NOTE TO U.S. CUSTOMS & BORDER PROTECTION

Due to the international and fluid nature of the yachting business and the fact there is no global central industry listing service to which all charter yachts subscribe it is impossible to ascertain a truly up-to-date view of the market. We are a news and information service and not always informed when yachts leave the charter market, or when they are recently sold and renamed it is not clear if they are still for charter. Whilst we use our best endeavors to maintain accurate information, the existence of a listing on this website should in no way supersede official documentation supplied by representatives of a yacht.

Description

Akin to a narrow, tall building, the ship's construction is layered floor-by-floor from the drive cone and reactor "upwards" to the flight deck and sensor relays. The ship features a storage and engineering deck, machine shop, galley and crew cabins, medical bay, storage deck, crew airlock, command deck and flight deck. Under thrust, g -forces then provide a "downwards" pull amenable to human orientation, simulating gravity.

The Rocinante 's normal crew complement was well over a dozen navy personnel and officers, and on many missions the ship would also carry at least six marines. As a Corvette -class frigate, the ship was capable of housing thirty Martian officers and crew during its operation with the MCRN. [2]

Rocinante possesses numerous advanced Martian weapons systems and materiel, including:

RocinanteWeaponsDisplay

Display of the Rocinante 's armament.

  • 6✕ Nariman Dynamics 40mm Point Defense Cannons
  • 2✕ Torpedo launchers, each with a 10-torpedo capacity

In its service as an independent contract warship, Rocinante was later outfitted with a light keel-mounted railgun, capable of firing 1-kilogram UNN-issue tungsten rounds at approximate 9,980 meters/second. [3]

In addition to the ship's weapon systems, it carries four (visible on ship's console S6 Ep1) reconnaissance drones , of which three respectively named "Peart", "Lee", and "Lifeson". [4]

Standard crewmembers

  • Captain James "Jim" Holden (Seasons 1-6)
  • Executive Officer and Chief Engineer Naomi Nagata (Seasons 1-6)
  • Pilot Alex Kamal (Seasons 1-5) (deceased)
  • Mechanic Amos Burton (Seasons 1-6)
  • Assistant Mechanic Clarissa Mao (Season 6)
  • Gunner and Pilot Bobbie Draper (Season 6)

Temporary crewmembers

  • Star Helix Security Detective Josephus Miller - Temporary during both the Assault on Thoth Station and the Eros Incident .
  • MMC Marine Roberta "Bobbie" Draper - Temporary during Io Campaign, and later after the Slow Zone Incident , before eventually becoming part of the main crew during the Free Navy Conflict .
  • Botanist Praxideke "Prax" Meng - Temporary crew member until his daughter's rescue.
  • UN Undersecretary Chrisjen Avasarala - Temporary during the Io Campaign .
  • Pastor Anna Volovodov - Temporary during the Ring Space Incident .
  • Espionage agent Kenzo Gabriel - Temporary during the Eros Incident.
  • Reporter Monica Stuart - Temporary during the Ring Space Incident.
  • Tycho Station Chief of Operations Carlos De Baca - Temporary as a pilot during the early phase of the Free Navy Conflict.

The Rocinante has possessed three various liveries between its service with the MCRN as the Tachi and its time as an independent warship, as displayed below:

Originally commissioned as the MCRN Tachi , the Corvette was one of Donnager's original assigned escorts when the McCabe and Valenza were replaced with 4 of the new Morrigan -class to improve the battleship's area of control. By the time the Donnager picked up the Canterbury survivors, the Tachi was the only escort docked in the Battleship 's hangar bay.

Once the Donnager was boarded in a CQB scenario, Captain Yao ordered Lt. Lopez and some MCR Marines to escort Holden and the other survivors to the Tachi , hoping they would escape and testify that the Martians had nothing to do with the Canterbury 's destruction. The bay, however, was swarming with enemy boarders. Amos Burton and Lopez were wounded and the Marines were killed, but Alex Kamal , previously an MCRN pilot, took control of the gunship. Using her PDCs , the Tachi blasted her way out of the hangar and made a getaway at full burn before the Donnager was scuttled.

Back to the Butcher

Once away, the Canterbury survivors received a message from the OPA (Outer Planets Alliance) spokesperson Fred Johnson offering a safe harbor, something that would be hard to find elsewhere as anyone flying a stolen Martian warship would be highly suspect. He also instructed them on how to change the Tachi's transponder codes to avoid long-range detection. Alex enthusiastically suggested naming their new ship "Flamin' Alamo" or "Screamin' Firehawk" to which Holden refused, suggesting the name "Rocinante" instead. Amos agreed, saying a woman named "Rocinante", a Spanish "workhorse", had once been good to him. It is later revealed Holden thought indeed of the horse of Don Quixote. With its new name, the Rocinante headed for Tycho Station .

Rock Bottom

Upon arrival, a brief hostility ensued as it turned out that Johnson planned to commandeer Rocinante for a mission, as he wanted a capable warship in case whatever happened to the Scopuli happened again, but Holden convinced him to hire them to undertake it. Johnson then had the ship disguised as a gas hauler to help them avoid detection and gave the Rocinante's crew their mission; to find Lionel Polanski , one of Fred's operatives from the Scopuli .

