THE 2024 LEARN TO SAIL PROGRAMME IS NOW CLOSED. CHECK IN AGAIN IN AUTUMN TO PUT YOUR NAME ON THE WAITLIST.

Every year we open a small number of memberships for individuals with no prior sailing experience. This is our Learn to Sail programme.

Our goal is to introduce the community to sailing by providing training, coached support and a community atmosphere in which to learn and build confidence.

What does the programme include and how much does it cost?

In 2024  the programme costs £300 and included the following:

A year's membership to the Brighton Sailing Club (normally £200)

RYA level 1 course (normally £325), 2 days over the weekend

3 hours of coached sailing every week, all season (worth £8 0 per session)

Free use of club-owned boats during the coached sailing sessions (usually £6)

A Safety boat to ensure you can get help if you need it whilst on the water

W ho can sign up?

To be part of Learn to Sail, you must be over 18 years old and live in Brighton and Hove.

Do I need previous sailing experience?

No previous sailing experience is necessary, but it helps if you've had some., do i need to own a boat, you don't need to own a boat as the club has plenty of boats for loan. you won't need to pay for boat loan when you're on the learn to sail programme; but every year after that you will pay a minimum amount (what it costs us to maintain them, which in 2023 was £6 a go)., what if i can't make the weekend coached sessions, this year we had 21 people applying for every 1 space available for this reason  we ask that yo u must be able to commit to attending the majority of the weekly saturday sailing sessions from the beach – we want those who will make the most of this programme to take the opportunity., c an i just come to the rya 1 training, unfortunately we don't offer standalone training. learn to sail is a programme for those who want to become members of the brighton sailing club but don't yet know how to sail., i applied last year but didn't get a space . how can i increase my chances, we, the members, organise this programme voluntarily (giving up our time to run it). mucking in and doing things together is how our club runs – there are no paid positions here. when we meet potential new learn to sail members, we are looking at our future fellow members., we want to know that you are enthusiastic to join us. that you understand what you're letting yourself in for (lots of fun but also sharing the workload). that you are willing to participate, engage and commit. when we meet you, let us know how you got interested in sailing, what your experience with water sports and other hobbies are, and what skills you would bring to the club..

Learn to Sail

Learn to Sail – RYA Sailing Level 1 & 2

Our “Learn to Sail” courses are the quickest, easiest and best value way to learn how to sail. RYA Sailing Level 1 & 2 course comprises of two, two-day courses, enabling you to progress quickly from beginner to a competent sailor in a controlled, safe and enjoyable environment. On our sailing courses you will learn to sail with crew and on your own, and once completed you will have the basic knowledge to hire or sail your own boat without an instructor onboard. For those wanting to move onto the bigger yachts your level 1 & 2 goes towards the RYA Competent Crew course and just requires one of our Part 2 - 3 day courses.

Courses included :

  • RYA Level 1  Sailing Course
  • RYA Level 2 Sailing Course

On our sailing courses we use our our Delphia 24 keelboats: This is a larger, more stable boat with a fixed keel which stops the boat from capsizing or our new RS Ventures which are smaller dinghies but also have keels for great stability. Both types are a great way to learn to sail, with the main difference being in the size of boats and the route you with to go in sailing. We would suggest the Keel boats are an excellent route into going onto the large cruising yachts or go for the Dinghy if you prefer something smaller and playful, with getting wet part of the experience! You can also mix up the courses, trying the Keel boat first and then going onto the Dinghy Level 2 for you second weekend

Club class will run again in september 2024.

Club Class is our way of introducing you to our key sailing activity of yacht racing via a series of practical participation sessions. You will learn practical skills at your own pace by spending time on-the water participating alongside racing crew.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA
