Guns, Drugs, And Prostitutes: Police Raid Yacht In Nantucket Harbor

Jason Graziadei and David Creed • Sep 05, 2023

A 70-foot motor yacht anchored in Nantucket Harbor was raided by Nantucket Police and the federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) on Tuesday after a woman was evacuated from the vessel and taken to an ambulance waiting at the town pier.

The owner of the yacht, a retired physician, has been arrested and sources with knowledge of the investigation told the Current that authorities discovered guns, drugs, and prostitutes aboard the vessel.

The motor yacht Jess Conn , out of Georgetown in the Cayman Islands, was anchored in the horse shed area of Nantucket Harbor Tuesday morning when the woman was taken off the boat with the assistance of Nantucket Harbormaster Sheila Lucey and Nantucket Fire Department EMTs. The vessel was later boarded by personnel from U.S. Coast Guard Station Brant Point and a DEA special agent, who were assisting the Nantucket Police Department with the ongoing investigation

The owner of the yacht, Scott Anthony Burke, 69, of Key Largo, Fla., was taken into custody Tuesday morning and is now facing drug trafficking and weapons charges related to the incident and subsequent search of the yacht. He will be arraigned in Nantucket District Court on Monday, Sept. 11.

The initial response to the vessel was due to a "report of a female party, on board a yacht, who did not want to be there, was under the influence of narcotics, and possibly has overdosed," according to a police report.

Investigators, including a DEA special agent, boarded and searched the Jess Conn at 3:25 p.m., according to court documents obtained by the Current . They confiscated 43.4 grams of cocaine, 14.1 grams of ketamine, and two pistols - a .380 Smith  Wesson Shield and a 9mm Smith & Wesson - along with various ammunition.

After being read his Miranda rights following the initial boarding of the vessel Tuesday morning, Burke told police he was the owner of the boat, that the pistols belonged to him, and that he had a license to carry firearms. Police determined that Burke had a license to carry in Florida which had expired in September 2022.

On Wednesday morning, Nantucket Police Department Lt. AngusMacVicar shared a press release that stated Burke was initially charged with two counts of possession of a firearm without a license before the search of the yacht resulted in additional charges against him.

"The Nantucket Police Department and the DEA Cape Cod Resident Office continued an investigation and Burke was additionally charged with 1 count of Trafficking in Class B, 1 count of Possession to Distribute Class A, 1 count of Possession of a Firearm without a License, 1 count of Possession of Ammunition without a License and 4 Counts of Possession of a Large Capacity Feeding Device," the press released stated. "This case remains under investigation at this time."

Burke is a retired physician who practiced in Colorado and founded Denver Spine and Rehab. He is currently is the CEO of Injury Finance, LLC, which provides medical lien services for third-party liability claims.

Harbormaster Sheila Lucey said the initial call Tuesday morning was for a “wellness check” on a woman, but she declined to share any further details.

Coast Guard Station Brant Point’s executive petty officer Jeff Wecal said his crew was involved in assisting the Nantucket Police Department’s investigation and referred all inquiries to NPD.

The Jess Conn arrived in Nantucket Harbor on Aug. 23 after a voyage from Newport, Rhode Island.

The yacht was recently photographed by PowerYachtBlog.com  after it ran aground in May in Florida, but escaped without significant damage.

A retired doctor was arrested Tuesday after police allegedly discovered guns, drugs and prostitutes on his 82-foot yacht in Nantucket — following reports that a distressed woman had possibly overdosed and “did not feel safe” onboard.

Scott Anthony Burke, 69, was slapped with drug-trafficking and weapons charges after cops raided his luxury vessel, the Jess Conn, and uncovered the trove of guns, cocaine and ketamine, court records obtained by the Boston Globe allege.

The shocking discovery — and Burke’s subsequent arrest — in the harbor of the ritzy Massachusetts island were made after cops received a report just before 8 a.m. that a woman on board was in need of “medical assistance,” police said in a statement Wednesday.

The woman onboard “did not want to be there, was under the influence of narcotics, and possibly [had] overdosed,” the police report stated.