Not long after getting underway, the Rocinante is spotted by the MCRN Yangste , which then dispatches the Ambedkar , a Morrigan-class patrol destroyer to intercept. Despite Alex's best efforts, the Martians still attempted to board, which would have meant grave consequences once they recognized the stolen warship. Fortunately, Kenzo Gabriel (who had just been caught sending out a rogue signal) informed the Roci's crew that, being a Martian gunship, there would be secret codewords for when they were working in covert ops and needed to be left alone, which Alex confirmed as he recalled an incident he witnessed while serving in the Martian Navy, which involved an unidentifed ship. Having managed to locate and communicate the codewords to the Ambedkar in time, the MCRN ship was satisfied and promtly left the Rocinante alone.

Arriving at a lone asteroid, the Rocinante encountered a seemingly inactive stealth ship, found to be the Anubis and the Cant's killer, bound for Eros from Phoebe but never arrived. Docking with an umbilical, Holden, Naomi , Amos, Kenzo, and one of the Roci's drones searched the ship and discovered the Protomolecule at work throughout the ship. Finding that Lionel had escaped in a shuttle docked in the Anubis , Holden ordered Alex to destroy the Anubis with a torpedo , which Alex did gladly as the Rocinante now made its way to Eros.

Leviathan Wakes

The Rocinante escapes from Eros but loses its gas hauler disguise to detach itself from the claws holding it in place.

Doors & Corners

In the Assault on Thoth Station , the Rocinante was released from the OPA Guy Molinari to act as broken off cargo so it could float to the station. As it neared, the station's defending Stealth ship launched missiles at the Guy Molinari but the Rocinante intercepted them and then the two ships engaged in Point Defense Cannon (PDC) fire as they neared each other. The Roci then quickly hugged the habitat ring of the station as protection from the Stealth ship. Eventually, the Roci moved over the habitat ring to attack and destroy both the Stealth ship and an anti-asteroid canon that had destroyed one of the breaching pods .

When Eros moves on its own, the Rocinante chased after it and eventually is used to target lock the asteroid for UN missiles to destroy it. The Roci is then forced to consistently increase its speed to match Eros, endangering the crew in the process. Eventually, Joe Miller convinces the crew to slow down and stop its pursuit of the asteroid.

Caliban's War

During the UN-MCR War , the Rocinante goes after the Hybrid to destroy it but Holden gives up to go protect the Weeping Somnambulist from being blown up over Ganymede and escorts it to safety. The crew then discovered that the Hybrid had gotten onto the ship's cargo section. Holden and Amos try to remove it from the ship but Holden is trapped by a cargo container. The crew eventually manages to get the Hybrid out of the ship and Alex kills it by burning it with the Roci's drive plume.

Fight or Flight

Following the attack by the hybrid, Holden, Alex and Amos are outside the ship burning off traces of the protomolecule from the hull. Naomi tells him that the reactor shielding is intact and nothing critical was damaged. Prax is working on the cargo bay shield. After Holden learns that Earth and Mars are at war, Holden wipes the name Rocinante , as well as the lady, off the hull. Naomi asks Prax for a new name for the ship's transponder, renaming the ship Pinus Contorta , the name of a tree species.

When the crew of the Roci receives a distress signal from the Razorback which has Deputy undersecretary Chrisjen Avasarala who and Martian Marine Bobbie Draper who are being chased to be assassinated by a UNN Leonidas -class battleship . The Rocinante reaches them in time to destroy the Battleship 's missiles with its PDC's which blinds the battleship. The Roci uses this to move directly past the battleship and fire two missiles into its engines sheering two of them clean off and disabling the UNN ship. The Rocinante then docks to the Razorback to help its crew.

Mars sues Rocicorp in both Martian and Earth courts to get the Rocinante back from the Roci Crew. To pay their legal fees, the crew agree to take a film documentary crew to the Sol Ring .

It Reaches Out

Once the Seung Un is blown up, a false broadcast pins this attack on James Holden. The Rocinante is unable to respond to the false information with it being compromised from software installed by the cameraman Cohen , which disabled the ship's communication system. Fearing no way out, Holden tries to contact Proto-Miller , who informs him of how to enter the Ring safely. Then the Behemoth fires upon the Roci , but it goes to the ring and does a flip and burn at full speed. Fortunately, the ship and crew survive when entering into the Ring Space , becoming the first to do so.

Intransigence

With the Rocinante making it through the Ring , it escapes the OPA missile but both are captured and slowed by the Ring Station but are pulled to the center of the Slow Zone.

Abaddon's Gate

The Rocinante is freed from the Ring Space's speed limit thanks to Holden's plan to shut down every ship to make them not a threat to the Ring station. Once everyone is back onboard, the Rocinante weds back to the Sol system .

Eighteen months after the Ring Space incident , the Roci has gotten a new black and red paint job for its outer hull. The lawsuit from Mars has since been dropped thanks to Chrisjen Avasarala's help. Before the crew is sent on a mission to Ilus , the Roci goes to Luna to undergo modifications, installing landing legs and a railgun to the ship's bow. Upon arriving to the orbit of the planet, the Roci successfully lands on the surface of Ilus.

