Fun and interesting information but repetitive if you have taken other tours. We soaked up the sun on the top deck with an adult beverage and enjoyed just being on the river Read more Written April 11, 2024
  • richardc167 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Worthwhile experience Very much enjoyed the cruise. There was informative narration during much of the trip. Savannah is 3rd busiest port in the US and is expanding. Saw some port facilities and then various places along the river headed towards the Atlantic. Seating inside and outside. Glad we scheduled this cruise as part of visit to Savannah. Read more Written April 9, 2024

  • 752bethanyk 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles It was a pretty Off-Putting cruise today... narrator/ sites were fine but management and staff are questionable... The experience of a riverboat cruise is what we were looking most forward to on this trip to Savannah. The boat/ tour narrator deserves 5 stars but because of my experience I would rate it an overall 2 or 3 stars. My husband and I went on the lunch/site seeing cruise around 1pm. The buffet style food was very good but I found a long black hair in my mashed potatoes which really put me off. I didn't bring it to the staffs attention because accidents happen and we were trying to enjoy the afternoon on the boat. I decided to order a smoothy that comes in a souvenir cup and asked our waitress if I place the order with her or at the bar. She was very nice and said she would get that for me. Once she returned I asked if I pay now or at the end of the cruise for the drink. She said I can pay at the end but to come find her. My husband and I went to the upper deck to enjoy the sites and as I was drinking the smoothy I sucked up a peice of some type of flimsy metal thing, i'm not sure what it was but I am glad I didnt swallow it. I stopped drinking the smoothy because I didn't know what else was in it. As the boat was about to dock we went downstairs to pay at the bar and show the manager that there had been something in the drink just so they were aware. The woman at the bar looked at the peice of metal (which she took bare handed even though I told her it had been in my mouth and she said she didnt care), then threw my drink/souvenir cup away and offered to make me another peach smoothy. I excepted the new drink and had my card ready to pay for it when she told me not to worry about it because she wasn't going to make me pay for a drink that had something nasty in it. I said are you sure? She said yes, I told her thank you and then my husband and I went on our way to leave the boat. We made it off the boat when I hear a woman calling "ma'am! You forgot to pay for that!" I turn around to see our waitress running off the ship towards us....I told her, "I'm sorry you came all the way down here but the employee at the bar told me I didn't need to pay for the drink because there was some piece of metal in it." She said oh I had thought you just forgot to pay, but anyways my manager said you still have to pay for the original tab... I looked at her and said I have no problem doing that, that was why I came up to the bar in the first place so I could find you and pay for my drink and also let the manager know they had some metal material in my drink, I'm not trying to steal a 12 dollar smoothy." She apologized and said she was sorry for embarrassing me. I paid for the drink (which I had no problem doing). For the manager to make the waitress chase me off the ship through a crowd of people when I was told not to worry about the tab is crazy to me. If they can take an entire smoothy and souvenir cup and throw it in the trash because there was something bad in it, I think it would have been more classy just to write off the cup/ incident rather than having her chase me down. Especially when the manager was right there witnessing when the employee discarded the drink and made me a new one then didn't let me pay for it in the 1st place. In hindsight maybe the employee didnt realize I hadn't paid for any drink yet, but thats not how it came across at the time since when I approached her I literally said, "Hey, I need to pay for my drink but I also need to let you know I found this metal thing in it." Really disappointing since the cruise already makes so much money, and I had "settled" the issue before leaving the ship...just to be embarrassed in front of a bunch of strangers by being chased off this big ship. The nice waitress really should find another job, I don't see the Mangers chasing anyone off the boat over a cup. If you go on this ship maybe just skip the potential drama that comes with buying any special drink, and watch out for hairs in your food. Read more Written April 6, 2024

  • C2535GJangelab 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles UNCLEAN! The boat is filthy! The women’s restroom on the first deck was dirty. The floors on all of the decks were dirty. This riverboat needs to be shutdown for a cleaning and an interior facelift. This is not something that I would have paid for if I had seen the interior of the boat before hand. • Anneliese J 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Boring unless your interested in shipping containers This tour is only interesting if you’re curious about shipping containers and what is in the silos and storage along the river. Savannah is a beautiful city best enjoyed on land. The line for the boat cued up about an hour before departure and took that long to board as they had the compulsory photo taken before boarding. Staff was nice and courteous but there just isn’t anything interesting or scenic along this river. Save your money. Read more Written April 1, 2024
  • dkemp719 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Good Use of Time & Money It was an enjoyable cruise. Well worth the time and money. The commentator knew extensively about Georgia’s history and I walked away gaining knowledge about the area that I didn’t know. They sold drinks and some food. Tip be the first on the ship and go straight to the bar to get water, drinks, food, etc because the line gets very long once everyone boards. Read more Written March 26, 2024

