Great Britain’s impressive superyacht capability is advocated by Superyacht UK, which additionally draws on the resources of the 1500 member British Marine trade organisation, founded in 1913, of which we are a part. Founded on decades of craftsmanship and innovation, our members are at the forefront of superyacht development, from naval architecture, design and engineering, through all the many skills necessary to see a superyacht into service and and effectively managed and supported throughout its service life.

MCA Internationally recognised training to become a superyacht deckhand. This IYT Deckhand Training Course is a qualification, unlike the recreational sailing “Competent Crew” course which is being offered through other superyacht training providers.

The IYT Deckhand Training Course certification is the only internationally recognised qualification for deckhands. Your graduation certificate will be accredited by International Yacht Training (IYT) Worldwide, who has recognition with 25 governments across the globe.

The  Superyacht Deckhand course will ensure students become job ready, receive resume and career advice, participate in interview role plays and undertake further crew management training. A deckhand carries out his or her duties under the direction and authority of the captain via the first officer and/or bosun. A deckhand’s duties include keeping the yacht’s exterior and deck equipment clean and exquisitely maintained, assisting in watch keeping and navigational support, guest services and docking procedures. Students will receive extensive training in these areas and the course provides the theoretical and practical skills required to be a successful crew member onboard a superyacht. Both power and sail superyacht skills are covered in the course, which will increase your opportunities for placement once you graduate.

Certification You Will Achieve

All successful graduates receive the following certification:

IYT – International

Are you wanting to maximise your job potential in the Super-Yacht industry?

STCW Training UK can help you with a dedicated programme tailored to most yachts' requirements. We spend a lot of time visiting various yachts throughout the world and have extensive experience in the industry. We have put together a 'bucket list' of qualifications we can provide directly, or through our chosen partners, to enhance your ability to get that dream job.

We can help you grow within your career with higher level qualifications such as Efficient Deckhand, Officer of the Watch training etc. through our sister companies, but let's get your feet on the ladder first:

The Bare Minimum - STCW Basic Safety Courses: Basic Fire-fighting, Elementary First Aid, Personal Survival Techniques, Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities, Security Awareness - All these for £765 inc. VAT

Better - All the above but also Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (online) - approx £945 inc. VAT (dependent on current $ exchange rate)

And in conjunction with our RYA training partners:

Better Still - All the above plus RYA PWC (Jet Ski) Competence Certificate inc. use of ski £280 (or £175 using own Jetski), Powerboat Level 2 (£330) & VHF/SRC Operator's Licence - (£175 - inc licence/exam) - for an extra £785 inc. VAT

The Best - All the above plus RYA PWC Instructor - for an extra £425 inc. VAT

Living and Working on a Super-Yacht:

Below you can read more about the general work you will be required to do along with the living conditions, average salaries and working hours. We know what Captains, First Officers and Bosuns are looking for in a new starter and the programmes above will enhance your ability to find a job amongst the hundreds of hopefuls who apply every year.

Deckhand is the entry level for crew jobs on superyachts. Your job will include many diverse activities but the main aim will be to maintain the exterior of the yacht and keep it in top condition. You will normally be part of a team of between 2 and 6, your line manager will normally be the Lead Deckhand, Bosun and then the First (or Chief) Officer. Your duties will include:

Cleaning Varnishing Polishing Line handling General exterior maintenance Driving tenders and Jet Skis

It can take several weeks of hard effort to secure a job and if you have the edge over other candidates with the extras above you will be short-listed and possibly reduce this to days. Other qualities required will include things we can't help you with such as: politeness, willingness to learn, willingless to help out with a task, willingness to go that extra mile, confidentiallity and a smart appearance

An entry level deckhand could expect to earn between £1,200 and £1,800 per month. An experienced deckhand could expect up to around £1,800 to £2,200 or more per month. Charter yachts are normally very busy and you will work hard, however there are perks if the guests have had an excellent experience when they will show their appreciation with sometimes eye boggling tips to the crew as a whole. Private yachts are the less busy and tend to carry out trips with their owners (the Boss) a few times per year. You will not work as hard as on a charter yacht but there will be less tips.

