Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) is arguably the most influential NFT project in the world. For almost a year, it remained second only to CryptoPunks in terms of turnover. This collection led to the creation of other equally popular and large-scale projects: BAKC, MAYC, Otherside metaverse, ApeCoin. The history of BAYC is a living testament to how a couple of successful deals can change an entire market. If not for one prominent NFT influencer, BAYC might not exist at all. But more on that later.
Today’s review is about an amazing global success story that has led to over $2 billion in sales, NFT market dominance, and elite status.
Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) is a fusion of digital collectibles and an exclusive online community. Each Bored Ape is a unique digital character, created with over 170 distinct traits such as clothing, expressions, and headwear.
Moreover, owning a Bored Ape grants membership to the elite community, unlocking exclusive benefits. The value of these perks depends on an individual’s engagement with the concept. For instance, members can access The Bathroom, a collaborative art space within the cryptosphere, allowing them to contribute to a digital wall painting experience.
A more substantial advantage is that Bored Ape NFT holders possess complete commercialization rights for their apes. This means if you own a Bored Ape, you have the freedom to use it for various commercial purposes. In addition, each community member has exclusive access to the annual IRL ApeFest and participates in the project’s airdrops. And this, believe us, turns this valuable investment asset into 2-3-4 additional digital assets.
In general, we won’t tell you everything at once. Therefore, this comprehensive, up-to-date guide to the most prestigious ecosystem is for you.
Thanks to all these records, the project is included in the TOP of the best NFT collections .
Data (including exchange rates) are given at the time of publication (October 18, 2023)
Every BAYC possesses distinct features (168), categorized into 7 main attributes, each having various versions:
Some attributes are rarer than others, which makes these monkeys more collectible. Therefore, they are more expensive than others. For example, apes with Solid gold fur are rarer and more expensive than others. The floor price for these NFTs has consistently remained above 330 ETH throughout their sales history, having been offered for sale only twice. This rarity is attributed to their substantial investment potential, promising far greater returns in the future compared to a quick but less rewarding sale.
What sets this collection apart? It stands as one of the initial projects meticulously hand-drawn by artists, deviating from the algorithm-generated images prevalent in other collections like the renowned CryptoPunks. This distinction marks their first and most significant departure from the CryptoPunks phenomenon.
Let’s delve into the origins of this journey. In a twist of fate, a group of friends came together to establish their startup venture. They named their team Yuga Labs , driven by the ambition to construct a media empire exclusively dedicated to NFTs. Crafting Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) marked their inaugural stride toward achieving this ambitious vision.
Initially, all developers at Yuga Labs operated under pseudonyms, a practice they maintained until BuzzFeed unmasked two of them in a February 2022 article.
And the aliases are:
It was revealed that Gargamel is, in fact, Greg Solano, an author and literary critic, while Gordon Goner goes by Wiley Aronov. Sass and Emperor Tomato Ketchup, whose real names are Zeshan and Kerem respectively, both work as software engineers.
Prior to their involvement with BAYC, Gargamel and Gordon Goner had minimal presence in the crypto community, lacking any prior development experience in the field. Despite their lack of experience, both individuals had been active traders since 2017. Tomato and Sass were newcomers to the world of NFTs and cryptocurrencies. Nevertheless, the four of them collaborated, forming Yuga Labs, and subsequently launched BAYC under this banner.
Regarding the creation of actual art, none of the founders were responsible. The primary artist for the original BAYC collection is a woman known by the pseudonym Seneca, or the All-Seeing Seneca. Additional contributors included artists such as Thomas Dugley, Migwasher, and a couple who preferred to remain anonymous.
Before the inception of BAYC concept, the team at Yuga Labs was already immersed in project development. Yuga Labs realized that traditional art market concepts did not translate well into the digital realm. While paintings adorn living room walls, NFTs serve as social media profile pictures. Recognizing this shift, the team sought an “exclusive” feature for club members, giving rise to the idea of a yacht club.
Yuga Labs envisioned the club as a haven for early crypto and NFT pioneers, individuals who had ventured into the world of cryptography during its nascent stages. These early “apes,” having reaped the benefits of their earlier investments, found themselves in a leisurely state, spending their days on yachts or socializing in bars.