  • 143tonyab 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Just OK It was cold and windy the day we had. It was hard to hear the information over the speakers when they were sharing the history . The lines were very long to get drinks. It was about 2 hours long and we went down to the fort and then came back. I can say I have done it so I would not do it again. I was underwhelmed. • Relax627032 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointing savannah River trip This was definitely not value for money, not as advertised, the staff uniforms looked like they had not seen a washing machine or iron in years, dirty stained and crumpled. The food was very disappointing, cold watery mashed potato’s , cheese hot and sweaty, the crackers soft and stale. The staff were unhelpful, the food manger could not really care they were serving food that was inedible. Definitely would not recommend anyone taking a trip where food was included as all tables around us had food that could not be eaten due to reasons above. Read more Written March 24, 2024

The Georgia Queen and Savannah Riverboat Cruises

Savannah riverboat cruises’: the georgia queen..

It is a 1,000-passenger riverboat that traveled 2,800 miles down the Mississippi River, down and around the shorelines of Florida to call Savannah her home.

The Georgia Queen is a great way to see the city and is one of the most unique social gathering destinations in Savannah, but its impact on local tourism and economic development will be substantial with the added ability to attract large conferences and conventions.”

The Georgia Queen Savannah Riverboat

Built in 1995 as a luxury floating casino for 14 million dollars, the majestic 1800s paddlewheel-style riverboat spent several years traveling the Mississippi River. When gambling legislation changed, allowing land-based casinos to open, the riverboat underwent a four-million-dollar makeover. Today, this spectacular paddlewheel-style riverboat acts as Savannah Riverboat Cruises’ Savannah River Queen’s grand sister ship.

The Georgia Queen measures an impressive 230 feet long, 64 feet wide and towering at 68 feet tall.

She is among the top elite in the country with a capacity of 1,000 passengers, plus a 200-person crew, making her the size of a small cruise ship at 38,000 square feet. The ship’s entertainment spaces include three grand ballrooms with over 15,000 square feet of dining space. It offers more than 5,000 square feet of open-air top deck space with patio seating. This affords more than enough room to accommodate a romantic riverboat wedding on the Savannah River.

The Georgia Queen also boasts a multi-deck, fully equipped gourmet kitchen. It is also equipped with a large service elevator, making traveling between galleys discrete and easy. This onboard kitchen will change the entire dining experience for guests. This will allow for more plated dinner opportunities and flexibility in menu items.

The Georgia Queen

“Experiencing Savannah from our beautiful riverfront is such a unique experience,” Visit Savannah President Joseph Marinelli said.

“Savannah Riverboat’s guests are treated to refreshing breezes, fun entertainment, and some of the best southern cuisine Savannah offers. They can view Georgia’s oldest city as her founders did many years ago when they arrived by river in 1733. Jonathan and his team have been providing unforgettable narrated tours of Savannah’s harbor for 25 years. The Georgia Queen is a game-changer for their business. It will be another valuable asset to the thriving tourism and hospitality offerings of Savannah.”

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Time to dust off the dice, Savannah. There's a new gaming convention in town

Barkus & Meoux founder Dr. Victoria Torres first learned how to play the game Scythe (pictured) at a gaming convention much like Rolling on the River.

Rolling on the River is Game Houndz’s answer to the dearth of large-scale board game-centric gatherings that the Hostess City of the South has experienced since the popular GnomeCon ceased a few years back. For those unfamiliar with the concept, board game conventions primarily consist of a big room filled with tables, where lots and lots of folks who love the genre get together to explore the latest offerings.

As is the case with most of these types of conventions, the organizers will be providing the games, and Game Houndz is bringing more than a hundred different selections, from nostalgic fare such as Monopoly and Clue, to Euro-style strategy games such as the popular Settlers of Catan , to complex (and expensive) “engine-building” epics such as Scythe . Lead organizer and avid gamer, Dr. Victoria Torres has come to love the latter, thanks to her own experience at a convention much like “Rolling on the River” aims to emulate.