Living Conditions:

On most yachts you will share a cabin with two bunk-beds with another crewmate, you will have your own locker and/or wardrobe.. There will be a shared private bathroom with a washbasin and shower. You can expect your cabin to be no more than about 2m x 3m square. The cabins will normally be situated in a corridor next to the crew mess separate from the guest area where the whole crew will eat and socialise. Working hours will normally be 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. with most weekends off when there are no guests onboard but much longer hours when they are onboard. (You will come under the rules of the Maritime Labour Convention however which means you may work long hours but then get time off to compensate.)

Normally laundry will be done for you by the interior crew (Stewardesses and Stewards). Everybody works together and so you should keep your cabin clean and tidy and help the interior crew to carry out their duties by respecting their workload and attention to detail - they are primarily there for the Boss or guests.

There will be at least one chef onboard who will prepare meals for guests and the crew. Sometimes there will be a dedicated crew and separate "front of house" chef if the yacht is a large one. Meals are normally very nutritious and of a high standard and mostly the Chief 'Stew' will make sure there are home comforts to cater for personal choices when purchasing supplies if possible (if you prefer to drink a certain soft drink, nutrition bar etc.)

Please get in touch if we can help you with your career transition.

Deckhand Training Courses

Entry-level deckhand courses and qualifications to help land your first job on a superyacht.

Essential Deckhand Training:

Entry-level deckhand courses and qualifications are essential to your success in the superyacht industry. Obtaining your first job as a deckhand is difficult as it is a fiercely competitive position. With a great deal of training available, it may be difficult to understand which deckhand courses are right for you and your budget. Before deciding on which courses to enrol in, we encourage you to understand the role of these courses and certifications so that you are able to make informed decisions.

Below is a list of essential courses you should take as an aspiring deckhand with little or no experience :

  • STCW Basic Training
  • RYA Power Boat Level 2 or IYT Rib Master
  • Proficiency in Security Awareness PSA or Designated Security Duties (PDSD)

You are able to connect with our global network of deckhand training providers for each course, either by selecting a specific course, or by selecting a region in the deckhand course finder section, found below the course content.

STCW Basic Safety Training

In order for you to legally obtain a job on a commercial superyacht (over 24m) you have to be certified with all four basic safety training modules, which are as follows:

  • Personal Survival Techniques | PST (A-VI/1-1)
  • Fire Fighting Fire Prevention | FFP (A-VI/1-2)
  • Elementary First Aid | EFA (A-VI/1-3)
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities | PSSR (A-VI/1-4)

STCW Basic Training courses can be booked on an individual bases or booked in combination with other essential deckhand courses. You can find out more about STCW Basic Training , connect with an STCW Basic Training Centre near you , or continue to other deckhand safety training courses below.

*Although this is a commercial requirement, it is generally seen as a requirement for employment onboard private vessels by yacht owners, captains, management companies or flag states. Failure to obtain STCW Basic training severely limits employment opportunities.

Powerboat / Rib Training:

As an aspiring deckhand, this course is a necessity, providing you with an essential license to drive superyacht tenders around the world. Unless you have a role that excludes you from such deckhand activities, this is a crucial course that forms the basis upon which you can develop your vessel handling skills. These skills are not only required to drive guests, but also to pass practical examinations required for licenses required to drive larger vessels.

The two most popular courses that do not require any prior experience, are the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course or the IYT Small Powerboat & Rib Master . Although the majority of deckhand job posts request a Powerboat Level II, an IYT Small Powerboat & Rib Master is seen as an equivalent and serves the same purpose. Both are recognised by the MCA.

Proficiency in Security Certificate

(STCW A-VI/6-1) & (STCW A-VI/6-1)

In order to work on an ISPS-compliant vessel, an STCW proficiency in security certificate is required. Proficiency in Designated Security Awareness (PSA)  is the minimum requirement, whereas  Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD)  is required for crew who are designated security duties on such vessels.

