Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill reopens

By valarie harring - | jul 12, 2023.

Cathy Zellers enjoys some breakfast, and the view of the Caloosahatchee, at the re-opened Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill Tuesday. She praised the renovations but said the destruction at the park remains a sad thing to take in. Valarie Harring

For Blaise Adams and David Barden, the reopening of the Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill meant two things: some long-awaited breakfast favorites and the return of a weekday tradition.

Seated at a table on the deck overlooking the river where the Cape Coral Yacht Club pier previously dominated the waterfront, the two chatted with server Kayla Sallee, just one of the attentive crew who looked as happy as customers heralding the restaurant’s return following months of repairs in the wake of Hurricane Ian.

Adams ordered French toast, “as always.” Barden had the breakfast burrito.

“I just posted to Instagram,” Adams said when asked what he ordered Tuesday morning, the day after the grand reopening this week. “I put, ‘286 days we waited for breakfast.’ We come here every Tuesday.”

“We love it,” Barden said.

Cathy Zellers, a regular who has a family member among the returning staff, was also enjoying some breakfast as well as the unobstructed view offered at seats along the rail.

“It’s gorgeous,” she said of the effort to restore the open-air eatery, once featured on the Travel Channel’s “Food Paradise,” to its pre-storm glory.

She gazed out to where the pier, built by the city’s founders, stood for more than 60 years before storm surge from Hurricane Ian wreaked havoc along the Cape’s Gold Coast, flooding homes and scattering boats from docks and the Yacht Club’s marina slips like so many kiddy tub toys.

“It’s beautiful, but it’s sad to look at that,” Zellers said of the pier pilings and wreckage breaking the surface of the Caloosahatchee. “They did an awesome job fixing this up.”

Monday’s reopening was the best “first day” of which he’s ever been a part, said Boathouse General Manger Jay Collins, who added it took a lot of effort to get there.

Not only were there extensive repairs to be made to the building and restaurant’s sandy bit of beachfront, but a team to rebuild among returning and new staff members as well as some menu tweaks.

Perhaps the greatest challenge, though, may have been the location as the Yacht Club complex, with the exception of the leased restaurant site and some parking, remains closed.

Collins thanked the city for its efforts in helping get the business get back open.

“I’d classify it as a great success,” Collins said of the months-long effort to repair and re-open in the wake of the Sept. 28 Category 5 hurricane. “A few bumps along the way, but we did good.”

He was asked how much the effort cost.

“A lot,” he said. “It’s a big number, a lot of zeros.”

The city is looking at a big number as well, as officials have deemed the rest of the historic complex too costly to repair.

On June 14 the elected board voted 6-1 in favor of a resolution that states “Due to damage caused by Hurricane Ian to existing facilities at the Cape Coral Yacht Club, the City will be demolishing all existing structures and site features onsite.”

Council authorized $263,000 for additional design services for the “deconstructive preservation of the buildings” as well as for replacement design for the fuel tanks that service the marina and boaters that use park facilities.

According to the city website, “deconstructive preservation” means “the city plans to proceed with plans to deconstruct the Yacht Club Ball Room building while saving elements for reuse in the new facilities.”

Demolition is expected to begin in October.

Meanwhile, the still-closed Yacht Club Beach has a planned re-opening date of Aug. 31, pending state and federal permitting. The existing restrooms, two pavilions and the playground will be removed.

The public boat ramp, the marina and all other Yacht Club Community Park amenities will remain closed.

The Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill is at 5819 Driftwood Parkway.

Investigations into ‘skimmers’ remain active

Go By Boat: Boathouse at Cape Coral Yacht Club offers sunsets, drinks, fuel for you, your boat

Sit along the long railing at The Boathouse for the best views of the beach and fishing pier.

Southwest Florida features many restaurants that let you top off your stomach with a waterfront view, but few offer the opportunity to top off your boat's fuel tank as well. The Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill at the Yacht Club Community Park in Cape Coral is the rare restaurant with a fuel dock.

"It's nice because people can come in for dinner and drinks and pick up fuel here," said dock attendant Paul Alexander. "It's a perfect location."

More: Go By Boat: Dixie Fish Co. provides delicious trip back in time

In addition to fuel (including diesel), the fuel dock store offers sunscreen, live and frozen bait, cold beverages and beer, T-shirts and hats. The nearby boat ramp and trailer parking in the park provides handy access for those boat owners who have to launch rather than arrive by boat.

