Welcome to Great Orme Model Yacht Club

Based at the West Shore Boating Lake, Llandudno.

We are a fun group aimed at meeting new friends interested in model yacht racing, model yachts and scale boats; and are affiliated to the Model Yacht Association (MYA), the UK governing body for the sport.

We primarily race DragonFlite 95's (DF95), but other classes will be included when sufficient numbers are present, and compete under the rules of the appropriate association conducting that particular aspect of model boating or specific club sailing instructions.

If you are interested in joining our club, there is a membership form here: https://gomyc.club/files/view/GOMYC_membership_form.doc (downloads or opens the membership form, depending on your web browser)

Weymouth & Portland Model Boat Club

We are the model boat club based in Weymouth  in West Dorset, UK.

The clubs objectives are to:

  • Promote the hobby of model boat building and sailing for sail, electric and steam models.
  • Organise meetings and sailing events
  • Maintain 3 sailing waters in West Dorset. Radipole, Mangerton and Symondsbury.
  • Attend local shows with static and sailing displays.
  • Sailing events are organised from Easter to the end of September.

We have a club social meeting on a monthly basis for discussion and presentations throughout the year.

model yacht clubs uk

Members design, build and operate a wide range of models for sail, electric and steam power.

We have no restrictions other than we cannot use internal combustion engines on our sailing waters.  Other considerations on model size are that there is limited depth of water at all lakes, so usually models do not draw more than about 30-50cm.

Help and advice is always available from our friendly bunch. Several members have joined over the last couple of years with little experience and soon become confident at sailing and building.

Some members find it hard to stop building new models!

Our membership covers mainly West Dorset and South Somerset. If you are interested in finding out more about this friendly club please use the Contact Form and we will be pleased to get back to you.

You can also find our latest news on facebook…. but you will need to login to facebook..

The club meets on the first Wednesday of every month (except January) at: St Francis of Assisi, Merredin Close,Weymouth DT3 6S

The meeting begins at 7:00, first 20 minutes or so for tea and biscuit. Usually club business and organisation of sailing dates is discussed. Although occasionally bring & buys, talks or presentations will take place.

Sailing Venues:

Radipole Lake:

The club has arrangements with the council to use this lake which is situated in central Weymouth. Sailing of model boats takes place south of the Swannery bridge. Usually sailing is on the second and fourth Sunday of each month although other club events may conflict so check the calendar for proposed dates.

In the summer 2 Wednesday evenings are also used for sailing. There is a car park adjacent to the lake and if you don’t mind carrying your boat a little further parking in the south corner of the large Swannery carpark north of the Swannery bridge is a little cheaper.

Please use the contact form if you are interested in sailing at Radipole.

Club Contact – Mike Greenham

Please Note……

Sailing at Radipole is now suspended until further notice because of a bloom of algae…

Mangerton Mill:

We visit this pond at the invitation of the Mill’s owner. Situated ~2.5miles north of Bridport near the village of Bradpole, follow signs off the Beaminster road.

There are usually 14 sailing days there a year. This is a pleasant rural location in the Manger valley. The mill is now run as a tourist attraction and has a tea room, selction of art & craft shops and toilets.

The venue is the ideal venue for casual sailing. On our allocated days we have all day to sail, ususally starting from about 10:00am ( all depending on the weather!). The venue’s location and facilities provide enough interest for a family day out.

Club Contact – Charles Hallsworth

Sailing Dates – 2024

MAR 31 & APR 1 – EASTER HOLIDAY

MAY 5 & 6 – MAY HOLIDAY

MAY 26 & 27 – SPRING HOLIDAY

JUNE 9 – RNLI Day

AUG 25 & 26 – LATE SUMMER HOLIDAY

Symondsbury:

Club sailing days are arranged here every Wednesday, generally from mid March to the end of October – weather dependent!

Access to the pond is good as cars can be taken near to the lake. However the site should be avoided after heavy or sustained rain to avoid tearing up the grass. Users must ensure that the gate to the site is closed and secure as the farmer does have livestock in the field. This venue does have toilets.

Wednesday sailing at Symondsbury has started for the year! Weather permitting.

If you wish to find out more about taking part in model boat building or sailing then come along to a club meeting or find us at either Mangerton Mill or Radipole lake on our scheduled sailing dates.

See our venues page to find us and calender page for when. We also attend some local exhibitions where you can talk to members.

We are open to new members. Please contact our Membership Secretary who can supply a welcome pack and membership form.

Please use the Contact Form to email us.

The Model Yachting Association Great Britain

There are many aspects to what makes a radio or free sailor but the MYA is primarily of interest to those who wish to race them, and it doesn’t matter whether you are a mid week skipper who sails locally with your mates or a top end competitor who spends their time planning the next international event, the one thing in common is that if there is another boat on the water there will be a race, and that’s what we do, whether for fun, for the social aspect or for the competition its all racing.

Model Yachting

The term Model Yachting is based on the heritage and traditions of our sport which go back over 200 years, however the boats we sail are in most instances not models or scale versions of full sized boats but specifically design purpose built yachts for racing, nowadays primarily with radio controls but also for free sailing.

Whether designed on the kitchen table or the latest computer design package, a lot of time, energy and enjoyment goes in to making a modern model yacht.

How we do it

Most racing is done via a club structure, and to be a member of the MYA you have to be a member of a recognised club.   This club will have a structure that provides organised and structured racing, typically to the World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS); with occasional variations to take into account local requirements. The newcomer will soon pick up the basics of how a race takes place.

Radio Sailing will be around a series of buoys and a race will last between 15 and 20 minutes with a series of these in a days racing. This is probably the biggest difference between full size and what we do, instead of 2 or 3 races in a day, we will have 10 to 15 in a day, with 10-15 starts, 10-15 1st beats and 10-15 close finishes!

Free Sailing requires a different lake with access required all the way round and is the core form which the modern sport has evolved, this is a series of windward legs and downwind legs where every boat races against each other and the wins against other boats are added together to find the overall winner, although less obviously tactical, its challenges are still many with boat trim a great skill which takes time to understand and achieve consistently.

Like many sports; Golf, Motorsport or even full size Sailing the first time you participate it can seem “odd” but most people who experience radio or free sail cannot wait for the next time, and if the “bug” gets you it can lead to many hours of enjoyment across the country.

Most clubs will organise a club league or competition and for those with more time there are races organised between local clubs or districts. For the keener skipper there are national and international events with the associated social aspect!

Who does it

The sport has champions in their 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s & 70’s, in fact we have members in an age range from 7 to 97 with classes, races and series to suit all. It is a great way of making friends getting some exercise and removing the stresses of life.

Give it a Go

Whether you are an ex Olympian, World Champion, Full Size Sailor or just like the idea of having a go, there will be something for you in Radio or Free Sailing. Why not look through the MYA clubs page and find a club close to you.

We welcome any sort of model boat and we hope that when you have seen the wide range of models we sail we will enhance your knowledge and understanding of model boating with all its diversities and variations.

Many of our members will build their own models either from scratch or from kits but it is increasingly popular for members to buy their models as "ready to run". Whichever, we are pleased to see you!

You may have a model that's been languishing in your attic for years and if you would like to resurrect it and see it on the water we are pleased to help.