Reportedly, Yuga Labs swiftly attracted prominent crypto investors who backed this vision with their savings. With investments secured, the team commenced collection development, determining attributes, crafting illustrations, and securing a minting contract. The official release occurred on April 29, 2021, with NFTs initially priced at 0.08 ETH per ape (approximately $190 at that time). Initial sales were gradual, and by May 1, the momentum was still low.
However, the narrative took a dramatic turn when influential NFT personality, Pranksy , acquired nearly all the monkeys, announcing the purchase to his extensive Twitter following. This event catalyzed a rapid transformation; BAYC’s collection completely sold out within 12 hours.
Remarkably, the BAYC team emphasized in interviews that they had no prior contact with Pranksy before the sale. In the subsequent month, BAYC experienced a surge in secondary sales, marking the beginning of its rapid ascent.
The widespread appeal of the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) can be attributed to several key factors:
When influential figures or celebrities own NFTs, it creates a desire for others to own them too. Notable personalities such as Jimmy Fallon and Justin Bieber owning Bored Ape NFTs triggered a surge in sales and excitement. This celebrity endorsement generates hype, a driving force in the NFT market. People purchasing BAYC at high prices today anticipate its potential expansion beyond celebrity social media profiles, envisioning its presence in popular media like Netflix shows, renowned games, and Hollywood movies.
The community surrounding the collection serves as a vital driving force. Members are drawn not only to the project’s existence but also to the exclusive privileges it offers, providing them a sense of belonging to an elite society alongside stars and celebrities. NFTs function as membership cards, granting access to exclusive groups. The more valuable people perceive their membership, the less inclined they are to sell their assets. Additionally, higher floor prices attract wealthy crypto traders, enhancing the community’s financial dynamics.
Unlike many projects in the market consisting solely of visual images and minimal backstory, BAYC stands out. After the initial collection release, the team expanded their initiatives, introducing two more collections, a governance token, and eventually, a metaverse. These interconnected projects are meticulously designed around the concept of monkeys, amplifying their value, significance, and impact. Notably, BAYC boasts a detailed project whitepaper outlining the team’s plans, providing transparency and assurance to investors about the project’s future trajectory.
BAYC’s value extends beyond mere collectibility, encompassing a robust social component.
Upon purchasing a BAYC token, buyers gain membership not just in the form of a token, but in an exclusive community of like-minded crypto enthusiasts. Membership privileges within this closed club continue to expand and currently include:
Remarkably, the creators managed to transform their monkeys into a cultural phenomenon. BAYC has transcended being merely an image; it now functions as a key to an exclusive community and serves as a status symbol. This transformation has led many individuals to invest substantial sums, ranging from tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars, in these digital images.
Notably, BAYC has garnered significant attention from celebrities. A-listers prominently feature NFTs as their avatars on social media platforms, incorporate them into videos, and even participate in events dedicated to these digital creations. This widespread celebrity endorsement has introduced BAYC to hundreds of millions of people, further enhancing its popularity and reach.
Bored Ape owners include:
Imagine, we have listed only a small part of the celebrities who have invested large sums in these bizarre works.
The Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) ecosystem is a thriving digital universe that combines exclusive NFT collectibles, vibrant community engagement, and innovative utility. With celebrities endorsing these NFTs and an expanding range of interactive experiences, the BAYC ecosystem stands as a pinnacle of creativity and community within the NFT space.
Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) introduces a collection of 20,000 uniquely mutated apes, each boasting an array of distinctive physical flaws. These mutations range from eerie rotting features to curious growths and even blurry snouts, making each mutant ape a truly one-of-a-kind creation. Upon the launch of the Mutant Ape Yacht Club, owners of Bored Apes were gifted a unique “serum.” This serum could be fused with their existing Bored Ape, resulting in the creation of an entirely new Mutant Ape character.
The purpose behind their creation was to acknowledge the enthusiasm of BAYC owners for the community, while also enticing more collectors to join the ecosystem. The initial price of MAYC stood at 3 ETH, and astonishingly, the entire collection was sold out within just one hour in August 2021, generating a staggering $96 million for the project team.
What sets MAYC apart is the introduction of innovative “serums,” randomly distributed among users. These serums hold the power to transform ordinary Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) monkeys into unique MAYC mutants. The serums come in three distinct levels:
You can also check out our ranking of the rarest MAYC tokens.