Both courses can be done in class or online. *ISPS complaint yachts are commercial yachts larger than 500GT (Usually commercial yachts +50m in length)*

Find out more about the PSA & PDSD Certification and connect with a training provider, or continue reading about further deckhand training below.

Deckhand Tender

Superyacht Deckhand Course:

Most "Superyacht Deckhand Courses" are non-accredited and do not form part of a requirement for legal employment but are generally sold in conjunction with essential courses (some of which may be mandatory or deemed as appropriate by the training provider in question) and advertised as a "superyacht deckhand course" package or similar.

The purpose of a superyacht deckhand course to introduce candidates to the duties and skills associated with the role of a deckhand. This course is tailored towards candidates with little to no exposure to the superyacht industry.

Course content is dependant on the training provider but generally includes industry information, general deck procedures, wash-downs, maintenance, cleaning procedures, line handling, knots and bends, as well other topics to help familiarize you with the deck department career path the lies ahead.

Superyacht deckhand courses give potential employers an indication that yous have a basic skill set and understanding of the deckhand duties that lie ahead.  This forms a foundation upon which to build skills and knowledge through onboard training and experience. Depending on the location and school in question, a small amount of onboard training/experience on a yacht nearby may be included.

VHF Short Range Certificate (SRC):

As a deckhand seeking your first job in the yachting industry, it is advisable to obtain a VHF Short Range Certificate, preferably one recognised by the MCA. VHF is a common form of communication not only from the bridge of the superyacht but also from tenders to the main vessel (or other vessels) when out of UHF Radio range (your personal hand held for internal crew communication), or to land based authorities.

This 1-day course is an essential qualification required for further deck qualifications (Such as a Yachtmaster/ Master of Yachts), and is also required for commercial endorsement of a small powerboat license. The sooner you as a deckhand becomes familiar with this equipment the better. It is, therefore, a recommended course for green deckhands to complete.

Personal Watercraft (PWC) License

PWC's often referred to as Jet Ski's or Wave Runners, are common watercraft found on board superyachts. Operation of PWC's is a common duty of a deckhands during guest trips. Certain countries require PWC operators to hold a license, most commonly countries in Europe/ The Mediterranean, making it mandatory for crew to hold a license should they wish to operate one.

This one-day theory and practical course will teach you how to operate and navigate a personal watercraft in a safe manner. No previous experience or qualifications are required. A certificate is provided upon successful completion of the course (to the required standard). The IYT PWC and RYA PWC are recommended, accredited versions of this course.

In areas where jet ski licenses are not required, it is a commonly requested by captains, management companies and owners for insurance purposes. It is very beneficial to hold such a license.

Complementary Deckhand Training

Additional courses to give you an edge (that do not require previous deckhand experience)

  • RYA Personal Watercraft (PWC) Instructor
  • SCUBA Diving Qualifications

Jet ski instructor riding a personal water craft

RYA Personal Watercraft (Jet Ski) Instructor Course

Due to the fact that charter guests and yacht crew require a PWC license in order to operate a Jet Ski in the Med, the demand for crew with the PWC instructor certification is high. Crew with the instructor license (working on a correctly registered vessel) are able to certify guests with an RYA Introduction to PWC Safety Course, allowing them to use the watercraft during their time on board.

Scuba Diving:

Scuba diving experience and qualifications are beneficial in helping land a job as a deckhand. While Dive Instructor and Dive Master courses considerably improve the chances of getting a job on vessels that support guest diving experiences, basic Open Water and Advanced diving qualifications are also beneficial and will improve your CV.

Whether it is accompanying guests on a dive in the Bahamas or inspecting something under the hull of the yacht, scuba diving experience can be a great addition to your skill set as a deckhand.

