Gunboat 66 catamaran CoCo de Mer capsizes at Round the Island Race

A photographer has captured the moment a 20-metre Gunboat 66 sailing catamaran named CoCo de Mer capsized during the Round the Island race on 1 July off the Isle of Wight, England. 

The competing yacht was carrying 14 crewmembers and a dog at the time of the incident, and it is understood that she was rounding a mark upwind off the coast of Bembridge when she unexpectedly heeled at a 90-degree angle.

An eyewitness account reports that "those on deck were literally grabbing anything they could to stop themselves from falling" while the pair of hulls continued to lift "until the mast splashed down onto the sea".

A passing six-metre RIB was the first respondent, followed by a support rib for the competing yacht Gladiator and a Border Force cutter. All passengers were safely brought into boats, including a crew member who remained on the port hull that was above the water.

First responders took floating debris into their boats, and fifty minutes after the initial incident the mast snapped and the yacht capsized entirely. Three crewmembers suffered from the effects of cold water immersion and were transferred to Bembridge RNLI lifeboat station for further medical attention.

John Keyworth, lifeboat operations manager of Royal National Lifeboat Institution Bembridge, confirmed that the yacht was removed the day after the incident and taken to a shipyard for repairs. She is expected to be fully operational after the repairs are completed.

Relegated to the second step of the podium in 3 out of the 4 previous editions, the Morrelli & Melvin design has finally won this year’s edition of the Multihull Cup. The event, held in Mallorca, out of Port Adriano, brings together perfectly prepared catamarans led by experienced crews.

Tim Thubron, the tactician on Coco de Mer , was absolutely delighted: “ We are all very happy, of course, as this is our first major victory in the Multihull Cup, having previously come second - the owner of the Gunboat 66 is delighted. The weather was a bit of a challenge at times with light airs, but we had three good races ”. Two other catamarans, that are also no strangers to the event, completed the podium: R-Six , an HH66, and Allegra , an 85-foot Nigel Irens design.

Coco de Mer Cleaned-Up Race Course at Multihull Cup’s First Day

Excitement was palpable this morning as mini armies of amped sailors made last minute preparations for today’s first day of the Multihull Cup, an annual regatta that celebrates some of the most technically advanced machines in sport: performance catamarans. 

Competing sailors have reason to be aflutter as outgunning the competition will be quite a challenge this year. From the 66ft lightweight flyer Dragon to this year’s largest entrant, the 84ft Allegra, this third edition of the regatta boasts a glorious selection of omnipotent multi-power.

The race committee selected a scenic course with the island of Dragonera, Mallorca’s western-most point, the upwind mark. This 24.74nm course made for a good match for today’s westerly winds (light at the start but a stronger 15-20 knots later on). Racing got underway at 12.25pm and those who weren’t there certainly missed out: experiencing a souped-up fleet of multis sail across the start line is quite something!

Coco de Mer ​and R-Six ​got away ​from the pin-end while ​​Dragon went over the committee end of the line. Both R-Six and Allegra made quick gains on the​ir way​ ​to the initial offset mark​ and it was the latter, the 78ft Allegra, who arrived first. Coco de Mer and R-Six followed 3 minutes, 37 seconds and 5 minutes, 37 seconds later, respectively. The ​up​wind leg to ​Dragonera​ saw ​some close racing between ​last year’s winner​ Allegra and the 66ft Gunboat Coco de Mer​, while the 6​0​ft Dragon, sailing with acclaimed designer Renaud Bañuls onboard, managed to keep seasoned racer R-Six​ at bay. The first of the Gunboats 66 built,​Coco de Mer, led this year’s giant of the fleet, Allegra, around Dragonera’s North and South marks. Dragon, a lightweight cat, held the upper hand over the HH Super Cat R-Six, she rounded fourth. 

​The downwind leg saw Coco de Mer’s bright red spinnaker proudly puffed out and the team comfortably maintain her lead over Allegra. Coco de Mer crossed the finish line 15 minutes and 42 seconds before the Nigel Irens-designed Allegra. Dragon not only got to give her brand-new spinnaker a good run, this sharp-looking cat kept her control over R-Six, the youngest cat in the fleet​, and sped over the finish line third. 

