The first thing to do is look at the accounting firm and see if it’s a good fit. Additional services that may be available include management consulting, creating and implementing a financial information system or reviewing transactions for future financing needs.

Otherwise known as a Certified Public Accountant, this financial professional helps individuals and organizations including businesses, government agencies and non-profit organizations stay current with business accounting, and tax and government filing requirements. It is known that each state and federal territory has individual requirements for CPA certification.

Enrolled Agents are authorized by the United States Treasury to represent tax payers before the IRS in administrative tax proceedings. Examples where EAs can represent clients include examination, collections or appeals proceedings. EAs are also able to act as a tax consultant and help clients with state and federal tax return filings.

Enrolled Agents Qualifications

Individuals looking to become an EA must meet the following criteria set by the Internal Revenue Service. First time applicants must hold a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PITN), have filed all required tax returns and not have any tax liabilities. From there, applicants must pass the Special Enrollment Examination (SEE). The SEE exam contains three parts. It evaluates a candidates' knowledge and competency relating to tax information and return preparation related to individuals and business for the first two parts. The final section evaluates practices and procedures for EAs and the necessary requirements they must following during proceedings.

Applicants who are former IRS agents may be able to obtain this status without taking the SEE. Based on Circular 230, former IRS agents with experience implementing or administering IRS regulations concerning employment, estate, gift, income or excise taxes may be exempt from the SEE. IRS agents must also have a minimum of five years in a taxpayer-engaging role such as a settlement officer, revenue agent or officer, tax or tax law specialist, appeals officer, special agent. Of the minimum five years of applicable experience, three of the years must have occurred within the applicant's five last years of service to the IRS.

In order to maintain enrolled agent status, EAs must fulfill 72 hours of continuing education courses and maintain ethical standards to hold this licensure.

The term Tax Professional, as the Internal Revenue Service defines it, encompasses a broad category of occupations that share tax preparation roles and responsibilities. While an IRS Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) is required by a professional to put together federal tax returns, different tax professionals can represent tax filers under different circumstances. Attorneys, Enrolled Agents and Certified Public Accounts have “Unlimited Representation Rights.” This class of professionals may provide representation for clients during an appeal, audit or remittance matter.

If a tax professional does not hold any of the three professional licenses, the ability to represent clients is much more limited through the so-called "Limited Representation Rights" designation. PITN holders that participate in the "Annual Filing Season Program" may only represent individuals before the IRS if they have prepared and executed a client's taxes and may only do so in front of customer service and revenue agents (or similar), which also encompasses the Taxpayer Advocate Service. For tax preparers with a PITN only, they only have "Limited Representation Rights" for tax returns they prepared and submitted on or before Dec. 31, 2015. For tax returns beginning on Jan. 1, 2016, these professionals are only authorized to prepare tax returns.

Shopko redevelopment, Thrivent plans, more housing: Major Fox Cities projects coming in 2024

A PPLETON — In 2024, Fox Cities residents can expect to see a grocery store move into a former Shopko building, new flights take off from Appleton, and other redevelopments modify the landscape.

The Post-Crescent followed up on previous reporting and talked with developers about major projects expected to be completed later this year in Appleton, Kimberly, Neenah and Kaukauna. Some developments may stretch into 2025 — or even further — while other longtime projects are getting closer to the finish line. Dozens of new housing units will become available for residents and local college students.

Here's what to watch for in the new year.

Downtown Appleton will see changes to Chase building, City Center Plaza

By the end of the year, developers hope to unveil the renovations and updates they've been working on at the Chase Bank building , according to David Baehr, owner of Oshkosh Investment. Baehr's group is redeveloping the property at 200 W. College Ave. with Lofgren Properties 6.

Chase will stay on the main floor, Baehr said, along with other commercial space. The upper floors will house 21 apartment units, and Baehr said he envisions the lower level as an entertainment venue.

A block east, Dark Horse Development and The Boldt Co., are creating the Fox Commons , a $33.6 million project to transform City Center Plaza . The goal is to bring "new life to the heart of downtown Appleton by creating a thriving urban hub," according to developers .

