Sixth Princess 30M yacht delivered and named Princess Three

The 30.45 metre motor yacht Princess Three has been delivered, her builder Princess Yachts has confirmed.

Hull number six in the yard’s Princess 30M series, she boasts naval architecture and exterior design by long-term collaborator Bernard Olesinski .

Accommodation on board Princess Three is for up to ten guests split between five cabins, including a main-deck master suite . Meanwhile, her crew quarters allow for a staff of up to five people.

Key features include a spacious superyacht sundeck , which has been fitted with the optional spa pool, making this area ideal for al fresco relaxation. Her interior décor is described by the yard as “timeless and contemporary, offering relaxed, yet sophisticated living”.

Built from a GRP hull and superstructure, Princess Three features a beam of 7.05 metres and a maximum draught of 2.06 metres. Power comes from a pair of 1,900hp Caterpillar C32 ACERT diesel engines, which allow for a top speed of 22 knots, as the Princess team confirmed on sea trials shortly after her December launch.

Other projects currently under development at Princess Yachts include the new 24.66 metre Princess S78 sportsbridge series, which made its public debut earlier this week at the 2018 Düsseldorf International Boat Show. The yard adds that the first ten hulls have already been sold and it is on course to break its sales record for the show.

Beautiful yacht-very clean and comfortable! Food was exceptional and outstanding. Every meal was beautifully presented, delicious and healthy. Each breakfast, snack, lunch, dinner and cocktail was an exquisite dining experience. The fact that the table setting was also a surprise for every meal elevated each meal time. Nicole´s meals are Michelin quality and we were all extremely impressed! The entire crew was absolutely outstanding. We loved every moment of our trip! They were all experienced, attentive, informative, fun and entertaining! It was a fabulous experience! The weather precluded us from doing many of the things we would have liked to do but we did enjoy the tropical storm that we experienced one evening. The crew navigated it calmly and effectively! -Sasha W.

Simeon, Jason, Kim, Robert, Lucie Thank you so much for making Buck´s 60th birthday celebration so special. The service, and hospitality were 2nd to none. All of the meals and drinks were amazing! Thanks to the whole crew for putting up with all of the overserved late night partiers. Cheers Mo and Buck, Lauren and Christina, Lexi and Ben, Jill & Kyle And to the broker: How was your overall experience? We had a great time. Did the crew live up to your expectations? Yes we really enjoyed all of them. They were very accommodating and fun! How would you describe the food and drinks? Excellent excellent excellent! A lot of food for sure. We aren’t 3 big meals a day. Everything was great and Kim and Lucy were so interesting to talk with. We still want some of the recipes from Kim! Were you involved in planning the itinerary? I think the weather pretty much determined where we could go. What did you like most about your charter? Easiness of each day, not having a plan of go, go, go. Just very relaxing. Can you give me any hints as to how I can provide my clients with an even better experience? Hmmm it was pretty perfect! Is there anything in particular you wish you had known in advance? The Mckernans

Wow, where to start with Mariah Princess!! We had an incredible trip. The boat itself is beautiful. The master bedroom cabin was very spacious and offered Mike and I double sinks and a walk-in closet…pretty spectacular for boat living. The other bedrooms were perfectly sized for our kids and nephew. We loved hanging out on the back of the boat. Aside from socializing around the great teak dining table, there were numerous cozy sofas and loungers back there to enjoy the sun. The boat had a fantastic flybridge area too which was a great spot to take in the views as we sailed. It also had an awesome hot tub! The tender was a fabulous boat too. But the best part about Mariah Princess was definitely the crew!!! They went above and beyond to make sure our trip was memorable. Capt Kevin made sure to communicate our plans each evening and was very approachable and informative. He was always willing to help and accommodate our desires on the trip. He even took my son out on the tender for boat driving lessons (Peyton has his boating license). His first mate, Julio, was the nicest guy! He was the first to jump up and agree to take my kid´s wakeboarding, snorkeling, or tubing. He also did a hike with Mike and me in St Thomas. Simply an awesome guy! Our chef, Nicole, made dish after dish of amazing food, with a smile!! We ate so much and loved it all. She was super accommodating to my daughter too, who can be really picky. And finally, Cat….our stew. She was sincerely the best we could have asked for! She was kind, wonderful with my kids, knowledgeable, helpful, funny, and made everything about this trip better. She, along, with Julio, taught my kids how to wakeboard. Their patience and encouragement pushed my kids to success out there. It was awesome. She also did a one-hour morning yoga session for the girls one day which was out of this world. My daughter cried as we left the boat and mainly to be leaving Cat! As you can tell, we loved it! The change in boats was meant to be. If we had to make any recommendations for improvement, there aren’t many….and these suggestions are very minor. Maybe have some round noodles on board and possibly a large inflatable for more than one person to chill out on. (These are coming! note by crew)