As Naomi and Lucia Mazur try to get inside the Rocinante , Murty ambushes them and pins them with gunfire to stop them from reaching the ship. Holden however reaches them in time and uses the Roci's PDCs to get them aboard the ship. Once secured, Naomi, Alex, and Lucia launch from the surface of Ilus to get Lucia away from Murty.

After all fusion reactors stop working over Ilus, the Rocinante has to save the Barbapiccola from entering the planet's atmosphere. To do so, the crew comes up with the idea of attaching both ships with a tether, and to use the Roci's thrusters to keep the Barb in orbit. When executing their plan, the Edward Israel launches its explosives-rigged shuttle at the Roci but Alex manages to destroy it. However, the resulting debris from the destruction damages the Roci and Alex is forced to use the ship's railgun's recoil as a makeshift thruster to keep the Barbapicolla in orbit. They are then saved when Holden shuts down all protomolecule on the planet, allowing every ship's Fusion drive to work again.

Cibola Burn

Alex Kamal reactivates the Rocinante's fusion reactor and targets locks the Edward Israel to keep it from escaping. When Alex is contacted by Holden, the Roci lands where Holden is and picks up the crew and Murtry, who is in custody, to head back to the Sol system.

Following the Rocinante's return to the Sol system , it arrived at Tycho Station where it docks to go through major repairs for some time. Chief Engineer Sakai tells Naomi that the ship has major stress fractures and metal fatigue all over the ship following the use of the Roci's railgun to stay in orbit around Ilus.

Down and Out

Naomi, while captive aboard the Pella , discovers that the Rocinante's reactor has been rigged to explode and is able to distract Cyn in order to use his hand terminal to warn Holden just in the nick of time. With the sabotage foiled, Holden, Bull , Monica Steward, and Leveau leave Tycho station to pursue the Zmeya to recover the protomolecule sample.

When the Zmeya – running engine-less to avoid detection – discovers that it's being shadowed by the Rocinante , it turns to full burn to escape, triggering a pursuit. As the Roci draws closer to the Free Navy ship, the Zmeya launches a barrage of missiles in a helical pattern at the Roci . The Roci is able to destroy a couple of missiles with its own torpedoes and then has to perform a rolling maneuver to take out the remaining missiles with its PDCs . With all the missiles destroyed, Holden activates the Roci's railgun and disables the Zmeya's drives , but as the Roci prepares to board the Free Navy ship, the Zmeya self-destructs.

Nemesis Games

While trying to rescue Naomi, who is trapped inside the Chetzemoka , the Rocinante is confronted by five Free Navy ships. Holden orders to engage the ships to give the Razorback time to save Naomi. Before combat is initiated, Captain Camina Drummer leads a mutiny aboard the Tynan , fires a missile which disables the Dewalt 's engines and orders Mowteng to stand down (both ships belonging to her own faction). After this Drummer fires a barrage of missiles at the Koto which are promptly intercepted by the latter's PDCs, however the distracted Koto then is disabled by the Rocinante's railgun. Next, while the Serrio Mal is distracted by the Dewalt's missiles, the Roci destroys the Serrio Mal with six railgun rounds, detonating the ship's reactor. The remaining ships then surrender and the Roci goes to rendezvous with the Razorback to pick up Naomi. The Rocinante then goes to Luna with the surviving crew to meet up with Avasarala and to pickup Amos and Clarissa Mao .

" Strange Dogs "

Six months later, the Rocinante has joined in the fight against Free Navy . While in a recon mission near an asteroid in the Belt, the Roci is ambushed by a Free Navy fighter skiff. They engage it in a short battle, with Holden in the pilot's seat, and he narrowly manage to destroy the skiff before it escapes. The Roci crew then launch a drone to explore the asteroid and discover an Epstein drive strapped to the rock. When Holden goes to investigate it, Naomi then takes over piloting of the Roci for the first time ever since Alex's death. After Holden disables the drive and boards the Roci , Naomi informs the crew of her discovery of where the signals to launch the drive came from a ship called the Azure Dragon . The asteroid is then blown up while the Rocinante burns away.

Tachi docked in the Donnager

  • The ship's name is a reference to Don Quixote's [5] horse. "Rocín" [6] being Spanish for "work horse" or "pack horse", and "ante" meaning "before" or "previously". Thus, "Rocinante" translates roughly to "previously a work horse". [7]
  • Alternative source for the name comes from the song Cygnus X-1 Book 1 The Voyage by the band Rush on their 1977 release, A Farewell to Kings. "On my ship, the 'Rocinante', Wheeling through the galaxies, Headed for the heart of Cygnus, Headlong into mystery."
  • "Tachi" is a Japanese word and may have the following meaning in a military context: (1) Tachi (太刀) being type of sword predating the Katana. A " tachi " is slender, narrow and light. (2) Tachi (立ち) literally "to rise", "rising up to face battle". In the TV show the crews uniforms show a Chinese "motto" or alternative name for the ships. For the Tachi, it is 首次作战 - "first (time) into battle". The Chinese motto aligns best with meaning (2).
  • The three recon drones carried on the ship, "Peart", "Lee", and "Lifeson", are named with the surnames of the Canadian band Rush . [8]

ROCINANTE Yacht – Remarkable $100M Superyacht

ROCINANTE yacht, formerly known as TV and Madsummer, is an exquisite mega yacht that is renowned for its outstanding style and sheer size.

Originally built by the Lurssen shipyard back in 2008, she can accommodate 12 guests across nine cabins.

The new superyacht comes with a sophisticated edge stemming from a distinguished, contemporary exterior and the large size of the vessel.

She is the 39th largest yacht built by Lürssen and ranks at number 179 on the world’s list of the biggest yachts.

Among her other achievements, she was included in the 2010 edition of the popular book The Superyachts.

Her popularity that year may have stemmed from her entry into the 2009 World Superyacht Awards. She was named a finalist for the Best 1,300GT to 2,999GT Motor Yacht (about 60m – 84m).

ROCINANTE yacht interior

The interior design was designed by Alberto Pinto, a design firm that encompasses more than a style and his passion for creating rooms that are both opulent and delightful in their design and construction.

The spacious guest suites reflect the yacht’s clean, fresh, and ambient style. In order to enhance the ambiance, each guest room has its unique style.

Each furnishing and decorative feature has been carefully selected to create a truly luxurious yet functional space for guests to enjoy while onboard.

The luxuriously appointed interior of the ROCINANTE yacht, the seagoing mega-yacht built in collaboration between a luxury Italian fashion house and Italian yacht designer Espen Oeino , reveals a spacious layout that is arranged on two decks.

The top deck houses a forward stateroom with a large jetted tub and a double shower. She also contains the main saloon, which boasts an elegant marble fireplace and is furnished with leather seating areas and sofas surrounding a coffee table by Foscarini Casa .

ROCINANTE was also the name of another renowned mode of travel, Don Quixote’s steed. The superyacht maintains a brave, arrogant, and somewhat insane demeanor regardless of who controls her at the moment.

"People who charter a yacht tend to want as many experiences as they can in a short space of time. It’s essentially a vacation in compressed format, so the yacht needs to collaborate with you in that. You need lots of different places to eat on board, so every day offers something different. The yacht also needs to make getting ashore easy, for meals on the beach and excursions, so it feels like you never do the same thing twice." - Espen Øino

A Closer Look at the $268 Million Superyacht Rocinante (Formerly "TV")

Rocinante

Lurssen , the internationally acclaimed superyacht builder, created a five-deck yacht named TV in 2008, and she's still a classic beauty in the yachting world today. To understand the sleek, aerodynamic beauty that is the TV, you have to take a look at this extraordinary company. After all, most luxury builders aren't invested in their commitment to sustainable business practices. Lurssen is truly an industry leader in more ways than one.

Lurssen History

"My firm shall be known as a leader in both quality and performance." Founded by Friedrich Lürssen in 1875, Lurssen Yachts has a simple mission to create a quality product. The building traditions have been handed down through the generations to help preserve and uplift the business. In fact, all the shareholders are Lurssen family members. They hold the company closely so that there are no outside risks, takeovers, or conflicts of interest. This tactic helps them stay on track to make some of the best ships and yachts in the world. So far, it has allowed them to build over 13,000 boats and ships, many of which are in service for decades. Esteemed among the world yacht makers for their investments in state of the art technology, they also hold the current record for most top 20 mega yachts. Lurssen built eleven of the twenty largest yachts in the last twenty years, and they're not stopping anytime soon. To that end, they offer lifetime support for all their vessels.

The yacht formerly known as "TV," has worn other titles over the years. She changes her name as often as she gets new owners, so like a sleek Hollywood starlet using a stage name, you may know her in another guise. Before she was called TV, she was known as the Madsummer. We can only imagine that she lived up to the name admirably. While she surely enjoyed her time as the Madsummer and the TV, this sip's current owner calls her bay a different name. She sails as the Rocinante now. The change is a recent one. The TV went up for sale in 2017, just a couple of years after her 2015 overhaul. She was sold by Robert Shepherd at Edmiston & Company and renamed. The name is a very apropos reimagining of her original guise. For those who don't know, Rocinante was the name given to another famous transport, namely Don Quixote's horse. Brave, brazen, and a little bit mad seems to be a persona the ship keeps regardless of who owns her at the time.

Achievements

Among her many achievements, the TV was featured in the prestigious 2010 edition of The Superyachts book. Her fame that year may be due to the fact that she entered in the 2009 World Superyacht Awards. She competed for Best Displacement Motor Yacht of 1,300GT to 2,999GT (approximately 60m – 84m). More importantly, she was a finalist. Her designer Espen Oeino is known for his incredible work in the ocean-faring world and beyond. With over sixty yachts to his name, the TV is a member of an incredibly prestigious family. You can see the resemblance in the lines around their decks.