The structure will include Mosaic Family Health and Prevea Health, as well as Lawrence University housing. Developers expect students to move into apartments at Fox Commons  for the fall 2024 school year .

Thrivent readies plans for Appleton headquarters, campus

In spring 2023, Thrivent announced that it was going to change up its Appleton headquarters and surrounding 600 acres of land. The company said it doesn't need as much space anymore. Plus, the Ballard Operations Center, at 4321 N. Ballard Road, needs significant repairs, according to company leadership. So, Thrivent asked for the community's feedback on development options .

The company held a couple of engagement sessions in the fall and had a "great response," with good attendance and engagement, Eric Merriman, Thrivent's director of real estate and workplace services, told The Post-Crescent in December.

Merriman said they plan to refine a master plan and start working with the city on the first stages in 2024. The entire project is likely to unfold over decades, though, he said, and the master plan will serve as a framework along the way.

New flights set to take off from Appleton International Airport

Starting June 6, American Airlines will offer non-stop, daily flights to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport  in Texas.

Allegiant Air also added direct flights to New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport beginning May 17, and to Portland International Airport in Oregon, from June 15 to Aug. 13.

The Appleton airport is also undergoing a $66 million terminal expansion , which will include a new biergarten, upgraded restaurants and other amenities. The project broke ground in December and is expected to continue for the next few years.

Festival Foods will replace Shopko; Kimberly continues to redevelop former NewPage mill

Skogen's Festival Foods still plans to open a new location in the former Shopko building at 800 E. Maes Ave., in Kimberly. Construction is underway, and the company hopes to be done by fall 2024, Brian Stenzel, community involvement senior director, told The Post-Crescent in late December.

In the spring, the Kimberly Village Board approved the final phase of Cedars at Kimberly, the redevelopment of the former NewPage paper mill . Blue at the Trail will provide homes, duplexes and condominiums for about 250 residents.

The development's partners "are excited for groundbreaking on the first multiunit townhomes and single-family homes," Sam Statz, president of Hoffman Planning, Design, & Construction, Inc., said in a Dec. 27 statement to The Post-Crescent.

Construction is expected to begin in February or March, and these homes will be completed in mid to late summer, according to Statz.

The groundbreaking of the 870 Terra Blue Court building, with six stories and 45 condo units, will start "shortly thereafter," Statz said. This is the first of four planned riverfront condo buildings, along with four multiunit townhome buildings, he said.

The final stages of infrastructure improvements, including street paving and sidewalks, are tentatively planned for late summer 2024, according to Statz.

Barring further issues, Neenah apartment complex will start to go up

After months of delays, developer Tom Vandeyacht expects construction to begin in June 2024 at Bridgewood Luxury Apartments in Neenah, on the site of the former nine-hole Bridgewood Golf Course .

"As you would guess, this is subject to no additional economic chaos as we have had for the last few years with inflation and ever-increasing interest rates," Vandeyacht said in a Dec. 19 email to The Post-Crescent.

Vandeyacht said his team has "spent the last year and a half moving ground and doing sitework to prepare," and they will work on underground utilities this winter.

"We are thankful to the City of Neenah for our main entrance, the new bridge off Jewelers Park Drive ," he said. "It is mostly complete with just a few items to be completed in the spring."

More housing coming to Appleton, Kaukauna

An affordable housing development, called Rise Apartments , is under construction in Appleton. The property will open in phases , MF Housing Partners told The Post-Crescent late last year. Developers expect the two-unit townhome to open in February, the six-unit townhome to follow in April and the 40-unit midrise apartment building to open in June.

Baehr — who's working on the Chase redevelopment — said he's also creating 20 loft-style apartment units at 217 S. Badger Avenue in Appleton. Baehr hopes to finish in the next couple of months.

In Kaukauna, a $20 million project called Legacy Creekside Apartments will add 175 units on the city's north side. The first 50-unit building is expected to be done by summer, while the rest of development will run through the end of 2025.

Construction of the Dreamville Kaukauna Apartments on Lawe Street was previously expected to be finished by late 2023 or early 2024 . The city said on its Facebook page in August that increased building costs and interest rates led to delays. The project is set to be completed in winter 2024/2025, according to Abacus Architects' website .