Bored Ape Kennel Club (BAKC) comprises 10,000 unique NFT dogs, each possessing distinctive traits. The collection is designed around a particular theme: a bored ape’s melancholy can be comforted by the presence of a faithful companion dog, bringing warmth and joy. Unlike the MAYC, the BAKC was exclusively offered to existing BAYC members. In June 2021, digital dogs were randomly distributed to BAYC owners for free as part of their perk – one dog for each BAYC. Within a limited timeframe, these members had the opportunity to “adopt” one of these 10,000 charming dogs. Notably, during the initial six weeks, a 2.5% royalty fee from secondary market sales was directed towards supporting no-kill animal shelters, adding a philanthropic aspect to the endeavor.
ApeCoin ( $APE ) serves as the economic management token within the BAYC ecosystem, fostering community development. It operates as an ERC-20 token specifically designed to empower the community of bored monkeys. Yuga Labs, the brains behind the BAYC collection, has integrated ApeCoin across all its products and services.
Why is this relevant in our article? Well, 15% of the total coin supply was distributed to BAYC holders, enabling them to engage in lucrative trading activities on various prominent cryptocurrency exchanges.
On March 19, 2022, Yuga Labs took the virtual world by storm, unveiling a captivating trailer for the highly anticipated Otherside metaverse via their official Twitter account. Unlike anything seen before, this metaverse is a masterpiece of gamification, combining elements of role-playing games with iconic characters from popular NFT collections including BAYC, MAYC, CryptoPunks, Meebits , World of Women , Cool Cats and others blue chips.
What sets Otherside apart is its unique collaboration with industry giants Animoca Brands and Improbable, promising a groundbreaking virtual experience. In this immersive metaverse, NFT enthusiasts can interact with digital assets from well-known collections, creating an interconnected universe of creativity and innovation.
However, what truly sets Otherside apart from the rest is its ambitious endeavor to create a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) metaverse. This bold step aims to seamlessly integrate diverse NFT universes, providing players with an unparalleled gaming experience that transcends traditional boundaries.
Today, Otherside is a strategic priority for the entire ecosystem, as recently confirmed by the company’s CEO, pointing out strategic focuses .
In April, 2021 the mint price was 0.08 ETH ($190). To visualize the price growth, we made a cut at the average price for 1 NFT:

Bored Ape Yacht Club is an NFT collectible created by Yuga Labs that was released on 4-22-2021. The project consists of 10,000 unique digital items living on the Ethereum blockchain. We categorize it as a pfp/avatar project and it's part of the Yuga Labs general collection.
Bored Ape Yacht Club is, along with CryptoPunks, one of the most popular digital collectibles in NFT format on Ethereum. If CryptoPunks can be considered the genesis of the PFP (profile picture) concept applied to collectible digital assets that take the form of non-fungible tokens, Bored Ape Yacht Club represents the refinement of this concept through a series of innovations.
First of all, the Bored Ape Yacht Club nfts are not only presented as a digital collectible that follows the canon established by CryptoPunks -with a supply capped at 10,000 units and an attribute system linked to rarity. Rather, each Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT represents a membership token to an exclusive digital hangout called the swamp club.
The second novelty is that Bored Apes Yacht Club implements a much more generous licensing system for its IP (intellectual property), which allows owners of NFTs to exploit them commercially -for example, licensing all kinds of derivatives, editorial, and audiovisual products, or merchandising. The CryptoPunks, on the other hand, were launched under a much more restrictive IP regime, which allowed a level of exploitation by NFT holders to be capped and restricted to certain uses -although that is something that has recently changed, as a result of the acquisition of CryptoPunks and Meebits IP from Larva Labs by Yuga Labs, creators of Bored Ape Yacht Club.
In this article, we'll take a look at what Bored Ape Yacht Club are, review their origins as a collection of NFTs, explore their distinguishing features, and show you what metrics are important to consider before proceeding to purchase your first ape monkey.
Bored Ape Yacht Club is a collection of NFTs on Ethereum, made up of 10,000 unique avatars with varying levels of rarity determined by a combination of randomly generated attributes. As we have already explained, one of the characteristics that differentiate this Yuga Labs project from previous ones such as CryptoPunks is that the NFTs work as membership tokens of an exclusive club. Being an NFT ape holder opens the door for you to participate in events, access airdrops such as the $APE token one (the Bored Ape Yacht Club coin), and many other advantages that are outlined in the Bored Ape Yacht Club roadmap.