When officers came onboard, Burke allegedly led them to his bedroom, where they found the woman, who “appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance” and “stated that she did not feel safe,” the report added.

She was taken to the Nantucket Cottage Hospital for treatment, cops said, though her condition wasn’t immediately known.

Prostitutes were also found on the vessel, law enforcement sources told the Nantucket Current .

Dr. Scott Burke, right, is seen with his wife Ellen and children Connor and Jessica in an undated Facebook photo.

A subsequent search of the yacht allegedly uncovered about 43 grams of cocaine, 14 grams of ketamine, a .380 pistol, three 30-round 9mm magazines, and a 12-round magazine in a 9mm pistol, according to the police report.

Multiple rounds of ammo were also found on the yacht’s bedroom floor, the report added.

After being cuffed, Burke allegedly confessed that the firearms onboard were his and pointed out where several other guns were located.

“Scott Burke does not possess a valid [license to carry] or [firearm identification] card,” the report said.

The yacht's owner, Scott Anthony Burke, was taken into custody Tuesday morning following a raid on board the Jess Conn.

Burke was initially arrested on two counts of possessing a firearm without a license, police said.

He was later slapped with additional charges of having ammunition and possession of Class A and B drugs following the raid.

Burke — who has addresses in Key Largo, Florida, and Denver, Colorado — is a retired doctor who previously ran a spine and rehabilitation clinic, online records show.

He founded Injury Finance, a Colorado-based medical insurance company that provides lien services for third-party liability claims, about two decades ago, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Burke was first licensed to practice medicine in Colorado in 1981 but his license expired there two years ago, the state’s Board of Medicine records show.

He is scheduled to be arraigned in Nantucket District Court on the weapons and drug-related charges next Monday.

The shocking discovery -- and Burke’s subsequent arrest -- occurred in Nantucket Harbor.

Burke’s yacht is registered in the Cayman Islands.

Before arriving in Nantucket on Aug. 23, the Jess Conn had been anchored off Newport, Rhode Island.

Back in May, the luxury vessel ran aground off Florida — though it didn’t sustain much damage.

DEA Raid On Retiree's Yacht Finds Drugs, Guns and Sex Workers On Board

On Tuesday, the Drug Enforcement Administration raided a 70-foot yacht, the Jess Conn , anchored in Nantucket and reportedly found drugs, guns and sex workers on board. According to the Nantucket Current , they were tipped off after local police received a “report of a female party, on board a yacht , who did not want to be there, was under the influence of narcotics, and possibly has overdosed.”

The harbormaster and Nantucket Fire Department EMTs were reportedly able to get her off the boat and to a local hospital for treatment. A further search of the Jess Conn turned up 43.4 grams of cocaine, 14.1 grams of ketamine and two Smith & Wesson pistols. The owner, Scott Anthony Burke, a retired doctor from Key West, Florida, was arrested.

According to the police report, “The Nantucket Police Department and the DEA Cape Cod Resident Office continued an investigation and Burke was additionally charged with 1 count of Trafficking in Class B, 1 count of Possession to Distribute Class A, 1 count of Possession of a Firearm without a License, 1 count of Possession of Ammunition without a License and 4 Counts of Possession of a Large Capacity Feeding Device.”

Currently, there are no updates on the condition of the woman who was taken to the hospital, but in situations like this, no news is often good news. Hopefully, she’ll be back on her feet quickly. As for Burke, those drug trafficking and weapons charges probably won’t be easy to get out of. Then again, he’s rich enough to own a $7.5 million Nordhavn 80 , so he’s clearly got enough money to hire some expensive lawyers. Who knows? Maybe they’ll be able to negotiate it down to a fine and a few hours of community service.

On an unrelated note, back in early May, the Jess Conn was photographed in the Florida Keys after it temporarily ran aground .

What began as a woman’s medical situation on a yacht in Nantucket Harbor Tuesday morning devolved into a Florida man’s arrest by DEA and local police for gun and drug charges, according to the Nantucket Police Department .

