Outboard and Cockpit Controls

I know this has probably been debated a lot but my question is simple, would you purchase a boat with cockpit controls or would you pass because of it? Here's my situation... I like my Catalina 25 and I don't really want to sell. Well, at least until I retire and move up. My wife, on the other hand, has trouble manning the tiller and operating the outboard controls. For me it's somewhat of a challenge but for here it's all but impossible. I think she would be way more comfortable being able to control throttle and fore/aft thrust with remote controls. I like being able to change direction of the outboard in tight spots but in all actuality we wouldn't need that in all but the most extreme cases. Better yet, I'd love to figure out a way I could sync my outboard direction to my tiller position and put controls on the tiller. Is that crazy thinking?
I have seen links- like a drag link on a car- to connect the OB to an external rudder and move the OB along with the tiller. You can turn on a dime that way.

Depending on your outboard, there are remotes. Yamaha for one has cable driven controls for shift and throttle, and you can buy longer sets. I've seen outboard controls mounted on the tiller on a trimaran. And it's not a bad idea, if it makes her more comfortable handling the boat.
I didn't get the impression that steering or turning the engine was the problem. Indication was shift and throttle handling. And if the engine is on a mount on the stern. and most of the Catalina 25 pictures show that, I can see her problem.
I like Sumner's setup but I don't think that would work in my situation. I haven't given up on that just yet, though. Initially I was imagining some kind of cable set up attaching the tiller and motor handle. Of course I'd have to mount the cable in such a way that both turned in unison and was easily removable. What I wouldn't give for heated winter storage in my back yard. I suppose I should be happy with at least having it indoors, eh?

LOL- There ARE advantages to outboard wells. Of course the disadvantage is the lower unit has to be antifouled, since it's always in the water

If you are asking us if a remote controlled outboard is more convenient than a tiller? ABSOLUTELY. I your outboard manufacturer doesn't make a remote kit for your motor, you might consider this product: http://powertiller.com/Demonstration.htm

Kper; What year and hp is your motor. also take a few photos of the engine, back of transom and the rear cockpit. I will need to know your model and serial number of the engine. Send it to [email protected] and I will assist. Use to put them on when I was also a Catalina dealer as well on my Hunters. Dave condon
I've done both mods that you're asking about on two different boats. On the first boat the outboard was almost out of reach. For motoring long distances it wasn't a problem but maneuvering in tight spaces was a real pain. I love having both a remote control for the motor and having tiller to outboard steering. I wouldn't want to be without either of them again. I used this guy's ideas for the steering. http://cpyoa.geekworkshosting.com/forum/index.php?topic=2808.0
Just a quick tip for hand cranking an outboard engine. Make a bight in a suitable length of 3/8" line and slip it over the handle of the start cord. This allows you to stand, brace yourself, and pull with both hands from a comfortable position. George

Boat Throttle Controls
A boat’s mechanical controls’ smoothness and ease of use lessens fatigue and increases pilot enjoyment in driving the craft. There are several kinds of boat throttle controls, and Wholesale Marine carries them: single- and dual-function controls, throttle controls for boats that require multiple installations. Remember, the right boat throttle control will deliver maximum performance. We feature console, flush-mount, panel, binnacle, and top-mount installations. Below we’ll explain each option.
Dual-Function Boat Throttle Controls
The most popular controls used today are dual-function controls. This is due to their ease of use -they make boat handling easier. The shift and throttle controls are operated by a single lever. This facilitates shifting at a low RPM, to protect the engine’s shift mechanism. Two cables are used, one for the shift, and one for the throttle. Try Teleflex Marine’s CH7800 Series Dual Top Mount Control for maximum pilot control.
Single-Function Boat Throttle Controls
As the name suggests, a single lever performs its function one at a time. This way, boaters can either shift or throttle, but not perform both functions simultaneously. This two-lever single function model is generally used with boats with twin engines. However, both levers of one control are for the throttle while the other control levers operate the shift mechanism. A popular choice is Teleflex Marine’s CH7500 Series Top Mount Control with Lever on Right . It offers smooth handling and additional safety features.
Multiple-Station Boat Throttle Controls
Wholesale Marine recommends that for this installation, to use the control system that provides the fewest degrees of bend, as this will also provide the more efficient cable action and smooth handling.

Choosing the Right Throttle and Shift Cables for Your Boat
- By Jim Hendricks
- September 6, 2022
Cable throttle and shift controls still dominate the boating market for outboard, inboard and sterndrive engines. Cables from brands such as Dometic Marine (previously SeaStar) and Uflex provide smooth, reliable service for years, even decades, but they might eventually wear out, corrode or otherwise lose optimal functionality. Here’s what to look for when deciding on replacement throttle and shift cables for your boat.
When to Replace
“The control lever should move smoothly and freely,” says David Wolfe, product and support manager for Dometic Marine, whose cables dominate the US boating market. “Typically, if the movement is stiff, sticky or causes clunking when shifting, it’s time to replace the cable.”
Also, if the lever does not repeat a shift command (such as forward, neutral or reverse) at the same position or angle every time, it often means the cable is wearing out and requires replacement, Wolfe advises.
Rather than replace just the one suspect cable, boaters are advised to replace both the throttle and shift cables at the same time. One faltering cable serves as a signal that the other might not be too far behind.
Regular or Premium
There are two grades of engine control cables: standard and premium versions. Dometic calls its premium series Xtreme, while Uflex calls its the Mach series. Uflex also offers standard cables, but Dometic is gradually phasing out its standard version, which uses a solid metal core. However, you will still find some under the SeaStar brand in retail distribution.
The premium versions are more expensive. In Dometic’s case, the Xtreme cables cost about 15 to 20 percent more than its standard cables, but they feature splined cores. The ridges of the splined core glide back and forth in a lubricated HDPE liner that allows for smoother control than standard cables and without sacrificing precision in shifting and throttle control, Wolfe says.
Performance Bend
Premium cables offer another advantage: the ability to bend more tightly than standard cables. The Xtreme cables, for instance, offer a 4-inch bend radius, while the tightest turn a standard cable can tolerate is 8 inches.
Here’s the upshot: While a premium cable costs more, it will turn tighter corners in the rigging tube, transom and elsewhere than a standard cable can accommodate and still provide optimal throttle and shift performance.
Original vs. Aftermarket
Major marine engine brands such as Honda, Mercury, Suzuki, Volvo Penta and Yamaha offer control cables as original equipment. With this in mind, is it smarter to source cables from the engine brand?
“Almost all marine engine manufacturers use Dometic’s Xtreme series cables,” Wolfe says. So, whether you buy OEM or Xtreme cables, you are getting the same thing.
“Honda, Suzuki, Tohatsu, Volvo and Yamaha use the Xtreme CCX633 style,” he points out. “Mercury and MerCruiser use the CCX179 (Gen1) and CCX189 (Gen II) series. Evinrude and Johnson outboards match up with the CCX205 series.”
Determining Lengths
Cables must be the proper length—long enough to reach from the throttle and shift controls to the engine, but not excessively long. In retrofits, use the same length as the cable you are replacing. The length is normally stamped on the jacket of the cable, usually (but not always) on the helm end. “You can also find the style of the cable stamped in white here,” Wolfe says. If you can’t find the size on the old cable (sometimes these wear off), measure it from tip to tip.
In situations where there are no existing cables, measure from the helm control along an unobstructed path to the connection points at the engine or shift point. Then round up to the nearest foot for ordering the new cable. Aftermarket cables are sold in foot increments up to 30 feet, with longer cables sold in only even-foot increments.
For outboards, throttle and shift cables are the same length, while the throttle and shift cables for inboard and sterndrive system differ in length because one goes to the engine and the other to the transmission or drive.
Route it Right
Routing the cables from the helm control to the motor—or vice versa—might be as simple as taping the ends of the old cables to the new ones and pulling them from one end to the other. If you can’t use the old cables, use a pull cord or an electrician’s fish tape.
Typically, control cables run through a rigging tube belowdecks or along the starboard side of the boat. Once the cables are installed, it’s important to avoid binding them too tightly with zip ties, Wolfe advises. “Keep them loose and avoid binding them together with onboard wires or other cables,” he says. “This will help ensure the smoothest possible shifting and throttle action.”
Outboard Loop
For outboards, Wolfe recommends creating a 4-foot loop in the cables before they connect to the motor. This prevents binding when the outboard turns from side to side and trims up and down. Take this into account when measuring for new cables.
Many of today’s outboards, however, use transom rigging tubes that do not readily allow for a big loop in the cables. In these cases, make sure the rigging tube is long enough to leave a fair amount of slack to accommodate the control cables as the outboard rotates, trims and tilts, Wolfe says.
Correct Connectors
To ensure you have the proper cable connectors for your propulsion system, you can reuse the old connectors for the helm control, engine and transmission, assuming they are in good working condition, Wolfe says. Companies such as Dometic and Uflex—as well as the engine brands—offer the proper connectors if you choose to replace them.
In either case, wait until after the cables are routed before installing any connectors. This streamlines the cables and makes it easier to pull them through crowded rigging tubes and access ports.