As with CryptoPunks, the list of possible Bored Ape Yacht Clubs attributes is quite extensive and includes elements such as skin, mouth, eyes, background, clothing, and accessories such as hats. The mix of these elements varies greatly between apes and is one of the main factors determining the wide range of bored ape values. Those Bored Ape that present scarcer attributes -that is, they are present in a smaller number of NFTs- will be more expensive than those that are characterized by combining more common attributes.
As we can see, the value of bored apes is highly dependent on many factors.
Each ape is a non-fungible token that, unlike CryptoPunks, adopts the ERC-721 token standard -which makes it easy to integrate into all kinds of marketplaces without the need for wrappers. But what both collections do share is the fact that they belong to the PFP (profile picture) category which, as the name suggests, are perfect for being used as a profile picture on social networks.
But the similarities end there. While the creators of the CryptoPunks present them as an artistic project, NFT Bored Ape Yacht Club has taken a more commercial approach from the beginning. The idea is to develop a powerful brand that in the future could compete with large global franchises such as Marvel or Disney. A key factor in the promotion and viralization of the project has been the adoption of an IP (intellectual property) model that guarantees a commercial license to each holder of a monkey NFT. Having a license that allows the commercial exploitation of the NFT is an intelligent economic incentive of the first magnitude that manages to transform the commercialization and marketing of the project into a collective effort.
Another key factor that explains the success of the collection is that Bored Apes Yacht Club NFT is conceived as a kind of digital club. The community that has gathered around the project has organized events in various cities in the US, and also in other regions of the world, such as the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. One example would be parties to be held on a yacht and in a former Brooklyn Steel warehouse that would include a performance by The Strokes, Beck and Lil Baby during New York NFT week in November 2021. Bored Ape Yacht Club merch has also played an important role in the consolidation of the brand.
Also, the fact that Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs function as exclusive club membership tokens may be one of the secrets behind the incredible bull run (~1,898x in ETH and ~2,100x in USD) they experienced after their launch in April 2019. 2021 to today's date (March 2022). The price floor of a collection is the minimum sale price that a token holder is willing to accept to get rid of it. And the fact that the monkey NFTs have become a status symbol that grants access to exclusive events (where you can meet famous holders like Gwyneth Paltrow, Eminem, Shaquille O'Neal, Post Malone, Snoop Dogg, Mark Cuban , and Steph Curry) is an intelligent mechanism that discourages its sale.
As with the CryptoPunks, we can say that board apes have reached the Olympus of NFTs and have gone from being simple digital collectibles to becoming true status symbols. And it is that in a world in which everything tends to be digitized, the ostentation mechanisms end up suffering the same fate. The role previously played by refined Audemars Piguet jewelry and watches is now played by coveted and rare collections of NFTs that can be used as profile pictures on various social networks -especially now that platforms like Twitter implement verification mechanisms that certify that one really is the owner of the NFTs monkey in question.
The Bored Ape Yacht Club creator wasn’t a single person, but a group of 4 people operating under the brand Yuga Labs. Upon launching the collection on the market in the spring of 2021, Yuga Labs co-founders decided to adopt pseudonyms to protect their identity: Gargamel and Gordon Doner, who would adopt the role of founders, and Emperor Tomato and No Sass, who would take care of all development issues.
It is important to point out that although Yuga Labs was the creator of the collection and therefore the original repository of the intellectual property -which is assigned to each of the owners of an Ape-, the Bored Ape Yacht Club artist that designed the apes and their different attributes was a freelance called Seneca.
The pseudonym of the founders of Yuga Labs, together with the fact of opting for a generous intellectual property license system with the owners of the NFTs that make up the collection, would be one of the main hallmarks of the project. The 4 original members of the team would manage to maintain their anonymity until February 2022, when their identities would end up being revealed -without their prior consent- by the digital media BuzzFeed.
Gargamel and Gordon Goner, the two co-founders, would turn out to be Greg Solano and Wylie Aaronow, two thirty something lovers of literature and philosophy -especially the works of David Foster Wallace and the Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein.