Many Amenities

The Rocinante has more features than she's had names and owners. If you begin at the top, her owners' suite has panoramic windows with 360 views of the ocean. Additionally, the massive luxury abode is equipped with a private deck which overlooks several of her other decks. Lower decks have a plethora of pleasing amenities. She can handle twelve or more guests in ten luxurious bedrooms and houses a crew of over thirty. Like other top-tier luxury mega yachts, that's two or more staff per visitor. The private rooms naturally all come equipped with televisions, and there's ship-wide Wifi as well. We can't imagine why you'd want to stay in, but if you did, it would be as luxuriant as sitting out on the deck as she cruises along at twelve knots.

On deck, she has a hot tub for relaxing and unwinding any tense muscles, and two small pools for swimming in fresh water if you prefer. Our favorite feature is the outstanding barbecue arrangement and outdoor dining area. Speaking of the deck, she's covered in gorgeous glowing teak everywhere you look. With plenty of places to relax and catch some sun, plus a padded bed/couch area the size of a room to lounge in on one deck, you'll almost have to get a tan just by visiting.

You can wander downstairs and, with the owner's permission, of course, take out one of the jetskis. The back deck allows ample opportunity for those who wish to scuba or swim in the open ocean. It's not hard to imagine curious dolphins swimming right up to say hello as you take in the view near the water line.

Comfortable Cruising at its Finest

Indoors you'll find cozy niches and large lounges, dining amenities for a family or a whole party. The creme, gold, and teak color scheme is carried throughout the entire ship, and soft lines bring a sense of calm and relaxation of their own. If that's not enough to put you at your ease, try the small spa for a massage, or hit the shipboard gym to burn off some nervous energy in style. Also for the owner and guests comfort the TV aka Rocinante comes equipped with an ultra-modern stabilization system which reduces roll motion. The stability means less chance of motion sickness or sea sickness for those aboard. When it comes to deluxe features, having all the benefits of a yacht without the downside is about as good as it gets.

Final Thoughts

We're not n the market for a superyacht (yet), but if we were, Lurssen would be the first to hear about it. Beautiful yachts like the TV are only part of their appeal. Any business that works so hard to do right and use ethically sourced materials to help promote sustainable and responsible resource use is worthy of a second look. They've certainly shot to the top of our list. When you're ready to purchase your next superyacht, we hope you'll look at this forward-thinking company too, but for now, we'll lay on the beach and daydream about adding the TV to our private collection.

Yächtley Crëw will bring 'yacht rock' to Providence, with a Warwick native on board

If songs like “I'd Really Love to See You Tonight” and “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” make you think of kicking back on a boat and cruising in the summertime, you’re not alone.

YouTube coined the genre “yacht rock” to describe the soft rock sound of the 1970s and '80s, and Warwick native Tom Gardner, guitarist with the band Yächtley Crëw , invites you to get on board with the vibes when their “Full Steam Ahead” tour stops at the Providence Performing Arts Center on Saturday, July 27.

“It’s like a feeling that reminds you of your childhood or first love. It’s nostalgia,” says Gardner, who goes by the stage name Tommy Buoy. “It’s actually a jazz-rock fusion that’s pretty hard to play. We had to step up our game to learn these songs, many of which were originally performed by high-quality studio musicians.”

After years performing solo and in bands across the region – maybe you’ve heard his song “Summertime in Rhode Island” with the rock/reggae band Someday Providence – Gardner moved to Los Angeles in 2010. He connected with six other musicians to form Yächtley Crëw, which performed for the first time in January 2017, and he says “it’s been kind of a rocket ride since then.”

Clad in nautical attire for shows, the band has performed with artists like Elliot Lurie, lead singer of the band Looking Glass, whose song “Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl)” is one of the covers Yächtley Crëw regularly includes in set lists. After signing with Jimmy Buffett’s Mailboat Records label, they also had a six-month residency in Las Vegas.

Born in 1983, Gardner, a Pilgrim High School and University of Rhode Island graduate, says he was drawn to the mellow sound of yacht rock even before it was so named. Songs like Steely Dan’s “Reeling in the Years,” “Don’t Bring Me Down” by ELO and “Rich Girl” by Hall & Oates are buoyant, he says.

As for the definition of yacht rock, he says that’s highly debated in the industry but generally revolves around big vocals and harmonies.

“We let the fans tell us what they want to hear,” Gardner says. “Some songs end up borderline yacht rock, but if the fans love it, we’ll play it. We also bring our own style. We’re faithful to the originals, but we are high-energy with choreography, banter and lights. We’re here to entertain!”

Yächtley Crëw performed several years ago at The Strand in Providence, but the group has multiple venues in the area on this year’s tour, including three in Massachusetts: Indian Ranch in Webster , South Shore Music Circus in Cohasset, and the Cape Cod Melody tent in Hyannis.

“The whole sailing vibe fits in with New England,” Gardner says, adding that he loves returning to his home state. “I’m always going to be proud of Rhode Island. It’s special when we see someone from here – it’s like one big town.”

A crew member falls off a yacht and dies during a race on the Aegean Sea

  • Copy Link copied

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A French crew member on a boat participating in a yacht race on the Aegean Sea has died after falling overboard in strong winds, Greek officials said Tuesday.

A coast guard statement said the accident occurred late Monday off the eastern island of Kassos. It identified the crew member as a 40-year-old woman. It said a second crew member who went overboard was rescued.