February 2022

Cheers to the Mariah Princess Team for putting together our gorgeous sailing adventure in the USVI... in less than one week! When you are ready to Sail... Go! Go! Go! .. especially during this difficult time of Covid and travel restrictions, The Mariah Princess was absolutely pristine about protocol and we joyfully and safely met the superb Mariah Crew in St. Thomas. Captain Kevin Gentles and his Crew, immediately set the tone for fun with their high spirited enthusiasm, professionalism and character! Their work ethic shining brightly anticipating our every need!!! The boat is absolutely gorgeous... even more beautiful than the photographs. What a Lady she is. I and my friends have sailed a lot in our lifetime and the Mariah did not disappoint. Captain Kevin took us on many a great sail! He and 1st Mate Nick, found the most delightful places to swim, snorkel, kayak. Nick had us hiking, paddle boarding... always watching over us to make sure we were safe and having a great time. Our Marvelous Steward; CAT.... was always there with a towel, a drink, and her very witty personality. We adored her! Her table settings were highly creative and elegant. She was highly professional and a joy to be around. Chef KATE.... fed us with the most sumptuous meals. Many of us have dietary issues, which didn´t faze her one bit. We were all completely well fed and happy!! Her cheerful personality and love of cooking was gratefully appreciated. The only disappointment was the hot tub was not working. In all fairness, because I chartered her so quickly, there wasn´t enough time to get it fixed. Everything else was perfection. I look forward to chartering her again and again. Thank you Mariah Team for a terrific vacation! All pictures © Janie Joseland Bennett Sarah

Feeling the love? Seas the day and time travel to yesteryear with future-forward Princess Cruises , when the original cast of TV’s iconic The Love Boat show—which aired for a decade on ABC; now streaming on Paramount Plus , Apple TV+ and other channels—sets sail from New York City on a round-trip voyage that anchors at picturesque ports in New England and Canada aboard the Enchanted Princess, August 31 - September 7, 2024 .

Original cast of The Love Boat.

This romance-themed rendezvous reunites actors Jill Whelan (whose role as Vicki Stubing, the ship captain’s daughter, was delightful), Bernie Kopell (as Doc), Fred Grandy (as purser Gopher) and Ted Lange (as bartender Isaac). They will interact with passengers at multiple events: a jubilant sail-away; a meet-and-greet, photo-and-autograph session; guests’ activities replete with prizes; and Q&A gatherings. There will also be a symbolic renewal of passengers’ wedding vows, officiated by the cast, with commemorative certificates.

Princess Cruises arranges wedding vow renewals.

In addition, classic comedy-drama episodes of The Love Boat will be shown at its Movies Under The Stars program outdoors on a gargantuan screen. The Love Boat trivia contests will be cheered. And cocktails to complement The Love Boat vibe will be toasted. Ezra Freeman, Princess Cruises’ real-life bartender who starred on The Real Love Boat —a reality-dating series that premiered on CBS in 2022; now streaming on Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime —will join this spirited celebration.

The Love Boat: A Top Travel Influencer

This popular series (from the 1970s and ‘80s) introduced millions of American TV viewers to cruising, propelling the rise of passenger ships by showcasing life on the high seas as a fun, festive, fashionable, family-friendly and romantic vacation choice. It transformed travel horizons. Episodes spotlit a lively array of well-known guest-star celebrities. Story lines varied, but plots always concluded happily, further solidifying its audience draw. Now in worldwide syndication, reaching more than 90 countries, original The Love Boat episodes have been translated into more than 30 languages.

Ship-Shape Interview: Jill Whelan

Actor Jill Whelan, who is now a Celebrations Ambassador for Princess Cruises, and I talked about her passion for sailing.

Laura Manske: Two years ago, Princess Cruises orchestrated its first The Love Boat theme reunion, which sailed the Mexican Riviera. There continues to be strong sentimentality for its original cast.

Jill Whelan: Anytime I get together with my cast mates, it’s like coming home because we’re family. I truly mean that. This will be our second theme cruise since 2022. We were all touched and overwhelmed by the incredible response from guests. Nostalgia for the show still gets people excited. Princess was the ocean-going co-star of The Love Boat. That is unique.