Deckhand Training & Certificates For Deckhands With Sea Time & Experience

Courses & certification for deckhands that have evidence of sea service and real tender handling experience after 1 to a few busy seasons of employment

  • MCA Yacht Rating Certificate
  • Yacht-Master / Master of Yachts
  • Advanced Powerboat
  • MCA Efficient Deckhand (EDH)

MCA Yacht Rating Certificate

Certain commercial superyachts require a number of crew to hold a Yacht Rating certificate as per the safe manning procedures of the vessel in question. An individual can apply for an MCA Yacht Rating certificate once the required sea time is acquired and by completing specific tasks in the Training Record Book (TRB), signed off by a qualified officer or captain.

For Crew without experience, the yacht service requirement can be reduced if aYacht Rating Course Completion Certificate  or - IYT Superyacht Deck Crew Course is attained but the MCA Yacht Rating Certificate can only be applied for once 2 months of sea service is acquired.

Therefore, although a "Yacht Rating Course" covers some important aspects, usually taught onboard, completion of this course does not qualify a candidate to apply for a job that requires an MCA Yacht Rating Certificate , unless the applicant has sufficient sea service and meets the medical and STCW requirement.

RYA Advanced Powerboat

If you are required to be licensed to drive larger powerboats (10m - 24m) during the day and night and have insufficient sea time and experience for your Master of Yachts 200, then the Advanced Power boat course is an option to consider. With an RYA/MCA Advanced Powerboat Commercial Endorsement, license holders are able to drive an MCA coded boat up to 24m in length or 80 gross tons up to 20 miles away from the shore or safe haven. The responsibility of large tender handling is usually only given to crew have built up significant time behind the helm of tenders, under supervision of more experienced crew. If you are new to the industry (unless you have real large power boating experience) you are likely to be accompanied and supervised by a more experienced, licensed crew member during large tender handling duties. It should therefore not be assumed that this course will allow you to take on such duties without time, experience  and training with a more experienced crew member present.

Deckhand Next to Yacht Tender

Yachtmaster / Master of Yachts 200:

Gaining a Master of Yachts Certification is an important step for those who would like to progress their career as a deckhand and start taking on additional responsibilities. A Commercially Endorsed Master of Yachts 200GT opens up more employment opportunities (fulfils certain manning requirements for commercial vessels), allows candidates to work as an Officer on yachts <500GT and allows candidates to begin training modules that form part of the requirement for an MCA Officer of The Watch (OOW) 3000  and is a common requirement for the primary drivers of guests in large superyacht tenders. Find out more about the RYA and IYT Yachtmaster / Master of Yachts.

Efficient Deckhand (EDH) Course

Once you have your Yachtmaster / Master of Yachts under your belt and you are ready to start chipping away at your OOW (MCA Officer of the Watch 3000 Limited), it is advised to begin with the Efficient Deckhand Course. An EDH will ensure that you operate in a safe and professional manner when moving to a more senior role where leadership and instruction is required. The framework for further training can be found on our Deckhand to OOW course page .

Illustration depicting young people affected by lack of skills training, affordable housing and social media

World Happiness Report sounds alarm about the welfare of young people

Lack of education, training and housing is behind loss of gen Z’s traditionally positive outlook

  • Younger people becoming more unhappy than older generations
  • Vivek Murthy: the US surgeon general fighting for youngsters’ happiness

Something is going wrong for young people between the ages of 15 and 24 in the UK, across Europe, the US and Australia.

The latest World Happiness Report shows that while not all teenagers and young adults are suffering, a large and growing number cannot cope with being left adrift with few qualifications on an economic sea that is more testing with each passing year.

Social media is believed to play a part in driving down self-esteem and robbing young people of their wellbeing. But it is the lack of education, skills training and affordable housing that underpins the decline in the positive outlook traditionally displayed in surveys by those broadly fitting the gen Z age group.

The report found that young people are becoming more like their beleaguered parents, who have always reported themselves to be exhausted and weighed down by life’s cares, and not like older people, who still score highly on the happiness index.

University is less of a guarantee of financial and psychological wellbeing, and those that do not go into higher education are left to fend for themselves with only limited access to apprenticeships and further education courses that might lift their social standing, income and self-respect.

As the Intergenerational Foundation charity said in response to the report: “Young adults are being hit from all sides by a toxic combination of government policy, a housing affordability crisis, stagnating wages, and a high cost of living.