Race organizers said the dead crew member had a severe head injury and efforts to revive her were unsuccessful. The yacht was taking part in the international Aegean 600 that started Sunday.

Organizers said Monday’s severe weather forced 14 of the 69 yachts participating to drop out.

Review: Stefani, Morissette spark a 'Hella Good' start to Minnesota Yacht Club festival

Experience matters. Even in rock 'n' roll — and especially at rock 'n' roll festivals.

After eight months of cutesy marketing and ample media coverage, St. Paul's Minnesota Yacht Club festival finally set sail Friday on Harriet Island Regional Park and got off to a remarkably swift and smooth start for an inaugural music fest. Credit for its success should largely go to its seasoned crew.

The music lineup in the fest is heavily loaded with old pros, and that proved not to be a bad thing Friday. Opening day's feminist rock trifecta of Alanis Morissette, Gwen Stefani and Joan Jett & the Blackhearts all skillfully strutted their stuff and showed the kids how to get it done. Never mind that there were very few kids among the crowd of 34,000 fans.

As much as those venerable performers deserve props, though, so do the operators of Minnesota's first new major music fest in more than a decade.

The event was launched by C3 Presents, the Texas-founded company behind Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits and a couple dozen more festivals. These folks truly know the music fest business. About time Twin Cities fans benefitted from it.

Yacht Club's electronic wristbands and well-trained security staff made for smooth entrances. The stage production and sound were primo. The layout and flow between the two stages was well-organized. The music ran nearly nonstop and on time. And all the assorted VIP and "platinum" areas offered added comfort for those willing to pay at least a few hundred bucks more more than the relatively good-value $215-$255 general-admission two-day passes.

One noticeable snag: Food and drink lines got long as the crowd swelled in the late afternoon. Good thing many Minnesotans are too cheap to down $15 beers, or things could've been worse.

Seriously, though, the crowd on opening day was discernibly devoid of youth and almost exclusively middle-aged. MYC's lack of musical and generational diversity could be considered a shortcoming for what was billed as a hip, modern festival.

All those teens and college kids buying up throwback Chili Peppers and No Doubt T-shirts at Urban Outfitters and Kohl's are apparently more into cheap fashion ware than they are those bands' music, because none of them showed up to Yacht Club on opening day. If they had to move the festival to September for any reason, falling on a school day probably wouldn't hurt attendance much.

There's plenty to learn and apply to future years. In the meantime, here are some general takeaways from Friday's festival:

Women obviously ruled the day. It was a nostalgic lineup, sure, but this one trait about Friday's lineup could be seen as a hip, modern element. Aside from specifically targeted events like Lilith Fair, you never would have seen a festival with that many female singers atop the poster card in the 1990s, when Morissette and Stefani's old band No Doubt were in their heyday; certainly not in the '80s, when Jett dominated.

Losing the Black Crowes on the lineup due to illness was a real disappointment, but that just emphasized the women headliners all the more. What's more, the day also saw electrifying sets by a couple other women-led acts, too: Country rocker Morgan Wade and the punky hometown band who kicked off the day in hard-throttling style, Gully Boys.

Stefani seemed to be having the most fun. Her husband, Blake Shelton, may have wisely picked up on the strong feminine vibe when he showed up to sing one song with her — and only one! — their new single "Purple Irises," compared with the three she sang with him in town at his TC Summer Jam gig in 2022 . That bit seemed to delight her a lot, but so did the crowd's excited reaction throughout her 60-minute performance, from "Sunday Morning" at the start to the mid-set groover "Hella Good" to her firebrand closer, "Just a Girl."

"Think about how many years I've been loving you guys!" she cheered before the finale, adding, "This song means even more nowadays." Especially on this day.

The elder stateswoman rocked the hardest. This was the best and most bombastic of Jett's many gigs here in recent years. Of course, the 65-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's main hits went over in a big way at a big, summery music fest, including "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," "Bad Reputation" and the Runaways' "Cherry Bomb." She also dropped in a cool batch of edgier, deeper cuts with inclusive messaging, including "Different" and a cover of the Minnesota classic "Androgynous," which she introduced by saying, "I'm a big fan of this band and its songwriter, Paul Westerberg and the Replacements."

Morissette hasn't changed much (and that's a good thing). With an orange-ish moon adding dramatic ambience overhead, the Canadian record-maker/breaker put on a rather gutsy, in-your-face, 90-minute performance predictably filled with her big hits, including "One Hand in My Pocket" as the opener and "You Oughta Know" near the end. But she made the set way better than just a nostalgic singalong by delivering some similarly emphatic-sounding, inner-tumultuous newer songs, including the epic piano ballad "Rest" and the rockier "Smiling," the latter written for her hit Broadway musical, "Jagged Little Pill." Her voice was as strong as ever, her band was versatile, and she clearly deserved being the headliner.

There was one new element to the show we didn't see in the '90s, though: Morissette brought out her daughter Onyx, age 8, and another young friend to sing "Ironic." How ironic to hear it sung with such sweetness.

Even the younger acts sang the Gen-X hits. Wade earned loud cheers for her semi-ironic cover of Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl." Nerdy but impactful Kalamazoo indie-rocker Michigander sang part of "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." The U2 song fit his own lost-wanderer, soul-searching vibe, evidenced by his unreleased tune that followed, "Giving Up." And after their own hit "Who's Laughing Now," local rockers Durry ended their set with a rousing take on Jimmyeatworld's "The Middle" (technically a millennials hit, but close enough).

The day's breakout performer was… . Sporting a Jett T-shirt and playing under a blazing midafternoon sun — things would soon cool down nicely with cloud cover — Wade coolly delivered an ultra-impressive set of musically refined, ruggedly poetic twang-rock that greatly contrasted her choice of covers. The Virginia singer came off like a tattooed Stevie Nicks in down-and-out rockers like "The Night" and "2 AM in London," each fueled by her smoky but sweet voice. A genuine wow.

What about Day Two? The bro factor should be much higher on Saturday, with the Red Hot Chili Peppers headlining, preceded by the Offspring, Gary Clark Jr., the Hold Steady, Soul Asylum and Hippo Campus. Tickets are sold-out except for some higher-end platinum and VIP options.

Chicago to Mackinac sailing race record smashed by more than an hour

Maverick racing by the Mackinac Bridge

The Maverick broke a 22-year record in the 115th Chicago Yacht Club Race To Mackinac Presented By Wintrust. Chicago Yacht Club Race To Mackinac

MACKINAC ISLAND, MI - Before the first boats ever left Navy Pier this weekend, Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac organizers knew the weather forecast would make this 115th competition one of the faster courses in the race’s history - if the sailing crews could avoid the storms forecast to sweep across Lake Michigan.

And while the storms did send at least three damaged boats limping out of the race and caused a man overboard situation, southerly wind conditions were a boon to the frontrunners, creating a downwind drag race and leading to a record-breaking win that smashed the old Race to Mackinac record by more than an hour.

The Maverick’s crew beat Roy P. Disney’s 22-year-old record with a time of 22 hours, 24 minutes, 23 seconds. This bested the Disney heir’s record set in 2002 with Pyewacket by an hour, six minutes and 11 seconds.

The Maverick team was led by Sanford Burris and William and Ward Kinney. The boat also claimed the race’s Royono Trophy for the first racing monohull to finish the 115th edition.

“I will tell you from my perspective, I wish the record had lasted longer, but these things are inevitable,” said Disney, a well-known figure in the sailing world who is the grand-nephew of Walt Disney. “Given how long it took to break that record shows how difficult a course it is, and what a classic sailboat race it is! Many congratulations to the owner, the crew and the boat, Maverick.”

Nearly 250 boats joined the 333-mile race from Chicago’s Navy Pier to the finish line near Mackinac Island. Known as America’s Offshore Challenge, it’s the world’s longest annual freshwater sailing race. The race is divided into the Cruising Division, which left Chicago on Friday, and the sleeker Racing Division, which began racing on Saturday.

What was the secret to this weekend’s fast times?

“Most important is a southerly wind direction and strength, combined with advancements in boats and sails,” said Winn Soldani, chair for the 115th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust. “Plus you add in last night’s storms that brought increased breeze and it’s literally the perfect setup for a record-breaking year.”

Some of the boats are still finishing the course today. You can see them there on the race tracker.

Maverick’s Sanford Burris is from Kirtland, Ohio. “He sails with his sons and many longtime friends on the carbon fiber Andrews 80 they have spent the past three years upgrading. Joining the 20 crew onboard was Evolution Sails founder Rodney Keenan,” race staff said.

“The team celebrated briefly as the Maverick team crossed the Race to Mackinac finish line between Mackinac Island and the Round Island lighthouse … and then kept on sailing.”

The Maverick is one of a couple dozen sailboats competing in this year’s “Super Mac” race - which means it keeps going instead of stopping at Mackinac Island for the big afterparty. It races south down Lake Huron to reach Port Huron - a race of 495 nautical miles. The Bayview Mackinac Race - which is next week - starts near the Blue Water Bridge and competing sailboats will race north to Mackinac Island. Those boats running the “Super Mac” can also do the Bayview and it’s like running three races in a week’s span.

'Man, they came to party': Yachtley Crew sails back to Indian Ranch with more yacht rock

Portrait of Richard Duckett

When Yachtley Crew came to Indian Ranch by the shores of Indian Lake in Webster last summer, it was evidently a very popular voyage through the smooth waters of a yacht rock tribute show.

"We love Indian Ranch. Man, they came to party. They were amazing," recalled Phillip Daniel, also known as Yachtley Crew's Philly Ocean and lead vocalist, about how the the show went and the reaction of the audience.

Yachtley Crew will be setting sail again for an appearance at Indian Ranch on July 25. "If it's anything like last year, we're stoked," Daniel said.

'Sailing ... takes me away ....'