“I pull this game out and my wife is instantly like, ‘Oh, god…[groan],’” Torres laughed while describing her first time playing Scythe, a game where players control one of five factions vying for control of ‘The Factory’ in a dystopian alt-history version of the 1920s. “There’s so many parts and pieces, and the rule book is like [an inch] thick.

“As I’m reading and setting things up, this guy walks up and says, ‘Hey, I love this game! Have you played it?’” She continued. “And he helped them set it up and get the game started, before heading off to play other games.”

Torres went on to say. “We want people to discover new games, to have a really fun and positive experience. There [are] just so many more games out there than people can even imagine.”

To foster that experimentation and to welcome those who might be intimidated by the metaphorical wall of games folks will have the opportunity to play, Torres and the Game Houndz crew will be on hand to help people navigate fresh experiences and to advise those who are new to modern gaming to help them find what they might have fun playing.

“The biggest thing I would ask them is, ‘What interests you? What kinds of books do you like to read?” Torres explained, noting that there are modern games exploring everything from murder mysteries to naval warfare to woo-ing royalty, as is the case in Love Letter, one of the games that will be on hand for the convention. “If I know a little bit more about their personal interests, I might be able to help point them towards a particular game that's thematically attractive to them. And then they’re going to be more likely to buy-in and enjoy it.”

These days, many of the more narrative or story games are collaborative, where either everyone wins or everyone loses. Pandemic, a game that became all too real when Covid-19 hit, is an example of such a game, in that each player takes on a different role in the group’s quest to stop the spread of and to eradicate a spreading global pandemic.

But for those who prefer a more competitive atmosphere, Rolling on the River will be offering the opportunity for attendees to win one of 30 such games. All one needs to do to be entered in the raffle is to play one of the games, which have been generously donated by companies such as Queen Games, who’ve sent the hilarious deck building/tower defense Orcs Orcs Orcs, amongst others, and Z-Man Games, which is giving away the aforementioned Love Letter.

While the event centers on gaming, however, it’s not just about the joy of gathering with friends new and old for Torres and her fellow Houndz. She, along with her wife and a team of four other animal-lovers, is also the founder of the local non-profit Barkus & Meoux, which looks to provide support to those who can’t afford necessary veterinary care for their pets, as well as for local rescue organizations. Rolling on the River is a fundraiser for the endeavor, which Torres, who is also a full-time veterinarian, finds near and dear to her heart.

“There are a lot of really good rescue organizations, but a lot of the good organizations that used to be around to help support them…are no longer here in Savannah,” she noted.

Torres came here from Shreveport, Louisiana, in 2022, where she was heavily involved in krewe culture. Having previously lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, when she moved to the south she connected with a group called, not coincidentally, Barkus & Meoux . They did all of the typical events common to Mardi Gras krewes, but also worked to raise money for the care and support of animals.

When the veterinarian moved to Savannah, she hoped to replicate what her Shreveport krewe had accomplished. Almost immediately after coming to town, she began a boardgame night at local shop Morningstar Games. By 2023, she’d ended up attracting a bunch of animal-loving gamers who gladly joined her in forming the non-profit. It wasn’t long before they started thinking of ways that they could raise money to help local animal lovers in need, and their mutual love of gaming made an event like Rolling on the River a no brainer for Torres and the rest of the board.

“That’s been my goal and mission, to bring that whole fun Mardi Gras party aspect to Savannah, while being able to support the local rescues, support and educate the public, and build an emergency assistance fund to be able to step in to help people when they don’t have the finances to meet what their heart wants to do for their animal,” Torres explained.

Rolling on the River won’t exactly be Mardi Gras, but for boardgamers, it’ll have everything you could hope for: In-addition to its massive game library, the convention will also include vendors like Morningstar Games, and Bow Tie Barbecue will be on site to serve up food when hunger strikes in the middle of a “5-Minute Dungeon” marathon. And for those planning on going all night, they’re offering a VIP package that not only includes tickets to both days, a bag, and a convention shirt (the only way attendees can get one), but also “breath mints, water, pens… some snackies, just to get you through hours of gaming,” Torres chuckled.

For a city that hasn’t had a board game convention in several years, Rolling on the River offers hope that there will once again be a yearly place for gamers of all types to get together and celebrate their shared love for the hobby.

“Attending a board game convention is a great way to test out a bunch of different games without having to buy them,” Torres related. “And a nice way to meet people with similar interests.”