Both would be surprised by the sudden success of their ape-themed NFT collection. At the time of its launch, Bored Ape Yacht Club would raise about 2 million dollars, but from there the thing would only grow and grow. During an auction held at Sothebys, more than 100 apes would be sold and around 24 million dollars would be raised - that is, almost a quarter of a million dollars per NFT on average. Numerous celebrities would begin to acquire Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs, including: soccer star Neymar, singers Justin Bieber, Snoop Dog and Eminem, actress Gwyneth Paltrow, athletes Stephen Curry and Shaquille O'Neal, and the investor Mark Cuban. Another event that would boost the popularity of this digital collectible would be an interview with Paris Hilton on Jimmy Fallon's famous late show, during which both would confess to being members of the select NFT collectors' club.
Along with the CryptoPunks, the Bored Ape Yacht Club would be protagonists of the NFT fever that would be experienced throughout 2021.
Several CryptoPunks with rare attributes would reach multi-million dollar prices, marking a record 8,000 ETH (23M USD) paid for an Alien in February 2022. The Bored Ape Yacht Club would not be far behind: in an auction held at Sotheby's Marketplace , a coveted gold fur belonging to @jimmyeth, CEO of NFT42, would sell for $3.4M USD, breaking all previous monkey nft price records.
It’s worth taking into account these single item record-breaking sales would be highly influenced by bored ape price overtime performance.
As we have already explained, Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT are PFPs or avatars represented as non-fungible tokens on the Ethereum blockchain, that act as a very special type of status symbol.
But, Yuga Labs would take a very different approach to Bored Apes NFT than Larva Labs did with the CryptoPunks. The latter would be treated as a kind of hybrid between a digital collectible and a pure work of art, detached from any utility beyond being a status symbol -although they can also be considered instruments to build a digital identity, a pseudonymous alter ego in the metaverse. But in any case, their value is individual, the CryptoPunks can be appreciated without the need to take into account the larger group of which they are a part.
Yuga Labs, on the other hand, would adopt an approach for the Bored Ape Yacht Club that would transgress the limits of pop art, to the point of turning the collection into something more than an artistic expression in the form of a digital collectible: the NFTs would act as membership tokens of a new movement, a brotherhood, a religion. The feeling of belonging is a very powerful human emotion, and the Bored Ape Yacht Club seems to have discovered the ultimate membership formula for a 21st century in which social networks and the metaverse will play a major role in our lives.
BAYC offers its members a certain mystique, the romantic idea of belonging to a select group of chosen ones embarked on a mission to transform the world - just like the secret societies did in the late 18th and 19th centuries. Bored Ape Yacht Club is not only public though, but also viral - thanks to its enormous potential for generating memes. That means that ape holders are not only members of a select club of owners, but also its main promoters through social networks.
But probably, the most important component of the collection’s masterplan to become a cultural franchise behemoth is Otherside - Bored Ape Yacht Club metaverse project. Instead of a traditional land sale, Yuga Labs reserved 30,000 Otherdeed for Otherside parcels for BAYC and MAYC holders, who could claim them for free. The remaining metaverse parcels (55,000) were only accessible for purchase after wallet pre-approval (KYC) for a price of 305 ApeCoin each.
There is no official taxonomy to classify NFTs, but in our portal you will see that we organize them based on five categories: PFP/avatars, art, gaming, derivatives and metaverse. As is obvious, the Bored Ape Yacht Club are NFTs of the avatar type or PFP (profile picture or profile image) that are used as status symbols or as a form of digital identity in social media and, in the future, in the metaverse.
As with all other PFP-type collections, each Boarded Ape is unique, but not all are equally valuable. Some apes have extremely rare typologies or attributes, while others are very common, which is often reflected in their price.
Unlike the CryptoPunks, the Bored Ape Yacht Club are not divided according to general typologies (sex or race). Instead, they are differentiated by a combination of 7 attributes, each of which presents a range of options:
Background color (8 variations). Clothes (43 options). Slope (6 options). Eyes (23 options). Skin (19 variations). Hat (36 options). Mouth (33 variations).
Among all these attributes, the type of skin has emerged among collectors as the most decisive trait for Bored Ape Yacht Club rarity. Specifically, the items featuring golden (solid gold) and psychedelic (trippy) skin are the ones that have reached the highest valuations (in some cases, several millions of dollars).
At the time of its launch in April 2021, Bored Ape Yacht Club mint price would be 0.08 ETH (which was equivalent to less than 200 USD at the time). In less than 12 hours, the collection would be completely sold.