The seven-member band, which dresses in nautical suits with captain's hats and wears aviator sunglasses, is currently on its "Full Steam Ahead" nationwide tour, the biggest tour since it was founded in Los Angeles in 2017. Upcoming dates also include South Shore Music Circus in Cohasset on July 26, Providence Performing Arts Center in Providence on July 27, and the Cape Cod Melody Tent in Hyannis on July 28.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

The band is riding the yacht rock wave since a 2005 video series launched the term in 2005 in an affectionate send up of artists such as Christopher Cross and Hall and Oates. Cross, who was at Indian Ranch July 7 with Justin Hayward of Moody Blues fame, had a big hit in 1979 with the soft rock song " Sailing " which is about getting away from everything on a sail boat and so helped form the archetype of Yacht Rock.

Yachtley Crew also call themselves "The Titans of Soft Rock."

Asked for a definition of yacht rock, Daniel said "it's one of those elusive things ... I think the most easy way to define it is the iconic soft rock hits from the late 70s and early 80s music." Except that, instead of soft rock, "yacht rock just sounds kind of more fun."

Yachtley Crew's first recording release "Seas the Day" (2023) includes its renditions of songs that have become regarded as yacht rock classics such as Boz Scaggs’ “Lido Shuffle,” Ace’s “How Long,” Robbie Dupree’s “Steal Away,” the Bee Gees’ “How Deep Is Your Love” and Christopher Cross’ “Ride Like the Wind.” Other songs in the band’s set include Toto’s “Africa,” Looking Glass’ “Brandy” and Rupert Holmes’ “ Escape (The Piña Colada Song).”

Indeed, "The Piña Colada song, that is a great yacht rock core song, like 'Ride Like the Wind,'" Daniel said.

Audiences often dress up for the shows in yacht-themed attire and love to sing-along. Other yacht rock tribute and fun party bands include Yacht Rock Revue who will be performing at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield on Aug. 4.

'It has to be smooth'

Elsewhere, there has been some rather pedantic debate in some quarters about what makes true yacht rock, with terms appearing such as "nyacht" rock. An article in Mental Floss magazine helps keep things straightforward by saying " But above all else, the sound has to be  smooth . "

Daniel's vocals are certainly smooth, and the depth of sound that Yachtley Crew brings to its music is enhanced by having a sax player.

Daniel has memories of listening to the soft music of the late 70s/early 80s era while riding around with his father in a car and singing along to the radio. Later, he was in several original bands in Los Angeles. Besides Daniel (Philly Ocean) Yachtley Crew is made up of drummer Rob Jones (Sailor Hawkins), bassist Chaz Ruiz (Baba Buoy), guitarist Thomas Gardner Jr. (Tommy Buoy), backing vocalist Curt Clendenin (Stoney Shores), saxophone/flutist Paul Pate (Pauly Shores) and keyboardist Matt Grossman (Matthew McDonald).

"Each of us had careers with bands," Daniel said. The crew started to be assembled by Jones and Ruiz who are long-time friends and were listening to yacht rock music and felt they could do something with it. They put out a Craigslist ad and found guitarist Gardner. Daniel is friends with Gardner and also came aboard.

"Everything came together really organically," Daniel said.

'I think we have something here'

The idea of uniforms for the band came early. "Just the idea of yacht rock is such fun," Daniel said. But the group spent several months rehearsing to get the music down right. "We wanted to embody what people remember about these songs."

When the curtain was pulled on their first gigs Daniel recalls the shock on the faces of the audiences when they saw a band in nautical uniform. However, "They got it within two or three songs. They were screaming and dancing ... (I thought) Man, I think we have something here."

Yachtley Crew was soon selling out local venues and were noticed by the late legendary Jimmy Buffett who signed them to his own Mailboat Records label. The group have appeared on SiriusXM’s Yacht Rock Radio “Yacht Rock 311” show as the first ever Yacht Rock band to perform live at the station.

Just as the band was about to get ready for its first nationwide tour in 2020, the pandemic struck. "We had a ton of shows booked," Daniel said. Yachtley Crew made music videos, put on live-streamed concerts and played at some drive-in concerts that were organized in the Los Angeles area. "People seemed to really respond.'

As the lockdown eased, "I think there was so much pent up demand for live music it really helped us. We got all the gigs back and places we'd never played before were selling out," Daniel said.

'Something original'

The "Seas the Day" recording also has Yachtley Crew's first original song, "Sex on the Beach," ostensibly about the drink that bears the name.

"We wanted to put something original out there," Daniel said. The challenge for the band was to come up with a song that sounds like it could have been written in the late '70s/early '80s soft rock era. "We wanted to capture the same vibe," he said. The video for "Sex on the Beach" has a guest appearance by the Access Hollywood & iHeart host Mario Lopez.

The song and video includes a list of names of drinks, a couple falling in love, and "innuendo," Daniel said. All the members of Yachtley Crew contributed to the song. Once they had the concept, "we had the song written in 30 minutes. Everyone brings something unique to it." Fans have started requesting the song at shows.

Yachtley Crew has "two albums in the works" and two more original songs "in the mix." With that, "The core will always be the iconic songs," Daniel said.

The band has been venturing out across the seven seas with appearances abroad, including the United Kingdom.

"Total world domination," Daniel joked when asked about his ultimate goal for Yachtley Crew. Or at least, "To play for a stadium full of people," he said.

"We want to play the music for as many people as we can all over the world. When people come to our shows they're creating memories they will have for the rest of their lives. That's what it's about."
