Swiss developer of technologically enhanced concepts and products, CODE-X, has developed the Code-X-Yacht, featuring a synthesis of solar technology and Formula 1 engines.

Built by an international team of experts, ‘Code-X’ unites radical purism, the optimal benefit of renewable energy and the sheer power of a racing machine in one boat. The limited first edition of seven yachts has been unveiled recently.

A flexible solar hybrid propulsion system enables both quiet, environment-friendly cruising in ports and coastal areas. The solar hybrid propulsion system works combined, as well as independent.

The yacht features clear and futuristic lines along with technological innovations. The design has replaced the conventional combustion technology types.

The yacht’s carbon hull lends it a shape resembling that of a bat featuring exceptional flight characteristics. Owners will be offered hull color options to choose from. The wheel is designed to be adjustable and the air conditioning system in the yacht can be operated solely by solar energy in standby mode. A whirlpool is featured on board. The seats are designed to be shock-absorbent.

This is the first from the stable of a limited edition seven yachts.

Read about the amazing Code-X in April’s Motor Boat & Yachting

We hitch a ride with Fabio Buzzi aboard V10, methanol-powered superboat

In the May issue of Motor Boat & Yachting , out this week, we take to the water in one of the most extraordinary boats we’ve ever tested.

The Code-X is a methanol-powered V10 superboat conceived by a Swiss scientist and built by powerboat racing legend Fabio Buzzi in Italy. SEE A GALLERY OF THE CODE-X

The boat was built to prove the potential of methanol as a fuel of the future, a clean burning liquid that’s a natural by-product of alcohol distillation.

The sleek 47ft catamaran is powered by twin 8.2-litre aluminium blocks taken from the Dodge supercar turning Trimax surface drives.

Don’t miss the April issue to read what happened when we hooked up with Buzzi to test the boat in Italy.

Sea Spectacles: 10 Cutting Edge Boats of the Future

wallypower-118-yacht_2

If you’ve spent any time in a harbor, you’ve noticed one fateful failure: most yachts lack any semblance of uniqueness.  While the sea may be filled with countless cookie-cutter ships, there are some designs that stand out strongly.  To celebrate the works of today’s greatest boat designers, here is a list of 10 yachts that truly push the cutting edge of sea-faring design.

The Solar Sailor Sun-Powered Catamaran

solar-sailor_1

The high seas — unobscured by trees or buildings — is the perfect location to harvest the power of the sun.  The Solar Sailor glides across the water on this axiom, fueled by the sun and its boundless energy.  Solar Sailor is not just one cutting-edge catamaran, but a series of ships powered by Solar Sailor’s system.  Be it a private yacht, a luxury cruise line or a colossal container ship, this system energizes the sea with the power of the anchor of our solar system.

EarthRace Biodiesel Powerboat

earthrace-biodiesel-powerboat_1

Like the Solar Sailor above, this boat is powered by the sun– but with an assist from the fruit of the earth.  EarthRace is a boat built to speed across the planet fueled by eco-friendly biodiesel.  Earth, water and seed were livened by the sun to sprout vegetation, and this vegetation was harvested to fuel the EarthRace superboat across our tiny blue planet.  EarthRace did so– and fast.  This amazing, high design ship sailed the seven seas in a mere 61 days (a world record!) powered without a single drop of oil.  That’s one hell of a feat… and this is one hell of an aggressive ship!   [ link ]

The Code X Yacht

code-x-yacht_031

Captain this catamaran across the clear seas and you’ll be the envy of everyone.  The Code X Yacht isn’t just pretty, she’s fast to boot.  Code X is a 48′ catamaran with 1420 horse power under the hood pushing this sexy beast to 80 knots.  If that’s too quick for your speed, take a look at the connecting piece over the catamaran– that solar panel will power an electric motor to 9 knots, a leisurely speed that’s perfect for entertaining sunset guests.  Fast and furious or green conscious, the Code X Yacht is hungry for the waters in your neck of the woods.  [ link ]

The Oculus Yacht

oculus-yacht_01

Oculus– in latin, the eye.  In this case, the “eye” in this yacht’s nomenclature is centered on the grand eye of the dolphin that inspired this design.  Oculus Yacht is a sea spectacle of the most true order, a shining example of aqua ingenuity in this watery world.   [ link ]

The Wallypower 118 Super Yacht

It’s official.  Ride the waters on this one, you’re either a Bond villain or a mad scientist.  The Wallypower 118 Yacht is an aggressive, angular poweryacht with the most progressive design on this list.  There is nothing more stylish on the seven seas than this Wallypower, and if you can prove otherwise, do so in the comments!

The Modern Houseboat by X-Architects

modern-houseboat-x-architects_1

Scoop this modern houseboat out of the water and drop it in the hills of Hollywood, it would appear no different than the mid-century designs that grace that landscape.  The Modern Houseboat by X-Architects is a sea-bound home with the metal structure, the floor-to-ceiling windows that would make the architecture world jealous.  Okay, perhaps it’s not that progressive, but this is one houseboat you cannot ignore.  Lovely… [ link ]

The Sea Shadow Stealth Warship

sea-shadow-stealth-yacht_1

If you see this one coming, you’re lucky– because it certainly won’t show up on your radar.  The Sea Shadow Stealth Warship is invisible to most radar systems of the 20th century, which is what made it a Navy secret until recently.  This sea-carving catamaran might be yours for a price, at it has faced retirement and is up for consideration by those at the Pentagon.  Can you imagine breaking the waves with this bad ass?  If money is no object, you might just be able to talk the Justice Department into pulling some strings for you… [ link ]

The Sea Phantom by Maritime Flight Dynamics

seaphantom_1

Does it look like a killer whale with corporate sponsor decals?  It does to us.  Then again, when you start it up, you won’t be laughing.  The Sea Phantom V-10 is a water-hungry sea beast with plenty of performance history.  Designed by Maritime Flight Dynamics, the Sea Phantom was built to reach cruising speed on the open water, then achieve a wing-bound “flight” to skip across the surface with it’s unique aerodynamic design. The Eden Luxury Motoryacht

eden-private-luxury-speedyacht-1

The old woody’s of yesteryear have given way to a fresh new design sensibility in the world of luxury yachts.  The Eden Motoryacht is only typical in it’s size and function, it’s design is as organic and progressive as it comes.  From bow to stern, head to toe, the Eden Motoryacht carries it’s passengers in ultimate sea-friendly style.  We wouldn’t mind being one of those passengers ourselves… [ link ]

The Oasis of the Seas Cruise Ship

oasis-of-the-seas_1

The world’s largest cruise ship– you’re looking at it.  While these images of the Oasis of the Seas may have been only renderings, this boat is now sailing on the open seas, passengers included.  The last time such bold claims were made, however, a ship of this sort sunk on its maiden voyage from Liverpool, England.  (side note– if this writer’s grandmother’s train hadn’t derailed en route to the Titanic back in 1912, you wouldn’t be reading this article right now.  no joke) [ link ]

If you had to break waves in one of these mega boats, which would you choose?  We might opt for that Wallypower yacht, we get excited thinking about how that one will break the waves.  Let us know which of these you might take into the wild blue yonder.  Afterward, check out these other TheCoolist features we think you might enjoy:

Code X Yacht

The CODE X yacht was built according to an idea of CODE X AG from Meggen (Switzerland). FB Design was responsible for the completion of the hull and the adjustment and coordination of the technical equipment within the hull. Without the professional expertise and the excellent know-how of FB Design it would not have been possible for the CODE X yacht to be realized as it is now presented. The CODE X yacht demonstrates a new dimension of yacht building and its claim the leading role when it comes to a harmonious combination of conventional and environmentally friendly propulsion fuels. The CODE X yacht stands for a new vision in yacht building. The core element of the CODE X yacht is the Silicon Fire drive. This innovative drive concept strives to make a significant contribution to the harmonious supplementation of conventional combustion technologies with alternative energy sources in the medium and long term. The Silicon Fire drive is available in two different versions. On the one hand, Silicon Fire can be added to conventional fuel. CO2 emissions can thus be reduced from noticeably to significantly, depending on the admix ratio of Silicon Fire to conventional fuel. On the other hand, Silicon Fire drives can be integrated in yachts which use pure Silicon Fire fuel. In this case, the Silicon Fire drive is completely CO2-neutral.

PERFORMANCE MARINE CRAFT

The CodeX for Code7 Marine has been a fun project and Code7 Marine has been a great client – they have the creative mindset to push us towards highly innovative design solutions and aesthetics. In addition, Code7 Marine has the boatbuilding talent and attention to detail necessary to properyy execute the design vision. The boats primary internal structures, house and cockpit are all high temperature cured carbon composites with honeycomb core where appropriate for maximum strength and minimum weight. All appendages are constructed of high temperature cured carbon composites as well.

At under 1200kg lightship weight the CodeX straddles the line between sport boat and coastal racer. She has the sail area to excel in light air and side foils to give her the righting moment necessary to perform in breeze. We are excited to see the Codex on the water during the Summer of 2021.

We waited a lot for her. She is built for crushing the waves. Super light carbon hull, huge sail area and canting keel. Just the first 3 things to mention.

What else?

We planed CODE10 to be fun boat for professionals, and weekend opportunity for the family as well.

This foiling 30-footer puts speed into shorthanded racing

I’m proud this month to bring you two reviews of boats designed by two of the many interns I have had in the office over the last 48 years, Mark Mills and Paul Bieker. I have had interns from all over the world. Most I never hear from again, but Paul and Mark have gone on to become leaders in their respective areas.

code x yacht

Mark, working out of Ireland, has been dominant in just about all the handicap systems in Europe over the last 20 years and has designed some beautiful Italian maxi boats. Paul is a world leader on foiling boats both power and sail. Begs the question: What could Mark and Paul have learned from the designer of the Baba 30? In fact, I asked both of them the question: What did you learn from your internship in my office?

Paul said, “I learned about the importance of good lettering and line weight.” Then he went on a mini rant, “Kids these days can’t produce a readable drawing!” I laughed.

Mark said, “I learned about the importance of drafting skills and how a design office was run.” There’s a certain irony to this intern thing for me. I could not find a college with a naval architecture program that would accept me. Too stupid. I’m an autodidact. Now they send students to me so I can teach them. I have always enjoyed working with interns. It validates all the effort I put into teaching myself.

We’ll start with Paul’s new Code-X one-design built in Croatia. Paul is a graduate of the naval architecture program at University of California Berkeley. I met Paul when he was 12 years old. Paul is scary smart. I lost track of Paul after the internship and then I began noticing his International 14 designs were beginning to dominate the “development” class.

I-14s are not one-designs. The I-14 rule allows for each design to be different so long as it fits the class rules. Paul was the first to move the rudder aft of the transom and then he added a foil to the bottom of the rudder. Paul is very modest but he contributed a lot of new ideas that you see today in I-14s. A few years went by and Paul designed a 35-footer for a local Seattle client, the Riptide 35. This was a very light, water-ballasted racer with a big rig and a blistering turn of speed. Several were built along with some bigger boats designed to the same concept. They were all fast. Paul worked for the Oracle America’s Cup team and is now working for the Italian Luna Rossa America’s Cup team. Not a bad addition to your resume. Paul works out of an office in Anacortes, Washington.

code x yacht

There are small, twin rudders. Upwind the weather foil and rudder are clear of the water. To calculate the D/L for both of these boats I added crew weight, which was a crew of five for Paul’s design. This gave me a loaded displacement of 3,623 pounds allowing 200 pounds per crewmember. This would be a max displacement for this boat. The foils provide enough righting moment that you can sail this boat with a crew of two.

Mark suggested I ignore DWL and use LOA for the D/L calculation. This makes sense given that both boats, once moving, will immerse their entire LOA. This gives us a D/L of 34.25 for the Code-X. Probably the lowest D/L I have seen. There is a full-length chine and the stem has reverse rake with the top chamfered off. I asked Paul if he thought that added to boat speed. He said “The client wanted it.” But he also said that this feature did more to clean up the airflow over the deck and added to the efficiency of the jib.

The construction of this all carbon fiber and epoxy boat is very interesting. The hull is split down the middle and molded in two pieces. There is no real hull to deck joint. The two hull halves are set on the cockpit sole and bonded. Then the stealth fighterlike small cabintrunk is added to bond the forward parts of the halves together.

The deck uses a Nomex honeycomb core for extra weight savings. The hull uses a Corecell foam core. The honeycomb core is very light but it does not like being bent. Paul used flat panels in the cabintrunk and artfully combined them to get a very sexy looking cabintrunk. The keel is all carbon with a 1,280-pound bulb.

The square-top main rig is huge. The SA/D using the loaded displacement is 33. If I dare use the light displacement, which is without the added crew weight of 3,623 pounds, the SA/D is 56! Imagine the off-the-wind SA/D with that giant asymmetrical chute. It won’t take much wind to get this boat planing.

The combination of the deep, fixed keel and the retracting foils makes this design unique. When I first saw this design I wondered how the foils and the keel worked together. I think I understand now. I wish I had thought of that when I designed the Baba 30.

LOA 31’2”; LWL 29’6”; Beam 9’6”; Draft 8’1”; Displ. 2,622 lb.; Ballast 1,280 lb.; Sail area 723 sq. ft.;  Auxiliary retractable electric pod drive; D/L 34.25; SA/D 33

Our best estimate of the sailaway price: $275,000

Code X Yacht – Formula 1 powered ultra boat built by the Cylons

Image

This amazing look machine is the Code X Yacht , an ultra performance hybrid sports boat. She’s powered by a pair of Ilmor Marine 710 horsepower V10 Formula 1 engines that push along at 90 knots (167 km/h). There is also a bank of solar cells to charge the lithium ion batteries and run the electric motors. Running on electrons will only get you 9 knots but it does mean you can slip out silently while basking in the sun.

The Code-X Yacht was designed and built by Code-X in Meggen on Lake Lucerne in Switzerland. The hull is made from Kevlar/Carbon Fibre, the canopy tilts up to let you out to the rear swim deck, it sleeps two and there’s a hot tub.

There’s a small drawback though, the twin V10s are a little thirsty meaning the range of the yacht is only 90km while running on (probably premium) dead dinosaurs. That’s ok though, Lake Lucerne isn’t that big.

Price? Yeah, well that’s available on application. Sorry.

The Code-X concept is a 47′ 7” yacht that employs both Solar and Formula 1 technology. The Swiss-designed catamaran can either engage its twin-Limor Formula One engines (710 hps each) and rip across waters at 80 knots, or switch to its twin electric motors and cruise at a more refined 9 knots. The electric engines can only run up to two hours on its lithium ion batteries, but has on-board solar panels to charge the batteries — altho how long it takes to charge them is left unsaid. (Despite the efforts of rendering the boat in real locations, the Code-X is nothing more than a beautiful design and skilled rendering. No plans yet on actually building the boat.)

Beyond its good looks and Kevlar/carbon shell, the Code X also employs a GPS-controlled ‘virtual anchor’ system that keeps the boat in a specific location utilizing its electric motors. No need to ever actually drop anchor, but that does seem like an unnecessary waste of electricity. Lastly, the boat is outfitted with phototropic-shaded screens and windows. All that aside, the real reason to own one is cos it would make for a helluva nice afternoon of topless tanning in St. Tropez…