Not long after the public sale, the collection started what ended up being one of the most epic bull runs in NFT history. The Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT price floor peaked at the beginning of May 2022 at almost 145 ETH.
The subsequent bear market that affected crypto, stocks and NFTs alike, also impacted Bored Ape Yacht Club price over time. The price of the most popular PFP collection tanked for some months, and eventually found at 48 ETH (floor price) in November of the same year.
After bouncing from November lows, Bored Ape Yacht Club led a general recovery of the NFT market, followed by a sideways trend that at the time of this writing still persists (a trend that has had the collection ranging between 60 ETH and 70 ETH for a while). That translates to a Bored Ape Yacht Club market cap of 600,000 - 700,000 ETH.
In a nutshell, we can say that Bored Ape Yacht Club price history has been bumpy, but with a very positive and constant upwards trend if we look at the whole picture.
Remember that on our website we track the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT floor price (the lowest ask price of the collection) by aggregating price data feeds from all the main marketplaces. Since that time all BAYC holders were able to mint one companion dog at no cost, from the Bored Ape Kennel Club (BAKC), for each Bored Ape they held.
In mid-August, the BAYC fixed the Arcade Machine, the final bullet from the team’s original roadmap. With the Arcade Machine fixed, Bored Ape holders received one of two separate Mutant serums (M1 or M2), which could be used on their ape. Using the Ape on their serum produce a separate NFT, from the Mutant Ape Yacht Club , that held the mutated version of their Ape and the respective traits.
In late September 2021, the team behind Bored Ape Yacht Club announced the BAYC Roadmap 2.0, which hints at a game, real-life meetups, a DAO, and more.
In October 2021, BAYC announced the coming of a utility token slated for Q1 of 2022.
On Jan. 20, 2022, BAYC launched its mobile game, Apes vs Mutants, on the iOS Apple App Store and Google Play.
In February 2022, Yuga Labs raised over $200 million from Andreessen Horowitz and others.
In March 2022, Yuga Labs launched ApeCoin ($APE) and opened the 90-day claim period for holders of Bored Ape Yacht Club and Mutant Ape Yacht Club NFTs.
On Mar. 18, 2022, Yuga Labs released a video featuring Bored Ape Yacht Club, Cool Cats, CrypToadz, World of Women, and Nouns NFTs. The note at the end of the video read: "See you on the Otherside in April. Powered by @apecoin."
On Mar. 28, 2022, Bored Ape Yacht Club dropped its official merchandise collection with a limited supply to holders only.

Millions were spent in gas fees.

Yuga Labs, the web3 company behind the Bored Ape Yacht Club, disrupted the entire Ethereum blockchain as a flood of users rushed to purchase NFTs representing virtual plots of land in its upcoming metaverse project, Otherside . A total of 55,000 Otherdeeds sold at a flat price of 305 ApeCoin , or around $5,800 at the time of purchase (via CoinTelegraph ), raising about $320 million in what was considered the “largest NFT mint in history.”
Otherdeeds are minted in BAYC’s native ApeCoin , but still require Ethereum for gas fees . A gas fee is the cost associated with a transaction on the Ethereum blockchain. Fees typically increase as the network gets more congested because it becomes more work to process a transaction.
Such a large volume of transactions during the Otherdeed mint caused gas fees to soar. As noted by CoinTelegraph , Reddit user u/johnfintech pointed out that some buyers shelled out anywhere from 2.6 ETH ($6,500) to 5 ETH ($14,000) in gas fees alone — more than the cost of an Otherdeed NFT (and in some cases, more than twice the cost). By the time the virtual land deeds sold out, buyers paid a total of about $123 million just to execute their transactions on the Ethereum blockchain (via Bloomberg ).
Yuga Labs issued an apology on Twitter shortly after the mint ended. “We’re sorry for turning off the lights on Ethereum for a while,” Yuga Labs said. “It seems abundantly clear that ApeCoin will need to migrate to its own chain in order to properly scale. We’d like to encourage the DAO [decentralized autonomous organization] to start thinking in this direction.” The ApeCoin DAO, the entity responsible for making decisions within the ApeCoin community, exists separately from Yuga Labs. The DAO’s decisions are carried out by the Ape Foundation’s Board , consisting of Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, Animoca co-founder Yat Siu, and others.