Electronic Throttle Versus Cable Throttle: Making the Switch
- By Jim Hendricks
- Updated: December 1, 2018
I have electronic throttle and shift controls on my boat, and I never wish to return to the good ol’ days of cable controls for my single outboard. That said, the previous system served me well for three decades. Given that cable systems still offer more-than-satisfactory performance, is an upgrade to electronic — or drive-by-wire — controls really worth it? Here are factors to help you decide.
Switching Controls
Making the switch from cable to electronic controls usually coincides with the purchase of a new boat or outboard. That’s because you can’t just add electronic controls to an older outboard. The engine must be designed and built with drive-by-wire capabilities. While nearly all new multi-outboard boats now come equipped with drive-by-wire controls, a fair number of new single outboard boats feature cables.
If you’re ordering a new boat — either through a dealer or factory direct — you will likely have the opportunity to specify the type of controls.
When re-powering an older boat, you can choose to stay with cables or upgrade to drive-by-wire, which will dictate what type of engine you buy. Outboard brands such as Yamaha offer a choice between mechanical and electronic engine controls on a number of models.
Cost Factors
A new engine with drive-by-wire controls costs more than one with conventional throttle and shift. Yamaha’s F200 with electronic controls, for example, costs around 6 percent more than the mechanical version. What’s more, the drive-by-wire price does not include some rigging elements needed for electronic controls, including a binnacle and instrumentation. Unless you perform the rigging work yourself, labor costs for upgrading to a drive-by-wire motor will also increase versus retrofitting with a mechanical engine. That’s because the installing dealer needs to remove the old rigging and add new elements, such as a new control harness and sub-assembly cables, engine-control module, binnacle, ignition key and start/stop switch, and engine instrumentation.
Helm Changes
A re-power can grow into a larger project than you might have originally budgeted when switching to a drive-by-wire engine due to unanticipated complications. For example, there’s no guarantee that the footprint for the new binnacle will match the old one.
When the footprints do not match, it leads to fiberglass and gelcoat repair work to patch the old mounting holes. Also, newer all-in-one multifunction engine displays occupy a fraction of the space that old-school individual gauges required, often leaving a bunch of empty holes to fill in the dash.
Based on these possible complications, some boaters opt to stay with mechanical models when replacing aging outboards, thus eliminating much of the extra rigging costs. Usually, the new mechanical outboard will work with the existing harnesses, controls and instruments, provided you stay with the same brand of outboard.
Easier Operation
Shifting and throttle adjustments become silky smooth with electronic controls. That’s because there are no cables or complex mechanisms in the binnacle to bind up. Instead, electrical servos under the outboard hood respond to shift and throttle inputs.
At the press of a mere fingertip, you can advance the throttle from neutral to full throttle. It’s that sensitive; a marvelous tool in the hands of an experienced and attentive skipper.
For those who are uninitiated or more accustomed to mechanical controls with more stiffness in the levers, such responsiveness can result in abrupt acceleration and lurching, which becomes particularly hazardous in tight quarters, such as a crowded marina. It can also put unprepared crew members at risk. They can fall to the deck or, even worse, go overboard.
The smoothness also leads to a tendency to shift completely through the neutral position and into reverse when decelerating. That’s rough on the gears and propeller hub.
To mitigate these issues, manufacturers have incorporated tension adjustments into electronic binnacles. This lets you add friction to the control lever to help eliminate inadvertent and abrupt acceleration.
Multi-Outboard Features
Electronic controls ease the task of running multiple outboards. With Mercury Marine’s Digital Throttle and Shift (DTS), for example, a press of a button on the control box lets you use a single lever for shift and throttle of up to four outboards. Another button on the DTS binnacle synchronizes the revolutions per minute for up to four motors.
Drive-by-wire systems also facilitate the addition of second helm stations in a tower. A second binnacle integrates with the electronic controls. A press of a button transfers control.
The advent of electronic controls has also led to new features, such as Suzuki Marine’s troll mode for fine adjustments in the lower-rpm range, using a rocker switch when slow-trolling.
The Evinrude Icon II and Yamaha Helm Master binnacles feature engine-speed controls that work like cruise control in an automobile. With the Yamaha system, once you reach your desired revolutions per minute, press the speed-control button to hold that velocity. Both systems let you throttle up or down in minute increments to fine-tune your speed for maximum fuel efficiency or achieve just the right -trolling speed.
Someday soon, the outboards -powering the vast majority of salt-water fishing boats will feature electronic throttle and shift. And ultimately, that’s a good thing. As I intimated at the beginning, once you experience this technology, you’ll never want to go back to the old cable controls again.
Joystick Capability
Electronic throttle and shift controls also make possible integrated joystick steering systems, some of which incorporate station-keeping features. The computer brains of systems such as Evinrude iDock, Mercury Joystick Piloting for Outboards, SeaStar Solutions Optimus 360 and Yamaha Helm Master appropriate the electronic throttle and shift, and combine it with independent outboard steering to point, pivot and move the boat in joystick mode.