“ The start didn’t go as planned for us but there was a shift right at the last minute which let us off the hook. We then had a drag race out to the left with Allegra, they are always our main competitors here. Then they tacked off, we tacked off with them. We struggled to hold them when they had the J0 up, which we don’t have in our wardrobe. However, they opened the door for us at the wind mark and let us back into the race. We got into the pressure going right and from there on we were just boat-speed, boat-speed, boat-speed” enthused Coco de Mer’s tactician Hugh Fletcher.

The 66ft Coco de Mer turned out a stellar performance today as the team’s spot-on maneuverings resulted in a first, and well deserved, bullet. She finished 28 minutes and 42 seconds before second placed Dragon on corrected time. Allegra, in turn, crossed the finish line 8 minutes and 56 seconds after today’s runner-up, also on corrected time. 

Celebratory drinks and a paella dock party in the Multihull Cup’s regatta village will complete today’s thrills and spills on the race course. Terraza Balear, high-end interior design studio and outdoor furniture suppliers, are behind the Regatta Village’s inviting set-up, ensuring sailors can unwind in comfort and style after a demanding day on the MHC-circuit.

Description

The first Gunboat, a 62 named Tribe, started out as a fairly spartan family cruiser (well, for Gunboat, anyway). Then came the 48. And then came the 66.

For many, the best Gunboat As the orders came in, new owners wanted more space  and the ability to carry more load for luxury kit, and so Peter Johnstone with Morrelli & Melvin added feet to meet the demand while keeping performance levels up and the Gunboat 66 was born. This length has since become the “sweet spot” for Gunboats with the new Gunboat 68 coming in at a similar length.

The extra feet gave room for four en-suite staterooms plus crew quarters with a huge living platform.

• Blistering sailing performance on all points of sail. The aim? Regular 300 nm days.
• The organisation of the boat, highlighted by that forward working cockpit
• The visibility and ventilation in the saloon
• The price. At least you won’t be spending as much as you would on a brand new Gunboat 68!
• Not as pretty as some of the other Gunboats. Thats subjective, I know, but she does look like they stretched the 62, but hey, I’m splitting hairs here. I’ve got to put something in the “Cons” section.

Sailing Performance

This is a Gunboat, and the Gunboat 66 doesn’t disappoint in this department of course. Even with all of your kit on, you will be sailing faster than the wind in single digit wind speeds and when the breeze fill in, the Gunboat 66 takes off onto a mid teen to 20 knot gallop. This is a boat that has inspired a number of newer designs such as the O-Yachts Class 6 catamaran and the HH66.

Signature Gunboat The forward cockpit feels like the nerve centre of the Gunboat 66. It’s the trademark for this luxury brand, a configuration inspired by Chris White’s Atlantic cats, and the perfected for this 66 footer.

You can control all of the sail systems from here and it’s organised to Space-X levels. Many Gunboats have a secondary wheel in the cockpit (another Chris White innovation) so that you can helm and manage your lines at the same time. 2 powered winches help with the considerable loads, with a manual winch for the mainsheet and traveller. The anchor windlass is also controlled from this space with foot controls. Although this is a 66′ performance cat, the systems have been designed for a short handed crew.

The aim is for 300+ mile days.  The self-tacking jib track allows you to head upwind easily with dagger-boards in each hull maximising your VMG. Because the 66 sails at such a clip, she generates her own wind, so you’ll be packing plenty of flat-cut sails to move you upwind in lighter winds.

It’s Carbon Baby Pretty much everything on these boats is built of carbon fiber. The designers went over the 66 with a fine toothcomb to keep the weight down and the result is a ultra-weight cruiser with the sail power, beam and length to carve up the field in a regatta.

Living Accomodation

The fully protected roomy aft deck flows seamlessly into the open plan saloon with it’s galley and sofas with the traditional Gunboat forward helm that spills out into the forward cockpit and working area.

Views. And Then Some. The most astonishing feature inside the saloon is the 360-degree views. Do you like a sea view? Prepare to spend much of your time with your mouth hanging open and with that forward cockpit door open, there is no need for air con: the breeze flows through the length of the boat. Most owners have fitted A/C anyway for marina days.

Under Power

The original power package was twin Volvo 55s, but many owner’s have upgraded to 75s.  They’ll push those fine cut bows along at 8.5 knots on one engine in a kind sea and 9.5 knots with both engines going.