The disruption slowed transactions on Ethereum-linked services, like Uniswap, and caused the Ethereum transaction tracker, Etherscan, to crash. A number of users also reported losing thousands of dollars to gas fees in failed transactions. Yuga Labs promised to reimburse users for the gas fees associated with failed transactions, but it’s unclear what the refund process will look like. The Verge reached out to Yuga Labs with a request for comment but didn’t immediately hear back.
As outlined in a post days before the mint, Yuga Lab’s original goal was to avoid an “apocalyptic” gas war, or a sudden spike in gas fees due to high demand. It said it would ditch the popular Dutch auction style of minting, in which an NFT goes up for sale at a certain ceiling price and is then incrementally lowered over time. It employed an alternate method instead, selling NFTs at a flat price and opting to gradually allow more mints to occur over time:
Rather than resorting to a faux Dutch Auction, the Otherdeed mint will employ the following mechanic: the sale price will remain flat for the duration, and at the start of the sale, there will be an intentionally low per-wallet limit on the number of NFTs that may be minted (note, this is not “minted at once,” but “minted in total”). Once the initial wave of relatively low-gas transactions have been submitted, and the network starts to calm, the wallet-level minting limit will be increased to allow a second wave of minting - those who are satiated will sit this wave out, while those with more ApeCoin to spend will mint.
The mess of a mint prompted some users to propose ways to improve the process in the future. Will Papper, the co-founder of Syndicate DAO, a platform that lets users create web3 investment clubs, suggested that Yuga Labs optimize its contracts to lower gas fees and adjust its mint mechanism.
In March, Yuga Labs raised $450 million in funding to build the Otherside , a decentralized metaverse with elements of gamification. While it’s supposed to encompass Yuga Lab’s NFT brands, such as the newly-acquired CryptoPunks and Meebits , the company has goals to extend support to NFTs from other entities. A lot is still unknown about the prospective Otherside , but that clearly hasn’t stopped its enthusiastic community from investing in the project.

The Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) non-fungible token (NFT) collection led daily sales for the second consecutive day on Thursday, according to CryptoSlam data.
BAYC recorded US$1.55 million in daily revenue across 40 transactions involving 29 unique buyers and 43 sellers.
BAYC’s ranks second in all-time NFT sales, now at US$3.18 billion, behind Axie Infinity’s $4.27 billion.
For Thursday’s second-ranking collection Pudgy Penguins, which resides on the Ethereum blockchain like BAYC, had a sales volume of US$950,857.
DMarket on Mythos Chain came in third with US$710,878, dropping from the top spot it claimed earlier this week.
Immutable’s Guild of Guardians Heroes and Solana’s DeGods came in fourth and fifth respectively, both staying put for the second straight day.

Bored Ape Yacht Club, popularly called BAYC, launched in 2021, is a collection of 10,000 non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on the Ethereum blockchain . These NFTs are graphical representations of cartoon-like apes with specific traits. The characters have combinations of backgrounds, earrings, clothes, fur, eyes, expressions, and more that make them all unique.
The Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT was launched in 2021 at the pinnacle of the cryptocurrency bull market. Yuga Labs developed the Bored Ape Yacht Club. The Yuga Labs team comprised four core members who appeared under these pseudonyms in the early days of the launch: Gordon Goner and Gargamel (co-founders), No Sass, and Emperor Tomato Ketchup, who handled the technical aspects of BAYC.
BuzzFeed, a news publication, broke a story in February 2022 revealing two of the co-founders’ identities. This led the other two core members to also give up their incognito status and post pictures of themselves on X (formerly Twitter).
On March 11, 2022, Yuga Labs acquired the intellectual property for rival NFT collections CryptoPunks and Meebits, giving it ownership of the brand and logo of each of those NFT collections. CryptoPunks is one of the earliest NFT projects and was among the most valued NFT collections on the NFT marketplace OpenSea. It had a total trading volume of 1 million ETH before it was delisted in February 2022 for a copyright violation.
In a historic moment in September 2021, Sotheby’s , one of the world’s largest auction houses, closed its online auction for 101 Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs at a price of $24.4 million.
In a fundraising round led by venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, the Yuga Labs team raised $450 million. In March 2022, it was reported to be valued at $4 billion. Yuga Labs planned to use the capital to expand its activities and accelerate brand growth.
