Harriot II Riverboat (Montgomery) Travel Guide

Amidst Montgomery’s rich tapestry of history and culture, the Harriott II Riverboat stands as a proud reminder of the city’s ties to the Alabama River.

Whether you’re a Montgomery native or a tourist eager to experience Southern hospitality at its finest, a cruise on the Harriott II is an experience you won’t want to miss. This guide delves into the magic of the Harriott II, offering insights and tips for a memorable voyage.

  • Introduction to the Harriott II Riverboat

The Harriott II Riverboat, anchored at Montgomery’s Riverfront Park, is a majestic 19th-century riverboat replica. With its gleaming white facade, grand paddlewheel, and red accents, it’s a nostalgic throwback to the days when steamboats ruled the rivers.

  • A Glimpse into History

While the Harriott II itself is a modern construction, Montgomery has a longstanding riverboat history. The original Harriott, for which Harriott II is named, operated in the 1820s, transporting cotton, goods, and passengers along the Alabama River. Today’s riverboat is a tribute to this storied past, ensuring that Montgomery’s riverboat legacy continues to thrive.

  • Cruising Options

The Harriott II offers a range of cruising experiences tailored to different tastes:

a. Scenic Cruises: Perfect for those looking to relax and enjoy the Alabama River’s tranquil beauty. These cruises often come with insightful narrations about Montgomery’s history and its relationship with the river.

b. Dinner Cruises: A gourmet experience, these cruises feature a delicious spread of Southern dishes, live music, and dancing.

c. Themed Nights: From jazz nights to blues cruises, the Harriott II frequently hosts themed evenings, allowing guests to immerse themselves in rich musical traditions.

d. Private Charters: For special occasions, the riverboat can be privately chartered, offering a personalized experience for guests.

  • Amenities Onboard

Spread over three levels, the Harriott II boasts a range of amenities:

a. The Saloon Deck: Featuring a full-service bar, concessions, and restrooms.

b. The Jubilee Deck: This is where you’ll find the dance floor, band stage, and another full-service bar.

c. The Patriot Deck: Perfect for taking in panoramic river views, it offers open-air seating and a bird’s-eye view of the paddlewheel in action.

  • What to Expect Onboard

A cruise on the Harriott II is more than just a ride; it’s an experience. Guests can expect:

a. Engaging Entertainment: From live bands to DJs, there’s always something to keep guests entertained.

b. Delicious Southern Cuisine: Depending on the cruise, guests might enjoy a buffet dinner, snacks, or themed meals.

c. A Friendly Crew: Known for their Southern hospitality, the crew is always on hand to ensure guests have a memorable experience.

  • Tips for Travelers

a. Reservations: Popular cruises, especially themed or dinner cruises, can fill up quickly. It’s advisable to book in advance.

b. Attire: While daytime cruises are generally casual, evening cruises, especially those with dinner and dancing, might have a dressier code.

c. Weather: Given the Patriot Deck’s open nature, it’s a good idea to check the weather forecast and dress accordingly.

  • Nearby Attractions

The Harriott II docks at Riverfront Park, making it easy for guests to explore surrounding attractions:

a. Riverwalk: A scenic trail ideal for walking or jogging with picturesque views of the Alabama River.

b. Montgomery Biscuits Baseball: If you’re lucky, you might catch a game at the nearby Riverwalk Stadium.

c. Amphitheater: Located right in Riverfront Park, the amphitheater hosts a range of concerts, festivals, and events throughout the year.

  • Reviews and Testimonials

Guests frequently highlight the Harriott II’s romantic ambiance, making it a popular choice for anniversaries and date nights. The combination of southern food, soulful music, and the gentle sway of the riverboat creates a magical experience cherished by many.

  • Accessibility and Facilities

The Harriott II is equipped to accommodate guests with disabilities. However, it’s always a good idea to check in advance regarding specific needs.

Montgomery’s Harriott II Riverboat is more than just a mode of transportation; it’s a voyage through time. It’s an ode to the bygone era of grand riverboats, of sultry Southern nights filled with music, laughter, and the gentle murmur of the Alabama River. Whether you’re a history buff, a music enthusiast, or someone simply seeking a unique experience, the Harriott II promises a journey you’ll cherish long after you’ve disembarked.

Downtown Montgomery hosts triple event Saturday with riverboat tours, dining and classic cars

montgomery riverboat tickets

The Harriott II Riverboat has a new look to show off, and tours to explore it are being offered for free as part of a triple downtown Montgomery event Saturday from 4-8 p.m.

At the same time, downtown dining is happening on Commerce Street, and a car show is taking place at the Union Station Train Shed.

No need to pick between them. You can try all three.

"Ideally, you can come down, grab something to eat, go check out the car show, go check out the river boat, and just have a nice evening downtown where you can socially distance safely in an outside open-air environment," said Jamie Gonzalez, special events manager for Montgomery.

