2021 MJM Yachts 53 Series

mjm yachts photos

For those looking for a little speed to get their pulses racing this summer, look no further than MJM Yachts’ new 53 series yacht. The MJM 53 offers a versatility rarely seen in the market, as buyers can choose from a wealth of layouts, and as well as from both the 53zi inboard and 53z outboard options.

With its swift outboard engines, the 53z speedster allows you to enjoy all the comfort of the yachting lifestyle, along with the freedom, ease, and convenience of a shallower draft that makes it ideal for weekend adventuring. Billed as the largest outboard express cruiser, the 53z tops out at an astounding 50 MPH from its muscular 300hp quad Mercury Verado engines (400hp is optional) and handles like a top-of-the-line sports car. Even at moderate speeds, the Verado engines produce very little noise and are mostly hidden behind the transom. The 53zi option features extremely efficient inboard engines that reach cruising speeds of 36 knots, a feature owners and operators will surely appreciate.

While the 53 is built for excitement, it also has luxury accommodations for up to seven people belowdecks. For the first time, MJM is offering a two-cabin dual master suite in its standard layout, including en suite heads with glass-wall showers. There are four other layout options available, including a family-friendly design with twin bed berths.  Just three steps up on the flush bridge deck, boaters can enjoy a spacious, open layout with moveable chairs and memory-foam settees that can be converted into berths.

Breath in that fresh summer air. A truly remarkable feature, the pilothouse can be fully opened with roll-up sides or sliding glass windows, along with the aft end and electric front windows, to let in the sunshine and summer sea breezes for a feeling of openness. To protect from the sun, an optional, full-length Bimini top is available. And when the regular Northwest weather returns in the fall, the windows can all clamp down shut, making the 53 a flexible, climate-controlled, all-season boat.

The galley features Corian countertops, cherrywood cabinetry, a skylight for ventilation, and a recessed sink with a removable cutting-board cover. Appliances include a 5.5-cubic-foot refrigerator, a two-burner induction cooktop, and a convection/microwave oven. An aft serving bar helps keep guests entertained, with an icemaker and tumbler storage.

Using high-tech, epoxy-composite materials, MJM has made the hull both lighter and stronger than previous models. The Doug Zurn-designed hull also has a 3.5:1 waterline length-to-beam ratio, giving it smooth stability at any speed. An optional Seakeeper gyro stabilizer can be added to reduce 93% of the boats roll, even when moored at the dock.

For pilothouse navigation, the helm features two Stidd 500 seats and a 24-inch, varnished teak Edson destroyer wheel, plus a teak chart table. Electronic equipment includes a suite of Raymarine products, such as a gS 165 Hybrid Touch GPS plotter, a multi-display fathometer, a 24-inch radar with dome, Ray 218 VHF, and an AIS 650 tracking system. In the 53 z, the quad engines are operated with a Mercury VesselView MFD controller and joystick piloting system, with Skyhook and autopilot functions.

To see this sleek beauty for yourself, be sure to hop aboard a similar MJM model with triple Volvo IPS 650s that will be on display next month at the Sail Northwest slip during the South Lake Union Boats Afloat Show that runs from September 16-19.

All-New MJM 42 Marks the 'Evolution of a Dream'

By: BoatBlurb Staff

2022 MJM 42 cruiser

North Carolina builder MJM yachts has unveiled an impressive cruiser for the East Coast market.

The all-new MJM 42 is a performance cruiser that will be offered with significant power in both outboard and inboard configurations.

The 42'8" LOA and 12' beam will need the added push generated by either twin 600 hp Mercury outboards or either twin Volvo 400 hp or 440 hp inboards with DPI drives .

Top speeds are expected to be about 44 knots (50 mph) depending on the power configuration.

The company refers to the 42 as the "Evolution of a Dream" that will offer a "luxury, cruising oriented performance yacht with striking exterior lines and a dynamic interior designed for liveaboard cruising."

The boat was designed by renowned engineer Michael Peters , who has an extensive portfolio with other notable brands including Chris-Craft, Bertram, Valhalla, and more.

Standout features include an impressive all-weather pilothouse, a large helm sofa and lounge (by doing away with a co-pilot station), a U-shaped dining area with a topside galley, and an oversized beach deck and transom gate.

The area below deck is highlighted by extended hull and trunk cabin windows that create generous ambient light, as well as a spacious forepeak stateroom. An open floor plan is also notable with impressive storage capacity, as well as a midship berth.

The overall design is bred from MJM reputed MJM 40 model but offers greater room, more amenities, and an enhanced hull design that further showcases the company's unique "Carolina Downeast" flared lines, minimal tumblehome, and raised trunk cabin.

You can get the first look at the new 42 in the video below:

He is an active racer, recently racing in the J/70 fleet at Quantum Key West Race Week and aboard the J/130 Dragonly in the 2012 Newport Bermuda Race.

MJM Yachts

The MJM Story

A boating passion.

MJM Yachts was founded in 2002 by Bob Johnstone, who, in 1977 co-founded J/ Boats, Inc., the world’s leading brand of performance sailboats. J/Boats currently has 15,000 boats sailing worldwide and 20+ Boat of the Year awards to its credit. Bob is a member of the National Sailing Hall of Fame and recipient of the prestigious Mystic Seaport America and the Sea honor.

When Bob retired from J/Boats, he didn’t retire from boating, you may say he did more boating by cruising the coast from Newport to Maine with his Wife Mary in a powerboat. Asked why the move to power, Bob replied, “we got older, so our boats had to reverse roles. I can enjoy a day sail on the latest J/, but quality cruising time is on a motorboat.” And, not just any motorboat, Mary Johnstone’s Motorboat.

The boat that could easily be docked single-handed, seat three couples comfortably in an all-weather pilothouse and cruise at 25+ knots to outrun waves offshore didn’t exist in ‘02. So, as he did at J/Boats, Bob created a new boat, feeling confident that others would be like-minded in wanting a more practical, fun, easier-to-own boat. Bob’s wife Mary was the inspiration for the name. The brand became MJM – Mary Johnstone’s Motorboat.

Bob and Mary Johnstone MJM Yachts

Priority one was to find a yacht designer with the best eye in the business to draw a pretty boat combining the features of Bob’s favorite powerboats: the powder-horn sheer of a WW II Elco PT Boat, the bow flare of a Carolina sportfish, the sexy tumblehome of an Adirondack runabout, the 360°sightlines of a 1950’s Matthews cruiser and the open pilothouse and flush deck of a Maine lobster boat. So, with son Peter (former-CEO of Sunfish Laser & founder of Gunboat), they brainstormed. A month later the signature MJM look was born.

No powerboat builder could be found with the hi-tech experience required to build a boat that met Bob’s marketing goal of “best performing brand.” So, he went back to his sailboat roots and found a master builder who’d been building America’s Cup and world championship winning sailboats for 35 years to partner with. MJM makes sure that each new model meets their personal standard: Best performing brand.

Fast forward to 2019 and a now retired Bob turned over the helm to Son Peter, as the new owner and Chairman. Seeing opportunities to embrace available technology to improve the build process and materials, Peter established Pamlico Yachtworks in Washington, NC in 2021. Under Peter’s guidance, MJM was now the builder and the MJM team would continue to tweak and improve the existing MJM 35, and launch the new, open bow MJM 3 day yacht.

mjm yachts photos

MJM has become the leader for all-weather/all-conditions capably day and cruising performance yachts. Now built utilizing the vacuum infused, post-cured, Epoxy composite process resulting in a stronger, lighter, faster, more efficient yacht. This process, combined with the advanced hull geometry delivers an impressive and class leader ride stability and smoothness.

To experience an MJM firsthand, connect with one of dealer partners or email [email protected] .

By 2021, all design and engineering were also inhouse, increasing efficiency and responsiveness to the market.

In 2022 MJM unveiled the MJM 4, a remarkable 46-foot, open bow outboard express day yacht with very comfortable overnight capabilities. This model, in combination with the MJM 3, and the increased popularity of the proven MJM 35 drove a dramatic and sustained growth of new boat orders.

Leading the market segment in sales, and with the newest MJM cruising model, the MJM 42 under construction, demand for new MJM’s was exponential. Late in 2023, MJM Yachts LLC was acquired by Saothair Capital Partners, LLC ("Saothair"), a private equity firm specializing exclusively in middle-market manufacturing and industrial companies, has acquired the business and assets of MJM Yachts ("MJM") through its newly formed affiliate, Seolta Holdings, LLC (“Seolta”). Peter Johnstone maintains a minority ownership and has been appointed as President and Chief Executive Officer of Seolta.