“No wonder their generation is experiencing unprecedented levels of mental ill-health as their futures look so bleak.”

If young people are increasingly reporting themselves to be unhappy , closing the gap between the young and the middle-aged, it leaves only the older generations to report the highest levels of life satisfaction. And no wonder when spiralling stock markets and a global property boom have given the over-55s a level of wealth unknown in human history.

Wealth brings with it a sense of wellbeing, and so do higher incomes, which have also improved for most people nearing retirement or already collecting their pension. State-sponsored retirement schemes have been largely protected from the ravages of inflation, meaning that average poverty levels have declined among the over-65s.

In the UK it is noticeable that the state pension has escaped means-testing, which has become a fixture for in-work benefits, denying many young people with incomes just above the poverty line a lifeline of state support.

Where the young and old previously had a positive outlook and those middle-aged less so, this has been flattening out with time. The situation was more exaggerated in Britain, which dropped from 19th to the 20th happiest country overall, but was ranked 32nd when only the views of people under 30 were taken into account.

Richard Layard, a professor at the London School of Economics and one of the report’s authors, is clear that the findings show more effort is needed to support the education, training and mental health of younger people. Even if young people are only considered to be economic units of production, the evidence shows the whole economy benefits from them have a better sense of wellbeing.

Another study by Layard for the LSE and the Resolution Foundation 2030 Inquiry found that the UK was the only country among the 38 members of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development where the literacy and numeracy of 16- to 24-year-olds is no higher that that of 55- to 65-year-olds. And almost a third of people aged 18 in the UK are not in education or training, about double the average in France and Germany.

It showed that not much had changed since 2007 when Unicef published a table of 21 economically advanced countries, comparing 40 indicators – including poverty, family relationships, health and safety, education and children’s own sense of happiness – that might affect the wellbeing of children.

At the bottom of the Unicef study, in 21st place, was the UK, just below the US. As with the World Happiness Report, the Nordic countries filled the top places.

Unicef concluded that children growing up in the UK were the unhappiest in the industrialised world, and blamed the lack of collaboration and cooperation with other children at school and parents who spent little time “just talking” to them. That was 17 years ago.

The latest World Happiness Report is a warning sign to governments that have put the welfare of older people above that of younger generations. If young people cannot establish themselves in the workplace with a decent home and time and money to visit friends and family, the ramifications will boomerang on the old. There will be slower economic growth and fewer funds to support the retired.

Russia has likely 'resorted to limiting' its Black Sea operations as its damaged navy goes on the defense against Ukraine: UK intelligence

  • New orders from Sergei Shoigu indicate Russia is scaling down its ambitions in the Black Sea, per the UK MOD.
  • Ukrainian attacks have forced the Black Sea Fleet to focus on preserving its assets, the UK MOD said.
  • Ukraine has repeatedly been terrorizing the Black Sea Fleet with exploding unmanned boats.

Insider Today

Russia is indicating that it's reducing the scope of its naval operations in the Black Sea amid Ukrainian strikes on Moscow's fleet there, the UK's Ministry of Defense said.

In an intelligence update on Tuesday, the ministry noted a visit by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu to the fleet's command post in Crimea, during which the Kremlin emphasized new measures to defend its naval assets against Ukrainian attacks.

The new focus indicates that Ukraine's attacks have prompted Russia "to increase its efforts to preserve its fleet in the Black Sea," the UK update said.

"The Russian Navy has highly likely resorted to limiting its operations to the eastern Black Sea as its losses mount and its threat perceptions increase," the update added.

During his visit, Shoigu singled out the fleet's need for defense drills against air and drone attacks, which he told troops to train for "day and night," per the Russian defense ministry.

The Kremlin also seeks to deploy large-caliber systems and machine guns specifically to strengthen the Black Sea Fleet's defenses, the Russian ministry said.

Ukraine claims to have sunk about a third of Russia's naval assets in the Black Sea, with its forces leaning heavily on strikes and exploding uncrewed boats instead of an official navy.