When launched, a BAYC NFT cost 0.08 Ether (ETH), the native cryptocurrency of the Ethereum platform. That was equivalent to $220 at the time. It sold out within 12 hours. By mid-October 2022, it had climbed to a “floor price” of 76 ETH, or approximately $100,418. An NFT's floor price is the minimum price allowed for an NFT within a collection.
BAYC garnered interest from a few celebrities, who purchased the NFTs at inflated prices. Some high-profile stars who flaunt their BAYC include “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon, who bought Bored Ape #599; NBA champions Steph Curry and Shaquille O’Neal; singers Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and Justin Bieber; and world-class soccer player Neymar Jr.
Contrary to popular belief, the images are not the non-fungible tokens. The tokens are a hashed version of the image's metadata, and the images are stored (hosted) elsewhere. The tokens are transferred when rights to the images are sold.
Whether the Bored Ape collection is truly worth millions of dollars has been hotly debated. Some believe the high valuations are simply based on speculation. But, in fact, rarity, demand, celebrity endorsements, perks, and project development have driven the collection’s value.
The array of BAYC’s unique traits and accessories are used to measure its value. The term “rarity” gauges how unusual an NFT is within a collection with an assigned number. In the BAYC collection, there are more than 160 traits, and each ape may have four to seven trait categories. These traits are background, clothes, earrings, eyes, fur, hat, and mouth.
The most expensive Bored Ape in the collection, BAYC #8817, was auctioned in October 2021 for $3.4 million on Sotheby’s Metaverse marketplace, an online platform dedicated to rare and extraordinary NFTs. BAYC #8817 had the Solid Gold Fur trait—making it a relatively rare variety of the NFT. Other characteristics of the #8817 token are the Silver Hoop Earrings and the Wool Turtleneck.
BAYC has enticed several celebrities and brands to own pieces of its NFT collection. Adidas contributed to the hype surrounding the NFT collection by launching “Into the Metaverse,” its native digital collectible, in partnership with Bored Ape Yacht Club, Gmoney, and PUNKS Comic.
Following the partnership launch, BAYC uploaded an image of a Bored Ape wearing an Adidas jacket on X. Gmoney tweeted a silhouette picture that displayed the Adidas logo. PUNKS Comic tweeted a picture of a character wearing a shirt bearing the Adidas logo.
Other celebrities, beyond those already mentioned, who bought BAYC include billionaire Mark Cuban, prominent X personality and DJ Steve Aoki, X personalities and musicians Post Malone and Mike Shinoda, and producer and songwriter Timbaland.
One of the distinctive features of the Bored Ape NFT, compared with other NFT collections, is the perks. Owners of Bored Apes have exclusive access to a private Discord group where they chat, network, and build relationships with other Bored Ape members, including celebrities who own a Bored Ape. Ape holders also have access to “The Bathroom,” letting them draw whatever comes to mind on a virtual bathroom wall every 15 minutes.
ApeCoin is the official currency for the Bored Ape ecosystem and is used to purchase BAYC merchandise, event tickets, and more. ApeCoin DAO is a decentralized autonomous organization whose members—every ApeCoin holder—govern the DAO’s treasury and decide on future projects by voting on proposals.
Also, owning a Bored Ape is considered a status symbol among many individuals, contributing to its popularity among a certain crowd.
Bored Ape Yacht Club has a community of active members, and the NFTs are actively traded on marketplaces. The ApeDAO consistently votes on funding for different project proposals and is searching for ways to further involve itself in Web3 development.
As of July 2024, the BAYC appears to be positioning itself for the future, but what that future entails is anyone's guess. While funded and apparently popular among a specific crowd, the project has somewhat faltered in finding its place in the market after its initial successes.
The price floor for BYAC on July 25, 2024, was 9.30 ETH, which was about $30,000.
A Bored Ape NFT gives you access to the project's Discord channel and ApeCoin, which can be used in governance activities within the ApeDAO.
The NFT collection still exists, and there is trading activity, but the NFTs in the collection have dropped in value compared to their highs in 2021. In July 2024, many were priced between $28,000 and $36,000, with a few in the $40,000 range.
BAYC has evolved into more than a profile-picture (PFP) NFT. It has set a new standard and pace for other NFT collections with the various additions and the project's evolution. Yuga Labs has introduced products built on the blockchain as well as physical products from the Bored Ape collection.
