Northern Marine Yachts Is Back!

delta oasis yacht

BACK TO NEWS

I was particularly excited to learn that Northern Marine, known for its superb long-range expedition yachts, is back in operation. The yacht builder, based in Anacortes, Washington, has had its ups and downs in recent years, the most recent the untimely death of its owner. This is a shame, as Northern Marine is, in my experienced opinion, somewhat of the gold standard for expedition yachts operated without professional crew. Sure, there are other yards out there building long-range passagemakers to high standards, but the yachts from Northern Marine have a different heritage from most pleasure boats, and the difference is striking.

I first got to know the trawlers of Northern Marine in 1998 when I did a boat tour of Spirit of Zopilote, a new 62-foot expedition yacht built for Bruce and Joan Kessler. The 66-ton trawler was the first yacht from the new company. The production manager brought over two decades of experience at Delta Marine and was well versed in commercial boat building. Both co-founder Cliff Rome and Bruce Kessler had once owned Delta 70-foot trawlers and agreed these yachts were just too big. Something along the lines of 58 feet or so made more sense. This collaboration was the genesis of the new company.

My boat tour was so filled with interesting and unique information that my article was over 20 pages long, which is unheard of in magazine publishing. But everyone loved the depth of detail.

In the decades since, the company has continued evolving the long-range expedition yacht concept, gaining ever-increasing experience building 41 world-class yachts, each better than the last. New building techniques and technology allow the craftsmen to strengthen and reinforce fiberglass hulls, improve all systems with new levels of integration, and provide owners with the highest standards of finish and luxury appointments, essentially megayacht quality in a boat operated by a couple. Yet throughout this time, the company continues to pursue the basic premise of the ideal trawler-style yacht: seaworthy, quiet, comfortable, with plenty of room for fuel and stores.

So, the recent acquisition by Seattle Yachts is both welcomed and well timed. The work force can continue their mission. I have always been impressed by what boat builders, with experience building seagoing commercial fishing boats, bring to the table. Boats considered industrial strength, designed and engineered without compromise to keep the crew safe and protected in any kind of weather. Time is money, and there is no money to be made with breakdowns or equipment failures. Every component of every system must be carefully selected as the best solution for the job.

I spoke with Peter Whiting, partner of Seattle Yachts, about the recent acquisition. Peter is aware of the history and players of Northern Marine and is confident that the builder can now get back on track as the premier American yacht builder of long-range expedition yachts in this size range. Northern Marine is now the only yard in America to do so, a distinction that anyone looking to own one should carefully consider.

What makes these boats different from the pleasure boat trawlers developed since the late 1990s? In part, it comes from the commercial heritage. In typical pleasure boat construction, a boat is drawn by a designer, and then the builder figures out where to put all the equipment. If you have ever gone aboard some of these production trawlers at a boat show, this explains why one may find an oddly-placed, skinny access door into the engine room from the master stateroom or through the shower, or stabilizer actuators located inside furniture in a stateroom or other living space. Or an exhaust system that one must climb over to reach the fuel filters on the far side of the engine. And the pleasure boat practice that was popular years ago, of hiding all wiring and hoses and pumps out of sight, was to appeal to potential buyers used to a Mercedes or Lexus (when nothing under the hood is accessible). I recall many heated discussions with representatives from those companies, as I argued that was just plain wrong.

Spend time at the International Workboat Show in New Orleans, and you may get a glimpse of what I am talking about. Tugs, vessel supply boats, and offshore fishing boats are built with serious components that one won’t find at your local West Marine. Massive hydraulic windlasses, commercial fuel filling capability, pressurized engine rooms, paddle-wheel sight flow indicators on all hoses for easy visual inspection, sea chests to minimize through hulls, 360-degree engine access, articulated rudders, redundant autopilot systems, workbenches in stand up engine rooms, lube oil tanks, pre-lubing system to circulate oil before and after an engine runs, mechanical Murphy gauges on main engines to monitor oil and cooling water levels under way…the list goes on.

Need an analogy here? If Kenworth Trucks decided to create an expedition RV, I guarantee the vehicle would be vastly different from what Winnebago might come up with. Both are well-respected American brands, but the design spiral used by each is decidedly different, with different priorities. And it shows in these boats, especially when looking beyond the gorgeous, luxury interiors.

Experienced builder and designer Stuart Archer manages the Northern Marine operation today, and he views their big boat, commercial heritage as polar opposite from the pleasure boat industry. “Given where we came from, with a big boat mentality on all systems and equipment,” he told me, “we now must find ways to fit big boat components into the size of the trawlers we now build.”

Northern Marine is always looking for new ways to build a better, stronger, safer boat. The company pioneered a keel cooled, wet exhaust hybrid system that is the best of both dry and wet exhaust systems. The company is also known for its resin-infused fiberglass construction and reinforced hulls and bulbous bows.

Integrate the above focus with teams of highly skilled and experienced craftsmen capable of creating the most luxurious interiors and accommodations using the finest materials and finishes, hardwoods, granite, tile, appliances, and comfort systems. This is Northern Marine today, some 25 years later.

I have many fond memories of being aboard Northern Marine yachts. One that captures the essence of the expedition trawler lifestyle was when we anchored just off the beach in Thorne Arm, Misty Fjords National Monument. Not a soul in sight, no contrails in the sky. The four of us enjoyed a wonderful gourmet dinner seated at the dedicated dining table and armchairs, classic music playing quietly in the background. We watched a bear stroll along the beach, and as Joan turned off the music, an eagle landed on a tree branch not 50 yards from us. It was a magical moment, not a sound in the world save the faint hum of one of the boat’s 15kW generators.

On the same trip, and to emphasize the big ship capability of this Northern Marine yacht, when we approached a municipal marina in Ketchikan, Alaska, we encountered a strong wind blowing us off the dock. Bruce Kessler had my diminutive wife up on the flybridge, pushing both stern and bow thrusters’ joysticks in order to hold us next to the dock against the howling wind, while Bruce and I took our time to safely get our dock lines around massive bollards. Having two 30-horsepower, continuous-duty hydraulic thrusters made all the difference, eliminating the stress of what could have been a difficult situation. No electric thruster would have made the grade.

Months later, I enjoyed when the 64-foot Zeehaen arrived in Annapolis on its way up the coast. People on the East Coast were not familiar with this style of trawler yacht and at one point, the owner hosted a reception for a group of his new friends. Everyone’s eyes were wide open that evening, taking in the beauty of this comfortable yet elegantly sophisticated interior in a boat that looked utterly bulletproof, the very definition of rugged adventure. A very young James Knight (of Yacht Tech fame today) was on a nearby Nordhavn 46, and I remember his steady stare at the towering presence of this Northern Marine 64.

Stuart told me he is successfully getting his team back together, lead carpenters, mechanical techs, electricians, painters, and fiberglass crew and they are ready to move forward. He said their market niche has always been between 55 and 90 feet, as most couples feel that is as large as one couple can handle without crew.

Peter Whiting said they’ve started a 57-footer, and it is not too far along, so buyers could still have his and her tastes and preferences incorporated into the new boat.

I wish the Northern Marine team great success after the last few years of various difficulties. Now with the solid support and resources of the Seattle Yachts organization, the team can concentrate on what they do best: building world-class long-range expedition trawlers right here in Anacortes, Washington, fulfilling one dream at a time. As if to underscore the dream factor, Stuart added that he’s seen it over and over.

“The build process is every bit as exciting as using their new boat.”

I will follow the construction of this new Northern Marine 57, reporting on the progress, so stay tuned. Perhaps we can share in some of the excitement of the build process together. And if you happen to be the lucky couple who step up and make this raised pilothouse trawler your own, congratulations. You will own one of the finest expedition yachts in the world.

All of the critical nav/comm equipment normally operated on 120 volts can be powered by a MasterVolt sine wave inverter located under the pilot house command station.  The pilot house has its own 12-volt and 24-volt gel cell batteries each with a dedicated charger.  In the event of flooding in the engine room, these power sources will enable continued operation of the boat’s radios and emergency lights. If necessary, the batteries may be paralleled with the engine start and/or house batteries.  Any of the batteries on board may be charged by three different sources.  This configuration exceeds the Coast Guard requirements for inspected vessels.

The flying bridge is both a command center and a social center.  It has three control stations:  a centerline helm and two wing stations, port and starboard. Two white leather Stidd command chairs are mounted behind the centerline station.  The centerline command station has a plotter screen and the necessary thruster and engine controls to steer the boat.

The Stidd chairs can be turned to face aft, becoming part of a seating area that is completed by a wrap-around, built-in, well-upholstered bench and integrated high-gloss teak cocktail table.  The bench provides built-in storage which contains 6 survival suits.

The flying bridge sits under a permanent fiberglass Bimini hardtop custom built by C-Fab in Newport Beach, CA.  It supports isinglass curtains all around with zippered closures and roll-up tabs.

The Lower Deck is accessed via a stairway on the port-side of the galley. The Lower Deck has a single bunk crew quarters in the bow with a separate entry door and also a door into an adjoining bath. This bath also has another door into the captain’s cabin just aft and on the starboard side. The captain’s cabin has a separate entry into the hallway that runs the length of the lower deck. Across this hallway from separate entry into the captain’s cabin is the doorway into the Laundry Room. If the Owner is captaining the boat, the crew quarters and the captain’s cabin on the lower deck will serve as very comfortable additional guest staterooms.

Just aft of the laundry room door is the stairway up to the galley and the main deck.

Further aft off the lower deck hallway are two guest staterooms, one to the port and one to the starboard. Both are ensuite with full baths including showers and Head Hunter heads. The port-side stateroom has two single beds. The starboard-side stateroom has one double bed. Each stateroom has a hanging locker and generous under-bed drawer storage as well as built in night stands and shelf storage.

Aft of the two guest stateroom doorways is a water-tight door into the engine room. It is possible to enter and exit the lower deck through the engine Room and via a ladderway on the aft bulkhead of the engine room leading up to the aft deck.

Hydraulic power for the anchor, thrusters and stabilizers is provided from two independent hydraulic pumps, one driven by a power take-off on the main engine and the other driven by a power take-off on the forward generator.  A hydraulic oil reservoir with tank-mounted filtration is located on the starboard side of the forward bulkhead in the engine room.  Controls are located on the overhead switch panel in the pilot house.  There is enough hydraulic power to operate the bow and stern thrusters simultaneously.

The boat has two Technicold 36,000 BTU (3-ton) chillers with programmable SMVector Lenze variable frequency drivers. These units can be run together (in tropical or sub-tropical environments) or one-at-a-time. They cool a loop that passes through Acqua Air air handlers in each stateroom, the galley, the dining area, the salon and the pilothouse.

The air handlers can be easily (and individually) re-programmed to control electric heat coils in each air handler so that individual living spaces can be electrically heated while the rest of the boat is cooled by the air conditioning.

The boat also has a Kabola diesel furnace (in the lazarette) that heats the air conditioning loop (if the chillers are not in use.) This provides non-electric, highly efficient heat to all the living spaces as well as non-electric heat to the hot water heaters.

The boat’s electrical system is designed for self-sufficiency and overnight anchorage without running a

The boat has a 24 six-volt AGM deep cycle batteries connected in parallel which gives the “house” battery bank 2,490 Amp-Hours of current at 24 volts. In addition, it has two 4,000 watt MagnaSine inverter/chargers that enable the conversion of battery bank’s 24 volts to 120-volts for appliance use. With a generator on, or connected to shore power, the MagnaSines switch automatically to charging mode and replenish the “house” battery bank.

The boat has two 30 KW Northern Light generators either one of which running alone is sufficient to power all the boat’s electrical demands, even with clothes dryer, the convection oven, the refrigerator, the freezers and the air conditioner running simultaneously.

The boat has two 50-Amp shore power leads, on the bow and one on the stern, each with a 100-foot cable. Each cable is extended and retracted automatically by means of its own Glendenning Cable Master. Each cable connects to its down isolation transformer which then feeds into its own Comar Electric AutoShore 50 Amp/ 120V-240V power booster.

The boat also has two Phase 3 battery chargers, one for the main engine starting batteries and one for the generator starting batteries.

The Delta 70 is the iconic trawler yacht.  Its hull form is that used by Delta Marine to build 70-foot Alaskan crabbers.  ZOEPILOTE (today, TATU ). Built in the early 1980’s for renowned yachtsman Bruce Kessler, was the first Delta 70.  It was Delta’s first yacht.  Prior to ZOEPILOTE , Delta exclusively built fishing boats for the Alaskan fishery.  After ZOEPILOTE , only four more Delta 70s were built, including THUNDER (now, SEA LION ). The last was OASIS , built for Cliff Rome.  After OASIS , Delta built larger and larger yachts and today is acknowledged by many to be the finest yacht builder in America.

With her Alaskan crabber, full-keel, hull (6” thick at the turn of the bilge), with a 12’ skeg designed to support the weight of the boat sitting on the bottom, Sea Lion has proven sea keeping ability, and with her large fuel capacity, power generating capacity and water making capacity, she has inter-continental range and expedition self-sustainability.

Sea Lion’s interior has been transformed into a beautiful and fully functional living space.  The finest materials and the best craftsmen were used to give her a feeling of comfort, warmth and durability throughout.  The refit covered mechanical, personal features and systems but also made her more liveable.  The enclosed aft deck is a gathering space, a space where you can interact with guests and watch the cruise as you travel.  The flybridge is also another area that is fully designed for viewing your travels.  Sea Lion is a small ship that can go anywhere and take her owner and guests there in safety and comfort.

At 70 feet, with a 10½ foot draft, Sea Lion is roomier than many boats half her length.  Yet she is just small enough so that she can be owner-operated, and just large enough to justify a one- or two-person crew.

AS she lies today, she is fully found, and ready to sail to any destination in the world, or to cruise leisurely up the Inside Passage.  She is a truly unique trawler yacht.

Delta 70s Delta is known for quality builds and refits. The 70 series was very popular but became pricier with each refit and resale. I know 3 of the 70's, each a spectacular yacht; one of them was owned by a serious sailor who made the switch to trawler in purchasing a Delta 70 whose previous owner upgraded from a Nordhavn 62. The new owner did a massive (read expensive) refit at Hinckley and subsequently put her up for sale. If you can handle the price, they are seaworthy as well as special yachts. At the time of her launch, ARIANNA held the mantle as the largest all-composite 50-meter, full-displacement motor yacht in the world—and we believe she still does. With more than 820 gross tons ITC, a beam of nearly 34 feet, and over 7,500 square feet of living area, ARIANNA features an extraordinary amount of interior volume compared to other yachts her length. Built to travel and explore, ARIANNA is capable of transoceanic cruising with fortitude and grace.

ARIANNA was engineered as well as designed by the Delta Design Group, which implemented the owner’s vision of a Polynesian-inspired interior that’s elegant, comfortable, and suitable for a family at home on the seas. The interior is adorned with rare tropical hardwoods including macassar ebony, wenge, and koa. Balinese-inspired touches, such as a solid slab dining table with natural unfinished edges and colorful blown-glass lighting, are just some of the elements that complete the design. Other details include inlaid silk carpets, organic fabrics and textures, woven leather and natural stone.

Aside from her large interior volume, of particular note is the large owner’s suite located on the upper deck, including a stately lounge, private outdoor deck, dining area, and a customized room for children or family members. Forward on the main deck, where the master is traditionally located, is a fully equipped gym with a generous sauna, and a private office with an antique German-built safe. Both areas include stained-glass skylights and large hull-side windows.

Outdoors, ARIANNA has a variety of areas perfect for al fresco dining or lounging in the sun. There is a large aft seating area on the main deck, and the sun deck features a day head, Jacuzzi tub, sunning chairs, and a large island bar. Guests are shaded by a lightweight carbon-fiber bimini, and an elevator to all four decks allows guests easy access to her teak-decked oasis.

ARIANNA is equipped with twin Caterpillar 3512B engines that give her a cruising speed of 14.5 knots and a maximum speed of 16 knots. She carries 21,900 US gallons of fuel and has a range of over 5,000 nautical miles. Her main tender is stowed in a float-in garage; a smaller tender is stowed on the sun deck.

March 12 at 01:00 p.m. saw the official opening ceremony of the largest exhibition of boats as well as yachts, the  Moscow Boat Show , taking place in the lobby of the third pavilion Crocus Expo IEC.

Official Opening Ceremony of Moscow Boat Show 2013

Official Opening Ceremony of Moscow Boat Show 2013

Moscow Boat Show is rightfully called the main event in the Russian world of boats and yachts. The largest in Russia event has for the sixth time already incorporated the most impressive representatives of the yachting world and fans of this spectacular sport!

Last year the exhibition was granted the status of “UFI Approved Event” and it was listed in the calendar of International Boat Industry (IBI), which includes all exhibition events of international level in the yachting industry.

Moscow Boat Show provides the perfect platform from which to preview new products, evaluate market trends, and establish long-lasting and commercially profitable partnerships. Despite the dynamic changes taking place in Russia and the rapid growth of the yachting sector, the show continues to complement and reflect the industry’s demand and is a promotional opportunity not to be missed!

The exposition space has increased up to 45 000 sq m in 2013. More than 350 companies from Great Britain , Germany , Holland , Greece , Spain , Italy , Cyprus , China , Latvia , New Zealand , United Arab Emirates , Poland , Slovenia , USA , Sierra Leone, Turkey , Ukraine , Finland , France , Croatia , Montenegro and, of course, Russia (17 regions) participated in the show. The scale of the project confirms confident positions of its positive development.

Arcady Zlotnikov, Deputy Director General ZAO CROCUS INTERNATIONAL, was traditionally the first to take the floor at the official opening ceremony. He greeted warmly exhibitors, guests and visitors of Moscow Boat Show 2013 and presented high ranking guests of the ceremony.

Nikolay Krjuchek, Deputy Chief of the State Inspectorate for Small Vessels (SISV) of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of Russia, congratulated everybody with the opening of the show, noted it high status, significance and perfect prospects of development.

Vladimir Silkin, President of the Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS), joined the previous speaker and added that the show had become the major event in the Russian world of boats and yachts.

Ekaterina Grishechkina, Director of exhibition Moscow Boat Show, spoke about organizer’s work and expressed her gratitude to all participants of the show.

All speakers noted dynamic development of the branch which leads to the intensive growth of the exhibition.

Having wished to exhibitors and visitors productive work and conclusion of new contracts, guests of honor of the Moscow Boat Show 2013 cut red ribbon and invited everybody to the exposition.