One of its latest declared victories over the Black Sea Fleet — considered the most formidable naval force in the region — involved an exploding drone attack on the Russian warship Caesar Kunikov.

A video of the February 14 attack surfaced earlier this month on Russian mil blogger channels, showing the crew of the Caesar Kunikov trying to shoot incoming drones with machine guns. Another video, released by Ukraine, showed the ship sinking.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's repeated strikes on the Black Sea Fleet have forced the Russian navy to disperse its assets from its main base in Sevastopol to smaller facilities.

The Institute for the Study of War, a US think tank, said Shoigu's orders to shore up the Black Sea Fleet's defenses allow him to either gain political influence or shield himself from potential fallout — depending on how the defense effort goes.

"Shoigu's posturing to protect the BSF sets conditions for Shoigu to either take credit should the BSF become more effective at protecting itself against Ukrainian strikes or blame other commanders should the BSF fail in this effort," the think tank said in a Sunday update.

Russia's losses among the Black Sea Fleet, including the flagship Moskva , marks a positive sign for Ukraine's war effort as it struggles this year to curb Moscow's advances on land, largely due to a dwindling flow of international aid.

Russia's defense ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours.

UK council won't say whether two-week 'cyber incident' impacted resident data

Security experts insist ransomware is involved but leicester zips its lips.

Leicester City Council continues to battle a suspected ransomware attack while keeping schtum about the key details.

Progress updates posted to its website are still referring to the widespread outage as a "cyber incident," failing to even confirm whether data has been compromised or whether ransomware is involved, which some experts insist to be the case .

The Register has repeatedly asked for a confirmation or denial of ransomware's involvement from the council, but after ignoring us for ten days it finally replied today, only to say it still couldn't share anything beyond official statements.

The UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), which has been informed of the situation at the council, told us it continues to work with local officials.

Leicester says in its statement a criminal investigation into the "cyber incident" remains ongoing, and as such the key details surrounding it all can't be revealed.

"The UK government really needs a radical rethink on ransomware [in my honest opinion]," said security expert Kevin Beaumont at the time the incident was first disclosed.

"If you can't even say the word, you can't manage the problem."

Eerke Boiten, professor of cybersecurity at De Montfort University Leicester, said following the initial disclosure of the incident that the council has a good reputation when it comes to information governance and that he had "some faith" that any damage to sensitive data would be limited.

Earlier this week, the council extended its estimated time to recovery from the few short days at the time of disclosure, to "at least two weeks."

Richard Sword, strategic director of city development and neighborhood services at the council, said this week that "a good majority of staff are also back on the network," but its phone lines still require some work before they're back online.

  • More than 133,000 Fortinet appliances still vulnerable to month-old critical bug
  • Cyberattack gifts esports pros with cheats, forcing Apex Legends to postpone tournament
  • As if working at Helldesk weren't bad enough, IT helpers now targeted by cybercrims

Libraries and community centers remain open, and waste services continue to operate as normal, but access to public computers, Wi-Fi , and printing is down.

Some residents have had issues with the council being unable to collect their direct debits. The council will be writing to the affected individuals to inform them of the new date of collection.

Standing orders aren't affected and residents can still pay fixed penalty notices, which are issued for low-level crimes such as littering and not paying for car parking.

Emergency telephone lines have been established for critical services such as child protection services, homelessness, and housing repairs while the recovery efforts continue.

"We are making good progress with the recovery of our systems and are now in the process of switching them back online, with housing, adult and children's social care, and revenues and benefits being prioritized for this week," said Sword.

Residents were urged to only contact the council in the event of an emergency. They've also been assured that its website is still safe to use, and that they may trust emails coming from council sources, including any attachments that come with them.

"Many people in Leicester will be frustrated by these ongoing issues, but I'd like to reassure them that we're working as quickly as possible to get things back to normal," said Sword earlier this week.

"I'd also like to apologise for the disruption and thank people for their continued patience and understanding as we work to resolve these outstanding issues." ®