At 7:47 a.m. on Sept. 5, the island’s police department got a call that a woman needed medical help on a boat in the Nantucket Harbor, police said. Police, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Harbor Master’s Office and the fire department responded to what the Nantucket Current described as a 70-foot yacht named Jess Conn .

The woman was found on the yacht and brought to Nantucket Cottage Hospital, police said. Harbormaster Sheila Lucey told the Current the initial call for the woman’s medical situation was for a “wellness check,” and her condition is unclear at this time.

Criminal investigation underway after woman evacuated from yacht off Nantucket, owner arrested

A massive yacht anchored in Nantucket Harbor became the center of a police investigation after emergency crews were called to the vessel on Tuesday morning to evacuate a woman who was in need of medical assistance, officials said.

Local police and fire officials, with the assistance of the Nantucket Harbor Masters Office and United States Coast Guard Station Brant Point, responded to the yacht just after 7:45 a.m. and located the involved woman and identified the vessel’s owner, who was also onboard, according to the Nantucket Police Department .

The woman was transported to Nantucket Cottage Hospital with unknown injuries.

The owner of the yacht, Scott A. Burke, of Key Largo, Florida, was arrested on charges including two counts of possession of firearms without a license, trafficking in Class B, possession with intent to distribute Class A, possession of ammunition without a license, and four counts of possession of a large-capacity feeding device, police said.

Burke’s arrest came after responding authorities found “guns, drugs, prostitutes, and other contraband” aboard the 70-foot yacht in the horse shed area of Nantucket Harbor, the Nantucket Current reported .

The Federal Drug Enforcement Agency was also said to be involved in the raid.

The Cayman Island-based yacht, nicknamed Jess Con, reportedly traveled to Nantucket from Newport, Rhode Island, in late August.

Additionally, the Current reported that the yacht previously ran aground in Florida back in May, but it didn’t sustain significant damage.

Investigators haven’t released any additional details.

Flagged in the Cayman Islands, the 80-foot yacht had pulled into Nantucket Harbor nearly two weeks ago, joining the legion of luxury vessels that visit the glamorous island each summer.

But before 8 a.m. Tuesday, police received a distressing call. A woman on board the yacht did not want to be there, police said, and needed medical assistance. She was under the influence of drugs and had possibly overdosed.

When officers, joined by Coast Guard personnel, arrived at the Jess Conn, its owner, a retired doctor living in Florida, led them to his bedroom, where the woman said she did not feel safe, according to a police report. In plain view, a loaded handgun rested on a bookshelf, police said. On the night stand was a plastic bag of cocaine.

As medics attended to the woman, who was taken to Nantucket Cottage Hospital, Scott Anthony Burke, 69, was arrested on gun and drug charges after investigators found more than 43 grams of cocaine, roughly 14 grams of ketamine, two handguns, and various ammunition in the main floor bedroom, according to a police report.

Burke, who lives in Key Largo, Fla., said he had a license for the guns, but authorities determined it had expired last year in that state, police said.

After Burke was read his Miranda rights, he told investigators “he was the owner of the boat, the bedroom they were located in was his, and that the firearms on the boat were his,” according to the police report. The report did not say whether other people were on board.

Burke was arraigned Tuesday on Nantucket District Court on charges of cocaine trafficking, possession to distribute ketamine, illegal gun possession, and possession of a large capacity feeding device, records show. He was ordered held pending a detention hearing in Plymouth District Court on Wednesday morning.

Burke’s lawyer had no immediate comment when reached by phone Wednesday. Burke didn’t return a call seeking comment. A spokesperson for Cape and Islands District Attorney Rob Galibois’s office declined to comment Wednesday, citing the pending investigation.

A supplemental police report said the initial call to authorities reported that the woman on the yacht “did not want to be there, was under the influence of narcotics, and possibly [had] overdosed.” Burke led officers to his bedroom, where the woman told police she “did not feel safe,” the report said.

The woman was given medical aid before she was taken to the hospital, officials said.

Burke was a physician first licensed to practice medicine in Colorado in 1981. His license in that state expired in 2021, according to Colorado Board of Medicine records.