Another design classic  from Gunboat. The 66 slips fast upwind, tacks tightly and roars away down wind while giving you all of the comfort and space of a luxury cruising cat. With its dagger-boards and retractable rudders, the 66 can take you places in the Bahama Banks and other shallow water destinations that luxury monohulls can only dream of.

Colben was born and raised in Ballito on the North Coast of South Africa. Colben grew up at the beach and has an avid love for the ocean. He grew up paddle ski fishing and more often than not was found out on the water hauling in tuna and mahi mahi. After Colben and Teagan met while working in a fishing shop, they bonded over their love for the ocean and future plans to go sailing. In 2019 they got married before setting out on the great adventure of crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Colben has worked on super yachts but much prefers the simple yet exciting sailing yacht lifestyle. Colben loves to be able to make other people’s experiences on the water amazing and exciting so they can share the love and passion he has for the ocean.

Teagan grew up in the small town of Ballito on the North Coast of South Africa. She worked at summer camp in the USA for a season and also traveled the USA for 6 months. Teagan loves to explore and learn about new cultures and places. After her family sold up everything they owned in South Africa, they bought a catamaran and started their journey sailing across the Atlantic Ocean from South Africa to Brazil. Over the last year and a half they made their way up to the Caribbean in search for beautiful new places, people and the best underwater life. Teagan loves to cook and bake and loves any occasion to bake for and celebrate.

High-speed A new 36-metre custom built passenger ferry has been delivered to Guadeloupe-based operator CTM Deher from the Kim Seah Shipyard in Indonesia. The new ferry, named MISS OUTRE-MER, was designed using Incat Crowther's digital shipbuilding process.

The digital shipbuilding process saw CTM Deher and Incat Crowther work closely together to deliver the complete digital ship design before physical construction began at PT Kim Seah Shipyard in Indonesia. In addition to the design aspects, Incat Crowther supported the operator with shipbuilder selection, commercial framework and due diligence, interior design and construction oversight of the project.

The new 316-seat passenger ferry has been designed to safely and efficiently service CTM Deher’s passenger and tourism routes in the French West Indies and is expected to begin operating in late 2023.

With a strong focus on elevating the customer experience,  MISS OUTRE-MER ’s main and upper decks are connected by a large midship staircase. The main deck seats 221 passengers and provides space for four wheelchairs while featuring a kiosk, TV screens and Wi-Fi for entertainment, as well as six bathrooms. The upper deck can transport up to 143 passengers, including 48 people in exterior seats.

Designed to service the busy tourist route between Trois-Rivières and Les Saintes in Guadeloupe, the vessel has several large cargo and luggage racks. Overhead gantries have also been installed to assist with the movement of large, heavy luggage trolleys.

The elevated wheelhouse on the upper deck provides the vessel’s crew with good visibility in all conditions.

Capable of reaching speeds of up to 28 knots, MISS OUTRE-MER is powered by twin MTU 12V4000 main engines and will have a service speed of 25 knots. Ever pushing to improve its service, CTM Deher has opted for Humphree HLS stabilisers to enhance comfort, which is of great importance to the customer experience on these routes.

We modulate the day at sea according to your desires and the weather of course... It's YOUR day... We are your guides. - We can sail out to sea for a swim in the open sea... - Observe if some dolphins want to visit us. - Anchor on a wild beach, meals on board the boat or on the beach... at your convenience. - Enjoy nautical activities with Kayak, Paddles, tow buoy, fins/mask. - Also let yourself be rocked on sunbathing The draft is very shallow, we can anchor in very little depth as close as possible to the beaches. The atmosphere on board is understood in simplicity, the meal taken from the bag, all the crockery equipment is available on board The fuel consumed is included in the overall price. Nous sommes vos guides. - Nous pourrons naviguer vers le large pour une baignade en pleine mer... - Observer si quelques dauphins veulent bien nous visiter. - Poser l'ancre sur une plage sauvage, repas à bord du bateau ou sur la plage... à votre convenance. - Profiter des activités nautiques avec Kayak, Paddles, bouée tractage, palme/masque. - Aussi vous laisser bercer sur les bains de soleil Le tirant d'eau est très faible, nous pouvons mouiller par très peu de fond au plus près des plages.