Beyond the convenience of the fuel dock, The Boathouse and its location is a draw unto itself. The completely open-air restaurant catches the breeze under the thatched roof of a double chickee hut, with additional seating at umbrella-shaded tables and individual seats at the railing. Although the long railing table is a tad narrow, these seats feature the best views in the house of the beach and fishing pier. Sit with a drink and watch the tide flow, the fish jump and the clouds move across the sky. The restaurant provides one of the grandest vistas in the Cape for watching a sunset.

With space to tie up as many as 30 boats along the canal seawall, this is where the Cape comes to relax.

Also unusual for a waterfront tiki-themed restaurant, The Boathouse starts serving at 8 a.m. and has live musical entertainment twice daily all year round in the afternoon and evening.

"We’re a daytime boat kind of place," said Billy Salmons, general manager. "Our busier times are lunch, and we offer breakfast."

The well-rounded beer menu offers something for everybody from a canned beer guy to a microbrew aficionado. The cocktail menu features many drinks crafted with artisan spirits from the local Wicked Dolphin Distillery as well as labels such as Deep Eddy.

The menu leans heavily toward seafood prepared with a tropical flair. The Florida salad features a variety of fresh fruits, and your choice of seafoods can be added for an upcharge. The red beans are spiced with cumin and are quite tasty ladled over the restaurant's signature island rice with pineapple and peppers, which is a side that can hold its own even without the beans. A menu standout is the key lime pie on a stick. Its thick, fudgy dark chocolate coating complements the tart lime custard and crumb crust well.

"We're your one-stop shop when you're headed out on the water for the day," Salmons said.

Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill

Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill

RESTAURANTS March 6, 2023 admin

Catching a sunset at the Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill is a Cape Coral tradition for visitors and residents alike. It’s the only spot in the Cape offering an unobstructed waterfront view of Southwest Florida’s brilliant sunsets. “The jewel of Cape Coral” is how the casual, al fresco restaurant and bar is referred to by Zak Kearns, vice president of Kearns Restaurant Group.

The Kearns Restaurant Group and McGuigan Restaurant Concepts opened the Boathouse on property that is part of Yacht Club Community Park in May 2014. Located on the shores of the Caloosahatchee River, the restaurant is situated on the only beach in Cape Coral. You can get a cold drink and a hot sandwich while your toes are in the sand.

Originally, the restaurant concept was a waterside outpost for the restaurant group’s wildly popular Ford’s Garage. The burger-driven restaurant that originated on First Street in downtown Fort Myers has since expanded to some two dozen locations nationwide.

While burgers are always good at the beach, this restaurant has more of an island tiki vibe. So, the menu evolved, and the Boathouse found an identity all its own, featuring lots of seafood, such as a blackened filet of mahi-mahi in a pineapple rum glaze.

Fried seafood baskets are one of the top sellers. Guests can choose from lightly battered and fried scallops, shrimp, chicken tenders, mahi-mahi fingers and grouper, or try a combination.

Grouper Bites are a signature dish. Nuggets of the local fish are fried until golden and served with curly fries. They also come as an appetizer, perfect for sharing. Made in a similar preparation are Florida Gator Bites . The crisp yet tender morsels of meat come with a house-made Everglades dipping sauce. And the rumors are true; the taste is quite like chicken.

Burgers may not dominate, but they still have a prominent spot on the menu. The Famous Boathouse Burger is another staple. The half pound of Angus beef is simply grilled and served with fresh basics such as lettuce, tomato, onion and cheese. For an extra treat, add applewood smoked bacon. In addition to this classic, there is a South-Western Burger , served with BBQ sauce. And for those who like a little spice, the Jalapeño Bacon Cheeseburger is the ticket.

Of all the items on the menu, it’s the Key West-inspired Authentic Cuban Sandwich that continues to get the lion’s share of attention. People come searching for the savory sandwich after seeing it featured on the Travel Channel show Food Paradise. Besides being layered with ham and pulled pork, this gets an additional burst of flavor thanks to slices of pepperoni.

Following Hurricane Ian, the neighboring yacht club is still closed and undergoing a massive overhaul. The boat docks are also being repaired. At press time, the Boathouse was still completing hurricane repairs and renovations. However, Kearns was on target for opening at the beginning of March and says the space will be better than ever.

The restaurant’s famous tiki huts were destroyed by the storm. But their original builders, the Seminole Indians, came quickly to the rescue. They not only rebuilt them, Kearns says they were made “bigger, better, and stronger than ever.”

More rail seating has also been added, offering great views of the water and beach. Seating is first come, first served at the lively bar where headturning, 32-ounce bucket cocktails are mixed. You can get almost any of the signature cocktails bucket-sized, then keep the container as a souvenir. The Liki Tiki is an award-winning mix of lemon and pineapple flavored rums, blue curacao, pineapple juice, sweet and sour mix and Sprite. Warning, it goes down easy on a hot day.