Riverboat tour

It's not quite time to take a trip along the Alabama River on the Harriott II, but the city's riverboat is ready when those are allowed again.

"The Harriott II has been completely redone on the inside," Gonzalez said. "(The tour) is for people to come and see all the new improvements we've made."

There's no charge to participate in the tour, and no registration is required. Gonzalez said they're just limiting the number of guests that can go aboard at the same time.

This will be a dockside event at Riverfront Park, and Gonzalez said the riverboat's bar will be open.

"You can hang out on the boat, grab a drink and listen to some music," Gonzalez said.

To get to the Harriott II, guests should enter Riverfront Park through the tunnel on Commerce Street.

Commerce Street Dining

Gonzalez said Commerce Street will be closed between Bibb and Tallapoosa streets, an area next to The Alley Station that has restaurants on both sides of the street.

"We're going to put out tables and chairs," Gonzalez said. "This is to encourage the residents of Montgomery and our surrounding areas to come and support our downtown restaurants. All the tables will be spread out so we can maintain 6 foot social distancing. You can dine on some of the great food that we have downtown."

Gonzalez said one way guests can participate is to order food to go from one of the restaurants and bring it to a table.

"Some of the restaurants that are participating will be coming around with menus and serving that way," Gonzalez said. Prices will vary according to the restaurants.

Live music, arranged by DBA Montgomery, will come from Montgomery singer Destiny Turner. Along with her solo work, Turner performs regularly with the band Souled Out Groove.

"I'm hoping to give hardworking people something to look forward to for the weekend," said Turner, who plans to keep the show upbeat so maybe people can dance. She'll also be including two or three of her original songs.

"We're just trying to create additional space for you to come downtown and enjoy the downtown restaurants," Gonzalez said.

Union Station Car Show

Also from 4-8 p.m., there's a car show happening in the Union Station Train Shed.

"There are going to be some door prizes," Gonzalez said. "It's more of a cruise in. There's no registration or anything like that. You can come on down to the train station, bring your classic cars, and hang out and look at all the different cars. It's something fun to do on a Saturday afternoon and evening."

Kalen DeBoer contract details: Buyout, bonuses and perks for new Alabama coach

  • Published: Mar. 18, 2024, 6:55 p.m.

Kalen DeBoer will get a monthly phone stipend and access to a private jet in Tuscaloosa. Such is life for an Alabama head football coach.

DeBoer has been on the job for two months, hitting the recruiting trail and starting spring practice. However, on Monday, Nick Saban’s successor had his contract accepted by the UA System board of trustee’s compensation committee.

Through public records requests, outlets, including AL.com, confirmed DeBoer’s eight-year, $87 million agreement with the university.

DeBoer’s contract will run through Dec. 31, 2031. Compensation will start at $10 million annually and increase by $250,000, topping at $11.75 million in his final season. By comparison, Saban’s first coaching contract with the Tide in 2007 was for eight years and $32 million.

Should DeBoer be fired “without cause,” he will earn 90 percent of his remaining deal in monthly installments through the end of his contract term. If DeBoer terminates the contract, Alabama is owed a $5 million buyout in 2024, $4 million in 2025 and $3 million in 2026. From 2027-31, there is no payment owed from DeBoer to the school.

Some perks come with being the head football coach of the Crimson Tide and here’s some of what DeBoer and agent Jimmy Sexton negotiated for:

  • DeBoer will be paid a bonus of $75,000 if Alabama reaches a Southeastern Conference championship game. That will boost to $125,000 if UA wins.
  • A berth in the impending 12-team College Football Playoff will lead to a $150,000 bonus, scaling to $250,000 for a quarterfinals appearance, $400,000 for a semifinals run, $600,000 for making the national title game and $875,000 should Alabama win it all.
  • Alabama promises to give DeBoer a minimum assistant salary pool of at least $9.17 million for 10 on-field assistants. The university approved 11 contracts today for DeBoer coaches, but special teams coordinator Jay Nunez is not expected to have an on-the-field role.
  • DeBoer is in line for $50,000 if Alabana’s football team has a graduation rate in the top half of the SEC and $100,000 if it falls in the top four.
  • If DeBoer is named coach Southeastern Conference coach of the year by his counterparts he will be awarded $25,000. If DeBoer wins a national coach of the year award — he was recognized by the Associated Press and Sporting News last year — he gets an added $50,000.
  • DeBoer has a year automobile allowance of $16,800. Like other Alabama head coaches, DeBoer will have a monthly cell phone stipend of $225.
  • DeBoer will have a skybox in Bryant-Denny Stadium for each Alabama home game with parking passes and 15 tickets. For road games, DeBoer’s “spouse and dependents” can travel at no cost to DeBoer.
  • UA will pay DeBoer’s monthly membership to North River Yacht Club or another golf and country club in Tuscaloosa County. However, DeBoer will have to pay for his own drinks and food.
  • DeBoer will have access to a “non-commercial airline airplane” up to 30 hours of flight time each season for personal use. The hours do not roll over.
