in order. Just behind the Bolshoi is VOGUE Café , a gastronomic outpost of the famous magazine. It claimed to serve an eclectic mix of Japanese, Italian and Russian dishes. Intrigued, we entered.

Adventurously, we accepted the offer of some Russian wine. Full bodied and berried, it was delicious. Our evident surprise led the waitress to explain that Russian food and drink has improved hugely over the last few years. As it turns out, since the United States and the European Union placed sanctions on Russia after their annexation of Crimea, food imports have been scarce. As a result, Russian producers have been forced to meet the demand and quality expected today. As a result, Siberian wines and cheeses now win awards around the globe.

When we left the restaurant, it was late. Only a day had passed, yet we had filled every minute with history, culture and food. The next three days followed a similar format and we continued to make our way down the list of museums and sights. A boat ride along the river is a must-do for alternative views of the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Afterwards, sit on the rooftop Strelka bar opposite the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and watch the 3-mile-long line of pilgrims move slowly forward.

On the third day, we were due to board an overnight train to Saint Petersburg, but there was still so much left to do. Truth be told, it was probably too much for another three days, let alone one.

Nonetheless, I was satisfied. Moscow had revealed itself to be a fascinating and impressive city. While the city infrastructure isn’t as up-to-date as most capitals, the needs of every modern traveler can be met. It certainly isn’t the cold and unfriendly place envisioned by most in the west. Moscow’s winning attribute is its omnipresent sense of untouched history. This is a feature that is so often lost amongst hordes of tourists in Europe’s capitals.

It goes to show: what we hear about places we haven’t been in the news or through general hearsay, we can formulate pretty strong prejudices in our mind. While the political realities may still be ugly, by visiting, you can learn to separate and appreciate the everyday, the culture and the history of a place. On one side of a great red wall in central Moscow, a tyrannical leader works. On the other side, wholly separated, lies a magnificent Red Square where an overwhelming sense of history reveals the essence of Moscow and of Russia. And it is truly remarkable.

During the 20th century, the square became famous as the site for demonstrations designed to showcase Soviet strength. Visiting the Red Square today, you’ll find it teeming with tourists, who come to witness its magical architecture up close!

The Red Square

The square is the picture postcard of Russian tourism, so make sure to bring your camera when you visit! No matter the season, or the time of day, it’s delightfully photogenic!

It’s also home to some of Russia’s most distinguishing and important landmarks, which we’ve made sure to include further down in this itinerary. It’s an important center of Russia’s cultural life and one of the top places to visit in Moscow!

Day 1 / Stop 2 – The Moscow Kremlin

  • Why it’s awesome: The Moscow Kremlin complex includes several palaces and cathedrals and is surrounded by the Kremlin wall. It also houses the principal museum of Russia (the Kremlin Armory).

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .
