What Happened To Sailing Millennial Falcon?

Why is the Millennium Falcon so famous?

An extensively modified Corellian light freighter, the Millennium Falcon is a legend in smuggler circles and is coveted by many for being the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy. Despite her humble origins and shabby exterior, the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs has played a role in some of the greatest victories of the Rebel Alliance and the New Republic. The Falcon looks like a worn-out junker, but beneath her hull she’s full of surprises. A succession of owners, including Lando Calrissian and Han Solo, have made special modifications that boosted the freighter’s speed, shielding and firepower to impressive – and downright illegal – levels. The price of such tinkering? The Falcon can be unpredictable, with her hyperdrive particularly balky. Despite her flaws, she’s beloved by her owners – Han Solo and Chewbacca spent years searching the galaxy for the ship they once called home, rejoicing when they finally reclaimed her.

Who owns the sailing yacht Maltese Falcon?

Current Owner: Elena Ambrosiadou.

The Maltese Falcon Yacht and its Innovative Design. The Maltese Falcon yacht, built by Perini Navi in 2006, boasts a cutting-edge design by Ken Freivokh. Collaborating with Dutch naval architecture firm Dykstra, Freivokh introduced the first DynaRig on a large yacht.

Specifications and Accommodations. The SY Maltese Falcon accommodates 12 guests in 6 cabins, featuring five lower-deck staterooms and one upper-deck VIP cabin. Housing a crew of 18, the yacht’s transparent floors allow natural light to flood its interior. With a displacement of 1,240 tons and two DEUTZ engines providing propulsion, the yacht’s cruising speed reaches 14 knots.

Groundbreaking DynaRig Technology. The DynaRig system consists of freestanding, rotating masts with rigid yards that function as a square rig. Each of the yacht’s masts supports six yards, with sails trimmed by rotating the masts. The absence of rigging allows unrestricted rotation of the masts and yards for all points of sail. This innovative technology has made the Maltese Falcon one of the most photographed sailing yachts in the world, winning numerous awards and becoming an icon in the yachting world.

Which sailing yacht is owned by a Russian billionaire?

Sailing Yacht A is a sailing yacht launched in 2015. The vessel is a sail-assisted motor yacht designed by Philippe Starck (exteriors and interiors) and built by Nobiskrug in Kiel, Germany for the Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko.

Its propulsion consists of a variable-speed hybrid powerplant with two lineshaft controllable-pitch propellers that is sail-assisted by a three-mast fore-and-aft sailing rig. The freestanding carbonfiber rotating masts were manufactured by Magma Structures at Trafalgar Wharf, Portsmouth. Doyle Sailmakers USA manufactured the three fully automated carbonfiber/taffeta full roach sails. The furling booms were built in Valencia by Future Fibres. The rigging of the yacht was developed partially to be implemented on cargo ships and for commercial use. The vessel features an underwater observation pod in the keel with 30cm (12in)-thick glass. It is the largest private sail-assisted motor yacht in the world.

Sailing Yacht A was delivered by Nobiskrug on 3 February 2017, and left Kiel on 5 February 2017. It exited the Baltic Sea in light mode on near-empty fuel tanks in order to clear the Drogden Strait with minimum draught. It underwent final sea trials and the final fit-out at the Navantia shipyard in Cartagena, Spain. Boat International called it “the boundary pushing superyacht”. The yacht is owned by Melnichenko through Valla Yachts Ltd. of Bermuda, and was initially registered there at Hamilton. In December 2021 the yacht was moved to the Isle of Man flag and registered at Douglas.

Who bought the Millennium Falcon?

Following Solo’s death soon after, the Millennium Falcon became a Resistance vessel piloted by its new owner, Rey, throughout much of the First Order-Resistance War. In 35 ABY, the ship was once again captained by Calrissian during the Battle of Exegol, which saw a decisive victory for the Resistance and Jedi Order, before being returned to Rey, who had been newly dubbed a Skywalker.

The Millennium Falcon was a YT-1300 light freighter of the YT-1300f variety. Its basic shape was defined by two convex saucers welded together, a pair of front-facing mandibles and an outrigger-style, side-mounted cockpit with transparisteel viewports. Apart from the shape of its chassis, the Falcon retained very little of its off-the-dock instrumentation. Because its successive owners either upgraded or downgraded every system according to their personal specifications, the freighter ended up becoming a unique ship. These customizations, however, came at the price of reliability, and the Falcon was known to suffer frequent breakdowns in the heat of battle. After the circular military-grade sensor dish was lost during the Battle of Endor, the dish was replaced with the base rectangular model which was originally supplied with the ship. During the Battle of Crait, the Falcon again lost its rectenna, and it was replaced with a military-grade rectenna similar to that of the one lost during the Battle of Endor. Additionally, the Falcon had a dejarik table, which was installed by Lando Calrissian when upgrading the ship, featuring creatures found throughout the galaxy for the amusement of passengers and crew.

The Millennium Falcon’s Girodyne SRB42 sublight engines were heavily modified through the addition of a SLAM overdrive that rerouted energy for acceleration bursts. As a result, the ship could fly at a maximum speed of 1,200 kilometer per hour in atmosphere and 3,000 G in space. The stock hyperdrive of the YT-1300 series was replaced with a Isu-Sim SSP05. Although the regular SSP05 was a Class 1 hyperdrive, the one that equipped the Falcon had been jury-rigged “Vandangante style” into a Class 0.5 drive—twice as fast as most warships of the Galactic Empire. According to Ralsius Paldora, the Millennium Falcon’s hyperdrive failed 1.22 times more than the one on the YT-2400 light freighter. In addition to its renowned hyperdrive, which supposedly made the Falcon the “fastest ship in the galaxy,” the ship was equipped with a backup hyperdrive. It was much slower than the primary engine and often took several weeks or months to reach the nearest star system. A component of the engines was the engine coupling which caused the Falcon to malfunction when misaligned.

How old is the millennial falcon?

The YT-1300f light freighter designated unit YT 492727ZED was built at Orbital Assembly Facility 7, a Corellian shipyard owned by the Corellian Engineering Corporation, more than 90 years before the Battle of Starkiller Base. As was intended, the ship began its career as an intermodal tug pushing container in orbital freight yards. It once worked in the galaxy’s busiest spacelanes. Just after the Battle of Coruscant, it was docking in the Senate Office Building. Inconsistent records from the Bureau of Ships and Services indicate that the YT 492727ZED changed ownership more than once via unregistered transactions.

During the Clone Wars, the freighter was property of the Republic Group. The YT 492727ZED was registered by the Republic Group on the planet Ralltiir as the Stellar Envoy. At some point, either prior or during its ownership under the Republic Group, a military-grade rectenna was installed on the Stellar Envoy. Shortly after the end of the Clone Wars, the Stellar Envoy was involved in a collision with a bulk freighter and was seriously damaged. The wreckage was reconditioned by a salvager, who used several sections and modules from a scrapped YT-1300p freighter to repair the ship.

The ship had a number of owners over its service. At some point, the human gambler named Lando Calrissian won the YT 492727ZED in a game of sabacc, and registered the freighter under the name Millennium Falcon. Calrissian modified the freighter, inside and out, converting it into his own speedy sports vessel as Calrissian saw how powerful its freight-pushing engines were. As such, Calrissian modified the two cargo mandibles at the front into an auxiliary ship launch, thus turning the plain freighter into a unique starship. He also once explained the controls to Brea Tonnika of the Tonnika sisters.

What happened to the Millennium Falcon?

  • Prior to A New Hope, the Falcon was in the possession of Lando Calrissian. He lost it to Han Solo in payment of a gambling debt. This is depicted in Solo: A Star Wars Story, as well as the integration of Lando’s droid L3-37 with the ship’s computer.
  • After Solo’s capture by the Empire in The Empire Strikes Back, Lando, Chewbacca, and Leia take possession of the Falcon.
  • During Return of the Jedi, Solo leaves Tatooine aboard the Millennium Falcon, and on arrival at the rendezvous for the Rebel fleet he lends the Falcon to Calrissian, who pilots it during the Battle of Endor and the destruction of the second Death Star.
  • After the events of Return of the Jedi, the Falcon is stolen from Solo, ending up on the planet Jakku under the ownership of a scrap dealer, Unkar Plutt, 30 years after the Battle of Endor. In The Force Awakens, Rey and Finn commandeer the ship to escape the planet, only to be found by Solo and Chewbacca, who immediately reclaim the ship.
  • After the death of Solo, Rey pilots the Falcon, with Chewbacca as her co-pilot. The novelization of The Force Awakens states that Chewbacca willingly abdicates captaincy of the Falcon to Rey.
  • After the events of The Last Jedi, the ship becomes the base of operations for the remaining members of the Resistance.
  • After the events of The Rise of Skywalker the Falcon is again piloted by Lando Calrissian with Chewbacca.

Joss Whedon credits the Millennium Falcon as one of his two primary inspirations for his Firefly television show. The Falcon and the Falcon’s distinct shape appear in Star Trek: First Contact, Blade Runner, Spaceballs, and Starship Troopers. The manga series Berserk includes a Millennium Falcon arc.

SpaceX states that their launch vehicles (except Starship) are named after the Millennium Falcon.

I appreciate your authenticity and candor. I’ve been fortunate enough to join you for most of the journey and will miss seeing you regularly. These parasocial relationships are stronger than you might imagine. I wish you well and look forward to hearing from you again if and when it makes sense for you. Take good care.

Given time like this is the biggest gift. Imagine if you didn’t have it… say all the says and do all the dos because time is precious now and you have it. Above all else never forget that miracles happen every day. Sending prayers for comfort and healing to your family… Millie and the rest of us will be here when you’re back… safe travels.

Sad day indeed! I will miss all three of you very much, and i hope to see you again. It has been wonderful to follow your adventure from dinging the keel to installing a heater, and everything in between. Take good care of each other, and im sure i speak for more than myself when i say take your time, we will be here if or when you come back! Much Love ❤

Time with family becomes so precious when there is a limit on how much there is left, Adam I am so sorry to hear about your father. In 2019 I lost my leg in an aeroplane accident and I had a lot of time to re-evaluate my life during rehab and what I was going to do next with my life. You both have been such an inspiration to me telling your story and sharing your life on the ocean. Because of you both I am writing this sitting on my recently purchased Formosa 56 that I sailed back from New Zealand to Australia with my partner Leanne with only one leg. We are currently on the hard in Port Adelaide getting her ready to sail around the world next year. This would not of happened without your inspirational articles educational tips and professionalism on sailing and your effort in making these articles so professional. Thank you and I wish you both all the best and I hope to see you on the water one-day. You probably don’t realise how your articles inspire and also directly affect people’s lives. Much Love, Tim.

I’m sorry to hear about Adam’s Dad, but glad you’ve made the decision to be with family. I’m thankful that you chose to share yourselves and your lives with me and the rest of your viewers. You said that Millie was the star of the show, and as a sailor, I understand the sentiment, but it was your passion, compassion for each other, and joy in your life and relationship that kept me tuning in. I wish you all the best, and I hope someday to be able to spend time with you again.

Our thoughts are with you guys. Take each day as it comes and hang on to those positive memories. Thank you for being honest and true in everything you do. You are an inspiration to so many. Looking forward to seeing Milly in action again one day if that is the path you choose. Cheers, Phil (South Aust)

I am so sorry to hear about your father. My own father passed away from Esophageal Cancer, and like you we were given a time frame not a possibility of recovery. We certainly made the best of the time we had left and judging from your article you will do the same. I have loved your articles and I certainly hope in the future that you continue them. However, with that time you have left I wish for you the peace and joy of spending time with your family. Please take time to relive your adventures with your family and relive your shared experience. We did this with my father and it was one of the best experiences of his and our lives. Best of wishes.

I just went through a surprise triple bypass operation and my sister is dealing with ovarian cancer so life throws everyone a curve ball every now and then. The important thing to remember is to keep smiling and laugh at life. It helps tremendously. Look forward to your return when things settle down.

My heart is breaking for! Recently lost my mom, and was incredibly fortunate to have a lot of time with her in her last few weeks. Precious time that I would not trade for the world. We shared a lot of stories, a lot of laughs, and a few tears. There IS light for you on the other side of this event; be kind to yourself if it takes a while to find it.

Sending love from Maine 💙 The adventures you’ve shared here have helped me through some really difficult times, including end of life care with my dad. Your hearts and priorities have always been in the right place, as you are showing us again here. Safe travels home. We’ll be thinking of you and your family.

Im sorry to hear that my prayers go out to you and yours I just got back from visiting my younger brother cause he was diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer and they told him treatment is only going to prolong the inevitable so we went to visit with him Enjoy your time make good memories family always come first I’ll be burning sage and saying morning prayers for your family

A&K – you have your priorities straight, and your decisions make total sense. It is a tough situation but not a tough call. Make the most of this time, love your dad, each other, and those who want to help you. Shortly before his passing last year, Jimmy Buffett gifted us with Bubbles Up. When the journey gets long, dial up that song for some solace. It is a great message.

I am a medical physicist. My job is to oversee radiation therapy for cancer patients. They are special people and they have a way of surprising you. We hope your time with your dad is nothing short of wonderful and you have all the time that you both need. Your articles have been engaging, beautiful, funny, and engrossing. If you decide to return to YouTubeland we will be waiting. You two have a special talent and are a gift in this world. If you decide to move on to another life and other pursuits we hope you are rewarded with the joy and fascination and satisfaction and pure love of life that you have given all of us.

What can I say that hasn’t already been said. Been perusal you guys ever since the beginning. I always looked forward to your next adventure. That’s the thing about life, it doesn’t follow anyone’s plans. Change in plans is the real plan we can stick with. I wish you both much success in all your future endeavors and wish you and your family good health. Maybe we’ll see you both one day in the land down under, except you won’t be just two, may be three fours or five. Good luck and be well.

I wish you all good times with your family during a rough time. I will miss your appearance on my screen. You are an inspiration. I have now lived on my yacht two years. You have at least a small inspiring part in my decision to do so, and no regrets so far. Even tho I need to wait my retirement before I can join you in sailing far away. Fair winds and following seas. I wish you all the best in hard times. Best regards Torbjörn Ps. The Swedish archipelages are beautiful to sail if you want a goal to reach for. Ds

So very sorry for this news, for me because I’ve so thoroughly enjoyed your articles and your story, but of course mostly for you and the layers of heartache I’m sure you’re experiencing. Be assured, you are doing the right thing for the right reason. I do hope that when the time is right you will resume your adventures aboard Millie and be able to share them with us again. I have so appreciated the quality of your articles and your very enjoyable personalities. My best to you two and to Adam’s father and family.

I wish you the best thru the hard times ahead. Wish I could give you both a huge hug. This is the bittersweet. We never know when is the last time we are going to do a simple thing and once it is past you may not realize it for months. So many times I have drifted back to that last dance on the kitchen floor that my wife and I had before she was gone. We didn’t know that would the last one. But thru the tears we keep moving forward and look for others to create new moments with while we simultaneously cling to and try to push away the bittersweet from the past. I wish you guys all the best. I think you were the ones that got me hooked on YouTube sailing websites. I pretty sure you were the first I watched. You will be missed. Godspeed.

I will go back through your back catalog and watch all the way through including the adverts so you receive some money for the adverts from Youtube, it’s the best I can do as my business is has fallen apart but we want you back on the water when you come back to reclaim your boat after this sad even. I will see you when you get back perhaps next year if not before. Make a article to let us know when you return. Perhaps you can visit our beautiful British coastline, keep us informed. My love to you both.

We’re very sorry to hear your sad news Adam but know family time together will mean a Great deal to your parents and family. You’re doing the Best thing for them shows what Wonderful parents you have and that they’ve passed on a solid moral base to you. I’m sure they’re very proud of you. We can see Khiara has stepped up to the plate to carry on with articles and also see her heartfelt sadness for you and your family which can only come from Love….We will keep your family in our prayers for strength, comfort, and peace❤❤

I’m so sorry that the prognosis changed so dramatically! Of course I fully understand your decision to go home in this time of need. Sometimes unplanned deals are dealt 🙁 I have so enjoyed your articles, you kept my dreams alive and at 71 years old I am still planning new adventures. Of course, Millie was not really the star of the show, you guys were, and if you’d swapped boats I’d have defo kept perusal. I wish you much love and hopefully, when you’re ready, I’ll see you again through the marvels of YouTube 🙂.

It’s been wonderful, thank you. Family first, indeed. I lost both of my parents to cancer while in my 30’s, and, forty years later, I still miss them. I’m glad I took the time to help escort them gently into the hereafter. So, good for you two. Give us a whistle from time to time when you can. Godspeed.

Love you guys and will miss you. One of the best websites out there. Glad you have each other for support and to support family at this difficult time. We”ll be here if you decide to continue sharing the journey at some point and if not thank you for the journey so far. Hope you are proud of what you have achieved, you deserve to be. Very best wishes to you and your family.

I have followed your journey perusal every episode. Sad news but the right call. Hope you have as much time as possible with your Dad. Thinking of you and your family. We will be here if you feel like coming online down the road. If not, we support you as well. Take care of your family. Milly will be fine.

Well sad to see you close up shop, but family IS the most important part of life. Hope the best for the 2 of you and REALLTY thank you for your prospective on adventure (I’m better and more informed as a result you your travel and skills). Looking forward to some day Millennial Falcon II. Thanks so much for allowing us to look over your shoulders.

I know what you’re going thru, my brother has been diagnosed with cancer last year, and our little world fell apart… After alot of treatments, he’s doing ok, but it’s cancer.. it’s always in our minds. Take care of yourself and your family, and it was a really nice adventure following you! From the day you ran aground in the canal in Florida to all the COVID stuff in Grenada, thank you!

Best wishes. We were in the same sailing grounds as you last fall, heading north through the Hebrides and on to Norway. It is amazing sailing and scenery, and we really liked Kerrera Marina. Unfortunately we had to do this in fall, as both of our mothers had experienced falls and hospitalizations in the spring, delaying our journey’s start until August. We empathize with you, although our moms are now ok, in new living arrangements. Our hopes for the best of life for you and yours. Erin and Marie, SV Northern Brees.

Family has to come first, every time! I’m sure the boats in good hand but I’m in NE England if ever I can be of assistance let me know. I don’t mind a drive out or we have room for guest if needed. I will accommodate in any way I can. Please don’t hesitate to get intouch. Take care guys and do what best for yourself. I’m sure people will allways stand by you both.

I’ve been with you both since the beginning and I am so sorry to here about your father. It’s good that you both are going back home to be with family, since that’s the most important thing in life. I had a esophageal cryoablation about 10 years ago to clear up some possible problems that might occur down the road. Best of luck any best wishes for you and your family.

Lost my father a few years ago and live abroad, so I sort of know how this feels. I just hope you get to spend some quality time with your family, that’s the most important thing right now. Not if but when you come to Norway, I’ll have a good anker spot and a cold beer waiting 🙂. All the best to you both and thank you ao much for sharing you’re adventures 🙂

Thanks for all the articles you guys have done. Been following you both for quite a while. I pray for a Holy and Peaceful journey for your father Adam. May the Lord grant him the grace of peace and eternal life. And I pray you and all your family will be able to spend this time together and have no ‘Murphy Surprises’ like you get when on a boat and that it all goes smoothly for as long as possible. Peace be to all of you and hopefully one day we may see you back here on YT again.

I’m so sorry to hear this news. Prayers for your family. If you come back I’ll be here but you are where you should be. Enjoy this time with your dad as much as you can!! It wasn’t that long ago (a few years now) that we received a similar call and we were blessed to have 5 months in Trinidad with my wonderful father-in-law. 🤗💞🤗💞🤗💞

Hey Chief. I’m so, so sorry to hear about your Dad. As a fellow sandgroper who faced the same scenario – dream job overseas etc – I can relate. I made the decision to return indefinitely. It was my Dad you know. But it was not the right decision. Indefinite means having to work. Indefinite means sorting out a place of your own. Indefinite means all the golden handcuffs of life. It may mean more time living near your Dad but it’s not more quality time. If I had that time again I’d have done a couple of 3 month leaves of absence.

i hope you guys are doing well, and your dad is kicking cancer’s ass. Your articles has helped me get through a rough patch in my life because of me not taking care of my mental health. I’m grateful to get to see the other side of the world that i wouldn’t have through your lenses but take the time you need to, to enjoy the time you have with the ones you love. we will be here for when you get back.

Love you guys and so sorry to hear about your dad! Our thoughts & prayers and with you and your family! I’m so glad that you’re able to be home with family during this very difficult time! We know exactly how you’re feeling! We moved to Florida back in late ‘21. In early ‘22 my dad got sick. We traveled back & forth for 5months. Unfortunately, he passed that June. We’ve decided to move back home to be with family and help take care of my mom. Much love & prayers to you guys! ❤🙏🏻

😢 Sincere condolances. The thing about true friends is this… should we be parted by distance or time…. when we reunite… it’s as if we’ve never parted. Take care of your loved ones. Take care of each other. And we’ll be here, should you choose to return. If not, in the immortal words of William Shakespere: “It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved… at all.” You will be sorely missed. God Bless, godspeed, and may you and yours find peace. Thank you both for sharing your trials, tribulations and triumphs with the world. You are an inspiration to us all. Remain courageous. From Central Texas, USA. Ian ✌️❤️🚀🤠

I just want to add to the many voices here, and wish you all god speed. To thank you for your amazing articles of beautiful places as we traveled vicariously through the wonders of the internet. I’ve very recently got to the stage where I’ve been alive longer without my father, than with. It’s a very strange moment of realisation. We shall certainly be here when, if you return, but whatever you do, hold each other close as you’re an awesome couple. Never give up the wanderlust as the world is a wonderful place, even at crap times. Sending all the love from the island of Jersey 🇯🇪 CI. Xxx

Adam & Kiara wishing you and your family all the best, there is nothing any of us can say that will help during this difficult time but know that all your fans are out here supporting you, loving you and thinking about you. Do what is right for you and your family, I hope you return to your website one day and when you do we will all still be here waiting for you and welcoming you. Thank you so very much for sharing your lives with us and the amazing journey you have taken us on. I’m sure I speak for many when I say you have woken a dream and desire in me, that one day I may be able to go sail the world just like you. Take care, and if you need anything you only have to reach out.

My heart goes out to you and your family Adam. Thanks for everything. SMF was the website that sent me down the cruising rabbit hole 4-5 years ago. Now my spouse and I are sailing down to Mexico in November to live on our Pearson 37-2 for the next 3-?? years. You and Kiara and Milli will always be connected to us. Take care.

Heh guys. Always loved your clips & hopefully many more to come. We are a couple of Tasmanians propped aboard our own yacht currently parked in Stornoway. We will be coming ashore in Oban in September and if you haven’t made it back then and want /need anything doing regards Millie just yell. Cheers Col & Claire

My father got very sick, I won’t get into the specifics but it was terminal. The best thing I did was move to where he was located and live with him until the end. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made because I was able to share this time with him, cherish this time you have with him. It will be invaluable to you later in life. So good on you two for making this decision, it was a no brainer for certain. For me I hope you come back, I look forward to seeing you guys in the south pacific one day.

YouTube family are great but they’re no replacement for real family !! You guys have been a great saviour for so many especially through lockdown. Reach out if we can help in any way. Take care of yourselves and your loved ones. We look forward to seeing you when and if you are ready to make more content!!

WOW, that’s so sad. & Trust me, you will be missed, but hay, you have priority’s & I fully respect that. It’s tough being away from loved ones & even more so when someone falls ill. I feel for you both. I hope all goes well back home, (well, as well as it can be anyway). I truly hope to see you both back on Milly when the time is right. All the best ♥️. SV Kiwi Lady Opua Bay of islands New Zealand.

❤ Having spent a lot of time with my dad the weeks before he passed away in february I know you are doing the right thing. Like you said it’s not really anything to think about, you just have to go. Will be thinking of you guys and looking forward to your return to the airwaves when the time is right.

9 Fascinating Facts About the ‘Maltese Falcon,’ One of the World’s Most Iconic Sailing Yachts

A three-deck atrium, two master suites, two cinemas, and the innovative falconrig are just a few of the secrets of this highly technical yacht., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

Sailing Yacht Maltese Falcon

At the time of its 2006 delivery, the 289-foot Maltese Falcon held the title of the world’s largest sailing yacht—nearly stretching the length of a football field, with a 42-foot beam. The Falcon ’s first-place status has been eclipsed by more recent launches, including the 348-foot Black Pearl and Jeff Bezos’s 417-foot Koru . But the Maltese Falcon remains one of the most iconic boats on the water as well as one of the largest sailing yachts for charter via Burgess.

Commissioned by the late Tom Perkins—a pioneer of Silicon Valley’s venture capital industry who was briefly married to romance novelist Danielle Steel (his own novel, Sex and the Single Zillionaire, is still available on Amazon)—and built by Perini Navi, Maltese Falcon has won 18 design awards since its launch. Naval architecture was by Gerard Dijkstra, with the original design by Ken Freivokh.

The three-mast sailing yacht last year completed an interior, exterior, and engineering refit at Lusben shipyard. The series of aesthetic and functional improvements include the hull being repainted in Perini Blue and a new extendable passerelle that takes guests down to the water. The teak deck was also replaced, and interiors refurbished with lighter woods, cream panels, and new tapestries.

Here are nine cool facts you didn’t know about the Maltese Falcon .

The FalconRig

The innovative masts and sails, inspired by the 1960s DynaRig concept, were produced by U.K.-based Insensys. The FalconRig is based on three rotating and freestanding masts made from “weapons-grade” carbon fiber, capable of deploying up to 24,756 square feet of sail in six seconds (the average time it takes to tie a necktie) at the push of a button. The huge sail area is spread over 15 sails to greatly reduce the loads while delivering a potential top speed of 25 knots. Maltese Falcon carries a total of 25 sails, giving it 10 to spare. Despite its success, the technology has not been widely adopted, though Black Pearl comes close with its DynaRig system.

This is Where the Magic Happens

All this innovation was only possible with specialized technology, including sensors in the sails that measure loads, wind speeds, and tidal currents, specialized software that Perkins wrote to help crunch this data in nanoseconds and a centralized control center that does most of the sailing automatically. Perkins’s goal was to create a complex but very easy-to-handle sailing machine. He once boasted: “I can teach any sailor how to handle the yacht in five minutes.”

Two Cinemas

One of the yacht’s most unique features is the world’s largest outdoor cinema (above) projected onto the lower sail. Guests can watch from the flybridge or the lounging space at the bow of the sundeck. Since the refit, there is now an indoor cinema (below), with wood paneling and comfy sofas that deliver a Zen vibe.

Three-deck Atrium

Under Perkins’s stewardship, Maltese Falcon contained an incredible collection of modern art, which served as inspiration for the yacht’s “luxury machine” interior penned by Freivokh. It combined industrial chic with high tech, manifested in leather, glass, wood, and steel. The art may no longer be on board and the interior has been refurbished, but the three-deck atrium, with stairs spiraling around the main mast (below), remains a showstopping feature.

Six Years in Build

The hull was built on spec in 1989 by Perini Navi and sat for 10 years waiting for the right owner. When Perkins, who had spent a decade planning the vessel, green-lit the build process, it took from 2000 to 2006, or about twice the time of a typical custom superyacht because of its complexity. Perkins had amassed a fleet of vessels over a 25-year period that included the 141-foot Perini Navi Andromeda la Dea,  a 154-foot ketch of the same name, and the Herreshoff classic Mariette of 1915 . He also owned a restored classic yacht called Atlantide . But Maltese Falcon was Perkins’s opus. He wanted a high-tech, but easy-to-handle sailing machine. He once boasted: “I can teach any sailor how to handle the yacht in five minutes.”

Rotating Sunbed

Maltese Falcon is known for its large modern spaces, including an indoor/outdoor bar area where the glitterati have mingled on deck. Among the yacht’s many refit improvements is a new circular sunbed on the flybridge that rotates with the sun to deliver maximum tanning exposure, guest convenience, and a continuous stream of panoramic vistas.

The Bogart Connection

The name Maltese Falcon was inspired by the 1941 American film noir of the same name, directed by John Huston, that starred Humphrey Bogart and Peter Lorre. Many consider it the greatest detective movie ever made. The black bird, originally made in gold and encrusted with jewels, is also a symbol of extreme wealth. The emblem appears throughout the yacht, on the sails, the linen, and in the form of a bronze sculpture positioned by the indoor cinema.

Two Masters

Officially, there is only one full-beam master suite (top), with a large walk-in wardrobe, an adjoining gym, and his-and-hers bathrooms with a Jacuzzi bath and shower room. However, the private full-beam VIP (bottom) is a close runner up, which many consider a second primary. Facing the flybridge with access to the terrace and walkaround side decks, it has a new bed with a television that rises from the floor. There are an additional four double cabins on the lower deck, each with en suite facilities.

A Full Chest of Water Toys

It’s not surprising that a yacht renowned for being technologically advanced should hold a plethora of toys and other cool amenities. The onboard gym has a state-of-the-art MS Sculpt electric muscle stimulator for toning without breaking a sweat. In the water, there are eFoils, paddleboards, and jetsurfers. The two original Pascoe tenders remain, though Perkins took the DeepFlight Super Falcon personal submersible with him when he sold the yacht in 2009. It was the world’s first “winged submersible” built by Hawkes Ocean Technologies and was named in honor of Maltese Falcon . He later installed the sub aboard his motor yacht Dr No , a converted fisheries training ship, which he used to explore the Pacific Islands.