Manske: Your key anticipated moments with passengers ahead?

Whelan: Well, certainly our cast reunion in the Princess Theater, when we will share our favorite memories, laugh a lot and take questions from the audience. The renewal of vows we host is also incredibly sweet. So many couples renew their love for one another on The Love Boat . We get to play a part in their special day.

Jill Whelan (as Vicki Stubing) with the late Gavin MacLeod (as Captain Stubing), her TV dad.

Manske: You starred on The Love Boat aboard the Pacific Princess from the age of 11 onward.

Whelan: I was so young. Gavin MacLeod welcomed me with open arms and such warmth and love, as I was playing his daughter. Remember, I was coming into an already hit show and I was the youngest. So romance wasn’t a cornerstone of my storyline just yet. But Gavin made me feel at ease, as did all of the cast members. I remember trying to take it all in, learn from everyone who came on set and appreciate the places we visited on our Princess cruises.

Manske: How did the show influence your views about romantic love as a teen growing up with this series.

Whelan: I did have my first kiss on The Love Boat . Let’s just say it wasn’t as magical as I’d hoped. As Gavin always said: ‘The show gave people something to dream about.’ I did fall in love with the romance of the sea and connecting with people on vacation. I guess as any teenager would, I did have fantasies about falling in love and sailing off into the sunset. And that did happen for me when I met my husband, Jeff, in 2016. We can’t cruise enough these days. We absolutely love it!

Manske: Share something, perhaps surprising, that brings you joy.

Whelan: Many of the Princess ships’ horns play The Love Boat theme song. I hear people singing the theme song when I’m onboard—and it makes me smile.

Enchanted Princess.

The 3,660-passenger Enchanted Princess ’s round-trip reunion itinerary from New York City includes days in Newport, Rhode Island; Boston; Rockland, Maine; Saint John, Canada (for the Bay of Fundy); and Halifax, Canada.

The Love Boat reunion trip embarks and disembarks in New York City.

What yachting industry insiders have to say about Jeff Bezos' superyacht

  • Jeff Bezos' yacht , which reportedly cost $500 million to build, completed its first year at sea.
  • The superyacht, Koru, was a frequent topic of conversation at the Palm Beach boat show.
  • Here's what industry insiders think about the vessel.

Insider Today

It's been just about a year since Koru, Jeff Bezos ' $500 million megayacht, set sail from the Oceanco shipyard in the Netherlands, capturing the attention of yachting insiders and land dwellers alike.

Even after her first season at sea, the 127-meter ship is still one of the most talked about vessels among those in the know — and not just for the busty figurehead on its prow, which many have wrongly speculated is based on Bezos's fiancée . Koru was a hot topic at the annual Palm Beach International Boat Show, where the yachts of other billionaires were on display for sale or charter.

The overwhelming response from those Business Insider spoke to was awe, with many praising her unique design, commenting on her immense size, or remarking that they'd been lucky enough to see her up close.

"It's absolutely beautiful," said Federico Rossi, the COO of luxury yachtbuilder Rossinavi.

Still, due to the small size of the industry — and the fact that privacy is paramount in the yachting community — even those who complimented Koru mostly did not want to go on record in order to protect professional relationships.

"That thing's amazing," one such superyacht expert told BI. "It's very well done in terms of craftsmanship."

Unlike many other megayachts, Koru, which media billionaire Barry Diller's Eos inspired, is designed as a sailing yacht. That bucks the current trend of more severe-looking explorer boats — though Koru's 75-meter support vessel Abeona is of a more typical style,

"I heard back in 2018 or something that somebody had ordered a classic sailing yacht," the superyacht expert also told BI. "You order 125 meters, that's not really going to be classic. But it is. I think it's pretty cool."

Like most other megayachts, Koru is powered by her engines, which are reportedly innovative in their use of a kinetic energy recovery system. Industry experts, therefore, pointed out that her sails are more for looks than anything else — but that still works in her favor, with many praising her overall aesthetic appeal.

Related stories

"It's stunning," added a captain who has worked on several megayachts. He said he'd seen Koru in St. Barts, a favorite spot of Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez , over the holidays.

"There are definitely uglier boats out there," one yacht architect said. "It's not like it's shaped like his rocket," he jokily added, referring to the phallic design of Blue Origin's New Shephard .

Some, though, think the yacht is a bit excessive — which is saying something in a world where bigger is better and $250 million is a normal amount to spend.

"That's over the top. That's an insanely ridiculous boat," a longtime broker who favors discretion said. It's a "whole big show."

And the expert who praised the yacht's craftsmanship balanced his admiring comments by saying Koru's liberal use of teak — a wood traditionally used for yacht decks — was "bizarre."

The material has gained a bad reputation in the industry in recent years, as it typically comes from Myanmar, a country with a checkered human rights record. Plus, it takes a long time to grow, leading to deforestation.

Many shipyards have now turned to alternatives, like bamboo or plantation-grown teak, in their pushes toward sustainability. Bezos' team did not respond to BI's question about the origin of the deck's wood.

Teak or not, the yachting industry isn't generally known for being all that environmentally friendly — or indeed lowkey, so many who BI talked to didn't buy into the idea that Koru is "too much."

"If this is genuinely Jeff's dream come true, then great," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage Fraser Yachts, said. "I'm genuinely happy for him, and I'm happy for the people who got the opportunity to have employment to work on that."

And Bezos, of course, isn't the only billionaire with a stunning yacht . Billionaires like Jerry Jones and Bernard Arnault have also, at times, turned heads with their boats.

Most recently, insiders have tied Mark Zuckerberg to a 118-meter ship named Launchpad . It's the latest superyacht to capture the yachting world's attention.

So, as she sets sail for her debut summer season, Launchpad may take Koru's place as the main yacht on everyone's radar this year.

With Charles and Catherine Sidelined, It’s Camilla’s Time to Shine

The woman whose very existence once seemed to threaten the royal family’s stability has emerged as a stabilizing force during a major health crisis.

  • Share full article

King Charles III and Queen Camilla walk ahead of a procession of family members.

By Mark Landler and Megan Specia

Reporting from London

In the last few weeks, as illness has sidelined two of Britain’s most visible royal figures, Catherine, Princess of Wales, and King Charles III, one member of the family’s frontbench has stepped into the vacuum: Queen Camilla.

Last week, she traveled to the Isle of Man to deliver a speech on Charles’s behalf and met with public officials and community groups. She then flew to Northern Ireland, where she visited a bakery and butcher shop, attended a literary event and accepted salutes at a military parade.

Camilla, 76, smiled for the photographers, joking on Thursday that a camera-friendly toddler who upstaged her visit to the butcher shop was a “natural.” She betrayed neither the strain of taking care of a cancer-stricken husband, nor that a day later Catherine would announce that she, too, had been diagnosed with cancer .

It is the kind of twist of fate that royal watchers savor: Camilla, the woman whose very existence once seemed to threaten the stability of the royal family, has emerged as a stabilizing force during a major royal health crisis. At times recently, it has felt as though she was carrying the entire House of Windsor on her shoulders.

“This is a vulnerable time for the royal family, where their human frailties are fully on display,” said Arianne J. Chernock, an associate professor of history at Boston University and an expert on the modern British monarchy. “Camilla’s own background and training can help her in these circumstances.”

With her husband canceling public engagements while he undergoes treatment, and with Catherine out for the foreseeable future for chemotherapy, Camilla has taken on high-profile duties. Her trip to Northern Ireland, scheduled before the king became ill, thrust her onto diplomatically delicate terrain, given the territory’s legacy of sectarian violence and its politically fragile government. By all accounts, she performed well.

Camilla is not the only senior royal picking up the load while Charles and Catherine are ill. Princess Anne, the king’s sister, has kept up her typically packed diary of royal events. Catherine’s husband, Prince William, hopes to return to full-time duties after the Easter holiday, and Charles has continued to meet foreign leaders and hold his weekly session with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

But nobody has been a more conspicuous stand-in than Camilla. At the Commonwealth Day service in Westminster Abbey this month, she led the royal family along with William. Speaking on the Isle of Man, she said, “My husband is so sorry that he cannot be with us on this extremely special occasion, but he has sent me here armed with a copy of his speech to read out on his behalf.”

Her brisk, no-nonsense style — so tempting for comedians like Tracey Ullman to send up — has helped steady a family thrown badly off balance. She reassures people that the king is doing well and tries to project an air of normalcy. When a mother held up her baby, Louis, Camilla replied that she had a grandson Louis, who she said was “quite a handful.” It was a leavening contrast to Catherine, who spoke in her video announcement about the anguish of telling Louis and her other two children that she was sick.

Even before the recent spate of illness, the royal family’s ranks had been depleted by the deaths of Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Philip; the bitter departure of Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan; and the exile of Prince Andrew over his links to Jeffrey Epstein, the sexual offender. That had increased the burden on Camilla, who assumed the title of queen consort in 2022, upon Elizabeth’s death.

Earlier this month, Camilla took a week off to spend time with her husband and family, which unsettled some royal watchers, given the family’s staffing shortage. But she threw herself quickly back into her duties.

Camilla’s emergence does not solve what has become an acute problem for the royal family. She carried out 233 engagements last year, according to a tally by The Daily Telegraph, while Charles carried out 425. But both are in their 70s, and the younger generation is not picking up the slack. Even before Catherine’s illness, she and William did fewer royal events, citing their young family.

Some experts said they expected the royal family to make more use of social media to amplify their in-person appearances. The family’s Instagram account has more than 13 million followers and its account on X well over five million. But the downside of social media became clear during Catherine’s prolonged hospitalization and convalescence, when it exploded with rumors and conspiracy theories.

“They’re going to have to change what they do,” said Peter Hunt, a former royal correspondent for the BBC. “In the absence of William and Kate, they don’t have the manpower. They are not going to be able to deliver as they once did.”

For Camilla, this latest iteration is yet another twist in her complex relationship with the public — one that has settled into, if not affection, then acceptance. In a poll of British adults by the market research firm YouGov last year, Camilla had an approval rating of 41 percent. That is higher than Harry, at 27 percent, but below Charles, at 51 percent, Catherine, at 63 percent, and William, at 68 percent.

To royal historians, last year’s coronation was the capstone of years of image rehabilitation by Charles and Camilla, who became romantically involved when she was known as Camilla Parker-Bowles. She had shouldered much of the blame for the failure of his first marriage, to Princess Diana, who died in a car crash in 1997. London’s tabloids vilified Camilla, splashing intimate details about the couple’s personal lives on their front pages.

But in the years since Charles and Camilla were married in 2005 in an understated civil ceremony, they have worked steadily to rebuild their images. Camilla became an active, dutiful participant in royal life. Nothing did more to cement her status than when the queen, shortly before her death, laid out a road map for Camilla to become queen consort , putting to rest years of uncertainty and speculation over her status.

In hindsight, royal watchers say, Elizabeth’s blessing may have been as much about ensuring a smooth transition in the monarchy after her reign as it was a reward to Charles and Camilla for their improved public images.

“Not that Elizabeth could foresee the series of challenges that the royal family has encountered this past year, but Elizabeth recognized that the monarchy is never just about the monarch, it’s about the family on the throne,” Professor Chernock of Boston University said. “Now is Camilla’s moment.”

Friends of the sisters described it as appearing “mean” that they “aren’t being used at all”, even though they’ve made it clear “they want to be of service”, according to the Daily Beast .

“They have done nothing wrong and they shouldn’t be visited with the sins of their father,” a source said, referencing Prince Andrew’s fall from grace and exit from public duties over his ties to Jeffrey Epstein.

“They are very upset to have been ignored by the king as they feel they have a lot to offer, but ultimately not surprised. They are sanguine about it.”

The royal family is currently dealing with the double blow of the Princess of Wales and King Charles’ respective cancer diagnosis and subsequent retreat from the spotlight while they both undergo treatment.

With Prince William reducing his workload in order to care for his wife – coupled with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s 2020 royal exit – the monarchy is now being represented by a skeleton staff which includes just Queen Camilla, Princess Anne, Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh.

It also means the younger generation of royals is severely under-represented, prompting the suggestion that Beatrice and Eugenie may be suitable substitutes.

The King, 75, made a brief and “gentle” return to public engagements on Sunday for the royals’ annual Easter church service but its not yet been made clear what this means in terms of future events.

Another insider claimed to the Daily Beast that while Charles is “very fond” of his nieces, he is following the example set by his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth, amid the debate over Harry and Meghan’s proposal to leave the UK but maintain some official roles.

“Everyone, including [Beatrice and Eugenie], accepts there is no place for them to be full-time working royals. And as the late Queen Elizabeth made clear, being a part-time working royal isn’t an option.”

An anonymous former courtier also pointed out that the decision to have the sisters as working royals is something that can’t be made this far down the line.

“With hindsight you can make the argument that they should have been kept on, but a dramatic change of course now would not be helpful for anyone,” the former palace aide said.