About 20 years ago, he founded the Denver-based company Injury Finance, described on its website as “the industry leader in medical funding,” which was “created to serve an uninsured and under-insured population in need of medical treatment.”

The company said Wednesday that Burke has “no affiliation” with it.

According to Marine Traffic, a site that monitors vessel locations across the globe, the Jess Conn remained anchored on Nantucket on Wednesday. The yacht had arrived on Nantucket on Aug. 23 from Newport, according to Marine Traffic.

A Nordhavn yacht, the boat flies a Cayman Islands flag, meaning it’s registered there, and was built in 2021, according to the site.

The Coast Guard and Nantucket Police launched a probe after a woman was taken from Burke's vessel after a 'wellness check'.

The Jess Conn arrived in Nantucket Harbor on August 23 after a voyage from Newport, Rhode Island.

Law enforcement sources confirmed that other contraband was found alongside the guns, drugs and prostitutes, but did not go into further details.

It recently ran aground in Florida in May, but appears to have escaped without significant damage in the incident.

Coast Guard Station Brant Point's executive petty officer Jeff Wecal confirmed that his crew is assisting the Nantucket Police Department in its investigation.

The boat was designed by Jeff Leishman, and boasts four docks of over 24 meters each.

It has three large guest cabins, an owner's cabin, a laundry room, as well as a main saloon and formal dining room.

The yacht also has a hot tub on board, and can house up to eight guests as well as accommodation for two crew members.

Retired doctor scott anthony burke was arrested and charged after police and the us coast guard conducted a search of the yacht..

A retired doctor was arrested this week after police allegedly found guns, drugs and prostitutes onboard his 70-foot luxury yacht, which was found in Massachusetts.

Police took the owner of the yacht, Scott Anthony Burke, 69, into custody on Tuesday morning (September 5) after a raid onboard the Jess Conn.

The luxury vessel is registered in the Cayman Islands, the Nantucket Current reports .

A retired doctor has been arrested and is facing charges.

The yacht owner at the center of this bewildering discovery is now facing drug trafficking and weapons charges , per a Nantucket Police arrest log made public on Wednesday.

It all unfolded when a woman was removed from the yacht for a ‘wellness check’, Nantucket Harbormaster Sheila Lucey told the outlet.

She was transported to an ambulance on the shore, however, it is still unclear as to why she needed medical assistance.

Officers and the Coast Guard conducted a search which uncovered the prostitutes, drugs, firearms and other contraband.

An investigation is underway, as confirmed by the police, and an arrest was made, however no further details have been shared just yet.

“Yes, we are currently working on an involved case and, as a result, cannot comment on the details,” Nantucket Police Department Lt. Angus MacVicar said.

Prostitutes, drugs, firearms and other contraband were discovered on the luxury yacht (not pictured).

Burke is the owner of a medical insurance company and a spine and rehabilitation clinic based in Denver, Colorado. He also has addresses in Denver and Key West, Florida.

Before the yacht arrived in Nantucket on August 23, it had been anchored off Newport, Rhode Island and in May it was ran aground off Florida but avoided sustaining serious damage.

The retired doctor is scheduled to be arraigned in Nantucket District Court on weapons and drug-related charges next Monday.

The Nantucket Police Department released a press release about the investigation and charges on Wednesday morning.

“On September 5, 2023 at 7:47 AM, the Nantucket Police Department received a report of a woman in need of medical assistance, who was on a boat in the Nantucket Harbor,” the release states.

Nantucket is mostly known for its nature and lighthouses, like the Sankaty Head Lighthouse.

“As a result of this information, the boat was identified and located within the Nantucket Harbor Anchorage.

"The Nantucket Police Department with the assistance of the Nantucket Harbor Master Office, United States Coast Guard Station Brant Point and Nantucket Fire Department responded to the boat and located the involved woman and identified the owner who was also on board.”

On top of the arrests for two counts of possession of a firearm without a licence, Burke was also charged with one count of trafficking in Class B, one count of possession to distribute Class A, one count of possession of a firearm without a license, 1 count of possession of ammunition without a license and four counts of possession of a large capacity feeding device.

The case is still under investigation, the press release confirms.
