Restaurants, food and drink | brewery day trips: into morgan territory for beer and barley wine.
For the fifth stop on my Bay Area brewery tour — thank you, readers, for your great itinerary suggestions! — I ventured out to Tracy to visit one of the unsung heroes of local brewing.
Morgan Territory Regional Preserve, a 5,230-acre park near Mount Diablo, named for 1850s settler Jeremiah Morgan, is actually northwest of town. But the park’s name provided the inspiration for the award-winning Morgan Territory Brewing in Tracy.
Morgan Territory
Morgan Territory Brewing Co. was founded by Michael LaCross, co-owner of the now-shuttered Schooner’s Grille & Brewery in Antioch, and brewmaster Craig Cauwels, who left a science career at Harvard to combine his two passions — molecular biology and beer.
Today, Morgan Territory brews six year-round beers, half a dozen rotating seasonals and various specialty beers and one-offs. Moon Time, a hazy IPA brewed with Vic Secret, Citra and Mosaic hop varieties, is the brewery’s best-selling beer by a wide margin. Other year-round beers include Share and Enjoy lager, Motorboatin’ IPA and Bee’s Better Have My Honey, an American wheat beer brewed with oranges and honey.
Happily, they’re also still brewing Old Diablo Barley Wine, which is simply one of the best barley wines you’ll find anywhere. It has won gold medals at the Great American Beer Festival, the World Beer Cup and the California State Fair, and was declared best beer at the Toronado Barley Wine Festival. The barrel-aged version on tap right now is simply sublime.
You’ll find Morgan Territory beers at restaurants, bars and specialty markets throughout the Bay Area. (Check the beer finder at https://morganterritorybrewing.com for locations.)
Or make a day of it and visit them in Tracy. It may be the best reason of all to drive over the Altamont Pass. The taproom, which offers 16 different brews at any given time, plus a hard seltzer, opens at 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday and noon Friday through Sunday at 1885 N. MacArthur Drive. They offer growler and crowler fills, snacks and brewery merchandise, too.
Bay Boys Brewing
Tracy’s second craft brewery celebrated its grand opening just last week Bay Boys Brewing hails from Lannie Duncan and Max Tolstoguzov, two South Bay homebrewers — San Jose and Milpitas — who met through their love of cars. Two years in the planning, the new brewery is tucked in a former outlet mall. The spacious taproom has a stage for live music, pool tables, dartboards, board games and multiple big screen TVs — a true hang out spot.
The brewery offers 16 beers at any given time. Among them: Dub Melon, a watermelon wheat; Russian Ale, a cream ale; and Grinding Grounds Coffee Stout, which is brewed with coffee from the local Grinding Grounds coffee shop. IPA lovers will enjoy the Cali Daze hazy, a #BayBoys West Coast IPA and Fog City, a hazy session IPA.

Mike Beggs is drinking a Metalmark Marzen by Morgan Territory Brewing at Untappd at Home. Delicious roasted caramelized malts with a bread and grain richness.