Tropic Like It’s Hot is more than a clever play on words. It’s a refreshing favorite with lime rum, watermelon liqueur, simple syrup and soda. You can’t have an open-air tiki bar on the water without frozen libations, and the Boathouse does not disappoint. Think piña coladas, daiquiris and hurricanes, to name a few.

The Boathouse does such big business for lunch and dinner, many people forget, or perhaps don’t even know that it is also open for breakfast. A great place for boaters to grab a breakfast sandwich to-go, the menu is also full of morning classics, including omelets, biscuits smothered in southern gravy, breakfast burritos, bagels and more.

Texas French Toast is a favorite. Thick pieces of bread are egg-battered and cooked until crisp on the outside and soft in the middle. Topped with maple syrup, butter and powdered sugar, it’s sweet perfection. There is even an Early Riser Happy Hour with drink discounts on breakfast cocktails such as mimosas and bloody marys from 8 to 11 a.m.

Whether you are on a date or with your family, you are more than likely to find just what you’re looking for – from food to ambiance – at the Boathouse.

The Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill is located at 5819 Driftwood Parkway in Cape Coral. By boat, it’s at Marker 78, or where the Flamingo Canal empties into the Caloosahatchee River. The restaurant is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Breakfast is from 8 to 10 a.m., with Last Call from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Private parties can be accommodated. Call-ahead seating is available. For more information, call 239-945-2628 or visit TheBoathouseUSA. com. The Boathouse has a second location in east Fort Myers, located at 17101 FL-31.

As a seasoned boater, I’ve had the privilege of visiting numerous marinas and yacht clubs around the world. However, there’s one particular spot that has left an indelible mark on my heart – the Cape Coral’s Yacht Club Community Park. Nestled in the heart of sunny Florida’s Cape Coral, this gem is a haven for boaters, offering an unparalleled blend of natural beauty, amazing amenities, and a vibrant community.

I remember my first visit to the park, the breathtaking views of the Caloosahatchee River, the meticulously maintained marina, and the friendly faces of fellow boaters. It was a different experience, one that made me feel right at home. I knew then that I had found a home away from home, a place where I could anchor my boat and my heart.

Since then, every visit to Cape Coral’s Yacht Club Community Park has been an adventure. Whether it’s exploring the park’s natural beauty, participating in the various events and activities, or simply enjoying the excellent amenities and services for boaters, it’s an experience that never gets old. And I’m not the only one who feels this way. Talk to any boater who has been to the park, and you’ll hear the same sentiment.

Cape Coral’s Yacht Club Community Park: A Boater’s Paradise

The Yacht Club Community Park is indeed a boater’s paradise. With its expansive marina equipped with top-notch facilities, it’s a place where you can dock your boat with ease, knowing that it is safe and secure. But it’s not just about the marina. The park is famous for its pristine beaches, offering a perfect spot to relax and unwind after a long day at sea.

Being a boater, I understand the importance of good weather for sailing. Cape Coral’s tropical climate is ideal for boating, with plenty of sunshine and gentle breezes. Even during the winter months, the weather remains pleasant, making it a year-round destination for boaters.

However, what truly sets the park apart is the sense of community. As boaters, we share a common love for the sea and a passion for sailing. At Cape Coral’s Yacht Club Community Park, this shared passion has fostered a thriving community, creating a space where boaters can connect, share experiences, and create lasting friendships.

Key Features of the Yacht Club Community Park

The Yacht Club Community Park is a treasure trove of features and amenities that cater to boaters’ needs. At the heart of the park is the public boat ramp with eight lanes, providing easy access to the river and the Gulf of Mexico. There’s also a fuel dock offering both diesel and gasoline, ensuring that you never run out of fuel while on your boating escapade.

One of the standout features of the park is the Boat House Tiki Bar and Grill, a popular spot among boaters. Offering stunning river views along with a variety of food and drinks, it’s the perfect place to relax and socialize with fellow boaters.

For those who love fishing, the fishing pier is a must-visit. It’s a great spot to cast your line and reel in a variety of fish, including snook, redfish, and trout. And if you’re new to fishing, the friendly locals are always ready to share their tips and tricks.

Why Boaters Choose Cape Coral’s Yacht Club Community Park

For many boaters, including myself, choosing Cape Coral’s Yacht Club Community Park is a no-brainer. The park offers a perfect blend of top-notch facilities, natural beauty, and a vibrant community. But it’s not just about what the park offers. It’s about the experience, the memories, the friendships, and the sense of belonging that the park provides.