Amadeus Description
Built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard, and having undergone a total refit in 2018, S/Y Amadeus was designed to please the most demanding of yachtsmen. Built for smooth sailing, this elegant cutter rigged sloop has a sleek hull design, comfortably reaching top speeds of 12 knots and ensuring excellent sailing performance. S/Y Amadeus has just undergone this past winter (2018) a major refit such as total repaint top to bottom, new rigging (BSI Denmark), Novourania with new Evinrude 75hp outboard, Splash pool, new Bimini/Sprayhood/Awnings, new exterior fabrics and many other enhancements. In 2016 new “North Sails” were placed onboard. The yacht is maintained in excellent condition with a five-star crew year round. Her generous uncluttered teak deck offers plenty of space for sunbathing. The spacious and unique outdoor saloon has two tables seating upto 12 guests and is a perfect setting for outdoor dining and entertainment. Thanks to a special canopy and roll-up windows, the deck saloon has the added attraction that it can be fully enclosed, making it ideal for all weather conditions. Her forward area includes a splash pool and sun bathing area which can also be shaded with a removable awning. From the cockpit, a stairway leads to the light-filled spacious saloon offering ample seating, ideal for relaxing or enjoying a drink from the bar, and offers a formal dining area. This area also includes a LCD TV, entertainment center, ipod dock station, playstation, and is ideal for indoor activities. She can accommodate 10-12 guests in one full width master stateroom, two double bedded cabins each having one extra single bed and two twin bedded cabins which can be easily converted to double beds (upon request), thus, making her the only 5 double bedded sailboat in the Greek market. She also has a nice selection of toys which include water ski (adult and children), tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod and snorkeling gear.

Loss of control, B735 on approach to Moscow-Vnukovo
Loss of control, B735 on approach to Moscow-Vnukovo. UTair flight UT588 from Krasnodar to Moscow, Russia, reportedly suffered a loss of control incident while on approach to Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport. Unconfirmed reports from Russian aviation sources suggest that the aircraft was on approach to runway 06 when a situation developed where the aircraft attained a pitch attitude of +45 degrees.
The aircraft rolled 33 degrees to the right, then -34.8 to the left. The pitch supposedly decreased to 30 with the speed dropping to 60 KIAS.
The aircraft is then thought to have rolled 96 degrees to the right, pitching -14 degrees (nose down).
It then banked 45 degrees to the left with speed increasing to 150 KIAS. The flight crew then regained control and reported to ATC that they were going around because the approach was unstabilised.
The crew positioned the aircraft for another approach and proceeded for a landing at 06:35 UTC, about 18 minutes after the event.
The aircraft was still on the ground at Vnukovo, eleven days after the event.