“The York girls have built successful lives as private individuals.”

Beatrice and Eugenie have maintained generally favourable public standing throughout their adult lives, and are both married with children.

Kate Middleton’s Uncle Shares Update After Princess of Wales’ Cancer Diagnosis Reveal

K ate Middleton’s maternal uncle, Gary Goldsmith, said the Princess of Wales handled the explanation of her cancer diagnosis “incredibly well” in an exclusive interview with Spanish show ¡De Viernes! released on March 29.

“I have been in touch with my sister Carole [Middleton] to make sure my niece is okay. I thought Kate handled it incredibly well, especially in such a difficult and tricky situation,” said Goldsmith, who spoke to reporters in English , but had his answers translated to Spanish for viewers. “I don’t know anybody else who’s had to deal with something like that, deal with their children and then have to offer explanations to the national and international media in such a public scenario.”

Speculation about Kate’s whereabouts created a media and online frenzy after an image posted on the Prince and Princess of Wales’ social media accounts of Kate and her three children was pulled by major photo agencies because it appeared to be digitally manipulated. In a statement shared via social media, Kate accepted responsibility for editing the photo , saying: “Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused.”

Rumors were put to rest on March 22, after Kate announced in a video message that she had been diagnosed with cancer after she underwent a planned abdominal surgery in January. The Princess of Wales is now undergoing “ preventative chemotherapy. ”

“It’s hard to imagine that they haven’t been affected by so many comments and conspiracy theories,” said Goldsmith, talking about his niece and her family. “I have sent messages to Kate so she knows what I feel and the love I have for her.”

Goldsmith recently appeared on the U.K. reality TV show Celebrity Big Brother , where he was the first housemate to be evicted by a public vote on March 8.

King Charles stresses importance of friendship 'in a time of need' after Princess Kate cancer diagnosis

LONDON — King Charles III delivered an Easter message Thursday stressing the importance of friendship, “especially in a time of need” — his first public remarks since Kate, the Princess of Wales , revealed she had become the second senior royal to be diagnosed with cancer .

The pre-recorded audio message comes ahead of the king’s attend ance at a service on Easter Sunday , in what will be his most significant public appearance since his own cancer diagnosis in February.

Charles, 75, was heard at a traditional Maundy Thursday service at Worcester Cathedral, near Birmingham in the West Midlands, some 130 miles northwest of London.

He spoke of how Jesus set an “example of how we should serve and care for each other,” and how “we need and benefit greatly from those who extend the hand of friendship to us, especially in a time of need,” according to the Press Association, a British news agency that typically reports royal announcements.

Buckingham Palace confirmed Wednesday that the king will attend the Easter Mattins Service at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle — one of the most important spiritual events in the royal calendar.

The king did not address his daughter-in-law’s health directly or name her in his brief personal message on Thursday. But royal watchers may interpret his words in the context of the ongoing family health crisis.

He also delivered a Bible reading.

The king did not appear in person at Thursday’s event — instead Queen Camilla deputized for him. Charles has stepped back from public engagements on medical advice.

The king’s public relations team also released a new picture of the monarch sitting at a desk in Buckingham Palace’s 18th Century Room, apparently recording his address into a microphone.

Charles has spoken of how touched he is by the outpouring of messages and cards from well-wishers from across the United Kingdom and beyond as he undergoes treatment for cancer, the exact type and stage of which the palace has not disclosed.

The king released a statement after Kate revealed her diagnosis last Friday, saying that he had become closer to his daughter-in-law through their shared hospital stays.

The king was “so proud of Catherine for her courage in speaking as she did,” the statement said.

The Royal Maundy service is part of the king’s role as the head of the Anglican Church. The monarch hands out specially made coins in white and red purses to 75 men and 75 women to reward them for good deeds such as charity work, a reference to the king’s age. Camilla performed that role on Thursday.

The event symbolizes the Last Supper, when Jesus washed the feet of disciples the day before Good Friday. The custom dates back to 600 A.D. and the coins have been in use since 1662, when Charles II distributed Maundy money.

Charles attended last year’s service at York Minster, following a tradition set by Queen Elizabeth II to hold it in different places across the U.K., not just in London.

The king continues to work behind the scenes while receiving treatment for cancer. On Tuesday, he met community and faith leaders from the Windsor Leadership charity at Buckingham Palace, and he continues to hold a weekly audience with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, albeit on at least one occasion by phone .