Moreover, the park’s prime location is a major draw for boaters. Situated on the banks of the Caloosahatchee River, it provides easy access to the Gulf of Mexico, making it a perfect starting point for various boating adventures.

Finally, the park’s commitment to maintaining a clean and safe environment for boaters is commendable. Whether it’s the well-maintained marina, the clean beaches, or the safe and secure boat storage facilities, the park leaves no stone unturned to ensure a pleasant and hassle-free experience for boaters.

Exploring the Natural Beauty of Yacht Club Community Park

As a boater, I’ve always been fascinated by the natural beauty of the sea and the surrounding landscape. Cape Coral’s Yacht Club Community Park offers plenty of opportunities to explore and appreciate this beauty.

The park’s pristine beaches are a sight to behold, with their white sand and clear water. The lush greenery adds to the beauty, making it a perfect spot to relax and soak in the sun. The park is also home to a variety of wildlife, offering a chance to get up close and personal with nature.

But it’s not just about the beaches and the wildlife. The stunning views of the river and the Gulf of Mexico are something that you cannot put into words. Whether it’s the breathtaking sunrise over the river or the mesmerizing sunset over the Gulf, it’s a spectacle that never fails to leave me in awe.

Amenities and Services for Boaters at Yacht Club Community Park

The list of amenities and services for boaters at Yacht Club Community Park is extensive. From boat storage and maintenance services to fueling facilities and a public boat ramp, the park has everything a boater needs for a hassle-free experience.

One of the amenities that I find most beneficial is the boat storage facility. With both wet and dry storage options, it offers a secure place to store your boat when you’re not using it. The park also provides maintenance services, ensuring that your boat is always in top shape.

Another amenity that deserves mention is the Boater’s Lounge, a dedicated space for boaters to relax and socialize. With comfortable seating, a large screen TV, and a kitchenette, it’s a home away from home for boaters.

Events and Activities for Boaters at Yacht Club Community Park

There’s never a dull moment at Yacht Club Community Park, thanks to the numerous events and activities for boaters. From sailing races and fishing tournaments to boating classes and social gatherings, there’s something for everyone.

One of the highlights of the events calendar is the Annual Boat Parade, a spectacle that sees a fleet of beautifully decorated boats cruising along the river. It’s a sight to behold and a must-attend event for every boater.

The park also hosts various boating classes, offering an opportunity to enhance your boating skills and knowledge. Whether you’re a beginner looking to learn the basics or an experienced boater keen on honing your skills, these classes are incredibly beneficial.

How to Make the Most of Your Boating Experience at Yacht Club Community Park

Making the most of your boating experience at Yacht Club Community Park involves more than just boating. It’s about immersing yourself in the park’s vibrant community, participating in the events and activities, and exploring the natural beauty of the park.

Joining the local boating club is a great way to connect with fellow boaters and become a part of the community. Participating in the events and activities not only adds to the fun but also enhances your boating skills and knowledge.

Taking time to explore the natural beauty of the park is a must. Whether it’s a leisurely walk on the beach, a fishing trip, or simply watching the sunrise or sunset, it’s an experience that will leave you with lasting memories.

Testimonials from Boaters About Yacht Club Community Park

The testimonials from boaters about Yacht Club Community Park speak volumes about the park’s popularity among the boating community. Here are a few:

“I’ve been boating for over 20 years, and I must say that Cape Coral’s Yacht Club Community Park is one of the best places I’ve been to. The facilities are top-notch, the scenery is stunning, and the community is welcoming. It’s a boater’s paradise.” – John, a seasoned boater

Cape Coral is a vibrant, sun-soaked haven of natural beauty, and Yacht Club Public Beach is its crown jewel. Found on the southern outskirts of the city limits, visitors are greeted with powdery white sand and a blissful wave-lapped shoreline that stretches for miles.

Yacht Club Beach, located on the Caloosahatchee River offers more than just breathtaking views – it’s also home to an array of activities and amenities that will make your visit even more enjoyable. From lounging in the sun on a beach chair or swing, to trying out some water sports such as jet skiing or paddle boarding, there’s something for everyone here! The beach also has facilities like changing rooms and restrooms, plus a restaurant called The Boathouse that makes for a great lunch spot if you don't want to bring a picnic lunch after a long morning on the sand.  The Boathouse serves breakfast, lunch and dinner right at the beach.  It's so nice to sit outside in the sun and see the views of Yacht Club Public Beach and the river.  Live music is played on weekends.

The Boathouse

Even though our beach is small, it's perfect for families, and we don't have problems with partying spring-breakers, which is nice during March and April.