The management of Moscow-City not only selected long-range, passive UHF RFID to implement in its controlled parking areas, it also chose to implement UCODE DNA , the highest form of secure RAIN RFID technology, developed by NXP Semiconductors.

“Underscoring NXP’s innovation and leadership in developing advanced RAIN RFID technologies, our UCODE DNA was chosen to be incorporated with the FEIG and ISBC implementation of the contactless identification system in the prestigious Moscow-City,” said Mahdi Mekic, marketing director for RAIN RFID with NXP Semiconductors. “This exciting project represents yet another successful deployment of NXP’s contactless portfolio, and showcases our continued ability to meet the high-security requirements of highly demanding applications without compromising user convenience.”

“UCODE DNA is considered the only identification technology to match the physical protection of a barrier with the cybersecurity necessary to truly protect entrances from unauthorized access,” said Manuel Haertlé, senior product manager for FEIG Electronic. “As a respected contactless payment technology company, FEIG applies security know-how from its payment terminals, which are fully certified according to the latest high-class security standards, into our RFID systems. FEIG vehicle access control RFID readers incorporate advanced secure key storage elements, supporting various methods for secure key injection.”

FEIG’s partner ISBC Group provided the knowledge and support for this successful implementation using  FEIG’s long-range UHF RFID . The resulting system enables authorized vehicle entry into areas reserved for private residential use or corporate tenants, while also allowing availability of temporary, fee-based visitor parking. Thanks to the cryptographic authentication of UCODE DNA, both the tag and reader must go through an authentication procedure before the reader will validate the data from the tag, which is transmitted wirelessly. This level of authentication is typically used in the most secure data communication networks.

“The system’s two-step authentication means that only authorized equipment can handle the secure protocol and the data exchange with the UCODE DNA based tag. Without the required cryptographic secrets, other readers would query the tag in vain, because the tag’s response cannot be interpreted or understood,” said Andrey Krasovskiy, director of the RFID department at ISBC Group. “On top of this, each data exchange in the authentication process is unique, so even if a malicious actor were to intercept the communication, the transmission is only good for a single exchange and the tag’s unique identity is protected from cloning.”

Established in 1992 and still growing, Moscow-City is the revitalization and transformation of an industrial riverfront into a new, modern, vibrant and upscale business and residential district. A mix of residential, hotel, office, retail and entertainment facilities, it is located about four kilometers west of Red Square along the Moscow River. Twelve of the twenty-three planned facilities have already been completed, with seven currently under construction. Six skyscrapers in Moscow-City reach a height of at least 300 meters, including Europe’s tallest building, Federation Tower, which rises more than 100 stories.

How do I transfer money online?

Sign in to your chase.com account and choose “Transfer money” under “Pay & transfer” on the navigation menu. Choose “Schedule transfer” and then choose the account that you want to make the transfer “From.” Then choose the account you're transferring the money “To.” You can do a one-time transfer or set up customized repeating transfers. Choose a transfer date and choose “Next.” Review the transfer details and choose “Transfer Money” if the information is correct. Then you’ll see a confirmation page with a transaction number for your reference. Please review to verify the information is correct before choosing “Submit Transfer.”

How do I access my account information and activity?

Sign in to your chase.com account and choose the account that you would like to see. The Account Activity page displays your payment and deposit information with your present and available balances at the top of the page. For check details, choose the check icon next to the transaction. You can see both the front and back of your checks. To print a copy of the check, choose the “Print Check Details” icon in the top right corner of the page. To verify that you’ve received a deposit, go to the Account Activity page and choose the check icon next to the transaction to see the deposit details. To print a copy, choose the “Print Deposit Details” icon in the top right corner of the page.

How do I make a payment?

Sign in to Chase Online℠ and choose “Pay & transfer” then “Pay Bills” in the navigation menu. Choose your payee, enter the amount, “Pay from” account and the “Send on” or “Deliver by” date, then choose “Pay This Bill.” Review your payment information and if everything is correct, choose “Pay It.” Then you’ll see your payment confirmation. If you're paying a private individual rather than a business, consider using Zelle ® .