There's plenty of soft white sand and sunshine to please everyone. The beach is only a 15-minute drive from most of the Cape and parking is free.   Walk on the fishing pier, pack the beach toys, and bring a picnic to enjoy on the shoreline or a complete the day with a beautiful sunset and an evening of star-gazing.

When I homeschooled, we would whoop it up a bit ... we'd grab our books, bikinis, beach gear, and hit the sand!

Kids will love the shaded playground when taking a break from sand and swimming.

Yacht Club Public Beach Recreation

At Yacht Club Beach , the fun never ends. Apart from swimming and sunbathing, visitors can engage in various water sports, including kayaking, paddle boarding, and jet skiing. The beach also features volleyball courts, perfect for friendly matches under the sun. If you prefer a more laid-back experience, grab a book and relax under the shade of a palm tree, enjoying the gentle gulf breeze. The beach's amenities include restrooms, picnic areas, public boat ramp and convenient parking lot, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable visit for all.

It's fun to go to the Sunset Celebration, which happens the first Wednesday of the month from 4-7PM or 5-8PM,  depending on Daylight Savings, October - June.

New Cape Coral Yacht Club designs: Most on council like a coastal, Key West vibe

cape coral yacht club bar

Given three different design options for the new Yacht Club Community Center , most of the Cape Coral City Council is leaning toward a coastal, Key West-flavor architecture.

At a committee of the whole meeting on Wednesday, the city sought direction from the council on a design direction for the outside of the community building.

"It's a concept, just like we do with anything else, and as we are designing, things may come up that we want to shift and be nimble (on)," said Cape Coral City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn.

James Pankonin with Kimley Horn, a consulting firm focusing on public and private developments, presented the information about the look of the community building.

Cape Coral's Yacht Club Community Park, which includes a yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a beach, has been a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s but is set to undergo major renovations after Hurricane Ian delayed the original plans .

The current plans include a new two-story community center to replace the ballroom, removing the tennis courts, rearranging the area to accommodate a four-story parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new resort-style pool.

The city is also preparing for the demolition of the Yacht Club and its facilities in April as it awaits permits.

No estimates could be provided for the price of the new building.

"It will really come into how much of certain materials are needed and construction methods," Ilczyszyn said.

The city will have that information once they have 30% of the construction design.

Two public meetings for the designs are planned for April 2 and May 7.

After getting public input, the city will vote to amend its contract with Kimley Horn to approve all these changes.

The plan is to have these changes approved or introduced before the summer hiatus.

New Designs for the Yacht Club building

John Bryant with Sweet Sparkman Architecture and Interiors, a Sarasota-based design firm, said the goal with the new designs was to maintain the experience of the original Yacht Club.

The majority of the council preferred option one.

Design one:

Bryant described the first option as "coastal vernacular" and similar to the park buildings at Lake Kennedy and Yellow Fever Creek.

"So it's sort of informed by the current architectural work in 2024," Bryant said. "Kinda Key West."

Councilmember Dan Sheppard and Mayor John Gunter preferred option one.

Gunter said the design was the most pleasing for him.

Councilmember Keith Long liked option one and said he liked the Key West aesthetic.

Councilmember Tom Hayden liked option one.

Design two:

Option two is more informed by the current Yacht Club and would have a stone base and mid-century feel to it, according to Bryant.

"There's certainly opportunity to kind of further develop this option to have even more of the existing Yacht Club feel, but a different vibe, feel than option one," Bryant said.

He also said option two might be more expressive the closer they try to recreate the aesthetic of the old ballroom building.

Councilmember Jessica Cosden liked design two as it incorporated design elements of the old building though she lamented how similar it looked to the first design.

"I wish we could have done more, but I know it's hard with a two-story building, to make it look the same as a very unique one-story building.

Councilmember Bill Steinke said two would be his choice as well, but was wary of additional maintenance of natural wood products used in the design.

"As long as we can bring that aesthetic and keep the maintenance down, number two would be my choice," Steinke said.

Councilmember Robert Welsh said he could go either way, but he liked the look of two.

Design three:

This would be more contemporary and modern.

"Even with a more contemporary language, you can still have warmth, incorporating some wood elements and stone elements," Bryant said.

None of the council members expressed any favorability for the third design.

Inside the new community center

The Community Center will have an additional 10,000 square feet for a total of 47,000 square feet, a history room to remember the first ballroom building on the first floor, and more rooms for civic and community use on the first floor.

Additionally, the new ballroom has shifted slightly as the balcony area on the second floor has been expanded to wrap around the top of the building.
